Leavers’ Eucharist

17-23

Message from the Headteacher I start and end my introduction to our newsletter with some words which will be shared with Year 11 at their Award Ceremony on Tuesday, 20th May and their Leavers’ Eucharist on Friday, 23rd May. These prayers and the poem emphasise the way in which we seek to provide ‘Education with Character’ nurturing in our young people the personal qualities which will enable them to make a real difference in society and to lead fulfilling lives. Since the Easter holidays, during which many staff gave time to come into College to offer extra revision sessions, supporting the students of Year 11 has been our sharp focus. Staff have offered weekend revision sessions and students have taken advantage of ‘on line’ support from their teachers via email during the evening and at weekends. The ‘examination season’ is well underway with more examinations than ever scheduled to take place before half term. We wish Year 11 well in the future and thank them and their parents and carers for all they have given to the life of our College. On Friday they will receive an engraved pen and a certificate as a token of appreciation from the Governors. This has been a very short half term, however, as always a very full one. We were pleased to welcome Ms Lisa Mcleod as Teaching Assistant in the Mathematics Department and Mrs Ana Griffiths as Teaching Assistant supporting students with English as an additional language, in particular Portuguese. Mr Manship took up his permanent post on the Senior Leadership Team with special responsibility for Able Students and External Trips and visits; he will also be working closely with Mr Plant who leads on Learning and Teaching. It is with great sadness that we learnt of the untimely death of Mr Mike Dodd, a highly valued member of our Site Team. Mike was a true gentleman whose perfect manners and quiet diligence will be sadly missed. His cheerful disposition, team work and skills enhanced our College. He had been suffering from cancer; our thoughts and prayers will be with his family as they prepare for his funeral and for some time to come. We are also greatly saddened by the death of our former student, Matthew Burton. Matthew is remembered as a true ‘Bishops Boy’; we are very glad to have known him and surround his family with our condolences.

Plus much more ………..

College Worship Another term has passed and many more things have been accomplished. We are pleased to have held another successful Eucharist, which was superbly led by Archdeacon Roger Morris. It is an honour to have worked alongside such an inspiring figure. This term, we are actively involved in the growth of the worship team and have continued to implement community acts of worship, in the hope of establishing better links between the college community and how the acts of worship are run. Many members of the team help create these acts of worship. We also hope to redecorate our Worship space as part of Arts Week as we look to recruit more members to our team. Mr Bethel

Attendance and Uniform Attendance of our students at Bishop Perowne College remains at our target level of 94%. We would be grateful if you would continue to encourage your child to attend each day, good attendance is essential to good academic attainment. Should you require permission to take your child out of school for any reason please contact Mrs Trish English (Attendance officer) who will advise you of our college’s current position on requested absences. Our regular uniform checks show us that the overwhelming majority of Bishop Perowne Students take great pride in their appearance and wear our uniform, extremely well. A reminder that jumpers remain part of the school uniform until the weather becomes too warm. At this point, a message from the Head teacher will inform students and carers that the jumpers are no longer required until September.

Open Tuesday All parents/carers are reminded ‘Open Tuesday’ Every Tuesday between 3.00 pm-4.00 pm A chance to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team without a prior appointment. One another’s light - Address to Year 11

Ms Farr

One Another's Light It’s hard to know what brought us here Away from here we’ve hardly ever been and now Are never likely to go again. Faces are lost, and places passed At which we could have stopped, And stopping, been glad enough. Some faces left a mark, And we on them might have wrought Some kind of charm or spell To make their futures work, But it's hard to guess How one person on another Works an influence. We pass, and lit briefly by one another's light Think the way we go is right.

Leavers’ Eucharist—Friday, 23rd May 2014 The Eucharistic Prayer begins with: Leader: The Lord be with you Leader: Lift up your hearts Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

All respond: And also with you All respond: We lift them to the Lord All respond: It is right to give thanks and praise

The president praises God for his mighty acts, and then all respond:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the Power of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest.

The president recalls the Last Supper -Concluding by saying:

Great is the mystery of faith:

All say: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Prayer continues and leads into a final act of praise, to which all say: Amen. The Eucharistic Prayer is followed by the Lords Prayer (which all are invited to join in with) Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done; On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

Leavers’ Eucharist—Friday, 23rd May 2014

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Religious Education Department News Year 10 Gifted and Talented Trip On Wednesday, 9th April ten students from Year Ten joined a number of local schools to attend a Gifted and Talented Conference for Religious Education at The Hive. The day was hosted by Worcester University and the Worcestershire Standing Advisory Council for RE. Students took part in a series of workshops which involved the theme of ‘Exploring and Answering the Difficult Questions in Life’. Students discussed the meaning of ‘good’ and considered what can make people happy. They explored Buddhist meditation techniques and took part in a question and answer session with The Venerable Tsuiltrim Tenzin Choesang, the Chair of SACRE. They also took part in interactive workshops on the problem of evil and suffering and how faith can be used in a positive way. The day was challenging and exciting; the students who attended would like to begin a Philosophy Club to continue their exploration of the ‘Big Questions’. The first Philosophy Club meeting will run on Wednesday 4 th June at 3pm in M1, any interested students in Years Nine and Ten are welcome to attend.

RE Intervention Support The department would like to wish all of Year Eleven the very best in their exams and say a big well done to students for their hard work in preparing for Paper One of their Religious Studies GCSE. Paper Two is on June 4th at 9am. To support students in preparing for Paper Two Mrs Horovitz, Subject Leader for RE, will be running two consecutive revision days in the May Half Term holiday on Thursday 29 th and Friday 30th May. The sessions conducted on the Thursday will be repeated on the Friday therefore students do not need to attend on both days. There is no requirement for students to attend all of the sessions – they should choose the areas that they would like help and support with. The sessions will run as follows: Thursday 29th May/Friday 30th May 9-10.15am – Religion and Conflict 10.30-11.45am – Religion and Medicine 12.30 – 1.45pm – Religious Expression 2.00 – 3.15pm – Authority, Religion and State In order to ensure that space is available for as many students as possible to attend I would request that, if possible, students from sets 1-4 who would like to attend do so on Thursday and students from sets 5-7 who would like to attend do so on Friday. If students are attending for the full day they will need to bring refreshments with them as the canteen will not be open in half term. Online support continues to be available – students can use the chat and forums function on Frog and leave Mrs Horovitz a message in the chat-room titled’ Year Eleven RE Revision Support’ or they can email Mrs Horovitz at re@bishop-perowne.worcs.sch.uk this account is checked regularly and enquiries will be responded to.

Geography Department News Geography fieldwork In the third week of term, our two year ten GCSE geography classes each spent one day collecting data for their Controlled Assessments. This is an essential part of their syllabus and constitutes 25% of their final grade. The theme for this year’s work is changes along a river’s course. Consequently, the students travelled the short distance to the Knapp and Papermill nature reserve near Alfrick to study the characteristics of Leigh Brook. For the uninitiated, this nature reserve is managed by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and is a beautiful blend of broad-leafed woodland, wild flower meadows and river habitats – well worth a visit! The Trust allows school groups access to the site for fieldwork by prior arrangement, but it is open to the public all the time. Students worked in small groups to measure the physical characteristics of the river’s channel. This included widths, depths, velocity of flow and analysis of the river’s load (the stones it has carried). Inevitably this required students to be working within the river itself. Sites were chosen carefully to ensure the water was of a safe depth, but students rapidly had to adapt to working in water up to thigh-deep. This provided a novel change from spending the day sitting in classrooms. The measurements taken at the first site were quite time-consuming as students learned the fieldwork techniques that they had never previously used. Having completed one site, the students moved downstream and repeated the process at three other sites. This will then allow them to analyse any changes that occur along the river’s course. As the day progressed, students became more confident and efficient with their data collection, with certain students managing their groups like a military operation! The weather was extremely kind to us on both days, with unbroken sunshine on the second day. This certainly makes for a more enjoyable fieldwork experience – and for the two students who got a little wetter than anticipated was a blessed relief. Students will now spend the rest of this term presenting, interpreting and evaluating their data during their geography lessons so that the whole Controlled Assessment will be completed before the summer holiday.

Arts’ Department News GCSE Drama Performance Examination The final performance examination for the GCSE Drama course takes place on 21 st May. This involves small groups of students performing chosen extracts from published plays to an external examiner. The performance examination is worth 40% of the overall marks and can therefore make a significant difference to the final outcome for each student. Throughout the second week of the Easter Holiday Miss Davis worked with separate groups in developing their performance pieces. This intervention has taken place every year for the past eight years and can make the difference of one whole grade band improvement for each student. Arts Technical Team The student technical team, under the leadership of Mr Clarke our Theatre Manager, have been involved in many extended day activities and Acts of Collective Worship throughout this year. They take on roles of responsibility including all technical aspects of Acts of Collective Worship, presentations in the College Theatre, supporting in performances and many other activities. In order to accredit their work Mr Clarke is guiding them through the completion of a Silver Arts Award qualification. Much of the work they already do can be used towards the building of an evidence portfolio and in demonstrating their commitment and leadership skills. Artsmark Gold Application It is our time to reapply for Artsmark Gold status and the application has recently been submitted to Trinity College in London who now oversee the award. We await their response and can expect a visit from the Artsmark Assessor in either late July or early September. Arts Connect West Midlands Our role as a Hub School for Arts Connect West Midlands continues to develop. We have now been invited to take part in a consultation aimed at defining a young person’s experience of the arts at school with the West Midlands Region. Mr Plant will attend the first of four meetings on 14th May along with cultural organisations and representatives from schools from around the region. CarnaudMetalbox: We have been extremely lucky over the past years to receive generous levels of funding from CarnaudMetalbox Engineering Ltd. Each year the company invites a number of schools to submit bids towards the purchase of equipment, the aim of which is to support the learning of students in a way that will prepare them for the world of work in later life. Over the past eight years our bids have always been successful and we have managed to secure an impressive range of technology to support many different curriculum areas in the school. This has included Apple iPad’s for the Maths and Performing Arts Departments, sound recording equipment for Music, digital cameras for use across the school, animation software, printing presses and digital projectors in Art and computerised sewing machines in Design and Technology. In April we were pleased to welcome Trustees of the CarnaudMetalbox Benevolent Fund Committee, including its Chair Andy Kaye (to left of the picture) and Richard Jenkins (to right of the picture), on a visit to Bishop Perowne in order to see how the funding was being used to support our students. During the visit Andy and Richard spoke to both staff and students about the innovative and successful ways in which the funding had been used and saw many instances of work produced by students using the equipment purchased. They were able to immerse themselves in an imaginary world of green screen technology in our film and video studio, listen to a rock band, admire intricate creations from our laser cutter in Design and Technology, see prints and photographs in the John Bailey Art Gallery and have iPad applications in mathematics demonstrated by our students. We have now been invited to submit a bid for the 2014 – 2015 round of funding which we intend to focus on the Design and technology Department. Mr Plant is working with the department to compile a successful bid.

Arts’ Department News continued …. Shakespeare Schools Festival Bishop Perowne students performed in the Shakespeare Schools Festival, at the Artrix Theatre in Bromsgrove, for five years in a row deciding to pursue other ventures for a period of time. In 2015 we will return to the Festival and are now making decisions about which play we will choose for our production. Auditions will take place after the May half term and the performance will be October/November time in the next academic year.

Young Worcestershire Photographers Competition Bishop Perowne has again been successful in the annual Young Worcestershire Photographers Competition run by Beacon Camera Club in Malvern. Eight of our students photographs were selected as part of the top 50 in Worcestershire. In the presentation that took place within College, Emily Studholme in Year 11 was also selected as a runner up in the upper secondary division - a fantastic achievement given that this age group includes students up to the age of 18. Dancers Achieve Dance Leadership Level 1: The present Yr 10 GCSE Dance students have just been awarded their Dance Leadership Level 1 by the Sports Council. ACE Dance Group: ACE welcomes Claire Wood from DanceFest for the Spring and Summer term. Claire will be working with the Gifted and Talented group towards a performance piece for the Artrix Schools performance on the 7th July and the Colleges own Summer Dance Show. In May Ace will work with Rachael Alexander from Worcester 6th Form on the Symphony Hall project. The students will have the opportunity to dance to live music provided by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as well as perform a flash mob in the interval. On the 12th July Ace will perform at the Malvern Carnival as part of the Big Dance Week – a national project in conjunction with Dance Fest. They will perform a piece of work called Site seers which is currently being choreographed by Claire Woods and the students. GCSE Dance Year 11 Moderation: Yr 11 GCSE dancers have completed a successful moderation where approximately thirty examination pieces were examined by an external examiner. The students completed additional rehearsals and one to one tutorials over the Easter holidays in preparation for this examination. The moderated work accounts for 80% of the student’s final marks. Summer Dance Show: This year’s summer dance show will be part of the Big Dance Week and will provide the Year 9 Dance Leaders the opportunity to showcase their new choreographies and complete their Dance Leadership Award.

Arts’ Department News continued …. Worcester Dance Festival Bishop Perowne hosted and organised this year’s Worcester Dance Festival for the Worcester Dance teachers Association and Dancefest. Yr 9 Dance Leaders who completed their module of working in the community lead warm ups for approximately three hundred gusts and staff form primary, secondary schools from across the city. The festivals were well received and enjoyed by all with excellent feedback being given to Miss Alexander at the recent Worcester Dance teachers meeting. As well as organising and running the festival Bishop Perowne Students also performed a range of work from solos to small group pieces. It was especially pleasing to see two former Wireboyz performing their As Level dance work based on Akram Khans work. As a result of the success of this year’s festival Bishop Perowne has been asked to host and run the festival next year. Rock School The Year 11 Rock School group performed their end of course gig to a relatively small audience on Thursday 8th May. They performed admirably, really demonstrating their progress over the three years that they have studied the course. It was a fitting end to an enjoyable performance option. Glass Art Workshops The highly successful and very well attended Glass Art workshops are continuing on Saturday mornings – the most recent being on Sat 1st February and Saturday 22nd March. St John’s Library Photography Competition The St Johns Library in Worcester held a photography competition using the theme of ‘Worcester City’ and ‘local wildlife’. The following students from Bishop Perowne Church of England College submitted photos: Imogen Watterson Hannah Finn Georgia Robinson Molly Robinson Kiera Lewis Both Kiera and Hannah were both runners up. Artist Workshops Bishop Perowne were successful in a bid from Voices and Visions (who received funding from NADFAS) to run two Portrait workshops with the artist, John Denaro. John has worked with two groups of Year 10 students, whose work will be exhibited in the Voices and Visions exhibition in the Cathedral. Both workshops were fantastic, the students learnt so much from John and produced some exceptional portraits all done to A1 size. Examples of the students portraits can be seen on the Colleges website. Primary and Secondary Art Competition Again, this year, Bishop Perowne Church of England College will be launching their second Art competition, involving students at the College as well as pupils from local primary schools. Prizes will be awarded for the best work for each of the key stages, 1 - 4. The theme this year is 'Tradition', and students will be encouraged to interpret the theme in as creative a way as possible. Shortlisted entries will be exhibited in the John Bailey Gallery, with winners of each key stage being announced at the opening of the exhibition, the date of which will be announced shortly.

Arts’ Department News continued …. Music Evening An important date on the Arts calendar is the annual 'Evening of Music' in which students from all year groups in the school perform as singers, instrumentalists and members of the various bands and choirs that are active within College. This year the performance will take place on Thursday 19th June during which the College choir, jazz band, saxophone and clarinet ensembles and solo instrumentalists and vocalists will take part. The 'Evening of Music' is always well attended and we hope that you will be able to join us this year. Primary Music Festival A Primary Music Festival will take place on Thursday 3rd July in which primary schools will be invited to perform pieces of their own choice in order to make up an exciting programme of music and song. Students from Bishop Perowne will perform alongside the primary school students. Also Year 9 students will work with groups from both the primary schools and from Regency High on a unique and original piece for performance in the Festival. Media Studies - London Trip We are currently organising a trip to both the BBC Broadcasting House and a tour of Harry Potter World Studios on Friday, 27th June 2014. We have been given a student group reduction on some very good tickets. The cost of the visit including coach travel to and from London is £98.00 As part of the GCSE Media Studies course, students study both the television and film industry with a particular focus on how organisations such as the BBC operate. This will be an excellent opportunity to have a ‘behind the scenes’ experience of established television and film companies.

Wireboyz Dance Group The Wireboyz Dance group came together, with four other boys dance groups, to create an hour long performance called ‘Our Brave Boys’, which they presented to a packed audience of parents, carers, family and friends at the Kings School College Hall on Saturday 5th April at 7.30pm. The commemorative piece, which took seven weeks to create, was devised by the Artistic Director of the Boys Dancing Association Dave McKenna. The theme of the work was an exploration of the powerfully emotive stories of the young men who went to fight in the First World War. During the evening the Wireboyz danced with students from Regency High School, Nunnery Wood High School, Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre and the University of Worcester. All involved performed with enthusiasm and commitment and received a great deal of positive feedback from their audience including “an amazing performance” and “incredibly powerful”. The boys then followed this up with an equally impressive performance of the piece at the Mayor of Worcester’s Youth Gala charity event at the Guildhall on Saturday 3rd May. Wireboyz have been invited to perform their version of Our Brave Sons at the Schools Showcase at the Artix on the 7th July along side Ace.

Arts’ Department News continued …. Successes of current and former Bishop Perowne students Emily May Emily May who studied both Dance and Drama at Bishop Perowne before moving to Worcester Sixth Form has been recently awarded a place at the prestigious Laban Centre to study Dance at Degree level. This is the fulfilment of a long held ambition. Bourne To Act Laurence Bourne left Bishop Perowne College in 2008 with a long list of GCSE qualifications including Drama. Since then he has worked with many different theatre companies and drama groups performing in a wide variety of dramatic styles. He now has a long list of credits to his name and these include the lead role in 'Macbeth', Alfie Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady', Snowball in 'Animal Farm', Inspector Javert in 'Les Miserable' and many others. Determined to succeed, Laurence has also progressed his education in the arts since leaving Bishop Perowne. In 2011 he graduated from Bromsgrove New College with a Foundation Degree in Theatre in Community, from the University of Cumbria in 2014 with a BA Hons Degree in Drama and has recently been accepted at the East 15 Drama school in London to study for an MA Degree in Acting. Laurence generously attributes much of his success to his experiences and the opportunities he had at Bishop Perowne College. His performance as The Porter in 'Macbeth' was most definitely one of the defining moments of our College productions in recent years and we are extremely proud of everything he has achieved since. Matthew Parkinson - National Youth Theatre Success Matt Parkinson left Bishop Perowne in 2013 having appeared in many of the College productions including ‘Hairspray’, ‘TheTempest’ and ‘Wind In The Willows’. He then went on to Worcester Sixth Form to study Drama and Performing Arts where he has appeared in many more productions. Alongside his studies Matt continued to take up on every possible performance opportunity, appearing in 'The Little Shop of Horrors' at Malvern Theatre in 2012 as a member of the Malvern Theatre Young Company and it was here that he learned of an opportunity to audition for the National Youth Theatre. Matt soon found himself auditioning for the National Youth Theatre and going through the exciting and challenging process of a whole day of workshops, performances, interviews and individual auditions. He has recently found out that, much to both he and our delight, that he was successful in getting one of the 568 places on offer when 4800 people had auditioned. He will now take part in a two week intensive course at Trinity Laban in London which, historically, has launched the careers of such performers as Helen Mirren and Matt Smith, aka Dr Who. Imogen Tingle: Current Year 11 student Imogen Tingle has been awarded a place at the Royal Academy of Dance in Battersea, London to study A level Dance. This is quite an achievement because the Academy is a prestigious establishment to which the entry requirements are demanding.

Music Department News Three Counties Show I have the great pleasure of announcing that the music department have once again been invited to perform at the Diocesan tent during the Three Counties Show on Friday 13th June. This is a great honour and on that we relish. We are taking a group of Year 10 students who will perform A Capella versions of a number of popular songs. Hopefully with weather will be kind to us but nothing will dampen our enthusiasm for this performance!

Maths Breakfast Club Maths Breakfast club has been running since Christmas for Year 11 students to do some extra revision for their forthcoming examinations. It has been really successful with up to 30 students attending each day. They have been treated to breakfast goodies such as toast and preserves, pain au chocolate, croissants and honey and fresh orange juice whilst they work. Due to its success, the club will run for present Year 10 students in the run up to their examinations. Look out for more information on a start date. Mr Varey

IT Department News Ignite – Young Enterprise Team—Regional Finalists Having achieved well across all the areas of Young Enterprise competition - trade fairs, company reports and knowledge of our product we were invited to the regional finals at Malvern St James, Tuesday 29th March. The evening involved us setting up our trade stand, presenting to a team of judges and our fellow Young Enterprise students. It was a long evening and despite our best attempts we were unsuccessful in securing an award or invitation to the area final. We are still really proud of our achievements and have learnt so much along our journey; it has certainly been an experience we will never forget.

We have now liquidated our company ‘Ignite’ and are pleased to announce that we are in a position to pay back our shareholders with an extra dividend for their investment. We would like to thank all our investors for their support throughout our year of trading and for placing their money in our capable hands. To truly reflect the world of business and after much discussion it has been decided that our hard work would be rewarded through the payment of a salary. Some students have also been issued with a bonus to reflect their level of commitment to the company. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our shareholders and our link teacher Mrs Morris. Thanks also to Mr Hewson and Mr Box for their help and support with the making of the ‘slumped bottles’.

Citizenship Students have started their controlled assessment this term. This started with an interesting presentation from Sharon van Antwerpen the Support and Development Co-Coordinator from St Pauls Hostel. Students will now research homelessness as a topical issue and present ideas through an active means. This allows students the opportunity to work with other agencies work together and participate in whole school action. We look forward to seeing the outcome.

History Department News A personal experience of the holocaust. When one of my students in year 8 told me that he had relatives who had been victims of the holocaust and a Grandfather who had escaped Nazi persecution, I felt that my year 8 history group should all learn about this very personal experience. The holocaust is one of the most tragic events of the last century and something that all students should be taught about. On Wednesday the 14th May, as part of the unit of work on the holocaust, 8R learnt about the Kindertransport, a train to Britain from Nazi occupied lands which saved 10,000 Jewish children from the horrors of the camps. Students learned about how parents of children when they were forced to say "goodbye" to their children to give them a chance at life. They empathised with the children who came to Britain, some of whom were very lucky and others who were forced to change their religion and lose their culture. Students in year 8 will continue to study the holocaust looking at the treatment of Jews who unfortunately could not escape from the Nazis. Jakob Terry's Grandfather is a true survivor and an inspiration as someone who escaped the Nazis at a very young age and was able to make a new life for himself in England. His story is below. "My Grandad was one of 10,000 Jewish children to come to Britain on the Kindertransport. He was born in Vienna, Austria where he lived until he left aged 11. He travelled from the Hook of Holland to Harwich in England. "Emotions were mixed as he left Austria. He managed to find a place on the Kindertransport without the help or support of his parents who were too stressed out and busy during the Nazi occupation as Hitler was making life increasingly difficult for Jews. He understood that it was important for his survival to leave Austria. By chance, a stranger helped him to achieve a place on the Kindertransport. This random act of kindness is what saved his life. "In memoirs he left he described the one day trip in two parts. From Vienna to the Hook of Holland and then on a ship to Britain. He was the last to be picked by an English family. He was sat in a hall watching other children be selected by families who wanted them. He left the room to obtain some food and drink and on his return the hall was empty. Fortunately, a lady arrived and he was taken to her house in a chauffeured car. "Unfortunately, things in Austria were getting worse and his parents were shot at the post in by the Nazis. My Grandad never saw his family again but settled in England permanently." Jakob Terry

Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance On Tuesday 29th April as part of the Bishop Perowne Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance programme a number of Year Ten students visited an apprenticeship workshop at Redditch Town Hall. The purpose of the event was to allow those students who are considering applying for an apprenticeship the opportunity to meet local employers and apprenticeship advisors. Bishop Perowne students were able to discuss a range of careers available to them in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects. The students greatly enjoyed the opportunity as they were allowed to ride on a Harley Davidson (through green screen technology of course!), wire up an electric circuit for Worcester Bosch and design a new car for Morgan. In addition they were able to discuss the range of careers available at Yamazaki Mazak one of the Colleges partners. The event certainly gave the students a lot to consider and opened up a number of possibilities for their post 16 options. Mrs Reeve-McKew

This is to be assessed to see if she is good enough to move up a level from County to Regional so is quite important. She is also playing at the National Finals on Sunday in Wakefield so a busy weekend for her. Yr4 Tri Golf Festival Bishop Perowne College invited year 4 children from St Barnabas, St Georges, Northwick Manor, and Claines Primary Schools to take part in a golf festival held at Raven Meadow Golf Club. This is a fantastic setting and a great opportunity for the children to experience playing golf on a par 3 golf course. The College provided 16 young leaders from Year 9 and 11 to run the event. There were 8 holes set up and the children were in teams of 6. After completing each hole they recorded their team score. They had experience of putting chipping and driving to meet the challenge on each hole. Apart from the emphasis being on participation and fun we were also looking for the best boys team and the best girls team to represent Droitwich and Worcester at the School Games to be held in Bromsgrove in June Congratulations to St Georges who had both the winning boys and girls team. It was the first time they have won this event and good luck to them in the School Game. As a reward all the children they were given special Bookmarks from the College to keep. Thank you to the following who were good role models and great leaders Alex Brown, Charlie Burton, Dan Coleburn, Vvladan Duric, Ike Fallon-Wilson,, Harry Green, Scott Johnson, Luke Molloy, Luke Moreton, Taylor Pugh . Welland FC As some of you may already know, I play football every Saturday for a local amateur football team called Welland FC. Our club won a draw for teams affected by the flood weather this season as part of the Barclay's 'Thank You' scheme and were given the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a professional footballer. On Thursday 8th May, our team arrived at Villa Park in Birmingham to play against another amateur side, Premier United FC. We changed in the home changing rooms, walked through the tunnel and played a 90 minute football match on the hallowed turf. I even managed to score a goal at the Holte End! Our club received an Aston Villa shirt signed by the team and all were unanimous in their gratitude to Barclays for providing amateur clubs with such a unique opportunity. My thanks go to Ms Farr and the governors for enabling me to experience an unbelievable day and fulfill a childhood dream to play at a professional premier league club - I hope that one day some of our budding football stars manage to replicate my experience! School Cap In January the PE Department introduced a new policy in recognition of our students who represent the school on a regular basis. In the calendar year the students were targeted to make either 10 or 20 appearances for the School. If the students make 10 appearance they win a school cap, if they make 20 they are awarded with a t-shirt to recognise this honour. All of the students will also have their names entered onto the roll of honour board. At present we have 7 students who have achieved 10 appearances for the school, which is fantastic considering it is only early May!
