ow! We are so impressed with the record level of applications for Leadership Bismarck-Mandan since 2015! This year, 37 highly qualified professionals from our area have stepped forward with a desire to increase their involvement and commitment to the Bismarck-Mandan community. This program gives regional leaders the chance to take a deeper dive into many off the issues impacting our businesses. Those selected into the program also have the opportunity to spearhead a project to improve the community. A few past Leadership Bismarck-Mandan projects that you may be familiar with include Central Dakota Children’s Choir, Art Alley, and the recent Farmland to Fine Dining event. The selection committee is currently reviewing applications and will announce selected candidates in September. Watch for the formal announcement of the 2019-2020 Leadership Bismarck-Mandan class in future Chamber EDC communications. September is a month of celebration! Specifically, at the Chamber EDC, we celebrate the outstanding success of local businesses. On September 17, we will host Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan where businesses and their leaders will be honored for accomplishments in the following categories: Small Business Person of the Year, Mike Fink Award for Steady Growth and Profitability, New Entrepreneur of the Year, Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Granite Award, Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and the Golden Eagle recipient. I hope you can join us for this exciting event honoring the progress business has made in the community over the past year. Lastly, thank you all for your input on the Chamber EDC’s strategic plan. Jason Matthews with JM Strategies facilitated a lively and diverse process, allowing the board to capture input from a wide cross section of our membership on a variety of topics impacting our organization and the business community. The staff and executive committee are in the process of processing the data collected and formalizing the three-year strategic plan for the organization. We look forward to unveiling the finalized road map to you later this year.

BSC HEALTH SCIENCES: BUILDING THE FUTURE’S HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE The health sciences programs at Bismarck State College (BSC) are now housed in a newly renovated building on the BSC campus. Formerly home to Unisys at the east edge of the campus, the building was purchased by the BSC Foundation in 2014. A capital campaign to raise $8 million for its renovation began in 2018, and with the help of an $8.9 million appropriation by the 2019 Legislature, BSC was able to purchase the building from the Foundation and complete Phase I of the renovation of the state-of-the-art facility.

A STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY
“We have tried to emulate the real, workplace experience as best we could for our students,” says Carla Hixson, dean of Current and Emerging Technology. “As technology improves, our facility can give students a more well-rounded experience. They are now exposed to so many more simulations in this building.” The new health sciences building provides expanded learning opportunities and technology for the college’s nursing, emergency medical technician (EMT)/paramedic, surgical technology and certified nursing assistant (CNA) programs. “BSC Foundation board members, business partners and advisory board members have supported us financially and with their work to ensure our new space reflects the latest in healthcare technology,” says Skogen.

The building houses classrooms for each program with IVN network capabilities, allowing students from across the state and at other educational institutions to take part in the programs at BSC. On site, six state-of-theart simulation rooms allow nursing students to practice different situations they will encounter on the job, including labor and delivery, pediatrics and cardiac care. The EMT/ paramedic instructional area houses an ambulance bay with a variety of scenario scenes, including a living room and kitchen, as well as a full-sized ambulance simulation space. The surgical technology classroom has storage for all surgical instruments to be laid out in drawers for teaching, studying and testing and the area also includes two surgical simulation rooms. The CNA classroom and training area was expanded and now provides for additional class availability and shorter testing times. A nurses’ station also provides a central location to tie all the classroom and simulation facilities together to create a hospital setting.

BSC health sciences was also awarded a USDA grant to convert an old ambulance to a mobile lab, which can travel to rural locations and provide hands-on training at additional facilities.

Hixson says, in the future, the programs at the health sciences building hope to use the facility to create a full hospital simulation for its students to practice their skills together from ambulance to surgery and laboratory. Phase II of the building renovation project, slated to begin in January 2020, will complete the space designated for classroom and training facilities for the medical laboratory technician program. “This building is designed to expand, and there is a lot of opportunity to continue to meet the healthcare needs of the community,” Hixson notes. “BSC is here to serve the community and region by providing the workforce they need.”

“The building provides a virtual hospital experience with simulations to prepare our students every step of the way for what they’ll find on the job,” continues Skogen. “What we offer now deepens our programs and elevates awareness of BSC’s health sciences options. From location to technology, we can showcase the programs, recruit more students and contribute to better filling this workforce gap.”

Kevin Magstadt MEMBER SINCE 2018 Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within your business. A: Kevin and Kris Magstadt are the owners of the business with their primary responsibility is to support an awesome team that do the day to day work. We are blessed with an amazing team. Those that are not family, are extended family! Q: Briefly tell us the history of Maximum Detailing. A: Maximum Detailing was founded in April of 2018. It had long been a dream of Kevin’s to own a small business and support the communities of Bismarck/Mandan. Our son, Eric, who has always had in interest in cars, quickly joined in on the action, and our daughter, Nicole, followed suit by providing graphic design and marketing assistance. We have found ways to work together to create marketing materials and have fun promoting in social media. The primary reason Kevin and Kris started Maximum Detailing, is a strong desire to leave a bright future for their children and grandchildren.

Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Maximum Detailing? A: The growth of our communities has impacted Maximum Detailing in several ways. First, it has provided great opportunity to provide professional detailing services to a wider customer base. Secondly, it has created more competition, which we see as an opportunity to always be looking for ways to do better and be better. Q: What trends are taking place in your industry? A: A lot of shops are using the same products that were used 10-15 years ago. At Maximum Detail, we use specific products made for cleaning/ protecting vehicles, always keeping a pulse on what is best for the always changing auto world. Vehicle purchase prices have increased over the years, making them more of an asset than ever before. It is imperative to provide the customer with the care their investment deserves and to provide 100% satisfaction.
CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: New products are always released. Ceramic coatings keep getting more durable and dependable. We have coatings not only for paint, but leather, cloth, plastic, fabric, rubber, glass, and trim. Dealing with the ever-increasing changes can be daunting at times, however, we have a team that really enjoys what they do and sincerely care about top-notch, person service. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT | CONNECTION
DIVERSE ECONOMY A POSITIVE FOR REGION When thinking about the major cities of North Dakota, it’s easy to associate an economic driver or asset with each of them. For instance, often times Minot is associated with the Minot Air Force Base and Grand Forks is associated with the University of North Dakota. The case can be made that Bismarck-Mandan is most often associated with being the State Capital and all the jobs that come along with it. However, to simply label our community as a “government town” would be misleading because in fact, we are one of the most diverse economies in the State and the Upper Midwest. To illustrate that diversity, it helps to picture Bismarck-Mandan’s economy as a pyramid with the base of that pyramid being comprised of four primary industries: government, healthcare, education and energy generation.

• Government: As the State Capital, there are thousands of State employees who live and work in our community. However, as Bismarck and Mandan are the county seats of Burleigh and Morton Counties, respectively, there are also county employees based here as well as federal employees and City employees who all serve in some capacity. Combined, those employees have a tremendous impact on our community and consequently, our economy. • Healthcare: Bismarck-Mandan’s two largest private employers are healthcare providers; CHI – St. Alexius and Sanford Health. In addition, Mid Dakota Clinic has been providing care in Bismarck-Mandan for decades along with a number of other private providers. This combination has made Bismarck-Mandan a destination for people of all ages, including those who are now living in one of our many skilled care or assisted living facilities. • Education: Often overlooked is the fact that Bismarck Public Schools is the biggest school district in the state in terms of students and as such, also employs a tremendous amount of people. Mandan Public Schools, the Light of Christ Catholic Schools and Shiloh Christian are all vibrant systems as well who employ a proportional number of staff. The same case can be made for higher education as the combined economic impact of United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck State College and University of Mary is well over $100 million.

• Energy Generation: Both Basin Electric Power Cooperative and MDU Resources are involved in generating the electricity that powers our region while Marathon Petroleum’s Mandan Refinery, BNI Coal, North American Coal and Great River Energy all have presences right here in Bismarck-Mandan. That’s not to mention all the employees who live in our community and commute daily to the region’s coal mines and power plants. Those four industries combine to form the base of our community’s economic pyramid, the core of our economy. That’s critical during times of economic uncertainty because if one of those industries is experiencing a downturn, we have three others to stabilize Bismarck-Mandan’s economy. What’s more is those ‘core four’ industries are generally those which we’ll need well into the future. Think about it. Bismarck has been the State Capital for more than 100 years and it doesn’t appear that’s changing anytime soon. Our residents, and those from around the region, will always need healthcare that is provided here. Likewise, they’ll need educational opportunities which are located here as well. And while the source of our power may change, our employers in energy and energy generation have proven time and time again that they will adapt.
CONNECTION | ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT If those four industries form the base of which our community’s economic pyramid is built, then what are the other components? Contributing even further to our community’s economic diversity is the second level that includes: agriculture, technology and manufacturing. • Agriculture: North Dakota leads the nation in the production of several agricultural commodities that upon when sold, the revenue is often spent right here in Bismarck-Mandan in our stores, restaurants and more. Whether it’s cattle to the west or crops to the east, Bismarck-Mandan’s economy is greatly impacted by agriculture. • Manufacturing: While our community is not often thought of as a manufacturing hub, we have a thriving base of manufacturers that include community stalwarts like Doosan Bobcat and Cloverdale and newer entrants such as Midwest Manufacturing. When sold, these products generate new wealth that is then distributed throughout Bismarck-Mandan. • Technology: One of the most exciting parts of Bismarck-Mandan’s continued growth is the emergence of several technology companies like NISC who has grown into an industry leader from its base in Mandan, the rapidly expanding Dakota Carrier Network and its network operations center on 43rd Ave and CoSchedule in the heart of downtown Bismarck.
For example, perhaps a family from Lemmon, SD has a doctor’s appointment in Bismarck-Mandan while they’re here, they end up doing some shopping or eating out one night. Or someone from Hettinger is catching a flight out of the Bismarck Airport and they come the night before and stay in one of our hotels. That’s how Bismarck-Mandan becomes a regional economy. Bismarck-Mandan a truly regional and diverse economy, both things which help keep the community growing. However, that doesn’t mean that we can afford to relax our economic development efforts that will add even more economic activity. The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is actively involved in economic developments aimed at generating new wealth and new jobs for our community, such as: entrepreneurial development, business retention & expansion and new business attraction. Given that we have approximately 2,500 open jobs already and an unemployment rate near 2.2%, we’re also pro-actively implementing workforce development and talent attraction efforts as well. These three industries contribute greatly to Bismarck-Mandan’s economic growth and diversity so that when combined with the aforementioned core four, support a dynamic retail and service economy. • Retail: The new dollars generated by industries like energy generation, manufacturing and more are then redistributed throughout the community when companies in those industries pay their employees who subsequently shop in Bismarck-Mandan stores. Those dollars are then used to pay the employees who staff those retail outlets who in turn spend those dollars, as well. • Service: Similar to the retail sector, when new dollars are generated by the industries in the first two levels of our economic pyramid they are then redistributed through capital investments or to their employees who in turn purchase services like healthcare, utilities or a multitude of other things. It's also important to note that this economic pyramid that keeps Bismarck-Mandan growing is supported not only by our residents, but by others from around the region. Bismarck-Mandan is a regional hub for various industries such as healthcare, transportation, retail and more meaning that people from western North Dakota, northern South Dakota and even Eastern Montana are helping those industries.

Open to juniors and seniors in all Bismarck-Mandan private and public high schools, the Chamber EDC’s Student Leadership Network is a program that aims to elevate our young adults into the professional world. This is done through a series of experiences the students go through to learn more about our community as a whole. Leadership and career development, financial literacy, and college readiness are some of the skills and education they will benefit from through this program. The students meet one day a month, for two hours out of school. The program includes six board meetings in addition to an opening and closing event. This program is an honorable activity for students to list on college applications and job resumes. BPS ENROLLMENT CONTINUES TO SPIRAL UPWARD For the 15th year in a row, Bismarck Public Schools has seen an increase in student enrollment. The district today has 13,312 students in grades K-12 for a gain of 273 students. Last year’s first day enrollment was 13,039 for a gain in 2018-19 of 178 students over the previous year. In grades K-5, enrollment has increased by 40 students across the 16 elementary schools for a total K-5 student population of 6,135. Elementary schools with the highest enrollment are Sunrise and Lincoln (653 each), Liberty (621) and Murphy (593). Those with the lowest enrollments are Roosevelt (121), Prairie Rose (143) and Will-Moore (222). The elementary schools that are over their targeted capacity are Highland Acres, Lincoln, and Sunrise. Others that are near capacity are Centennial, Grimsrud, Liberty, Murphy and Northridge. Each elementary level has more than 1,000 students except 4th grade at 997.

Middle school enrollment grew the most. The three middle schools have 3,246 students for an increase of 161 over last year at this time. Horizon has the most 6th through 8th grade students at 1,117. Wachter increased by 139 students because a larger 8th grade class moved on and a larger 6th grade class moved in. Wachter grew by 139 students for a first day total today of 1,081. Simle’s enrollment stands at 1,048. Senior high enrollment is up 72 students for a total of 3,931 over a year ago. Legacy has 1,314 students followed by Century at 1,311 and Bismarck High at 1,194. South Central, the district’s alternative high school, has a current enrollment of 112. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jason Hornbacher says, “With a secondary school enrollment increase of 233 students this year, it was with good foresight that the previous administration and School Board expanded and remodeled all three middle schools as well as the projects that continue at Bismarck High and Century.” BPS will have more firm enrollment numbers when it certifies enrollment to the state, which is 10 days after the start of school.

MANDAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS SEES A 3.64% INCREASE IN K-12 ENROLLMENT Significant increases in student enrollment continue in Mandan Public Schools. On the first day, Mandan Public Schools had 140 new students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. First-day enrollment totaled 3,990 students, which is an increase of 3.64% from the 2018-2019 school year. In the past 12 years MPS enrollment has grown by over 940 students, a 31% increase. K-5 enrollment increased by 96 students and the High School increased by 46 students while the Middle School had similar numbers for the 2018-2019 school year. The largest increases include Ft Lincoln Elementary (12.45% increase), Lewis & Clark Elementary (7.35% increase) and Red Trail Elementary (4.14% increase). Original estimates by RSP, Inc., the school district demographer, projected enrollment of approximately 3,800 students in the 2019-20 school year.

MCQUADE FAMILY, CHARITY SOFTBALL BOARD ANNOUNCE GIFT BENEFITING SANFORD POWER The McQuade Family and Charity Softball Board is announcing a $100,000 donation to the Sanford Health Foundation. The generous donation will benefit the Sanford POWER Softball Academy, a camp held for six weeks in the winter to help young athletes improve their softball mechanics and hitting. Because of the McQuade Family and Charity Softball Board’s generous gift, the softball academy will be called, the McQuade Softball Academy. The academy is a performance-training program, which will enhance athletic skill, build character and develop softball technique. The six-week program is available for players age eight and up and begins in January 2020. The main three skills focused on during the academy are hitting, fielding and pitching. “We really appreciate the opportunity for an organization like Sanford POWER to enhance the growth of softball in the area,” said Shannon McQuade. “These young athletes that will go through the academy are those players that will be playing in our charity tournament down the road. We just celebrated our 44th tournament, and it’s because of programs like this that we can look forward to many more.”

Teddi Schwagler has accepted the position of underwriting associate. Prior to joining EMC, Schwagler worked as an administrative assistant and marketing coordinator in the nonprofit sector. Schwagler has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Dickinson State University. John Coleman has accepted the position of underwriting associate. Prior to joining EMC, Coleman worked as a financial professional for a local agency for the last seven years. Coleman attended Thomas Edison State College for Business Administration. Karen Redfern has accepted the position of senior marketing representative for Oregon and southern Washington. Redfern has more than 15 years of insurance experience, starting as a claims adjuster in 2004 before moving into a marketing position. Redfern received her bachelor’s degree in media communications from Lambuth University in Tennessee, and holds the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation. Redfern will reside in the Portland, Ore., area with her family. Tom Nugteren has accepted the position of marketing representative for North Dakota. Prior to joining EMC, Nugteren worked as a claims adjuster for three years. Nugteren has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Dakota and will reside in Fargo, N.D. Creighton Barrett has accepted the position of underwriting intern. Mr. Japel has been a New York Life agent since 2007 and is associated with New York Life’s North Dakota General Office in Fargo. Jeffrey L. Japel attended Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO where he achieved a degree in Business. He is a Qualifying Member of the 2018 Million Dollar Round Table.
NDAREC WELCOMES NEW SAFETY INSTRUCTOR The North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) is proud to Mike Koenig welcome Mike Koenig as the newest addition to its organization. Koenig began his new role on Aug. 5. He will serve as a safety instructor, helping to promote safe work practices at electric cooperatives across the state. A native of Carrington, N.D., Koenig is not new to North Dakota’s electric cooperatives. Upon graduating line school in 1996, he began working as a lineman at Northern Plains Electric Cooperative, where he worked for the past 23 years. He is looking forward to the change in his career while maintaining closeness to his cooperative family and friends. Koenig lives in Carrington with his wife, Shaunette, daughter, Gracie, and son, Tyson.
PAPA'S PUMPKIN PATCH OPENS IN SEPTEMBER Since 1983, Papa’s Pumpkin Patch has become a tradition for thousands of families. In 2019 this regional attraction opens for its fall season Sunday, Sept. 8. Papa’s Pumpkin Patch is widely recognized as one of America’s best pumpkin patches, earning top rankings from the Travel Channel, Travel & Leisure, USA Today, and AAA Living. The 2019 season runs Sept. 8 – Oct. 19. The patch is open 12-7 p.m. daily. Currently over 3,500 children are scheduled for field trips to Papa’s, and Pearce expects close to 10,000 daycare and school children will visit Papa’s Pumpkin Patch during the 2019 season.
