Academic Success: The Curriculum Offer

Bishop Perowne Church of England College offers a broad and balanced curriculum centred around a robust core of traditional GCSE subjects. Our tradition of outstanding academic success is evident within English, Mathematics and Science. It is further enhanced by a wide range of option qualifications that are understood and valued by further education colleges, universities and employers alike. In addition all students follow courses in Information Technology, Religious Education and Physical Education.

A strong, flourishing partnership with the Kings’ School Worcester which includes a wealth of enrichment opportunities and sixth form bursaries, further augments our outstanding provision. We support our students throughout their academic careers with close personal attention, the tracking of results against targets and a warm recognition of positive attainment at all levels. Our students are encouraged to attain at the very highest grades their ability allows; our curriculum gives them options to develop their individual talents.

‘A culture of learning and achievement where students and their work are highly valued.’ OFSTED

The Care, Guidance and Support of students is a crucial feature of life at Bishop Perowne. Each student has a Form Tutor to act as their pastoral and academic guide throughout their five years with us. Our form groups contain a small number of students from each year group reflecting a supportive family structure.

Our Community Leaders are all experienced senior members of staff ensuring that we maintain an inclusive and well ordered environment in which students feel safe and valued. We also employ two family liaison staff whose role is to nurture those students who may need additional support and provision.

Older students are given the responsibility for supporting and aiding younger students, in particular our new Year 7 intake. Form groups are combined into one of our four communities: Duckworth, Fearnley, Perrins or Tilley, which in turn are headed by a Community Leader.

Church School and Arts’ College Our designation as a Specialist College in the Performing Arts ensures that our students have access to facilities and experiences that will benefit them both academically across the curriculum, socially, and personally. We have frequent performances in theatre, musical theatre, dance and music. We also exhibit our artwork both locally and nationally. Some students may gain a place with us through their ability within the arts: auditions are held annually.

Our facilities include: • Professional standard Theatre • Sprung floor Dance Studio • Two Apple Mac computer suites • Television Studio with ‘green screen’

As a Church of England College, Bishop Perowne offers each student the opportunity to flourish within a caring Christian community. Our students partake in weekly acts of collective worship, a termly Eucharist service, special service of remembrance led by our Student Worship Team and our popular Carol Service held in the Cathedral. We are fully comprehensive in intake embracing students of all faiths and those of no faith, valuing them equally.

‘The school, through its distinctive Christian character, is Outstanding at meeting the needs of all learners.’ SIAS

Enrichment and Partnerships On any weekday afternoon many students will take up the option of one of our Extended Day activities. From competitive sport to rehearsals for public performances to exam revision classes, our students find activities to suit their talents and to enhance their education. Our unique partnership with The King’s School Worcester has given rise to debating competitions, a Latin course, Mathematics challenges and, most notably, our shared astro-turf facility.

Our visits include outward bounds activities in Llanrug, trips to significant European battlefields, a ski trip and a varied range of visits during our annual Arts’ Week. Many of our examination courses include trips to relevant venues and discussions with experienced professionals in order to broaden the students’ experience of the workplace.
