Half term, half year, is always a water shed in the life of a school. All week we have been enjoying our production of ‘Grease’, the culmination of many months of work. By the end of Thursday 550 Primary School students and evening audiences totalling 650 will have witnessed the energy and enthusiasm of the team of 125 who have been involved in the show. I should like to record my thanks to all those who have given so much to make for this memorable experience. As always we have packed a great deal into six week: a mock examination results day, an inspection by Ofsted the result of which we await, participation in ‘Maths Feast’ at the University of Worcester and a Political Forum at the Kings School, a major Art project, an ‘Insanity’ Zumba session involving a number of staff and students, an Olympic Legacy Sports’ Day in partnership with our Primary Schools, Internet Safety week and an evening at The Hive to commemorate the anniversary of the Holocaust. We are glad to announce that we now have a defibrillator in College which will not only offer a valuable facility to our students and staff, but also the local community. Full details of these activities can be found on our website at www.bishopperowne.co.uk, which is updated several times a week, and also in this newsletter. In January we were joined by Ms Gunn, who is teaching in the History department and Mr Ross who is teaching across the curriculum. I am pleased to announce the birth of Isabella ReeveMcKew in December. Our Chaplaincy Team has grown, too; Rev. Julieann Watson, Rector of St Barnabas’ Church and Governor of Bishop Perowne, has now taken up her role as School Chaplain. Her ideas for future development dovetail perfectly with the strong tradition in Chaplaincy at Bishop Perowne and should yield some exciting opportunities for the future. She will be joined by Rev. Rachel Spence and Rev. Diane Cooksey who we welcome warmly. Captain Rick Tett continues to offer faithful, practical and energetic service to our College community. Mr Manship has taken responsibility for leading Worship in the College. Half term will be a time when our Year 11 students begin their final preparation for the examinations which start in March with practical modules and in early May for written papers. We wish them well. I thank you for your support this term and wish everyone a very happy holiday.
Plus much more ………..

Geography News Miss Brockley’s Year 9 group are using some new apps and or codes to investigate consequences of climate change.
Mathematics Department News Two teams of our most talented Year 10 students attended the Maths Feast Competition at Worcester University. They were up against teams from Kings and RGS as well as other local schools, and did very well. Chloe Davies, Florence Wood, Sukhraj Chanal, Matthew Green, Oliver Parker, Felix Reeves, Clara Dunster and Brittnay Ratcliffe. Well done Year 11 are really giving their all to try and beat our best results ever in Mathematics. More than 30 students have been attending Maths Breakfast Club early on a Thursday and Friday to scoff croissants and breakfast muffins whilst preparing for their important Summer examinations. Good luck Y11!
STEM The club continues to grow from strength to strength as the academic year progresses - more and more students are immersing themselves in the exciting activities on offer at the club. So much so that students were invited to suggest investigations they would like to do themselves, within reason of course! Experiments suggested ranged from a self-inflating balloon and static electricity to making a tornado and elephant's toothpaste! Our longer term members continue to work towards their CREST awards to gain accreditation for their work done within the club. Our students also look forward to the Big Bang Fair trip next month at the NEC Birmingham. Hopefully this event will give students even more ideas and inspiration for future STEM club activities! STEM club runs every Thursday 3 - 4 pm and all students are welcome to attend.

History Department News During Arts Week, a trip is running to Auschwitz in Poland to visit the most sinister of the Nazi camps. Twenty-nine students and three members of staff will journey down to Gatwick to catch a flight to Krakow, returning three days later. This year is the 70th year anniversary of the liberation of the camps and the poignancy of the visit will leave an indelible impression on all who attend the trip.
ICT Department News Safer Internet Day Students at Bishop Perowne have been supporting the international initiative of ‘Safer Internet Day’ during the week beginning 9th February 2015. This year focused on ‘Let’s create a better internet together’ looking at the more positive side of using the Internet. To support this students have participated in Cyber Security workshops run by an external visitor from e-Skills, attend assemblies on Internet Safety and Safeguarding, undertaken literacy articles related to the ICE Bucket Challenge to reflect the use of the Internet for positive use. During ICT lessons students have completed an online quiz to see how much of a ‘good’ friend they are when using the Internet and identified aspects of CyberBullying. During form time students will have been having conversations with their form tutor about their online presence, e-Safety and CyberBullying. The e-Skills workshops taught by Rhian Kavanagh covered the importance of being careful about what you post and who can potentially see that content. She also covered the vast array of careers available in cyber security as well as outlining the national shortage of cyber security experts. The feedback received from students has been very positive indeed.
English Department News This term Year 11 have been working very hard on their controlled assessment folders, and should all be incredibly proud of the effort they have put in to ensuring that their work is as fabulous as they could possibly make it. The hard work will continue after half term as year ten begin working on their English Literature course, and Year eleven complete their final units of work in preparation for their exams. Years eight and nine have been busy studying different writers’ work this term, and year seven have completed an introduction to Shakespeare which has been brilliant fun. Well done everyone, and keep up the good work!

Design and Technology Department News—Lizzie Laser’s Blog Lizzie/George & Georgiana Blog February 2015 Students continue to design and produce interesting projects; from year 8 graphics who are currently designing clocks, to year 9 engineering students designing tables. Year 11 are completing their final D&T projects, and one student is combining sublimation techniques with 2D designed components to create a bespoke unit for his bedroom. The art deco design was ‘copied’ and ‘repeated’, to give a larger design that will fit into a frame to attach to his doors.
The engineering students have been designing tables in a 3D drawing package and using the 3D printers, ‘George’ and ‘Georgiana’, have modelled their designs.
Year 8 graphics students persist with their projects, developing greater knowledge and understanding of 2D drawing skills. Moving on from simple drinks coasters, they have widened their skills to use a variety of drawing tools, images and text, to expand simple ideas into more complex, individual and bespoke clock projects.
Bookmarks and small trophies were requested to present to EAL students who attended the EAL Activity Day. It was felt that ‘useable’ rewards were presented, and bookmarks seemed the logical option.
Finally; through a mutual contact, National Trust at Loughton Court were approached to propose an idea to promote their future ‘jigsaw collection’ campaign. Based on the idea of the old numbered thermometer to advertise collected jigsaws, jigsaw pieces were designed to allow a visual on-going record of Coughton Courts’ record of jigsaws collected. With pieces numbered between 100 and 900, they can display the pieces in any format they like. In 2014 they collected in excess of 800 jigsaws; they hope to do better this year. To help in their collection, a double sided jigsaw was designed and sent to them. Message from National Trust Coughton Court Look what kindly came in the post today from Bishop Perowne College - our own wooden jigsaw :)

Science Department News STUDENTS at Bishop Perowne C of E College will be given an exciting lesson in the different types of engineering when a national roadshow by Worcester Bosch visits on Wednesday, February 25. The roadshow is touring secondary schools across the UK but the company's Worcester headquarters are not far from Bishop Perowne, in Cotswold Way.
The All Around You roadshow is an interactive presentation, given by a professional science and technology communicator and a local Bosch engineer. It uses Bosch innovations to explain what engineering is; includes many fun demonstrations and highlights how exciting and important engineering is. There is also chance for careers advice. Members of the audience will also be invited to participate in key demonstrations. About 450 students from Years 7-9, aged 11 to 13, will be able to attend the roadshow and demonstrations will cover science, maths, design and technology principles and have been aligned with the national curriculum. A key part of Bosch’s roadshow is also to highlight how engineering is vital in helping us to conserve global resources and create a more sustainable future, from the emphasis on more energy-efficient products and technologies, to using renewable energy. Callum Aitken, subject leader for science, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to see the real world benefits and applications in science and to see how far reaching science actually is. It is also an opportunity for these students, prior to making their options choices, to see the potential careers involved in STEM related subjects and the added benefit of having a national employer like BOSCH nearby can only help to inspire them to achieve well in these subjects.”

Teachers will give Superstar Cards to students that they feel has gone the extra mile. Students will then take the card to Miss Nabi for a little chocolate or sweetie reward! Praise postcards go in the post to parents. Since the launch Lashanda Robertson has received 3 Superstar Cards! What an amazing feat and a truly an outstanding Bishops’ girl! Before Christmas, William McCrea was invited to read the final lesson in Worcester Cathedral's Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on 23 December. He represented the junior church of the Cathedral and read the lesson (the beginning of St John's Gospel) with great confidence and clarity to a packed cathedral. This is something to feel really proud of. Ms Nabi—Year 7 Leader
Year 10 Well done to students in Year 10 who are really putting the effort into their studies and achieving and exceeding their targets! You are well on your way to success in Year 11. Peer Mentors The Peer Mentor Service operates to support Year 7 and 8 students who either feel lonely, experience difficulties making friends or need to talk to someone about a personal concern/problem. The aim of the service is to promote student wellbeing, friendships and a sense of community within Bishop Perowne CE College. The search for new Peer Mentors started again this term and there has already been lots of interest. Students who are currently in Year 8 and 9 are asked to fill in an application form to explain why they would like to be a Peer Mentor and what qualities they could bring to the role. Any student who is interested should collect an application from Miss Spurgin.

Perrins Community Perrins Community this term have looked at Safer Internet usage. In tutor time they have read articles, watched reports and explored why the internet should be used with some caution. Students have learnt techniques for how to deal with cyber bullies, report offensive materials and above all, keep themselves safe online. The internet is a world of opportunities and information for all young people and having such an expanse of knowledge literally at their finger tips is a really useful tool with research and revision. I hope that all Perrins students take on board what they have learnt with heir tutors and in their Acts of Collective Worships this week to make sure they browse safely. Ms Nabi
Student Council Student Council has begun the New Year with many great plans for the upcoming months. In our last meeting of the previous year, the ideas of school discos and a ‘movie night’ were raised. We have decided to follow on from these ideas and as of March 2015, we will be running a movie night. This will be an after-school club where students can buy a ticket to watch a movie in our school theatre. Members of Student Council chose to have three groups for these movie nights: Year 7, Years 8-10 and Year 11. we felt these were the best groups so people would be able to watch films of different age ratings should they wish to do so. Movie Night will hopefully take place on Wednesdays after school with our first session taking place on Wednesday 4th March. Refreshments will be provided! In the first week of the new term, posters will be displayed around the school buildings with more information about the club.
Boris’ Blog: The School’s Golden Retriever Hi everyone, It’s been a cold couple of weeks, but no snow so far I’ve been looking forward to having a roll in the snow and building a snow dog with the children. I love listening to the children in the Nurture Base listening to their play reading, I sit under the table and it’s relaxing because they read so well, and are enjoying what they doing. I especially love the laughter and the way they encourage each other with their comments. It feels good to be around so many people who care for me and each other, I am a lucky dog. I am really looking forward to next term as the weather will be warming up and spring is on its way. When we all set out new term targets I plan to continue with my healthy eating plan and take lots of regular exercise. This will link in to one of our term objectives to help students to be aware of the importance of healthy life styles.

Sports Department News EAL SPORTS DAY The EAL and PE departments joined together in arranging a morning of sport at College. Children from Holly Mount and St Georges joined us in the Sports hall to play games and compete in a mini athletics competition. The event started off with totally mixed teams to play 5 a side court ball a game where you score by passing the ball to your team mate who is stood on the bench. This was a new game for the children and they really enjoyed it with lots of cheering and support for each other. Claudio Almedia and Andre did a fantastic job as referees and each team was managed by a Bishop Perowne leader. After a break for squash and biscuits they took part in a mini athletics competition with the following events Basketball throw, Long Jump, Agility Run, Skipping, Foam Javelin and Speed Bounce. Each competitor scored points for their school. Holly Mount was just in the lead before the final relay races. It was all decided on the last race with St Georges just winning by 1 point. Everyone left with a smile on their face and have asked if they can do it again. It was a great morning seeing so many children with different languages, all communicating through sport and all showing respect and support to one another. Congratulations to the following for their contribution as a leader, organiser or coach. Valdo Gomes, Claudio Almeida, Tiago Conde de Sousa, Aldo Soares, Aleksandra Wolanska, Katarzyna Liegman, Natan Redlicki, Arafat Raham, Mohammed Usama Ditta , Sydney Taylor, Andrei Aizatulin, Maria Conde e Sousa, Luis Ribeiro, Oliver Chorvat, Samuel chorvat, Tanaka Muzira, Natasha Castro Tree, Shrabon Rozario, Tomas Formigao and Dominika Burak

On Friday, February 6, about 50 children from city schools will converge upon Bishop Perowne C of E College, in Merriman’s Hill Road, and take part in everything from benchball to athletics. This is a joint venture between the Physical Education department and the EAL (English as an Additional Language) department. Ana Griffiths, one of the college’s EAL learning leaders , said: “The idea is to promote teamwork and have fun. Even though you can’t speak each other’s language you can still work as a team and have fun doing it.” The Year four and five pupils who will be attending include children from Portugal, Poland, France, Holland ,Bangladesh, Turkey, Romania and Slovakia to name but a few. Bishop's students will be assisting as team leaders. Mrs Griffiths said: “We just want to show the youngsters that there are no barriers just because you can’t speak in the same language.” The EAL department at Bishop Perowne C of E College is very committed to helping every student to achieve their full potential no matter what their entry level of English is when they come to our school. “We will have a presentation of awards afterwards and, if the event is a success, we hope to do it again next year.”

Sports Department News The EAL Department have been very active this term. We joined forces with the PE Department on the 6th of February and organised an EAL Sports Fun Day, when we invited some local primary schools to bring their own EAL students. Together with our own students in leadership roles, everyone took part in a variety of different games and activities and had great fun. Our thanks to Ms Farr for her support and allowing us to hold this event. We also had an EAL trip to the wonderful school musical production of Grease which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Our thanks to Mr Plant and his excellent team for helping us arrange that. The EAL Department

College News Parent Pay We are trying to make things easier for parents/carers and part of this is the removal of cash and cheque payments to the College. To do this we are providing an e-payment method to enable you to pay for dinner money, trips, music lessons etc. This can be carried out online using a very secure website called Parent Pay or in cash at local stores where you see the Pay Point logo. However, you can still pay be cash or cheque into the College by taking it to the Finance Office window in Reception. Therefore, you need not worry if you cannot get to a computer or a Pay Point machine. The Finance Office will always be there for you to use. All parents/carers will be sent a letter with an individual log-in code and password. Once you have this you will be able to use Parent Pay (or Pay Point) to pay for trips etc. Please not that we are not accepting payment for school dinners quite yet. This service will come on stream soon after the half-term holiday, but until then, please continue to pay for school dinners in the old way—giving the money for the student to pay at the canteen counter.
Show My Homework At Bishop Perowne College we strongly believe that the setting of high quality homework supports learning in the classroom and, from the feedback we have received from parents, we know that you share this viewpoint. In order to support our students in the completion of homework, and provide greater access to what homework has been set, we have introduced a system called Show My Homework. Show My Homework will not only be of great value of students, but parents will be able to access all homeworks that have been set for their Son or Daughter by visitinghttps://bishopperowne.showmyhomework.co.uk and filtering for the appropriate group or teacher. Homework Timetables for all 5 year groups are on the website. These timetables reflect when your Son or Daughter will have homework from the various subjects and also an approximate amount of time they should expect to spend on them. These timetables are a starting point and, through the gathering of feedback from a range of stakeholders, they will be amended and adjusted throughout the year. The latest versions will always be available through the College website. We hope that Show My Homework will be a very useful tool in supporting your Son or Daughters progress and attainment at Bishop Perowne. Any feedback on your experience with Show My Homework or the homework timetables would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to contact Mr Kling (Deputy Headteacher) via email, dkl@bishop-perowne.worcs.sch.uk, or phone using 01905 746800.

Trips and Visits In spite of being a relatively short half-term, a wide range of trips and visits have taken a significant proportion of our students off site for enrichment of their curriculum. The typical January and February weather has not put off the PE department, who have continued to compete in a host of different fixtures and events with students from all year groups. Students have also been involved in the following trips and visits: The first ‘Rewards trip’ to the Vue cinema in recognition of good and outstanding attitudes to learning, involving 200 students. A publicity photo shoot at Worcester Rugby Football Club. A political forum debate at King’s School Worcester. An arts project to create site specific art, involving year nine students and primary school children. A visit to Long Lartin prison. The Maths Feast at the University of Worcester. Spectating the Worcester Wolves Basketball team at the Worcester Arena. We are now approaching the busiest time of year for trips and visits and plans are well under way opportunities across all year groups and most subject areas. Details for some of these trips and visits have already been shared, and further details will be published during the second half of this term. Mr J Manship—Educational Visits Co-ordinator
Able Students Parents/carers of students who fall within the new definition of ‘more able’ received letters at the start of this term. All subject teachers are aware of the more able register and have begun the process of identifying the need for and providing individualised support to specific students. Subject teachers, subject leaders and I will all be monitoring these students as the year progresses, with a particular focus on more able students in year eleven. More able students in years ten and eleven have been invited to a special evening at Worcester Sixth Form College on Thursday 5th March. This will include a range of talks and presentations which will provide some valuable early guidance regarding applications to some of the more aspirational degree courses on offer. Parents/carers of these students should have been passed a letter regarding this by their son/daughter. If this is not the case, please contact Mr Manship. Replies need to be returned to Mr Manship by Wednesday 25th February. During the second half of this term, we will be using the autumn term assessment results, coupled with transfer data from primary schools, to identify and add to the register students in year seven who fall within the definition of ‘more able’. Parents/carers of these students will be informed by letter once the identification process is complete. Mr J Manship—More Able Students Co-ordinator

A red nose themed cake sale is being organised for Thursday 12th March - all donations most welcome. Message from Local Police Cemetery Parking Police have asked local schools to ask pupils to stop using the cemetery as a cut through. Police have received complaints that some pupils from local schools leave taps running, shout and scream whilst funerals are being held and throw bottles at each other. Police have said that whilst they were at the cemetery it was apparent that some parents are using the cemetery as an impromptu pick up point, they have added that this and pupils behaviour is obviously unacceptable as there are people visiting loved one's graves and funerals taking place. 40157 Mark Boys Police Community Support Officer Claines & Arboretum
