ith each new season comes a wave of refreshed energy and enthusiasm for the excitement of what lies ahead. The changing of the seasons should also give us pause to appreciate all that we’ve accomplished in the past quarter and anticipate the opportunities that glimmer in the quarter to come. We are a community of greatness – from expanding businesses to year-round tourism to a strong and steady economy – Bismarck-Mandan is truly a great place to call home. Speaking of a great economy, thank you Starion Bank for sponsoring the 2019 Economic Outlook Forum. The panel discussions, along with the University of Mary’s annual economic survey and Dr. Tutterow’s presentation, provided for a very rich event that highlighted the key areas of growth and concern in our region and across the nation. Here are some highlights that stood out from this year’s economic outlook survey: • The demand for employees continues to grow with 37% of survey respondents indicated they would be increasing their number of employees in 2019 and 58% holding constant. • An overwhelming majority, 70%, of surveyed businesses are looking to 2019 as a more profitable year than 2019. • With a tight labor market, employee compensation is likely to increase for 68% of surveyed businesses, with 29% holding wages constant. • The survey area with the strongest response was in sales revenue, with 82% of surveyed respondents anticipating an increase in sales revenue. Fostering a healthy and diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem is an essential element for sustaining a growing regional economy. Through the business development component of the Chamber EDC, Nathan Schneider and Jaime Sabot have positioned the Chamber EDC to be an active partner in recent entrepreneurial events. I encourage you to attend One Million Cups on Wednesdays at 9:00am at Dakota Stage Theater to learn about the BismarckMandan’s entrepreneurial community. You will be impressed with the businesses brewing and products being developed in our region. As we roll into April, the state legislature enters the home stretch of the 2019 session. The Chamber EDC team continues to advocate for those issues that our membership and Government Affairs Committee have identified as priorities, including infrastructure and workforce. NORTH DAKOTA TOURISM GETS CREATIVE WITH LEAN BUDGETS By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk
North Dakota Tourism has to be smart with how it markets itself. In the past two bienniums, the Tourism Division budget has been cut as legislators met the challenge of contracting state budgets. But this isn’t cause to complain.

“Our staff rises to that challenge,” said Sara Otte Coleman, Director of Tourism Division for the North Dakota Department of Commerce. “It has made us more efficient and smarter with our resources.” With lean budgets, the Tourism Division pours every dollar they can into marketing the State of North Dakota. But that doesn’t mean they neglect market research and data analytics.

One valuable tool for the Tourism Division is Arrivalist. The Arrivalist software enables marketers to understand the in-market movement patterns of both their current and prospective consumers. When the Tourism Division drives traffic to their website through advertising, the usage is tracked through cookies. Then, when an individual travels to North Dakota, Arrivalist pings when and where the person arrived in state. It shows the time between when the individual first saw an ad and when they arrived in state. It also maps out the top states for visitors to North Dakota. Top states and provinces for tourism to North Dakota are Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. That is where the Tourism Division targets their marketing efforts. The bulk of Tourism Division’s media buy is in Minnesota. The state has close proximity with an easy drive. Otte Coleman described North Dakota as “definitely a drive destination.” In 2018, the Tourism Division purchased large-scale wall wraps in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Over the course of six months of exposure, Otte Coleman said the advertising generated high social media traffic. For several years, the Tourism Division has promoted North Dakota through sporting events. 4 4 Connection
“The beauty of sporting events is that it’s one thing that people watch live and are captive audiences,” Otte Coleman said. “That has been a consistent results-driver for us.” When Super Bowl LII was hosted in Minneapolis, North Dakota tourism gained an even greater audience. Previously, the Tourism Division had advertised within US Bank Stadium, but advertising costs skyrocketed for the event. Otte Coleman’s team got creative and started looking at other options. For eight weeks surrounding the Super Bowl, a Minneapolis Light Rail train was wrapped in North Dakota tourism advertising. The Tourism Division has also purchased wraps for delivery trucks running in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Otte Coleman said they target urban centers intentionally. “Those are the (people) we are trying to motivate, because they want to get out of town,” Otte Coleman said. Illinois has been an emerging market for many years, and Otte Coleman said they have been finally able to work Chicago media into the budget. North Dakota tourism received coverage in the Chicago Tribune and purchased corresponding ads.
CONNECTION | CHAMBER EDC FEATURE Next year, the Tourism Division is planning a takeover of Chicago Union Station for 13 weeks. A section of Chicago Union Station will be wrapped in North Dakota advertising, and a coordinating event is being planned. Otte Coleman said the job of the Tourism Division is to create the umbrella marketing that inspires individuals to research and then embark upon a trip to North Dakota. “We can funnel people down to the specific operators and experiences,” Otte Coleman said. “There are 2,900 tourism businesses statewide. We want them to profit. It’s my job to drive the tourism to them.” Of the $3 billion that visitors spent in North Dakota, that money was spread far beyond the 2,900 tourism businesses in the state. The largest percentage of that money was spend on food and beverage, followed by retail, transportation, lodging, and recreation.
“If we aren’t attracting those discretionary dollars, if (visitors) aren’t coming here, they’re going to spend those dollars somewhere else,” Otte Coleman said. In the long-run, tourism advertising can help with workforce development. Otte Coleman pointed to a study done by Longwoods International on North Dakota tourism advertising’s “halo effect.” The study indicated that effective tourism marketing improved consumer perceptions. The study compared opinions of people who had seen North Dakota tourism ads versus those who hadn’t. Of those who had seen North Dakota ads, 13 percent more perceived North Dakota as a “good place to attend college;” 12 percent more said the state was a “good place to start a career;” and 12 percent more said it was a “good place to start a business.” “We’re the first date of a long-term relationship,” Otte Coleman said. “Most people visit first. They’re not going to move some place they haven’t visited. We’re the lead generator. It opens their eyes to the opportunities that are here.”

Bismarck-Mandan Tourism The Bismarck-Mandan Convention & Visitors Bureau has found a niche in promoting the community as a place to host meetings, conventions, and sporting events. Last year multi-day meetings, conventions, and events brought in 347,000 delegates to Bismarck-Mandan. They spent $31.7 million while here. Regional, national and international visitors spent $11.6 million. The Bismarck-Manda CVB goes up against Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot when bidding for meetings and conventions. “It is very competitive,” said Sheri Grossman, CEO of Bismarck-Mandan Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We’ve had a pretty good success rate on regional, national business if we get them here to look at us. We’ve had very few places that once they come to look haven’t booked one of their events here.” As the state capital, Bismarck naturally hosts a lot of government meetings. However, sporting events are also big in Bismarck-Mandan. Last summer the community hosted the Special Olympics North America Softball Championship. Grossman said not a weekend goes by when there isn’t a sporting competition taking place in Bismarck-Mandan. The CVB has a staff person dedicated to attracting sporting events to the community. In recent years, the CVB has retooled how they market Bismarck-Mandan. “Advertising had been focusing on the fun things to do here,” Grossman said. “Meeting planners don’t care about that so much. They want to know that we have the amenities, meeting rooms, hotels. Once (events) are booked, then their attendees want to know the fun things to do here.” Last year the CVB team made more than 5,600 contacts through conversations, meetings, and email. Of that, 1,500 were prospecting calls to new groups that had never been to Bismarck-Mandan. These efforts generated more than 500 bookings, meetings, and events. “Some businesses have a direct impact,” Grossman said, “hotels, restaurants, gas stations. When those businesses do better, they spend more in the community. By the time the dollars trickle through the community, it touches every business.”

JOB SHADOW WEEK CONNECTS EMPLOYERS WITH THE EMERGING WORKFORCE By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk
The State Historical Society of North Dakota is an organization lucky enough to have a dedicated volunteer base. The Historical Society engages all ages from retirees volunteering in the artifact collection to elementary school field trips at the North Dakota Heritage Center. But one age group that they don’t often engage is high school students.
The students transcribed information on the artifacts; they counted objects and checked quantities; and they rehoused the artifacts in archival bags. The job shadow students were so engaged in the project that two of the three students returned the next day to continue volunteering on the same project. One of those students has since become a regular volunteer at the Historical Society.
Job Shadow Week, hosted by the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC, brought an opportunity to tap into that age group.
“Honestly, it was wonderful,” Murray said. “The (job shadow students) were really engaged. They asked really good questions. They really didn’t blink no matter what we threw at them. They did manual labor. They did some work where they really had to focus. They seemed to have a lot of fun, and that made it a lot of fun for us.”
“That age group is really busy,” said Wendi Field Murray, Archaeology Collections Manager for the State Historical Society of North Dakota. “We don’t have a lot of engagement with high school students. It was really refreshing that there is a program that connects kids in high school to the things that are going on locally.” During Job Shadow Week, which was held February 25-March 1, the Historical Society hosted three local high school students. Murray and a colleague had a four-hour block of job shadow work set up for the students. The students sorted artifacts in the lab. They built boxes for curation. They learned about the curation and long-term preservation of objects. Finally, they had a chance to rehabilitate an older collection that had been donated in the 1980s but had not been properly stored for long-term preservation.

Job Shadow Week was founded in 2016 by the former Bimarck-Mandan Development Association. For the past four years it has been held in late-February to early-March. In 2019, 62 employers offered 100 different job shadow opportunities to 216 registered students. “This is one of the workforce development initiatives that we promote in Bismarck-Mandan as a way to connect the community, the employers and the students,” said Jaime Sabot, Workforce Development Coordinator for Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC. “The objective is workforce development — to retain workforce, attract talent to our community; to highlight the employers; to support relationships with the schools.”

CONNECTION | CHAMBER EDC FEATURE Job Shadow Week is designed for ages 16 and up with the most common participants students in high school or college. In addition to participation from all of the high schools and colleges in Bismarck-Mandan, Sabot received inquiries from the communities of Napoleon, Steele, Hazelton, Beulah, and Glen Ullin. “I want those surrounding communities to feel welcome coming to Bismarck-Mandan,” Sabot said. “A lot of Beulah, Hazen individuals came to Bismarck for college. Having those connections made, having opportunities for internships when they come to school here is important.”
Mahlum hosted two communications students. “We are looking for a (communications) intern, and this was a perfect opportunity to talk to a couple of students who would be in the correct position to be interns,” Mahlum said. “I hadn’t thought about (internships) as an opportunity coming out of this.” Before participating in Jon Shadow Week, engineering firm Bartlett & West had offered job shadowing opportunities on a sporadic basis.

Q: Briefly tell us the history of HIT, Inc. A: Housing, Industry, Training Inc. was formed (HIT, Inc.) on August 20th, 1979 by a group of parents with a family member with a disability and with other civic minded citizens. These original board members represented the two local citizen groups of the Mandan Association of Retarded Citizens and the Bis/Man Association of the Handicapped. HIT was created to provide exactly what the name states…housing, industry, and training opportunities for individuals with physical and/or developmental disabilities. We officially changed our name to HIT, Inc. in 2008.
We have grown significantly over the years and expanded our service delivery area. We provided various services in a geographic area that covers the Montana border to the Missouri River and Grassy Butte to the South Dakota border. We have also expanded the types of services we offer to include: • Services to people with brain injuries through Dakota Alpha and Dakota Pointe. • Services to infants (birth to 3 years old) with developmental delays through Early Intervention. • Services to low-income families through West River Head Start • Services to people with intellectual disabilities through multiple programs that include group homes, independent supported living, family supports, day supports, and employment supports. We accomplish all of this through a workforce that includes 330 full time and 220 part time employees.

CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within the organization A: I have been with HIT, Inc. for 26 years, 19 years as the CEO. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Masters of Management from the University of Mary. I believe in giving back to this great community and have served on numerous boards throughout the years. As the CEO, I work with the Board of Directors to guide the company as we strive to meet our mission of “Supporting people with disabilities through self-directed services that promote independence, dignity and respect.” On a daily basis, my role is support the management team and try to ensure that they have the tools and resources to do their jobs. Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted HIT, Inc.? A: The growth of Bismarck-Mandan has positively impacted HIT, Inc. by bringing in new employment possibilities, housing options, and entertainment opportunities for the people with disabilities that HIT supports. HIT currently supports 600+ people in our disabilities and has more than doubled in size since 2009. Growth also has challenges as new businesses compete for staff. Turnover has increased as there are so many options available for Full-Time and Part-Time work. Q: What industry trends are taking place? A: One of the biggest trends is also one of our biggest challenges. A shrinking workforce due to that lack of people that are considering entering the health and human services industry workforce. North Dakota is not alone, the demand for employees in this industry is becoming a national epidemic.
Q: What does the future of HIT, Inc. look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: The future of HIT, Inc. will include continuing to work to identify unmet needs of people with disabilities and lowincome families that reside in Western North Dakota and then look for ways to assist these people lead independent and productive lives. As an industry, the move toward more individualized services that target individual goals will continue. Q: HIT, Inc. became a member in 1986, why do you continue to renew each year? A: HIT, Inc. has been a member for 20+ years because we value the relationships we have created with other Chamber members. These relationships have resulted in furthering the employment opportunities for people with disabilities. We have accomplished this in two ways: 1. helping match people with disabilities who are seeking employment with employer seeking to fill vacant positions 2. creating internal employment opportunities through business’ such as West River Produce. Q: What should Chamber EDC members know about HIT, Inc. that may assist them? A: One of the misconceptions that HIT, Inc. faces is that it is solely a Mandan based company. HIT, Inc. actually provides services throughout Bismarck and Mandan in residential and community settings. In order for people to receive services, they must first receive a referral from the North Dakota Department of Human Services. This process allows people to choose an agency that best meets their needs. HIT, Inc. works closely with NDDHS and other providers to best serve the people in our community.
Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: The Developmental and Intellectual Disability Field is emerging on the national and local levels. This has led to the creation and growth of advocacy and professional accreditation groups such as ANCOR (the American Network of Community Options and Resources) and Council on Quality Leadership (CQL). This has led to higher standards for the training and development of staff, thereby ensuring a higher quality of support provided to people with disabilities. HIT has embraced and championed these changes by adding training for our staff, chairing state-wide committees, and participating in local advocacy groups.

2019 LEGISLATIVE SESSION UPDATE The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is actively engaged in the ongoing 2019 legislative session, communicating with our area delegation and advocating on behalf of our members to encourage a strong regional business climate.
WORKFORCE
Guiding us through the current session is our 2019 Legislative Agenda. The agenda was developed in partnership with the Chamber EDC Government Affairs Committee, business members and area officials. As detailed in our legislative agenda, the organization has identified infrastructure, behavioral health and workforce as priorities. While the Chamber EDC team will monitor various pieces of legislation impacting business, these priorities will be our area of focus in the months ahead.
Workforce is not only a priority for Bismarck-Mandan, but our entire state. Particularly in the technical & skilled trades. Both HB1171 and SB2039 aim to encourage enrollment of students in technical programs that lead to employment in high-demand or emerging occupations following graduation.

INFRASTRUCTURE HB1066 – Operation Prairie Dog HB1066 would take the place of past hub cities legislation to provide infrastructure funding to both oil and non-oil producing counties and cities throughout North Dakota. Infrastructure improvement and maintenance is critical to the development of North Dakota and our area businesses. The Chamber EDC believes Operation Prairie Dog would provide much needed essential infrastructure funding throughout the state and testified in support of the bill at the January 15 hearing of the House Finance and Taxation Committee. UPDATE: After receiving a DO PASS from the Senate Finance & Taxation Committee in early March, HB1066 was PASSED through the Senate with a vote of 46-0. HB1171 & SB2039 – Encouraging Workforce Attraction & Retention
While there are differences between HB1171 and SB2039, they both aim to encourage talent retention and attraction in our state’s technical & skilled trades. Following a series of recent amendments, one key difference for HB1171 is that it would create a scholarship program for interested students as opposed to a loan repayment program proposed in SB2039. North Dakota’s ability to retain and attract the next generation of talent is essential to our state’s continued development. The Chamber EDC believes both SB2039 and HB1171 are bills that can encourage students to enter high-demand professions and to remain in North Dakota. SB2039 is currently with the House Appropriations Committee and HB1171 recently received a DO PASS from the Senate Appropriations Committee. LEADERSHIP BISMARCK-MANDAN Media Day Media Day hosted a News Director panel with representatives from TV, radio, and print: Tia Streeter of KX News, Dave Thompson of Prairie Public Radio, and Steve Wallick of The Bismarck Tribune. Each panelist answered the question, "What is news?" TV: Stories are considered each morning at the morning pitch meeting. Reporters pitch the stories they want to cover each day. Streeter always poses two questions. "Who are you going to interview? Why would anyone care?" Radio: Thompson said he knows news when he sees it. He said he works to make the important story interesting and the interesting story important.

This September, the Chamber EDC and it’s Excellence in Business and Education Committee will honor local celebrities and business at the 15th annual Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan Award Ceremony.
The premier Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC Economic Development event is coming up on May 7th from 11:00AM – 1:00PM at the Baymont Inn & Suites in Mandan.

Impact ED highlights Economic Development as one of the key components of the Chamber EDC’s efforts. In addition to our keynote speaker, Christopher Lloyd of McGuire Woods Consulting, attendees will hear from a panel of recently expanded primary sector local businesses on their impact to the community and why they continue to choose Bismarck-Mandan.
GRANITE AWARD This award is presented annually to a company that has been in business for at least 50 years, has been a Chamber EDC member for the last five years, and has shown a commitment to the community. NEW ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR Any individual who serves as a majority owner and operates or bears principal responsibility for operating a small business with a 3-year record of accomplishment and not more than 10 years. SMALL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR Any individual who owns and operates or who bears principal responsibility for operating a small business. Partners who jointly own and operate a small business can be nominated as a “team,” so long as the number of individuals in the team nomination does not exceed four. FULL HOUSE FOR CHAMBER EDC ECONOMIC OUTLOOK FORUM
On Wednesday, March 13th, the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC along with Starion Bank hosted the 2019 Economic Outlook Forum. Over 280 members attended the half-day forum that held two panel discussions, our presentation of our local survey results and keynote economist speaker, Dr. Roger Tutterow.
The morning started with our legislative panel that included: House Minority Leader Josh Boschee, Speaker of the House Larry Klemin and Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner. We then transitioned to our Industry panel which featured: Chris Baumgartner, Senior VP of Member Services & Administration with Basin Electric, Dr. Tutterow, presenting at the 2019 Economic Outlook Forum, stated manufacturing is making Dr. David Ripplinger, Assistant Professor a resurgence in America. With energy costs and labor costs assisting in the revival. in the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics with North Dakota State University, Kurt Schley, President of CHI St. Presenting Alexius Health, and Jennifer Wilson, General Manager of Sponsor:t Kirkwood Mall. BISMARCK PUBLIC SCHOOL PROJECTS NEARING COMPLETION Contributed by Dr. Jason Hornbacher
This fall, nearly all of the new middle and high school spaces will be finished. Thanks to local voters who in 2017 overwhelmingly approved a $57.5 million bond for five projects. The renovation and additions at Horizon and Wachter Middle Schools are complete. Both schools added classrooms, music, and physical education space. Lighting will be upgraded in the Knaak Center so volleyball can be held there this fall. I’d also like to bring you up to speed about the sale of Saxvik Elementary School. We sold the building to Inspire Family Fellowship to be used as a church and community outreach center. The City of Bismarck has approved the zoning change and financing for the project has been secured we hope to close on the deal in early April.

MANDAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVES $500 GRANT FROM CAPITAL CREDIT UNION Mandan Public Schools is pleased to announce it has received $500 from Capital Credit Union in support of AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination.
These funds will support the AVID’s mission; to close the gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. "We are so thankful for this generous donation from our community partner, Capital Credit Union. These funds will enable us to enhance literacy in our AVID Program. Mandan Public Schools is full of students who possess the desire to attend college and the willingness to work hard. These students are often the first in their families to attend college and may be from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID gives these kids the opportunity to be college and career ready," said Mr. Jeff Fastnacht, Asst. Superintendent, Mandan Public School Dist. #1. Capital Credit Union, chartered initially in North Dakota in 1936, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by each of its more than 30,000 members. Capital Credit Union returns profits to each member through fewer and lower fees, lower loan interest rates and higher savings interest rates. STARION BANK CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH DONATIONS, VOLUNTEERING At Starion Bank, giving back to the community has always been a core value. In 2019, the bank is celebrating 50 years of Larson family ownership and, as part of the anniversary, the bank is donating $500 to the charity of choice for each employee. To date, 54 donations have been given. This is part of the anniversary theme Year of Giving and Caring. In addition to the donations, every employee gets two days of volunteer time off (VTO). “My father and Starion Bank founder Frank Larson has always said, ‘When you go into a town, if the town is doing well you’ll find a community bank behind that town supporting it,’” said Craig Larson, Starion Bank CEO and chairman of the board. “For the past 50 years we have always done what we can to support our communities both financially and with our time. The Year of Giving and Caring honors our employees’ hard work and commitment to their communities by volunteering and donating to organizations that are important to them.”
The organizations that have been selected for donations are often deeply personal and many organizations also are recipients of Starion employees’ time. One employee has become an avid volunteer at a soup kitchen. “I am so grateful that Starion gives back to the community in so many ways,” said Starion employee Angela Schock. “I love to see the community come together to serve, and I love that I can volunteer there with my kids to show them the importance of giving back and helping others in need.” “Starion has always allowed employees to volunteer during business hours, but the VTO takes that a step further,” adds Larson. “Many of these organizations need volunteers as much as they need money. BSC FOUNDATION LAUNCHES $8 MILLION HEALTH SCIENCES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
The Bismarck State College Foundation announces a campaign that will bring the Bismarck State College Health Sciences programs to the main campus, training students in high-demand healthcare careers to better meet vital workforce needs. The project is in response to a statewide healthcare workforce shortage and to give BSC Health Science programs a permanent home as the lease will soon end on the programs’ current downtown training facility. Moving the programs to an existing, vacant facility adjacent to BSC’s main campus will bring health science programs together on BSC’s main campus in a space that can accommodate more students, complete with state-ofthe-art-technology and the equipment needed to prepare for the healthcare jobs of the future. A virtual hospital will be created in the facility to allow innovation and collaboration between the programs, providing more training opportunities in Nursing, Surgical Technology, EMT/Paramedic Technology, Medical Lab Technician, and Certified Nursing Assistant programs.
“The healthcare industry has huge demand for workforce right now, and employment projections show that demand will continue to grow,” said Dr. Larry C. Skogen, BSC president. “We are poised and ready to meet this ever-growing need. One of the cornerstones of Bismarck State College is our responsiveness to workforce needs, leading us to also work with the North Dakota State Legislature to potentially fund and eventually expand the new Health Science facility to accommodate future growth.” The BSC Foundation has begun renovating an existing owned building adjacent to BSC’s campus for the Health Sciences facility. The location will allow for growth of the healthcare programs as well as the convenience of bringing more classes onto campus so students have better access to support services, dining services, tutoring, and more.

For all testicular cancer, the overall survival rate is 95% and with early detection, the prognosis is a 99% survival rate. The cause of testicular cancer is unknown and many men without any risk factors still develop the disease. Surgery is the primary treatment for testicular cancer but chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy may be recommended in a small percentage of men. All men who are going to receive radiation and chemotherapy for testicular cancer should discuss fertility treatment with their doctor. This can lower the sperm count temporarily or permanently, so sperm banking (where sperm is frozen and used at a later date) is an option and should be submitted before treatment is started. Common signs and symptoms of testicular cancer include: dull ache in the groin, painless lump or swelling of the testicle, or a build-up of fluid in the scrotum. With early detection, treatments are less aggressive and more effective than when the cancer is detected at later stages.

He has been with Capital Credit Union since August 2004, most recently as a business credit analyst at the Main Office. About HAWKTREE GOLF COURSE NAMED GRAA TOP 50 PUBLIC RANGE Hawktree Golf Course was recently named one of Golf Range Association of America's (GRAA) top 50 public ranges. LOCAL MANDAN PRINCIPAL NAMED AMONG AMERICA’S BEST Dave Steckler, Red Trail Elementary School, Mandan School District Dave Steckler is among 62 outstanding elementary and middle school principals from across the nation who have been named as a National Distinguished Principals (NDP) by the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the US Department of Education. Steckler is respectful, approachable and perceptive of staff and student’s needs, while at the same time holding all accountable to the highest fidelity. He enhances this accountability through building walkthroughs, goal setting for students and teachers, reflection time, follow up and developing committees for staff feedback. He is continually looking at researched-based models that could be implemented and will improve student achievement, as well as, teacher instruction.
SANFORD HEALTH WELCOMES PULMONOLOGIST Haven Malish, MD, pulmonology, has joined Sanford Clinic in Bismarck. In addition to Marshall Jones pulmonology, Dr. Malish also specializes in critical care and sleep medicine. Dr. Malish graduated from John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and completed his residency in internal medicine from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is board certified in pulmonary disease and sleep medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
