On May 20, 2018, the Bishop Gorman High School community held its 61st commencement ceremony at the Thomas & Mack Center and bid farewell to the 348 members of the Class of 2018. The graduates were joined in their procession by the school’s “Golden Graduates” members of the Class of 1968, celebrating their 50th high school reunion. Friends and family members in attendance were addressed by Valedictorian Hanna Y. Lee and by commencement speaker Mary Beth Higgins ’75, most recently Chief Financial Officer of Caesars Entertainment Operating Company. Rev. William Kenny, Chaplain of Bishop Gorman High School and Pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, offered the invocation and presented the diplomas to the graduates. The commencement ceremony capped off two weeks of events in honor of the graduates which started on Friday, May 4, with the traditional senior barbeque. On Wednesday, May 16, Salutatorian, Jeffrey Wright, addressed his peers at the Academic Awards presentation. Newly appointed Bishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D., was the principal celebrant and homilist for the Baccalaureate Mass which was held at the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer on Thursday, May 17, 2018.

SUMMER WORK ASSIGNMENTS Many courses have Summer Work requirements. Find your assignments at: www.bishopgorman.org/summerwork
The third pillar of the Bishop Gorman mission statement is “create a community where service is valued and celebrated.” The goal of the Bishop Gorman Christian Service program is to help our students engage in acts of justice that promote a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In order to accomplish this goal, we ask that our students primarily engage in activities that fall under or are highly related to the following three areas: Corporal Works of Mercy, Spiritual Works of Mercy, and Themes of Catholic Social Teaching.
Bishop Gorman requires its students to participate in 100 hours of Christian service (25/year minimum) as a requirement for graduation. Effective immediately, the following change in policy takes effect: Students who are not current on their service hours at the beginning of an academic year may be denied participation in co-curricular activities (all non-classroom activities including but not limited to athletics, clubs, performances, field trips, etc.) until the required hours are submitted, verified, and approved. As of August 13, 2018, sophomores should have a minimum of 25 verified and approved hours, juniors should have a minimum of 50 verified and approved hours, and seniors should have a minimum of 75 verified and approved hours. Please remember to follow the established guidelines for Christian Service on the Bishop Gorman website available at www.bishopgorman.org/service. If you have any questions, please contact: Mrs. Portz (sportz@bishopgorman.org) or Brother Rob (rrobertson@bishopgorman.org).

CSI Class Activity
CONGRATULATIONS to the BGHS Jazz Ensemble on being invited to perform at the opening concert for Jazz In the Park at the Clark County Government Center on May 12, 2018. The students were the opening band for Ghost Note (featuring members of the very popular band called Snarky Puppy). This concert attracts over 2,000 people each year, making this event a great experience for the students.
This is a hands-on CSI classroom activity where students take on the role of forensics expert to solve a mock mystery murder case that happened in the classroom. CSI is an activity that aims at developing collaborative work and critical thinking skills. On Monday, April 9th, Mr. Nathan Radzak, a beloved English teacher, went missing and was later found deceased on campus. Students in Ms. DeJoria’s Honors Human Physiology classes spent time processing fingerprints, hair fibers, clothing fibers, and blood evidence in order to solve the crime surrounding this suspicious death. This crosscurricular project involves the Broadcast Journalism and Photography classes as well. In the end it was found out that Mr. Devlin and Ms. Cunningham were the culprits!
Gaels Theatre News!

Senior Farewell from Dean Anderson
Counselor’s Corner RISING SENIORS: Rising seniors are invited to attend the third annual Application Camp at Bishop Gorman High School. The task of applying to college is often the most stressful part of the senior year experience. The goal for the Application Camp is to help lower the stress of finding the right fit and meeting deadlines. By the end of our session, every senior who participates will have a complete Common Application (except the essay), a complete academic and activities resume, a better understanding of the college essay and a prioritized game plan for applying to college. The dates were chosen to coincide with the release of the Common Application for the 2018-2019 school year. The camp is 100% free! Competition for admissions and scholarships is fierce and applications need to be impeccable. Essays need to show personality and stand out in a stack of hundreds or even thousands of applications. This camp is a step in the right direction to give our students that edge. Dates: August 7 (A-D) August 9 (L-Q)
August 8 (E-K) August 10 (R-Z)
There’s a saying that every end is a new beginning. Never is this truer than when one graduates. While there were tears at graduation, there was also great joy. It is a time to let go of the past, which includes the familiar, and a time to embrace the future, which is the unknown. The Class of 2018 chose as its motto: Class of OneEight; Born To BGR8, and they lived up to that motto. Every student met all the requirements and walked at graduation. Additionally they left behind a legacy of giving freely to others and helping those in need by starting Shine A Light. Academically, on the fields and courts, and with their stage performances, this senior class was truly remarkable. These graduates possess the values shared by all GAELS and are prepared to take on the world. Each has developed the awareness and skills necessary to live in a global society as a person for and with others. They are able to think critically and are prepared for positive involvement in the larger community. They are ready to soar. So my message to them is the same as Christopher Robbin’s message to Pooh as written by A. A. Milne; “Promise me you’ll always remember; You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

his year’s annual wine tasting event, Passport, took Bishop Gorman parents, alumni & friends to Greece! The event was held at Crimson pool side on May 4th at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa, where guests enjoyed delicious drinks, tasty food, great entertainment and of course, some delicious wines! Guests were also able to cheer on our Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Playoffs! The indoor/outdoor venue was a great atmosphere for the evening’s beautiful weather! Along with the wines, beers, and specialty cocktails, there was a wide variety of Greek-inspired bites to enjoy! Over 70 auction items were bid on throughout the week and at the event with our “text-in” silent auction raising money for our Tuition Assistance Program. The night was a huge success and we could not have done it without our gracious performers, sponsors, volunteers and YOU! Special thanks to all of our auction donors: Red Rock Casino Resort Spa, Breakthru Beverage of Nevada, Missy Cochran Entertainment, Encore Productions, Lifetouch, Aloha Orthodontics, Johnny Legends and McDonalds! BGHS Football Volunteers Bishop Gorman had great representation at the Jonathan Ogden Football Skills Camp for at-risk youth! Our young men worked with nearly 200 camp participants in learning both skills and life lessons.
Pictured at right: Rome Odunze ’20, and Amir McGruder ’20, have fun with the campers at the Jonathan Ogden football camp for at-risk youth!
SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE Commitment to a consistent Christian service has proven to be very rewarding for many of our students. Two great examples of that are Max Berman ’20 and Lucca Pastorino ’21. They have found a bond in serving together in an after school tutoring program at St. Viator’s Catholic School. We are extremely proud of Max and Lucca! Here, they explain what this service has meant to each of them. Max: About once or twice a week, I volunteer at St. Viator to tutor students. I help them in a wide range of subjects, but it seems that math is the most common subject that students need my assistance. I usually go with my friend, Lucca Pastorino, because we both find it very interesting and helpful. I enjoy helping those who need help in their education. A child’s education is extremely important and an early understanding and love of education and learning is what is needed to continue in an educational career and life. Lucca: As of recent I have been going to St. Viator to tutor with my friend, Max Berman, and Lucca Pastorino ’21 I really enjoy it. I have great respect for educators and have wanted to see the world through their eyes for some time. This allowed me to try this, help kids with their classes, and get Christian service hours all at the same time. I genuinely understand the feeling of struggling in classes that some of these kids have and I am glad to give them the help I once needed.
