Dear Gaels
Christmas greetings from Bishop Gorman High School! It is hard to believe that 2016 is coming to a close, and we are welcoming a new year. Our first semester has been filled with much excitement and success. Our students continue to make us proud and exceed expectations, and we are only half way through the year! Our fall play, The Diary of Ann Frank was an impressive and moving performance by our young thespians (page 7); the music department continues to make impressive strides as they grow and improve; our seniors are waiting anxiously to hear from colleges and universities and our women’s volleyball team won the 1st State Championship in school history (page 4)! As you may have heard, our football team also had another successful season (page 5). Winning their 8th State Championship and 3rd National Championship is quite a feat, and it is really amazing how far our little high school has come in 60 years. I had the opportunity to travel to Texas and attend the Cedar Hill game. As I sat in the stands and listened to the people around me talk about our school, it was hard to believe they were talking about the same place I went to high school. I hear these same kinds of stories all the time, someone will be wearing their Gorman gear and get stopped and asked about our school. I always knew that Bishop Gorman was a special place but it is a surreal experience to have the entire nation exposed to what we take for granted every day. The #1 ranking in the nation is not just about our football team. Being on a national stage means so much more, now when people hear the words Bishop Gorman, it means something to them. They may have first heard of us because of our sports programs but when they think of Gorman they think of tradition, excellence and success. This is evidenced by our community as a whole and all that we have accomplished and contributed over the years. This year we are celebrating the different kinds of service in our community. Not only have our students established themselves as pillars of the community contributing thousands of hours to countless organizations, but our faculty and staff is known for their commitment to Catholic education. At this year’s Knight of the Gael we will be honoring those who dedicated 30 or more years of their lives to Bishop Gorman High School (page 13). Their service is an outward symbol of what we strive for as a school, a special institution that prides itself on our loyal and faithful community. Throughout the years we have evolved as a school but our sense of community has stayed the same. That is a tribute to our consistent employees who are steadfast in their love for a place that was not just a job but a home. It is a celebration of our tradition and longevity in Las Vegas. There are students all over the country wondering what it must be like to go to school here. What our classes, teachers, retreats and dances are like. What we do on a daily basis….what it is like to be a Gael. They assume that it is amazing and they think that we are so lucky. There may come a time in the not so distant future where this may not be the case and the glory could fade. But for right now, for today, we should celebrate our school and our community and support one another in all of our endeavors. We should relish every moment and continue to work hard and prove everyone right. It is awesome and we are lucky…We are Bishop Gorman!

This past October, our Gaels Theatre Guild presented the profound play, The Diary of Anne Frank, under the direction of Department Chair of Performing Arts, Elena Ferrante-Martin. The mission was to bring to light one of the most well-read pieces of literature as well as to pay tribute to all innocent victims of hate crimes from the past and unfortunately, current times. We Catholics have been journeying through the days of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis has asked us to practice mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity. In support of our Pope’s call for mercy, we at Gaels Theatre Guild shared the story of a young girl who has been referred to as the human face over the Holocaust. Although Anne Frank’s sufferings were immense, she believed that “in spite of everything, people are really good at heart”. We hope that our production guided audiences to reflect on past discretions and will learn from a history of anger and violence to propel humanity toward peaceful and positive progress in the future.
Regional Justice Center Observation In November, Mr. Nixon’s three Criminal Justice classes had an educational field trip to the Regional Justice Center. Students were welcomed by Assistant District Attorney, Christopher Lalli '85, who explained the layout of the Regional Justice Center and how the different courts (Justice, District, Supreme) are strategically placed throughout this beautiful structure. Students were able to witness several different types of legal cases. Assault with a deadly weapon (brick), vehicular embezzlement, a domestic violence case with a trial jury, and a double-murder case were some of the intriguing cases witnessed by our Criminal Justice classes. Judge Jessie Walsh '76 took time during court recess to meet and greet the class and answer any questions the students had about what they experienced in the court room. All in all, it was an awesome day in the Regional Justice Center to learn about law and the practices of our criminal justice system. The Gael Gazette

Theofwarm embrace a blanket The Riley Foley Blanket Drive began in 2006 when Riley Foley '06 visited the Las Vegas Rescue Mission with his mother, Julie Murray '78. He was inspired by the work the Las Vegas Rescue Mission was doing every single day in our community. When Riley found out that the Mission was running very low on blankets, he began calling everyone he knew. Friends, family, schools, community organizations, churches, government organizations, and many more jumped in to help. Eleven years later, we have collected over 15,000 blankets for the homeless. Throughout the years, the heart and soul of the drive has remained strong. The Bishop Gorman community continues to spread the word across Las Vegas and place boxes and fliers everywhere possible.

For the second year in a row, the staff and faculty had a day of service in the Las Vegas community and truly made a difference! St. Christopher’s School, needed some freshening up, and that is just what happened. After several hours of work our crew accomplished the following: repainting sport lines in the parking lot, overhauling the raised flower bed, repainting and cleanup of the Grotto, new centerpieces for all of the lunchroom tables, painting the lower part of the wall of the entire campus, adding a fountain in the courtyard and a cabana for teachers near their workroom, a new banner to welcome people to their campus, a fully refreshed and reorganized faculty lounge, and much, much more! This was a great bonding experience for our faculty to spend this concentrated time making something better for people in our community. We got to know each other in different ways, and the sense of accomplishment is hard to match! We look forward to next years’ service event!

a glimpse of her life from the Showroom to the Boardroom
When did you first discover your love for singing and performing? I think I came out of the womb singing! I sang my first solo at church when I was three years old. My mother was the Choir Director and my uncles were the musicians, so I was surrounded by a musically talented family. My cousins and I formed a singing group called The Chosen 5 when I was about ten years old and we continued to sing together until 2011. How did you continue to pursue your passion for singing at Bishop Gorman High School? At BGHS, I joined Harmony Express, a theater arts show choir. I was also a member of the concert band where I played the saxophone and clarinet. During my senior year, I earned the lead role of “Maria” in our production of “Westside Story.” That was the most musically challenging role I had ever taken on up to that point, and I believe it was the launching point for my future musical theater opportunities. What are some of your favorite memories from Bishop Gorman? I have fond memories of the campus on Maryland Parkway. It was small, but we didn’t care about that. I loved our high-energy pep rallies, thunderous basketball games, and Homecoming week was always a blast. Also, being named “Miss Gael” for my academic and athletic achievements in 1996 was a huge honor. I was a member of the National Honor Society and the senior varsity basketball team. I take such pride in being a part of the BGHS family.

As part of the Howard University Gospel Choir, you traveled the United States and abroad. Tell us about that experience, and how Bishop Gorman prepared you for college. Singing with the Howard Gospel Choir was one of the highlights of my collegiate experience. One of my favorite trips was to the U.S. Virgin Islands where we spent a week teaching high school students vocal and performance techniques. My time spent with Harmony Express taught me proper singing techniques, how to blend with other singers, and trained my ear for more advanced harmonies. All of which were used at Howard and beyond.

Do you have any advice for young singers who hope to pursue a music career? A career in the entertainment field is a labor of love. If you aren’t truly passionate about it, pursuing a music career will be challenging. The industry constantly changes, so you have to be able to adjust, adapt, and reinvent yourself to remain relevant. You have to able to handle rejection and criticism, constructive or otherwise. But! The reward of touring the world, landing the role you’ve worked hard for, recording your own album and receiving acknowledgment of your accomplishments is oh so sweet! Be ready to take the journey. It will be the best ride of your life. Tell us more about you. I still reside in Las Vegas. Along with singing locally in the Frankie Moreno Show, I also work for MGM Resorts International, as the Director of Special Events at New York-New York Hotel and Casino. I enjoy working out, reading and spending time with my family. I am also the proud auntie of two nieces and one nephew who bring me such joy. Who knows what the next adventure will be, but until revealed, I will continue to live my life like it’s golden.
BGHS Strides Toward Ending Alzheimer’s
ack in 2005, BGHS participated for the first time in the Las Vegas Walk to End Alzheimer’s, then known as the Memory Walk. Started by 45-year faculty member Margaret Foy, assisted by BGHS Librarian and alum Joanne Andrews '78, the team that year consisted of fewer than 20 students, faculty, staff, and family members. They were a spirited bunch. Fast forward to 2016: year 12 of Team BGHS, now 524 members strong! Town Square was filled with a sea of Gorman orange-clad students, siblings, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni during this year’s Walk on October 8. This year, as in the past several years, Team BGHS raised the most funds of any school in Southern Nevada, and placed 7th among all teams having raised almost $5,300. All of the money raised goes to the Alzheimer’s Association to benefit those affected by Alzheimer’s locally. Joanne said “We were the largest team, beating the next largest team in size by a factor of three. That’s pretty impressive; our entire BGHS family, but first and foremost our students, are really making a difference. I hope that we will be able to continue our efforts in putting an end to this disease as a school. I’d love to see more alumni participation!” The Gael Gazette

he Bishop Gorman Internship Program offers select students a unique opportunity to look into a potential career field during the summer prior to their senior year. Students are chosen to participate based on their GPA, written application and interview. The program offers students firsthand experience within various businesses including law, engineering, banking, marketing, design, medicine and more. This program was established in 2012 with seven participating businesses and has since come a long way. Thanks to the excellent job our students have done year after year and the support of our community, the program continues to grow and prosper. Alumni, parents, and friends of Bishop Gorman make up the participating organizations and provide our students with priceless opportunities throughout the Las Vegas Valley. In the program’s 5th year, eighteen businesses provided internships to over twenty juniors going into the senior year during the summer of 2016. 10
