Entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in the development and prosperity of communities, as entrepreneurs are often the catalysts for innovation, economic growth, and social change. These risk takers are individuals who, driven by vision and determination, launch businesses that not only contribute to the local economy but also shape the future of industries. Their ability to identify opportunities, take calculated risks, and create new solutions leads to tangible benefits for society.

At the core of entrepreneurship is the willingness to take risks. Entrepreneurs are individuals who step outside of their comfort zones and commit resources—whether capital, time, or effort—to bring an idea to life, despite the uncertainty of success. This spirit of risk-taking is crucial for economic development. Without entrepreneurs, new ideas would remain untested, and many innovations that have revolutionized industries would not exist - like personal computers, social media platforms, or my smartphone with all those apps I don’t utilize. All of these have transformed the way we live and work and can be traced back to entrepreneurs who dared to invest in ideas that many others considered too risky or unfeasible.

One of the most significant contributions of entrepreneurs is job creation. Small businesses, in particular, are significant to our economy. In communities large and small, entrepreneurs often start businesses that, over time, can expand and hire local workers. The jobs they provide help reduce unemployment, support the local economy, and improve the standard of living for some families. Entrepreneurs also inspire a culture of innovation and problem-solving, encouraging others in the community to pursue their own ventures and contribute to a cycle of economic vitality.

Moreover, entrepreneurs often introduce social change by addressing unmet needs within communities. Many entrepreneurs focus on solving pressing issues such as environmental sustainability, access to education, healthcare, and homelessness. By offering new products or services that serve a social purpose, these leaders create positive ripple effects within their communities. For example, in the design industry I encounter companies that focus on eco-friendly products not only to minimize the environmental impacts of buildings and infrastructure, but to emphasize the sustainable use of natural resources and the reduction of waste which helps me with the creation of spaces that contribute positively to the environment. (And many have an app I can download.)

In addition to their direct contributions to economic and social wellbeing, entrepreneurs help to foster a spirit of resilience and adaptability within a community. By their very nature, entrepreneurs face challenges, setbacks, and failures. Their ability to bounce back, adapt, and continue to pursue their goals sets a powerful example for others. This resilience is contagious, inspiring the people around them to approach obstacles with a problem-solving mindset, which ultimately strengthens the team around them.

At times entrepreneurs can be viewed as troublemakers or pot-stirrers because they challenge some of us old curmudgeons in our traditional ways. However, they bring a fresh perspective, innovative ideas and the agility required to disrupt the status quo. Instead of ignoring or stifling ideas, I challenge you to sit back and really listen. Take in the new perspective and critically think through this “new lens” that could just maybe shake things up in a positive way. And, maybe, with a little patience and guidance, I will learn to utilize all those apps on my smartphone.

Enjoy the February Connection and reach out to some of our local entrepreneurs to help you Move Business Forward. Finally, don’t forget about the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC Annual Dinner on Thursday March 13. If you don’t have a ticket yet –call the Chamber Office and get one! I am looking forward to celebrating the business accomplishments within the community with all of you!

Respectfully,

Business Pitch Challenge is a great tool to help entrepreneurs get their business off the ground and running.

From Ideas to Impact: The Power of Entrepreneurship in Bismarck-Mandan

What does it take to turn dreams into reality? For entrepreneurs in Bismarck-Mandan, it’s a blend of funding, mentorship, networking, adaptability, and plenty of hard work. Bismarck-Mandan offers an ideal environment for entrepreneurs to thrive. Equipped with a supportive community, programs designed to meet them at any stage in their business, and ample businesses to collaborate with, it’s no surprise more and more businesses are succeeding right here in our region.

Entrepreneurs are the “starters” of innovation, solving problems through creativity and ingenuity. Their ability to think beyond ordinary boundaries leads to groundbreaking technologies, products, and services that redefine industries and improve our day to day lives.

Take Pronto Chore, for example—a business founded by two local college students who saw a need for on-demand chore assistance. By developing a platform where people can request help with everyday tasks, and community members can sign up to assist, they built a service that benefits everyone. “I saw this need but didn’t know how to program,” said Vaughn Deinhart founder of Pronto Chore. “I emailed the Dean of Engineering at the University of Mary and he connected me with Michael Storick who’s now my business partner” From this collaboration came an app much like Uber or DoorDash. Pronto Chore operates on an independent contracting model, making connecting people easier than ever. Entrepreneurs like these address market gaps with innovative solutions, driving progress that benefits the local community and economy.

Bismarck-Mandan provides a healthy environment for entrepreneurial success. The region is filled with networking opportunities, funding programs, and business resources, helping entrepreneurs to transition ideas into impactful business ventures.

ONE MILLION CUPS: BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH CONNECTION

Every Wednesday morning, One Million Cups (1MC) is a welcoming space for entrepreneurs and community members to collaborate and innovate. This weekly event helps create connections, nurtures ideas, and supports entrepreneurs as they work through challenges and take on growth opportunities. With its focus on community, 1MC creates a platform where relationships are formed, ideas are refined through collaboration, and mutual support empowers entrepreneurs to keep going.

At the heart of 1MC is the opportunity for entrepreneurs to present their business ideas to a diverse audience. These presentations go beyond pitching—they encourage open dialogue, enabling entrepreneurs to refine their messaging, collect valuable feedback, and access resources to fuel their success. Evan Anderson, a 1MC coordinator, described it as a space where entrepreneurs feel comfortable sharing openly: “Putting an entrepreneur on stage in that friendly environment makes them feel comfortable enough to bear their soul a little.”

Ganya Anderson, another 1MC coordinator, emphasized the program’s culture of encouragement: “If you want to start your own business, talk to people who have done it already. You’re going to find they want to help you succeed. They want you to have that same freedom and upside of having your own business.” This spirit of collaboration is an important mission of 1MC. It empowers entrepreneurs to keep moving their business forward and creates a sense of community as they travel on the new path their business is forging.

Since its 2014 launch, One Million Cups Bismarck has become a pillar of the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. It has hosted over 330 entrepreneurs and community leaders, drawing more than 22,926 attendees. These gatherings provide many opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and visibility for these young businesses.

One Million Cups (1MC) is committed to inclusivity, ensuring that businesses from all industries and sectors are part of the conversation. By fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, 1MC guarantees that every type of business, regardless of size or focus, has the opportunity for exposure and engagement. This inclusive approach not only allows businesses to feel integrated into the innovation shaping the local community, but also supports the group effort toward economic growth. The result is a diverse, interconnected network where entrepreneurs can collaborate, share insights, and collectively drive the development of a thriving local economy.

One Million Cups meets Wednesday morning at 8:30am at Dakota Stage in Bismarck.

THE MANDAN BUSINESS PITCH CHALLENGE: FROM CONCEPT TO SUCCESS

The Mandan Business Pitch Challenge offers entrepreneurs and early-stage startups a platform to change their business ideas into reality. Hosted by the Mandan Tomorrow – Economic Opportunity and Prosperity Committee and supported by organizations like the City of Mandan Business Development and Communications Department, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, and the ND Small Business Development Centers, this competition supports entrepreneurship by providing resources and guidance.

Madison Cermak, Business Development & Communication Director for the City of Mandan, highlighted the program’s evolution: “It started as a way to give entrepreneurs a platform to share their ideas and encourage growth in Mandan. Now, it’s an opportunity to guide businesses from early stages to profitability.” The challenge helps participants refine their plans, secure funding, and get connected with helpful support communities. “It’s all about advancing businesses from concept to launch and beyond,” Cermak added.

An example of the program’s impact is Bubbles and Brews ND, a mobile bar business offering personalized event experiences. Owner Cassidy Hartman, winner of the 2022 Mandan Business Pitch Challenge, shared how the experience added value to their venture. “It pushed us out of our comfort zone and challenged us to focus on our vision. We gained connections, like building relationships with other local businesses, and received invaluable support.”

Hartman praised the collaborative spirit of BismarckMandan: “We have an incredible community that is willing to support each other. It’s a place where you’ll always find someone to collaborate with or cheer you on.” Her story shows how the community’s entrepreneurial ecosystem fosters innovation and progress.

GIZMONICS: A LEGACY OF CREATIVITY AND PROBLEM-SOLVING

Evan and Ganya Anderson, owners of Gizmonics, embody the entrepreneurial spirit of Bismarck-Mandan. Starting in 1999 with an innovative bike repair stand that doubled as a rack, their journey was filled with challenges and lessons. While the product is no longer on the market, their passion for creativity and problem-solving laid the foundation for a successful product development business.

Reflecting on their journey, the Andersons credited the community’s support as a key factor in their success. “With a little effort, you can get involved in something meaningful and make a difference,” Evan said. Ganya added, “Even in competitive industries, we see people coming together to support each other. It’s a uniquely collaborative environment.”

THE INNOVATION BARN: A SPACE FOR ENTREPRENEURS

One Entrepreneur’s business was built to engage the entrepreneurial community in Bismarck-Mandan. Jonathan Hooker, owner of the Innovation Barn, built this space as a hub for innovators, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. “We started with this idea of a training room where we could offer training classes,” says Hooker. “But I need more than the training room to make this something valuable to people. It’s about building a community of people and that’s where the mentality for a full co-working space came out of.” Here entrepreneurs can utilize the space for meetings or as office space and engage with other entrepreneurs.

The Innovation Barn is a space where entrepreneurs can hold a meeting or use as office space.

A REGION READY TO SUPPORT NEW BUSINESSES

Statewide organizations like the North Dakota Small Business Development Center, North Dakota Women’s Business Center, Gener8tor, and SCORE play a pivotal role in enabling businesses to thrive. Their personalized advising supports entrepreneurs at every stage, making North Dakota an excellent landscape for innovation and growth.

The North Dakota Women’s Business Center provides women in rural small businesses with essential programs, training, events and funding opportunities.

Gener8tor North Dakota is a 12-week program that provides coaching, capital, and connections to five startups in each cohort. The program accepts all startups across all industries and business models. Each cohort startup receives $100k investment.

With Nearly 100 experienced business mentors in North Dakota, score helps small business launch grow and thrive. Partnering with entrepreneurs one-on-one, SCORE mentors support business success by providing experienced advice, consulting on best practices, and educating on small business topics.

By utilizing professional business advisors, the North Dakota Small Business Development Center powers the creation, growth, and Success of small businesses through business advising, training, resources, succession planning, and assisting in obtaining capital resources.

STRENGTHENING THE ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM

Engaging with entrepreneurs enriches the entire community. Local events like One Million Cups and Chamber EDC mixers create opportunities for meaningful connections and valuable insights. Evan Anderson noted, “We’ve never left an event without learning something new or forming a valuable relationship.”

Supporting entrepreneurs also helps businesses attract and retain talent. Employees value opportunities to contribute to a greater cause, helping them gain purpose and job satisfaction. “Engagement with the entrepreneurial community gives employees a sense of belonging and makes a real difference,” Evan added.

Local businesses are more than just profit-driven—they help shape the community’s identity. Local treasures such as Copper Dog, Signature Events, Papa’s Pumpkin Patch, and Brick Oven Bakery add value to the lives of community members by creating welcoming spaces and meaningful experiences.

HOW EMERGING BUSINESSES IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY

Each new business started in our community opens the door to new opportunities for people and businesses. Entrepreneurs create jobs, providing job options for people of different skill sets and levels.

A trait of successful entrepreneurs is that they can quickly adapt to changing community needs. Small businesses are uniquely positioned to respond more efficiently to shifts in local demand, offering unique solutions that are more tailored for their community that larger organizations often overlook. This quick ability to pivot not only meets immediate needs but also supports the bond between businesses and their communities, creating a growth multiplier for our economy.

As these businesses start to take off, they diversify the local economy, reducing reliance on single industries and increasing overall stability. “If we can build an ecosystem where small business owners support each other and we keep business as local as possible,” says Hooker, “We can keep that money right here in our community.” This cycle of growth allows Bismarck-Mandan to become a resilient, self-sustaining community.

Many entrepreneurs also reinvest in their communities through philanthropy. Whether by donating a portion of their profits, offering their products or services to nonprofits, or volunteering their time and expertise, they give back in ways that directly benefit the people and causes around them. This personal commitment to the community goes beyond corporate social responsibility programs, as small businesses tend to have a deeper, more direct connection to the areas where they operate. Local entrepreneurs typically feel a stronger obligation to invest in their neighbors, supporting the well-being of the community.

This special connection not only improves the community but also builds a supportive and engaged businesses environment where new ideas can grow into successful operations. In turn, local entrepreneurs contribute more than just business success—they create a foundation for lasting growth.

Entrepreneurship is a powerful force, reshaping economies, strengthening communities, and quickly responding to community needs. Through the tools available in BismarckMandan, entrepreneurs are creating a more vibrant and resilient community for all. Together we are Moving Business Forward.

EPIC is one of the top energy industry events and trade shows in the region. This year’s conference brought together more than 1,000 people and featured 200 exhibit booths, giving plenty of chances to connect with leaders in the energy field.

The team shared the many benefits Bismarck-Mandan offers to energy companies. By talking about our area’s strong infrastructure, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment, the team showed why our community is a great place for energy companies to grow or relocate. These efforts not only bring in new businesses but also create chances for local companies to work together, expand, and benefit from a stronger local economy.

Attending EPIC is just one way we are working to improve the business environment in Bismarck-Mandan. By attending events like this, the Economic Development team is helping bring new opportunities, build connections in industry, and ensure a bright future for our local business community.

LEADERSHIP BISMARCK-MANDAN

Healthcare Day

For the first time, Healthcare Day was held at the Bismarck State College Health Sciences facility. The centerpiece of Healthcare Day was a panel of hospital system presidents: Rachel Lawlor, Essentia Health; Dr. Todd Schaffer, Sanford Health; and Reed Reyman, CHI St. Alexius Health. Each discussed their No. 1 challenges in delivering healthcare to our region.

Workforce development is the most pressing issue for Essentia Health. Lawlor said this includes physician attraction and retention in our community. For CHI St. Alexius, the top challenge is navigating a highly-regulated environment. Reyman said things will change with new administrations this year at both the federal and state level. Reyman also said healthcare costs go up each year, but reimbursements don’t necessarily keep pace. For Sanford, the biggest challenge is maintaining access to care. Dr. Schaffer said they start each day with a briefing on how many hospital beds are available. On the day Dr. Schaffer spoke to the class, he said Sanford had started the day 31 beds behind.

Law & Legislature Day

Leadership Bismarck-Mandan recently visited the Capitol for Law & Legislature Day, where they participated in the ongoing Legislative Session. The full-day event included a guided tour of the House and Senate Chambers, allowing class members to sit alongside the State’s Representatives and Senators during the January 15th floor sessions.

In the morning, participants attended committee hearings of their choice to observe the testimony process firsthand. Throughout the day, the group heard from several key speakers relevant to the issue day. The General Counsel from the North Dakota Governor’s Office explained how laws are created, interpreted, and enforced, while Justice Douglas Bahr of the North Dakota Supreme Court provided insights into state-level litigation and court hearings.

The day concluded with a visit to the North Dakota State Crime Lab, providing participants with valuable insights into how the state handles criminal investigations and evidence analysis.

How can I extend the life of my concrete driveway and sidewalks?

Northwest Contracting is fortunate to have poured a LOT of concrete in the Bismarck-Mandan area, between commercial and residential projects. A common question asked is, what can I do to make my concrete not crack or delaminate? There is not a one size fits all to answer this question. Concrete does crack, but here are a few things you can do to help extend the life of your concrete. First, in the winter, keep your concrete clear of snow and ice by shoveling or sweeping. The cycle of snow melting and re-freezing can be harmful to concrete pavements. Second, you can caulk your concrete cracks and joints and apply a topical sealer sold at a local construction supply store. These steps help prevent water intrusion into your concrete which helps mitigate future problems. Lastly, don’t use salts on your concrete pavements if possible. The chemical compounds within de-icing salts can react with the components that make up concrete and they form an expanding product that can cause your concrete to pop or fail. If you’re trying to provide traction, sand is a great substitute.

Can I Shop Online Privately?

You know exactly what to get for the special people in your life this holiday season, but how can you keep it secret from them? Holiday shopping can be a bit tricky if you must use a shared device, for example, at a library or a hotel. It’s much preferred to shop from your smartphone or personal tablet/laptop!

A small adjustment to keeping your personal shopping secure is to make sure your browsing history isn’t shared between devices. Perhaps you are logged into your Google account or Apple ID on multiple devices, so the accounts sync automatically. This would also include favorites or bookmarked sites and saved passwords.

Next step: incognito, or private, browsing. Google Chrome has an option to open sites in an incognito window, which basically means that it doesn’t save browsing history, cookies, and site data to your device. The browsing history isn’t documented in the browser, whether you signed into your account or not. Microsoft Edge has an option to open sites in an InPrivate window, which does the same thing as the Google option. Happy shopping!

How can I make sure that my business or family wealth is prepared for the future?

As a wealth advisor, family and business succession planning is a crucial component of navigating the Great Wealth Transfer, an unprecedented transfer of wealth from one generation to the next. With Baby Boomers holding a significant portion of wealth along with small and family-owned businesses, it’s essential to develop a clear strategy for passing the wealth or business down to the next generation. This process involves not only identifying potential heirs, but also ensuring that the business or family trust remains financially stable during the transition.

A successful succession plan includes creating a clear path for the transition, establishing clear governance structures, and addressing potential tax implications. At Bravera Wealth we can help facilitate open discussions about the future of the business or trust. By strategically planning, we can help families and business owners preserve their legacy, maintain operational continuity, address the wishes of the family and ensure the wealth thrives for years to come.

How do I measure success in my marketing efforts?

Measuring success in marketing starts with clear goals, tracking your progress, and making adjustments as you go. Set clear goals. You have to know exactly what you want to achieve— whether it’s more sales, more leads, or more website traffic. Having a clear target helps you stay focused.

Track performance. Use tools like Google Analytics, social media insights, or a CRM to see how your efforts are connecting with people. Watching these metrics over time helps you spot trends and opportunities.

Optimize as you go. Marketing is not something you set-and-forget. Keep an eye on what’s working, then adjust. That might mean tweaking ad copy, changing your audience, or shifting your budget to the platforms driving the best results.

The ultimate goal? Ensure your marketing efforts drive real results, whether that’s new customers, better engagement, or brand growth.

What’s your professional journey, and how did it lead you to DJS Outdoor Services?

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, even as a kid, finding creative ways to make a little extra money. That drive stayed with me throughout my life, and during the winter of 2022-’23, while finishing my final year at the University of Mary, I saw an opportunity that would shape my future. Bismarck-Mandan experienced one of the highest recorded snowfalls in history, and I saw an immediate demand for snow removal services. I started acquiring contracts and the necessary equipment, and before I knew it, I was running my own small business.

As graduation approached, I knew I wanted to expand into the outdoor services industry, combining my passion for landscaping with the seasonal nature of snow removal. That’s when I had the opportunity to acquire a family-owned lawn care business, which became the foundation for DJS Outdoor Services. Since then, I’ve been gradually scaling the business, growing our offerings and focusing on quality service for both landscaping in the summer and reliable snow removal in the winter.

DJS OUTDOOR SERVICES MEMBER SINCE 2023

Can you share a pivotal moment, decision, or challenge that shaped the history of DJS Outdoor Services?

One of the most pivotal moments for DJS Outdoor Services came in 2023 after acquiring the lawn care business. It was a defining point—an exciting yet challenging transition. I was faced with the task of turning my vision, scaling the business into a full-service landscaping company, into a reality. The shift required strategic planning, adapting to new industry demands, all while putting together a team to make it happen.

How has DJS Outdoor Services adapted to the changing landscape of Bismarck-Mandan over the years?

Over the past couple years, the industry has seen an increase in consumer demand, and technology. We want to be able to provide quality work and a great overall experience to our customers by finding new ways to offer better and more efficient service. The last two winters have been particularly challenging for our snow removal services, with minimal snowfall impacting the business. But rather than seeing it as a setback, we saw it as an opportunity to innovate and diversify. We adapted by shifting focus to our processes and how we operate to better meet our clients needs for when the work is there.

DJS Outdoor Service has been a member since 2023.

What’s the most exciting innovation or trend you’re currently seeing in your industry?

The demand for functional outdoor living spaces is growing rapidly in the Midwest. Homeowners are increasingly seeking out features to amplify outdoor living such as large patio gathering areas, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and outdoor pools. In particular, paver patios have become a specialty of mine and one of our most requested projects. They’re a fantastic way to enhance any backyard, offering both beauty and functionality.

Looking ahead, what’s your vision for DJS Outdoor Services’ future?

I see DJS Outdoor Services becoming a valuable service provider in the community to keep up with the growing demand.

OUR INSURANCE TEAM IS

What’s one thing about DJS Outdoor Services that might surprise people?

One thing that may surprise people is that everything we’ve accomplished so far started from scratch. For years, I knew I wanted to own and operate my own business, but I didn’t have all the pieces in place at the start. With every learning experience, we have been able to refine processes and continue to better serve our clients.

How is technology changing the way you do business, and what innovations are you most excited about?

Technology has had a significant impact on how we operate. With limited time to oversee everything myself, outsourcing office tasks has been a game-changer for day-to-day operations. By researching and implementing different CRM software, exploring new advertising avenues, and outsourcing administrative work, we’ve been able to streamline our operations and create a more efficient workflow.

At Starion Insurance, we make acquiring the coverage you need easy and affordable, freeing your mind to focus on what matters most, your business

Our local agents are here for you.

BISMARCK PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES TWO-TIER BUS SYSTEM

The Bismarck School Board voted to adopt a two-tier bus system at their January 13 meeting. Last month, the School Board received a recommendation from the Bismarck Public Schools Operational Excellence Committee and school leaders to adopt a two-tier bus system. A two-tiered system, which staggers school start times for different groups of students, works to maximize efficiency by enabling buses to run multiple routes. The two-tier system will go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year.

The move to a two-tier system is a response to ongoing transportation challenges faced by the district in recent years, including bus driver shortages, budget constraints, lengthy bus routes, and delayed student pickup. To explore potential solutions, the district first hired Transpar, a consulting firm specializing in school transportation, to evaluate its bussing operations. Transpar’s detailed report identified a two-tier system as a possible solution for these issues.

Under the two-tier model, elementary students will be picked up and dropped off first, followed by secondary students. This adjustment necessitates some changes to school start and end times but will improve efficiency and reliability by reducing the number of buses and drivers needed. Some expected benefits are that students may be on the bus for a shorter amount of time, and the district anticipates significant savings on transportation that will allow funds to be allocated to other areas of need. A two-tier system may also improve safety by allowing the separation of elementary and secondary students, who will now ride buses at different times. Based on current estimates, the expected start times will be 7:50 AM for elementary, and between 8:30 – 8:40 AM for secondary. The district is routing families and will finalize start times in the near future to ensure all stakeholders remain informed throughout the process.

In recognition of the potential impact on families and the community, BPS initiated an extensive feedback collection process starting last fall. The district hosted three community forums at Simle, Wachter, and Horizon Middle Schools, drawing over 160 participants. Additional input sessions were held during PTO meetings at several schools. In order to ensure all stakeholders were informed and able to provide feedback, videos were shared with all district staff and parents, accompanied by an online feedback form.

Community feedback indicated a strong interest in ensuring childcare providers and after-school programs are able to accommodate the schedule change. In order to address this concern, BPS is working with community partners, such as BLAST and CREA, to make certain the needs of families are met by making any needed changes and expanding services as necessary.

Once the routing process is completed, the district will share additional information with the community. BPS will continue to share regular updates while working to transition to the new bus system for the 2025-2026 school year.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY’S GARY THARALDSON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS EARNS

PRESTIGIOUS ACCREDITATION

The University of Mary’s Gary Tharaldson School of Business (GTSB) has been granted reaccreditation of its specialized business programs by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE), underscoring its commitment to academic excellence and integrity. The announcement was made following the IACBE Board of Commissioners’ December 3, 2024, meeting, with accreditation effective from January 2025 through December 31, 2031.

This distinction applies to all undergraduate and master’s programs within the Gary Tharaldson School of Business. The recently launched Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program, already recognized by the Cardinal Newman Society, will be reviewed for accreditation through IACBE after the first cohort graduates this spring.

The IACBE accreditation process involves a rigorous evaluation of the university’s adherence to nine principles, including quality assessment, innovation in business education, ethical behavior, and strategic planning. This achievement reflects the GTSB’s ongoing commitment to providing students with highquality education that combines academic rigor with practical application.

Dr. Karel Sovak, dean of the Gary Tharaldson School of Business, praised the accreditation as a testament to the faculty’s dedication and the university’s mission.

“This is a credit to the quality of our faculty and their adherence to the mission of the University of Mary,” said Sovak. “We are recognized for our commitment to integrity, responsibility, and ethical behavior, and we model that for our students. Additionally, the experiential learning we provide to our students, as well as the numerous networking opportunities they experience, all add up to the ability to be quite successful before they even graduate from the Gary Tharaldson School of Business.”

Sovak emphasized that accreditation results from a collaborative effort among faculty, who strive to ensure student success. “We measure our success by the success of our students and take pride in how well they thrive in the workforce,” he noted. “Faculty know that will reflect our future growth and work hard to ensure this philosophy continues long into the future. We are grateful for IACBE recognizing all our efforts to produce a quality business education.”

Innovative Undergraduate Experiences

The Gary Tharaldson School of Business stands out for offering students hands-on learning opportunities that prepare them for leadership roles in their fields. Signature programs include:

These initiatives exemplify the school’s focus on experiential learning, ensuring that students graduate with practical knowledge and a competitive edge in the job market.

AGENCY RETAINS TOP FHA LOAN SERVICER RANKING

North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) was ranked a Tier 1 Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan servicer for FY 2024 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) National Servicing Center.

“North Dakota Housing Finance Agency offers affordable financing options, including government-backed loans, that allow individuals and families with modest incomes to purchase a home with as little as $500 down,” said Dave Flohr, the agency’s executive director. “In addition to being cost-effective, our homeownership programs are serviced locally, ensuring our borrowers have direct access to a real person whenever they have questions or need assistance.”

Loan guarantees provided by HUD reimburse lenders for their loss in the event that a homeowner defaults. Of the nearly 13,500 loans NDHFA currently services, 42 percent are FHA guaranteed.

Loan servicers receive quarterly scores that are averaged to produce a final fiscal year-end score. NDHFA’s FY2024 score is 94.15 percent, up from 93.53 the previous year. The agency was one of 87 loan servicers ranked as Tier 1 for FY2024. There were 495 FHA servicers nationwide.

The ranking system measures FHA servicer compliance with guidelines and intervention requirements, loss mitigation engagement, and reporting. The intention of the ranking is to protect borrowers and alert HUD to potential problems. A high work-out ratio shows a servicer’s effectiveness in working with delinquent borrowers to keep them out of foreclosure. The National Servicing Center has ranked NDHFA a Tier 1 servicer for seven years running.

A self-supporting and mission-driven agency, NDHFA is dedicated to making housing affordable for all North Dakotans. The North Dakota Industrial Commission, consisting of Governor Kelly Armstrong as chairman, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and Attorney General Drew Wrigley, oversees the agency. More information about NDHFA is available online at www.ndhfa.org.

MATCHING FUNDS AVAILABLE THROUGH ND CAREER BUILDERS PROGRAM

The ND Career Builders Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program has matching funds available for area businesses to recruit employees in high-need and emerging occupations. About $125,000 statewide is available to be used for scholarships and student loan repayments for eligible recipients.

The funds were originally made available in July when participants at the North Dakota Governor’s Cup raised $125,000 for the ND Career Builders program to promote workforce development by assisting businesses with the matching funds requirement. Through the program, innovative partnerships between businesses and North Dakota provide $1 of state funds for $1 of matching funds for up to a total of $17,000 per recipient.

To receive a scholarship, applicants must enroll in an eligible program of study within North Dakota and then live within the state for 3 years after program completion, working in an indemand occupation. For loan repayment, recipients must live within North Dakota and work in an in-demand occupation within the state. Loan repayment is paid out over a 3-year period.

Some of the more than 100 in-demand occupations include nursing, teaching, computer programming, electrical, welding, mechanical engineering and social work. A full list of in-demand occupations has been compiled on the North Dakota University System (NDUS) website.

Since the program’s inception in 2019, 527 applicants have been served through ND Career Builders. Of the 527 applicants, 408 have completed their post-secondary education and are employed in North Dakota. Over nearly six years, the private sector, with a state match, has committed $6.3 million in scholarships and student loan repayments.

Businesses interested in using the available matching funds should call Brenda Zastoupil, NDUS director of financial aid, at 701-328-2906 or email brenda.zastoupil@ndus.edu. More information about the program is available on the NDUS website at ndus.edu/career-builders.

RADIOLOGIST RECEIVES

510(K)

CLEARANCE FOR NOVEL SAFETY FOLEY CATHETER

A catheter created by Bruce Gardner, M.D. radiologist at Sanford Health in Bismarck and produced by InnoCare Urologics, received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its EgressTM Foley catheter under the newly created FDA product classification code recognizing Foley catheters with safety features (SCT). This achievement marks the Company’s first FDA clearance of its platform technology and the first-ever device cleared under this new code.

The EgressTM catheter, patented by Sanford Health, avoids the injuries that occur when traditional indwelling catheters are pulled out while the catheter balloon is still inflated. InnoCare’s proprietary technology enables the EgressTM balloon to automatically deflate before a pull-out occurs, avoiding extensive patient harm. The catheter is readily interchangeable with existing Foley catheters in clinical practice and patient use.

Foley catheters are one of the most widely used medical devices, with over 30 million prescribed in the U.S. each year. InnoCare will be releasing the catheter to select hospitals and is exploring strategic commercial partnership opportunities in parallel.
