Plus much more ……..
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. There have been many defining moments during the last six weeks: leading Worship for the Bishop’s Council, a stunning production of the musical ‘Hairspray’, success in Mathematics. Challenges, sports events and photography competitions, enterprise activities, Year 11 practice examination results day. A characteristic which unites them all is a strong sense of community and common purpose. The practice examination results day was particularly powerful. The mood was very positive and supportive as students collected their results just as they will in August 2012. Their minds focused by the success of their predecessors in 2010 and 2011, our students understand that good results in the academic core subject—English, Mathematics, Science, ICT and Religious Education, plus their option subjects, will give them a much wider choice in the future. Intervention groups and additional lessons are now held every morning, evening and during the holidays to offer students a chance to improve still further and hopefully not just to achieve but to outstrip their targets. Last week Governors received a letter from the Secretary of State for Education confirming that our application to become an Academy has been approved. Having received a grant of £25,000 from the Government, Governors are now working with a team of solicitors to take this forward with a view to converting to Academy status by the summer. A much valued element of our partnership with the King’s School, Worcester is their provision of bespoke Sixth Form bursaries for Bishop Perowne students. I am pleased to report that five of our students have been successful this year. I shall be happy to discuss further details of the Bursary scheme with interested parents. In January we were able to offer some training in Citizenship to post-graduate students from our partner the University of Worcester. We shared details of our OFSTED inspection which graded us as outstanding and looked at how Citizenship may be incorporated into every lesson. We hope to further develop this in the future. Elections are currently taking place for a new parent Governor. We will begin the process of electing our Head Boy/Head Girl and Student Senior Leadership Team for the academic year 2012—2013 when we return from half term. The presentation which will be given to Year 10 students is included in this newsletter. I have been impressed by the initiative shown by Year 8 students who are raising money for St Richard’s Hospice through their ‘Flourishing Fivers’ scheme. Year 11 students are also leading economic awareness/enterprise with each tutor group to raise funds for the school. Governors have donated £10.00 to each tutor group to ‘kick start’ their fund raising. On Friday we say ‘Bon Voyage’ to all those who are taking part in the annual ski trip which always proves to be most enjoyable. I shall like to thank all those who have given time and support to our Community this term, to bring about the best for our students. My thanks to parents, carers and students for working with us. I wish everyone a very refreshing half term. Ms J Farr—Headteacher

HOLIDAY AND ABSENCE As a college we would be most grateful, if parents/carers could ensure that holiday is taken out of school time. We are only able to grant authorised holiday in certain circumstances such as: Is part of a treatment/recovery plan following injury or illness, Is part of a special family occasion e.g. wedding or funeral, Can only occur because parents/carers can only take a holiday together because work arrangements prevent holidays being taken during College holiday time. This would need to be supported by evidence from the employer that a holiday cannot be taken during College holiday time, Is part of a planned activity in which the student is a representative/participant in a sporting event and the student is representing his/her county or country, Is connected to the observance of a religious festival, Is part of a programme of respite for a student who is a young carer, Is in the judgement of the Headteacher, sought in exceptional circumstances. Absence disrupts a student’s education. One absence is enough to miss the introduction of a key skill, or a vital piece of knowledge, that is the foundation for the next stage of learning. Students who attend regularly: Make faster progress than those with poor attendance. Achieve higher results in tests and examinations. Are more successful in maintaining friendships. Participate more extensively in extra-curricular activities, social events, and extended day activities. Are less likely to be involved in crime and anti social behaviour. Parental illness, alleged bullying, shopping, visiting family, or simply not wanting to attend College are examples of unauthorised absence. Truancy is unauthorised absence. Students classified as “Persistent Absentees” whose attendance is below 85% attendance, in effect miss a whole year or more of their College career.
UNIFORM Our new pleated skirts are looking extremely smart. We wish to thank all parents/carers who have made such an effort to ensure their sons and daughter are correctly turned out for College. The new jumpers become regulation at Christmas. These can be either a plain black v-neck (long sleeved or tank top) or the Bishop Perowne College design showing a blue flash which is available from School togs. Thank you, again, to all parents who have already purchased these items for their students.
All parents/carers are reminded ‘Open Tuesday’ Every Tuesday between 3.00 pm-4.00 pm A chance to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team without a prior appointment Parents/carers are seen on a first come/first seen basis. The length of the meeting will depend on the number of people waiting to be seen

ARTS DEPARTMENT NEWS Hairspray - The Musical The set is ready, the lights are ready, the sound is ready, the band are practiced and the cast are raring to go – it’s show week. By the time this newsletter goes out the cast of our latest production ‘Hairspray’ will have performed to just under 900 people in the College Theatre. The show was sold out almost two weeks ago and we’re looking forward to an exciting if exhausting run this week. It is a different performance to any we have done before in that it very much combines performance and technical elements to build what can only be described as a spectacular experience. On Thursday 9th February, the last night of the show, the cast will enjoy an after show party until 11.30 which, if past shows are anything to go by, will be as equally amazing as the show itself. If you came to see the show then we hope you enjoyed it. GCSE Year 11 Drama Examination If your son or daughter is in Year 11 and studying for GCSE Drama then an important date for the diary is coming up. The final performance examination, worth 40% of the overall marks, is on Tuesday 24th April. Students will present their work to an external examiner and are in the process of preparing for the examination now.
Photographs and more information on Hairspray to follow in our next Newsletter published Easter 2012.
Work Placements As part of the excellent relationships that the College has with our higher education partners we are pleased to welcome two students from the Worcester College of Technology on work placements. These will take place in the week beginning 20th February and the students will experience the whole range of the College day from Tutor time, through learning and teaching in the Arts, to the extended day. Both were previously students at Bishop Perowne so it will be good to welcome them back for a while. We will also be welcoming two students from Christopher Whitehead Language College on work placements in March. Performances On Wednesday 29th February students from the Worcester Sixth Form will be performing in the College Theatre to our Year 10 Performing Arts students. The performance focuses on life at the Sixth Form and is designed to give our students an insight into what it is like to study there. The Sixth Form College will return on Friday 9th March to present a different performance to our Year 8 students. Success in Photography Photography students in Years 9, 10 and 11 all entered a Rotary Club competition based on the theme of 'Olympic Spirit/Olympic Dream' and won both the intermediate and senior age categories. Amber Sparrey in Year 11 and Max Willcock in Year 10 both won the senior award for the senior band in Worcester, and Leah Kainey and Glenn Strachan both won for the intermediate category. The photographs of all four will now go on to be judged in the district finals for the area.

ARTS DEPARTMENT NEWS A huge thank you to all of Key Stage 3 Drama Club for their hard work devising and performing their play last week. We've had some really positive feedback and they represented the College admirably. Key Stage 4 Drama group re-starts after half term, we really need to get our numbers up. Open to Years 9, 10 & 11, the group will be run on Wednesdays, 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm. There will also be a new group for Key Stage 3 starting after half term. The focus for this will be a Geography one. This will be a really promising project, where amongst other things, we will explore our partnerships with our Tanzanian partner schools.
LEARNING AND TEACHING Lesson Observations 2011- 2012 has seen a step rise in the number of lessons judged to be good and outstanding. By the end of December over 80% of learning and teaching was judged to be good or outstanding. Between the 31 st January and 2nd February all teaching staff were observed enabling us to focus on the new OFSTED framework with the specific inclusion of Literacy and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education across the curriculum. Early evaluation of the outcomes of these observations show that over 85% of lessons were judged to be good or outstanding. The results of a recent Teaching and Learning survey may be found below. BISHOP’S COUNCIL WORSHIP On Friday, 27th January, the Worship Team supported by Ms Farr, Mr Bethel, Reverend Peter Haddleton and Dr Sarah Brush, were given the honour of leading Worship for the Bishop’s Council, held at Holland House in Cropthorne. The theme was faith, hope and love. Having endured a minibus journey with a tree on board, we had a short time to prepare ourselves. Items included some beautifully delivered readings, profoundly powerful poems students had written, a most moving dance and group music; each one of us contributed in our own unique way. The centre piece of the Worship was the lighting of our memorial candle and the creation of a Hope Prayer Tree. We were then invited to share a delicious supper with members of the Council.

ECONOMIC AWARENESS Young Enterprise/Cutting Edge Shane Barratt, Charlie Burton, Jack Cooper, Robert Graham, Lauren Heeks, Harry Miller, Holly Page, Tyler Parish, Porphiris Porphiriou, Matthew Savage, Daniel Till, Bradley Webb and Louis Woodhouse – collective known as ‘Cutting Edge’ Young Enterprise Team have been busy raising money for their business. Last term the students attended local primary school Christmas Fairs, the Worcester Victorian Christmas Market and Bewdley Christmas market. This term they are running a raffle at the school production of ‘Hairspray’ and attending the Malvern Spring Gardening Show. As well as writing up their final company report, revising from a case study in preparation for their examination and attending a presentation evening to celebrate their successes throughout the academic year. We are also investigating the possibility of taking a group of students to Aston University to participate in an enterprise activity organised by Rolls Royce. Final product ideas include wristbands for Year 11 leavers, paper lanterns of various designs filled with various items and photo holders. I am sure you will join me in wishing these students good luck with their enterprising activities and their final examination.
ICT DEPARTMENT NEWS—SAFER INTERNET DAY 2012 To mark Safer Internet Day 2012, all students attended an assembly led by Mr Farmer, Teacher of ICT. The power point presentation shown to students follows here. Students also watched two films on internet safety which may be accessed via our website at www.bishopperowne.co.uk.
The films on line showed students the popularity of the internet and in particular movies on YouTube which shows how powerful the internet can be. Jamal Edwards founded SB.TV in 2006 when he began filming rap freestyles with a handy cam, which he then uploaded to his YouTube account, which is now worth £40 million, Students were also warned of the dangers of using the internet and were reminded not to divulge personal details to people they don’t know and to ensure that you have your privacy settings set correctly on social networking sites, such as Face Book. Do not ‘speak’ with people on line that you don’t know Students were advised that pressure from peers, blackmailing and ‘cyber bullying’ may also be experienced when using social networking sites. Anyone experiencing any of these must report it immediately. If students are victims of ’cyber’ bullying, blackmailing or peer pressure please report this to a member of staff.

THE DIARY OF LIZZIE THE LASER It has been a little quiet following the rush to design and make Christmas decorations, and personalised gifts. Dave started looking at ‘Hairspray’ souvenirs over Christmas and has designed some drinks coasters, key rings, bookmarks, door hanger and a cast photo jigsaw; some of which you can see below.
Coasters
Key rings
Bookmarks Door hanger
It is hoped that they will go on sale for the performances – delivery of laserable wood depending. There will be an order form available. More and more students are starting to design projects with 2D design including; clocks with year 10; main Design and Technology projects with year 11 and a variety of Enterprise ideas. I was resited in C3 to make more room, as well as to assist the venting of fumes out of the window.

Page 13
LIZZIE THE LASER continued …. Coasters showing the detail that can be achieved from a photograph. So if you have a favourite album cover, film or photograph, Dave can turn it into a drinks coaster for you.
Photographs can also be turned into jigsaw puzzles in a variety of sizes; Dave has even designed a jigsaw with ‘bone’ cut-outs for dog lovers.
For the recent Bishop’s Worship, 102 filigree note cards were made so that ‘prayers’ could be written on. They were highly successful according to feedback.
Ideas are being transformed into 2 dimensional drawings which will hopefully, come to life as 3 dimensional projects. Textiles is an area to be developed for laser cutting and etching; this can include pattern drawing and cutting; etching onto fabric for a ‘patch’ to be attached to clothing or bags; intricate lace work and felt patterns. There is so much potential for students to let their imagination run wild and design anything – I can cut it if it can be drawn. These are ‘potpourri’ containers taken from the successful tea light design and scaled up to a larger size. They have a ‘shabby chic’ finish and a removable lid; making an ideal gift for Mothering Sunday. Yours Lizzie the Laser

CAR BOOT SALE SATURDAY, 18th FEBRUARY AT 10 AM -1 PM We are hoping to have a car boot sale at Bishop Perowne College to help raise funds for a sensory unit. This is a room will provide a quiet space equipped with soft furnishing, a music system and specialist lighting equipment. These spaces can be used by students with additional learning needs such as Autism ands Aspergers Syndrome, as well as those with anger management and emotional needs. The sensory rich environment is proven to have calming qualities and to help students to de-escalate their behaviour. We have a space available, and now seek ways to raise the funds needed to equip such a valuable resource ourselves. The cost will be £5.00 per car. We hope you are able to support us. Please see notice on her door for days and times. Mr. Elmougy is holding his sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays after college till the exams in March. Mr.Annis is holding his chemistry booster sessions on Tuesday and Thursday at 8am till 8.30 am. All are welcome. Psychology Years 9, 10 and 11 should now be revising for exams in May. Year 10 and 11 unit 2 Topic C,D and E will be on Friday, 18th May. Year 9 dates are yet to be confirmed. Key Stage 4 Chemistry Quiz On Tuesday, 24th January, 4 of our great chemists went head to head with students from King’s High School in Warwick, in a Chemistry Competition. Jack Barwell and Sam Cutler in Year 11, and Michael King and Jacob Robinson both Year 10 represented Bishop Perowne with confidence and determination. The boys made a fantastic start, leading from the first round. King’s soon caught up in the final round and the quiz went into a tie. The outcome depended on the tiebreaker question. The excitement in the room was buzzing and the atmosphere became tense as the students sat on the edge of their seats in order to secure a place in the next round. Sadly though, King’s High shouted out the answer in a flash and stole the opportunity from the boys who congratulated their opponents and wished them luck in the second round. The boys were splendid in their performance and King’s High said they would be afraid if they were to meet again next year. Well done to you all!

I compete mainly in the K1 discipline, in flat water, and have progressed to Boys B in sprints and I am now in Division 3 for marathon racing, I train at least 7 times a week all year round, which involves on water and dry land training. On land training builds up strength and stamina, so I do weight lifting, core muscles, and cardio and running. I also use paddling machines to help with technique. Most of this takes place at the Canoe Club, and I also train individually at home. Sprint racing takes place at Nottingham Water Sports Centre, once a month from April to September. Paddlers of all abilities compete in the two-day event in races of 200m, 500m, and 1,000m. I compete in K1, K2 and K4 races. I am in Boys B division, which means that I compete with others boys under 18 years of the same ability. I enter in three races each day, but there are also the heats to get through, so it feels like much more! I was very proud to win medals in the National Championships in 2010 and 2011. After each event, I could be promoted or demoted on my performance. I aim to be in Boys A this year, which is the top division for my age. I was very close to achieving it last year. Marathon racing takes place all over the country and all through the year. I have progressed from division 9 to division 3. Usually marathons are raced on ability, not age, so I could be racing against people much older than I am. The higher divisions do longer races and more portages. I frequently race for 18 miles with two portages. A portage involves getting out of the kayak at a given point, carrying it while running, then re-entering the water to paddle again. On January 8th, 2012, I took part in the Frank Luzmore Race at Elmbridge, in a K2. The race covered 12.5 miles and 2 portages. We came a respectable third. I have also competed in the National Indoor Championships at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London, where I paddled on the machines against other people. I have been selected for the British Canoe Union Development Regatta in Saint Laurent-Blangy, France, which takes place on 28th and 29th January 2012. I was spotted by the British selectors while taking part at events in Nottingham and Reading. This is my first international event and I have the chance to show what I can do. It is really important for my kayaking career. My ultimate goal is to take part in the Olympics in 2020. It would be fantastic to represent my country, but in the meantime I will try and make as many trips as I can to get into the Great Britain Team. I am looking for sponsorship to help me with the ongoing costs of kayaking, I have bought my own K1, which is a marathon weight boat, so when I use it for sprints I have to put weights in it. I purchased it second hand, which cost me £1,250. My Jantex paddles cost £300. Ideally I would like to upgrade my kayak to a Nelo, which is in excess of £3,000. I need numerous tops and shorts for competing and training. In addition, my parents have purchased a roof rack and V bars to transport my boat to the various races. We also have to stay overnight for many events adding to the cost of race entries and club membership fees. I appreciate my family for all the support they give me in my chosen sport, in time and financially, and also the coaches at the Worcester Canoe Club for all their expertise and encouragement. GIFTED AND TALENTED NEWS During this half term the students involved in this year’s Magistrate’s Mock Trial Competition have benefitted hugely from the help and guidance received from two local Magistrates who have been joining us after College on Fridays to help us with our preparations. They have found it really interesting to learn about the role of a Magistrate as well as listening to their advice as to how to address the court and how to identify facts of significance within the statements of the witnesses. The competition takes place on Saturday, 3rd March. Latin continues to run on Tuesdays after College and continues to be a popular and enjoyable experience for many of our students. Some students have now started on the third and final unit in their preparations to be entered for a GCSE equivalent qualification in the near future. I would also like to take the opportunity again to publicly thank the Head of Classics at the King’s School, Worcester for her continued support each week. Bishop Perowne students really appreciate her expertise and guidance. Just to reiterate, the opportunity to study Latin is available to all students regardless of age or ability. There have been many successes this half term for our Gifted and Talented students with many taking part in the sold out performances of “Hair Spray” that has already been enjoyed by so many as well as sporting successes. Next half term we look forward to Ms Morris’s trip to the Land Rover/Jaguar factory in Birmingham for our students that are interested in a career in Engineering. Students will be able, as a special treat, to take part in Land Rovers off road challenge facility which should be both educational and lots of fun.
£10.00 CHALLENGE Tutor Groups have all been given £10.00 by the Governing Body to start them off to raise money for our chosen charities. The following presentation was given to our students by Tom Cleaveley and Will Sowden. Hello, on behalf of the Leadership Team, community Parliament, Will and I would like to introduce you to the £10.00 Challenge. A competition to see which form can make the most money with a donation of £10.00. All students in the Tutor Group will have to work together, and plan out an interesting event, that only requires £10.00 to set up. It can be events like car washes, cake sales, anything that you think will make the most money, but it has to be interesting. All the money that is raised by your Tutor Group can go towards our chosen charity Unicef, or towards something that benefits the whole school. Each Community will have a small period of time to make as much money as possible, and the Form that makes the most money will win a prize. Members of the Student Leadership Team and Community Captains will be visiting Forms to help you out and try to come up with some extra ideas if you are struggling. If you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask us. So from the Student Leadership Team, the Community Captains, Will and I we wish you all GOOD LUCK!
