Celebrating our 59th Commencement Ceremony with the
Class of 2016
T
he Bishop Gorman High School community marked its 59th commencement ceremony and bid farewell to the 307 members of the Class of 2016 on Sunday, May 22, 2016, at The Orleans Arena. The graduates were joined in their procession by members of the Class of 1966, the school’s “Golden Graduates” celebrating their 50th high school reunion. Friends and family in attendance were addressed by Valedictorian Karli Berry and by commencement speaker and Bishop Gorman alum, Gabe Hunterton, CEO, iTEAM Network. Most Rev. Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas, offered the invocation and presented the diplomas to the graduates.
T
he commencement ceremony capped off two weeks of events in honor of the graduates which started on Friday, May 6, with the traditional Senior Barbeque. On Tuesday, May 17, Salutatorian, Maria Geraghty, addressed her peers at the Senior Academic Awards presentation. The Baccalaureate Mass was held at the Shrine of the Holy Redeemer on Thursday, May 19, 2016. This year’s graduating seniors have been accepted to colleges and universities all over the United States including: Columbia University, Cornell University, Creighton University, Georgetown University, Marquette University, University of Notre Dame, Pepperdine University, Purdue University, Stanford, University of California Berkeley, UNLV, UNR, and USC just to name a few. The Class of 2016 boasts three National Merit Scholarship Finalists, one National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, eight National Merit Scholarship Commended Students, seven Gold Key Award Winners, 27 Athletic Scholarships and was awarded over $17 million in scholarships. We congratulate our newest alums and wish them all the best as they continue their education in college.
4 State Titles for Bishop Gorman Sports
The spring sports season ended with the Bishop Gorman Women’s Lacrosse team winning their 4th straight Nevada State Title. Coach Tod Lower and his team capped off another big year with a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory over Desert Hills, UT. This brings the total to four state championships for the Bishop Gorman Athletic Department for the 2015-2016 school year. Coach Kenny Sanchez and the football team won the State title for the 7th year in a row and a National Championship for the 2nd straight year. The men’s tennis team, under Coach Craig Witcher, won their first State title since 1990. The men’s basketball team won their 5th consecutive Nevada State Title during the winter sports season.
