Plus much more ………..

Kiera Lewis—Year 9

Message from the Headteacher I know it is nearly the end of term when our College becomes even busier than usual. Trips to the ‘Think Tank’, West Midlands Safari Park, The Cinema, Euro Disney… a walk across the Malvern Hills… making rockets and cosmetics, puppets and mosaics, armour and masks, a dance show… sports challenges and code breaking… these and so many more activities made our Annual Arts’ week a resounding success. The week began with a most enjoyable sports day in which a record number of students participated, College records were broken and Tilley emerged as the overall winners. For the first time this year, members of our College Council organised a fete in which every tutor group ran a stall in order to further develop community spirit, raise money for charity and encourage healthy competition. Our ‘secret shoppers’ nominated Miss Alexander’s stall as the best presented and Mr Varey’s group for the best customer service. Over £400 was raised in forty minutes on over forty stalls with students enjoying a penalty shoot out, a barbeque, a complimentary ice-cream, “the stocks”, and the legendary maggot racing. At the end of the afternoon it was agreed that a new Bishop Perowne tradition had been born. Throughout June the whole College sat exams with Year 11 completing their GCSE’s in usual impeccable style, showing commitment to achieving the best possible results. Staff at the Cricket Club complemented them at their Leavers Ball for their outstanding camaraderie, good conduct and good manners. We wish them well for the future and look forward to receiving their results in August. Our Annual awards ceremony, which was held in June, was a real family celebration in which credit was given for steadfast effort and progress. We were grateful to Captain Rick Tett for presenting the certificates and offering a most thought provoking address. The students who have come top in the recent examination will be rewarded in the first week of term. We are very proud of our students’ achievements.

Message from the Headteacher continued …. A real highlight of the term has been our re-designation as an Arts’ Mark Gold School. In addition, we have been designated as one of two schools nationally deemed to be centres of excellence. Our term will end with a Eucharist and community celebration assemblies. We will say goodbye to Mrs Thompson who has offered outstanding service during the past twenty five years. We wish her the happiness she so richly deserves. Mr Clarke, Miss Griffiths, Miss Mehbob, Miss Morris and Miss Whitehall all move to new positions. We thank them for the contributions they have made to Bishop Perowne and wish them success in the future. I wish to thank parents, carers and all those who have given such generous support to our community. I greatly appreciate the dedication and experience of our staff who give unstintingly of their time to bring about the best for our students. I thank our students for making our College such a friendly, strong, purposeful community. During the summer, work will be carried out to replace our gas main and there will be much refurbishment around College including our library.

Go Forth into the World: Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold fast that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honour everyone; love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit I wish everyone a very happy and restful summer holiday.

Ms Farr – Headteacher

Ms Thompson’s Farewell It is very hard to believe I first stepped through the doors of Bishop Perowne over 25 years ago. My time here has been very rewarding and enjoyable. I started off as a Food Technology teacher but soon adapted to teach both Textiles and Child Development. I then went on to introduce GNVQ Health and Social Care before being responsible for bringing in more vocational courses including First Skills, Work Skills and ASDAN. More recently, my main area of responsibility has been Vocational Courses and KS4 Food Technology. I have been lucky to work with some colleagues who are both fantastic company and exceptional teachers. I will also take away fond memories of many fun activities with staff and students such as comic relief days, bake offs and many others. My roles as Assistant Head of Year and subsequently Head of Year also gave me the opportunity to work closely with the students and to help and see them develop. Bishops has always prided itself on giving its students opportunities for travel and enjoyment in the learning environment. I have great memories of some amazing school trips that you and your children may also treasure – from food trips to France to walks on the Malverns, from skiing in Austria to activities at Top Barn Farm – far too many to mention. This is the spirit of Bishops that I cherished and which I will look back on with great pride. I am also very grateful for the kind words expressed by my close colleagues and students. I wish all the staff and students continued success at Bishop Perowne.

Report from the Governors The Governing Body is very pleased to welcome three news governors this Summer Term. Mr David Kemp MBE has been appointed by the Worcester Diocesan Academies Trust (“WDAT”), Mr Martin Lilwall has been appointed as a Parent Governor and Captain Rick Tett has been appointed by Worcester East Deanery Chapter. We are sad to advise that Mrs Angela Deakin, appointed by the WDAT, will be stepping down as a governor with effect from the end of this term and we take this opportunity to thank her for the contribution she has made to the Governing Body over the past two years.

End of Academic Year Eucharist Music by Year 10 Acapella Group – Freddie Lockett and Jakob Terry

Welcome Presiding: The Revd. Christine Turpin Capt. Rick Tett Eucharist Assistants: Mrs Benita Pomeroy and Mrs Margaret Tuffley

Ms Farr, Headteacher, welcomes everyone to the service.

Prologue The Prologue is read We meet today at the beginning of our summer holidays our God-given holy days our time of Sabbath rest.

It is a time to recalibrate and recover a sense of meaning to life. A time to play, to explore to discover life in all its fullness; to behold the beauty of this world to enjoy the goodness of all that God has made.

For this is a season of rest of restoration of re-creation.

And in this Eucharist we meet in the name of God who leads us beside still waters who revives our soul who longs for us to learn the unforced rhythms of his grace.

Giving thanks and saying Sorry

Page 30

End of Academic Year Eucharist This reflective prayer is read O God, we give you thanks for your love for us, warm and brooding, which has brought us to birth and opened our eyes to the wonder and beauty of creation.

We give you thanks. for your love for us, wild and freeing, which has awakened us to the energy of creation: to the sap that flows, the blood that pulses, the heart that sings.

We give you thanks. for your love for us, compassionate and patient, which has carried us through our pain, wept beside us in our sin, and waited with us in our confusion.

We give you thanks. for your love for us, strong and challenging, which has called us to risk for you, asked for the best in us, and shown us how to serve.

O God we come to celebrate that your Holy Spirit is present deep within us, and at the heart of all life. Forgive us when we forget your gift of love made known to us in Jesus, and draw us into your presence. All

Amen.

The Collect The Theme Prayer for today is read by Thomas Maiden O God,

College Community

Page 31

End of Academic Year Eucharist We offer this time of holiday as it opens before us: Invest its ideas with your energy; its events with your possibilities; its encounters with your presence; that in it heaven and earth may collide and your Kingdom come. All

(© Pat Bennett from Bare Feet and Buttercups) The Reading

Joseph Long reads from The Message: Genesis Chapter 2, verses 1-3

Heaven and Earth were finished, down to the last detail. By the seventh day God had finished his work. On the seventh day he rested from all his work. God blessed the seventh day. He made it a Holy Day Because on that day he rested from his work, all the creating God had done.

The Gospel Reading

Katie Hawkins reads from The Message: Matthew Chapter 11, verses 28-30

Jesus said “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest.

The Prayer The prayers are led by Imogen Fraser-Clark, George Fuller, Jamie Williams

Loving God, we hold in your healing presence those who suffer pain and ill-health, with their families, friends and those who care for them:

We pray especially at this time for Denise Inge (the wife of the Bishop of Worcester) as she undergoes treatment for cancer…

… May all who suffer know the deep peace of Christ.

Loving God, we hold in your healing presence the suffering people of our world, and the places where people are experiencing division, injustice and violence: …

… May they know the deep peace of Christ.

Loving God, we hold in your healing presence those struggling to overcome addiction or abuse, those supporting and working with them, and all whose suffering has distanced them from those who love: …

End of Academic Year Eucharist … May they know the deep peace of Christ.

Loving God, we hold in your healing presence those facing bereavement. We also pray for those who have died: …

… May they know the deep peace of Christ.

Loving God, we give you thanks for health restored and prayers answered: … We hold in your healing presence and peace those whose needs are not known to us: …

And those whose names we do not know, but who are known to you, and for whom we have been asked to pray.

And we name in our hearts those who are close to us. … May they know the deep peace of Christ. May your wisdom, God, guide nurses, doctors and those who

work in every part of our Health Service

and across the world. We pray also for those who work in the coastguard, rescue and emergency services.

God in the midst, come close to us, and help us come close to you, as, for a fraction of time, we step back from the activities of the day. May we treasure such moments with you. Moments when we can bring to you the things we are doing, and find new meaning for them, and new strength for doing them. And moments for recalling

The Peace

After a short introduction by a minister, as the Christian Family gathered to meet with God, we welcome each other with a handshake and by exchanging the words “Peace be with you”

In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The Peace of the Lord be always with you. All

And also with you.

The Offertory

The altar is made ready with the bread and wine. Bethany Whitworth will assist the preparation.

The Communion Prayer

The prayer is introduced with the following exchange: The Lord be with you All

And also with you

All

It is right to give thanks and praise

Lord of all life, you created the universe, where all living things reflect your glory. You give us this great and beautiful earth, to discover and to cherish.

You give us sun and moon and star-lit sky, everything that gives us light, light for our eyes, our hearts, our minds.

You made us all, each wonderfully different, to join with the angels and sing your praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, All

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

All

God of power and might, heaven and earth are full

All

End of Academic Year Eucharist We thank you, loving Father, because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son. He gave his life for us on the cross and shows us the way to live.

Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us Christ's body and his blood.

Great is the mystery of faith: All

Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

On the night before he died, when darkness had fallen, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying: 'This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me.'

After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying: 'This is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins.'

So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life. As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit, and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Saviour.

Help us, Father, to love one another,

End of Academic Year Eucharist as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended, and all creation is gathered in your loving arms.

And now with [N and] all your saints we give you glory, through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit, today and for ever. All

Amen.

The Minister then introduces the Lord’s Prayer then says the opening words “Our Father who art in Heaven” and all are invited to join in the rest of the prayer.

The bread is broken for sharing, with the following words: We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ All

Though we are many we are one body For we all share in the one bread

All are then invited take communion or to come forward for a Blessing during which a selection of music will be shared The following words of invitation might be used The table of bread and wine is now to be made ready. It is the table of company with Jesus, and all who love him. So come to this table, you who have much faith and you who would like to have more; you who have been here often and you who have not been for a long time; you who have tried to follow Jesus, and you who have failed; Come. It is Christ who invites us to meet him here.

This prayer of blessing is said. May you enter trustingly into this sabbath space May you enter quietly into this sabbath rest

Page 38

End of Academic Year Eucharist May you enter joyfully into this sabbath play Let your body unfold in this sabbath Let your mind unwind into this sabbath Let your spirit expand into this Sabbath

May it reveal its secrets to you gently May it embody its truth in you authentically May it release new life in you abundantly So go with gladness into this Sabbath Go with gratitude into this sabbath And may the God who rests on the sabbath look at his labours in you and proclaim, ‘It is very good.’

Dismissal Ms Farr, Headteacher, Go forth into the World.

Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold fast that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honour everyone; love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit

Year 5 Subject Taster Days at Bishop Perowne Year 5 students from our local primary schools have been experiencing life at Bishop Perowne Church of England College during June and July. Students were invited to participate in Subject Taster Days when thirty lucky pupils from a range of primaries had the chance to spend a whole day studying a subject in which they had already demonstrated a particular aptitude at their current primary schools. The subjects offered included: English, Maths, Science, Performing Arts, ICT and PE. There was also a day in a skill which is strongly encouraged at our College, Leadership. All the days were well attended and the students left with smiles and with many feeling inspired to further their study of the particular subject. Following the Subject Days were the Curriculum Taster Days where whole classes of Year 5’s have been attending and enjoying an experience of a typical day at our College. Each of the days began with an Act of Collective Worship which included many of the children taking roles in a performance of Romeo and Juliet. I would like to thank the Year 8 musicians who also performed during these services. Having witnessed first hand how our Church Ethos is central to our community, the students moved off to follow a timetable of various lessons for the day. Many of the primary school students reported being very impressed by our facilities including the astro-turf which many were able to enjoy during a lunchtime game of football. Students were also enamoured with our Canteen, particularly the Northwick students who were lucky enough to come on Friday, chip day! I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Year 5’s who have visited us every good fortune with their future studies and hope to see many of them next year for our Induction Day.

Boris’ Blog: The School’s Golden Retriever Hi everybody Boris here! We have had a very exciting half term meeting all the new boys and girls coming up to Bishop Perowne in September. Starting a new school can be very exciting and nervous too. I remember my first day I was very nervous but all the teachers and students were very lovely and kind to me. I have just had my photo taken for the newspaper. This was fun. I think I am becoming famous and might even enter Britain's Got Talent! I am convinced I would win a tail wagging contest. At the moment I am trying not to eat too many snacks because I need to stay fit and healthy . One of my favourite things is going out for my walks with the students, I look forward to this everyday. The school is a hub of excitement this week, with Arts week and I might get more walks! The summer holidays are nearly here and I am looking forward to my holidays and spending time with my family, but I will miss everyone at school and I can’t wait to see everyone again in September. Love Boris

Science Technology Engineer Mathematics Specialist Engineering developments Next September we start our first Engineering GCSE course .Work is currently in progress to convert room C3 in the Clent building into a bespoke CAD/CAM facility to be used by next year’s inaugural group of Engineering students. Along with other up-to-date technologies to enable the production of high quality work, the room will have 21 drawing / computer work stations, a laser, two 3D printers and at least two hand held 3D scanners. In September five students will be engaged on an exciting new venture with our partners Yamazaki Mazak UK ltd... They will complete a week’s work placement that has been linked with the opportunity to graduate on the industrial cadetship scheme. The industrial cadetship is a nationally recognised award run by the engineering development trust in response to a challenge by HRH the Prince of Wales to involve local communities in business and engineering. Later in September two different groups of engineering students will be involved in a ‘promotional gift’ design challenge set by Mazak. On completion, they will be invited to present their proposed solutions to a range of senior personnel at Mazak’s base in Blackpole.

STEM Club STEM club continues to be a popular extra curricular choice for students on a Thursday afternoon. Students from years 7-10 have attended on a weekly basis and been provided with experiments and investigations differentiated for their age and ability. Activities this half term have ranged from making and staining glass to making lava lamps, magic milk and water rockets. It has been nice to see STEM club grow as the academic year has progressed. I hope that next year even more students will consider attending this exciting extra curricular activity.

Design and Technology Department News—Lizzie Laser’s Blog One has moved…………… As one writes, a very nice man is cleaning my mirrors, aligning my tracking, and giving one a thoroughly good tune-up and overhaul. Something one can recommend. Since the decision to modify one’s room into a facility for future engineers, one’s position and outlook have been altered. Benches have been uprooted, turned around and re-wired; one’s washing facility has relocated to make way for a purpose built desk area accommodating 21 students’ computer stations and drawing boards. One has of course attempted to continue one’s invaluable work producing work for students as well as supporting Open Day/Evening recently, producing 108 awards for Year 11 students, special ‘Wedding Tags’ for a tutor’s forthcoming marriage, and cutting 200 rulers ready for new intake day. George and Georgiana have been engaged in printing ‘three dimensionally’ projects for students, demonstration pieces during Open Day/Evening, and test pieces for future projects. One had hoped to announce the arrival, synchronization, and successful configuration of two new additions to the family – 3D scanners. One finds it a demanding concept that an item could be placed on a turntable, where lasers and cameras capture the image, and create a drawing capable of being produced on a 3D printer. Alas, software and computer hardware issues have resulted in the new arrivals being kept in their boxes until the issues can be resolved.

May the summer recess, like one’s service invigorate everyone . ‘Lizzie’ the Laser Cutter

IT Department News IT/Computing Update We say goodbye to Ms Mehbob who has found a teaching position in a school in Sandwell. We wish her good luck as she continues to progress in her teaching career. We say a warm welcome to Mr Leyland as the new Second in Charge of IT/Computing, he joins from a school in Alcester. Having been a head of department now for over 6 years we welcome his ideas and energy into the rapidly changing IT curriculum. The ICT department have been busy preparing for the new exciting Computing curriculum that becomes statutory from September 2014. Our students will be introduced to a range of new units to comply with the programmes of study. These units will include many more opportunities to explore programming from a visual perspective (Scratch and Kodu) as well as a textual one (Small Basic and Python). This will give students an excellent understanding of the concepts of computational thinking and allow them to experience some of the activities involved in the GCSE Computing course. 15 Year 9 students studying OCR Cambridge Nationals and the OCR Computing course attended the annual Jaguar Land Rover visit to Gaydon. The highlight of the day was the 4x4 off-road experience. As September approaches we look forward to re-igniting the successful Raspberry Pi Club and continue our links with the STEM advisor Ben Rawles from Malvern.com We have already secured 14 new Year 7 student places on the up and coming Next Generation Innovators at the Malvern Festival of Innovation on Thursday 2nd October at the Three Counties Showground. Students will have hands-on access to Raspberry Pi’s and a cyber security workshop. Last year the 7 students attending walked away with their own Raspberry Pi (worth over £50 each). This year the event also incorporates Geek-Chic which encourages females to take a more active role within engineering and programming. Watch out for news of this event early in the new term. Other successful visits/events we have ran this year and intend to offer again include the Bletchley Park codes and ciphers workshop, Land Rover Jaguar , Cyber Security/Safer Internet Day and the Big Bang Fair (March 2015). Watch out for another busy and fun packed year from the IT/Computing department.

Arts’ Department News Three Counties Show: Diocesan Link The College was asked by the Diocese to provide some musical entertainment at their tent at the Three Counties Show on June 13th. Fourteen Year 10 students, who make up the Acapella group sang to an audience of increasing size on a glorious morning. They performed their own arrangement of Demons by Imagine Dragons as well as Trouble and Royals. In between some students performed vocal solos to entertain the public. The Three Counties Show visitors were extremely complimentary towards our performers and the students acted as exceptional ambassadors for the college.

Bishop Perowne Students exhibit in the 12th National Students’ Art Exhibition in London Leigh Hewitt and Katy Fellows in Year 11 have both had their work accepted for submission for the 12th National Students’ Exhibition. This opened on Tuesday 8th July until Saturday 12th July in the Mall Galleries in London. This exhibition is under the patronage of the Royal Society of British Artists, and it is a significant achievement to have had two students have their work exhibited. The exhibition was opened by Simon Dalglish, Group Commercial Director of ITV. This has also been the fifth year in a row that Bishop Perowne Church of England College has successfully had work exhibited at this prestigious event.

Arts’ Department News Bishop Perowne Art Competition 2014 Bishop Perowne Church of England College has held its second annual Art Competition, following on from the success from last year. The competition theme this year was ‘Tradition’, and like last year, art work was invited from all year groups from Key Stage 1, through to Key Stage 4, from all the local primary schools near Bishop Perowne Church of England College as well as students from our college. Entries for the competition were shortlisted, and then displayed in the John Bailey Gallery. On Tuesday 8 th July, the gallery was opened for this work to be seen, and for the announcement of the winners of each key stage. Mr Plant, Head of the Specialism, judged the competition this year, and found that it was even harder this time round. He said ‘the creativity of the work, the skill and competency of it was so high, it was incredibly difficult to decide on a winner – there could so easily have been several winners of each key stage.’ Mr Plant was able to make a decision, and at the event, the following were announced as the winners: Ellis Wearing for Key Stage 1, Abigail Meynell for Key Stage 2, Holly Glynn-Jackson for Key Stage 3, and Natasha de Castro Tree for Key Stage 4. Congratulations to all the winners, as well as to all those who submitted their work.

Arts’ Department News Bishop Perowne: One of only Two Centres of Excellence Nationally Arts Week Arts Week this year took place in the week beginning 7th July. As in previous years the week offers students a unique opportunity to take part in a wide range of Arts activities and to develop practical skills which will support their curriculum studies. This year departments within the College ran an impressive range of activities from Bottle Rockets to Possums and Poets as well as the more Science based activities such as the making of Cosmetics. Visiting professional artists also make up a huge part of the Arts Week timetable and this year we are pleased to welcome a large number of new artists who have not worked with our students before. The artists include Hereford College of Arts running ariel dance workshops, site specific drama in the English Quad, Russel Foskit delivering Aikido Marshall Arts workshops and The Sonia Sabri Dance Company amongst many others. During the week there are also many outward bound trips offering students the chance to enjoy new and exciting experiences. This year students went on trips to Disneyland in Paris, The Think Tank Science Museum in Bristol, the West Midlands Safari Park and the Vue Cinema in Worcester. Highly praised as an outstanding event by the Artsmark Gold assessors the planning for next year had already begun before the Arts Week 2014 was even over. Vamos On the 15th July Vamos Theatre Company, with whom the College has a long standing and enormously successful partnership, will perform their latest production 'The Projectionist' in the Bishop Perowne Theatre. The performance has been developed by the Vamos Young People's Theatre of which two of our Year 10 students are members. On the 15th July their audience will be made up of Year 7 Bishop Perowne students and also students from three of our partner primary schools. The year 7 students who will see the performance have also been on a tour of an exhibition at the Worcester Arts Workshop where Vamos are based. The exhibition was an exciting, interactive and dynamic experience made up of the research for the background to the show and the props, masks and costumes that will be used in the performance. An exploration of cinema in the 1960s this gave our students the opportunity to be immersed in a different and historical world, trying on the masks and costumes and being able to actually use a 1960s cinema projector, to sit in cinema seats from that time in history and to feel the atmosphere of going to see a film almost sixty years ago. Alice In Wonderland On Tuesday 8th July Uncontained Arts who are based at the University of Derby twice performed their version of Alice in Wonderland in the Bishop Perowne Theatre. An exciting and innovative interpretation of the well known story the production used many techniques which are studied by students in the Performing Arts curriculum including physical theatre, puppetry and music. All of these, combined with stunning performances from the company, resulted in an enjoyable and memorable experience for the audiences.

Arts’ Department News The show was seen in the morning by all of our Year 7 students and those in our Specialist Intake Group from years 7,8,9 and 10. In the afternoon it was performed to more than two hundred students from three of our primary partner schools. Good Luck Mr Clarke and Welcome to Mr Steelefox After three years in his role as Theatre Manager Mr Clarke is leaving Bishop Perowne to take up a new career training as a primary school teacher. During his time at the College Mr Clarke has made an invaluable contribution not only to the Performing and Visual Arts but across the entire College. He has supported us in the development of the Apple Mac music suites, the green screen studio and many other projects. His expertise in lighting, sound and all things to do with the technical aspects of theatre, has resulted in some spectacular productions such as 'Wind In The Willows' when the entire theatre was converted into the Wild Wood and in one scene it actually snowed inside the Theatre. Over the years Mr Clarke expanded his role and trained to be an Arts Award Assessor. As a result of this he recently took students from his highly successful student technical team through the Arts Award course and they succeeded in gaining the Silver Arts Award qualification. Mr Clarke will be greatly missed at Bishop Perowne but we are very pleased to welcome Mr SteeleFox, who will take over the role of Theatre Manager in September. Artsmark Gold Success: National Centre of Excellence In recognition of our outstanding practice in the Performing and Visual Arts, we have recently heard that our application for redesignation as an Artsmark Gold school has been successful. In her feedback the Artsmark Assessor said there was very little that she could say about how our arts provision could be improved and she complimented every aspect of the Performing and Visual Arts at Bishop Perowne. Over and above this success we have also been nominated as one of only two schools in the country who are recognised as a centre of excellence in the Artsmark Community and beyond. This is an enormous achievement and it is thanks to the dedication of the Arts staff and, most importantly, the commitment, enthusiasm and creative energies of our students. Arts Connect West Midlands As a part of our commitment to developing the cultural and arts offer to young people across the region, which forms part of our work as a hub school for West Midlands Arts Connect, we are now involved in a major project in collaboration with a Birmingham primary school and three different cultural providers. The project, called 'E-pic', a play on the word epic, is aimed at producing a cultural map on a route from Dudley, where the Moorlands Primary School is situated to our own town of Worcester. The project involves Moorland's Primary School, The Birmingham Hippodrome, Meadow Arts who are based in Shropshire and produce site specific art installations and of course Bishop Perowne. Ultimately another part of the project is to produce arts events such as performances, fine art installations and festivals, which can happen in various venues and locations along the route. It is an exciting and long term project which will bring together schools and cultural providers in a unique way. Musical Production of Grease Auditions for our latest production took place in the beginning of July and, although the cast and dates for the performance have not yet been finalised, it is already shaping up to be an exciting and memorable show. In September there will be further auditions to give our new intake of Year 7 students an opportunity to play a role in the show. CarnaudMetalbox We are extremely lucky each year to be able to bid for funding from one of our industry sponsors CarnaudMetalbox. In past year we have been successful in bidding for equipment which has been used in many different departments from Mathematics to Fine Arts including Ipads, digital cameras and animation software.

College Community

Page 51

Arts’ Department News This year our bid was focused on the Design and Technology Department and I am pleased to say that we have once again been successful. As a result of this our students will now benefit from being able to use the latest technology for a variety of tasks and to build a range of both academic and vocational skills. Our successful bid included 3D scanners, A3 drawing boards, electronic sewing machines and a Janome 1000PCX which is a machine designed to give sewing and hems a totally professional and hard wearing finish. We thank CarnaudMetalbox for giving us the opportunity to bid for funding each year and for providing our students with such amazing equipment and opportunities. Young Worcestershire Photographers Competition Bishop Perowne has again been successful in the annual Young Worcestershire Photographers Competition run by Beacon Camera Club in Malvern. Eight of our students photographs were selected as part of the top 50 in Worcestershire. In the presentation that took place within College, Emily Studholme in Year 11 was also selected as a runner up in the upper secondary division - a fantastic achievement given that this age group includes students up to the age of 18. Silver Arts Awards Students at Bishop Perowne have the opportunity to gain a Silver Arts Awards either as a foundation course for their GCSE qualification or through their role in the student technical team. This year twenty-eight students gained their Silver Arts Award. The moderation took place on 3rd July and the examiners were extremely complimentary of the work produced. Several of the student folders have been requested for use in training Arts Award assessors as they demonstrated exactly what is required from students in order to fulfil the qualification. Summer Dance Show The annual dance show is one of the major events on the Performing Arts calendar each year. It show cases some of the creative, imaginative and dynamic energies of our students in terms of both dance and choreography. Students from all year groups performed in the show and present the audience with a range of dance styles from Tap to Contemporary. Some of the work performed has developed during lesson times as part of the Key Stage 3 and GCSE dance courses whilst others will be the result of extended day opportunities such as Wireboyz and Ace Dance Group. Our audience was treated to more than twenty-two different performances all of an extremely high standard. Music Evening An important date on the Arts calendar is the annual 'Evening of Music' in which students from all year groups in the school perform as singers, instrumentalists and members of the various bands and choirs that are active within College. This year the performance took place on the evening of June 17th and students performed to a packed audience of parents, carers, relatives and friends. During the evening some students performed in public for the first time whilst others, such as the experienced Acapella group, rounded off the evening and brought to a close a highly professional musical event. As a result of the evening £95 was raised in aid of St Richards Hospice and evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all both audience and performers. Media Studies - London Trip The Media Studies trip to BBC Broadcasting House and the Harry Potter Studios took place on Friday 27th June. As part of the GCSE Media Studies course, students study both the television and film industry with a particular focus on how organisations such as the BBC operate. This was an excellent opportunity to have a ‘behind the scenes’ experience of established television and film companies. The trip was led by Miss Davis and Mr Clarke and all had an excellent and memorable day.

Arts’ Department News SUCCESSES OF CURRENT AND FORMER STUDENTS Danielle Giblen - Reaching For The Stars Danielle, or Dani as she likes to be known, is a former student who, whilst at Bishop Perowne, achieved many things both academically and through her dedication and commitment to the Performing Arts. In her five years at College she took part in almost all of our productions including dance and acting roles such as Velma Von Tussle in Hairspray. Since leaving College Dani has continued to develop her arts skills and experience and gone on to even greater successes. She attributes much of this to her days at Bishop Perowne and says her progression to A levels and ultimately a degree, began during her school years. After school Dani went on to the Worcester Sixth Form where, as well as studying for A levels in Drama, Performing Arts and Mathematics, she continued to develop and hone her skills as a performer. She took leading roles in major productions such as Kim in Miss Saigon, Velma Kelly in Chicago and Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. Many of her performances have been seen by current students on College trips to the Sixth Form. During her time at the Sixth Form Dani won the Department Drama Award and, alongside her studies, continued to dance, taking part in the All England Dance Finals in London where she honours for her solos and medals for her trio and group work. Most recently Dani has had news of an equally impressive achievement in that she has gained a place, against stiff competition, at the Guildford School of Acting which is part of the University of Surrey and has an internationally acclaimed reputation for high quality training in the Performing Arts. As part of the audition process Dani had to sing solo, dance and take part in acting sessions, under the watchful eye of Michael Moor, the Head of the BA (Hons) Acting course. Dani's course begins on September 29th and at the end of it she will graduate with a BA Honours Degree in Musical Theatre. We wish Dani all the very best for the future and for what we are sure is going to be a long and immensely successful career in the Performing Arts. Wireboyz at Moreland Primary School As part of our Performing Arts hub status, Wireboyz were asked to travel to Morelands Primary School in Birmingham to perform but also lead a workshop to kick start preparations for the school’s annual Yr 6 production “Move It”. The students lead a street dance styled workshop for approximately thirty students from Morelands Primary and aimed to create a short dance in an afternoon. Armed with their lesson plans and notes the boys each took on a group of Yr 6 students to teach and organise before bring the workshop together to perform a dance off. The school had originally asked us to visit to try and encourage their boys to participate in dance. With very tentative step s to begin with and some admiring points and murmurs the Yr 6 boys were encapsulated. By the end of the afternoon the accompanying staff was amazed at the skills Wireboyz had been able to bring out of Yr 6. Feedback from the primary school came in positive praise for Wireboyz who were told “I know the children loved it” and “The workshop was so much fun for them- your boys are very talented!” Wireboyz and the National Lottery Wireboyz have been very busy this year and it’s paid off. Our recent project “Our Brave Sons” with the Boys Dancing Association has some big news. Our film is now public and can be seen using the following link http://vimeo.com/mathewbeckett/ourbravesons. But more importantly we need your votes. Please read the following press release.. “Great news for the Arts in the region A West Midlands dance project has made it to the finals of the National Lottery Awards – and it needs your votes! Boys Dancing was created to prove to boys that dance really is for them by giving them the chance to choreograph their own dance and perform it. Between 600 and 700 boys and young men per year get the opportunity to work with the project’s team of professional dancers, early career dancers and dance apprentices making new works of art for live and filmed performance. The project currently runs in 8 local authorities in the West Midlands with groups from schools, youth centres, pupil referral units and a prison. Our plans for the next two years is to expand into all 14 local authorities and 6 more across England. The National Lottery cash prize will help us do that.

Arts’ Week Arts week is one of the many major events on the Bishop Perowne College annual calendar. It is a week in which the entire College timetable is stood down and lessons are replaced with a wide range of arts related activities. These include a huge number of visiting professional artists who involve the students in practical workshops. This year we had activities ranging from Aikido classes to shadow puppetry, ariel dance, technical theatre, circus skills and the visual arts. As well as the visiting professionals staff at the College also created and delivered an exciting programme of workshops. These included the creation of bottle rockets, a QR code hunt, medieval crafts, mosaics, making cosmetics, interpreting literature through the creation of puppets, skin painting a Garageband Loop Off and even creating symbols of peace out of images of war. During the week there were also many outward bound trips that students were invited to take part in. This year they included a trip to Disneyland in Paris, the West Midlands Safari Park and the Think Tank science experience in Bristol. All our Year 7 students spent a gloriously sunny day walking the Malvern Hills and experienced their beauty and geology whilst others saw one of the latest releases at the Vue Cinema in Worcester. On the Thursday of Arts Week the activities continued on into the evening with our Summer Dance Show. This included students from all year groups performing in a range of dance styles from modern to contemporary. Student dance groups Ace, Wireboyz, Year 9 Dance Leaders and the Year 7 dance club performed a combination of work developed for their dance studies and some created specifically for the Dance show. Following Arts Week students, staff and visiting artists complete evaluations to indicate whether or not they felt the week was a success. The early returns of these suggest that all involved had a creative, exciting and imaginative experience and are already asking about Arts Week in 2015.

Arts’ Department News Granny’s Attic Return To Bishop Perowne. Granny’s Attic Folk Trio returned to Bishop Perowne on Wednesday 16th July to give a charity concert in aid of St Richard’s Hospice. This was a return for the three boys as they established Granny’s Attic during their time as students at the College. Before the concert the three boys George Sansome, Lewis Wood and Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, involved twenty of our students in a Folk workshop which was a dynamic and creative introduction to the rhythms and songs of the folk genre. In the evening our students performed alongside Granny’s Attic in several different numbers which had been developed as a result of the workshop. George, Lewis and Cohen all left Bishop Perowne in and since then have performed all around the country to great acclaim. In 2014 they were nominees for the BBC Young Folk Awards and have produced several difference CD and EP disks. The evening was attended by an audience of parents, carers, friends and family who sat in a café style auditorium in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Granny’s Attic performed a range of their established and new work while entertaining the audience with their energetic and flamboyant style. A total of £314.12 was raised in aid of St Richard’s Hospice through ticket donations and the sale of refreshments. A big thank you to all three of the boys, to our students who took part, to the staff who supported the event and, most of all, to our audience who showed their appreciation through rapturous applause and by generously donating to a charity that means so much to all of us.

Careers Information Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance update It has been another busy term in Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance. On the 2nd of July Year Ten visited the Worcester College of Technology where they experienced the various courses which were on offer there and also to gain a taste of what an education at the Technology College would be like. On the following day Year Ten went to the Worcester Sixth Form College to experience the different A Levels and other qualifications that are available. The students found both days interesting and varied. Year 9 had their Careers, Information, Advice and Guidance day on the 3rd of July. Year 9 met various local employers. We welcomed a number of guest speakers into Bishop Perowne including the Royal Institute of Surveyors, a Parliamentary assistant to Robin Walker, an accountant and the Merchant and also the Royal Navy. The students greatly enjoyed hearing about all of the various careers that are available to them once they have completed their GCSEs. In addition students all had the chance to use the online programme Kudos which enables students to enter in their likes and dislikes and then gives them a suggested list of possible careers to investigate,; this certainly opened up a new set of possibilities for the students. The next Bishop Perowne Careers Fair will take place on the 20th October. Please see our website for details.

Geography Department News: Geography Club Geography Club Volcanoes To finish of the year the students of Geography Club decided they wanted to create some erupting lava volcanoes. Students had to cook their own salt dough and design a volcano around a bottle. We took them outside to set them off and using a mix of baking powder, vinegar and food colouring we made them erupt! Zoe Vernon won the prize for the best volcano. Being inspired by a diary we read from a teenager who was in the Montserrat volcanic eruption and where the farm with its animals had to be abandoned; she decorated it with palm trees, clay animals and a mix of black and white dough to create a marble effect on her volcano. The students would like to do it again next year making bigger volcanoes out of papier-mâchÊ and different erupting recipes!

Trip to Disneyland Paris On Thursday 10th July 55 Bishop Perowne students travelled to Disney Land Paris. It was a long coach journey but it was worth the effort when we got there. The students had a fantastic couple of days at the parks. The key highlights on day one were the numerous trips up Space Mountain which proved to be a very popular ride indeed and also the Disney parade. Miles Watts actually managed to become part of the parade and had a cuddle and a dance with the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. Despite the rain the children and adults alike couldn’t help but smile at the magic that is Disney Land. On day two the sunshine came out to greet us as we arrived at the Disney Studios and there were a number of terrifying ride experiences throughout the day. Many students plucked up the courage to ride on the Tower of Terror! This proved to be both a scary and exhilarating ride as the elevator assistant did his utmost to create a frightening atmosphere before the descent. Other rides that proved popular were the Buzz Lightyear car ride and the Aerosmith Roller Coaster. Thanks to the fast passes everyone managed to have lots of turns on their favourite rides without having to queue for too long. Whilst at the studios there was also the opportunity to meet the Disney characters which proved to be a very popular experience with all of our students meeting Princess Aerial, Mickey Mouse, Stitch and many more. In the evening we then returned to the Disney Land Park for one last ride on the students’ favourite attractions (Space Mountain!). After this there was a visit to the Disney shop where students bought a memento of their visit. As we headed home to Worcester a quiet slumber descended as the students fell asleep all cuddling a soft toy version of their favourite toy. As always the students represented the College beautifully to the extent that we as staff had compliments on how polite and well-mannered the children were from both Disney staff, the hotel workers and finally the driver who said that in fifteen years the students were the best group he had ever taken away.

Sports Department News Year 7 Cricketers entertained Tudor Grange this week and lost on the last ball of the match. Some steady batting saw the boys post a formidable target but Tudor steadily got closer and on the last ball of the game hit a single to win! Well tried lads. The Year 8 Rugby and rowing team competed at the School games at Bromsgrove School on the 24th of June. It was a fantastic day with over 1000 students from all across the County taking part. The rugby team played some fast paced rugby with excellent ball handling skills. We finished 4th in the tournament but were one result away from a deserved second place. The Rowing team worked really hard to come third which is a fantastic achievement considering their lack of experience. We also had many students taking up leadership roles on the day. Well done to all concerned. School Ambassadors

Sports Department News Cricket year 10 v Blessed Edwards The boys bowled extremely well with Sam Hasnip picking up 4 wickets. We reduced Blessed Edwards to 83 runs off 12 overs. After a dreadful start 7 for 5 wickets our big hitter Tanaka strode to the wicket and dispatched the bowling to all corners. His knock of 32 put us in a winning position, Charlie Martin and Piers Hilton Turvey saw the win though with some very clever batting at the end. A great win lads!! Year 7 playing in their second match lost to a very strong Christopher Whitehead side. With more practice the lads will only get better! The year 7 and 8 pupils had their own world cup tournaments this week with over 35 boys taking part. The year 7 competition was won by England ( hopefully a good omen) and the year 8's by Honduras. The boys scored some great goals and had a real fun night. Well done to all the boys concerned especially Diogo Almeida who scored a hat trick in the final for England!! Year 1 Multi Skills Festival On 6th June we held a Multi skills event for year 1 children. Claines St Barnabas and Northwick and St Georges all took part with a total of 120 children. They were greeted by a selection of our year 7 and some yr 10 students who were leading the event. For most this was their first experience of leadership. The leaders arrived at college at 8am for some training and setting up all the different stations to improve speed, agility and co-ordination. They took a group of 10 children for a warm up and then the children had about 8 minutes on a selection of fun activities. It was fantastic to see our leaders grow in confidence throughout the event. They found it rewarding to see the children having fun whilst learning new skills and are already asking when our next event is. Many staff commented on how mature our student leaders were and how kind they were to the little ones. Thanks to the following for their help in running this event. Gabby Aljaradet, Georgia Antonia, Olivia Bradley, Nathan Clarke, Aaron Cook, Jack Cowie, Gemma Croad, Ella De Sousa, Jo Dyson, Jordan Lee Harris, Maya Hollins, Will John, Jess Jordan, Ben Lloyd, Nic Mathews, Elliot Mathews, Volodymyr Miagkitch, Sachin Muir, Dan Norcott, Lois Openshaw, Chloe Prince, Jo Savage, Chloe Trevitt, Alexander Whaley, Keiron Woodbury, Sam Young and Ola Wolanski,

Aston Villa Education Day Miss Spink was lucky enough to book an Eduacation Day for the primary schools at Aston Villa. 47 children from Claines St Barnabas Northwick and St Georges took part alongside Meg Gardner Pheobe Watts Hannah Bushell Leah Dimmock Gastao De Sousa and Aston Howard who acted as team managers. The day began with a football tournament held in the Academy Centre. Each team represented a country in the World Cup. The children all mixed together extremely well and played with enthusiasm and true sportsmanship throughout. Unfortunately England was beaten in the final by Germany on penalties! We then had a tour of the stadium stopping in the players lounge, press conference room and both home and away changing rooms. We then headed for the pitch lining up in pairs in the players tunnel and walking out to music to create an amazing atmosphere. To finish off the tour the children were sat in the dug out. Everyone had a fantastic day and went home with some great memories. Today Leaders from Bishops: Ross Page Will Garrad Juri Hayes and Sam Yeomans ran a World cup Football Tournament for 60 Year 4 children at Perdiswell primary school. The children played 3 matches in the group stages and then had final play offs with Italy beating Spain in the final.

College Fete—8th July 2014 On the afternoon of 8th July Bishop Perowne held their college fete organised by Student Council. Unfortunately after a bad weather forecast it was decided to hold the fete in the Sports Hall. However, this did not stop the fun and enjoyment. There were many stalls, including hot dogs, beat the goalie, lucky lollies, cake sales galore, tombolas and smoothies to name but a few. The afternoon kicked off with Ms Farr providing free ice creams and lollies for all staff and students. There were prizes for the best looking stall and also the stall which provided the best customer service. These were won by Miss Alexander and Mr Varey. Each community chose its own charity to which the funds were donated. Perrins is going to St. Paul’s Hostel, Duckworth to Teenage Cancer Trust, Fearnley to Little Heart Matters and Tilley to Acorns. At present, we have raised around £400. Well done to everyone. We would especially like to thank Ms Farr for supplying the ice-creams, the site management team, and all the staff and students who worked so hard. We hope that this will be the start of a long lasting Bishop Perowne tradition. The Student Leadership Team.

College Improvements—Summer 2014 During the Summer Holiday period work will be carried out in various parts of the College. The Gas Main is currently being replaced. Work started on this project in the Easter Holidays with a pipe to the kitchen that enabled our kitchens to continue to produce hot food. The remainder of the work is to replace the entire gas main from the meter-house all the way to the Malvern Building. This supplies gas to each of the College buildings as well as the boiler house. Work has already started on this new pipe and it will be completed before the start of the Autumn term. A major refurbishment of the upstairs Lickey art room will also be carried out during the summer. Clent room C3 is being converted to an engineering teaching space and the library is also being decorated and having some new furniture. The College kitchens are being altered to accommodate the free school meals provision that the Government is bringing in for primary schools. We cook the meals that are served at St Barnabas and St George’s. The resulting increased demand for meals by those two schools from September requires a greater capacity in the kitchen. This project has been funded by Worcestershire County Council. Also connected with catering is the cashless catering system that will be brought in during September. The Abberley Building will have new windows fitted during the summer. The old ones whilst metal framed sit in an outer frame of wood. This outer frame has become rotten and, therefore, all the windows will be replaced with double glazed units. The netball court retaining wall will be finished by the start of the new term. The court used to be surrounded by a steeply sloping earth bank which was falling onto the playing surface, clogging the drainage and allowing weed growth. The new wall will prevent that from happening and keep the tarmac fit for purpose for many years to come. M.C. Bettridge
