notes of interest
At Bishop Gorman High School we remind our students of this all the time. We are a blessed community with many gifts and we must
"For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required." Luke 12:48
be good stewards of those gifts. I believe the pages of this Gazette will show just that. We as a society have been tested on many levels this year, all around the world, but especially here in our very own city of Las Vegas. Our job as educators is to make sure that our students understand how to face those challenges presented to them and become better people because of it. During this Advent season it is commonplace for people to be extra generous and think of those less fortunate in a more prevalent manner. At Bishop Gorman High School we think about those people every day. Every day we are addressing their needs, praying for them and doing whatever we can
to help. Whether it is providing Tuition Assistance for deserving students, raising money for the Matthew 25 Board to distribute, supporting a Miracle Minute, volunteering for non-profit organizations, helping a student find a solution to a problem, cheering each other on as we compete or perform, the Gaels always rise to the occasion. To whom much is given, much is expected... our student body has been blessed with many gifts and abilities and they are surpassing expectations. Our Theatre Department went out of their comfort zone and recreated the classic Wizard of Oz with different dance genres in the Wizard of Oz: a Dancer’s Story (page 6). The talent and courage of our students never cease to amaze me and they left their audiences in awe. We are so grateful to them for doing a special encore performance for our guests that were visiting during Homecoming, our alumni loved it! Our Music Department continues to make impressive strides as they perform around our community and remain competitive amongst their peers (page 6). Our football team won their 9th consecutive State Championship title and the women’s soccer team won their First State Championship since 2012 (page 4)! The list of colleges and universities our students have been accepted to is already impressive and we have barely passed the application deadlines. Make sure you check back in the spring for updates on all these amazing students. I am so grateful that I can count Bishop Gorman as a blessing in my life. Being part of this community has impacted me in more ways than I can ever imagine. On the occasion, that I share that sentiment with someone it is always surprising to me how many people feel the same way. When you are a staple for over 60 years in one place you have many opportunities to impact people; we never take that for granted and make sure that we are always doing our part for whatever people need. I hope you and your families have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are grateful for you and count you as one of our blessings! Go Gaels!

he Gaels Theatre Guild's production, The Dancer's Story of The Wizard of Oz was an innovative, imaginative and completely original production. The Dancer’s Story of The Wizard of Oz wove multiple styles of dance into one classic story. While Dorothy’s journey through Oz was “on pointe”, the other characters expressed their journey through the various dance styles of musical theatre, tap, the martial arts, jazz, modern, swing dance, the circus arts & magic, hip hop, and even the precision dance style of the Rockettes! Under the direction of Elena Ferrante-Martin, 78 students of the cast and crew team came together to ignite dreams that really did come true!

Riley Foley Blanket drive December 4 was a cold, blustery day on campus as the student’s kicked off the 12th annual Riley Foley Blanket Blowout. Students lined the parking lot with signs and buckets to collect blankets to be donated to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
Bishop Gorman rises to the occasion
This collection was started by Bishop Gorman graduate Riley Foley '08 (Julie Murray '78, Patrick Foley '77) who wanted to do something to help the homeless population keep warm during the winter. Riley started collecting blankets while he was a junior at BGHS and the drive has continued to this day. In past years the drive has collected over 3,000 blankets for those homeless who are living on the streets of Las Vegas. We are very excited to see what Bishop Gorman can raise this year!
for hurricane harvey victims
This fall has had many ups and downs, and Bishop Gorman steps in to help whenever there are low points As a result of the horrific damage that was caused by Hurricane Harvey, the students and staff of Bishop Gorman held a Miracle Minute to raise funds to assist as people began to rebuild their lives. In one minute, Bishop Gorman was able to raise over $11,000! We sent this money to Catholic Charities U.S.A. and continue to keep those affected in southeast Texas in our thoughts and prayers as they recover.
'tis the season to serve On Sunday, December 10, 2017, the Bishop Gorman Football Team and Cheerleaders participated in serving a special early Christmas meal to over 850 members of the community's less fortunate. This meal was held in memory of Frank Fertitta Jr. and sponsored by The Frank and Victoria Fertitta Foundation.

Tragedy can’t keep us down! Our hearts, like so many others, were broken by the news of the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas. The students and staff of Bishop Gorman had many connections to victims and other concert goers. In response to this tragedy, everyone kept asking “What can we do?” It was a tremendously helpless feeling and we wanted to take some action to help, so, once again, we had another Miracle Minute. This time the beneficiaries of our nearly $9,000 donation were strictly the victims and their families. Additionally, there was a desire to actively do more, so we collected items from our families and created 1,000 “Blessing Bags” as a thank you to some of the first responders for this tragedy. Deliveries were made to police officers, firemen, ambulance companies, 911 operators, and the coroner’s office to say “thank you” for their time, love, and assistance.

BGHS Internship Program: giving students insight into possible careers
T
he Bishop Gorman Internship Program was established in 2012 with seven participating businesses and has since come a long way. Thanks to the excellent job our students have done year after year and the support of our community, the program continues to grow and prosper. In the program’s sixth year, eighteen businesses provided internships to over twenty-seven juniors going into their senior year during the summer of 2017. Alumni, parents, and friends of Bishop Gorman make up the group of supporters of this program and provide our students with priceless opportunities throughout the Las Vegas Valley. We are proud to have ongoing partnerships with businesses and welcome new participants each year. “My advice for future interns in this program is to enter it with a complete open mind,” Taylor Brown '18 says, who interned at Alston Construction. “Keep your options open because you never know what you may like or may not like anymore. Being able to see several different businesses throughout my internship has allowed me to get a better grasp on who I am as a person and what I want in life.” We are always looking for new opportunities for our students. If you are interested in hosting a Bishop Gorman student as an intern for the summer of 2018, please contact Internship Program Coordinator, Lauren (Blaney) Blasek '04, for more information. Thank you to this year’s participants: 8 News Now, Alston Construction, Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art - Tarissa (Tiberti) Lacey '94, Bank of Nevada – Vince Telles '82, Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, Craig P. The 32nd Annual Bishop Gorman Golf Classic was held on Thursday, November 2nd at Spanish Trail Country Club and was most certainly one for the books! A special addition to this year’s tournament was our “Helicopter Ball Drop”. Players were able to buy numbered golf balls which were taken up 200 feet in the air and dropped over a green by Maverick Helicopters. The first three balls to land in the hole or that were closest-to-the-pin, won! Money raised from the Golf Classic supports our students and the school's Tuition Assistance Program.
Many thanks to all of our golfers, volunteers and sponsors who were a part of this event and helped to make it a success! A special thanks to our Title Sponsor: Golden Entertainment and other Major Sponsors: Lynne-Ruffin Smith Charitable Foundation, XL Landscape Development, XL Concrete Masonry, Terrible Herbst, Bentar Development, Howard and Howard, CC Construction, Extreme Concrete, Helix Electric, Harley Davidson Las Vegas, Chapman Auto Group, Breakthru Beverage, Par 3 Landscaping, High Desert Petroleum, Rafael Framers, Trimark, Aloha Orthodontics, YESCO, Intershine Graphics, Maverick Helicopters, Jostens Lance & Roxanne Shoen, and 7-Up. Between the beautiful weather and all of the great supporters at the tournament, it was a fun day for all. The day was especially exciting for our tournament winners! Congratulations to our low gross winners from Wells Cargo and our low net winners from Republic Services.
We look forward to the 33rd Annual Golf Classic in Fall 2018 and hope to see you all there!

Y
ou taught Religion at Bishop Gorman from 1994 - 1999 and now this past October, you came back as the Campus Ministry Service Coordinator, what brought you back? Bishop Gorman is a place that has always been close to my heart and when I was asked to consider moving from St. Viator to join the Campus Ministry team I was thrilled. I have so many fond memories of my earlier years at Bishop Gorman and I was so excited and happy to return in the role of Service Coordinator. There are so many great people involved in the Bishop Gorman community and I am proud to be a part of it again. What is different and what is the same about Bishop Gorman since you have been back compared to your time here in the past? Well, obviously the biggest difference is the beautiful new campus. We were always seen as the scrappy, little place that had to work harder than everyone else to prove ourselves. People would show up at the Maryland Parkway campus and look down on us, but we knew what we had wasn’t based on the buildings but on whom we were as people of God. We knew, even back then, that we were the best school in the city. I feel that same spirit here on Hualapai. The buildings are certainly sparkling, but the feeling of what this school is all about is still central. The message of forming young people who value service and faith is still the mission of Bishop Gorman.

GORMAN GAEL!
At what point in your life did you decide to become a Brother? What led you to this decision? I was a so called “late vocation”. I did not enter the Viatorians until I was 30 years old. I graduated from college and my first job as a teacher was at a Catholic school administered by the Viatorians. I slowly became acquainted with the priests and brothers and began to feel called to their life of service and ministry. After 6 years of working as a lay teacher at the school, I joined them. That was way back in 1987. I celebrated 30 years of vows this year and can confidently say my vocation has been a blessing that I never would have expected. I would not change anything at all. Bishop Gorman students are required to complete at least 100 hours of Christian Service before they graduate, how do you think this helps shape our students and prepares them for the future? I feel that our students benefit in that the Theology they are learning in the classroom is brought to life in what they experience through their service. Christian Service, hopefully, is something that becomes a way of life for them even after they graduate and enter their careers and is no longer a requirement. We are forming the caring leaders of tomorrow who will take these lessons and continue to reach out to those who are accounted of little importance. I have enjoyed reconnecting with many of my “old” friends from years ago. So many people are still here on the faculty and staff and I enjoy the camaraderie. I also enjoy the alumni on the faculty and staff who I had the pleasure of teaching and now also finding out that there are students here whose parents I taught in the 90’s. It has been a great homecoming. I feel blessed in so many ways to be a Gael again.
