Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Manogue, We are back and better than ever! Coming off of a very challenging year of navigating COVID and the closures, changes, and restrictions that went along with it, our students and staff returned with positive attitudes and the willingness to dive right back in. Our alumni, supporters, and friends also brought a special light of encouragement to help Bishop Manogue move forward, and for that, we are forever grateful. There is no doubt that we are making up for lost time as the start of this school year has been busier than ever with many great changes and successes. One of those accomplishments is Bishop Manogue being debt-free in 2022, thanks in big part to our supporters (see the financial breakdown). Our enrollment is set to hit historic levels as we look forward to welcoming Bishop Manogue’s largest freshman class this fall. I attribute this success to our outstanding faculty and staff who go above and beyond to make a genuine difference in the lives of our fantastic students. They truly are unmatched in the way they serve our school community. We also said a bittersweet goodbye to Bishop Calvo who served our school and Diocese for the last 15 years; at the same time, we happily welcomed the new Bishop, Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg. If we have learned anything from the past two years, it is that change is inevitable. However, it’s how we handle those changes that define our character. Pope Benedict XVI once said, “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.” I truly believe our Bishop Manogue community of students, parents, friends, alumni, and supporters embraces that quote by coming together in greatness and love during this time of constant change. As always, I appreciate your ongoing support of Bishop Manogue as we continue on this path of great opportunity. We look forward to sharing our progress with you and as always, ask for your prayers.
I am grateful for the “justs.” Each year that goes by our community grows for me, and there are more people I can celebrate the “justs” with. It is amazing to have 20 years’ worth of students, parents, and friends with whom we can share stories and celebrate our Bishop Manogue family. In that time, we have been blessed to know thousands of kids. And by extension, we have received the gift of their parents, grandparents, and now, for many, their own children. It is a little stagger ing to think we are now teaching the children of the children we taught. It is a humbling honor. As we charge into 2022 (I am charging…I will appreciate the “justs” of 2021 after a little distance), I ask any of you who have been a part of our 20-year history here to reach out and share your stories - we remem ber you and we want to know what you are doing, where you have been, and how you are doing. Each of your adventures is a celebration for us, a trip down memory lane, and a source of pride for us. It doesn’t matter how big or small, we love it. Let’s start 2022 with a celebration of Miners. Now and Then 2022…yikes. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited you are here (and if you don’t live up to the promise to be better than 2020 and 2021 we are going to have words)...but I can’t quite believe that 20 years ago is in the 2000s and not 1980s. When I think about time, I feel like everything is, or was, “just.” Wasn’t it just Y2K? I was just in college…20 years ago. I just started teaching…20 years ago. I just got married… in 2002. My kids are young…my oldest just started high school (yeah…all of you 2006 graduates…that’s the kid I was pregnant with when you graduated…join the “just” club). Just, just, just, and 20 years later, here Matt, Jason, and I are (and Mrs. Wieland, she isn’t ever allowed to leave) looking toward the next 20 years of “justs.”

A s a native Nevadan and Renoite, Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell ‘97 holds a special love for the Reno com munity and gives back wherever possible. Whether she is working to keep our community members healthy through her profession and volunteering, or spending time with her husband and two daughters, Dr. BCW is always on the go. A highly respected physician in the Reno area, Dr. BCW has been featured and interviewed on a number of national television net works and publications regarding the COVID pandemic and how it’s affecting northern Nevada resi dents. These networks and pub lications include CBS news, BNC, CNN, Cheddar, Newsy, HuffPost, CNN Health line, and now she is a monthly contributor for NV Inde pendent. Miner Messenger: You've been deep-rooted in the Northern Nevada community for a signifi cant amount of time; briefly tell us about your journey and what this community means to you.
Dr. Bayo Curry-Winchell: I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, and attended Our Lady of the Snows, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School (1997), and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno (2002). I had an interest in pursuing a medical degree and I decided to earn a master’s degree in physician assis tant (PA) studies. I worked for three years as a PA in primary and urgent care. Although I enjoyed working as a PA, I wanted to learn more. There fore, I decided to become a physi cian. I completed my medical degree in 2012 and my family medicine residency locally at the University of Nevada, Reno. Upon completion of my medical degree, I was hired by Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center and held the title of Medical Director for Urgent Care. I’m also the Medical Director for the Sexual Assault Class of ‘97

MM: What do you do for fun? Dr. BCW: Listen to music, dance, and play board games with my kids.
MM: The past two years have forced all of us to pivot, rethink, and reimagine. Can you share with us a few ways you had to adapt last year, both personally and professionally?
MM: Where do you find inspiration? Dr. BCW: My family, friends, and co-workers. My husband provides amazing stability in my world that tends to be quite busy. My two girls Jordan (7) and Jaylin (5) and my parents remind me to enjoy the little moments in life. Lastly, my coworkers - I feel fortunate to work with the people I do every day.
MM: How did you decide to enter the world of healthcare and medicine? Any pointers for individuals curious about the field? Dr. BCW: I have always enjoyed helping people and desired to make an impact in healthcare in my com munity. I love my job, it’s an honor to try and help people every day. [My suggestion for other people interested in healthcare is to] talk to as many people as you can who work in different fields of medicine, and then take the time to shadow in their respective fields. The time spent will allow you to make an informed decision if the field of medicine is for you.
Dr. BCW: This year has allowed me to grow personally and professionally in all aspects of my life. I have always respected teachers however last year while attempting to homeschool my girls I had an even bigger appreciation for all that they do. The increased work demands have allowed me to cherish my days off even more with my family. Lastly, I have a deeper relationship with my co-workers and colleagues in the community due to the amazing response to combat COVID.

Response Team and a volunteer medical examiner for the child abuse program under the Child Advoca cy Center. I have a passion for our community, and I hope the work and volunteerism I participate in gives back to the community I love.
Faculty and staff tuned in to the 2021 Diocese Confer ence from home! It is Bishop Manogue’s mission to educate students through faith, leadership, knowledge, and compassion. This conference is always so beneficial in empowering that work.

As a result of the school’s commitment to expanding young women’s access to AP Computer Science Prin ciples, the College Board named Bishop Manogue recipient of the 2020 Female Diversity Award. BMCHS had the immense honor of being selected to participate in a virtual school showcase with the U.S. Department of Education and Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, Frank Brogan. Members of the school community shared best prac tices, provided unique perspectives, and discussed the future of education.

The Campus Ministry program at BMCHS was a fantastic way for students to con nect and support one another during a couple of challenging years. Their sense of community and service, especially in the last year, was deeply heartwarming. Bishop Manogue had a successful shift into virtual and hybrid learning due to the resilience of faculty, staff, students, and Miner families! Teachers like Mrs. Brouhard continued to make class engaging and fun throughout the school year. Her students got to hear from guest speaker Gina Gilbert-Green during their Community Health class. Students and staff enjoyed dressing up and celebrating Catholic Schools Week 2021!

The girls golf and volleyball teams earned NIAA Regional Championship wins! Go Miners! Retreats were held on campus for the first time ever! Stu dents enjoyed planning creative and fun activities around the school where they could connect socially and spiritually with one another. T he 2021 Bishop Manogue Catholic High School Commencement Ceremony took place on June 3, 2021, on the beautiful Bishop Manogue campus. The graduating class had a 100 percent graduation rate with 97 percent of those students going on to attend a 4-year institu tion and 3 percent attending two-year institutions. The average GPA for the graduating class was 3.83 and more than $12 million dollars was offered in scholarships to graduating seniors.

In January of 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, Tom Kessenich was born. Like many families during this time, the Kessenich family often moved due to the need for work. Tom’s father, who worked for the South ern Pacific railroad company, finally made his way out west where he would settle his family in rural Nevada.
The Kessenich family called Carlin, Nevada home. Living and going to school there, Tom in his freshman year, played on the Carlin Combined High School’s 6-man football team in 1947. However, Tom’s father, who saw great potential in his son, wanted Tom to play on an 11-man football team, so the search Afterbegan.obtaining a brochure on the announcement of the opening of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School and many family discussions, it was decided that Tom would enroll at Bishop

The definition of spirit has different meanings depending on the context in which it is used. Spirit can be defined as “an animating force of a being or entity.” Entity can be defined as “something with a distinct and independent existence.” For example, a high school football team is an entity as is the high school. A football team is com posed of players, coaches, and support staff – These are the beings who drive the entity on the fields of competition and, quite frankly, bring it to life - aka spirit. The spirit of a football team is the animating force that drives its march to continual success. The spirit of a high school is no different. It is the animat ing force of its student body, teachers, administrators, and staff.

Birth of Bishop Manogue’s Spirit
Tom fondly remembers, “The student body took on the challenge of devel oping cheers, fight songs, and getting the student newspaper named and running. They wanted success. When the discussion was held on what to name the school paper, someone said, ‘Don’t worry about it. It is only a minor detail.’ From that moment the school newspaper was named. It became the Miner Detail. You have to give them credit. They had the spirit to take it on. It is tough to walk into a guest ranch and call it a high school. As you walked through the front door of the school there was a fireplace in the middle of the room. You just did not get the school atmosphere. However, I believe that helped us, because we were going to make it a school. All those kids took it to heart and bent over backward to make it work. The kids built a foundation.”
In late summer of 1948, Tom and his father boarded the westbound Southern Pacific passenger train in Carlin with Reno as their destination. Upon their arrival in Reno, Tom was enrolled at Bishop Manogue that same day and said goodbye to his father who would return to his family in Carlin. On September 13, 1948, Tom was among the first students who walked through the doors of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School at Flick Ranch, the only Catholic high school in Nevada at that time.

Tom’s favorite teacher, Sister Alexis, pushed him to be as good in the classroom as he was on the football field, and for that, she held a special place in his heart. Tom would graduate from Bishop Manogue in 1951, after playing three seasons as the quarterback for legendary head football coach, Duke Drakulich. Not only was Drakulich a remarkable coach, but his accom plishments during his coaching career also included the invention of football equipment that’s still used today. In 1954, Drakulich’s team was the first football team fully outfitted with facemasks. Playing Football for the Miners Tom remembers Coach Drakulich as “one of the nicest men I had ever met. He coached in a different way. I still don’t remember him ever yelling at a player. If a player did something wrong, he would call him over and tell him how he should have run the play instead. In those days, it wasn’t so much about winning as it was about learning the plays. When Duke talked, you listened, and when you listened you learned. One of his best qualities was how he communicated with his players. Throughout my life I have tried to follow his example when communicating with other people.” Tom fondly remembers Coach Drakulich bringing his dog to practice and said, “the dog would even run plays with us.”
The first game of the 1949 season was against the Fallon Greenwave where the Miner football team would, for the first time, wear their used uniforms which were donated from the University of San Francisco’s football team. Those green and gold uniforms would be the determining factor of Bishop Manogue’s official school colors. The Big Game Heading into Tom’s final season as a Miner football player, the 1950 season brought a lifetime memory of a season hard fought and well played. The second game on the
Tom went on to say, “The priests and nuns made sure you lived your Manogue life, your faith life. They corrected you when you were wrong about life. I really appreciated what they did.” The nuns were from the Dominicans of San Rafael Order.
It was that Miner spirit that kept Tom optimistic and fighting on for a school that consisted of a student body of about 60 and, according to Tom, most of the students were girls. The stu dents were very proud of their quaint campus and were determined to put their imprint on it, which they did.
The 11-man football team got off to a bit of a rocky start during the 1948 season. Being a non-conference team the Miners were only able to scrim mage the other two local schools, Reno High and Sparks High. It was the Reno scrimmage Tom remem bers being the toughest. He said he overheard someone say, “If that had been a game, Reno could have beaten Manogue 60-0.” However, Manogue fought on and went into the 1949 season ready to fight and play in scheduled league games.
The following day, the Nevada Cath olic Register (the Diocese of Reno newspaper) reported Coach Draku lich’s tribute to his football team from the day prior. “You can measure the height and weight of a young man. You can time his speed and measure the distance of his passes and punts. But you can’t measure his heart. That has to be proven on the football field, and these young men have proved that they have strong hearts in their great play today. It took heart for that small squad to outplay Reno the way they did. Ted Hicks, Tom Kessenich, and Otto Schulz all got out of sickbeds the day before that game, and Hicks never came off the field for a rest. The other two got very little rest. The only way a squad of 19 could match a squad of 47 is by the one element you can’t measure, heart. That is how we tied Reno today.”
The assumption proved to be true during the first half of the game with Serra leading the Miners 14-0. Tom re members, “as we walked off the field to head to the locker room at halftime, one of their players came up to me and said, ‘I’m sorry. They told us you are one of the better Catholic high schools for football,’ and he walked away.” That comment filled the Miners with a resolve. The Miners held the Padres scoreless in the second half and, in the last five minutes of the game, scored three touchdowns. The final score that November afternoon was 21-14 with a Miners victory. Two of the touchdowns were scored by Tom and Julio Chavez scored the other. Tom remembers it as one of the most memorable games he had ever played. “The game was played in a rainstorm. There’s actually a picture

schedule was the Reno High Huskies who were the reigning State Champi ons for two consecutive years. As the game approached, Tom remembers getting ahold of Reno’s school paper where it highlighted the upcoming game at Flick Ranch. The paper went on to say, “it won’t be much of a game, but go support your Huskies.”

The final game of the 1950 season, and Tom’s last game in the Miners’ green and gold, was played on the famous and beloved cow pasture at Flick Ranch against Junipero Serra High School from San Mateo, Calif. The Padres’ quarterback, Del Santo was All-State and the whole squad thought they were better than Manogue (according to Tom).
Tom said, “Our game against Reno was a great moral victory for the Miners because we tied the defending State Champions who outnumbered us by more than 2 to 1. He went on to say, “All of us football players fought hard in that game. We also remembered how strongly our fellow students backed us. For me, the 1950 Reno (versus Manogue) game gave birth to the true spirit of Bishop Manogue’s student body. It was the game that gave Bishop Manogue its spirit, on and off the field.”

The “Big Game” was set for an October day and brought an estimat ed 2,000 spectators to the Flick Ranch cow pasture, which at the time had a white picket fence surrounding it and was only able to seat about 200 people in the bleachers. The Miners had 19 players suited up to play com pared to Reno High’s 47 players. This meant, the Manogue football players would have to play both offense and defense and would be at a great disadvantage to Reno’s two-platoon system, which allowed for unlimited substitutions. The Miners held the Huskies to a 7-0 lead until the third quarter when Reno scored a touch down, but would then miss the extra point. However, Manogue was called offsides (a controversial call to this day, more than seventy years later) offering up an opportunity to rekick. Reno’s second extra point attempt was good, tying up the game 7-7 where the final score would land.
He also reminisced about old team mates, many of whom have since passed away with the only four living players being Tom, Phil Hannifin, Otto Shulz, and Buddy Luchetti. Tom said, “Every time we stepped on the field we were underdogs because we were so small in stature and personnel.”

On that spring day and following the interview, Tom spoke to Coach Howren’s football players who were practicing for their upcoming playoff game in the Covid-19-impacted and delayed 2020 season. Tom said, “I know you have a big game this Friday. If I was going to tell you anything of value, just remember what got you to this point and apply it in your game. You are winners. You are learning. You have good coaches, a good facility, and you are very fortunate to be at Manogue. You’ve got it in you. You know what to do. Don’t let anyone take that away from you. I’m sure the students and faculty of this school are all very proud of you. I wish you luck. Just do what you have been taught to do.”
The True Miner Spirit…In the Words of Tom Kessenich Tom truly believes it was the start of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, its teachers, students, and athletes who help define true Miner spirit. Their love and dedication to the school gave it the strong foundation for what it has become today. The accomplishments of the student body and athletes set the stage. Tom said, “A lot of teams from various schools defeated Manogue over the years in various sports. However, never in those losses did they defeat the bond that the Manogue student body and Manogue athletes had with one another; and that, to this day is the SPIRIT OF MANOGUE!”
A Walk Down Memory Lane In April of 2021, nearly 70 years after Tom graduated from Bishop Manogue, he made his way back onto the Miner football field. Traveling from his home in Colorado, Tom took the Amtrak to Nevada, and while on his journey he once again rode the rails between Carlin and Reno. During his visit at Bishop Manogue Tom met with the Miner’s current head coach, Ernie Howren, and the 2020 football team. Coach Howren happily em braced and took advantage of the historic opportunity to connect his athletes with an iconic figure in Miner football. Tom shared stories of his old teammates and his time attending Bishop Manogue. An interview conducted by Nevada Sports Net highlighted Tom’s foot ball career at Bishop Manogue. The interview brought together alum JB Benna (‘97), Miners football alumni Ray Hagar (‘71) and Des Powers (‘71), and Vic Drackulich, son of Coach Duke Drakulich. During Tom’s visit with the football team and interview with Nevada Sports Net, he shared stories of his 11-man football team where they had just four players on the bench and played on a field that was nothing more than a cow pasture. In fact, it would be generous, in the context of how the word is used today, to refer to the cow pasture where the football team practiced and played; not to mention the “facilities,” which was the cellar in the old Flick Ranch House where the players changed, showered (with just one shower), and stored their football equipment. Basic and functional, more appropriately describes the conditions. Tom said, “It was pretty sparse. We practiced on the grass area in front of the Flick Ranch House. I still have the scar from being tackled at practice and landing on a sprinkler head. It tore me up a little bit, but I got up and got ready for the next play.”
On Friday, September 24 the Diocese of Reno and BMCHS welcomed Daniel Mueggenborg as the eighth Bishop of Reno. The installation of Bishop Mueggenborg, held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, was a significant event for the Diocese with more than a thousand people in attendance for the installation Mass, including Bishops, Archbishops, and Cardinals from throughout the United States.
Thank you, Bishop Calvo! After serving BMCHS and the Diocese of Reno for years, Bishop Ran dolph Calvo retired as the steward of Bishop Manogue. He has seen Bishop Manogue through great successes and some serious challenges. BMCHS has been truly blessed by his support and his value of Catho lic education at Bishop Manogue. One of Bishop Calvo’s points of emphasis for the BMCHS community was ensuring accessibility to the broadest range of families, regardless of their economic status. He has been a staunch supporter of financial aid, and to honor his commitment, the Board of Directors has established The Bishop Randolph Calvo Scholarship. THE DIOCESE OF RENO

The role of the Bishop of a Diocese is profoundly critical, not only is the Bishop the head of the local Catholic Church and Diocese, but he also serves as the corporate sole of the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School Corporation. He is an active member of the Board of Directors and serves as the final authori ty over the operation and organization of BMCHS.

O n August 25, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School announced the creation of the Bishop Ran dolph Calvo Scholarship. The newly established scholarship dedicated to Bishop Calvo recognizes a graduating 8th-grade student from a parochial school or Catholic parish who has consistently displayed a commitment to putting their faith into practice at school, at home, and within their parish community. Additionally, this student should possess a strong record of academic success, citizenship, and service. Six honorees were recognized and inducted into the BMCHS Hall of Fame, joining more than 40 others. The dinner was held at Bishop Manogue and welcomed more than 100 people to support and honor the new inductees.
Ross Barker Since graduating from Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in 1961, Ross Barker has remained an active and enthusiastic presence in Northern Nevada’s Catholic communi ty. Ross’ deep-rooted commitment to the mission and success of Bishop Manogue has helped the school community flourish amid times of challenge and triumph. He served on the Bishop Manogue Board of Directors from 2007-2013, where his professionalism, gen erosity, and faith allowed the school to prevail in uncertain and arduous circumstances. Additionally, Ross served as the president of the Serra Club and on the Board of Directors for Casa De Vida and Catholic Charities, where he was interim CEO in 2018.

Stephen and Karen Benna Stephen and Karen Benna’s affiliation with Bishop Manogue Catholic High School dates back to the 1950s when Karen’s mother Yvonne attended Bishop Manogue Catholic High School at the Flick Ranch campus. Stephen graduated from Bishop Manogue in 1970, followed by many of his family members, including his three siblings, Cathleen (Trachock) ‘72, Alexander ‘82, and Christopher ‘84; two sons JB ‘97 and Anthony ‘98; and many nieces and nephews. Pillars in the Catholic community, Stephen and Karen have contributed significantly to the Diocese of Reno in various ways. Stephen served on the building committee for the St. Rose of Lima church which led him to participate as the church’s liaison when the current Bishop Manogue campus was under construction. Stephen then served on Bishop Manogue’s Board of Directors for six years and was the chairman for two years in 2010 and 2011. Stephen’s leadership, composure, and action were crucial as the school navigated through significant transitions and obstacles. Stephen also remains active in the Miner’s Football Alumni Association Inc., where he serves as treasurer.

Charles and Jennifer Oppio Bishop Manogue Catholic High School has been a part of Charles Oppio’s life since before he was born. His father Alan graduated from Bishop Manogue in 1958 along with his sisters Allison in 1983 and Alayne in 1985. Charles graduated from Bishop Manogue in 1986, where he won three state titles for baseball and was a three-sport student-athlete, also competing in football and basketball. He played baseball for the University of Nevada, Reno and he and Jennifer were wed inside the Bishop Manogue Chapel in 1995. Shortly after college, Charles was invited by Bishop Manogue principal Robert Sullivan (“Coach Sullivan”) to help with the baseball program...and the legacy began. Now in his 30th season, Charles and his players have clinched five 3A state titles (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004) and a 4A regional championship in 2018. Charles and Jennifer embody what it means to be a part of the Bishop Manogue family. They support many deserving students each year through scholarships and tuition assistance and have been instrumental in facilitating the infrastructure to support the continued growth and success of Bishop Manogue. Charles and Jennifer are also parents to Bishop Manogue graduates: Katelyn ‘16, Kennedy ‘16, and Jensen ‘17.
Maureen O’Mara Maureen O’Mara’s connection to Bishop Manogue Catholic High School began when her husband Bill taught an early morning business law class at Bishop Manogue before starting his workday as an attorney in the ‘ 80s. A few years later, Maureen accepted an offer as a part-time volunteer math instructor from Brother Ignatius Foster. By 1990, Maureen’s volunteer role transitioned into a full-time position and a 16-year teaching career in the math department. Treasured among many Bishop Manogue students and faculty, Maureen’s genuine commitment to the academic and spiritual wellbeing of those she taught leaves a lasting legacy in the halls and classrooms of Bishop Manogue. Additionally, Maureen experienced Bishop Manogue through the lens of a parent, as a mother to nine Bishop Manogue alumni: Tim ‘90, Erin ‘91, Brian ‘92, David ‘94, Matthew ‘95, Catherine ‘97, Patrick ‘99, Bridget ‘00, and Michael ‘03.

Homecoming 2021 was one for the books! Miners young and old came together to cheer on the Bishop Manogue football team during a Friday night game under the lights of the D.J. Bernardis Field. Earlier in the week, students and staff embraced the “Metflix” Homecoming Spirit Week and dressed up as favorite Netflix show characters—everything from Stranger Things ‘80s clothes to Grey’s Anatomy scrubs. Miner alumni then joined together and reconnected at the annual Alumni & Friends Tailgate before heading to the homecoming football game where the Miners took the win over Damonte High School 32-14. During halftime, football and volleyball star athletes Sioape Vatikani and Tori Harper were named Homecoming King and Queen. Homecoming Week concluded with the semi-formal homecoming dance. Another student struggled with math and didn’t even know if he wanted to stay in school when he began as a freshman. “It wasn’t easy for him,” Ghilieri says. “But we worked with him to the very end to help him do what he wanted to do.” What he wanted to do was sail, so after graduation, he went to a maritime school in Texas and is now the captain of a Florida sailboat using his math skills on a daily basis.

Since 2009, Bishop Manogue’s ILC program has helped students learn how to learn, working through challenges that include: ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder); specific learning disabilities in math and reading; anxiety disorders; dyslexia; communications disorders and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Ghilieri has been working with paraprofessionals Jami Hunt and Nate Tremaine for the last 10 years to identify students’ learning styles and disabilities to help them navigate school and life. Santos says she learned how to learn and, as importantly, how to commu nicate what she had learned. “I was offered the ILC program in college, but I didn’t feel like I needed it,” she says. “That class prepared me for college more than anything else I did.”
Santos credits the program and her basketball prowess with getting her into Holy Names University, where she graduated in 2018 with a BS in criminal justice and an art minor.
The Results Tell the Tale Ghilieri tells of the many success stories the program has been a part of, including a young woman with a speech impediment who worked on self-determination, self-advocacy and reading skills. She recently graduated from Boise State and is now studying to be a physical therapist.
“The kids make it easy,” Ghillieri says. “They come in with a good attitude and understanding of what we need to ac complish. I’m really proud of how much work they put into their education.”
Hannah successfully graduated from Holy Names University with a degree in Criminal Justice and is now attending the police academy.
“Bishop Manogue is considered a college prep school and it didn’t always have a program to help students with diagnoses,” explains Tony Ghilieri, director of the Integrated Learning Center. “But we know it’s important for those students who want a Catholic school education and need accommodations.”
“It is cool to see the different routes students go through to reach whatever their passion is,” Ghilieri says.
The alumni and friends who have passed will always have a special place within the BMCHS family as they have made a lasting impact on the Bishop Manogue Community. In their memory, BMCHS is inspired and motivated to continue creating meaningful legacies.

It is a priority to maintain the tuition rate with the actual cost to educate a student, and once again that goal was met. Additionally, the school was able to make principal payments toward debt reduction over the last year totaling over $543K. Total debt reduction over the past two years has surpassed $1,000,000. From 2020 to 2021, total revenues increased by 9 percent to $11,170,996. This is due to an increase in total revenues which includes tuition, donations, fund raising, COVID funding, and other revenue sources. DAVE MICHITSCH ‘58 Dave Michitsch, class of ‘58, is in Rome with wife of 61 years. Mr. and Mrs. Michitsch are truly blessed to have recently welcomed their first great-grandchild, 8-month old, Brinley Marie Deyoung. Their other granddaughter, Ava Michitsch, will graduate from Manogue in June 2022.
CHUCK BURR (BMCHS friend and husband of Carol Burr ‘63) Chuck Burr was one of 37 war Veterans to make the trip to Baltimore and Washington D.C. on October 21, 2021. The trip honored veterans and brought together men who served in the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard during the time of the WWII, Korea and Vietnam wars. Chuck, along with his 16 year old grandson, Michael Micone, visited and spent time at the World War II, Korean, and Vietnam memorials as well as Arlington National Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, the Roosevelt Memorial, the Law Enforcement Memorial, and many others. Honor Flight Nevada organization has been making these trips for over ten years honoring our Veterans.

PAUL STRICKLAND ‘67 Paul attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver where he received his M.A. in English in 1974. In 1980 he received another M.A. in history from the University of Nevada, Reno. After receiving both of his Masters, Paul was hired as reporter by The Medicine Hat News in 1981 and then took a job at The Prince George Citizen, a daily paper, where he worked on and off from 1990 to 2015. Throughout his career, Paul wrote articles and columns for college, university, and astronomy-society publications, and was also a political columnist. Paul continues his work as a freelance writer, editor, and also writes reviews of books, plays, and poetry readings. He plans to have a chapbook of essays, stories, and poetry published before Christmas of 2021.

RAY HAGAR ‘71 Bishop Manogue studentathlete alum, Ray Hagar was inducted to Nevada Press NewspaperAssociationHallof Fame in September 2021. Ray retired from the Reno Gazette-Journal in 2016 as the RGJ’s senior political reporter. From 1993 to 2000 he also acted as RGJ sports editor.
JOE ARRASCADA ‘87 Joe Arrascada ‘87 won the 2020 election for University of Nevada regent District 10. In an RGJ opinion piece from October 21, 2020, Joe says “I want to bring the innovative approach I take to life to my policy making decisions while representing the voters and residents of District 10.”
Celeste retired from the University of Nevada in 2012 as an bemovedmanager.BiologyundergraduateLabsShethentoArizonatowithherdaughter’s family where she stays busy quilting and planning for a time spent with her grandchildren. Celeste’s husband, Gary spent the summer hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail. Gary has been active with his Knights of Columbus Council and Assembly. Together, Celeste and Gary have visited Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland, and are hoping to make a trip to Bavaria later in 2022.

KATIE O’GORMAN, DDS ‘05 Dr. Katie O’Gorman ‘05 joined Brunelli Dental Partners in Reno. After graduating from Bishop Manogue, she received her BS in Biology from the University of Nevada in 2009, and she received her DDS at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry in 2013. She then completed a General Practice Residency at the University of California, San Francisco the following year. She is thrilled to be back in Reno with her husband, Luke Smith ‘08, whom she married in 2019.
Kerri Garcia Hendricks was named Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at the University of Nevada in April of 2020 following a national search. Garcia Hendricks had served as Director of Communications for the University of Nevada since 2016 and as Interim Executive Director of Marketing and Communications since April 2019.

Eric attended Full Sail University in Winter Park Florida and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts. He then moved to Los Angeles to complete an internship with Wildwoods Picture and Sound. In 2016, Eric was nominated by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for a Daytime Emmy Award as Sound Editor for Outstanding Sound Editing – Animation on “Half Shell Heroes” for Nickelodeon. In 2017, he won a Daytime Emmy Award as Sound Designer/Sound Effects Editor for Amazon’s “Lost in Oz: Extended Adventure,” which was chosen as Outstanding Children’s Animated Program. Eric is currently with the Formosa Group, a full-service postproduction sound company that serves independent and studio filmmakers and content creators.

CONNOR TALBOTT ‘10 Connor Talbott ‘10 has brought the same passion and drive from his days playing football at Bishop Manogue to all his endeavors since graduating. Connor was an offensive lineman for the Wolf Pack from 20112014 and is currently a medical student at the University of Nevada, Reno. He hopes to specialize in emergency medicine as he loves the fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
Last June, Brothers Ben Gurries ‘06 and Jack Gurries ‘14 went on a life-changing pilgrimage. Their community, Servant Brothers of the Home of the Mother, brought them on a spiritual journey passing through sanctuaries, nature’s cathedrals, processions, and devotions from both France and Spain. The comradery, joy, devotion, hardships, and change of plans (adventure), brought each pilgrim closer to the Kingdom of God. Manogue Alum Niles Lujan ‘11 was recently named to the starting five of the RGJ’s All Decade Boys Basketball Team. Niles played multiple sports for Manogue and is still one of Nevada’s all-time leaders in assists and steals for basketball. Additional Manogue alumni were named to the team including Bobby Hunter ‘10, Ethan Dillard ‘11, Derek Novsek ‘15, Aidan Cantwell ‘18, Gabe Bansuelo ‘19, Kolton Frugoli ‘19, and Cort Ballinger ‘21.

GIANNA ROSSI ‘14 Gia graduated from Orvis School of Nursing in 2018. She worked for Renown medical in Telemetry until the pandemic hit and became a traveling nurse. She is currently at SLO having a wonderful time.

Gus Jr. graduated cum laude in Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno and was accepted into their medical school. After much debating, he chose Anesthesiology at Tucson Arizona. Now, Dr. Gus Rossi is entering his third year in residency and is well versed in the 60-70 hour-a-week workload.

Bishop Manogue Studentathlete alum, Chelie Senini has made quite the name for herself as a collegiate athlete at the University of Nevada, Reno. Playing softball and starting all 40 games for the Wolf Pack, Chelie was recognized for the First Team All Mountain West and set the school all-time record for stolen bases at 23-23.
Emma Pence has been featured as an asset to the Montana State Volleyball team. Emma had an impressive 2019 season as a freshman and started in all 29 games for the Bobcat volleyball program. She ended the season ranked second in the Big Sky Conference by averaging 1.10 blocks and 1.64 kills per set. Her coach, Daniel Jones, is confident that she “has the physicality and mentality to be an elite middle blocker.”
Kristen Eissmann ‘15 graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Bachelor’s in Therapeutic Recreation. She was an Honors Society member and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
