Greetings Bismarck-Mandan friends!

August has arrived and parents, students and teachers are starting to think about going back to school. Whether you are sending a child off to kindergarten, preparing your son or daughter for their senior year of high school or packing up items to send a son or daughter off to college, August is a month of transition for many families in Bismarck and Mandan. Along with this preparation comes school shopping – please remember to support our local businesses and we hope you keep our teachers in mind if you are so inclined to pick up extra supplies to share for the classrooms.

Did you get a chance to try some Lemonade? In late July, the Chamber EDC staff and sponsors of Lemonade Day boarded a bus and made their way around Bismarck-Mandan to sample lemonade from several young entrepreneurs who completed a business plan with intentions to make some spending money and try their hand at running a small business. This is where that spirit of owning a business starts and we are always excited to see what the young citizens of Bismarck-Mandan are capable of doing. The Chamber EDC staff is now gearing up for late summer/early fall events such as the Chamber EDC Clay Shoot, kick off for Leadership Bismarck-Mandan, and Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan. Each of these are great ways to leverage your Chamber EDC membership and a way to stay engaged by networking with other members. We look forward to seeing you out and about as we continue to enjoy these excellent summer months in North Dakota.

Allow me to be among the first to formally congratulate the 20 Under 40 that are highlighted in the Connection this month! There were nearly 100 nominations of some well deserving people in the community of Bismarck and Mandan that are the foundation of our community for the future. I encourage you to read about each of the 20 recipients of this years 20 Under 40 and prepare to celebrate this group at Celebrate Bismarck Mandan on September 26.

Finally, I encourage you to continue to keep informed about the property tax measure that will be on the November ballot. As we’ve mentioned previously, our Board of Directors voted to join the Keep it Local Coalition and Brenda has been actively participating in planning and executing educational events for our membership. The simple goal of this effort is to inform members about the value of property tax to the vibrancy of our communities of Bismarck and Mandan, Burleigh and Morton County. Watch for opportunities to join listening sessions to learn more via our social media and weekly electronic emails. Your Chamber EDC team is here to help educate you on these important matters for our community. You can also follow Keep it Local on their website, www.keepitlocalnd.org and social media to stay informed.

MEDICA HEALTH PLANS

JOHN BOLLINGER | 35

Owner & CEO Bismarck Larks & Funatix Events

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

My wife and I moved to Bismarck, ND in Fall 2016 with nothing more than brand new wedding rings, some friends we convinced to work with us, and a crazy dream that we could start a baseball team in a town we’d never lived in. The even crazier thing we did was decide early on we weren’t going to run it like a baseball team, but rather attempt to create the best possible family experience in town.

Because of that idea and the incredible loyalty and support of our fans and partners, in eight seasons that crazy dream has provided playing opportunities for over 400 college athletes (two of which have gone on to play in MLB), sold out Dakota Community Bank and Trust Field over 200 times, celebrated countless community heroes, events and initiatives, and provided a place for over 450,000 people - and counting - to create summer memories and spend quality time with those they love at a ballgame.

Furthermore, it’s opened more doors to start an event company (Funatix Events) which works with our communities’ biggest events including the Mandan Rodeo, Bismarck Marathon, and Dacotah Speedway in addition to private events and festivals. In 2023 and 2024 respectively, we also helped launch another baseball team and a softball team in Minot to bring a similar family experience to another North Dakota community.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My strongest motivation each day is to live life to the fullest and strive to be the best father, husband, friend, and leader I can be. It’s a fun daily balance of desiring continuous improvement with always being grateful for the life I have been given. I believe strongly that we all need a core mission in life, and I feel incredibly fortunate I found mine early on which is use FUN to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I absolutely love making people happy.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

I think thus far the biggest and most exciting challenge has been how to balance growth and new opportunities with maintaining a sharp focus on our mission-driven culture.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

I strongly believe that to live a happy, fulfilled life work should be a vocation. When work is tied directly to a passion it can be so fun and fulfilling! Whenever I hear a young person talk about work as a means to an end rather than a passion, I fear they will never achieve their desired expectations or experience the happiness those feel that truly love what they do. My advice to young people is take the time understand what you are passionate about and why and then work extremely hard to find a job and an organization that fulfills those passions.

KAYLEY CARTMILL | 34

Administrator

Good Samaritan Society - Miller Pointe

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I have been a licensed nursing home administrator for 12 years. I have been at Miller Pointe (previously Sanford off Collins) for nine years. Because I spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up, I have always had a love for the elderly which sparked my interest in nursing home administration at a young age. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time at the lake, working out, and spending time with family and friends.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

At the end of day, knowing that I have made a positive impact in the lives of the residents at Miller Pointe. Due to the nature of my position, I don’t always get as much direct contact with the residents as I would like but I always keep the residents at the forefront with any decision that I make. Being able to work alongside my team to change a process that will ultimately impact our residents and staff in a positive way is what I love most about my job.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

The Covid-19 pandemic was one of the biggest challenges I have faced in my career. Having to watch families visit their loved ones through the window was one of the hardest things to see during the pandemic. Continuing to provide quality care throughout the pandemic when challenged with staffing issues makes me very thankful for each and every one of the staff members at Miller Pointe.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Pursue excellence in all you do but know that as a young professional, you are going to make mistakes; own up to those mistakes and learn from them. Professional and personal growth comes with a learning curve.

ANDY CRAMER | 39

North Central Region President Knife River Corporation

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born in Eastern Montana and moved to Idaho when I was 12. In Idaho, our neighbor was an asphalt paving contractor and I started working for him at 14. I moved from a laborer to a foreman to a superintendent and learned more about the business. I have a master’s degree in the school of hard knocks.

I started with Knife River in 2008. My family roots have always been in North Dakota, and I moved here in 2011 to help launch our Williston operations. In 2015, I became president of our North Dakota operations and in 2023 I became president of the North Central Region, which includes ND, SD, MN and IA.

I am an avid outdoors man and love spending time with my wife, two boys and my daughter.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Knowing that I ultimately have 1,600 team members that I am responsible for and making sure they have what they need to support their families. I am very driven and thrive in a strenuous work environment.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

The construction industry is known for having long hours, and my job also requires a lot of travel. But we have a great team that is like a second family.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

You don’t have to necessarily be the smartest person in the room, but make sure that you are willing to outwork everyone in the room. Don’t be scared to take on tough assignments or dive in to the “unknown” when asked.

TAYLAR HACK | 32

Operations Vice President

Benedictine Living Community - Bismarck

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born and raised in the small rural setting of Ellendale, North Dakota, which gave me the opportunity to truly understand what it means to live in community. After graduating from Ellendale public schools in 2010, I attended Valley City State University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Social/Political Science. While considering the next step of law school, I took the dreaded semester off and never looked back. In 2014 I began my career with Benedictine and have enjoyed each day since. Currently, I reside in Bismarck with my daughter, Everly, who attends pre-school at Shiloh.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Witnessing the success of those around me continues to push me to succeed. At times we may all experience personal success, but I truly believe that is simply an indication of those we surround ourselves with. Being raised in a family heavily involved with sports and teamwork, it motivates me to see my teammates (coworkers) have a high degree of success. Within my 10-year career at Benedictine, I find daily motivation from our continued mission to serve older adults and the elderly in need of care. The organization has provided me many opportunities for growth of which I’m grateful.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Being a younger professional comes with many challenges of earning each step we take. In a world that relies on social norms, it often becomes challenging when a resume may not match desires or success had. My focus is to continue to challenge these norms, set goals high, and push myself and others to reach new heights.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Often times we attempt to script our lives or careers at a very young age. I am a big believer that people should not enter their working life with a preset agenda. Build meaningful relationships with those that surround you, treat each person with respect, and be a sponge. Be open to new opportunities and the chance to learn from the people and situations around you, and embrace challenges. By doing so, you may be surprised with the outcome.

CASSIDY HARTMAN | 30

Director of Business Development

Consolidated Construction Company, Inc.

Owner

Bubbles and Brews ND

Travel Advisor

All Travel Matters

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a degree in Business Leadership and Marketing. My path led me to my current role as Director of Business Development for Consolidated Construction, where I have proudly been helping clients meet their construction goals alongside our skilled team for the past five years.

In 2021, my good friend/business partner, Krysten Faehnrich, and I began our journey into entrepreneurship by starting a mobile bar business, Bubbles and Brews ND. I am excited to be celebrating three years of operating a small business this fall! In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family, watching our little boy grow, going fishing, camping and traveling together. My passion for travel also led me to become a travel advisor where I get to curate trips for people all over the world.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My family is my greatest motivation to be the best person that I can be, especially after becoming a mom. My clients also motivate and inspire me every day. I am grateful for the opportunity to get to work with all types of people across the Midwest and it is very rewarding when they put trust in me to help reach their business or personal goals.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Whether it be product delays, the weather, or unforeseen circumstances, challenges can arise no matter how well you prepare. I’ve learned to think strategically and be flexible when a problem presents itself rather than looking at it as a dead end. It is important to me to build relationships where open communication is a priority so that everyone has confidence in one another to work toward a solution.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Focus on your personal talents, what you enjoy doing, and build on that – even hobbies can turn into career opportunities if you have a vision. Additionally, attitudes are contagious. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will give you support, advice, mentorship and of course, cheer you on when you succeed.

CALEB HAUFF | 32

Co-Founder, Technical Director

Threefold

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

Born and raised in Bismarck, I’m proud to still call it home today. I first became interested in video 16 years ago and have pursued it ever since. I started Threefold with my brother, Keenan, in 2014 and today I get to work alongside an incredible team where we get to problem solve everyday. Outside of the office, I love spending time with my family and friends, cooking, exploring the outdoors, and taking care of a variety of different plants.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

The creative problem solving in video production is what keeps me motivated every day. There is always something new to learn, research, or discover to better serve our clients and team.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

The biggest challenge is the juggling act between working in the business while also working on the business. It can quickly make you feel spread thin and like one or the other is always being neglected.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Discover something you enjoy and commit to it. There are usually several career paths that can bring you both satisfaction and fulfillment. It’s tempting to think that the grass is always greener on the other side, but true expertise comes from dedicating yourself to a chosen path for the long term.

DANA HENRY | 37 Staff Accountant

North Dakota Information Technology

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am a driven and detail-oriented professional passionate about compliance, volunteerism, and athletics. My career in public service has been diverse and impactful, spanning roles in K-12 education, higher education, non-profits, and state government. Since settling in North Dakota in 2020, I transitioned from a compliance officer at the State Tax Commissioner’s Office to an accounting role with the Information Technology Department in 2023. Beyond my career, I am dedicated to sports officiating, notably as North Dakota’s first female wrestling official, and officiating volleyball at the high school and collegiate levels. Additionally, I find great fulfillment in pageantry, having proudly served as Miss Continental Worldwide 2024, focusing on community engagement through my platform, GIVE: Get Involved in Volunteer Efforts.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I am deeply motivated by purpose and impact, both in my professional endeavors and through volunteerism aimed at positively influencing my community. Achieving goals and surpassing expectations are integral to my drive, pushing me to continuously learn and grow while expanding my skills and knowledge base.”

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

My journey has been marked by diverse educational pursuits and multiple relocations, initially posing challenges in finding my professional niche. Despite these obstacles, I utilized these experiences to pivot into accounting, earning my fifth degree and finding satisfaction in my current role with the state. Each transition has shaped my path and refined my career focus all while staying true to my desire to remain in the public sector.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Embrace career twists as opportunities for growth and discovery. Pursue your passions relentlessly, even if it means exploring different industries or educational paths. Seek mentors for guidance, prioritize continuous learning, and contribute meaningfully to your community—it’s a journey that shapes both personal and professional success.

BLAKE HOLMAN | 37

Assistant Vice President & Trust Officer

First Western Bank & Trust

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born and raised in rural western Montana. I love golfing, bowhunting, every manner of fishing, and am an avid reader. My reading preferences are somewhat eclectic, but orient primarily around social economics (Thomas Sowell), fantasy (Robert Jordan), and historical non-fiction.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I am motivated by the desire to be a better version of myself and by fear becoming complacent. I strive to improve as a father, husband, friend, and professional each year. Consistent, marginal progress toward those goals will, hopefully, prevent me from stagnating either personally or professionally. Like most parents, I want my kids to have opportunities I didn’t and a chance to be the best version of themselves. To do that, I have to set an example for them to follow and stay hungry.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

The biggest challenge I faced was finding an employer willing to give me a chance. Secondary to that challenge was accepting that, as a new-hire, I didn’t yet have the skills or knowledge to make meaningful contributions. I used that feeling of inadequacy to motivate my self-study and to ask questions of my boss and mentor.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Find a way to create real, measurable value for yourself and your organization. It helps if you take advantage of training and professional certifications. Don’t confine education to high school and college. Instead, let it be a life-long pursuit. If possible, join a company that encourages you to take chances and will reward you for succeeding. The maxim that ‘luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity’ will serve you well.

MICHELLE KAUFMAN | 39

Entrepreneur & Small Business(es) Owner

The Paddle Trap, The Taco Trap, Sixteen03 Main Events, Venue

Twenty5, The Post Events, The Event Design Agency, The Tipsy 2Horse and Kitschy POP Inc.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

Steve and I were born and raised in Bismarck. We left for five years while I attended college and grad school at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA and Steve advanced his home building and remodeling skills. After graduating with my MBA we decided to come back because all of our plans seemed much more possible here, with this community and our support system being close. When I’m not at work, I love spending time with my friends and family. There is nothing I love more than catching up with a friend or business partner at lunch, finding an excuse to travel somewhere, or hanging out at home with my kids, horses, dogs, cats, and chickens.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

When I see a business, building, or idea not reaching its full potential I can’t resist trying to get my hands on it to see if I can make it better. I love solving problems and dreaming up new ways to add value to the community. Fortunately, Steve has the skills to take those ideas and turn them into reality with his commercial remodeling background. When I see someone enjoying something that we’ve created it’s the ultimate motivator for me to do more and do it better.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

The major challenges I continue to encounter along the way include finding enough of the right people, capitalizing these projects without taking on risky debt, and my ideas running ahead of current city codes and licensing regulations.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone; but if you can’t imagine doing anything else then just go for it. Don’t be afraid to fail, I have, and it made me better, and most importantly, don’t get discouraged by anyone’s opinions about what you are doing; they usually can’t see your vision until it’s finished and that’s ok.

ARIANA KINNISCHTZKE | 33

Clinical Director

Kids In Motion Pediatric Therapy & Wellness

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m an Occupational Therapist with over eight years of experience, specializing in pediatrics with a focus on neuro-development. Prior to my career, I represented North Dakota as Miss North Dakota 2011, advocating for children’s health through the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Currently, I am serving on the advocacy committee with the ND Occupational Therapy Association Mental Health Task Force - a role that was fueled by my own journey with postpartum depression, coupled with witnessing my mother’s struggle with mental health in the last year of her life.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Excellence. However, it’s not about achieving a standard set by others. It’s about the commitment to personal excellence. My mother was a remarkable woman who excelled in her career while seamlessly balancing the demands of family life. Her ability to dedicate herself wholeheartedly to both her profession and our family had a profound impact on me. She instilled in me the values of dedication, resilience, and compassion, which continue to guide me. I strive to honor her legacy through my commitment to excellence in both my career and family life.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

In my career, I’ve encountered challenges that often stemmed from how others perceived me—whether it was my age, my ambitions, or my background in pageantry. These hurdles could have discouraged me, but instead, they fueled my determination to prove myself and shaped me into a more empathetic and driven professional. I’m grateful for the people in my life who saw my potential and gave me an opportunity for growth. My experience has taught me the importance of staying true to myself and my goals, no matter the opinions of others.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My dad always told me, ‘Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life,’ and I’ve found truth in those words extends beyond my career. While work brings immense purpose, in my experience, prioritizing both personal happiness and professional growth can create a life that is not only successful but deeply fulfilling.

ALEXANDER MABIN | 36

Chief Operating Officer/ Owner Agency MABU

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born and raised in Bismarck, graduating from BHS in 2006. I attended Mount St. Mary’s University on a golf and academic scholarship, majoring in International Studies with minors in Economics and Italian. I then earned my MBA from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

I met my wife in college, and we settled in the Washington D.C. metro area for the next decade. Professionally, I served as a Press Intern on Capitol Hill and a Senior Consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton before opening the D.C. branch of Agency MABU in 2012.

At MABU, I started as an account manager and advanced to Executive Vice President, eventually becoming a part owner and COO. My current responsibilities include business strategy and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the business.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I aim to create thriving business(es) that are successful, fulfilling, and impactful for our clients, shareholders, and employees. Day-to-day, I love variety, solving complex business challenges, and synthesizing complicated information into clear, actionable solutions.

Together, we can do good

The energy and collaborative vision of young leaders drives a community forward. Congratulations to all the recipients, and our own Alexander Mabin, COO.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

I’ve had to embrace being a generalist rather than a specialist— being proficient in many areas without a singular focus. I wasn’t one who always knew what they wanted to be from a young age, which was challenging at first. However, I’ve come to embrace the idea that versatility is a specialty in itself, especially when owning a business. I love that my job allows me to jump from client meetings to HR to business strategy and back, all in the same day.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Early in your career, seek opportunities that expose you to all aspects of your profession. This will help you hone your skills, discover the areas you enjoy and excel in, and have a well-rounded understanding as you move into leadership positions. Overall, be solution-oriented, challenge yourself, and strive to make the greatest possible impact in every situation.

JAKE MELLMER | 36

Vice President, Operations

Sanford Health

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I was born and raised in Dickinson, North Dakota, graduating from Dickinson Trinity High School. During my youth, I coached wrestling and worked with my dad (electrician), saving money for college. I committed to the University of Minnesota on a wrestling scholarship, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 2010. Thereafter, I returned to North Dakota and accepted a graduate assistant wrestling coach position at the University of Mary while completing an MBA, focusing in healthcare administration.

My wife and I married in June of 2012 and, soon after, started our family with the birth of our first son in June 2013, while deciding to make Bismarck our home. My official career began with Medcenter One/Sanford Health as the manager of human resources as well as the maintenance, laundry and environmental services departments of a small skilled nursing facility. Two and a half years later, I was hired as the north and south family medicine clinic director for Sanford Health and have been working in the operational environment of the health system since.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Competition has always been a primary motivator. My parents instilled this drive with all of five of their children (I am number four), in every aspect of life – academics, sports, work, etc. My competitive nature has evolved, as I have grown both personally and professionally, adapting to different challenges during my adult life and career. Making a difference by being involved in expanding access and providing services in our region of healthcare is rewarding and continues to motivate me every day.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Sanford Health has presented a wide array of challenges during my career. I have not shied away from any challenge presented to me. Rather, I have looked at them as opportunities for growth. Every profession presents challenges, difficulties and opportunities. I’ve been fortunate to learn and develop with guidance from many successful leaders and peers.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Change is one of the toughest challenges and is inevitable in any profession. Embrace the change; lean on your peers, listen to your teams, consult your mentors, respect leaders and consider all of their feedback when navigating whatever the challenge may be. Relationships and networking, both internal and external, have proven to be beneficial presenting alternative approaches and a fresh perspective for my professional career.

DR. JACOB RETZER, DPT | 35

Owner/Physical Therapist Unbound Physical and Performance

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I grew up in the mountains outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico where I enjoyed spending time outside hiking, camping, hunting, biking and snowboarding. After graduating high school I attended the University of New Mexico in which I received my bachelors degree in biology and psychology. After completing my undergraduate education I completed my doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota.

After completing my doctoral education, my family and I moved to rural Montana where I was able to practice and hone my skills as a therapist working with individuals across the lifespan. Being a primary care provider in a rural area helped solidify the importance of treating the whole person and not just the physical ailments that they are experiencing.

After four years in Montana my family and I decided to move back to Bismarck where I worked in multiple settings before deciding to open my own clinic. This decision came from the desire to provide individuals with the highest level of one on one care helping them to take control of their health. My goal is to help patients alleviate pain, increase performance and assist them in becoming the best version of themselves. When not in the clinic, I enjoy being outdoors with my wife and two children camping, hiking and hunting.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My biggest motivator is my family because they provide unwavering support and encouragement, fueling my drive to succeed. Their belief in my vision inspires me to push through challenges and strive for excellence. Ensuring a secure and prosperous future for my loved ones gives me a profound sense of purpose and determination.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Balancing patient care with the demands of running a business can be incredibly challenging. Navigating administrative tasks, billing complexities, and maintaining a steady flow of clients while providing high-quality, personalized treatment requires constant dedication and adaptability.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Mastering the art of clear communication and honing critical thinking skills are essential, as they enable effective problem-solving and foster strong, collaborative relationships in any field.

AMBER RUZICKA | 37

HR Business Partner

Basin Electric Power Cooperative

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I grew up on a farm just outside Kenmare, North Dakota, my upbringing was filled with active participation in school organizations and sports. I attended Minot State University, where I graduated and began a new chapter with the Department of Human Services. This opportunity took me to Bismarck in 2010, a city that I have proudly called home ever since.

My professional journey continued to evolve as I spent six years at United Way as their Operations Manager, followed by a rewarding five-year tenure at Bobcat. Beyond my career, I cherish quality time with my family, whether it’s enjoying sunny days at the lake and camping in the summer or hitting the slopes for some skiing in the winter.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Simple enough – my family. But also my top five strengths—Discipline, Strategic, Responsibility, Arranger, and Deliberative—fuel my passion for executing and seeing projects through to a successful completion. Whether it’s meticulously planning a memorable party or collaborating with a team on a complex project, I thrive on the satisfaction and reward that comes from accomplishing something great.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

I’ve been fortunate in my career. At a pivotal moment, my husband faced a potential job relocation, which led us to decide that I would accompany him.

Once we discovered we would stay in Bismarck, I faced a choice: continue in marketing or try something new? I chose the latter, relying on my network and adaptability.

This decision was challenging but rewarding, shaping my career in unexpected ways. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, reinforced the power of adaptability, and the importance of trusting your instincts and connections. I haven’t looked back since, and this experience has shown the benefits of embracing change and seizing new opportunities.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

1. EMBRACE OPPORTUNITIES: Your career may not follow a straight path. I studied public relations and advertising but moved into human resources. Don’t fear uncharted territories; risks can lead to unexpected, fulfilling prospects.

2. NETWORK: Engaging with your community builds connections and a support system, leading to unexpected opportunities and collaborations.

3. ENJOY THE JOURNEY: Set goals but enjoy the process. Stay true to your values and seek roles that resonate with your purpose and passion for greater satisfaction and motivation, even when facing challenges.

KRISTYN STECKLER | 37

Partner & Managing Broker

The CRA Group, LLC

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I am a proud native of Bismarck, having graduated from Bismarck High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Mary. Currently, I am the managing broker and co-owner of a commercial real estate brokerage my business partner and I established in 2019.

I live on a small ranch southeast of Bismarck with my husband, daughter, and son. When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time with our animals, working on our jewelry business with my daughter, watching my son’s sports activities, and engaging in outdoor activities like camping and hunting.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I am driven by the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Helping individuals and businesses find the perfect office space, retail location, or commercial land to achieve their goals and dreams is incredibly fulfilling. Oh, and of course music!

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Balancing family and personal priorities has been crucial to my success both in and out of the office. Additionally, navigating a traditionally male-dominated industry as a young female has presented its own set of challenges.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Embrace continuous growth by constantly learning and developing both personally and professionally. Don’t shy away from risks— ensure they are well-calculated. Networking is essential, and being genuine in your interactions can significantly impact your career.

JONATHAN TERNES | 38

Director of Operations

Bismarck Air Medical

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I grew up in Washburn, North Dakota. I joined the Army in 2002 and left for Basic Combat Training “BCT” between my junior and senior summer. I graduated from Washburn High School in 2004. After graduation I left for Army active-duty service as a UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Crew Chief & Mechanic. I was stationed in Germany, Iraq, and Kansas. My military service obligation ended in 2010.

After leaving the Army, I attended the University of North Dakota. While at UND I obtained my Commercial Pilots License, Certified Flight Instructor”, Certified Instrument Instructor “CFII”, and Multi-Engine Instructor Ratings “MEI”. I graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics.

I stayed at UND working as a flight instructor providing primary and secondary flight training to undergraduate students, and contract students for Air China, and Shandong Airlines. I left UND in 2014.

I have more than 19 years experience flying including my Army career. I have worked for ExpressJet Airlines under the United Express brand; another FAA Part 135-air carrier and I have worked for Bismarck Air Medical/ Bismarck Air since 2016. I have been the Director of Operations for Bismarck Air Medical since 2018.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My family, friends, co-workers, and helping others.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

A challenge all pilots face is what career path do you want to chase. You must figure out the work/ home life balance you want. When I was flying for the airlines, I would commute to Fargo and hop on a commercial flight to Chicago to start my shift. I had very little time at home with my young son and I wanted to be there more for him.

I ultimately chose a career with Bismarck Air Medical where the schedule would allow me to be home almost every night. I was able to continue to pursue my love of flying and being home for my family. I soon found the spark in my work that I had been missing since I left the military.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Be dependable. Maintain your ethics and have empathy. Continue to improve yourself with additional education. Manage your time with a work life/ home balance.

DESTINY VOTH | 35

Gate City Bank

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I’m a mother to two wonderful children, Paxten and Dekker. Jaden, my husband, is my support system. I’m a Retail Manager at Gate City Bank, where I’ve worked for 16 years. At the bank, I get to do what I love: work with people and give back to the community that I live in. I enjoy being active and outside; hiking, swimming, and volleyball are a few passions of mine.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My children! They inspire me to be a better person and work to better the community that we live in for them and for their future.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH: Keeping up with changes.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Ask questions and stay curious. So many issues can be resolved by open communication. If you’re passionate about something, stick with it!

GRANT ZINKE | 35

Director of Facility Management Safety Officer/ Emergency Management Coordinator

CHI St. Alexius Health

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:

I grew up in Mandan and moved back home in 2019 after a four year stint out in Oregon where I worked at Intel. I graduated from Bismarck State College with a degree in Process Operations. I am grateful for this tight-knit community and for all the connections I have made over the past few years.

In the summer you can catch me in my pontoon on the Missouri River or at home tending to my yard! My hobbies include traveling, attending concerts, hunting, and coaching my kids sports.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

My motivation comes from all the patients, staff, and visitors who enter the hospital each and every day. My department determines their experience from the moment they come onto the property. The parking lot, sidewalks, entryways, the lighting, elevators, the heating/cooling and everything else on the path to their destination within these walls! Knowing I get to make a difference in somebody’s day puts a smile on my face every morning as I walk into work.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH:

Hospital operations bring a new challenge every day. Being able to adapt and problem solve on the fly is a big part of the job. We are constantly finding the resources and tools we need to better serve our community.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Show up every day and put your best foot forward. Smile, put your head down, and get to work. All that hard work you are putting in behind the scenes will get noticed.

Treat every person the same, whatever their job title may be. Every employee in your company has a purpose and we all need each other to be successful.

Q2 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

In Q2 of 2024 the Chamber EDC continued and began work in a variety of economic development efforts. The team set goals to assist in the education of tax incentives and how they can be used, define affordable housing and how it impacts workforce and find ways to provide financial literacy to childcare providers. In Q2 the Vision Fund committee reviewed 6 applications and 3 were brought to the City Commission. $667,796 were requested and $426,804 were approved. The committee also provided 7 letters of support for the North Dakota Opportunity Fund.

Indicators in this report include tax collections, taxable sales and purchases, real estate, residential new construction, transportation, population, and cost of living.

The Chamber EDC also continued their efforts in workforce and business development. Internship Network gave interns from all over the world the opportunity to build connections with other interns and our community. Educator Experience invited teachers from middle and high schools across the area to learn about the career paths they teach their students directly from the professionals themselves. The Chamber EDC has formed a partnership with Global Neighbors to beginning the New Americans Leadership Program. This program is designed after our Leadership Bismarck Mandan program but has a focus on integrating New Americans into our community and giving them the tools they need to succeed. The team collaborated with the Bismarck-Mandan CVB to connect with energy industry leaders at the Williston Basin Petroleum Council. Through web, print, social media, and email the team continues primary sector recruitment and is planning new ways to connect with businesses about the opportunities available in Bismarck-Mandan.

In Q3 of 2024 the team will put additional focus on the steering committee for land development code, the Keep It Local Property Tax Coalition, and hosting the EDND conference here in Bismarck. To learn more about our Economic Development efforts, connect with Nathan at nschneider@bmcedc.com or visit bismarckmandanedc.com.

ECONOMY

Production will be completed by Chamber EDC member Threefold and will continue through June of 2025.

NEW AMERICAN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

This program is designed to help integrate New Americans into the community by presenting them opportunities to establish relationships and ties to the Bismarck-Mandan community.

Participants will explore topics such as leadership, finance, medicine, entrepreneurship, education, taxes, insurance and benefits, non-profits and community resources, and BismarckMandan history. This group will kickoff in September, meeting onsite at different businesses every month to cover these topics.

Is it important for my business to track and measure marketing performance? How can I use it to better my marketing?

Tracking your marketing performance is beyond important for your business. It gives you valuable insights into what kind of marketing your customers resonate with, helping you allocate your resources effectively to maximize your budget.

Get started by setting clear goals and using tools like Google Analytics or social media analytics to track your progress. Keep your eye on the data, experiment with different strategies, and adjust based on what’s working and what isn’t. Doing this will help you make informed decisions instead of guessing, leading to smarter marketing and business growth!

I would love to chat with you about how to track and optimize your business. Send me an email at hannah@hexahive.co to get started!

Who owns AI generated content?

The mainstream use of AI, or Artificial Intelligence, in business cases is growing. With that, we need to know what is considered copyright: intellectual property that protects original works of authorship.

Everyone can be a copyright owner, if the work was created by a human and is original. Everyone is also a copyright user; every time you read a book, watch a movie, listen to music, you are using copyright-protected work. Works that are never copyright protected, like facts or works whose protected term as expired, are in the public domain and available for use.

The U.S. Copyright Office is working on an initiative to assess the impact of generative AI on copyright law and policy. As of now, AI-generated content cannot be copyrighted unless there is significant human input. The AI input must be stated in the application for copyrights.

If you have created works using AI, you, as the human creator, are allowed to apply for a copyright.

We are updating the offices in our building with new colors, furniture, and accents. How can you help us with selecting and placing artwork?

As a concierge service, we pride ourselves in working directly with the client in this way. We’ll start by offering a free consultation – what color palettes are you working with? The consultation also includes an invitation to visit Masters Gallery, where you can see the variety of artwork we offer, which includes bronzes, paintings, and limited-edition photography. You can also visit our website to see some samples of artwork (MastersGallery.net).

If you select something from Masters Gallery, we offer complementary delivery and installation in the local area.

The eight artists we represent are all Master Artists whose work stands the test of time, and we are confident that you would find something you like at Masters Gallery. Just give us a call or send an email to get the conversation started!

What steps should I take when preparing to transition my family farm?

As the American farming population ages, planning for a smooth transition in family farms is crucial to ensure their longevity and the retirement aspirations of current owners. Early and thorough planning involves three key stages: gaining financial clarity, estate planning, and defining the transition process. First, you must understand your farm’s financial health by regularly reviewing key metrics and documents, including balance sheets and net income statements. Next, you’ll want to focus on estate planning with strategies to minimize tax burdens through exemptions, trusts, and partnerships, ensuring wealth transitions efficiently. Finally, develop a transition plan that preserves your farm’s legacy, aligns with the goals of all stakeholders, and addresses potential challenges.

To ensure a successful transition, you must prepare early. And while planning for the next generation in your family farm business can feel overwhelming, you don’t have to do it alone. Learn more about how we help at eidebailly.com.

Can Acupuncture and DBB help you with infertility?

Infertility can affect both men and women. Acupuncture, along with herbal medicine has been used for centuries to treat some, if not all, causes of infertility. Acupuncture has been studied to increase blood flow to the endometrium, regulate the menstrual cycle, and improve ovarian and follicular function when it comes to female infertility. In the case for men, it has been studied to improve sperm motility, sperm count, and sperm morphology.

NE Wellness encourages women to receive acupuncture pre and post IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), or donor-egg transfer to increase higher and positive results. We recommend 4-24 hours prior to receiving the treatment and continuing weekly acupuncture throughout the entire length from conception to birth.

If you have any questions on how or when to start please contact us at northeastwellnessnd@gmail.com.

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

I’m Mike Houle, owner, along with Brian Beattie. Brian and I are optometrists practicing in Bismarck, almost forever, and for the last five years, we’ve been co-owners of Wide Eyed. Our role is to provide the vision (no pun intended.) That vision includes:

• Provide remarkable customer service

• Offer a unique customer experience

• Remain firmly independent

• Be stubborn about providing high quality products at fair prices

• Support supplies and vendors who share our vision, whenever possible.

• And not take ourselves too seriously!

Stacy, our incredible manager, keeps us on track and oversees the coffee shop and optical (as well as our optometry practice.) We are blessed to have a committed, remarkable staff who absolutely share our vision, and we couldn’t do any of it without them.

WIDE EYED MEMBER SINCE 2020

Briefly tell us about the history behind Wide Eyed and how you got started.

Wide Eyed is our coffee shop and optical located in Northbrook Professional Center at 1929 N Washington Street in Bismarck. You’ll find us just inside the main west facing door #5.

In 2019, we found the location for our current optometry practice. Brian did a great job reconfiguring the space for us but there wasn’t enough square footage for our optical. Fortunately, Northbook had a vacant space just down the hall from our practice. The space was previously a coffee shop and had recently closed. I had envisioned a combination coffee shop and optical since closing the local Pearle Vision franchise in 2006. Our new location provided the perfect opportunity to try it. We gutted and remodeled the former coffee shop, purchased all new equipment for the coffee shop and reworked the frame displays from our old office. This created a space that includes full coffee shop offerings and an optical providing high quality eyewear and sunwear.

On July 8, 2019, Wide Eyed opened for business and we sold our first coffee drinks and quality eyewear.

Wide Eyed has been a Chamber EDC member since 2020.

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Wide Eyed?

It’s difficult to judge the impact since we’re only five years old and during that time we’ve navigated COVID-19. Certainly the population growth has led to an increased number of coffee shops, so it’s safe to say competition has increased. Additional opticals have opened as well.

What trends are taking place in your industry?

For coffee, industry wide, wholesale costs and retail prices keep going up but the coffee customers seem committed to their favorite drinks as sales continue to grow. Drive up service is very popular. Locally, iced drinks are more popular with the younger coffee drinks. Also, plant based “milks” like almond and oat continue to gain popularity.

On the optical side, the current trend is, almost anything goes. From large, but well-fitting frames to classic and retro styles. Colors range from transparent to bold and matte to shiny. Materials range from plastics to metals to combinations. Sunwear trends toward large and bold but really, every size and shape imaginable, and especially retro. Lens options are almost never-ending. Working with an experienced and knowledgeable optician (ideally one who doesn’t work on commission) is the best way to find the ideal lens material, design and coating(s) to meet individual needs and visual demands. Our opticians meet this criteria.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

Like everyone, we were hit hard by COVID-19. Rapidly rising costs impacted us even more than supply chain issues. This was the case for both the coffee side and the optical side of the business.

For the coffee side, drive-up service has always been popular. During COVID-19, it seemed everything became available as drive-up, and for coffee, it became even more popular. Although it’s only 20 steps from a parking space to our coffee counter, the lack of drive-up service at our location does create a challenge.

For the optical side, online purchases for eyewear increased during COVID. Winning back customers requires foot traffic. Customers need to experience old school customer service and actually handle the products to truly appreciate the quality and value. Getting customers off their computers and phones and into the optical is more challenging than ever.

What does the future Wide Eyed and the industry as a whole look like to you?

At Wide Eyed, we are incredibly optimistic! Our location is on the way to many Bismarck destinations and our following continues to grow. Interior updates are in the works for Northbrook and additional seating will be available as needed. With continuing positive feedback from our coffee and optical patrons, we expect to be a fixture in the middle of Bismarck for a long time to come.

For the industry as a whole, coffee shows no sign of slowing, however increasing cost of goods sold and challenges in the labor market make everything less predictable.

Meanwhile, the optical industry is constantly changing with major mergers occurring nationally and even internationally. More and more independent and Mom & Pop companies are being taken over by large corporations and private equity groups. These companies seldom share the vision of the original owners. The result is less competition between vendors and increased pressures on remaining independents. We continue to seek out vendors and suppliers who still appreciate our approach to doing business.

Wide Eyed became a Chamber EDC member in 2020, why do you continue to renew?

Being Chamber EDC members allows us to stay-up-to date and in-touch with the local business environment. We appreciate having access to current economic data and population demographics and the Chamber EDC Connection enables us to keep abreast of local business happenings.

What should other Chamber EDC members know about Wide Eyed that may assist them?

You are always welcome at Wide Eyed! The coffee shop and optical are absolutely intended for everyone. Wide Eyed was never intended to be only for our optometry patients. To some patrons, we’re a coffee shop that sells eyewear and to others, we’re an optical that has a coffee shop inside.

Our full-time barista provides coffee and espresso drinks from 7:20am – 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Optical services are available from 8:30am – 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday and 8:30am – 3:00pm on Fridays. Summers are short, so both close at 1:00pm during June, July and August.

Outside Rxs are always welcome. We accept any valid Rx from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist. We accept some vision plans and provide paperwork and assistance filling outof-network forms for all vision plans. We are not in-network for VSP but routinely and gladly help customers file for out of network benefits. Out-of-Network benefits can be combined with our generous in-house discount plan.

Wide Eyed offers a great selection by Gucci, Saint Lauren, Etnia Barcelona and Maui Jim and popular styles by Kate Spade, RayBan and Oakley, among others.

BRAVERA BANK NAMED TO ICBA’S INDEPENDENT BANKER TOP LENDERS LIST

Bravera Bank is named number three of the top 10 Agriculture lenders for community banks with more than $1B in assets in this month’s issue of Independent Banker, the award-winning magazine of the Independent Community Bankers of America® (ICBA) and the number-one source for community banking news.

“Community banks are pillars of their communities and work hard every day to serve the unique needs of their local customers,” ICBA President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey said. “These top lenders should take pride in this recognition, knowing that their work makes a positive impact in helping their communities flourish.”

The July issue of Independent Banker highlights how these top agriculture, commercial, and consumer and mortgage loan producers are navigating the evolving economic environment while meeting the needs of their customers. This year’s standout performers have demonstrated remarkable flexibility and ingenuity while maintaining strong community ties that have contributed to their success and strong, prosperous communities.

“We appreciate this recognition by ICBA Independent Banker, which acknowledges the value of relationship banking,” said Ryan Beck, Chief Operating Officer of Bravera Bank. “We’re proud to make a difference in driving prosperity to our customers.”

Using FDIC data for 2023, Independent Banker calculated a lender score out of 100 for each community bank. The score combines the average of the bank’s percentile rank for lending concentration and loan growth in each lending category over the past year, adjusted for loan charge-offs at certain percentile thresholds.

KEEP IT LOCAL COALITION CONTINUES TO EDUCATE THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Keep It Local is a statewide coalition that opposes the initiated ballot measure, End Unfair Property Tax, that seeks to abolish property tax in North Dakota. The coalition is an ideologically broad group with a central goal of maintaining local control and keeping our communities great places to live.

The proponents of the property tax ballot measure submitted the petition signatures on

BALLOT MEASURE

END UNFAIR PROPERTY TAX is the campaign behind the initiated ballot measure.

In summary, the initiated ballot measure states:

• Political subdivisions may not raise revenue though levying any tax on assessed value of real or personal property.

• Political subdivisions may continue to levy tax if the tax was dedicated for the payment of bonded indebtedness.

• The State shall provide annual property tax revenue replacement payments to political subdivisions in an amount equal to what was levied in 2024.

Why do we pay property taxes?

Friday, June 28th. The North Dakota Secretary of State’s Office has until August 2nd to verify the signatures.

If the signatures are verified, the measure will be on the November General Election ballot.

The two BIGGEST CONCERNS with the measure:

1. There is no well vetted plan to make up the estimated $1.329 billion per year to cover property taxes to fund essential services.

2. It would take away local control of the local budget. Officials in your community know more about your community’s needs than those at the state level.

Property taxes are collected by local government (city, county, township, school and park district) to fund essential local public services. The local public services whose funding relies on property tax include, but are not limited to:

• SCHOOLS: schools receive approximately 50% of property tax funds

• PUBLIC SAFETY: police, sheriff, fire corrections

• PUBLIC WORKS: road maintenance, snow removal, street cleaning, water and waste maintenance

• COMMUNITY SERVICES: public parks, pools, recreation facilities and libraries

The constitutional measure to eliminate property taxes may sound good but would have devastating effects on North Dakota communities. Find out more information at https://www.keepitlocalnd.org

BSC BREAKS GROUND ON A MYSTICS ATHLETIC ARENA AND STUDENT CENTER

BSC student-athletes and student government representatives, the BSC community, and the Frank Bavendick family broke ground on the brand new BSC Bavendick Center on Thursday, June 27. The new facility will be the future home for collegiate sports, recreation and campus events.

The 80,000-square-foot Bavendick Center will be located at 1511 Canary Ave., where the former BSC Library was situated on the BSC campus and overlooks the MDU Resources Community Bowl and the Missouri River. The anticipated completion date is late Winter 2025 or early Spring 2026.

This isn’t just any new campus building; the BSC Bavendick Center is going to be a game-changer! It’s designed to be a place where every BSC student—past, present, and future—can come together to compete, connect and celebrate like never before and a facility that will elevate athletics to the next level for our communities’ athletes and fans. Whether it’s catching a Mystics game in the 2,000-seat arena, getting steps in on the walking track, or enjoying a variety of campus events, this facility will have it all.

In May 2023, the BSC Student Government Association (SGA) passed a resolution supporting the construction of a new facility and organized a student vote to increase the current mandatory student fee beginning in Fall 2025 to pay for a portion of the new facility. The SGA cited facility accessibility and equitability as the motivators driving their initiative. On September 27, 2023, more than 82% of the BSC student body voted in favor of the project.

The Bavendick Center will seat approximately 2,000 enthusiastic Mystics fans, which is roughly four times larger than the BSC Armory – the current home of Mystics athletics. The new facility will be home to Mystics basketball, volleyball, wrestling, esports competitions, and athletic training areas. It will also include:

• a student hub,

• intramural sports,

• an indoor walking track,

• rock-climbing walls, and

• a virtual reality sports simulator.
