These two teachers were selected by their colleagues and students and each will receive a $10,000 award. Please join us in congratulating the 2016 Fr. Bedtime Books
Bishop Gorman seniors are busy in many important ways, and Amber is no exception. She an active member of NHS, a member of ASG and a tennis player. Bedtime Books is another expression of Amber’s commitment to serve her community in a way that demonstrates her compassion for children who are in need of comfort and encouragement.
Catchy phrase. What is it? What is so special about reading books at bedtime?
Bishop Gorman student Amber Del Rosario ’16 brings some joy into the lives of many bedridden children in Clark County hospitals. An illness and a hospital can be scary situations for anyone, but for children it can be even more devastating, particularly in the case of long term or very serious illness. The mission of the Bedtime Books program is to support children receiving intensive hospital treatment while promoting literacy.
The Bishop Gorman chapter of the National Honor Society collects children’s books – new or gently used – to help support Amber’s efforts. Anyone in the Gorman community can contribute by sending books to the school. A collection box is in Mr. Goertermiller’s room #309.
Several times each week, Amber visits these children in their hospital rooms, talks with them and reads stories to them individually; and she tells them that they are loved. When she departs, she leaves the book with the child as a gift and as a remembrance of the pleasant time she has spent with each child. She makes more than one hundred such visits each month. She says that her goal is to reach out to these children and let them know that there is hope.
Amber is a good example of Bishop Gorman students who invest part of their lives in service to others.
Marisa Becker ’16 was recently awarded the 2016 Silver Level Graduating Seniors Award. The Graduating Seniors Program recognizes those student-athletes who have worked hard to pursue figure skating while maintaining their academics. There are four categories of recognition based on competition and test achievements in all disciplines of figure skating. While figure skating is not a traditional school sport, it requires the same dedication, perseverance and time management as any varsity sport. U.S. Figure Skating is proud to recognize these student-athletes for their commitment and excellence.
Sabrina Schnur ’16, had the honor of having her poem “Ophelia’s Scent Obscured” published in the Spring 2016 edition of Creative Communications. This is an international anthology for high school age teens where only the top 45% are published.
Congratulations!
CSI Crime Scene Project: Who Killed Dean Anderson? Our beloved Dean Anderson was found “dead” on the morning of April 4, 2016. The “Breaking News” story was brought to the students via our own BGTV reporters. Mr. Cava’s Photography classes took crime scene photos, while Ms. DeJoria’s Honors Human Physiology classes processed evidence and investigated the crime.
Congratulations to Austin Dickieson ’17 on receiving a First Place award at the Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival Expo held on May 7 at Cashman Center. Austin’s project was titled “Science and Your Pet” and as part of his First Place win in the Natural Science category, he received a $1,000 award from Cox Cable plus another $1,000 each to his teacher and school! In addition, Emilie Hong ’17 was a finalist at the Expo and received $500 from Cox and $500 for her teacher and school. Congratulations!
This staged CSI Investigation was part of an annual three-week collaborative project where investigative teams processed blood, fibers, hair, fingerprints, and handwriting found at the scene of the crime to come up with the perpetrator. A crime directed toward one person ended the life of another. Who committed this horrible act? Our investigative teams found that it was none other than student Hannah Bock ’16.!Congratulations to all the students who participated in solving this case!

Counselor’s Corner ATTENTION JUNIORS: After attending the National Association of
College Admission Counselors Conference last fall, I became more convinced that an Application Camp would be beneficial to our rising seniors as they begin the college application process. This task is often the most stressful part of the senior year experience. My goal is for the Application Camp to help lower the stress of finding the right fit and meeting deadlines. By the end of our session, every senior who participates will have a complete Common Application (except for Essay), a complete academic and activities resume, a better understanding of the college essay, and a prioritized game plan for applying to college. I chose the dates based on the fact that the Common Application is not available until August 1st. There is NO cost for the camp. Will this camp be successful for our students? Competition for admissions and scholarships is fierce, and applications need to be impeccable. Essays need to show personality and stand-out in a stack of hundreds or even thousands. I feel this camp will be a step in the right direction to give our students that edge.
tudents in Mrs. Truitt’s Honors and Scholars Biology classes performed frog dissections to see for themselves exactly how frogs’ systems compare to human systems. The frog dissections were the culmination of a project in which nine groups in each class presented a human system and compared it to the frog’s system.
The creativity and variety of presentations was great to see. In their group presentation on the Digestive System, Marci Adolfo ’19, Katie Lee ’19, and Michael Spriggs ’19 drew the digestive tract on plastic aprons and gave them to the students to label the parts, making it a fun interactive presentation. Other projects were presented electronically by way of student-made videos or power point presentations.

his year’s annual wine tasting event, Passport, took Bishop Gorman families, alumni & friends to Italy. The event was held at the Red Rock Resort, where guests enjoyed delicious drinks, tasty food, great entertainment and, of course, some delicious wines! The indoor/outdoor venue was a great atmosphere for the evening! Our emcee, Bryan Chan, guided us through a night that began with a student fashion show modeling the latest fashions from STITCHED Lifestyle and Rent the Runway. The entertainment continued thanks to Missy Cochran Entertainment with DJ R.O.B. while attendees sipped on all the best that Breakthru Beverage had to offer. Along with the seventeen wines, two beers and two specialty cocktails, the Basil-ica and the San Giovanni, there was a wide variety of Italian-inspired bites to enjoy! Over 70 amazing auction items were bid on throughout the week and at the event with our “text-in” silent auction raising money for our Tuition Assistance Program. The night was a huge success and we could not have done it without our gracious performers, sponsors, volunteers and YOU! Special thanks to all of our auction donors, Red Rock Casino Resort Spa, Breakthru Beverage of Nevada, Missy Cochran Entertainment, STITCHED Lifestyle, Rent the Runway, Encore Productions, LifeTouch, and CREAM!
