s the school year begins I want to assure you that the safety and security of our students and staff continues to be the number one priority at Bishop Kenny High School. The alarming events of the past few years have increased awareness of the safety of our schools, work and public spaces. To that end, before the close of the last school year our summer projects were realigned. We have enhanced not only our security plan and procedures, but the security of our facilities as well. I am confident that ours is a school that offers our students and staff the most updated and comprehensive security plan possible. A brief review of this plan would include the presence of a daily, off-duty JSO officer, monthly weather, fire, lock-down and active shooter drills, and campus-wide radio communication. In a departure from long-standing practice, it is now a school policy that the doors on both occupied and unoccupied classrooms remain locked throughout the school day. Additionally, we have limited the outside access to campus entrances, and have increased the number of campus security cameras from 32 to 109. All of these measures have been taken to provide the safest possible environment for our students, staff, and visitors. In addition to the significant and costly investments made in the area of security other improvements were also completed over the summer. Most importantly, after 22 years of nearly daily use, the Bishop Paul F. Tanner Chapel has undergone a significant cosmetic refresh including new paint and carpeting, refinished wood doors, trim and brass hardware. Additionally, two new HVAC units and new energy efficient lighting have been installed. Please feel free to join us for daily Mass at 7:10 as your schedule allows to see these improvements first hand. The three roll-down gates that previously secured the 100 building have been replaced by glass storefronts complete with a programmable electronic locking system that can be controlled remotely in the event of an emergency. Many other perimeter gates have been fitted with these same electronic locking systems. Finally, the home and visitors bleachers at the football stadium have been thoroughly inspected, professionally re-welded, and are ready for another great season of Crusader Football. I look forward to seeing you at one of the many games, performances or other events in store for the 20182019 school year. Go Crusaders!

banners that Thegreetnewly-installed visitors driving on and off campus are representative of many aspects of the Bishop Kenny experience. It is no coincidence that the first banner in the line-up is Faith; because without the strong commitment to our Catholic faith that is central to daily life at BK, we would be little more than any other college-prep high school. While faith is the first and most important element of a BK education, the seven subsequent banners depict the possibilities just waiting to be explored in our classrooms, labs, playing fields, and creative spaces. The BK experience includes opportunities and challenges, as well as yet-to- be found interests, friendships, and so much more. We invite you to explore these programs and opportunities and you’ll see why, each year, so many new and legacy families say yes to Bishop Kenny High School. We relied on our students for the pictures that are featured on the banners and thank them for their participation in this project.

Prayer Service The Bishop Kenny community gathered to pay prayerful tribute to the 17 lives that were lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on the day of the National School Walk-Out last spring. According to Deacon Robert DeLuca, “A school-wide prayer service seemed both an appropriate response to the senseless acts of violence in our schools and a positive display of unity with those urging government leaders to enact laws to protect our school children.” Principal Todd Orlando, Rev. Martin Raj, Deacon Robert DeLuca and members of the Student Council lead the service that included music, Gospel and other liturgical readings. Bishop Kenny supports this and other organized, peaceful, respect-life protests including the national March for Life in Washington, DC and the Jacksonville Stand for Life.

Sincerely,

Principal

Student Council Officers participated in a schoolwide prayer service on March 14, National School Walkout Day. Each carried a flower in memory of the 17 lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland, FL and one flower for all of the other lives lost this year.

Retirements from BKHS The custom at BK is to honor retiring faculty and staff members at a Mass and luncheon at the end of the school year. This past year we celebrated twice, bidding farewell to six members of the family whose combined service to our community totals 128 years. At the end of the first semester Mrs. Cheryl O’Connor, assistant to Principal Todd Orlando and before that, assistant to former President Father Houle, was honored at the annual Christmas Mass and luncheon. After 29 years of outstanding and dedicated service, Cheryl bid farewell to a long and distinguished career at BK. In June, at the end-of-school-year Mass and luncheon, we celebrated the long and distinguished service of five more Bishop Kenny employees. Three faculty members, Mrs. Lucy Chastain, Mrs. Nan Fleugel, and LtCol Lynn Seckinger, and two members of the support staff, Mrs. Dorothy Grippi and Mrs. Carreme Nackashi, were honored. Together, their combined years of service to BK totals 99 years! The entire Bishop Kenny Community celebrates the many contributions of these dedicated members of our school family. We send best wishes for a long, healthy, and happy retirement to all.

Scott Holmes ‘09 pictured at a surprise ceremony honoring LtCol Seckinger on the occasion of his retirement after 18 years as Bishop Kenny High School’s Senior Naval Science Instructor. Capt. Schmitt served as Master of Ceremonies and Capt. Holmes was guest speaker. These young men, along with many other former students, were on hand to honor LtCol eckinger for his years of leadership and the positive impact he has made on the lives of so many Bishop Kenny graduates.

After 29 years of service to BK, Cheryl O’Connor retired as Administrative Assistant in December of 2017. Pictured are Cheryl with her children Patrick ‘97 and Devon O’Connor ’00, Cheryl’s father Riley ReQua, and Principal Todd Orlando.

Mrs. Dorothy Grippi, Mrs. Carreme Nackashi, Mrs. Lucy Chastain, Mrs. Nan Fleugel, and LtCol Lynn Seckinger were joined by family and friends at a retirement Mass and luncheon in June.

THE FUND

The following pages detail the results of the inaugural Fund for Bishop Kenny High School. Designed to expand annual giving beyond a financial assistance-only appeal, the Fund for BKHS welcomes and encourages generosity on behalf of other projects, improvements, and initiatives. Your response has been one of increased generosity, thank you. Both unrestricted giving, gifts to financial aid and other needs of the school as identified by the administration, and restricted giving, donor-directed contributions on behalf of specific projects have increased in 2017- 2018. A total of $238,766 was raised as of June 30, the end of Bishop Kenny’s fiscal year. The combined response to the traditional mailing and phone calling, online giving, our first-ever Day of Giving, and follow-up appeals resulted in an increase of nearly $20,000 over the previous year. Donations to the Fund for BKHS, individual annual scholarships, and contributions received through the efforts of the BK Boosters provide additional generous support to our school. We thank all of our donors and look forward to another successful year of Annual Giving to BKHS during the 2018-19 school year. Please know that the intentions of our benefactors are remembered at daily Mass in the Bishop Paul F. Tanner Chapel.

32nd Annual Auction Net proceeds from the BK Boosters auction held in April reached $138,000, a new record. The club will use the money for projects that benefit BK’s academic and athletic programs. Nearly 500 guests attended this year’s auction held on Saturday, April 21. Dinner and dessert were provided by Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Bruster’s Ice Cream. Auctioneer Luman Beasley, who volunteered his services for the evening, kept the bidding going as an enthusiastic crowd raised their paddles in the live auction portion of the program. The silent auction tables featured beautiful gift baskets, gift certificates, getaways, and items including electronics, sports memorabilia, sporting goods, housewares, jewelry, artwork and more.

y Saturda , 2019 April 6

Since 1986 the auction has generated net proceeds of $2.5 million and has helped to pay for everything from team uniforms and postseason transportation for athletic teams to air-conditioning the gym, adding sound equipment to the Performing Arts Center, paying a $100,000 pledge to resurface the track, and underwriting the cost of sending students to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for Life. The list of auction donors on pages 12-13 includes many BK Alumni. Please join them in supporting this important annual event. If you would like to be an event sponsor or contribute an item or service to the 2019 BK Boosters Auction please contact Sheila Marovich in the Office of Advancement 398-7545 or advancement@bishopkenny.org. This year’s Dilly Dilly basket featuring items inspired by the popular series of Budwesier commercials was a big hit. (L-R) Debbie Hanania and Katherine Gibson assemble this very heavy basket that featured plenty of bottles of Bud, t-shirts, koozies and much more. More than 100 baskets were put together by our dedicated crew this year. Thank you all! The jewelry table is always a popular silent auction station. The silent auction features over 400 items each year. Bidders check their bids often throughout the evening.

BK Boosters Chairman Anthony Parete raises his paddle during the Live Auction. 105 items were sold by Auctioneer Luman Beasley during a very lively live auction generating $72,550.

PREVIEW BK

Say Cheese - Freshmen participating in Preview BK gathered for a group picture in the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center on the last day of the program. They wore tie-dye shirts made during one of the activity periods .

In July, 101 members of the incoming freshman class participated in Preview BK, an optional 3-day sneak-peek at campus life – Bishop Kenny-style. The students participated in hands-on, fast-paced activities designed to, among other things, provide an opportunity to make friends with future classmates, navigate the campus, and read the rotating class schedule. Instructors and volunteer student counselors emphasized team building and success strategies for freshman year throughout the program.

Council of Catholic Academies

Choose Excellence. Choose Catholic Schools. At the Jacksonville airport, in business magazines, newspapers, billboards, and social media the unmistakable mark of the Council of Catholic Academies is visible all over the First Coast. Using a series of ads featuring uniform-clad students ranging in age from kindergarten thru high school the message is clear; there’s an excellent Catholic school for students of every age and in every corner of the Diocese of St. Augustine.

Back (L-R) Seniors: Paul Ashley, Emma Jane Warren, Aaron McAdams, and Council of Catholic Academies Chairman, Lou Walsh. Front (L-R) Senior Cooper Huskey and Council of Catholic Academies Executive Director, Lesley Harvey. The students pictured here were recruited from the Multimedia Design 2 class. They put their skills and talents into action to shoot an informational video describing some of the financial options available to parents interested in enrolling students in a Catholic school.

After only one year of operation the CCA, which was formed by the business community in coordination with Bishop Felipe J. Estévez, has done much to forward its mission of cultivating and promoting excellence in Catholic education. Volunteer Chairman Lou Walsh and Executive Director Lesley Harvey BK ’97 have been instrumental to the success of the organization. The board consists of business men and women, school principals, school teachers, and parents that have various talents and skills, but all share the common passion for excellent Catholic education. According to Mr. Walsh, “As a board, we share wisdom, resources, and a passion for taking good to great and work together to help all schools in the diocese achieve their highest potential.” According to Principal Todd Orlando, “Bishop Kenny is grateful to be included in the marketing and advertising programs undertaken by the CCA. We are happy to host meetings, serve as a photo shoot location, lend our facilities or, in short, be of service in any way that supports the efforts of these volunteers who believe so strongly in the good that takes place not only on BK’s campus, but also, on the campuses of all 35 Catholic schools in our Diocese.”

AROUND CAMPUS

N

early 50 Bishop Kenny students and chaperones including BK Chaplain Fr. Martin Raj and Deacon Robert DeLuca boarded a bus headed for Washington, D.C. to participate in the 45th annual March for Life In January. The March, which is the world’s largest pro-life event, was held at the National Mall on Friday, January 19. We are proud of these students and chaperones who marched in peaceful solidarity with thousands of people from throughout the United States and around the world, in protest of legalized abortion.

March for Life 2018

A special thanks to the BK Boosters for underwriting the $8,500 cost of the bus transportation for this important event.

Mary Awards Program (L-R) Seniors Emma Jane Warren, Kylee Meehan, and Madeline Ward were honored as finalists in this year’s Mary Awards program sponsored by St. Vincent’s Healthcare. Each of these young women was a finalist in the following categories: athletics, philanthropy and academics respectively. The Mary Awards were created to recognize young women who lift up our society through their values, lifestyle and leadership.

Bishop Kenny High School Students Participate in the

Hour of Code The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries. Simply put, it is a one-hour introduction to Computer Science, designed to demystify “code,” to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of Computer Science. The Hour of Code has become a worldwide effort to celebrate Computer Science, starting with 1-hour coding activities, but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. The grassroots campaign is supported by more than 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide. Spearheaded by Mr. Scott Thomas, BK’s AP Computer Science Principles teacher, along with members of the Academic and Technology departments, students first installed the Swift Playgrounds app, an introductory coding app developed by Apple, to their school-issued iPads. Using the app, students participated in an Hour of Code “playground” where they learned fundamental coding skills while playing a game. The goal of this activity was to spark student interest in coding and to show that anyone really can learn to code! Research indicates that the ability to write code could very well be the next big divide for getting jobs in the near future. Here are some interesting statistics compiled by Code.org:

◆ 90% of parents want their child to study Computer Science, but only 40% of schools teach it

◆ 71% of all new jobs in STEM are in computing, but only 8% of STEM graduates are in Computer Science

◆ Women who try AP Computer Science in high school are ten times more likely to major in it in college, and Black and Hispanic students are seven times more likely.

◆ A Computer Science major has the potential to earn 40% more in their lifetime than the average college major

◆ Computing jobs are the #1 source of new wages in the US. There are approximately 500,000 current openings for Computer Science jobs across every industry and in every state.

◆ Computer jobs openings are projected to grow at twice the rate of all other jobs Source: www.hourofcode.com, the official Hour of Code website from Code.org

NJROTC Hosts AFA CyberCamp The Bishop Kenny NJROTC unit was one of a select number of units from across the United States invited to participate in the 2018 Air Force Association’s (AFA) CyberCamp Program this summer. As an AFA CyberCamp host, BKNJROTC received software and a hands-on curriculum kit designed to teach cyber safety, cyber ethics, and critical network security skills to students. BK Naval Science instructor Master Chief Kevin Harris was the lead instructor, and Mr. Tom Nguyen, a member of the BK’s IT department, assisted throughout the week. The camp culminated with an exciting team-based competition putting campers in the role of IT administrators tasked with finding and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated network environments. The local AFA CyberCamp competitions closely mimic AFA’s annual CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program was created by the Air Force Association in 2009 to attract students to cybersecurity and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. In addition to the annual National Youth Cyber Defense Competition and the new AFA CyberCamp program, CyberPatriot has three other programs for various age groups.

NJROTC cadets attended an elective CyberCamp over the summer.

In addition to hosting one of the first AFA CyberCamps, BKNJROTC will field 5 teams in the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition this fall. Written in cooperation with: C/CPO John Sellock Cyber Patriot Team Commander Bishop Kenny NJROTC

The evening started with a receiving line in which the cadets introduced their dates to the 2017-2018 staff. During dinner, a video featuring senior cadets sharing their reflections and reminiscences of their time in the unit entertained the gathering.

150 cadets and guests attended the Annual NJROTC Cadet Ball.

LtCol Seckinger was surprised with an early retirement gift. Two cadets broke out in a dance routine from his favorite movie, Blues Brothers. After that the dance floor opened and there was no holding back. Everyone had a wonderful time and danced the night away. When asked if he had a good time, Jackson Petry responded, “Hands down one of the best moments of my life spent with the people I truly care about.” He continued, “All the guys looked sharper than a knife, and all the girls looked prettier than any model.” It was a truly memorable evening. A special thanks to the Cadet Ball committee and all who helped achieve the perfect night. It took weeks of planning, but the night was worth every minute. Submitted by; Gabriella Hensley

BK Students Launch Rockets BK Digital Information Technology students successfully launched rockets designed in the classroom and manufactured on the 3-D printers. Channel 4 was even on hand to broadcast the launches live on the morning show.

BK Digital Information Technology Students under the direction of teacher Scott Givonetti had a chance to demonstrate STEM Education in Action in May. The students successfully launched rockets that were designed in the classroom and manufactured in part, by using one of the school’s 3-D computers. At

the heart of the project was the design process which provides a framework to teach 21st century concepts which include collaboration and creativity. Students learned 3D modeling and printing using a variety of software and honed their math skills with applied trigonometry in combination with the clever application of an

iPad app used for home construction. Mr. Givonetti observed, “STEM literacy is more than just math or science knowledge; it’s learning to work together in a technology-rich future where challenges will require a mix of skills found in this project.”

Robotics Team Hosts Home Tournament Fourteen Robotics teams representing high schools and middle schools from throughout Northeast Florida gathered in the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center at BKHS to challenge each other in timed matches of metal on metal in the First Tech Challenge (FTC). First Robotics, a non-profit national organization, is self-described as more than robots. According to the organization, “Participation in First Robotics is proven to encourage students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields, inspire them to become leaders and innovators, and enhance their 21st century work-life skills.” Many local students have experienced the fun of robotics in earlier grades through participation in the First Lego League (FLL). Bishop Kenny, along with the generous support from sponsors Averitt and Co. P.A., First, Rockwell/Collins, and Qualcomm, was pleased to bring this year’s challenge, Relic Recovery, to Bishop Kenny High School, home of the Crusaders First Tech Challenge Team #12585! This event, sponsored in association with Renaissance Jax, the First Coast affiliate of First Robotics, was Bishop Kenny’s first opportunity to host a robotics tournament.

Members of the Bishop Kenny Robotics team compete at the inaugural Robotics Tournament hosted at BKHS.

Honor Societies Induction Program The Carla Harris Performing Arts Center served as the location for the annual Bishop Kenny High School Honor Societies Induction Ceremony held in March. In all, 230 students attended the program where, taking into account those students being inducted into multiple honor societies, 316 new members were admitted to one or more of the nine participating organizations. The Performing Arts Center was full with an estimated 600 plus students and parents for the occasion. A brief reception, which also provided an opportunity for families to take pictures, followed the program. Organizations participating in the program included: National Art Honor Society The International Quill & Scroll Honor Society International Thespian Society Tri-M Music Honor Society Société Honoraire de Francais de Bishop Kenny

T

he annual Kairos retreat sponsored by the Department of Campus Ministry is a 3-day Catholic retreat for junior and senior students. The focus of the retreat is to allow students to have a personal experience of God through getting to know their peers better. Now in its 6th year it has become so popular that the 45 available spots are filled within minutes of the opening of registration. A beautiful tradition of the Kairos experience has come not from retreat facilitators, teachers or by design, it has come from the example set by the very first group of Kairos alumni who were so moved by their retreat experience that they took it upon themselves to return to Camp St. John the following year to make breakfast on Sunday morning for the current participants. This year, following the example of those who came before them, 20 members of the Class of 2017 woke up in the dark early morning hours and drove from Jacksonville, Gainesville and beyond to arrive at Camp St. John at 6:00 am on the last day of the spring retreat. They were on a mission to prepare a celebration breakfast for this year’s participants. The Sunday sendoff breakfast has become one of the highlights of the weekend. These young alumni dress up, play music, and truly embody the family of Kairos. For more information on Kairos please contact Alex Maples at maplesa@bishopkenny.net

Pat McMahon ‘71 Honored Congratulations to BK alumnus Pat McMahon ’71 who has been inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. McMahon is now in his ninth season with the New York Yankees organization and his sixth as their Director of International Player Development. Prior to the Yankees, McMahon amassed 30-plus years of combined college and high school coaching experience. He served seven seasons (2001-07) as head coach at the University of Florida leading the Gators to a runner-up finish in the College World Series in 2005 and a 231143-1 record. The 2015 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award winner was also head coach at Old Dominion (1990-94) and Mississippi State (1998-2001). McMahon was drafted by the New York Mets during his senior year at Bishop Kenny but turned down a pro contract to play in college. He played for two years at St. John's River College and two years at Stetson as a pitcher. McMahon and his wife live in Gainesville, Florida.

Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship This year’s Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented at the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the King School. Julie’s daughter Kaylee Burke and her son Grayson made the presentation to Regan Yates who is now a freshman at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in memory of Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually. Each recipient is awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS. Julie Joseph married Ronald Burke while attending college. They had two children, Kaylee, a 2010 BK graduate and a son Ronnie, who graduated in 2014. Julie passed away in 2004 after suffering complications from a heart condition.

Class of 1961

Better Late Than Never*

Members of the Bishop Kenny Class of 1961 celebrated their 55th reunion in October of 2016 at the Sheraton Four Points at Jacksonville Beach. A total of 34 classmates, special guests, spouses, significant others, and friends were in attendance. The evening activities were so much fun and the food at the hotel was phenomenal. Needless to say, we all had a wonderful time reminiscing and catching up. Although there were other activities in which we could have participated, we all seemed to prefer to stay together and enjoy the limited time we had over the weekend. 55 YEARS

We had the wonderful pleasure of two special guests; Msgr. Michael Devine (Father Mike), who taught freshman boys’ Religion class at BK, officiated at Mass for our 28 deceased classmates. The Mass took place at St. Paul's Catholic Church at the beach. We were also happy to have the opportunity to celebrate Father Mike's 85th birthday that evening with a huge birthday cake and everyone singing Happy Birthday. Needless to say, Father Mike had many great memories to share and we tremendously enjoyed having him with us. He is now considered an honorary member of our class. Our other special guest and speaker was Todd Orlando, Principal of

BKHS. Mr. Orlando provided us with lots of information about the current happenings at BK. Todd’s lovely wife Stacey, a member of the class of ’84, also provided gracious commentary. During our reunion, we conducted three fundraisers, a 50/25/25, a silent auction, and a sale of handmade items with 15% to us, which netted us $1,000. The proceeds were presented to the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Augustine from the class of 1961. The presentation was made at a luncheon at the Columbia Restaurant in St. Augustine. Our class holds several luncheons each year for all who can attend in and around the Jacksonville area. We also have a standing request to any classmate coming to Jacksonville to advise us in advance, as this provides a great opportunity for us to get together. We ask all our classmates to keep in touch and keep us informed of all events pertinent to the Class of 1961. An updated booklet on all classmates was provided. We appreciate the efforts of all who attended, and look forward to everyone attending our 60th Reunion in 2021. Class of 1983 35 YEARS The Bishop Kenny Class of 1983 gathered in June to enjoy our 35th reunion at the Hotel Indigo, Tapestry Park. It was a fabulous evening of reminiscing with dear old friends. We discussed our upcoming 40th and are already looking forward to 2023! Great food, great company, great tequila shots, and an evening that ended with us closing down the piano bar across the cobblestone path. Some things never change! We attempted to get a group photo, but didn’t quite get everyone. Fun was had by all. Submitted by: Joan Tubel Stephens ‘83

25 YEARS

Nearly 100 members of the Bishop Kenny class of 1993 gathered to celebrate their 25th class reunion on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Some of the group traveled from as far away as California, and others came from as nearby as San Marco for this milestone reunion. The event kicked off at 4:00PM with a campus tour guided by Coach Orlando. Everyone was very impressed with the additions made to campus. From the Chapel to the football stadium, so many improvements have been made. The classmates who haven’t been back to BK since graduation were especially amazed at the changes and improvements.

appetizers free of charge! It was a great evening that didn’t wrap up until nearly midnight. It was a great opportunity to catch up with each other in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. According to Chairman Mary Bullock Harms, “This format was perfect for our class: casual and fun. We’re looking forward to the next one.”

After the tour everyone gathered at the Mudville Grille for drinks and appetizers. Special thanks to Louis for providing our party venue and
