New Beginnings, Continued Legacies
Dear Alumni and Friends, As the 2016-2017 school year has come to a close and we prepare for the year to come, we reflect on what a wonderful year it was and how excited we are for the new beginnings upon us. Here at Bishop Gorman we are very proud of our students and all their accomplishments including three State Championships (one of those teams being ranked in the top in the nation see page 4), over $27 million in college scholarship money for the Class of 2017 (page 6) and Golden Grads, celebrating their 50th Class Reunion (page 10). Looking ahead to the 2017-2018 school year, there are many exciting events that I would like to share with you as you read through the pages of this summer issue. We are so excited for the new beginnings to come and all that the next school year has to offer, especially welcoming our newest Gaels, the Class of 2021! Make sure that you save the date for all of the activities scheduled for this fall (page 11). Reach out to your class reps and get involved. The graduating Class of 2017 had 55 legacy families and we continue that tradition with 55 incoming freshmen in the Class of 2021 who are part of a legacy family as well. While the BGHS family is strong, we want to be stronger! There are so many ways to engage. You can join us at a theatre performance, come to a game, attend or volunteer at an event and/or make a gift. Please know that we appreciate your continued support of Bishop Gorman. You are what makes Bishop Gorman such a special place. Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you in the fall. Go Gaels!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Jon Von Tobel '79 and Dionne (Drabek) Von Tobel '86
Dionne (Drabek) '86 and Jon Von Tobel '79 may have graduated high school 7 years apart, but it was fate and a little “Bishop Gorman connection” that brought these two together later in life. Dionne and Jon wed in 1998 and the rest is history. Jon is currently the Vice President of IT at Station Casinos and the statement couldn’t be truer that behind every successful man, there stands a great woman. Dionne has devoted her life to her family and raising their children. The Bishop Gorman tradition has lived on with the Von Tobel children Nicole (Von Tobel) Theodore ’01, Jonathan ’09, Gretta ’17, Georgia ’19, and will continue with the couple’s youngest daughter, Gillian ’23. We are so lucky to call the Von Tobels, Gaels! Why was it so important to you to continue the legacy of sending your children to Bishop Gorman? As parents we strive to give our children love, faith, knowledge, and a sense of purpose. It is so important to find a school for our children that shares our morals and priorities. Bishop Gorman was that school for us and it is now that school for our children. Gorman’s never-ending commitment and success to family, faith, and learning is why there has been a Von Tobel at Bishop Gorman virtually every year since opening its doors in 1954. It is our hope that our family legacy will continue for many future generations to come.

Summer 2017
Does seeing your child as a Bishop Gorman student bring back fond memories for you? If so, what are some of those memories? Most of the memories from our childhood are somehow connected to Gorman. Going to a Gorman football game brings back memories of home games in the Silver Bowl and parties at Ryan Hall. Sending them off to dances makes us nostalgic for dances in the old gym, and how could you escape reminiscing on Parent Night when so many of the teachers we had are still there teaching our kids today. What did you learn and take away from being a Gael? To live our faith, to always strive for excellence, to give back to our community, and to never stop learning. What advice would you give to other families that are considering sending their children to Bishop Gorman? Bishop Gorman is not just a school, it is a community. Encourage your student to become involved in the many opportunities Bishop Gorman offers, whether in sports, academics, faith or any other extracurricular activities. If they do, Bishop Gorman will not only prepare them for college, it will also prepare them for life. Is there anything additional that you would like to share with us? The Bishop Gorman experience is so significant and so important to those of us who have lived it that it continues to guide and shape our lives many, many years after we have left the halls and classrooms behind. That shared experience is one of the things that brought the two of us together 19 years ago and it is still a part of what keeps us together today. It has influenced how we have raised our children and will do the same for them as they grow and go out into the world. The Gorman experience ties together those of us who have attended Bishop Gorman across miles and generations. The gift of a Bishop Gorman education is one of the greatest things a parent can give their child.
I can’t thank you enough for the contribution you have made to my education and making it possible for me to have a brighter future. -Jillian ’17

Passp rt 2017 Mexico! This year’s annual wine tasting event, Passport, took Bishop Gorman families, alumni & friends south of the border to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! The event was held at Crimson poolside on May 5th at the the Red Rock Casino Resort Spa, where guests enjoyed delicious drinks, tasty food, great entertainment and of course, some delicious wines! The indoor/outdoor venue was a great atmosphere for the evening’s beautiful weather! DJ Arty was our entertainment for the night thanks to Missy Cochran Entertainment and attendees sipped on all the best that Breakthru Beverage had to offer. Along with the wines, beers, margaritas and specialty cocktails, the Summer Fling Sangria and Watermelon Fresca, there was a wide variety of Mexican-inspired bites to enjoy! Over 60 auction items were bid on throughout the week and at the event with our “text-in” silent auction raising money for our Tuition Assistance Program.
