Lord you are in this place, Fill us with your power, Cover us with your peace, Show us your presence, Fill us with your wisdom. Lord help us to know, We are in your hands, We are under your protection, We are covered by your love, We are guided by what is true, right and just. Lord we ask you today, To deliver us from evil, To guide us in our travels, To defend us from all harm, To protect the wellbeing of others. Lord give us now, Eyes to see the invisible, and give us understanding, Ears to hear your call, Hands to do your work, And hearts to respond to your love.

Our Vision

4

“The Bishop Perowne Church of England Secondary School opened and received its first pupils. The School is an Aided School and has been founded by the Worcester … Education Committee. It occupies buildings which formerly housed the City of Worcester Girls’ Grammar School in Barbourne Road. A number of alterations has had to be made and facilities are being provided for woodwork and metalwork. The whole building has been re-wired and a new oil-fired central heating system installed.

While education has changed vastly during the last fifty years, we remain inclusive of those of deep faith and those of no faith.

Safer Schools

11

This year has seen much change at Bishop Perowne. Already the hub school for the Arts in the West Midlands, we are rapidly developing our specialism in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths especially through our partnership with Yamazaki Mazak UK and the University of Worcester.

Plus much more ………..

Throughout 2013 we have celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of our school, which began its life in buildings in Barbourne then moved to its present site on Merriman’s Hill. During the past fifty years the school has more than quadrupled in size and the staff number has increased to one hundred and thirty. Our aim as a Church School has remained constant: to offer the best academic education which will allow young people to grow, flourish and enjoy a wealth of choices in the future. This is underpinned by the Christian message of love, hope and responsibility to bring about the best for others.

We were delighted to welcome Robin Walker MP to open our newly refurbished Science Laboratories in September; Robin continues to campaign tirelessly for fairer funding for Worcestershire Schools. Details of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities are included in this newsletter.

Message from the Headteacher continued …….. We were also pleased to welcome Jenny Humphries, a former student, in the capacity of Police Community Support Officer, under a radical overhaul of policing which placed officers in schools as part of the community and also working with the local community in some ways similar to the ‘country police officer’. As half term approaches, staff prepare for teacher education days focused around our Raising Attainment Plan, a summary of which is enclosed in this newsletter. The rhythm of school life has gathered pace, with preparations well under way for the Year 11 practice exams, many joint activities planned with our partners the King’s School, rehearsals for our carol service on 11th December in Worcester Cathedral and a vast range of fundraising. During the next half term we shall be carrying out a survey on school uniform and preparing to bid for a new Science, Technology Engineering Building. I should like to thank all parents and carers for your support this term and everyone a good half term holiday.

Headteacher’s Commendations The following students have received Headteacher’s Commendations and five Community Credits Their achievements and contribution to the life of our College are highly valued. Those students marked with a * have more than one Commendation Brandon

Worship Team News Saturday, 19th October—Sunday, 20th October A twenty four hour prayer vigil was held in honour of Reverend Peter Haddleton, rector of St Barnabus’ Church and our school chaplain. Reverend Peter has been a leading force in growing Worship at Bishop Perowne. Working with our worship team and leading our chaplaincy team, he has helped us to develop inter-active worship, Taize-style worship and the part of music in our services. Through Reverend Peter we have introduced the power of a prayer tree and developed our links with a Christian café at Polzeath in Cornwall. We contributed a prayer tree, artefacts from Polzeath, a recording of ‘Indescribable’ and the prayer on the front page of this newsletter to help concentrate the thoughts of those who took part in the vigil. We surround Reverent Peter with our thoughts prayers and love as he has surrounded us.

Worship Team Radio Broadcast The Students Worship team were given a wonderful opportunity to take part in an interview for BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester on the 25th of September. The students involved were, Penny Ashmore, Erinn Melvill, Millie Gaffey, Freddie Lockett and (myself) Harriet. I found it a great experience and a lovely way to spread the message of what it is like attending a Church of England Academy. During the interview, we discussed the reasons that we decided to come to Bishop Perowne and the many experiences that we are offered. We also talked about the effect a Church of England College has upon our whole lives. I really enjoyed being part of the interview, it was an honour that I was chosen to represent our College - something of which I will never forget. Harriet Hardick

Children in Need The School will be celebrating Children in Need on Friday 15th November. Community Parliament are working on details which will be published soon.

Welcome to Year 7 A Warm Welcome to Year 7 I would like to officially welcome Year 7 to Bishop Perowne. I have been so impressed with how quickly they have made the transition from Primary School and have settled into the life of the College with confidence, ease and a determination to do their very best. This has been assisted by the use of buddies in their form groups and mentoring via the tutors. It was fantastic to spend the day with Year 7 at Top Barn Farm at the start of term. All students had the opportunity to work as a group and participate in some fun activities. There was a tremendous sense of team spirit shown and camaraderie. The feedback from the students was extremely positive and they found the day very worthwhile and exhibited some excellent leadership skills during the problem solving activities. Year 7 have been set the challenge to produce the most boxes for our ‘Operation Christmas Child’ Appeal. I know of students who have already made their box which is ready to be sent off at the end of the month. I would like every Year 7 to try and contribute to this worthwhile charity in whichever way they can. If students are able to bring in empty shoe boxes or wrapping paper this would be very helpful. I look forward to watching Year 7 develop over the coming year and achieve their full potential. G. Olseen Year 7 Leader.

Reminder for Year 7 Parents/Carers Year 7 Parents Evening will be held on Thursday 7th November 4—6pm. Please remember to book your appointments with the relevant teachers.

Year 7 Team Building Day at Top Barn Farm Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. - Henry Ford Year 7 overcame a little wet weather early in the day to make our Team-Building Day into an unqualified success. After arriving by double-decker bus Year 7 entered the marquee at Top Barn Activity Centre and were briefed about the challenges that they would be set throughout the day. In the fifteen teams, constituted of a selection of peers from teaching groups, the students were quickly out in the open around the perimeter of the lake undertaking the fifteen tasks that they would be set throughout the day. The students knew only that the teachers would be looking for the development of communication, teamwork and leadership skills as they set about trying to solve and achieve a variety of physical and mental problems. All of the tasks were approached with a positivity and sense of camaraderie that was very pleasing to witness but it was the team plank walking that produced the most cooperation as the teams worked together to make a passageway over blocks and posts to travel between points without touching the ground using only three planks and their teamwork. By the end of the day all agreed that we had achieved our objective: to building rapport between students in order to enable Year 7 teaching groups to learn together

College Community

Page 9

Year 7 Team Building Day at Top Barn Farm continued …... Each task was explained patiently by one a member of either the Student Leadership Team or a Community Captain who I cannot praise highly enough for their diligence and enthusiasm. Throughout the day these Year 11 students stuck to their task and contributed hugely to the enjoyment and learning of the Year 7 students. Their example will mean Year 7 will hold them in high esteem and will have prepared them for their roles over the forthcoming academic year.

Bishop Perowne’s first blog! Our new …. George! A 3D laser printer Our first blog for Bishop Perowne; George was initiated into the D&T STEM stellar system and became active in Clent Block room C3.

Under the watchful eyes of G Jeeves; D Tortise and P Kennett, George drew his first breath and leapt into action. Hearts raced as slowly but surely, his first project rose majestically from the work base. At just 50 mm high, ‘printed’ in white ABS plastic, a purpose designed peg for the Mathematics’ Department ‘Connect Four’ games recently supplied – that is another story.

Although it took twenty minutes to layer the peg, materials costs were incredibly low, making it a feasible and cost effective way to produce prototypes for a range of items to enhance students’ work, or create single or multiple products. The next run produced four identical pegs – only eleven more to produce….

Star date 17:09:13 Downloads of watch strap linkage, and a screw top bottle were next to attempt; so from an on screen drawing and in just over sixty five minutes to these tangible products.

Lots more things to design and make, so apologies for such a short blog, but be assured, ‘blog again, indeed we will’

Official Opening of Bishop Perowne Science Laboratories All at Bishop Perowne are very pleased to be able to unveil our newly refurbished Science Labs. These labs have been completely modernised to ensure that our students have access to cutting edge technologies and facilities. Robin Walker MP will officially open the labs during a ceremony this afternoon. He will be joined by Marcus Burton, CEO of Yamazaki Mazak, and representatives from the King’s School, Worcester and the University of Worcester. The investment in these labs underline the value that Bishop Perowne College puts in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and begins a series of planned refurbishment and enhancement of the facilities in these areas.

Safer Schools Official Launch The 18th September saw the official launch of the Safer Schools Initiative at Bishop Perowne College. We are very pleased to be one of a number of schools who have chosen to be a part of this programme which will ensure that our students continue to thrive in education. During the launch we formally welcomed PCSO Jenny Humphries who will be based at Bishop Perowne and work as part of our already extensive and successful Care, Guidance and Support Team to ensure that students’ progress and achieve. She will also contribute to our GCSE Citizenship curriculum and be an integral part of our students’ academic success in the classroom. As a former student, Jenny is well acquainted with the distinctive ethos of community and partnership that Bishop Perowne possesses and the Safer School's Initiative will further strengthen these local bonds.

Thriving King’s School Partnership Our partnership with The King’s School, Worcester is going from strength to strength and will be branching out to further areas of the College over the course of the year. During the 2012-13 academic year the two schools worked collaboratively in a number of areas including Mock Trial Competitions, Public Speaking, Worship, Author Visits, Specialist Science Days and two highly successful Student Leadership Days which focused on supporting students to be effective and ethical leaders of their peers. Alongside these events the first cohort of Bishop Perowne students took the Latin GCSE, led by a member of The King’s School teaching staff, and enjoyed tremendous success achieving two A*’s, and one A, one B, and one C. Thus far the current year has seen Bishop Perowne students attend a talk at The King’s School from a Holocaust survivor, which was profoundly moving, and a fantastic Performing Arts workshop led by Vamos Theatre group. The current academic year’s collaborations promise to enhance this already strong bond that the two schools enjoy through an even wider range of activities. Areas that we will develop include Combined Cadet Force, the Performing Arts, Music, Dance, Careers Education, further Science Specialist days, as well as utilising King’s School 6th Form students to mentor Bishop Perowne students in subjects such as English and Maths. This unique partnership is one which both schools are deeply committed to and which will continue to grow stronger still in the months and years to come.

The original idea for the tree in remembrance for our Beloved Chair of Governors As I started thinking of words to go within the branches it became clear that the ideals that he held true related to how we as a school embrace all our students past and present. The tree offers protection and care to all and represents the qualities we find within us all. Love, Respect, Care, Growth and Trust.

STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics In an uncertain and unforgiving economic landscape jobs in STEM subjects remain as important as ever – perhaps more so. For this reason and many others Bishop Perowne has committed itself to adopting STEM as an area of specialism. Our STEM focus will be far reaching and draw on the expertise of our partner institutions, including The University of Worcester and Yamazaki Mazak. Partners such as these will enable us to provide relevant and realistic STEM experiences supported by UK leaders in their fields. This type of partnership is unique to Bishop Perowne and will benefit our student tremendously when they enter the world of work or further study. This year will see the introduction of an Engineering GCSE co-delivered by Bishop Perowne staff and specialist Engineers from Yamazaki Mazak. This course will be taught on both sites and students will be able to access the most technologically advanced machine tools and simulators that Mazak has to offer. Bishop Perowne students from the GCSE group would then be well placed to join Mazak’s apprenticeship scheme and the world of employment after leaving the College. To my knowledge this unique and highly innovative method of delivery is the first of its kind in the UK. Together with the University of Worcester, Bishop Perowne will be offering students the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Forensics and Anthropology. Bishop Perowne students with an interest or aptitude in these areas will be provided the opportunity to enhance and deepen their knowledge while being supported by leading academics in their fields. Alongside a rich and diverse academic curriculum, the IT department will be leading a variety of trips and events focusing on espionage and code breaking, including a trip to Bletchley Park. This historic and modern day look at how computers have played a part in some of the most important events in history will serve to engage and deepen Bishop Perowne students’ interest in both subjects. The STEM specialism is one which will serve our students extremely well both in their academic and future professional lives. They will have access to opportunities and experiences which other schools in Worcester cannot offer. Over the coming months and years we will further extend and strengthen this specialism to ensure it continues to provide for our students interests and requirements and as it will be instrumental in the continuing success of Bishop Perowne College.

Arts News Glass Art Workshop At Bishop Perowne 28th September. The community glass art group have had their first glass art workshop for this academic year which was on Saturday 28th September. Participants are parents or people living within the local community, and have been making glass art work over the past year, following on from a workshop run by the internationally exhibiting artist, Siobhan Jones. Some examples of the work made at this workshop are below. If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please contact Mr Hewson at hewsons@bishop-perowne.worcs.sch.uk

Year 11 GCSE Art Rd

and Design Exhibition

On Thursday 3 October, an exhibition was held for the Year 11 GCSE Art and Design students who left at the end of last academic year to show their work. Each student had at least one piece of art work in the exhibition as well as having the folders of coursework available. The exhibition gave the parents and families of the students involved a chance to see the culmination of all their hard work over the last couple of years. A parent at the exhibition said ‘It’s lovely to see all the work together – it really shows how hard they have all worked!’

Arts News contd... Bugsy Malone Auditions took place for the next whole College production of ‘Bugsy Malone’ back in June. Since then, the cast has been busy learning songs, dance routines and lines on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s each week. In September, Year Seven were all offered the chance to audition to gain a part in the chorus. The standard of audition was very high which made it even harder for the Performing Arts Team to choose who would gain a place in the chorus. Since then, the Year Seven’s joined the rest of the cast for rehearsals, which have focused on Act One so far. All those involved are working incredibly hard and are particularly enthusiastic in the scenes with the Splurge Guns! For any students who want to be involved in supporting the production, a ‘Backstage Club’ will be starting in November which will allow them to learn about all the technical elements such as lighting, set, costume and props. The performances of ‘Bugsy Malone’ take place from 4th-7th February 2014 at 7.00 pm in the College Theatre. Tickets will be available from the school Finance Office from early January 2014.

Arts News contd... Dance - Hannah Whitehouse Hannah Whitehouse has had a fantastic start to the new term. Hannah performed for the Worcester Dance Teachers at their network meeting held at the Angel Centre in Worcester. Performing her own choreography ‘Agoraphobia’, which was first premiered in the Summer Dance Show, Hannah performed alongside both primary and 6th form students which included ex Bishop Perowne dancers, Araon Bennett, Emily May and Dani Giblin who are now in their final year of A level dance. Her work was greeted with great enthusiasm by the watching teachers of GCSE dance from across the county as well as the Arts Advisor for Worcestershire, Steve Wilson and director of Dance Fest Rose Beeston. Hannah has also successfully auditioned for the Worcestershire county dance company ‘Wi’re Youth’, who are resident at Bishop Perowne. This is a huge success for Hannah as she auditioned with the crème de crème of dancers from Worcester, Hereford and Evesham. Wi’re, run by Rachael Alexander, performs at dance platforms across the county and works with professional choreographers. Hannah joined the company for their first rehearsal last week and is looking forward to her first performance in the New Year.

Motionhouse Dance Company - At Malvern Theatres On the 5th November the Years 9 & 10 GCSE Dance students will visit Malvern Theatres to see a performance by the world renowned dance company 'Motionhouse'. The performance, entitled 'Broken', combines athletic dance with intricate digital imagery and original music - contrasting the caves of our ancient ancestors with modern apartments of glass and steel in a mythical, energetic and athletic style of movement. Motionhouse will give our students a perfect example of high-energy dance interpretation and a solid example of choreography at its best. As well as being highly entertaining it will also support their curriculum learning through the range of movement, technique, and expression that Motionhouse are renowned for using in their performance style. Many thanks to Rachael and Vamos for involving our students in such a creative and dynamic workshop and to the Kings School for hosting what was an extremely memorable event.

Drama Visit - Malvern Theatres A group of Year 10 and 11 students visited Malvern Theatres on Friday 20th September to see a performance of some new and original writing for the stage. The play, 'Elysian Fields' explored the idea of the afterlife as an actual place, where guides are waiting to move us on to where we need to be, where it is possible to meet others that we have known in our lives or from any time in history and in which much soul searching is the order of the day. Our students are also lucky enough to have the playwright, Nick Wilkes, visiting Bishop Perowne sometime in the near future to involve them in a workshop based on the themes of his play. Nick has written ten plays to date and is currently writer in residence at Malvern Theatres. The workshop will also tie in with study in PSHCCCE and Careers and Guidance, as it will give our students the opportunity to look at careers in both producing theatre and in performance work. Both students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the evening and were left with a sense of it having been a thought-provoking experience. Seeing live professional theatre is also a powerful way in which to support curriculum learning in Drama and also to widen the students' appreciation of theatre in general - particularly as this was an opportunity to experience locally produced work.

Arts News contd... Vamos and Bishop Perowne Students in Partnership at The Kings School. Bishop Perowne has worked in partnership with Vamos Theatre Company now for many years. It has been a highly successful partnership and one that has given hundreds of our students the opportunity to be involved in drama and theatre work of the highest possible quality. Vamos have performed almost all of their major productions in our Theatre and involved many of our students in post performance workshops. Every year our students audition for the Vamos Youth Theatre, which meets in their base at the Worcester Arts Workshop, many of them being successful and gaining a place despite stiff competition. This year two of our year 10 students, Milly Haywood and Anoushka Clarke-Newell, became the latest to join the ranks of the Vamos Youth. We therefore sprang at the opportunity, when it arose, to organise a joint venture with the Kings School in Worcester to take part in a Vamos mask and physical theatre workshop. Fourteen of our year 10 and 11 students joined up with sixteen of the Kings School students in their drama studio for an exciting and impressive two hours lead by Rachael Savage - Artistic Director of Vamos. The workshop focused on such skills as physical movement, gesture, communication and audience relationships when working in full mask. Rachael expertly brought the two groups together and both Kings and Bishops students had an extremely enjoyable time whilst also developing their skills as a tremendous pace. Joint arts projects between the Kings School and Bishop Perowne are something that we hope to develop many more of in the near future. The Theatre Managers from both schools are already in the process of organising to visit each other along with students interested in the technical aspects of performance and to share facilities and ideas. An Arts partnership offers many opportunities for the students of both schools and also for staff in the sharing of ideas and projects.

Arts News contd... Author Visit - At The Kings School, Worcester A group of Year 7, 8 and 9 students were recently invited to the Kings School in Worcester to take part in an event to celebrate reading and literacy. Children's author, Michelle Paver, a recent winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, gave the students an inspirational presentation on her life and work. The students were delighted to hear about the kind of books she has written, what her life is like as a writer and about the different characters and stories that she has created. She talked specifically about her latest novel, 'The Burning Shadow', giving students an insight into the inspiration that resulted in her writing the book. Students were also given the opportunity to buy one of Ms Paver's books and to have it personally signed by the author. This proved for many to be a highlight of the day and completed what was an exciting and inspirational day. A big thanks go to Kings School for inviting us to the author visit event and for making it such a memorable day for our students.

Community Fine Arts‌ Partnership with Yamazaki Mazak UK Bishop Perowne is not just a Performing Arts College - we are a Performing and Fine Arts College - the latter of those disciplines developing some of our most effective and important work within our community - linking our college with adults, children, artists, community groups and industry - in a way that is far more subtle but equally as effective as the performing arts. Probably our most successful relationship has been with Yamazaki Mazak U.K. Ltd. Last year the Group Managing Director for the Company, Marcus Burton, commissioned our Year 11 students to produce images that could be used for their Christmas card. Five students were shortlisted to present their work to Mr Burton and marketing managers for the UK and Europe. Two images were finally chosen and have been used in cards all over the world. Students have been asked again this year to produce images for the 2013 Mazak Christmas card and short listing of their work takes place soon. They will also be taking a trip to Mazak to present work they completed following their visit at the end of last year.

St Richards Hospice - Big Draw The 2013 Big Draw runs from 1st October to 3rd November in fifteen countries, with more than 200,000 people of all ages expected to take part in 900+ events. Hundreds of new and enjoyable drawing activities connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, and those who think they can't. Since its launch in 2000, The Big Draw has successfully supported the Campaign for Drawing’s aims by encouraging everyone to draw. Big Draw events highlight the power of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. This year students will be visiting St Richards Hospice and drawing as much as they can. Our theme this year is 'Yesterdays treasures - a gift for tomorrow'. Hospice users will bring in family treasures/ memorabilia to be drawn at the Hospice. The drawings (or copies of them)can then be passed on with the items to the families. There will be creative writing activities alongside the drawing activities but the BIG DRAW focuses mainly on drawing.

Arts News contd... It is hoped that the schools involved may also continue with the drawings and experiment with different techniques to present the images in a more futuristic way or in different medium. There is also scope to link with photography. Another possibility is a historic link through glass. There is a lovely stained glass window at the Hospice which students could draw and then maybe explore in their own way to represent a similar image with glass. The theme is open and can be adapted to suit the schools specialities and interests. When King’s School visited they were focusing on portraiture which fitted in well with our portrait theme at that time and was a good link for their Y9 students. It is up to individual schools/ teachers to see how we can link in a mutually beneficial way. However it works out - it promises to be a memorable event for all involved and one to which our students will make an exciting and creative contribution.

Young Enterprise Young Enterprise (2012 – 2013) – Prestige Prestige has now officially been liquidated as a company and no longer trades. After paying our shareholders, company tax, a salary to the students involved and bonuses where applicable the account had £100 remaining. This was donated to St Richard’s Hospice, Thursday 10th October during an assembly. This marks the second payment of £100 to St Richard’s Hospice as part of Prestige’s commitment to supporting local charities.

Young Enterprise (2013 – 2014) – Ignite

A very positive start made so far this year. We have chosen our job roles Alice Collins – Managing Director, Charlotte Gwilliam – Operations Director, Jade Clarke – Company Secretary, Natasha Forsyth – Sales Director and Assistant Managing Director, Samuel Savage – IT Director, Fraser Williams – Marketing Director, Tyler Henderson – Human Resources Director and Jack WoodwardSpalding – Finance Director.

We have undertaken market research at our open evening to ask potential customers which company name they preferred. A choice of Ignite or State of Matter was offered. Ignite was the clear winner and we have designed a strapline of ‘Melt it!, Shape It!, Love It!’.

We are actively involved in bottle slumping as our chosen product. We wish to focus on the sustainability award and are collecting used bottles from friends/family and local businesses. Students are researching different bottle slumping options either chopping boards, dip bowls, lime/lemon slice trays, wall hangings and mobile phone stands. We are now making decisions on selling prices, uniform, an online presence, gift wrapping and distribution outlets. Our company advisors from Young Enterprise, Mazak and Andrew Hemming an independent business consultant have assisted us so far on our journey and have suggested we approach national companies to sell our products on behalf of Ignite. We are looking forward to the local trade fairs including the Victorian Christmas Fayre on Saturday 30th November in the Cloisters at Worcester Cathedral and our feeder primary schools Christmas Fayre’s during November and December. You are very welcome to come and join us.

History Department News Contd... History department students hear the testimony of a holocaust survivor at King's School As part of the partnership between Bishop Perowne and Kings school, the Bishop Perowne History department took GCSE History students to hear the testimony of Mrs Janine Webber a Holocaust survivor at Kings school yesterday evening. Mrs Janine Webber shared her very moving and emotional story of how she survived the Holocaust. Mrs Webber was a Polish Jew who was living in a small town in Poland when the Nazis invaded. She lived in a flat with her little brother, her mother, grandmother and her father. Whilst living in this flat they became aware that their block would shortly be cleared. As a result Janine's mother and father dug a hiding hole into the floor under a wardrobe which is where Janine, her brother and mother hid. Sadly there was not enough room for the rest of the family and so her father and grandmother hid in the loft. When the Nazis searched the flat they found Janine's father and grandmother. They threw her grandmother down the stairs and Janine does not know what happened to her, she simply disappeared like so many victims of the holocaust. Janine's father was taken away by the Nazis and shot. Shortly after this Janine and her mother and brother ended up moving to a ghetto where Janine's mother caught typhus and died in a wet cold cellar surrounded by rats. Janine and her brother then went into hiding with two separate polish families, Janine's brother was then killed. In this part of the talk Janine stated that the way he died was horrible but she was too emotional to share this part of her story. Janine was then hidden with her aunt in a hole under ground with thirteen other people for almost a year. This caused Janine to have muscle wastage as she was unable to walk or stand for a year. Eventually Janine was able, thanks to her aunt and some false papers, to get a place at a convent. Janine then spent time at the convent and a priests house before eventually getting a job at eleven years old as a housemaid. She was able to survive the holocaust and was reunited with her aunt after the war. What was left of Janine's family then moved to France where Janie grew up. At the age of twenty four she came to Britain to learn English and fell in love with an English gentleman. She is now married with two children and two grandchildren and she has tried to instil in them tolerance and an understanding of all races and religions. The students and staff at Bishop Perowne found this both a moving and interesting experience.

Maths Department News Connect Four Arrives In Maths Department Started in Arts Week, the two ‘Connect Four’ games commissioned by the Mathematics Department were delivered on Monday 16th September. Designed and laser cut the 7 x 8 game gives many more options over the commercial 6 x 7 game. Here we see Ms Gorna modelling one of the games. Standing over one metre high, the games have been treated with Cuprinol outdoor stain, and as such should be safe to leave outside. In pleasant afternoon sunshine, and overseen by Mr Varey, Mr Jeeves and Mr Reeves empty the discs ready for the inaugural game; a challenge between mathematical intellects. In a brutal and challenging game Varey overcame stiff opposition, cunning, and shrewd play beating Reeves into submission. Accepting defeat graciously, Reeves threw his remaining discs on the floor saying that there were ‘too many holes’. It is planned to hold a challenge, knock out competition between staff and students.

Music Department News WIFYS SING UK 2013 The Worcester International Festival for Young Singers (WIFYS) took place from 19 – 27 July 2013, when around 400 young people came to the UK in their choirs for a week-long festival of workshops and concerts, culminating in a spectacular Gala Concert in Worcester Cathedral and including the world premiere of a specially commissioned work from UK composer Bob Chilcott. I was lucky enough to be part of the UK choir (and it meant I missed the last three days of school!). It was organised by Sing UK, which is a national, not-for-profit organisation committed to providing exceptional, quality singing opportunities – for young people in particular. Working with partners in the field of education, music and community development, they create programmes to meet the needs and aspirations of local communities. Sing UK has at its heart a small and dedicated team with many years’ experience in music education and a passion for creating access and opportunity for all. This was an amazing opportunity to talk and meet people from all around the world from places such as China, Belgium and Spain. Everyone was really friendly, always giving one another compliments and positive feedback. The leaders and composers that lead each of the different ateliers were very different, interesting and inspiring. They were really helpful and everyone loved working with them. The warm ups were unique, interesting and fun. Bob Chilcott’s world premiere performance was very nice and it felt a real privilege to be the first to have sung it. The piano accompaniment was beautiful and with the drums it complimented the vocal parts as well. The composer from Iceland had a very strange piece but I think we should have had a bit more time to work on the song she gave us. Carlo Pavesse, another music leader, was Italian. He was crazy but came up with some very creative ideas. His way of working on one thing eg. Dynamics and then, say time, breaking the performance down into parts was something I had not done before. How we said certain words was very good too. Finally the Finnish leader got the group together to do one song with the theme of fiesta so it was really fun and sounded amazing when we all came together to do it in the final performance. Next year, as part of the nation’s commemorative events marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, Sing UK will be undertaking a very special project which will culminate in a performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man – a Mass for Peace on 28 September in London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Sport Department News contd... Lacrosse comes to Bishop Perowne Over the first half term we have been running a Lacrosse club for all years that has been a real success especially with the Year 11 girls. The hope is to get some fixtures with local schools in the lead up to Christmas. The club is open to everyone if you would still like to attend. On the 23rd October we will be holding our fifth Olympic Legacy Day, we are hoping for over 400 students to take part in Football, Badminton, Table Tennis and Netball. The day will be run for the students by the students and will be part of he Community sports programme. Year 10 Rugby A strong performance ended in heartbreak in the District cup quarter final. After a tight start to the game Chantry started to dominate at the break down. Some strong tackling by our forwards kept us in the match but as time ran on we became tired and Chantry ran in a couple of late tries to win the match 29-5. Cross Country Year 5 On the 27th September 150 children form Claines Northwick St Barnabas and St Georges arrived at our fields on a bright and breezy afternoon, perfect conditions for cross country running. Students from year 9 took on leadership roles taking charge of groups of 15 children. They took the warm up, explained the course and gave advice on how to run the race successfully. They then went to their marshalling positions to encourage all of the runners. The competition began with the girls race they set off at a fast pace and by the time they reached the bottom field began to settle into a steady pace. Ella Hooper Claines took Gold, Florence Powell Northwick Silver and Shanda Taylor St Barnabas Bronze. The boys set off at a good pace which many of them kept up all the way round. Ben Harle took Gold Northwick, Elijah Martin Silver Northwick and Ben Rawlins Bronze St Georges.
