Bishop Perowne’s best endeavours to raise money for Nepal HEADTEACHER of Bishop Perowne C of E College Mark Pollard was first on one of spin bikes as students and staff attempted to cycle the height of Everest – 29,000 feet – to raise money for the Nepal Earthquake Disaster Appeal. Three spin bikes were in action all day in the reception area of the school with cyclists changing every 20 minutes. By the end of the day it was hoped their pedal power would have reached the equivalent of 29,000 feet several times and hundreds of pounds raised for the families left homeless and terrified by the devastating earthquakes in Nepal. Each person donated at least £1, donations were also given by non-cycling students and staff, and buskers were on hand to give encouragement. Half-way through his 20 minutes of pedalling Mr Pollard said it was OK once he had got into the rhythm of cycling and added that he did go to the gym twice a week anyway. Lorraine Stevens, the teacher organising the event, said: “We felt it was really important to raise money for Nepal, especially as former colleague Trish Butler who was the head of English has been teaching in Nepal for a few years now. Our students always rise to the challenge and will be fully supportive.”
100% Attendance—The Results Friday, 22nd May saw the ‘draw’ for 100% attendance. The following students were successful, each being presented with an iPad mini for their commitment.: Amina Begum, Nakita Borwick, Riley Thomasson and Bailey Vinyard.

Leadership Team News
Community News
Since the last newsletter there has been a shift around in the Student Leadership Team, as the year 11s have put their efforts into their exams a new team has been selected. It consists of: Iris Furtado (Head Girl), Alex Lee, Hannah Bridge (Deputy Head Girls), Bailey Vinyard, Charlotte Hurley, Keira Lewis and Ella Healey (Assistant Head Girls). Their male counterparts are: Matt Green (Head Boy), Claudio Almedia and Craig Strachan (Deputy Head Boys). However this is not the only change occurring in the team as Mrs Stevens takes over operations as the team attempts to built a better working relationship with the members of the Community Parliament and combine the two councils together. This is all part of an effort as we try and have a more proactive role in college life. Collectively, we have however been thrown right into the deep end as within days of being appointed we were given tasks of redecorating the common room and organizing a school fete for the end of term.
The current Year 11 Community Parliament Team have met several times over the last few weeks to decide on the roles of the new Year 10 candidates that will take over from them in the next few weeks. The out-going Year 11 team have been amazing and our thanks and best wishes go to them all.
Student Leadership Team
The first task of the new team will be helping with Arts Week activities in July. They will also be working much more closely with the College Leadership Team (Head Boy/Head Girl Team) in the coming months and into Year 11. It will be exciting to see how the two new teams develop in their new and challenging roles! As part of Arts week they will be organising a Fete which builds on the success of the first one held last year, and to which we hope to invite parents. Further details to follow. There has also been an increased focus on punctuality and uniform this term and the majority of our students arrive on time and ready for work, looking extremely smart. Thank you parents and carers for your continued support. Community Leaders
Boris’ Blog EAL Department News Ms Farr left at the end of the Easter term and the students presented her with a beautiful homemade cake, cards, flowers and gifts. We were then very pleased to welcome our new Head teacher, Mr Pollard, to a meet and greet event at the Friday cake club where he enjoyed tasting food from different countries and getting to know the EAL students. Like schools all around the country, it is exam time at Bishop Perowne and for the first time some of our EAL students have taken the opportunity, provided by the college, to take a Portuguese GCSE. They have been working hard with Mrs Griffiths, one of our EAL Learning Leaders, and we wish them every success. Here they are ready to sit their first exam.
Hi everyone, What an exciting half term we have had, here in the Nurture Base. The children have been having a lovely time talking about all the things that make them feel good and all the things they love about school. We have been playing games where you have to listen very carefully to a sentence and say it back or answer a question. What fun! The children all say that this helps them to listen and understand more in lessons. We also went for a trip to Malvern Hills and it really was great, we did a lot of walking and it was fun but I had to have a long sleep when I got back. I took some children to the Countryside Centre too! We saw so much nature and played on the swings. It was a real treat. In lessons, we worked very hard on improving our communication skills, to help us in the classroom and prepare us for learning. We talked about how important it is to listen, but also to let the teacher know how you feel. We learned lots of new ways of communicating with the teacher and our classmates. We are getting ready to meet all the new boys and girls that are coming to Bishop Perowne and I hope we will see lots of them at our open evening in June. See you soon. Boris

D & T News—Lizzie Laser Blog For the past brace of weeks, one has been powerless to function as one’s extractor has ceased to perform, denoting that harmful, and detrimental gases and particles are not being extricated from the classroom. Ongoing students’ work is backing up, as are pieces of exam work, potential commissions, and sample pieces for external companies. There are some very artistic and skilfully designed clocks from a number of students, and one awaits to witness their fabrication. To use a phrase in the style of Titus Maccius Plautus, ‘Non sicut qui non vacent’. One was hoping to be in receipt of a new motor for one’s extractor a week ago, but alas one is still waiting. On a positive note, wedding favours for one of our TAs have been designed. Bookmarks were luckily produced prior to one’s infirmity, and have been forwarded to Poland for the wedding on May 23 rd. Unfortunately the tea-lights are ‘on hold’ but with luck, a new motor, and some spare hours, they too should soon be heading in the same direction as the bookmarks. Update; the motor dispatched over a week ago has disappeared, evaporated, waned, ebbed, dissipated, and dematerialised from the delivery tracking system, so things continue to, how can one put it; ‘go Lycoperdon’. Samples are being produced following contacts with ‘Croome Cuisine’ purveyors of cheeses, produced in Wittington Worcester, and ‘The Bad Brownie Company’. Both companies use slate to sample their products from, and one is sourcing slate together with a special mineral oil to treat the slate prior to food usage. The latter company has requested specific sized slates for use when sampling brownies in Selfridges London no less. One’s extractor motor arrived on Thursday 14th, and consequently one underwent a delicate, complex and labyrinthine transplant. Performed without anaesthetic, the procedure called for specialist and subtle tools. Once removed, it became apparent that one’s motor was seriously and gravely congested with debris. To alleviate this problem in the future, pre-filters have been ordered, and once supplied and installed will eliminate much of the debris and minute particles emitted by the laser process which caused one’s problem. The pristine motor was securely mounted in place, and having been re-configured and calibrated, one burst into life and prepared samples for a possible commission for the ‘bad brownie’ company. One also produced a sample for Petley & Shepherd Metalsmiths – yes our very own Mr Shepherd. Finally, one produced a sample for Croome Cuisine, a local Artisan Cheese Maker. Running quietly, one will soon produce the back log of work designed by students. One is back in business.

Vamos Theatre Company and Association for Care and Training Conference
Also as part of the week will be Sports Day and the annual College Fete.
FUN and interactive workshops and a performance by a Worcester theatre company gave Bishop Perowne C of E College students a better understanding of adult social care careers.
Young Photographers’ Success
The two-day project was organised by the Association for Care Training and their I Care...Ambassador Service, Bishop Perowne College, in Merriman’s Hill Road, Worcester and the Vamos Theatre company. The event was targeted at students in years 10 and 11 and highlighted adult social care as a career choice with real progression pathways. On the first day Vamos delivered their new production ‘Taking Care – out for Tea’ which is based on the characters in Vamos Theatre's national touring production 'Finding Joy'. The performance featured Joy and her grandson Danny who cares for her. The two go out for tea together and the performance focused on the relationship between them. The sketch was portrayed by two masked performers. The second day comprised workshops covering vacancies, work experience, apprenticeships and recruiting. These workshops gave students the opportunity to experience the full range of resources available while participating in a fun and memorable way. Successes of Previous Students CONGRATULATIONS to all the former Bishop Perowne C of E College pupils who appeared recently in the Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society’s production of West Side Story at the Swan Theatre. The super talented ex-Bishop’s people on stage were Kit Windows-Yule, Abbie Jakeman, Laura Synnuck, Hattie Amos, Aaron Bennett, Dan Hooper, Jack Giblen, Michael Hill, Elliot Kainey, Lily Kainey, Becky Price, Megan Hill and Naimee Tudge. Arts Week Arts Week will take place this year in the week beginning 6th July. Planning for it is well under way and it promises to be yet another exciting and rewarding event. A range of professional artists from Circus Skills to Aerial Dance and including Martial Arts and puppetry will visit College and deliver workshops to our students. During the week there is also a wide range of trips on offer to the students and the only difficulty will be making a choice as to which ones to go on. These include an overnight stay in London to see a West End show, more local trips to Vue Cinema, RAF Cosford and all of Year 7 will spend a day walking the Malvern Hills.
The Young Photographer of the Year competition, now in its fourth year, was run in partnership by a Malvern-based camera club and Worcestershire County Council, and open to children and young people up to the age of 19, who are in full-time education in the county. The successful Bishop’s students are Kiera Lewis who is in Year 10 and was the winner of her category with the image called '7R37', as well as getting a judge's choice award for her 'Pollen' image. Kiera is studying GCSE photography at Bishop Perowne and hopes to have a career in advertising photography. Josetta Reid was a runner up in the Upper Secondary category; Steph Pugh was also a runner up in her category and Alexandra Willcock a runner up in the Lower Secondary category. Worcester Dance Festival ONCE again the dance department at Bishop Perowne C of E College, hosted and ran the Worcester Dance Festival in association with Dancefest and the Worcester Dance Teachers. This year the dance department's organisational skills have been used as the blue print for other festivals around the county. This annual festival, traditionally run by the Year 9 Dance Leadership team, coincided with Comic Relief. The Year 9s welcomed more than 300 students from around Worcester with ages ranging from Year 2 to sixth form. They created and led the warm-up routine for the festival, one in the morning and one in the afternoon as part of their one-hour leadership challenge for their Dance Leadership Award level 1, run by the Sports Association. Year 9 have had to consider not only their performance in the warm-up but what leadership skills and team work was needed to create, present and host a dance festival. The visiting students came from several schools and colleges within the area and performed a range of dances that have been created for exam work, class and club work. ‘Essential Overdrive’ While the Year 9s were busy running the festival to complete their leadership challenge both Year 10 and Year 11 enjoyed performing a range of examination work. Katie Hawkins presented her GCSE dance choreography called ‘Draw the Line’ while Year 10 GCSE dance presented a group dance based on their recent workshop and theatre visit with the Richard Alston Dance Company called ‘Essential Overdrive.’ All students performing in the festival have had the opportunity to be picked to perform at the Worcestershire Dancing to be held at the Artrix ,Bromsgrove, in July.

Art workshops with the artist John Denaro
Bishop Perowne Glass Workshops
A group of year 9 and Year 10 Art students were given the opportunity to work with the artist John Denaro for whole day workshops, producing large scale chalk pastel portraits. These workshops were funded by Voices and Visions for their Arts Festival in Worcester as well as by Bishop Perowne Church of England College. All the students had a brilliant time, and Craig Strachan summed up the experience when he said, ' It was really daunting at the start of the day to be given an A1 sheet that we would then draw our own portraits on to. But the day went so quickly - I can't believe I managed to finish mine and I learnt so much! '
The Art Department held another glass workshop on Saturday 16th May and again made some lovely pieces of work! If you are interested in attending a glass workshop, please contact Mr Hewson via email: hewsons@bishop-perowne.worcs.sch.uk.
Some of these portraits are exhibited in the college as well as being exhibited in the cathedral as part of the Voices and Visions Schools exhibition that ends on Tuesday 2nd June.

What do students need to bring for PE?
The ethos of Bishop Perowne Church of England College is centred around equipping students for the future and learning in a caring, Christian environment. Well done Izzie!! Cricket On the 13th of May we played 2 games of Cricket against Chantry and although we lost both we competed really well and showed real progress in our bowling and fielding (batting needs further attention). Ben Hathaway and Alex Whaley bowled with real pace and ripped through the Chantry batting order to restrict the year 8 team to 79 runs from 16 overs. We started well in response and got to within 1 run of their score but sadly failed at the final hurdle. The year 9 boys never scored a big enough total to defend (30) and were defeated with 2 overs to spare. Well done to all concerned.

Touch Rugby
Fitness Fun
This week Bishop Perowne took part in a Touch Rugby Tournament at Droitwich Rugby Club. Liam Cooper had been delivering Rugby sessions in school last term and this was organised to bring all the skills learnt together in a competitive environment. Schools were invited to bring a squad of players from any age groups.
Claines Northwick St Barnabas and St Georges brought reception children to College to take part in a morning of Fitness Fun.. A circuit was set up by year 7 students. It was their first time in leading at a festival. The activities were designed to improve agility, co ordination, jumping skills, throwing and catching. The little ones were full of energy at the start but by the end were worn out as they worked so hard. The leaders were a credit to the College and great role models for the little ones. They all went away having had a good time and a really positive experience
Bishops started off against South Bromsgrove and it soon became obvious all their hard work had paid off and they won the game. Their confidence and self-belief grew and they won their next two matches. They thought they had won the tournament and it was whilst celebrating discovered they had to take part in a first and second play-off match as the final against the team they had already beaten! In a tense and exciting game they gave away a try. Despite fighting back and nearly scoring so close to the line, Baxter College had revenge, beat them and they finished runners up. A fantastic team performance from Izzie Cale, Ava Stephens, Danielle Weston, Chloe Prince, Mia Howard, Maya Hollins Kerry Williams and Hannah Mathews. This event was funded by Worcester Warriors.

Show My Homework At Bishop Perowne College we strongly believe that the setting of high quality homework supports learning in the classroom and, from the feedback we have received from parents, we know that you share this viewpoint. In order to support our students in the completion of homework, and provide greater access to what homework has been set, we have introduced a system called Show My Homework. Show My Homework will not only be of great value of students, but parents will be able to access all homeworks that have been set for their Son or Daughter by visitinghttps://bishopperowne.showmyhomework.co.uk and filtering for the appropriate group or teacher. Homework Timetables for all 5 year groups are on the website. These timetables reflect when your Son or Daughter will have homework from the various subjects and also an approximate amount of time they should expect to spend on them. These timetables are a starting point and, through the gathering of feedback from a range of stakeholders, they will be amended and adjusted throughout the year. The latest versions will always be available through the College website. We hope that Show My Homework will be a very useful tool in supporting your Son or Daughters progress and attainment at Bishop Perowne. Any feedback on your experience with Show My Homework or the homework timetables would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to contact Mr Kling (Deputy Headteacher) via email, dkl@bishopperowne.worcs.sch.uk, or phone using 01905 746800.
