GAELS GIVE HOPE
notes of interest
Dream - Hope - Believe When students enter Bishop Gorman, the possibilities are endless. Many of them have a passion for something they HOPE will evolve into a job or career. They come to Bishop Gorman because they BELIEVE they will gain the proper knowledge and skills, in an environment that ultimately will give them the tools to exercise their passion and change the world. Not only do they have DREAMS, but our students have compassion and are concerned about the greater good. These are the same qualities we see in our alums, compassion and care for others and the ability to DREAM, HOPE and BELIEVE. We hope that Bishop Gorman played some part in fostering those qualities and helping you achieve your goals. Throughout this issue of the Gael Gazette you will read about the successes and accomplishments of our students as well as our alumni. Bishop Gorman alumni are over 11,000 strong and we are proud to call you Gaels! Hopefully you feel a sense of satisfaction when you reflect on your high school days and can appreciate the experiences you had during your time at Bishop Gorman. Even though it is a different day and age, today’s students are having the same experiences as a Gael, they just look a little different! It is that continuity that makes our community so special, the connection between our current students and our alumni. I want to issue a challenge for you to give back where and when you can. There are so many ways to get involved. Join us at a theatre production, game or service project; participate in our internship program; volunteer to coach our Mock Trial or We The People teams; make a gift to the annual fund or attend an event. These are just a few of the many opportunities open to you. We encourage you to stay connected with your alma mater through Facebook, Instagram and now Twitter (see page 11) and keep up with the latest on how to get involved in the Bishop Gorman community! When you reflect on your days at Bishop Gorman, remember your HOPES and DREAMS and those who BELIEVED in you. I look forward to seeing how you can impact the future of our students. There are many ways to give back and connect.

oth our men’s and women’s soccer teams had good years. They finished in 1st and 2nd place in the Howell Memorial Tournament in Reno, NV. Girls: Congratulations to Arlie Jones '17, Hannah Borgel '17, and Isabel Rolley '19 for receiving Division I Honors. Gianna Gourley '19 was named All-Southwest League. he women’s volleyball team had quite a season under long time coach Ed Van Meetren. After playing one of the most challenging schedules in the country, the team was ready for the playoffs. They beat Foothill High School to advance to the State Tournament at Coronado High School. The Lady Gaels gave it their all, but lost a close game to eventual State Champion, Coronado High School. Look for the team to make a big impact next year as several players return from this year’s team. Congratulations to Vashti Cunningham '16 and Alysia Nielson '17 (Mary Alice Nielson '80) and Paige Poggione '17 for being named 1st Team All-Sunset Region. Our women’s golf team continued their winning tradition under Head Coach Jim Stanfill '83 and Assistant Chris Samson '86. They went undefeated in the Sunset Southwest League, won the Sunset Regional Tournament, and finished 2nd in the two-day State Tournament which was held at Primm Valley Golf Club. Hunter Pate '18 shot even-par on the second day and finished as the State Runner-Up. Danielle Oberlander '17 shot a final-round 72 to finish 8th overall, and Rose Baral '19 shot a final round 79 to finish 10th in the State. One of our most consistent and successful sports over the years at Bishop Gorman has been the women’s tennis program, coached by Gordon Hammond. Under Coach Hammond, the Gaels have won numerous State Championships and are always one of the top teams in the state. This year was no different. The team won the Sunset Regional Championship and advanced to the State Tournament. Eventually, the team lost a close match and ended up as State Runners-Up. The team has a bright future and will be hard to beat in years to come. In the State Individual Tournament, the Gaels had the top two finishers. Angelique Friedrich '19 won the Singles State Championship, and teammate Amber Del Rosario '16 finished 2nd. The men’s and women’s cross-country team had a record number of participants this year and placed in several in-state and outof-state meets. Robert Daseler '16 (Frank Daseler '76) was the biggest award winner for the team, finishing 4th in the Sunset Regional Meet and qualifying for the State Tournament in Reno. In the State Championship race, Robert ran well and finished 13th overall in the state.

To further honor our veterans, Bishop Gorman students participated in a food drive in November to benefit the Douglas J. Green Memorial Foundation. The foundation was created by guest speaker, Ms. Suni Chabrow, mother of fallen veteran, SPC Douglas J. Green, US Army, who was killed in action in Afghanistan at the young age of 23. Remembering how much her son and his friends enjoyed receiving care packages while deployment, Ms. Chabrow said that she continues this practice in Doug’s memory so that other service men and women can have a taste of home while serving our country.

Each year, students and staff come together on a Saturday to tackle a large project in the community to make a difference; we call this event Gaels Give Hope. On October 24th, about 200 students spent a day at St. Therese HIV Center in Henderson. St. Therese Center serves over 7,000 HIV clients and their families with food, household items, medicines, and more to lessen the burden of dealing with the virus. Fr. Joseph O'Brien, OP, who manages the Center, is masterful at getting donations from grocery chains and a variety of outlets. Our students and staff spent their Saturday sorting donated goods, breaking down large size donations into manageable packaging

families, baking cookies for the clients, cleaning the facility, working on the landscape, and so many other jobs. At the end of the day when the group left, Fr. Joseph felt that a massive amount of work had been accomplished. This is just one of our Gaels Give Hope events, and we always know we have left our mark!
TEENS HELPING TEENS Gorman students make a difference in the lives of homeless teens. In September, BGHS students volunteered their time to help the organization Teens Helping Teens with their Street Outreach event. This non-profit organization was started by sisters Savannah '14 and Siena Prenger '18 to help youth in shelters, foster care, living on the streets, etc. On November 17th, Siena was honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy of the year.

ifteen years ago, Jill (Trione) Campbell '77 was named one of the most influential women in Southern Nevada by a local business publication. Today, she’s one of the most influential women in the communication industry. The Las Vegas native, who graduated from BGHS and UNLV, is the Executive Vice President and COO of Cox Communications. She has been with the company for 33 years. What has been the most significant step in your career? My current position as EVP/COO for Cox Communications. There are very few women in leadership positions in our industry so I am very proud of being one of them. What was your experience like as a Bishop Gorman student? And what was your favorite memory? I absolutely loved my high school experience at Gorman. I had a group of wonderful friends that are still friends today. My favorite memory was singing a solo at my high school graduation - pretty special.

What advice would you give students when they are choosing a career path? Choose a career that you are passionate about. I enjoy every day at work. You will spend so much time at work, you gotta love what you do! Have you had any challenges as a woman in such a high profile position? Yes. Sometimes people don't respect that a women can be a COO. I once had a customer ask to speak to the boss. I said that would be me and he said "No, the man in charge." :) It's important that corporations have diversity in the leadership ranks. Women make up more than 50% of the voting public. They control most purchasing decisions. It is just good business to have women in leadership roles!
Tell us about your family life, kids, pets? I am recently remarried to an amazing guy, George. I have three children. Lauryn is 30 and married to Tim. They have a two year old daughter, Cora. She calls me Gogo which is awesome. I have a 21 year old son, Colin, who is a junior at Northwestern University. I also have a ten year-old daughter, Afton, who is in fifth grade. We have a sweet chocolate Lab, LuLu and a crazy ragdoll cat, Magnolia.
What has been the most rewarding part of being in your position? The most rewarding part of being in my position is that I can mentor and sponsor other women to grow in their careers. I love watching people develop and reach their full potential. Who was your mentor and/or inspiration? My mother was very influential in my life. She was a real go getter, always trying new things and giving back to the Las Vegas community. She encouraged me to always challenge myself. She instilled a great work ethic in me and a sense that I could do anything I set my mind to doing. The Gael Gazette
