Plus much more ………..
Our second College term certainly started with a ‘bang’ not a ‘whimper’ with the visit of the Secretary of State for Education, Mr Michael Gove M.P. and Mr Robin Walker M.P. We are most grateful to the time they both gave which enabled us to explain the considerable impact that Pupil Premium funding is having on educational outcomes. We were glad that we were able to demonstrate our rapidly growing specialism in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics both through our work in Design Technology and the newly furbished Science Laboratories. Mr Gove was especially interested in our flourishing partnerships with Yamazaki Mazak, The University of Worcester and The King’s School, our academic curriculum and the choices this offers for our students. Further details are included in this newsletter. This term there has been a real balance between success in examinations, opportunities in the Arts, success in sports and decision making for the future. On 13th February, following the Year 11 practice examinations, we held our annual results day, which was modelled very closely on the ‘real thing’ in August. Year 11 each received an envelope containing their results to give them as clear an idea as possible of their strengths and areas to work at in preparation for the forthcoming public examinations. The names of those students who exceeded their targets are included in this newsletter; each one received a Headteacher’s Commendation. During the next few months our staff will ‘go that extra mile’ to ensure the best possible outcomes. We continue to offer a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities in Physical Education. Our students have been especially successful in Handball, Cross Country, Badminton, Rugby, Netball, Football and Basketball. There have been many highlights in the Arts this term, including the production of ‘Bugsy Malone’, our work as the Hub School for the Arts in the West Midlands with Vamos Company and our students’ success in achieving their Arts’ Leadership Awards. Following a vibrant Options Evening in January, Year 8 are now making their choices for upper school courses. We are very grateful to parents and carers for their support with this. Continued over …………….

Message from the Headteacher continued …. We are looking forward to many events already planned for next half term. On Thursday, 27th February, we shall be holding a Careers Fair to which all parents, carers and students are warmly invited. Year 10 Parents Consultation will take place on Thursday, 13th March. On Friday, 21st March we shall raise money for BBC Sports Relief. We are already beginning to put plans in place for the commemoration of the start of the First World War. Our Easter Eucharist, to which you are all warmly invited, will be led by the Archdeacon on Friday, 11th April. A uniform survey was conducted in January /February. Responses from parents, carers, students and staff are included in this newsletter. As a result I shall be discussing this with Governors who set our Policy on uniform, I will report any changes to you shortly. In January we welcomed Mr Aitken, Subject Leader for Science; Miss Morris and Mrs Stanley to the English Department and Miss Macleod supporting across the curriculum. Mr Kling took up his post as Senior Deputy and Mrs Price as Deputy Headteacher. On Friday, 14th February we wish Bon Voyage to those going on our Annual Ski Trip to Austria. I should like to thank everyone for their support this term and wish you a good half term. Ms Farr – Headteacher

Press Release—Mr Gove’s visit to Bishop Perowne Secretary of State for Education Visits Worcester Michael Gove MP, the Secretary of State for Education, today met with senior educationalists in the county at a leading Worcestershire school. Mr Gove was welcomed to Bishop Perowne School, which is in the county’s top 25% of schools, by Head Teacher, Julie Farr. As well as meeting pupils, teachers and Governors, Mr. Gove, was also invited to meet representatives of the school’s major partners: the Vice Chancellor of University of Worcester, which is one of the country’s best universities for teacher training; Tim Keyes, the head teacher of the highly ranked, independent Kings School Worcester and Ian Black, Human Resources Manager of top engineering company Mazak Europe, as well as Worcestershire MP Robin Walker. During his visit, Mr. Gove toured the new science facilities at the school and was also shown the urgent need for new facilities for teaching Design and Technology. Commenting on Mr. Gove’s visit and the meeting, Julie Farr said: “We welcomed the opportunity to show Mr Gove evidence of the impact of the Government’s education policies. “We are rapidly developing our specialism in Science, Technology and Engineering with the generous support of the University of Worcester, Yamazaki Mazak and the King’s School, and we were able to give Mr Gove an understanding of the bid we are about to make to central Government for a grant of £2 million to build a new technology and engineering facility.” Professor David Green, Vice Chancellor of the University of Worcester, added: “We work very closely with Bishop Perowne, both in training the next generation of outstanding teachers and in further improving the already excellent teaching at the school. “At present we are working particularly closely with the school in the areas of in Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics. We strongly support their bid for capital funding for new Design and Technology facilities – as we know Bishop Perowne would be exemplary in putting these facilities to excellent educational use.” Mr. Tim Keyes, Head of The Kings School Worcester, who is widely considered one of the country’s most experienced and outstanding head teachers said: “We are proud of the link between Bishop Perowne and The King’s School as a model of a partnership between an independent and a maintained school working harmoniously together to the benefit of students in both schools. “Our teachers learn a great deal from experience in each other’s schools and our students have worked together in many joint enterprises.” He added: “Further links in relation to Maths, Science and Technology as well as in personal development and student leadership will be important elements of our ongoing partnership.” Mr Walker, who invited Mr Gove to the Worcester school, added: “I was delighted that the Education Secretary accepted my invitation to come to Worcester. I am very excited about the collaboration between Bishop Perowne, the University of Worcester, The Kings School and Yamazaki Mazak. “Each one is making a real contribution and adding to the strength of the whole. I was also very proud to show Mr Gove the school’s new Science facilities – funded by his department - which I was able to open last year.”

Michael Gove promises Fairer Funding before Election Vital promise made as Education Secretary visits two city schools Robin Walker, Worcester’s MP, who has put fairer school funding at the heart of his Parliamentary career, was pleased to welcome the Education Secretary Michael Gove to Worcester on Friday and to hear him confirm that schools in the County could expect to see benefit from the Government’s funding reforms ahead of the 2015 General Election. The Secretary of state visited two schools in Worcester – Gorse Hill Community Primary School and Bishop Perowne Church of England Academy. Speaking to local reporters outside Bishop Perowne CofE Academy, following his visit there, Mr Gove was asked about the system of funding and said: “It’s going to change before the election. One of the things that Robin Walker as Worcester’s MP has been campaigning for, ever since he was elected, is a fairer deal for Worcester and for the children who go to school in great schools like Bishop Perowne and we have committed to change things so that there will be more money for areas like Worcester that have been poorly funded in the past.” Asked to confirm that this would guarantee real change before the election he added: “Yes we’re going to make sure that Worcester and Worcestershire get more money, and that change will occur before the election.” Commenting on this announcement, Robin Walker said “I could not be more pleased that Mr Gove has answered the demand for fairer funding in this way. I made my maiden speech on this issue and I have raised it time and time again in the Commons. I have taken colleagues to lobby Ministers, the Chancellor and even the Prime Minister and I have coordinated cross party campaigning. For years it has felt like we were winning the argument for fairer funding but that delivery was just around the corner. Michael’s words today are music to my ears and should provide certainty for local schools that better times are coming.” “Nobody is saying that everything will change overnight nor that the whole gap between Worcestershire and better funded areas such as London and Birmingham would be closed in one go, but what the Government has made clear is that steps will be taken to move towards fairer funding within the lifetime of the Coalition. Considering that it has taken decades to get to this point, it is a huge relief to have that certainty. A consultation is expected on the details of the new national funding formula in the very near future and I will be pushing every step of the way to get that consultation out there in front of local schools so that they can have their say to make clear how badly this is needed.” “The last Labour Government promised to address this but never delivered. I am proud that the Coalition is making good on that and at last getting fair funding to our schools.” Robin will be chairing a Westminster Education Forum event on providing fairer school funding later this week and is set to speak at a special f40 conference at the House of Commons on the 5th February. As a Vice Chairman of the cross party f40 campaign he has been closely involved with the national campaign for fairer school funding over a number of years.

Lizzie Laser—Blog Lizzie Blog February 2014 Half term looms and one has been busy creating memorabilia promoting the Bugsy Malone show, here at Bishop Perowne. Six hundred bookmarks were designed, laser cut, and supplied on time; along with cut-out musical instruments – not real ones one has to affirm. The laughter shared during the design process of the bookmarks left many staff members in tears, (of laughter one must add) as draft items were submitted for approval. Some being swiftly deposited in the waste bin. The ‘winning’ design depicts a’ gangster’ with a ‘splurge-gun’, and a 1920’s dancing girl. When given to primary school visitors who came to see the production, they were very well received. It was a pleasure to be able to manufacture a simple cross for one of our students’ parents whose close friend had been tragically killed in a motoring accident. The cross is now a tribute having been secured at the site of the unfortunate accident. Student work continues to take up one’s time not only for exam work, but also as part of the two dimensional drawing learning which some students find they have a flair for, and may lead to an exciting career in the not too distant future. Some students are combining laser work with the sublimation process, allowing an amalgamation of techniques within a single project. This is allowing students to ‘think inside, as well as outside the box’, or (storage system), by blending modern day procedures with ‘designs from the last 100 years’. George and Georgina – the 3D printers - continue to be called upon to both prototype, and to create final projects three dimensionally. Students are designing their own ‘I Phone’ case, locking clip for an ‘I Pod’ travel case , robotic ‘joining’ pieces, drawer handles, and plectrum holder. ‘The twins’ have proved already to be a worthwhile, investment as pupils can use this training as a base to help steer them towards a career in engineering. Where to next one asks?
Charity: Fund Raising at Bishop Perowne Cancer Research A donation of £525.29 was made to Cancer Research following our non-uniform day on 19th December 2013. Georgina Dutfield Georgina Dutfield in form P9 has recently raised money through a bake sale. She had decided to raise the money for St Richards Hospice for the Flourishing Rivers challenge. She has raised £12.20 for the Hospice. Well done for all her hard work and gorgeous cakes.

Young Enterprise Ignite – Young Enterprise 2014 didn’t start off quite as we expected. We were forced to place production on hold as the kiln developed a technical fault preventing us from slumping any more bottles. This has now been resolved and we are working hard on reducing the backlog. We haven’t taken the break in production as an opportunity to rest; instead we have been developing our presentational skills and have just completed an assembly at Perdiswell Primary School. It was so successful and encouraging to see the younger students taking a real interest in our activities we have now approached Northwick Manor Primary school to present to them during an assembly. As we rapidly approach our main trading season we have decided to focus on slumping the more interesting bottles, these include the Sapphire Bombay Blue, Coca Cola and Cobra bottles. We also now have in stock a few magnum champagne bottles and are amazed at how well these look slumped. These rare bottles will be available for purchase from our trade stand at the following fairs – buy quick to avoid disappointment. Please come and support us at our trade fairs Saturday 1st March 2014 – Worcester High Street Saturday 8th March 2014 – Webbs of Wychbold
STEM Raspberry Pi Club Thursday 30th January saw the launch of our new ICT STEM Raspberry Pi club. The club sees Year 7 Bishop Perowne students join with Year 6 students from St Barnabas participating in STEM based activities. We have been fortunate to secure the help and support of Mr Ben Rawles, our STEM ambassador who has planned many exciting activities for the coming weeks. These include programming activities in Python, connecting the Raspberry Pi to various outputs including LED lights, tracking location through the plotting of GPS coordinates, programming a Wii remote controller, computer gaming (including Minecraft and Pygames) and making Jelly Babies squeal! The club is open to Year 7 students who own their own Raspberry Pi device. It runs from 3:15 – 4:15pm in ACS2, with Mrs Morris. Anyone interested in joining should speak to Mrs Morris in the first instance.

£10 Challenge Duckworth 002's £10 challenge, the now legendary 'Maggot Racing' "Maggot Racing; the essence of sporting entertainment. Watching small, wrinkly beings writhe about hoping to be the first to finish. Which is unusual... because they're maggots. Instead of betting on a chosen maggot, a lucky dip was held before each race. This added a dangerous dose of adrenaline to the now widespread sport, and the craze spread like flies - especially within the Year 7 Bishop Perowne community. The rules were simple; you would lucky dip a maggot from a pit of froth and place it in the middle of a round target like 'Maggot Racing' board. The first maggot to reach the furthest of the concentric rings was deemed the winner, and the proud owner of that maggot would have doubled their 10 pence stake. On the morning of the first race, P23 was buzzing with anticipation, and a swarm of students decided to sacrifice their lunch for the glorious smell of maggots hard at work. Soon, D002's 'Maggot Racing' was the talk of Bishop Perowne - from corridors to classrooms, to the canteen;'Maggot Racing' had taken off. Head Boy, Luke Ford said: "The enjoyment of watching small wrinkled creatures flapping about on a target was enough to hook me for life. The whole experience was good, and I won - which was good. I also got to make new 'Maggot Racing' friends, which was also good." "Maggot Racing?" said Mr. Westrip. "It's not for the faint hearted." In total, D002 raised £22.50, and we would like to say a final thank you to all our intrepid 'customers', Alex Van Wienen (our esteemed maggot supplier), and not least Ms. Farr for allowing our event to take place. William Hodges, Year 11, D002 'D2 Maggot Racing.co.uk' Executive Director."

Geography Department News YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY TRIP – FRIDAY, 24TH JANUARY 2014 Students in year eight have studied the topic of Global Village in their geography lessons. This topic focuses primarily on the concepts of interdependence and globalisation. To support students’ learning and understanding of this topic, a visit to the Mazak factory in Worcester was arranged. This was an exciting opportunity to visit the European headquarters of a truly global company. Students were given a talk about Mazak, how companies/industries are globalised, why they pick certain places for certain activities and a tour of the Mazak site. On returning to school students wrote a report on what they have discovered from the field trip.

Science Department News : STEM Specialism FREEZE! On 30/1/14 Mrs Lynne Long visited the college to deliver a 'hot & cold' presentation to our Science STEM Club. Mrs Long works at the School of Physics & Astronomy at Birmingham University - our paths first crossed at the 'Inspiring Tomorrow's Scientists' STEM event in November, where I expressed an interest in her coming to the college to deliver a presentation covering interesting areas of science outside of the current National Curriculum. Mrs Long came to the college with liquid nitrogen and superconductors. She delivered an interesting presentation about the work done at the University of Birmingham and how students could benefit from a physics degree. Liquid nitrogen was used to instantly freeze a variety of objects and demonstrate resistance & currents in electrical circuits - some students were brave enough to have some liquid nitrogen poured over their hands! Students also experienced superconductors and their ability to levitate magnetic materials. The real life implications of this scientific phenomena were discussed as some trains in Japan rely on magnetic levitation to offer a friction-free and therefore faster method of travel. Students enjoyed the presentation and were provided with useful documentation on engineering and physics careers at the University of Birmingham. I hope that we can maintain and develop positive links with the University in the future. Mr O Elmougy Mr Aitken—New Subject Leader for Science I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am the new Subject Leader for Science and started at Bishop Perowne College in January. I have previously held various positions of responsibility in my 9 year teaching career at another local secondary school and saw this role as a great opportunity. I see science as a multi-skilled subject which has various and far reaching cross curricular facets which mean its importance in society and further careers and studies can’t be underestimated. In the short time I have been at Bishop Perowne I have had the pleasure of meeting the students here and have been pleased with their adaption to the change they’ve had in their science teacher at an odd time of year. There are some very talented and passionate young scientists here and I wish to build on that and nurture students as they progress through their science education. Mr C Aitken
Arts’ Department News Glass Workshop at Bishop Perowne Church of England College The Art Department again, ran a glass workshop with regular attenders, as well as new participants on Saturday 1 st February. Glass is cut, shaped and pieced together to make decorative and figurative pieces of work that are fused in a kiln at approximately 800 degrees centigrade. Some of the work is then slumped into moulds to make plates or bowls. Examples of the work made can be seen on the Bishop Perowne Church of England website.

Arts’ Department News Primary Music Festival On the afternoon of Tuesday 11th February, the Year 10 GCSE Music students will be taking part in a primary school music festival at Lyppard Grange. The students have formed an A Capella vocal group and are beginning to develop arrangements of songs in a variety of styles and genres to create an interesting and varied set list. The group will be performing two songs as well as some individual students giving solo performances. Hereford College of Arts at Bishop Perowne Students from Hereford College of Arts visited Bishop Perowne College on Tuesday 14th January and performed a piece of physical theatre called 'Terrible Infants'. A superb performance, it gave our GCSE Drama and Silver Arts Awards students an opportunity to see many techniques used in the performance that they also study as part of their arts courses. 'Terrible Infants' was a story told through movement, mime, gesture, expression, rhymed dialogue and the use of symbolism to represent the inner feelings and conflicts of the characters. It portrayed a world of chaos whilst sustaining a choreographed and superbly controlled range of dynamic and expressive movement throughout. Following the performance, our Year 9 Silver Arts Awards students were involved in a physical theatre workshop with the company. They explored the creation of characters through movement and the building of relationships on stage without the use of words. We hope this will be the beginning of many joint projects in the future between Hereford College and Bishop Perowne and look forward to our next collaboration.

Bugsy Malone The performances of 'Bugsy Malone', this year's major production, began on Friday 31st January when the first of the primary matinee performances played to a packed house of more than 230 children. All three of the matinees are completely sold out and nine different primary schools will see the show before the evening performances begin. Tickets for the evening performances are almost completely sold and these will run on the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th February at 7.00pm in the College Theatre. As with all major productions there have been many people involved in making it a success. More than seventy students, in all year groups, have taken part in performing, backstage and technical roles and various departments within the school, such as Art and Design and Technology, have made unique contributions to its success.

Well done Charlotte Flethcher, Hannah Mathews Brittany Ratcliffe Chloe Davies and Hafsah Muminah. January has been a very busy and productive time in PE. We have been competing in a range of sports as well as trying to promote participation in our usual practices and a couple of new ones. Girls Rugby is now on a Monday evening and handball on a Friday lunch time, these clubs are open to all so come along and join in! Badminton Club on a Monday evening is always well attended and the levels of performance from our students has increased dramatically over a two year period. We were placed first in the key stage 3 and 4 girls championships and seconds in the boys. We were able to enter 3 teams in the Boys championship due to the depth of talent we have. The girls will now compete in the County championships in a couple of weeks. The Cross Country team ran brilliantly again in the District event and we had many top 10 finishes, Sophie Tothill in year 10 won her race!! We now have 4 students who have been selected to run for the County in Hereford. The Boys Handball team competed in a tournament at Blessed Edwards where we were placed joint first and forth respectively. Due to the lack of fixtures in table tennis, Hockey and Handball we have organised our own tournament at Bishops which will be fantastic to give our students a taster in these sporting competitions The basketball teams have not done so well this year and this will be an area of real focus for September. The teams have tried hard but had only 2 victories to cheer about. We look forward to our semi finals in the County rugby tournaments in year 10 and 8 and the County Badminton finals. We also have many Football, Rugby and Netball games to compete in after half term. February and March are set to be very busy months and hopefully very successful as well!! Mr.J.Preece

Sports Department News continued ‌. Year 8 Handball Success On Wednesday 29th January fifteen year 8 boys took part in the Worcester Schools Handball Tournament at Blessed Edwards School. We took two teams and the boys played excellently despite the fact that, for a number of the students, it was the first time that they have ever played competitive Handball. There were particularly impressive displays from Adam Biddle in goal and Aston Howard in attack. We enjoyed great success across the tournament with our B team finishing in 4 th place and our A team finishing as the overall winners. All fifteen boys played fantastically and behaved impeccably, both Mr Hodgkins and Mr Westrip were extremely proud of their efforts, conduct and success. Well done boys!! The Key stage 3 and 4 girls Badminton teams represented Worcester City as District Champions last evening. After an initial solid start against Bromsgrove School and Haybridge we found the going pretty tough as the standard of play was very high. The girls played well on the evening but were narrowly defeated 3-2 in virtually all of the games. With our very successful Monday night programme for Badminton I feel sure that next year we will gain even more success at this level. Well done to all of the girls Emma Fletcher

Careers Information and Guidance Careers Information, Advice and Guidance Update Mrs Reeve-McKew spent last Friday at GCHQ (Government Communications Head Quarters) to discover the latest developments in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related careers. Abbie Hutty who is the Female Engineer of the Year (2013) shared her story on how she was inspired when she was a teenager by watching a news item on the Mars Rover programme. This then led her to follow her passion in STEM related subjects and is now a Spacecraft Structural Engineer working on the Mars Rover. A key theme throughout the day from both Abby and the various other speakers was that there is a national shortage of engineers especially women and this is getting gradually worse year on year. The day was very informative and made it clear that there is a large skill deficit in the workplace for STEM related careers therefore, it is up to this generation to develop their skills in these areas through their studies so as to bridge this gap in the job market. A date for your diary is Thursday, 27th February which is the Bishop Perowne careers fair. The event takes place between 6pm and 8pm and all students and parents are invited. There will be a large number of local employers, national and global business as well as a large variety of further education providers to speak to and ask questions about post 16 options. If your son or daughter would like to explore some ideas about careers advice this event will be an excellent opportunity to do so. If you have any questions about this event do not hesitate to contact Mrs Reeve-McKew. In the run up to the GCSE options process students in Year 8 have participated in 'Careers Fortnight'. This has been designed to ensure that every subject offers a careers lesson to enable students to think about their career plan and the possible trans-
Former Students of Bishop Perowne Joeli Boxall is applying to read German and Law (destination as yet unknown) but is doing exceedingly well. We have been advised that Isabella de Castro Tree has received a conditional place at Lincoln College, Oxford to read German and Portuguese. Congratulations to both of our former students. We wish them every success for the future.
