from the PRINCIPAL

Dear BK Family,

In reflecting on the 2023-24 school year, I am struck by three themes: legacy, forward progress, and noise. These seemingly unrelated concepts were the tightly intertwined themes that carried us through the year and impacted our daily lives as we asked ourselves:

What is my BK legacy?

How can I pursue progress?

How do I find quiet in a noisy world so I can achieve these goals?

Bishop Pohlmeier prefaced our school year last summer by meeting with principals to discuss key issues facing students, schools, and society. The conversation included the effects of digital technology on human interaction and thought processes, the overwhelming speed at which technology and artificial intelligence are evolving, and the relentless onslaught of information that bombards us all daily. More than ever, parents and schools must work together to be the ultimate sounding boards for students navigating these advances.

One of the ways we focus on that at Bishop Kenny is ensuring we provide a safe environment for students. This isn’t solely a conversation about physical safety but creating a sanctuary from outside noise. An absolute tidal wave of outside voices and distractions compete for our attention and challenge our students’ belief systems and ability to hear what we say. Our message as Catholics is already countercultural. To be heard above the din and against the tide, we have to be purposeful. Many Biblical teachings can guide us, but St. Paul encourages us to put on the full armor of God so that we can stand firm against the enemy and his weapons. How fitting for us as Crusaders to take up that image. Faith is our foundation and our shield. It’s what we were built on, the legacy we promise, the legacy we strive to leave behind, and it’s what quiets the noise.

Bishop Kenny students have not only the freedom but an invitation to rest in spirituality and community and freely pursue truth and wisdom without fear. A conversation about physical space is also really fitting for us right now. In January, we embarked on the Legacy of Faith Capital Campaign to continue to build the BKHS Endowment and support BK Athletics. This long overdue investment in BK Athletics brings two new innovative buildings to campus. It will allow us to better serve our ever-growing percentage of students who participate in athletics while also improving our ability to host events and visitors, gather alumni and friends of Bishop Kenny, and build the Crusader spirit of our community. It’s an exciting time on our campus as we grow and continue to build the BK of tomorrow.

Class of 2024, we are proud of your contributions to our legacy and warmly welcome you as the newest members of our alumni family. We pray for each of you as you embark on the next chapter in your lives, and we offer encouragement as you set out to achieve new dreams. There is a simplicity in looking for success that we cannot overlook: seek first the kingdom of God. Faith is the framework we need to contribute and grow. Let it help you seek a worthwhile legacy, pursue forward progress, and quiet the noisy outside world. Congratulations, graduates!

Tradition. Excellence. Faith.

Dear friends,

from the THE EDITOR

As we move closer to our 75th anniversary, I am proud to share that Bishop Kenny is hitting new milestones that speak to our strong roots in the Jacksonville community. We are starting to graduate third-generation legacy graduates; we have an alumna in the mayor’s office; more than 57 alumni have entered religious life, including two new seminarians from recent class years; and 29 alumni returned to Kingman Avenue to work at our school in the 2023-24 school year. The Crusader family is thriving!

In this issue of The Avenue, we celebrate and recap the 2023-24 school year. We welcomed 356 new freshmen to campus and bid a bittersweet farewell to 314 seniors as they move on to college. We had 16 new faculty and staff join our campus and we wished three favorites a happy retirement. Numerous Crusaders signed to play sports at the collegiate level, and we continued to cheer for our various Crusaders in professional sports. Our athletic teams thrived, with 19 of 23 making it to postseason play. Girls cross country brought the state championship back to BK, boys and girls track and field celebrated various individual and relay state titles, while boys swimming proudly earned their third consecutive state championship.

Construction began on the new Betty & Jack Demetree Family Athletic Training Center, and renovations continued in our classrooms, completing the renovations of the 400, 500, and 600 Buildings. New or expanded technology solutions were introduced to support faculty and students, including using Canvas, an award-winning learning management system for schools that facilitates digital learning.

Most of all, we shared moments of triumph and sadness as a campus family, united by our faith and the shared belief that we are walking through life together. We hope our students, faculty, staff, and alumni always remember that their time on campus was merely the start of a lifetime as Crusaders.

graduation JUNE 1, 2024

Commencement Speaker

Timothy J. Corrigan is a Jacksonville native who attended St. Paul’s Riverside grade school. He graduated from Bishop Kenny in 1974, where he met his wife of 43 years, Nancy. While at Kenny, he played football and CYO basketball and was also co-anchor of Bishop Kenny News. An honors graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Duke University School of Law, Corrigan clerked for the Honorable Gerald B. Tjoflat of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and then spent 14 years in private practice in Jacksonville. He joined the federal bench as a Magistrate Judge in 1996. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Corrigan to fill a newly created U.S. District Judgeship in the Middle District. He became the court’s chief judge in November of 2020.

As a federal judge for almost 28 years, Judge Corrigan has presided over several high-profile cases. As chief judge, he administers a district that stretches from Jacksonville down to Fort Myers and has a population of over 13 million people. Judge Corrigan was recently awarded the William M. Hoeveler Judicial Professionalism Award, which recognizes a “judge who best exemplifies the strength of character, competence, commitment, and civility as a jurist, lawyer, and public servant.” Judge Corrigan is Vice-Chair of the Board of Daniel, Inc., which provides services to at-risk children who have been abused, neglected, or face mental health challenges.

“The Class of 2024 is thoughtful and intelligent, with their eyes fixed firmly on the future. If you want to feel better about our young people and the future of our country, spend some time with Bishop Kenny students.”
-The Honorable Timothy J. Corrigan ‘74

Judge Corrigan’s ties to Bishop Kenny run deep. There has been a Corrigan or Corrigan relative at the school since the 1960s, 25 total at last count. His niece is currently a junior, and there have been five BK weddings in his family, including his own. The Corrigans are also the proud parents of two BK graduates, Brian ‘05 and Kevin ’07, and their family is continuing the Catholic school tradition as their grandson attends Assumption.

Judge Corrigan spent time with a group of BK seniors prior to graduation, and during the school year, he hosted BK students at a naturalization ceremony in the courthouse, where the students played key roles. It was an honor to have him address the Class of 2024. He praised their many accomplishments and challenged them to not only appreciate their outstanding Catholic education but to use the academic and spiritual foundation they received at Kenny to become engaged citizens.

highest HONORS

Valedictorian – MATTHEW PHAN

Matthew graduated with an impressive grade point average of 4.59. He came to Bishop Kenny from Blessed Trinity Catholic School and achieved first honors honor roll every quarter of his high school career. He was also recognized as a National Merit Commended Student. Matthew took twelve Advanced Placement courses and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction in 2023. In addition, he is an AP Capstone Diploma recipient.

Matthew was a member of the National Honor Society and the English, Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, Science, and Spanish Honor Societies. He received college scholarships from Florida Arts for Life, the National Federation of Music Clubs, the Florida Federation of Music Clubs, and the Jacksonville Music Teachers Association. An accomplished pianist, Matthew is the principal pianist for the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra and has won awards at the local, state, and national levels and twice performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York City.

Matthew volunteered more than 200 community service hours, primarily by playing piano and serving as a lector at Blessed Trinity Sunday Mass. He also volunteers at school-wide Masses and the Back to Bach organization, an organization that promotes arts education for underprivileged students.

Matthew was accepted to the University of Florida Honors College, Florida State University Honors College, Jacksonville University Honors College, Stetson University Honors College, and Vanderbilt University. He is attending Vanderbilt University this fall and plans to major in Piano Performance and Pre-Medicine.

Salutatorian – CASSIEL CHALUJA

Cassie tied Matthew with a rank of #1 in the class and also graduated with a 4.59 GPA. Their tie was broken by calculating the final numeric grades in each course during their junior and senior years. Cassie came to Bishop Kenny from Palmer Catholic Academy and achieved first honors honor roll every quarter of her high school career. She completed thirteen Advanced Placement courses, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction in 2023, and earned the AP Capstone Diploma.

Cassie carefully balanced schoolwork with various activities. She was an essential member of the National Honor Society and was inducted into five other academic honor societies: English, Science, Spanish, Rho Kappa, and Mu Alpha Theta. Cassie was elected Student Council Senator in her junior and senior years. She enjoyed participating in the Art, Spanish, History, Science, Interact, and Theater clubs, Diversity Student Union, and Brain Brawl. Cassie is also a passionate athlete who competed with our sailing and golf teams, serving as the captain of the golf team her senior year.

Cassie volunteered more than 370 hours of community service at Grace Music Ministry, The First Act Children’s Community Theater, Vacation Bible School, Neighborhood Little Libraries, and The Sulzbacher Center & Mission House. She also earned her first-degree black belt in karate and even found time to work at Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Cassie was accepted to Northeastern University Honors College, Drexel University Honors College, Florida State University Honors College, and the University of Central Florida. She is attending Northeastern University with plans to major in Data Science & Mathematics and pursue a career as an actuary.

Our Crusader community is incredibly proud of Matthew, Cassie, and Emma. We celebrate their achievements and are confident they will continue to trailblaze in their new adventures. We wish them every blessing and continued success.
“Let

yourselves be taken over by the light of Christ, and spread that light wherever you are.”

Bishop John J. Snyder Peace in Christ Award

EMMA LAWRENCE

Emma Lawrence was selected as the Bishop John J. Snyder Peace in Christ Award recipient. This prestigious award was established in 2001 and is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates a love of God by consistently exhibiting those virtues modeled by Bishop Snyder. The recipient must be in good academic standing, possess a character reflecting humility, demonstrate a history of serving others with compassion and resolving conflicts, and be an active member of their church community.

As the Chaplain of the St. Vincent DePaul Service Club and a Campus Ministry Club board member, Emma exemplified the values of compassion and leadership. She also served as an Extraordinary Minister (EM) in her senior year, demonstrating her deep faith and commitment to her community. Emma’s dedication to service extended to her active involvement in the Assumption Youth Ministry, where she served on the leadership team. Emma helped to serve the poor and elderly in the Interlachen community through her participation in the DOSA Urban Plunge for three years. As a RISE retreat leader at BK, Emma played a crucial role in guiding her peers closer to Christ during the semiannual weekend retreats, fostering spiritual growth and community.

In addition to her commitment to service, Emma showcased a relentless pursuit of academic excellence as an honors student and a member of six honor societies, including Latin, Science, Mu Alpha Theta, English, Rho Kappa, and the National Honor Society. Beyond her scholarly achievements, Emma was a dedicated athlete, contributing to the varsity tennis team for four years.

Emma is majoring in biomedical engineering at the University of Florida this fall. Her passion for science and service positions her to make significant contributions to the healthcare field as she continues to exhibit the virtues modeled by Bishop John J. Snyder and makes a positive difference in our society through her dedication to service and faith.

-Pope. St. John Paul II

leaving a LEGACY

A white stole with the words “BKHS Legacy” indicates that a graduate has a parent or grandparent who also graduated from Bishop Kenny. In the Class of 2024, there were 55 legacy graduates. We extend a special welcome to these new members of the Crusader alumni family and congratulate them and their families for carrying on the BK tradition!

The endowed $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a senior boys’ basketball player named by a selection committee, not for his performance on the basketball court but for demonstrating kindness, humility, and the ability to make others feel special. Coach Jerry Buckley and Dominic’s parents, Byron and Gina Allmond, presented this year’s scholarship to Tong Tong ‘24.

The BK Courage & Spirit Award is presented to a student or students who have faced exceptional health or other personal challenges during their time at BK. Despite those challenges, the recipient of the $1,000 scholarship will have successfully managed a full academic schedule and participated in athletics and/or extracurricular activities. Tim Krause presented this year’s award to Julian Dewees ’24

The Presidents’ Award is presented to a senior displaying the charisms of three past Bishop Kenny presidents. Msgr. Mortimer Danaher (19561967), Msgr. Daniel Logan (1971-1989), and Msgr. Michael Houle (19892015), whose 55 years of combined leadership are the inspiration for this award, shared unique gifts in their service to BK. The recipient of this award is the student-leader who best demonstrates strength, compassion, and forgiveness in leadership. This $1,000 scholarship was established by Ken Kelly ’83 through a gift to the BK Endowment in gratitude for his experience with each of the namesake leaders. REVIEW year in

academic review 2023-24

Our 72nd year of service ushered in new and enhanced programs and significant campus improvements, continuing our tradition of excellence in Catholic education. We proudly launched a revamped Campus Ministry program and welcomed two new chaplains, Fr. Peter Dittus and Fr. Kristian Espejon, Servant Brothers of the Home of the Mother. Fr. Peter and Fr. Kristian minister to our students three days a week. With the blessing of priests on campus, we resumed offering daily Mass in our chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available three days per week during lunch periods.

Our Campus Ministry department includes five faculty members serving as lay ministers. Dr. Missy Parkison, our Campus Minister assigned to Spiritual Accompaniment, assists students with spiritual direction and mental health needs. The department successfully launched two new overnight junior and senior R.I.S.E. retreats in the fall and spring, each attended by over 100 students. Our new freshman/sophomore Quest Retreat began in the spring with 30 students attending. In February, we hosted renowned Catholic speaker Jason Evert, who presented “Lust is Boring” to all students. Following his talk, many students sought out his free books and resources. These initiatives, guided by the Holy Spirit, have fostered a deeper spirituality, stronger devotion to Jesus, and increased participation in the sacramental life of the Church among our students.

In the summer of 2023, we completely renovated eighteen classrooms, including new furniture, carpet, lighting, paint, and Promethean interactive boards. Thanks to the generous support of donors at the Big Red Ball, we installed Promethean Boards in all classrooms by April 2024, meeting our school improvement goals two years ahead of schedule. Our next focus is renovating the 200 Building. Seven classrooms were renovated this summer, and we aim to complete the remaining classrooms and lab spaces by 2026.

In response to our students’ diverse learning needs, our Learning Resource Program (LRP) has been restructured under Mrs. Jennifer Richardson’s leadership. This expanded program includes an additional school counselor to support students and partner with parents.

Our students continue to achieve remarkable academic success. Three seniors were named National Merit Finalists, ten students were honored at the Northeast Florida Regional Science & Engineering Fair, and many others were recognized for various accomplishments. A total of 376 students (27% of the student body) took at least one Advanced Placement course this year, with 83% earning scores of 3 or higher to qualify for college credit across 24 courses and 941 exams administered. Of those students, 162 were named AP scholars by the College Board, and 20 earned the AP Capstone Diploma. In March, more than 300 students were inducted into one or more of our 12 honor societies, and 155 seniors qualified for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship.

As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and look forward to a new school year, we are grateful for the legacy and tradition of excellence passed down by generations of Crusaders. We remain committed to fostering Gospel values within our students as we prepare them for college and life.

Military Appointments

We proudly congratulate Nash Beenen ’24 and Sydney Roundtree ’24 on earning military appointments. Nash is attending the United States Naval Academy, where he will play on the football team, and Sydney is attending the United States Air Force Academy, where she will play basketball. Best of luck, Crusaders; you make us proud!

NJROTC cadets selected to the Navy Flight Academy Aviation Program

Congratulations to Mary Elizabeth Harden ‘25 and Xander Lisowski ’25, two of only 28 students nationwide selected for the Navy & Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Flight Academy. This elite program was established in 2021 by the Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF), to increase exposure to naval aviation. The Navy partners with select universities in the country to provide flight training to the participating students through an intensive eight-week STEM program where cadets can earn college credit and their Private Pilot’s Licenses (PPL).

“The goal of the scholarship program is to inspire and expose exceptional young talent from communities across the nation to a career path in Naval Aviation,” Tamara Graham, Deputy Director, CNAF Flight Academy Program Manager said. “Mary Elizabeth Harden and Xander Lisowski have demonstrated exceptional potential, and the Navy is honored to play a part in their personal and professional journeys.”

Mary Elizabeth and Xander earned their PPL Wings of Gold and ranked 4th and 7th out of 28 participants.

Eagle Scouts

Five students representing four scout troops throughout the greater Jacksonville area have earned Scouting’s highest honor. Congratulations to Nick Martin ‘25, Keegan Gallup ‘24, Kolbe Sexton ‘24, Brody Cooper ‘24, and Zach Crutchfield ‘25 for this great accomplishment. One of the main pillars of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout is the planning, development, and completion of a significant service project. As part of the project, the scout must successfully lead volunteers in helping to execute the project to successful completion. This year, the young men had a wide array of projects, from building butterfly gardens, benches, and picnic tables to building rock gardens around outdoor Stations of the Cross. The largest project involved installing a 20’×8’ adaptive climbing wall for a specially designed classroom, which will be used by more than 75 elementary students.

Exchange Club of Jacksonville Female Student of the Year

Mary Clare Stinnerford ’24 was named the Exchange Club of Jacksonville Female Student of the Year. The selection was based on Mary Clare’s outstanding scholarship, leadership, community service, and character qualities. The announcement was made at the Florida District Exchange Club’s annual convention in Jacksonville. Mary Clare demonstrated an exceptional commitment to both academics and extracurricular pursuits and was awarded a $2,000 scholarship for her accomplishments.

STEM A.C.E. students

The A.C.E. Mentor Program was founded in 2006 to help high school students explore careers in architecture, construction, and engineering. BK had five seniors win scholarships totaling more than $12,000 at the 2024 awards presentation, and one BK group won best year-end presentation.

Congratulations to:

Caleb Couch ‘24: $1,000 - ACE Scholarship

Keegan Gallup ‘24: $1,500 - Baker Design Build Scholar

Isabella Hutchins ‘24: $1,500 - Haskell Scholar

David Martinez ‘24: $1,500 - Florida Healthcare Engineering Association (FHEA) Scholar

Russell Odion ‘24: $6,875 - HCA Healthcare Scholar

Freshman Grandparents Day

Bishop Kenny hosted its first Freshman Grandparents Day on April 10, 2024. This new event invites grandparents of freshmen to Mass and a reception on campus during the school day. More than 170 grandparents attended. It was a wonderful morning welcoming family on campus and a new tradition we look forward to seeing grow.

BK Step Team

The BK Step Team competed in their first competition at The Stompdown 2024, a national, sold-out step show hosted at UNF in January. The step team worked hard and took first place in the High School Co-ed Division. Congratulations, BK Step!

Catholic Days at the Capitol

Campus Ministry Coordinator Mr. Brad Winkler and a group of students traveled to Tallahassee in February to attend Catholic Days at the Capitol. They met with legislators and their constituents to express the nonpartisan public policy voice of the Catholic Church in Florida. We are proud of our students for making their faith a priority.

German Exchange Students

Every two years, BK students can enroll in the school’s Educational First International trip. In 2023, Mrs. Durbin and Mrs. Huskey took 15 students on a ten-day tour to Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The group visited Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, and saw the Swiss Alps, and many other beautiful places. They were able to experience new cultures, food, and museums.

Legacy of Faith Capital Campaign

The groundbreaking for the Betty & Jack Demetree Family Athletic Training Center on January 3, 2024, marked a significant milestone in our collective commitment to advancing the legacy of our school. This beautiful new athletic training center will be a state-of-the-art facility providing classroom space, locker rooms, athletic training areas, and more to our students. This is the first step in an exciting new chapter for Bishop Kenny. Together, as a united BK community, alongside our dedicated alumni, past parents, and supporters of Catholic education, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for generations to come.

Christus Vivit National Award Recipients

The Christus Vivit National Award recognizes young Catholics who have helped bring Christ to life in their parishes, schools, and communities. These young people live and model what it means to be a missionary disciple in the world today through Christian service and stewardship, advocacy for those in need, modeling Christian life, and serving as a light to the world.

Congratulations to the following BK students:

Thomas Cratem ‘25

Mary Elizabeth Harden ‘25

Emma Lawrence ‘24*

Julia Marquez ‘26*

Emily Rrukaj ‘25

Gator Bowl Charities Award of Excellence in Scholarship

Bridget Sutter ’24 received the Gator Bowl Charities Award of Excellence in Scholarship, a one-time gift of $2,500 for use at any accredited university or college. Students are selected based on their scholastic record, community service, sports participation, leadership, involvement in extracurricular activities, and a written essay. Bridget was a member of the 2023 state championship girls cross country team, a member of the track & field team, and maintained a 4.48 grade point average. She is attending the University of Notre Dame.

Northeast Florida Scholastic Art Awards

AP Art students Erica Charleus ’24 and Madeline O’Neill ’24 received exceptional recognition at the Northeast Florida Scholastic Art Awards. Madeline earned a gold key (first place) for her entire portfolio, a difficult honor to achieve, and Erica earned a silver key for her portfolio, as well as numerous individual awards. Madeline’s portfolio and Erica’s gold key works were also submitted to the national competition. Other awards were also won by Jace Crowell ‘25, Talley Gettemy ‘24, Brittney Miller ‘25, Melania Rosasco ‘25, Alexa Shatley ‘25, and Imogene Sutherland ‘25.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

The 2023 BKHS St. Vincent de Paul Society Thanksgiving Food Drive was tremendously successful. Led by club officers and faculty sponsor Mrs. Noreen Thurson, this annual campus-wide effort is a hallmark of the holiday service season at BK. The 2023 drive proudly provided more than 600 Thanksgiving meals to families in parishes throughout the diocese.

student ART & THEATRE

Bishop Kenny Fine Arts

Our Fine Arts program had another outstanding year, culminating with the AP Art Showcase held on May 3.

Sophia Nunez-Salinas ’25 completed AP 2D Art and Design and, along with eight other students, had her artwork displayed at the art showcase.

“The AP Art showcase is a sample of the best works of the art department,” Sophia said. The showcase is also held to inspire younger artists who may be interested in applying for an art class. “AP Art isn’t your traditional AP class, where you take tests throughout the year to prepare for the AP exam,” she explained. “We instead work on a portfolio of around ten pieces throughout the year, which we submit to the College Board in May as the exam.” The pieces submitted must all relate back to a central theme or question selected by each student. This year’s themes included a student’s experience as an introvert, plants seen through different perspectives, a look at modern and prehistoric animals, childhood and growing up.

Bishop Kenny Theatre

As part of BK’s ongoing improvements to its visual standards, BK Theatre unveiled a new look this past school year. Their new logo features St. Genesius, a 3rd century Roman actor who experienced a sudden and powerful conversion to Christianity during a performance for Emperor Diocletian. As the patron saint of actors, St. Genesius had to make a cameo in our revamped theatre logo!

For the 23-24 season, the fall production was the beloved 1990s classic, Goosebumps by R.L. Stine, which thrilled audiences with its spooky, nostalgic charm. In the spring, they took the stage with the hit musical Mamma Mia, igniting the auditorium with infectious ABBA tunes and prompting everyone to sing along. From the talented actors to the dedicated production team and crew, every detail was meticulously attended to in the three performances of each show. BK Theatre truly shined, delivering unforgettable experiences.

bishop kenny ROYALTY

Miss BK 2025: Kamea Smith ‘25

Junior Kamea Smith’s name was in the spotlight on Friday, April 19, when she won the Miss Bishop Kenny Pageant. Kamea was inspired to enter the pageant by her older sister Kalia’s performance in the 2020 pageant where she won first runner-up, Miss Sweetheart. “She inspired me to do the pageant and continue what she started,” Kamea said.

Along with her sister’s support, Kamea’s whole family encouraged her to enter the pageant to help introduce more Polynesian culture to Bishop Kenny. Kamea was born and raised in Jacksonville; her father is from Kentucky, but her mother is from Hawaii. With family living on all the different islands in Hawaii, Kamea’s family makes an effort to travel to Hawaii as much as possible. “I want people to experience real Polynesian culture - not just the stereotypical things, such as luaus, but actually get to know what is behind the culture,” Kamea said.

Kamea is an accomplished Polynesian dancer. She learned her talent from her aunt, Oh Tila, who lives in Hawaii. For Miss BK, Kamea performed poi dancing, a dance native to New Zealand’s Maori people.

All of the talented contestants gave the audience a memorable evening of talent and beauty. Congratulations to Kamea, first runner-up Siena Bakkar ’25, and second runner-up Daniella Mosqueda ’25.

Kamea will represent BK in the Miss Senior High pageant and is planning on performing her same talent.

Fourteen yearbook staff members photographed, interviewed, designed, and published the 2024 Crusader. Bishop Kenny’s yearbook remains one of the largest in the country, with 472 bound pages and 20 pages for the additional spring supplement. These dedicated students worked countless hours, and their dedication shows with each turn of the page.

The staff worked in teams to report on events throughout the school year. They arrived early and stayed late to ensure they gave their best to the school. Additionally, members attended conventions in Gainesville, Boston, and New York to enhance their skills and learn new journalism trends.

“Go In Peace”, page 103, highlights the heart of BKHS. The school-wide Mass is the focal point of this spread, with Father Peter kneeling before the Eucharist in the photo taken by Kallie Kreuter ‘25.

Also featured are sporting events from the week of December 4-8, 2023, including boys soccer and basketball games. These wonderful pages do not happen by chance, but through hard work and attention to details.

The yearbook staff is ready for the 2025 Crusader and looks forward to sharing the next volume in May.

faculty SPOTLIGHT

Michael Broach, Vice President & Director of Mission Integration, is also an alumnus of the Class of 1999. He shares his experiences in his many roles as a Crusader: student, administrator, and parent.

What sports, clubs, or other activities did you participate in during high school?

I am a four-year graduate of the NJROTC program. I’m not sure I would be in the position I am today without that program. In NJROTC, I learned leadership skills, organizational skills, and selfdiscipline. The instructors at the time, Commander Gene Isert and Chief Cary Williams, were great mentors for me as a young man.

I was also a member of the Future Teachers Club, sponsored by Mrs. Laura Yocum. My favorite activity of that club was the opportunity to participate in student teaching at Assumption.

It was also during my time at BK that I started assisting, then eventually teaching, fourth grade religious education (PREP) at St. Joseph. I continued this through college and up until I started teaching at Kenny. There’s even a picture of me teaching 4th grade PREP in my BK uniform in the ‘98 yearbook.

When you were a student at Bishop Kenny, did you ever think you would return to the school and work in academia?

Yes - being a teacher was always a job I considered as a kid. However, what sealed it for me was World History in my sophomore year. I never really enjoyed learning history until I had Mr. David Opdycke. His teaching and passion for history convinced me that I wanted to pursue a career teaching history.

The week of BK graduation, the academic dean at the time, Mrs. Deborah Coffey, told me, “I’ll see you back in four years for a job.” I was back in less than four years as a substitute teacher and landed my dream job of teaching U.S. History in 2004. Ironically, my first job in administration was as Academic Dean in 2016.

When Mr. Orlando first asked me to join the administration in 2016, my only request was that I would still be able to teach. I’ve continued to teach 1-2 classes each year, and in 2019, I traded teaching history for teaching AP Seminar in our Capstone program. Escaping the office to teach our kids, even if for one class period, is the best part of my day!

What has changed most significantly since you were a student?

The most significant change has been the integration of technology in the classroom. When I left in 1999, the last typewriter lab in the 200 Building had just transitioned to Windows 98-based computers, yet there were no computers in the classrooms. Grades were calculated by hand in teachers’ red grade books, and the only instructional technology on campus was overhead projectors.

In the 22 years that I’ve worked at BK, 20 years full-time as faculty, it has been amazing to see how BK has led the way with instructional technology - first with empowering teachers with the technology tools to be successful in today’s learning environment, then launching the iPad initiative in 2013. Today, BK continues to foster creativity and innovation by teaching with technology, offering a wide variety of diverse and new course offerings, and many extra-curricular opportunities to prepare students for an ever-changing world.

I have very much enjoyed helping to lead that change with our classroom renovations project, which started in 2021 with the 100 Building and now continues in the 200 Building, our original school building that is from 1952. This project is ensuring every classroom on campus has the most up-to-date technology for students and teachers.

What remains that you hope will never change?

First and foremost, our culture of faith. When I’m asked what sets us apart from other collegeprep schools in the area, my answer is always that the true presence of Jesus Christ is here on this campus, and His presence shapes all that we do. In my role as Director of Mission Integration, I am excited to work closely with our Campus Ministry team and Religion Department, and it has been most affirming to see the increase in spirituality of our students while at BK.

Second, BK has always been and will always be a family. Our 29 alumni, faculty, and staff bear witness to the family atmosphere on Kingman Avenue. Our legacy students and alumni ensure we are accountable for preserving our traditions and remaining committed to our mission of Catholic education.

Can you share a little bit about your family life?

My wife, Amanda, and I met at St. Joseph Church in 2001, where we are still very active parishioners. We were both full-time college students, and she was home from UCF for Christmas. We met in the church choir, a ministry that continues to be a part of our family. We were married in 2006, and the Music Director was the best man at our wedding! We are looking forward to our trip to Rome and the Vatican next summer with the St. Joseph Church choir.

Do you have any future Crusaders to add to your Bishop Kenny legacy?

My son, Charles, is a current sophomore in the Class of 2027 and loves BK. He spent several summers volunteering with the maintenance team here and now is a summer employee assisting the Facilities Department with all the summer repairs and classroom renovations. He is active in several clubs, most notably St. Vincent de Paul and Interact, and competed on the weightlifting team this past year.

My daughter, Ellie, is a 7th grader at St. Joseph School and looks forward to joining the BK Class of 2030 in a couple of years. She is very excited about high school, especially the fine arts program.

BK has been an integral part of my life for almost thirty years. It’s family, and I feel fortunate that my children get to be a part of that too.

Class of 2024

For Zander Sellers, Senior Class President for BK’s 2024 graduating class, the sense of family, service, and rigor most embody his high school experience—features he anticipates will play a starring role in the future for him and his fellow graduates.

Recalling this year’s graduation ceremony as the culmination of a great movie that marks both the ending of one story and the beginning of another, Zander, who was active in the BK Forensics Club (Speech & Debate), Environmental Club, and a member of the sailing team, describes graduation day as his most memorable. “Walking out from the UNF Arena was a moment of joy and upbeat sensation,” said Zanders. “Everyone from the class together at the end of a four-year episode … talking with each other, smiling, hugging, taking pictures with each other; that felt like the end of a movie.”

For Zander, scenes from that movie included lecturing and altar serving on campus, improving cafeteria traffic, and working to donate life-saving AED equipment. However, the supportive atmosphere at BK played the starring role. “You knew everyone; there was no being lonely as long as you went out and talked to people,” explained Zanders. “From a simple conversation, you find commonalities with people, and bonds form that strengthen any friendship beyond a typical acquaintanceship. I appreciate faculty members that greet you in the morning and the friends that either butt heads with you or laugh the day away.”

Zander plans to major in computer engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, but ultimately, he hopes Kenny’s commitment to faith is the legacy he and the 2024 graduating class take with them into whatever sequels their upcoming paths lead them. “When you choose to serve the Lord,” said Zanders, “deep humility forms in your soul. The true definition of service is impressed on you - to give yourself up to the common good – and it can carry on in all the work you do.” Best of luck at Georgia Tech, Zander, we are excited to see where life takes you!

faculty retirements & AWARDS

Congratulations to the BK faculty and staff who retired in 2024!

Noreen Thurson

19 years (Religion Department)

Pam Johnson 10 years (Housekeeping Staff)

John Murphy 6 years (Mathematics Department)

As the 2024 school year came to a close, we bid a heartfelt farewell to three members of our BK community who have chosen to embrace the gift of retirement. Pam Johnson, a dedicated member of our housekeeping staff for ten years; her commitment, faith, and kindness are her legacy. John Murphy, who taught in our Department of Mathematics for six years; he served the school and students faithfully, teaching subjects that are often intimidating for high school students; and Noreen Thurson, who served our Department of Religion for 19 years. She served as a dedicated catechist in the diocese since 1992 and considers the BK community to be extended family. Having also taught at Resurrection Catholic School prior to BK, she was always delighted when her former first graders appeared in her freshman religion classes. Mrs. Thurson was also a dedicated leader of the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, leading students to share their blessings during the holiday season. She was so grateful to teach where she could proclaim the name of Jesus. Each has left an indelible mark on our school, shaping the lives of countless students and staff members with their unwavering commitment to education, faith, and service, and as retirement farewells always go, they will be greatly missed.

Retirement marks the beginning of a new chapter, a time to enjoy the fruits of a life well-lived. As we celebrate their remarkable careers, we are reminded of Pope Francis’s words: “Retirement is not a time to stop living but a time to enjoy life in its fullness.” We congratulate Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Murphy, and Mrs. Thurson on jobs well done and thank them for their years of dedication. May their retirement be filled with the same joy and fulfillment they brought to our school community.

Fr. Kristian Espejon, SHM

We congratulate Fr. Kristian on his ordination to the priesthood this summer. He will be staying in Spain with the Servant Brothers of the Home of the Mother, but we are grateful for his contributions to BK Campus Ministry in his year with us. Here are some words for the BK community from Fr. Kristian:

Recently, four of our Servant Brothers, including myself, received the sacrament of Holy Orders in the Cathedral of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Br. Luis Escandell and Br. Ben Gurries were ordained to the diaconate (with Br. Ben Gurries coming to serve as a deacon at BK), while Br. Andrés Saltos and I were ordained to the priesthood. It was truly a day of grace, both for the Church and for our community, the Servant Brothers of the Home of the Mother.

One of the things that impressed me most about the ordinations was God’s great mercy towards us. When I saw how Br. Andrés had obtained the grace of the priesthood, especially with the gestures of the imposition of hands, I could only think of how good God is to us. He, who is all-powerful, has chosen poor men so that He can exalt His glory and mercy in us, making the Church fruitful in its redemptive mission. His Excellency Antonio Prieto, Bishop of Alcalá, who presided over the ceremony, addressed several topics in the homily that highlighted the characteristics one must have to be a good servant. He must be faithful, chaste, dedicated, and zealous in winning young people for Christ. He mentioned a phrase from St. John Vianney, who once remarked that if we truly knew the dignity of the priest, we would die, not out of fear, but out of love. Priests can perform their duties only because of Christ working through them. That’s why we say that the Catholic priest functions in persona Christi or “in the person of Christ.

Monday, July 1, we celebrated our first Mass. At the end, the Spanish have a tradition of kissing the hands of the newly ordained priest. This tradition symbolizes kissing the hands of Jesus himself, incarnated in his beloved priests. The whole of Heaven is celebrating these great events, but above all, Our Lady, Our Mother, who I am sure would ask us right now to pray intensely for her dear children so that they may have the strength to persevere to the end.

I would like to thank the Bishop Kenny community for giving me the opportunity to serve as a deacon in the school. It has been a very fruitful ministry, from the conversations I had with the students in the lunchroom, to attending their sports events, and participating in the school retreats. I am so thankful to have witnessed the spiritual growth of both the faculty and students at BK. You will always be in my prayers and in the sacrifice of the Mass. I will truly miss BK. I hope to come back to visit and, if God wills it, to serve as a priest. Keep up your joyful spirit, Crusaders; it brings life to the campus ministry office.

alumni NOTES

alumni ENGAGEMENT

Dear Crusader Alumni Family,

I had the pleasure of connecting with many of you on campus in the 2023-24 school year. From the annual homecoming tailgate and an exciting building groundbreaking, to football, softball, and cross country reunions held on campus, your involvement and support made these events successful and memorable.

Across our community and beyond Kingman Avenue, I am thankful for the opportunity to witness the successes of our alumni and I appreciate the monthly opportunity to share with you exciting developments taking place at Bishop Kenny. Most of all, I delight in the rich fabric of our community that we continue to weave together as new generations pass through our school and enter the alumni family.

This year, I was thrilled to see so many alumni get back in touch with the school by updating their contact information. With more than 17,000 alumni spread throughout the world, keeping up with our records can be a challenge. I encourage all of you to join us each month in the alumni newsletter to get “class notes” about fellow alumni, BK news, reunion details, and upcoming events on and off campus. The alumni newsletter is where we celebrate milestones, reminisce about BK, reconnect with old friends, and stay informed about the school. Your involvement in BK is invaluable, and I am here to support you however I can. Please reach out if you have any questions or suggestions or if there is anything you would like to share with our alumni community.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication. Together, let us continue to celebrate our shared experiences and create lasting memories.

Go Crusaders,

A Night to Remember

The 2024 Big Red Ball was a wonderful evening. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors, guests, and volunteers, including our amazing committee, for your support in making this event such a success. With more than 380 attendees, the evening was a vibrant testament to the community spirit and unwavering support for Bishop Kenny’s mission of excellence in Catholic education.

Held at the Glass Factory on February 10, guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, dancing, and a spirited live auction. Old friends had a chance to reconnect, and new friendships were made, all within the supportive embrace of the BK community.

A special note of gratitude goes to Brian Sexton P ’19, P ’23, P ’24, whose expertise and enthusiasm made the live auction a resounding success. Thanks to the generosity and participation of everyone involved, we raised more than $110,000. These funds are pivotal in bringing stateof-the-art technology and innovative node desks into our classrooms, enhancing the educational experience for all our students.

Thank you once again for your unwavering support and for significantly impacting our students’ lives. Together, we continue to uphold Bishop Kenny’s tradition of excellence.

Be sure to save the date for the 2025 Big Red Denim & Diamonds event on February 1, 2025, which will also be held at the Glass Factory.

Kara Leonard ‘90

Kara Citrano Leonard ’90 was part of the team that brought home Bishop Kenny’s first-ever girls’ basketball state championship. More than 30 years later, she’s gone from making the shots to calling them as the new Global Head of Human Resources for Johnson & Johnson Vision.

Over 23 years at Johnson & Johnson, Kara has advanced through various roles within the company, using her proven leadership skills to go from being a champion on the court to globally championing employees by focusing on employee development, talent attraction, and diversity and inclusion. In her new role, she leads the global HR strategy for Vision and joins the Vision Leadership Team and MedTech Global HR Leadership Team.

Going from driving the ball to building critical capabilities to drive growth felt like a natural extension of what Kara learned as a Lady Crusader. “Discipline, teamwork, collaboration, leadership skills, goal setting, and achievement are all highly transferable skills beneficial to any careerhelping you navigate professional challenges and continuously strive for personal and professional growth,” said Kara. “What I learned under the leadership of Coach Orlando (now Principal Orlando) and my years at BK playing a team sport has been the foundation for who I am as a leader and has been applicable in many areas of my life.”

Kara’s dedication to service and generosity is a further testament to her character. In addition to her role on the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, she is an active member of the Bishop Kenny Ambassador Council, Big Red and Capital Campaign Committees, and served as the Co-Chair of the Ambassador Council from 2021-2023. “Bishop Kenny helped shape who I am today,” said Kara. “Part of what it taught me is the importance of giving back.”

One of the most rewarding ways she’s been able to do that is through her family involvement at BK. Whether through her husband Eddie’s ’84, a former BK baseball player, active contributions to the BK baseball and football teams, or her role as team mom of the football team for three years, giving back is a part of the Leonard family’s sports legacy. Following in their parents’ footsteps, Kara and Eddie’s sons, Cal, ’22, and Michael, ’23, made their own impressive contributions to Bishop Kenny’s athletic programs. Cal now plays baseball for UNF, while Michael is on the football team at Davidson College.

Recognizing that their Catholic faith is the playbook guiding life and family, Kara also volunteers for the Diocese of St. Augustine. “I’m grateful for this faith,” she said, “so much of which Bishop Kenny played a pivotal role in developing for me and my children.” Bishop Kenny is proud of Kara’s success and of having her as an active member of our school community. We wish her and her family continued blessings.

alumni SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Byron Moran ‘03

For Dr. Byron Moran ’03, it wasn’t academics that got him out of bed in the morning to attend classes at Bishop Kenny, it was his love of sports. Decades later, sports have become a central part of his career as Medical Director for the Sports Medicine Division at the University of South Florida and the head team physician for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2021 Super Bowl Champions during Byron’s first year with the team.

“My mom found this letter from when I was a kid where I wrote I either wanted to play in the NBA or be a doctor,” said Byron. “Sports was what I cared most about, so I guess it makes sense that I gravitated back towards it and found a career that spans both sports and medicine.” After Bishop Kenny, Byron attended the University of Florida for undergrad and the University of South Florida for medical school. In addition to his work with sports teams, he has a special affinity for concussion medicine and has spent several years building the USF Concussion Center. This facility has specialists, including Byron, who manage concussion injuries, as well as specialize in prevention, education, and research.

Byron, who was a member of Bishop Kenny’s basketball and track teams, has a deep appreciation for what it means to be a part of a team, something that he says is as meaningful and relevant today in his various roles in academia, overseeing the campus concussion center, working with student-athletes, and being a part of an NFL team. “There was nothing as exciting as being a part of a team because that was always my favorite place – being with the team,” explained Byron. “I guess I’m always looking for that – in all aspects of things.”

Byron’s two children, ages six and ten, are also big sports fans, so when Jerry Buckley, Bishop Kenny’s Director of School Counseling and Byron’s old basketball coach, gave them a tour of campus, it was running around the BK baseball field that they loved most. “Coach Buckley and I have kept in touch. He’s been a good friend and mentor over the years,” said Byron, who remembers his years at Kenny positively. “For me, it was a place of growing up and getting a feel for different types of relationships and people I would go on to encounter throughout life. A lot of my memories are the friendships I made. I try to stay connected to that.” Congratulations on your success, Byron, and Go Bucs … unless they’re playing our neighbors across the river!

in MEMORIAM

September 6, 1979 – April 13, 2024

More than 50 firetrucks and ambulances gathered at the Prime Osborne Convention Center, where hundreds of Jacksonville firefighters and police officers in full dress uniform lined up to pay respects to local hero and Bishop Kenny alumnus Heath O’Shea ’98, who passed away April 13, 2024.

Following the service, a procession of firetrucks and ambulances was escorted by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to Oaklawn Cemetery for the graveside memorial. Heath’s service was attended by family, friends, and many fellow Bishop Kenny alumni, a lot of whom also serve the Jacksonville community as first responders. The full honor service, marked by two ladder trucks on both sides of Hendricks Avenue and an American flag hanging between them, JFRD Pipes & Drums (a Highland Bagpipe Band), and a 21-gun salute, reflected the honor and love felt for Heath.

Helping others is what drew Heath to his profession serving the Jacksonville community for 20 years at the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. “He loved his job, often calling it the best job ever,” explained Joe MacDonald ‘98, Heath’s stepbrother and fellow classmate at Bishop Kenny. “He liked to make people laugh. Making others feel good and helping others made him happy.”

Heath enjoyed his time at BK. “We loved working on our cars, building stereo systems for them, and then getting in trouble with Dean Williams for playing our music too loud before school,” said Joe. “We had a close group of friends that he kept in contact with, and he was heavily involved with planning our last class reunion.” It was also through Bishop Kenny that Heath met his beloved wife of 15 years, Melanie ’01 (Jones) who Joe described as, “the love of Heath’s life and best friend.” Family, including the couple’s two children, Simon and Lily, were everything to Heath.

Heath’s legacy to service, laughter, and love of family and friends, is one that will be cherished by Joe and so many others in the BK community. “If he could help you with something, he would, no questions asked,” said Joe. “If you called him, he’d pick up every single time. That’s just the person he was, and we all loved him for that.”

Please join us in prayer for Heath and all Bishop Kenny alumni and friends of the school who passed away in the past year.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
