Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season and are looking forward to 2025 as much as I am. 2024 brought a lot of changes for me both personally and professionally. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Lee Pierce, and I am very honored to be your Chair of the Chamber EDC for the upcoming year. I work at ICON Architectural Group in Mandan and recently joined the ownership as a Principal. I have lived in Bismarck and Mandan for almost 25 years where I raised my two wonderful boys, Jacob and Samuel, with my husband Aaron.

As we approach 2025, the Chamber EDC is filled with optimism for growth and prosperity in Bismarck, Mandan, Burleigh, and Morton counties. The past year has brought change within our organization, and we are grateful for the support of our members and community partners. Your commitment has been invaluable, and we look forward to building on this foundation in 2025. Preparation for the upcoming legislative session is already underway. I encourage you as our members to educate yourself on the bills being proposed to the House and Senate and to please engage with our team and the Government Affairs Committee to stay informed about the session and to let us know of any/all bills we need to be monitoring.

Along with keeping up with the Legislative Session the Chamber EDC will be developing a new strategic plan to guide us into the future as not only leaders within Bismarck-Mandan, but leaders within North Dakota. The new plan will be essential for the business community to continue to Move Business Forward by providing focused direction, facilitate resource management and foster growth for businesses large and small.

The Chamber EDC has a couple of important events coming up in February that I encourage you to participate in. The State of the Cities Event on February 4 is a great opportunity to hear from our local community leadership to hear about the challenges and successes over the past year and what the economic outlook is for 2025. The other event is Giving Hearts Day on February 13. One of the greatest qualities of Bismarck-Mandan is the generosity of the businesses and people who live, work and play here. Your donations are utilized throughout the community to benefit young and old and to empower those that need your help. There are a multitude of worthy charities to donate to within our area.

I am looking forward to 2025 and engaging with you, our membership, to continue to Move Business Forward.

Supporting Our Nonprofits: Building a Thriving Community Together

As the holiday season winds down, the spirit of giving continues to take center stage. Our growing business community and high quality of life continue to earn Bismarck-Mandan recognition as one of the best places to live and work. While we celebrate the entrepreneurs and individuals who fuel our region’s economic success on many occasions, it’s just as important to honor the contributions of not-for-profit and charity organizations. These groups make sure that no one in our community is left behind.

Bismarck-Mandan is home to hundreds of nonprofits and charities. Each with a unique mission devoted to building a brighter future for every resident. These organizations are the unseen champions of our community. They address critical issues such as food insecurity, education gaps, housing needs, and mental health challenges. From schools nurturing the next generation to food banks ensuring no family goes hungry to rehabilitation centers offering individuals a second chance, nonprofits lay the foundation for a resilient and compassionate community.

Nonprofits are major economic drivers. They provide jobs at all skill levels and in many industries. Many offer employment opportunities to individuals facing barriers in traditional job markets, such as those transitioning from homelessness, veterans reintegrating into civilian life, or people with disabilities. “Nonprofit organizations provide services that are often outside the scope of what businesses can offer, such as housing, healthcare, and communication skills training,” Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz, owner of Point CPA, notes. “These services are especially crucial for new residents who may lack the foundational support needed to secure jobs and integrate into the community and fill those open jobs so that our community can continue to grow,” Schmitz adds. This inclusive approach strengthens the workforce, making it more diverse, skilled, and resilient.

Beyond economic and workforce contributions, nonprofits have an unparalleled ability to adapt to the community’s evolving needs. In times of crisis—whether a natural disaster, public health emergency, or economic downturn—they are often the first to respond, delivering immediate relief and spearheading long-term recovery efforts. Their quick ability to pivot and dedication ensure that Bismarck-Mandan is not just a place to live, but to thrive.

Their impact extends beyond the individuals they serve. Nonprofits shape the social and economic blocks that build our community. By fostering civic engagement, they encourage individuals to connect, collaborate, and contribute to the greater good. For businesses and employees, partnering with nonprofits offers meaningful opportunities to develop leadership skills, strengthen teamwork, and deepen community ties. These collaborations can spark innovative solutions to local challenges, creating a ripple effect of positive change that benefits all.

UPLIFTING NONPROFITS ON GIVING HEARTS DAY

As we examine the invaluable contributions of nonprofits to our community, there’s no better time to show support than during Giving Hearts Day. This unique day of community support will take place on February 13, 2025. Founded in 2008, Giving Hearts Day is a 24-hour fundraising event that empowers charities across North Dakota and northwest Minnesota to fund their missions. This annual event provides a powerful platform for nonprofits to connect with an ever-growing community of donors, many of whom experience the joy of giving for the very first time.

As the longest-running giving day in the country, Giving Hearts Day has raised an incredible $195 million for participating charities since its start. This legacy of generosity underscores the collective power of communities working together to support nonprofits.

One of the standout features of Giving Hearts Day is the ability to search through hundreds of participating charities on GivingHeartsDay.org. This makes it easy for businesses and individuals to find organizations that align with their missions, interests, or passions. Whether your focus is education, health, environmental sustainability, or community development, there’s a charity that resonates with your values. This personalized approach to giving ensures that donors can support causes close to their hearts, creating a deeper connection to the nonprofits they help.

Giving Hearts Day enables equality and inclusion by providing a platform for charities of all sizes and budgets to share their stories and inspire action. This day isn’t just about fundraising; it’s a celebration of community spirit that challenges people of all ages to come together, shine a light on critical issues, and support the nonprofits creating real change in our region.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Giving Hearts Day helps businesses give back to the community and support local nonprofits. One of the best ways to get involved is by becoming a Giving Hearts Day Business. Signing up is simple: visit GivingHeartsDay.org, click on “Join Us,” and complete the GHD 2025 Business Sign-Up form. Once registered, businesses will receive a packet of promotional materials to help spread the word and engage their team. Regular emails will provide tips and resources to help businesses plan to support nonprofits during this event.

“Giving Hearts Day is a unique chance for businesses to come together and make a real difference in our community,” said Deidre Hillman, Bismarck-Mandan Giving Hearts Day event coordinator. “Businesses can get involved in many ways. They can donate, match gifts, volunteer, or organize a drive. They can also show their support by wearing red or decorating their business in the color.” She also notes, “Participating businesses have the chance to win a $1,000 Giving Hearts Day gift card to give to the charity of their choice, increasing the impact of their donation.”

Participating businesses will receive an invite to join the Facebook group, Giving Hearts Day 2025 Businesses. This group fosters collaboration. It offers a space for businesses to ask questions, share stories, and exchange ideas. It’s an invaluable platform for inspiring one another and amplifying the collective impact of Giving Hearts Day. By connecting and learning from each other, businesses can support nonprofits. They can also build community ties and a shared purpose.

Beyond these benefits, the Bismarck Tribune will recognize participating businesses and businesses will receive notifications of upcoming local Giving Hearts Day events.

The Giving Hearts Day website is an easy way to donate to multiple charities at once.

THE ROLE OF NONPROFITS IN OUR COMMUNITY

Giving back to the community isn’t just a moral obligation; it’s also a strategic investment. While businesses focus on their operations, nonprofits address the broader needs of employees and residents. “Some of it’s volunteerism, some of it’s financial resources, but it’s important because nonprofits fill those gaps to make sure our employees and all people that live here have everything they need to thrive in our community,” explains Mayor Mike Schmitz of Bismarck. By supporting nonprofits, businesses can contribute to a stronger, more resilient community—one where everyone benefits from shared prosperity.

Both Mandan Mayor James Froelich and Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz emphasized the critical role of business-nonprofit partnerships in strengthening the community. “These partnerships help address social needs and improve or expand public services,” says Froelich. Schmitz adds, “Without the businesses who reinvest back into our community, we are not able to make sure the individuals in our community have access to important resources such as mental and physical health services.”

Froelich urged local businesses to get involved. He said, “When a business partners with local nonprofits, it shows it cares about the community. Even small gestures, like sponsoring a little league team or donating a gift basket for a silent auction, go a long way in making a difference.”

“We have the vibrancy of a great community. We have the financial resources, the time, and the people. Now all we have to do is keep it up. I encourage everyone to think about it,” Schmitz emphasizes. Matching dollar programs and collaborative initiatives like Giving Hearts Day present a unique opportunity to amplify the impact of every contribution. By working together, businesses and nonprofits can create a multiplier effect that delivers transformative results.

Imagine our community without these organizations. The consequences would be profound: fewer resources for vulnerable populations, diminished support for families in need, and lost opportunities for personal and economic growth. Nonprofits are more than support systems; they are the heart and soul of a connected, compassionate, and prosperous community.

As we embrace this season of giving and Giving Hearts Day, let us celebrate not only the success of our businesses but also the invaluable work of our nonprofits. Through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness, we all have a role to play in ensuring these organizations continue their critical mission. Together, we can build a Bismarck-Mandan where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.

The Economic Development Strategic Plan was developed at the end of 2022. It is a comprehensive guide designed to steer the economic development efforts of the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC.

This nine-strategy plan was crafted by a national consulting firm, drawing on a range of data and insights. The firm analyzed economic indicators, population and demographic trends, tax revenues, land availability, stakeholder input, infrastructure capacity, and previous plans and reports. The result is a focused and actionable roadmap for fostering economic growth in Bismarck-Mandan.

As a five-year plan, it is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. However, the Chamber EDC will periodically evaluate the progress of the strategies, reassess community needs, and determine whether to continue ongoing efforts or pivot to new priorities based on the community’s evolving landscape.

The plan provides a well-researched framework to optimize local resources and support community growth. It highlights the tools and infrastructure already in place while identifying gaps, such as the need for more industrial development space or strategies to grow the local workforce. By creating awareness campaigns and fostering new opportunities, the plan aims to attract businesses and talent to Bismarck-Mandan.

For our members, the plan ensures that their contributions— whether financial or otherwise—are utilized thoughtfully and effectively. It provides a unified and well-considered approach to economic development, ensuring that every dollar supports initiatives that align with the community’s shared goals.

This month, we are highlighting Strategies 1, 6, and 7.

STRATEGY #1: LEAD GENERATION

The team utilized a funnel approach to attract businesses to our community. The economic development team attended the Williston Basin Petroleum Council’s Bakken Now event in partnership with the Bismarck-Mandan Visitors Bureau, where they connected with leaders in the energy industry and companies involved in showcasing the value Bismarck-Mandan offers to energy businesses.

Over the past two years, the team has sent monthly emails and targeted LinkedIn ads to leaders in our target industries: ValueAdded Agriculture, Value-Added Energy, and Manufacturing. They monitored engagement with these emails and sent informational boxes to producers who consistently interacted with the emails to further entice them to learn more about Bismarck-Mandan.

The team also spent the year refining the content on and driving traffic to their economic development website, bismarckmandanedc.com. This site highlights helpful resources for businesses considering expansion into Bismarck-Mandan and attracted 39,348 unique visitors over the year. The website was most viewed in Virginia, Texas, Washington, Minnesota, and Iowa, and the average time spent on the site was one minute and twelve seconds. This not only shows that businesses in the states targeted found the website but also indicates they spent a significant amount of time engaging with the content, demonstrating its relevance and usefulness.

By leveraging these strategies, the Chamber EDC reached 502,695 prospective businesses.

STRATEGY #6: ELEVATE TALENT ATTRACTION

The team has been actively working to enhance its talent attraction strategy. Early this year, the Chamber EDC applied for funding through the Regional Workforce Impact Program provided by the North Dakota Department of Commerce to produce community promotion videos. These videos aim to showcase the diverse individuals and backgrounds that make Bismarck-Mandan their home. The goal is to inspire people from other communities to see the opportunities BismarckMandan offers and consider relocating here.

Thanks to the support of our two cities and local partners, the Chamber EDC successfully secured the funding. Following a competitive RFP process, Threefold was selected to create the videos. Production is expected to be completed by early 2025, and the videos will be marketed nationwide to share the story of life in Bismarck-Mandan.

In mid-2023, the Chamber EDC launched MakeYourMarkBisMan.com, a dynamic website designed to support employers and individuals exploring a move to Bismarck-Mandan. The site serves as a comprehensive resource, offering detailed information about healthcare providers, real estate opportunities, dining options, entertainment venues, and other key aspects of community life. By providing these resources, the website aims to make the transition for newcomers as seamless as possible.

Over the past year, traffic to the site has surged, driven by ongoing efforts to update and refine its content. These improvements ensure the site remains relevant and valuable, addressing the needs of potential new residents and showcasing the best of what Bismarck-Mandan has to offer.

The site has experienced 6,728 page views since the beginning of the year, with top traffic originating from California, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington, and Ohio. These states boast large talent pools, suggesting the site is effectively reaching individuals who may be considering relocation to Bismarck-Mandan. This highlights that our targeted outreach is resonating with the right audiences.

STRATEGY #7: HELP EXISTING BUSINESSES

The team and its Economic Development Committee redeveloped the scoring matrix and policies to streamline the distribution of the Bismarck Vision Fund’s PACE and Flex PACE programs, ensuring that the programs reach those who need them most.

The Chamber EDC has also added Noah Vroman as Business Development Coordinator to the team to help offer added assistance to our existing businesses. He will execute business retention and expansion efforts by working with our businesses to help connect them to the resources they need to help their business grow, adapt, or pivot.

The Chamber EDC will also be conducting a business survey in the new year to collect feedback from members and community partners about how we can better serve our business community. To learn more about the Chamber EDC’s Economic Development efforts, visit bismarckmandanedc.com.

TAXABLE SALES AND PURCHASES

In mid-November, the North Dakota Office of Tax Commissioner released the Q3 2024 Taxable Sales and Purchases report. Both Bismarck and Mandan have seen steady growth in taxable sales and purchases over the past four years.

In Bismarck, taxable sales and purchases increased by 12.93%, rising from $418,294,509 in Q3 2021 to $472,395,970 in Q3 2024. Mandan experienced significant growth, with a 51.7% increase, climbing from $74,594,125 in Q3 2021 to $113,158,512 in Q3 2024.

Burleigh County also saw growth, with a 13.08% increase compared to Q3 2021. When comparing Q3 2024 to Q3 2023, Burleigh County experienced a more modest growth of 0.7%. Meanwhile, Morton County showed a 49% increase compared to Q3 2017 and a notable 20.3% rise from Q3 2023 to Q3 2024. The 69th assembly of the North Dakota State Legislative session kicks off on Tuesday, January 7th, at the State Capitol. While many of the committees have already been meeting, the difficult work of enacting meaningful legislation to ensure the state of North Dakota is a well run state takes place for up to 80 days beginning on January 7th.

You are encouraged to track the activities and calendars of our legislators at https://ndlegis.gov. The Chamber EDC Government Affairs Committee, co-chaired by Marnie Walth, Sanford Health, and Jean Schafer, Basin Electric Power Cooperative has been meeting throughout 2024 to gain information from our membership regarding what is important to help move business forward.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on bills that impact workforce, education and daycare, economic development, infrastructure funding such as policy strategy to alleviate property tax burden for residents/businesses, energy innovation, healthcare and military affairs. Brenda Nagel will be spending time at the capitol interacting with legislators and providing testimony where needed in ways that will support the efforts of the membership of the Chamber EDC and their businesses.

The Chamber EDC would like to proactively thank our legislators for what will likely be a very busy legislative session. We look forward to working together to do what is the best for Bismarck and Mandan and the state of North Dakota.

I want to take better care of myself in the new year. What are some standard cancer screenings I should know about?

Taking care of your health is a great New Year’s goal! Here are key cancer screenings to consider:

• Breast Cancer: Mammograms start at 40 (optional) or annually from 45–54, then every two years at 55+.

• Cervical Cancer: Testing begins at 21 with pap smears and HPV testing.

• Colorectal Cancer: Screenings start at 45 with options like colonoscopies every 10 years or annual stool tests.

• Prostate Cancer: Men 50+ should discuss PSA testing; higher-risk men should start earlier.

• Lung Cancer: Annual low-dose CT scans for ages 50–80 with heavy smoking history.

• Skin Cancer: Regular self-exams; high-risk individuals should see a dermatologist annually.

Talk to your doctor to tailor screenings to your risk factors—early detection saves lives!

MEMBERProfile PRAIRIE WEST GOLF COURSE

What’s your professional journey, and how did it lead you to Prairie West Golf Course?

My name is Garrett Schultz, and I am the Golf Operations Manager for the Mandan Park District. The Mandan Park District operates two golf courses, Prairie West and Mandan Municipal. I was born and raised in New Salem, ND where I began working at the local golf course when I was 12. From there, I was hooked on the idea of making a career in golf. I attended North Dakota State University where I earned a degree in Sports & Urban Turfgrass Management. After graduation, I served as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Hawktree Golf Club in Bismarck for one season. In 2012, I was hired as Golf Superintendent for the Mandan Park District. As my tenure progressed, I transitioned into the role of Golf Operations Manager as well as maintaining my duties as lead golf course superintendent.

MEMBER SINCE 1995

Can you share a pivotal moment, decision, or challenge that shaped the history of Prairie West Golf Course?

There have been several pivotal moments in the history of Prairie West Golf Course, instances where the Mandan Park Board of Commissioners & Executive Director made strategic investments in our golf courses that proved to be highly impactful. Installation of a new irrigation system and improvements to practice facilities come to mind at the top of that list. Investing dollars in strategic areas has paid dividends with customer satisfaction, and thus the health of our operation. There has been a long-time commitment of investing in facilities while keeping consumer costs affordable. As with all industries, the golf business was challenged during the Covid-19 Pandemic — ultimately, those circumstances created a boost for outdoor recreation, and the golf industry has benefited from the new players that have taken up the game since then. This influx of customers has allowed our operation to thrive and improve the quality of our golf courses.

Prairie West Golf Course has been a member since 1995.

How has Prairie West Golf Course adapted to the changing landscape of Bismarck-Mandan over the years?

The demographics of golf and our consumer base have shifted over the years. Prairie West has been at the forefront of adapting and improving our facilities to accommodate golfers of all ages and abilities. We have installed new tee boxes for beginners as well as accomplished players. Partnerships with the Dakota Junior Golf Association and US Kids golf have allowed us to expand our practice facilities and accommodate a new generation of youth golfers. We have seen growth year over year at our monthly Prairie West Ladies Day, as well as our competitive Prairie West Open golf tournament.

Mandan Municipal Golf Course is celebrating is 100th Anniversary in 2025—proof that golf has stood the test of time and adapted to historical and economic trends!

What’s the most exciting innovation or trend you’re currently seeing in your industry?

In my opinion, the most exciting trend in the golf industry is the overall growth in the right direction. Historically golf has seen other booms—this time around there is a focus on serving all demographics of players. The investment in youth golf locally is setting up our facilities for long term success through player recruitment and development.

Looking ahead, what’s your vision for Prairie West Golf Course’s future?

Our vision for Prairie West Golf course matches that of the Mandan Park District in its entirety—to provide a recreational opportunity for all ages and abilities while improving the quality of life for our citizens and visitors. We strive to provide a golf course that offers something for everyone—where beginning players up to the most accomplished golfer can have an experience that meets their needs and keeps them coming back! We are a public golf course, so we work tirelessly to ensure that everyone feels comfortable at Prairie West and can find their place in the game of golf that can serve them a lifetime of outdoor recreation and camaraderie.

How does Prairie West Golf Course contribute to the local community beyond its products/services?

Prairie West and Mandan Municipal Golf Courses are proud to support our community in a variety of ways. We are known for hosting charitable golf events that fundraise for local organizations while providing a great day on the golf course. We provide access for many school and college golf teams to practice and play. Annually, Prairie West hosts the Mandan Park District Foundation “Scramble for Scholarships” which raises money to support area youth and provides opportunities for participation in a variety of recreational activities.

What’s one thing about Prairie West Golf Course that might surprise people?

Prairie West Golf Course makes an effort to maximize our short North Dakota golf season each year, doing what we can to open early in the spring and stay open into November. In 2024, we hosted over 35,000 golfers and had over 1.4 million range balls hit!

How is technology changing the way you do business, and what innovations are you most excited about?

On the Golf Operations side, an investment in online tee time software and the ability to sell season passes from our website (www.golfmandan.com) has streamlined our operations and improved our customer experience. For golf course maintenance, Prairie West stays on the cutting edge of technology and environmental stewardship. A state-ofthe-art irrigation system allows us to accurately deliver water only where & when it’s needed. The maintenance team utilizes daily data collection of soil moisture, turf growth, and playing conditions. This data is input into custom site-specific algorithms and cross referenced with predictive AI modeling to craft a daily maintenance plan that provides expected course conditions while conserving resources.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY TO OPEN ONE-OF-A-KIND EARLY CHILDHOOD FACILITY IN CENTRAL BISMARCK

Navigating a shortage of licensed childcare facilities is a current reality for families, not only in North Dakota but across the United States — leaving parents scrambling for solutions, disrupting family planning, and causing economic strain on communities. To help address this critical issue locally, the University of Mary is stepping in with a new and innovative solution for the Bismarck-Mandan area.

Thanks to a nearly half-million-dollar grant from the North Dakota Department of Commerce, the University of Mary is transforming the Butler Center on South 7th Street into the Center for Early Learning (CEL). The $464,000 grant will fund renovations to the building, which will open its doors as a licensed childcare center and preschool on June 1, 2025. CEL will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, providing working parents with much-needed early care and education options.

The Liffrig Family School of Education and Behavioral Sciences and the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences are partnering in this endeavor, making the University of Mary’s new Center for Early Learning a cutting-edge institution in early childhood education. The center will accommodate approximately 70 to 80 children, from infants as young as eight weeks to children aged 12. The program will offer a high-quality, Montessoriinspired curriculum, rooted in Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine values, nurturing the mind, body, and soul of every child.

“The need for high-quality early childhood environments has never been more urgent,” said Jennifer Barry, director of the University of Mary Center for Early Learning. “We’re providing a service that’s desperately needed, not just in BismarckMandan but across the United States. Our approach is unique because we are offering a truly holistic approach to early childhood care and education by integrating the resources of our Liffrig Family School of Education and Behavioral Sciences and the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences.”

In addition to early childhood education, the Center for Early Learning will offer on-site screening, referral and interventions through partnerships with the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences, including the physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and nursing programs. This comprehensive approach will ensure children receive personalized care, addressing their unique developmental needs.

The renovation of the Butler Center represents a significant investment in the community’s future. Located across from Kirkwood Mall, the building will feature specialized spaces for infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten-aged children. There will be three classrooms dedicated to preschool (for ages 3 to 6), one infant room, and one toddler room and a fenced-in playground. The children in the program will be supported by a combination of licensed early childhood teachers, qualified caregivers, and students and faculty from the University of Mary.

The concept for a university-affiliated early learning center had been discussed for many years and reemerged as a priority last year. Now, with support from the Regional Workforce Impact Program and the collaborative efforts of the university’s academic schools, the Center for Early Learning is becoming a reality.

As the opening day approaches, excitement continues to grow, with families already signing up for enrollment. The University of Mary’s commitment to serving the community, as outlined by its founders — the Benedictine Sister of Annunciation Monastery — is evident in this ambitious and much-needed project.

For more information about the University of Mary Center for Early Learning, including enrollment details and program offerings, visit umary.edu/EarlyLearning or contact Jennifer Barry at (701) 355-8017 or UMCEL@umary.edu.

BASIN ELECTRIC ENERGIZES NEW TRANSMISSION LINE IN WESTERN NORTH DAKOTA

Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric) energized a new transmission line in western North Dakota on Dec. 17.

The Roundup-to-Kummer Ridge transmission line includes 33 miles of new 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line connecting the existing Roundup substation near Killdeer, North Dakota, and the existing Kummer Ridge substation near Johnson’s Corner.

The project was driven by increased load in the region and aims to enhance reliability and reduce the risk of load loss due to a transmission line failure, said Philip Westby, manager of Transmission Services at Basin Electric. The new line uses an aluminum-encapsulated carbon core conductor, which is lighter and more efficient. The project also addresses congestion and cost levelization in the power grid, benefiting local businesses and residents. Westby said Basin Electric is extremely excited about the new transmission line, and so are cooperative members.

“We appreciate Basin Electric’s commitment to the reliability of our region to include this much-needed Roundup-to-Kummer Ridge transmission line,” said Jeremy Mahowald, general manager of Upper Missouri Power Cooperative. “The strength this line adds to McKenzie County and the surrounding region will increase existing member reliability and voltage strength and will help accommodate future load growth.”

The new line underscores what Basin Electric is doing to keep power both reliable and affordable by utilizing generation, technology, and transmission to reduce congestion for its membership. Other examples include building its Pioneer Generation Station in Williston, North Dakota, and harnessing technologies such as Dynamic Line Rating at the Williston-toCharlie Creek 230-kV line.

The transmission project, which started construction in April 2024, was energized five months ahead of its initial target date. Even though the line has been energized, reclamation work around the project is scheduled to continue into 2025.
