Letter to Editor
Dear Editor,
I am here on a short visit. I have seen a copy of the newspaper and I feel it is a great achievement for the organizing team to bring forth such a wonderful newspaper. It not only helps to bring all under one single umbrella [newspaper itself]; but also share news, educational and health consciousness are valuable and is able to create some kind of oneness amongst its readers. The preaching contained in religious texts and its enlightening through authorized people is also interesting. What inspired me to write this letter to you is on account of two different aspects via the article on Alcohol Consumption by Varnakulasingham so also the article by Ms. Modi on health consciousness is good. While Varnakulamsingham opined that alcohol in its any avatar is not proved to be a substitute for conventional measures to up-keep health and thus need not to be encouraged; Ms. Modi went on covering the important aspect of mankind of essentially becoming a mother as top priority. Both articles are interesting. Similarly from religious point of view, which is the other reason for writing this letter, the write ups by Pastor Joseph, Ravi Vastrad and ML Nawaz Ashraf clearly indicates to the same thing preached through Gita. Mr. Pastor said in his article ‘When we go around making bad judgement on .......; then our outlook on life will be negative and will lead us continually to dwell in
dark’, Mr. Ravi said that the faith in God is on the driver seat so far religion is concerned and Mr. Ashraf narrated quoting from Qur’an that ‘we have not been sent to this world to live a good life, we have been sent to this world to die a good death’ and again in his article quotes Qur’an saying ‘When a body is given a soul, life begins. And when the soul leaves the body, life ends and death begins.’ A special gratitude goes to Mr. Ashraf from my personal front for giving me a chance to taste Qur’an for the first time in my life. All these point to the gist of various advices given by Krsna at Kuruskethra. The pity is that we being the followers could not conceive them and instead deviated purposefully from assimilating such useful knowledge. We went ahead to such a greater extent that not only we become irreligious in the process; but also have widely misused it for the individual benefits. The tendency of conducting research from the mid portion [Scientists conduct research on an existing body and claim proudly that such-and-such thing is the combination of such-and-such things and that in future they will be able to create such thing] by the modern science system has in fact played a vital role in deviating attention of the people from God to Dog. Therefore ‘to die a good death’ what essentially required is a sincere attempt to propagate love to religion and various scriptures thereof. Mohanan Warrier Springfield Heights

Planned burning program
INTERNA INTERNATIONAL ATIONAL COLLEGE C
2014 To protect our city’s bushland and bushland neighbours, Brisbane City Council undertakes a rolling program of fire management. Planned burning of a defined area of bushland reduces the build-up of fire fuel such as sticks and leaves, potentially reducing the effects of any future wildfires while helping maintain bushland health. Neighbours of burn areas will be notified by letterbox drop before the burn. Weather and air quality forecasts are used to determine the best day for each planned burn and therefore a date can’t be specified in advance.

To view the list of sites for planned burns this year, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and search for ‘fire management’. To be notified on the day of the burn, please phone Council on (07) 3403 8888 to speak with the Natural Environment Coordinator for your area or check Council’s Facebook or Twitter page.

Sir Peter Cosgrove sworn in as Australia’s 26th Governor-General From front page SIR Peter Cosgrove has been sworn in as Australia’s 26th Governor-General, declaring it “the greatest honour” of his family’s “fortunate lives”. The former Defence chief is the first man to be knighted under Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s revived honours system. He used his swearing-in address in the Senate on 28 March to pay tribute to Indigenous Australians, his predecessor Dame Quentin Bryce, and Cameron Corporal Baird - the special forces commando who was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross in February this year. “We hail and salute Cameron Baird,” he said. “He lives in the injured hearts of those he left too soon.” His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, as he is now known, wore his string of military medals when he arrived at Parliament House in a motorcade. Moments after being sworn in before Chief Justice Robert French he told parliamentarians, diplomats and the partially filled public galleries that he was “humbled and proud” to be assuming office and came to the role “agenda free.” “To think that I will play some part in the public discourse extends to me, my wife and family the greatest honour of our fortunate lives,” he said. He said he would seek to “reflect” the community, saying his work as Australian of the Year in 2001 had prepared him for the work ahead. “I pledge all of my energy and goodwill to all of the tasks of Australia’s governor-general, not least those working within the wider community,” he said. Indicating that his spouse will play a high-profile role, the Governor-General said his wife, Lynne Cosgrove, would be listening to Australians alongside him. “My wife and I will be attentive to any and all agenda that we encounter that sit within a broad and fundamental set of Australian values,” he said. A 21-gun salute fired as the Governor-General’s speech came to a close and His Excellency’s

Standard was unfurled. Mr Abbott welcomed Sir Peter at an official reception for the new Governor-General and his wife. “You will be a knight for rolling up your sleeves and getting on with things,” Mr Abbott said. “Every human being wants to be uplifted and inspired and I can think of no better man than Peter Cosgrove to maintain our national morale and to find faith in ourselves. “I know, Sir Peter, you will approach this work with respect, discretion and judgment, and our government and our country will be the better for it.” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten described the Governor-General as a person who “has the ear” of Australians. “Your Excellency, rest assured that when a Governor-General speaks, Australia will listen,” he said. “We look to you as a guardian of our constitution, a representative of the values and the love of country that we all share.” Sir Peter was applauded as he walked through Federal Parliament’s marble foyer shortly after receiving a general salute from a guard of honour on the Great Veranda. He was escorted into Senate president’s private suite before entering the Senate, which was packed with MPs and senators. Parliamentarians stood as the Usher of the Black Rod led the governor-general designate into the Senate chamber. Sir Peter came to national prominence in 1999, when he was appointed commander of the international peacekeeping mission in East Timor. He was appointed chief of the Army in 2000 before being appointed chief of the Defence Force in 2002. He was Australian of the Year in 2001 and retired from active service in 2005. In 2006, Sir Peter led a taskforce to rebuild communities in Queensland devastated by the category-five Cyclone Larry. Since retirement, he has worked as a non-executive director of Qantas. Students short-changed in Fiji
• Vocational Training students at Mulomulo High School, Nadi studying furniture making & building construction.
By Sarat Maharaj WHEN the current Fiji Government recently announced that it will pay school fees for ALL students, organisations such as International Congress for Fiji Inc (ICFI) was happy with the news. Happy because, since the 2003 to date, ICFI had paid over $800,000 in school fees to 12,328 students, including High School, Vocational, & Diploma Level, when the need was greatest; and that the Fiji Govt had eventually stepped in now. Then it was realised that students in Vocational Training and Diploma Level were not included in the scheme proposed by Fiji Govt. Fees for these students are almost four times that of high school students. After completing their studies at this level, most students are able to get jobs and then look after the whole family, a very crucial stage of their life. Some even choose to go for higher education after given this start in life by ICFI, because they can now self-fund their studies from here on. Not providing funding at all would
deprive many students achieving trade skills and diploma level certificates, and hence not able to get jobs. Sadly, some students have resorted to suicide, and some very young girls into prostitution. All of these activities could be avoided, only if we all act positively. At its recent AGM, management of International Congress for Fiji Inc (ICFI), has decided to continue to raise funds and pay for school fees for these students at this level. To achieve this, ICFI has organised a Live Indian Musical Evening, the “Girmit Night 2014” on Saturday 17 May 2014 at Cannon Hill Anglican College, 189 Junction Rd, Cannon Hill. For details, please visit www.icfi.org.au/girmitnight, e-mail Sarat Maharaj on regmaharaj@gmail.com, or phone on 0407 111 709. We can make a future for these young people in Fiji, through your kind donations and your patronage. “Vidya Daan, Mahaan Daan” (Educating the poor is the most noble deed).

Harmony Day Celebration By Savita Kumar IT is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day for cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. Harmony Day is celebrated on 21st of March since 1999. It is an Australian Govt. program and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Harmony Day is widely celebrated across schools and also coincides with Anti Bulling day. Orange is the colour to represent Harmony day. All Australians are encouraged to wear orange clothing or a distinctive orange ribbon to show their support for cultural diversity.
The theme for Harmony Day is “EVERYONE BELONGS.” By participating in Harmony Day activities we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it and make Australia a better place. Harmony Day aims to engage the Australian community, particularly young people, in celebrating the cohesive and inclusive nature of Australia. At St Albans Wilston Early Childhood Centre the Educators: Simone, Louisa, Felicity, Jose; the children and their families, celebrated Harmony Day this year. The Centre celebrates many different multicultural activities throughout the year. The celebrations are enjoyed by all. This year the children also celebrated St Patrick’s Day and the Indian Festival of Holi on Monday 17 March.
Legendary Wadali Brothers with Lakhwinder Wadali live in Brisbane
8 - THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, April, 2014
THE legendary Wadali Brothers performed live at Brisbane Convention Centre on 16th March. The show was presented by creative Events and Occhi Taxi Managements. Kamar Bal and Raj facilitated the Brisbane leg of the tour. Brisbane convention centre has become a popular venue for concerts of this calibre. Sufi music attracts a select audience of mainly pure music lovers well versed with ragas etc, nevertheless with names like Lakhwinder Wadali and The Wadali brothers everyone is attracted. The Wadali Brothers – Puranchand Wadali and Pyarelal Wadali – are Sufi singers and musicians from Guru Ki Wadali in the Amritsar District in Punjab, India. Born into the fifth generation of musicians given to singing the messages of Sufi saints, the Wadali brothers dabbled in the most unexpected of professions before they became Sufi singers. While Puranchand Wadali, the elder brother, was a regular in an akhara (English: wrestling ring) for 25 years,

Pyarelal contributed to the meagre family income by playing the role of Krishna in the village rasleela. Waadali brothers have been performing for a very long time and are very accomplished singers; their name commands a high respect. Indian television “Door Darshan” televised quite a lot of their performances. Members of Brisbane Babas Band supplied the backline for the Brisbane event, keyboards, Dhol, Tabla, Harmonium and Octapad. Umesh Chandra of Brisbane Babas Band also accompanied the musicians on the Octapad. The group pleased everyone with their popular numbers and their melodious voices, reaching the highs and lows with complete clarity. The group had performed in Auckland the night before and were obviously tired with the performance, travelling, setup and sound test etc, but once they were on stage there was no stopping them.

Note - The Multi-Faith Centre has had a recent name change and will now be known as the Centre for Interfaith & Cultural Dialogue (ICD). The MC, Paul Saver began the event by giving the “acknowledgement of country” in which we were all encouraged to respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which this event was taking place. He outlined the proceedings of the event and emphasized two main features of this event, presentations by five religious leaders on the theme followed by a panel Q&A and a ceremony symbolically highlighting interfaith harmony. Freya Ostapovitch MP member for Stretton welcomed the dignitaries and guests.
Each one has something unique and special to offer. High spirited and invigorating entertainment was provided by Richmond Acheampong & co. Ricky Lashand, MFC Administrative Support Officer on behalf of Brian J. Adams, Director Multi-Faith Centre, Griffith University welcomed the dignitaries and guests. Anzac Day 2014 Let Us Remember them By Janeth Deen AUSTRALIA was only a very young nation when the spirit of Nationalism inspired our young men and women to join the forces and assist the mother country in fighting the wars of the twentieth century. Most of the veterans of WW1, and the Boer War have now passed on, some of the veterans of the Korean war and WW2 are still with us. Next year, 2015, we will be celebrating the centenary of WW1 and nations around the world involved in the conflicts will be honouring their fallen heroes in a way, that will, in itself, create a new history for future generations to emulate. The earlier wars did not impact on the land mass of Australia, however WW2 did. Darwin was bombed in 1942, and most of our men and some of our women were fighting overseas. Our country was virtually defenceless. The Japanese were determined to take Australia, and could have, had it not been for the help given by the USA. We will always remember their servicemen for coming to our aid and saving our country from the horrors war inflicts. Many of our Indian migrants joined the forces to fight for their new homeland. From, Mt Gravatt, Brisbane we can remember the Kaus and Howsan families, who were willing to lay down their lives to fight an unjust war during WW2. Two of them went above the call of duty. William Bernard Kaus joined the RAAF and received the Kings Medal and a Legion of Hounour for services rendered in dangerous conflicts, including flying Nancy Wake (a famous Australian Spy) into enemy territory. He later became the Liberal Leader for Mansfield and lived to a ripe old age. Moheddeen Abdul Ghias (Bob) Howsan (pictured above) also joined the RAAF. After arriving in England in July 1941, and various formalities completed, Bob was posted to Wellesboure, Warwickshire. He had his first flight in a Wellington bomber on 8th August, 1941. He flew as second pilot on raids over Europe and then on 22nd January 1942, he was made captain of his
own aircraft. His operations included Austend, Dunkirk, Emden, Bremmen, Le Havre, Cologne, Essen, Lubech, Wysse and Poissy. His last mission on 1st April, 1942 was a special operation and his aircraft was hit and crashed in a field on the outskirts of the French village of Marly Le Roi. He had deliberately steered the plane away from the township. On Remembrance Day, 1997 the townspeople of Marly Le Roi unveiled a monument to honour the crew. He was the only Australian on the plane, two of the crew were British and two were Canadian. Bob was twenty-three when he died and had been engaged to be married, before he left for England. Bob gave his life to fight for peace, he said that every conflict would bring the war closer to an end. England erected a monument to the airmen who fought in the Battle of Britain, France erected a memorial to the crew of Bob’s plane, Australia has Bob listed on the Honour Roll at the War Memorial in Canberra. Both William Bernard Kaus and Moheddeen Abdul Ghias Kaus were the grandsons of the first Muslim family to settle in Mt Gravatt, that of Abdul Ghias Kaus, from the Indian sub-continent. “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We shall remember them.” Lawrence Binyon.

Submitted by 360 Love in Queensland, we are Taiwanese! 4am.tw THE Cross-Strait Trade Agreement with China, announced by Lawmaker of the ruling party (KMT) Chang Ching-Chung has faced strong opposition in Taiwan, protesters occupied Taiwan’s legislature on March 19 to show their opposition to the deal and to defend their hard-earned democracy. Since March 19 tens of thousands of citizens have joined them. In Brisbane a protest was organised on 27 March, the demonstration commenced in Adelaide Street (King George Square) at 3.30pm, over 300 protestors marched down Edward Street, Charlotte Street, George Street and back to King George Square. During the march, protesters shouted out slogans and appeals together enthusiastically. The agreement was announced after a short deliberation, as an independent country, when it intends to sign an agreement with another nation, legislative deliberation is a necessary procedure. It would be unconscionable to bind the citizens to an agreement without deliberation of democratic body and works. The Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement will show significant impact on nearly everything including economic, entertainment, construction and other aspects of the working nation.
Petition demands are to; 1. Repeal the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement 2. To establish Cross-Strait Supervisory Agreement 3. Call a citizen constitutional assembly 4. Implore the legislators of the opposition party to join their cause Speeches were given by the commander of the event and the public voiced their personal opinions. Different opinions were expressed and heard with respect, the event remained peaceful from beginning to end. “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. – Voltaire”

Springfield Lakes State School students take to their bikes for national day THE streets around Springfield Lakes was filled with cyclists on 19 March for the National Ride2School Day. Ipswich City Council Division 9 Councillor Sheila Ireland said as part of the Healthy Active School Travel (HAST) program, students, parents and teachers from Springfield Lakes State School had ridden/scooted and walked to school from Olive Springs Park. Cr Ireland said after arriving at school students were able to enjoy a healthy breakfast. “This year marks the eighth National Ride2School Day and the day is being celebrated by more than 250,000 students from right across Australia,” she said. “The day is designed to highlight the benefits of riding to school and creating an active travel culture within a school community. Cr Ireland said the National Ride2School Day activity was part of the HAST program being run by council. “Council is delighted to see that the
Springfield Lakes State School community has taken the HAST program to heart and has thrown its support behind this important day. “We want to make Ipswich one of the healthiest communities in Australia so every step we can take towards this goal is important."
City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the HAST program was all about encouraging Ipswich children to make healthier choices when they travel to and from school each day. Cr Bromage said Springfield Lakes State School was one of 10 Ipswich primary schools taking part in this year’s program. "Council staff is working with the participating schools to develop travel plans and deliver a program that will increase active transport within these schools,” she said. "We want to encourage school-aged children, their families and school staff to walk and cycle to school to improve their health and physical activity. "If students live only a short distance away, walking and riding to school together is a great way to encourage active life choices. "It is also a great way for parents to enjoy a morning and afternoon walk or ride when taking their children to and from school." Cr Bromage said council was pleased to be working with all of the participating schools.
“This will encourage the students to adopt healthier habits for the future as they learn to incorporate as much physical activity in their lives as possible. "We want this activity to become a regular part of their daily routine the same as combing their hair or brushing their teeth." The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Health and council have worked together to roll out the HAST program, which is an Australian Government initiative under the National Partnership Agreement for Preventative Health. The program is designed as a preventive health measures to provide local councils and schools with tools and resources to support and encourage active travel to and from school. Cr Bromage said council was working with the 24//7 Cycling Safety Fund to deliver this vital program throughout Ipswich. "Volunteers from the program work alongside council staff as they run the program at the participating schools and we thank them for their input."

IMAGES of Ipswich captured by the city’s young people are set to grace the 2014 Ipswich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY). Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale and Ipswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland officially launched the 2014 competition on 27 March. Mayor Paul Pisasale said council had decided to run the competition again after the success of the inaugural event last April. "Coinciding with National Youth Week, the 2013 event was hugely successful with 24 films submitted to the festival,” he said. “As April 10 last year was National Youth Homelessness Matters Day, the festival was based on the theme Finding Home and entrants were asked to creatively portray what this theme meant to them. “The theme was creatively interpreted by local youth with some extremely imaginative films being shown on the big screen at the red carpet finale event.” Cr Pisasale said council was looking forward to the support of young people once again for this year’s competition which will culminate with an awards night to announce the winners on October 17. “Council has secured considerable support for the festival with Limelight Cinemas Ipswich agreeing to support IFFY 2014 through free advertising, hosting of the award night/red carpet event in one of their 130 seat cinemas and the sponsoring of two award categories. “Limelight Cinema Ipswich has also agreed to provide the overall winner with the opportunity to have their film shown for a period of time (still to be determined) before their films. Cr Ireland said local youth would have until September 24 to lodge their entries so she encouraged potential entrants to get working on these now. “No entry fee will be payable in 2014 by entrants given the considerable sponsorship and support given to the festival by Limelight Cinemas, the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and Channel 9,” she said. Cr Ireland said council was thrilled once again to have the support of USQ through the Film and TV Faculty. "Their support in 2013 contributed to the success of IFFY as students from USQ assisted during the red carpet official event by inter18 - THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, April, 2014
viewing and capturing the imagines of the evening." Cr Ireland said council also planned to liaise with youth agencies and local schools to promote the IFFY. “We will be particularly targeting those schools which have film, TV and drama studies within their curriculum and encouraging students undertaking those studies to be part of IFFY.” Cr Ireland said the competition would be judged between September 29 and October 3 with the award night/red carpet event to be held at Limelight Cinemas Ipswich on October 17. “We hope to have a large number of entrants take part in this year’s competition which has the theme Play. “This theme reflects the advice from film industry experts that writers and directors need to be provided with a theme that allows not only multiple pathways for artistic interpretation, but challenges their artistic abilities and allows for personal growth. “We look forward to seeing the way in which local youth interpret this theme and turn it into an entry for the festival.” The following prizes will be awarded in each category: Primary school age: * Winner (prize value $5070) and; * Runner-up (prize value $50-70). Secondary school age: * Most creative entry (prize value $100-$150); * Best technical entry (prize value $100-$150) and; * Best use of alternative device (prize value $100-$150). Open category (Ages 17-25) * Most creative entry (prize value $200-$300); * Best technical entry (prize value $200-$300); * Best use of alternative device (prize value $200-$300) and; * Entry with most commercial appeal (prize value $200-$300). Overall winner (prize value $200-$300) plus their film screened at Limelight Cinemas Ipswich ahead of a Hollywood blockbuster. Cr Ireland said 2014 entrants will also have the opportunity to purchase a copy of all films entered in their category for $15. “This cost includes DVD purchase, printing/burning and postage.” For further details on the competitions terms and conditions and categories please visit the website at www.ipswich.qld.gov.au
THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging all taxpayers with offshore assets to declare their interests, ahead of a global investigation on international tax havens. The ATO’s offshore voluntary disclosure initiative, ‘Project DO IT: disclose offshore income today’, provides a last chance opportunity for those who haven’t declared their overseas assets and income to come back into the system before December 2014. “Now is the time for individuals with offshore income to get their affairs in order and avoid steep penalties and the risk of criminal prosecution for tax avoidance,” said Commissioner of Taxation Chris Jordan. “As governments around the world step up their data sharing and harness powerful technology to find tax cheats, the concept of the ‘tax haven’ is dying. It’s just a matter of time before you’ll be caught.” “If you’ve got international tax liabilities, act now and come forward and we’ll bring you back into the system with a heavily reduced penalty. If you
don’t declare your interests, you’ll be caught and penalised,” Mr Jordan said. “There’s also the future benefits we’ll achieve by bringing these assets and income back into the Australian tax system,” Mr Jordan said. Under Project DO IT, people disclosing their offshore assets will generally only be assessed for the last four years, be liable for a maximum shortfall penalty of just 10% and full shortfall interest charges, and will not be investigated by the ATO or referred for criminal investigation on the basis of their disclosures. Taxpayers can contact the ATO anonymously on 13 28 61 to find out whether they are eligible for the incentives to voluntarily disclose their offshore assets. If you do not speak English well and want to speak to a tax officer, phone the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 13 14 50 for help with your call. More information is available at ato.gov.au/projectdoit. For general tax and super information in a language other than English, visit ato.gov.au/otherlanguages

Employing family: Business, not personal FAMILY-owned businesses are theoretically ideal because family members form a grounded and loyal foundation for the company and family members will often exhibit more dedication to their common goals. Having a certain level of intimacy among the owners of a business can help bring about familiarity with the company providing a built-in support system that should ensure teamwork and solidarity. However, there are some important ground rules you need to follow. You have probably heard the phrase, “It’s not personal, it’s business.” Well, in a family business, it is always personal. Separating your emotions from the business is not an easy task, especially if you are directly managing a family member. Therefore it is important to set some ground rules at the very beginning. We need to agree on guidelines, and be specific with every aspect of their employment, exactly as you would with any other employee. Provide a job description and procedures manual for their position, and always pay them the correct salary for their position and have an employment agreement outlining things like, dispute resolution, allocating holiday time and pay. In other words treat them equally with other employees. Letting emotions interfere with your business, can make you appear weak to your employees and customers, and severely affect your ability to make sound business decisions. On the other hand, if you are insensitive, you may appear cold and unapproachable. Lack of sensitivity with family employees can also cause problems at home if you are not careful. You will need to determine the right balance of emotion needed, based on the dynamics of your business environment. There are two main reasons non-family employees will leave: limited growth opportunities and family conflict. Most employees want to advance within a company. Unfortunately, in most family businesses there are often limited opportunities for advancement, because family employees occupy all leadership positions within the company. Without opportunity to advance or take on a leadership role, many talented and ambitious employees will move on. Another problem is that non-family employees will leave because they feel as if they are always in the middle when a family feud breaks out. As a business owner you need to realise that every business needs a good mix of people to help you grow. Non-family employees add balance to the organisation because they have an ability to view the business from an unemotional position. If given the opportunity, they can offer valuable input on how to make the company better. Failing to recognize the positive impact non-family employees have on a family business is a huge mistake. Stop Addiction before it starts! Fundraising dinner auction for Masjid complex NOWADAYS, there are numerous ways to battle psychological and physical health issues. Whether it is cancer, depression, addiction or a combination of mental and physical distress, science has provided a variety of paths to pursue towards a healthy and balanced life. However, some illnesses never go away and in fact, the more they are treated or fought against, the stronger they attack. One of these is the psychological illness of addiction. We have a fair knowledge of what addiction does to society and often relate it to drugs or alcohol. But addiction is the deep neurological attachment to any substance or action that despite its adverse result, one still clings to it. In today’s modern world addiction is prevailing in the form of drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, food, sex, etc. So, where are these addictions rooted? How can we stop these deep attachments before becoming addicted? Is there a way to prevent addition before it begins? Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) explains how 80% of our problems and illnesses are rooted in the spiritual realm. That is why, despite our intellectual and scientific efforts, we are unable to cure such issues. Whether a particular difficulty has a spiritual root cause can be known for sure only through the medium of a highly activated sixth sense developed through regular, consistent spiritual practice. Due to ignorance about the existence of the spiritual dimension and its role in the obstacles we face in our lives, one is unable to fully overcome the difficulties. A practical remedy for preventing and treating addictions is through a 3 step spiritual healing program as given below. Step 1: Often times, ancestors, who have not been fulfilled while in their earthly lives and still have desires and attachments, can come in contact with their offspring on the Earth plane and satisfy themselves through their descendants. This may cause some people to suddenly develop overeating, smoking and other habits or feel the need to gamble or have sexual relations with random partners. The concept that our deceased ancestors can cause trouble in our lives is very alien to us. However, people from various cultures and religions have experienced an immense improvement in their lives by repeating the name of ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’. God carries out His mission in the Universe through the three major principles of Creation, Sustenance and Destruction. Lord Datta’s ability is derived through a combination of these three major principles of God. Thus the protective chant of ‘Sree Gurudev Datta’ represents the Name of Lord Datta, an aspect of God that alleviates distress caused due to the subtle bodies of ancestors. Due to their unfulfilled desires or lack of spiritual practice, they are stuck in a certain plane of existence. By mentally chanting ‘Shree Gurudev Datta’ for about 1-2 hours on a daily basis, it would help their soul to gain the momentum and uplift them to a higher and spiritually better plane. Step 2: Aside from the ancestors, negative
energies also affect people and cause distress to them in various ways. The primary weapon used by negative energies is black energy which is a type of energy capable of manipulating any process on the Earth plane. The extent of this manipulation depends on the strength of the attacking negative energy. The protective chant of ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ represents Lord Krushna, an aspect of God that provides protection against negative energies. This chant helps reduce the negative thoughts related to addiction and it also decreases and eventually destroys the related desires. Step 3 - Salt Water Remedy:The third step to fight or prevent addiction is to use salt water remedy to alleviate thoughts, pains and desires related to the addiction from the person’s mind, body and intellect. Ghosts transmit their black energy to the people that they target / attack and create large stores of it in their bodies. It is difficult to get rid of this black energy except through spiritual practice and spiritual healing like the salt water remedy. The salt water remedy is a simple but powerful spiritual remedy to counteract the harmful unseen black energy and drain it out of our system. By doing so, we do not waste our spiritual practice in counteracting black energy. Instead it can be used to bring about our spiritual growth. Not only for addictions, but salt water treatment can be done when one experiences symptoms such as: lethargy, inability to think, excessive or negative thoughts, anger or any other extreme emotion, stress, any form of physical illness etc. Visit www.ssrf.org to learn more about this treatment. When we are experiencing any one of the above symptoms, we are in a weakened state physically, emotionally or spiritually. The ghosts attack us in this weakened state and infuse more black energy and play up the symptoms to an even greater extent. These three steps can be used daily to both prevent and cure addictions caused by negative energies and ancestors. It is important to note that parents play an important role in a child’s life to nurture them spiritually and protect them from all types of addictions. These 3 steps work for all regardless of age or whether dealing with an addiction or not. By being informed and proactive, people can become less vulnerable and more aware of the subtle world by welcoming spirituality in their daily lives. Practicing spirituality can trigger spiritual awareness, growth and protection from addictions and all other negative energy attacks. Do try it for yourself. After all, prevention is better than cure!

Community joins hands to Develop Cultural Precinct By Kartik Menon MEMBERS of the Gold Coast Hindu Community have banded together and organised a whole suite of initiatives to support the spiritual and cultural education of young people in Southeast Queensland. In line with the ancient proverb which goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”, several Gold Coast Hindus from a diverse range of backgrounds and different walks of life have come together to facilitate programs which would contribute to building stronger and more holistic young people in the community. Operating under the umbrella of the oneyear young ‘Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association’, community leaders and members have been working together tirelessly
to develop a Hindu Cultural Precinct in Gold Coast City. “The multi-million dollar precinct would act as a hub for the plethora of events and activities which are currently run by the community. In particular, it would give our young people a much needed sense of space, to learn, engage and practice their faith and culture”, said Mr Indrajit Siva, Secretary of the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association. Mr Indrajit also said that the Gold Coast City Council has now formally provided consent for the proposed architectural design of the precinct. “It will be an iconic structure located in Arundel, within close proximity to Griffith University and the new Gold Coast University Hospital,” he said. Muthukkumarsamy said, “We always keep our young people in mind in whichever project we embark on. Engaging our young is a deliberate strategy and a need which has been identified by many members of our community – especially given the context that many of us are from minority groups and from immigrant backgrounds.” One of the strongest, ongoing community engagement activities of the association is its monthly bhajans, which are held in Helensvale Community Centre on the third Friday evening of every month. “What is different about our group and the way we run our bhajans is that we do not have a spiritual leader. Instead, we give the power to our children. Every child in our community is given an opportunity to sing and we encourage younger members of our community to play an active role in leading and coordinating the bhajans. After all, they are our future and I think it is critical that we involve and empower them”, said Dr Muthukkumarsamy. The Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association is keen to widen its level of engagement and outreach. Those interested in attending the bhajans are welcome to
attend the next sessions on the Fridays of April 18th and May 16th at 7pm in Helensvale Community Centre (31 Discovery Drive, Helensvale). “There is always a great vibe in the bhajans. The community is very friendly and welcoming and we would love to see new faces. It does not matter what your country of origin or your native language is, we are here to cater to everyone!” said Subramaniam Barataraj, the association’s Director of Religious Affairs. The First Caliph of Islam (Hazrat Abu Bakr Sidique R.A) By Imam Muhammad Aslam
ALL praise is due to Allah Taala the sustainer and the cherisher of the world and blessings and salutations upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaho Alahi Wasallam) who is the final Messenger of Allah Taala and mercy to entire mankind. Sahabah mean companion of the prophet Muhammad Salllaahu Alaihi Wassalam and the ones that saw him, they have a great personality who did the Ziyaara of Prophet S.A.W and learnt most from him. Allah Swt describes the status of Sahaaba in the Holy Quran and Allah Swt is pleased with them and the Sahaabah are pleased with Allah Swt. The beloved prophet S.A.W said, follow my sunnat and my sahaaba sunnah and you will never be misguided. Early Life “No one has been a better companion to me than Abu Bakr,” said the holy Prophet in his last sermon. A great reward indeed! Abu Bakr had earned it. All his life he stood by the side of the Prophet. He did not care for his life. He did not care for his riches. He did not care for what others said about him. His only ambition was to serve the Prophet more than anyone else. The cost did not matter. The ambition was fulfilled. And Abu Bakr got his reward in full. The Messenger of Allah was well pleased with him. He gave him the first place among the Companions. Abu Bakr was to be the first man to fill the place of the Prophet. He was also to lie in eternal rest by the prophet’s side. Abu Bakr was two years younger than the Prophet. His parents named him Abdul Kaaba, which means the servant of the Kaaba. When he became a Muslim, the Prophet changed his pagan name to Abdullah. However, in early youth he had adopted the surname of Abu Bakr. He had come to be known by this name among people. Even to this day, the world generally knows him as Abu Bakr. The name of Abu Bakr’s father was Uthman, but he was known as Abu Qahafa. Salma was Abu Bakr’s mother. She was also known as Umm-ul-Khair. Abu Bakr belonged to a branch of the Quraish. From early years, Abu Bakr was known for good and upright nature. He was honest and truthful. He came of a noble family. These things won him respect among the people. His goodness also won him the friendship of young Muhammad (Peace be Upon him). The two became fast friends in early boyhood. The friendship was to prove lifelong and history-making. When he grew up, Abu Bakr became a rich merchant. But he used to be very kind-hearted. When he saw someone in trouble, his heart melted. He did his best to help him. If his money could remove suffering, he did not care home much he had to spend. Once he gave away thirty-five dirhams out of his total fortune of forty thousand. He was so honest in his dealings that people kept their money with him. Above all, Abu Bakr had a sincere heart and a firm will. Nothing could stop him from doing what he thought was the right thing to do. These great qualities were soon to serve the noblest cause known to the world. Abu Bakr was to become the strongest supporter of the Redeemer of mankind. He was to become the first among the Companions. He was to make Arabia and thereby the world safe for Islam after the Prophet has passed away. Service to the Prophet First among Men Abu Bakr was always very close to the holy Prophet. He knew him better than any other man. He knew how honest and upright his friend had always been. So he was the first among men to believe in the Prophet’s mission. He was the first adult male to accept Islam. After the first revelation, the holy Prophet told him what had happened at Mount Hira. He told him that Allah had made him His Messenger. Abu Bakr did not stop to think. He at once became a Muslim. Once the holy Prophet himself remarked, “I called people to Islam. Everybody thought over it, at least for a while. But this was not the case with Abu Bakr. The moment I put Islam before him, he accepted it without any hesitation.” Abu Bakr did more than that. As soon as he became a Muslim, he began to preach Islam to others. He had many friends. The friends knew that Abu Bakr was sincere and truthful. They knew he would never support a wrong cause. He called them to Islam and they became Muslims. Among them were men like Uthman, Zubair, Talha, Abdur Rahman bin Auf and Saad bin Waqqas. These men later became the pillars of Islam. The holy Prophet called at Abu Bakr’s house every day. The two sad down and thought out ways of spreading Islam. Together they went to people and places and delivered the message of Allah. Wherever the holy Prophet went, Abu Bakr went with him. The Title of “Siddiq” In the tenth year of his mission, the holy Prophet had the Miraj of Ascension. One night the angel Gabriel came with the word that Allah the Almighty wanted the holy Prophet to come all the way up to the highest heaven. The holy Prophet undertook the journey. In the morning, after the ascension had taken place, the holy Prophet talked to people about the Miraj. This drew the jeers of his enemies. “Look!” the howled out, “what nonsense he talks! Surely, now his followers too will laugh at him. Who is going to believe in such a midsummer night dream?” The talk was going on when Abu Bakr came up. “Do you know, Abu Bakr, what news your friend has for you in the morning?” said one of the mean. “He says he was on the highest heaven last night, having a talk with Allah, the Almighty. Would you believe it?” “I would believe anything that the Messenger of Allah says,” replied Abu Bakr. When the holy Prophet learnt of this, he at once said, “Abu Bakr is the `Siddiq’.” `Siddiq’ is a person so sincere of heart that doubts never mar his love. Abu Bakr earned this title because of his faith was too strong to be shaken by anything. Migration to Medina When the Meccans were intent on putting out, once and for all, the light of Islam, Allah commanded the holy Prophet to move to Medina. In the burning heat of the midday sun, there was a knock at Abu Bakr’s

door. He ran to the door and found the Messenger of Allah standing outside. “I must leave for Medina tonight,” said he “Will I also have the honour of going with you?” asked Abu Bakr eagerly. “Of course,” came the reply. “Set about getting things ready.” Abu Bakr was beside himself with joy. “I have been looking forward to this day for months,” he exclaimed. “I have specifically kept two camels to carry us to Medina.” It was Abu Bakr who made all the arrangements for the historic journey. for three days he and the Prophet lay hidden in the Thaur cave. Abu Bakr’s slave tended the flocks of goats near the cave all day and supplied them fresh milk for food. His son, Abdullah, brought news about what the Meccans were doing. The Meccans were searching for the holy Prophet like mad hounds. Once they came right to the mouth of the cave. Abu Bakr grew pale with fright. He feared, not for himself, but for the Prophet. However, the holy Prophet remained perfectly calm. “Do not fear,” he said to Abu Bakr, “certainly Allah is with us.” Of all the companions, Abu Bakr had the honour of being with the Prophet during the most critical days of his life. Abu Bakr knew full well what this honour meant. And he did full justice to the trust put in him. Hazrat Abu Bakr-Ameer e Haj The first Hajj under Islam fell in the ninth year of Hijra. The holy Prophet was too busy at Medina to lead the Hajj himself. So he sent Abu Bakr as his agent. He was to lead the Hajj in place of the Prophet. Ali was also sent with Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr read the Khutba (Sermon) of Hajj Ever since he came to Medina, the holy Prophet himself led prayers in the Prophet’s Mosque. It was an unusually high office which the Messenger of Allah himself filled. During his last illness, the holy Prophet could no longer lead prayers. He grew too weak to go to the mosque. He had to appoint someone to act in his place. This honour also fell to the lot of Abu Bakr. Aisha, who was Abu Bakr’s daughter and a wife of the holy Prophet, thought that the burden was too much for her tender-hearted father. She pleaded with the holy Prophet to excuse here father from this duty. But the holy Prophet did not change his mind. Thus in the lifetime of the holy Prophet Abu Bakr came to fill the highest office under Islam. One day Abu Bakr was away on some business and Omar led the prayer in his absence. “This is not Abu Bakr’s voice,” remarked the ailing Messenger of Allah. “No one but he should lead prayers. He is the fittest person for this high office.” On the last day of his life, the condition of the holy Prophet became suddenly better for a while. It was early morning. Abu Bakr was leading the prayer in the mosque. The holy Prophet lifted the curtain of his door and fixed his gaze on the worshippers. They were busy in prayer under Abu Bakr’s leadership. A smile lite up on the pale face of the holy Prophet. He let go of the curtain, as his weak hand could no longer hold it. But he was happy at the thought that he had chosen the best man to fill his place. Abu Bakr Elected Caliph The holy Prophet occupied a unique place among his people. He was everything to them. From warring ignorant pagans, he had made them a nation of peaceful, God-fearing people. They were “dead” as the Quran puts it and the holy Prophet had “raised them to life.” So they rightly came to look upon him as the giver of life. Life without him seemed to be an empty thing. The news of the Prophet’s death came as a stunning shock to everyone. How could it be? He had been ill for some days, they all knew. But death was unbelievable. That simply could not be. A huge crowd gathered in the mosque. No one knew what to do. There was utter confusion. Omar was so overcome with emotion that he drew his sword and declared, “If anyone says that the Messenger of Allah is dead. I will cut off his head!” Things were in this state when Abu Bakr entered the mosque. Finding the holy Prophet better that morning, he had gone a few miles outside of Medina, earlier in the day, but had come back on hearing the sad news. He took his stand in a corner of the courtyard and called out to the people. All eyes were turned towards him. Then he began his famous address: “O people! If anyone among you worshipped Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad has passed away. But those who worship Allah, let him know that He lives and will never die. Let all of us recall the words of the Qur’an. It says, `Muhammad is only a Messenger of Allah There have been Messengers before him. What then, will you turn back from Islam, if he dies or is killed?” These words of Abu Bakr worked magic. In no time the confusion was gone. The words of the Qur’an swept of all doubts from people’s minds. They got ready to face facts. Election of Abu Bakr The first problem before the people was the election of a new leader. There had to be a head of the State of things could not work. The need was too urgent to allow delay. Delay might have meant disorder and the undoing of all that the Messenger of Allah had done. The prophet of Allah had died but the head of the state had to live on. The two big groups among Muslims were the Muhajirin (refugees from Mecca) and the Ansar (helpers or the people of Medina). The Ansar gathered together at Thaqifa Bani Saida, their meeting place, near the house of Saad bin Abada. The talk naturally centered around the election of a Caliph. Saad, the Ansar leader, stood up and said that the Caliph must be from among them. Many voices seconded him. One man, however, stood up and said, “But how about the Muhajirin? They have perhaps a better claim.” “Then let there be two caliphs,” suggested someone, “one from among the Ansar and the other from among the Muhajirin.” Someone told Abu Bakr what was going on at this gathering. He saw the need to act quickly or confusion might set in again. So taking with him a part of Muhajirin he went to Thaqif Bani Saida. He addressed the gathering and said, “Both the Muhajirin and the Ansar have done great services to Islam. But the former were the first to accept Islam. They were always very close to the Messenger of Allah. So, O Ansar, let
the Caliph be from among them.” To this a man from the Khazraj tribe replied, “If you don’t want a Caliph from among us, let there be two Caliphs, one an Ansari and the other a Muhajif.” “That won’t work,” said Abu Obaida bin Jarrah. “O Ansar, you are the people who made Islam strong now, don’t do anything that may undo your work.” Hearing this, another man said, “O Ansar, if we did anything for Islam, we did it to please Allah and His Apostle. We did not thereby oblige anybody. This should not be made a plea to win office. Listen, the holy Prophet belonged to the Quraish tribe. The Quraish have a greater right to fill his place. By Allah, I do not think it right to quarrel with them over this matter. Fear Allah, and do not oppose them.” This speech of a man from among them silenced the Ansar. They agreed to have a Muhajif as the Caliph. So Abu Bakr said, “Friends, I think either Omar or AbuObaida should be the Caliph. Choose one of these two gentlemen.” Hearing this both Omar and Abu Obaida jumped to their feet, and exclaimed, “O Siddiq, how can that be? How can anyone else fill this office as long as you are among us? You are the top man among the Muhajirin. You were the companion of the holy Prophet in the Thaur Cave. You led prayers in his place, during his last illness. Prayer is the foremost thing in Islam. With all these qualifications, you are the fittest person to be the successor of the holy Prophet. Hold out your hand that we many pledge loyalty to you.” But Abu Bakr did not stretch out his hand. Omar saw that delay might lead to the reopening of the whole question. That could easily create difficulties. So he himself took Abu Bakr’s hand and pledged loyalty to him. Others followed his example. Men from all sides rushed to pledge loyalty to the successor of the Prophet. Abu Bakr became Caliph by the general consent of the people. The First Address On the following day, Abu Bakr went to the Prophet’s mosque Here people took the general oath of loyalty. When this was over, Abu Bakr mounted the pulpit as the Caliph of Islam. Then he spoke to the gathering as follows: “O people, I have been elected your leader, although I am not better than anyone from among you. If I do any good, give me your support. If I go wrong, set me right. Listen, truth is honesty and untruth is dishonesty. The weak among you are powerful in my eyes, as long as I do not get them their due, Allah willing. The powerful among you are weak in my eyes, as long as I do not take away from them what is due to others, Allah willing.” “Listen, if people give up striving for the cause of Allah, Allah sends down disgrace on them. If a people become evil doers, Allah sends down calamities on them.” “Listen, you must obey me as long as I obey Allah and His Messenger. If I disobey Allah and His Messenger, you are free to disobey me.” Such was the Magna Carta granted by the first Caliph of Islam to his people, on the first day of his rule, without their asking. Abu Bakr showed by his example that in Islam government means government of the people, by the people and for the people. Hazrat Ali and some of his relatives did not pledge loyalty to Abu Bakr in the beginning but then they did later. That was because of a difference of opinion with the Caliph. The holy Prophet had some land at Medina and Khaibar. His daughter, Fatima, and his uncle, Abbas, laid claim to this land. But Abu Bakr set aside the claim, in the light of what the holy Prophet himself had said. “We Prophets cannot be inherited,” was his saying; “whatever we leave behind is public property.” Hazrat Fatima thought she was perfectly right in her claim. This created a little bitterness in her mind, and the mind of her husband, Ali. The hypocrites were quick to add to the misunderstanding. But Abu Bakr and Ali were equally unselfish. During Fatima’s illness, Abu Bakr himself went to see her and cleared away the misunderstanding. After her death, Ali went to Abu Bakr and said, “O Siddiq, we admit your superiority. We do not envy the position Allah has given you. But as relatives of the holy Prophet, we thought Caliphate to be our right. You had taken away this right of ours.” These words brought tears in Abu Bakr’s eyes and he said, “By Allah, the relatives of the Prophet are dearer to me than my own relatives.” The assurance satisfied Ali. He went to the mosque and publicly took the pledge of loyalty. Abu Bakr’s Last Illness On the 7th of Jamadi-ul-Akhir, 13 A.H., Abu Bakr was taken ill. He had sever fever. Everything was done to bring down the fever, but all in vain. It became clear to the aged Caliph that his end was come. Even in these last days, the thought that troubled Abu Bakr was the future of Islam. He wanted to make sure that nothing would go wrong with the affairs of Muslims, after he was no more. He had to spend every ounce of his energy to put down the violent storms of unrest that broke loose after the Prophet’s death. He did not want this to happen after his own death. Welfare of Muslims had always been the first care of Abu Bakr. He would allow nothing that made Islam weak. The thing he feared most was division among Muslims. He remembered what had happened after the death of the Holy Prophet. He wanted to make sure that no differences should divide Muslims after he was no more. Unity was the secret strength. Unity must be had at any price. As his sickness grew, Abu Bakr gave more and more thought to the matter. Who should be the Caliph after him? Should he himself name the best man? Or should he leave the matter to the people? In the latter case, quarrels might arise. These would certainly shake the very foundations of Islam. IT was too great a risk. Abu Bakr was not willing to take that risk. After careful thought, he chose to nominate Omar. He put his proposal before the leading Companions. Most of them liked the proposal. But someone said, “Omar is no doubt the best man, but he is rather too strict.” To this Abu Bakr replied, “As soon as the burden of Caliphate falls on his shoulders, he will become more mild.” When all Companions agreed, Abu Bakr called Othman. He dictated to him Omar’s nomination. It

was read out to the people. It said: “This is the will of Abu Bakr, the Caliph of the Holy Prophet. He is making the will when he is about to leave for the next world. This is the time when even a non-believer begins to believe and even a sinner begins to trust in Allah. I appoint Omar bin Khattab as your ruler. In appointing him, I have kept your welfare fully in mind. I hope he will be truthful and just. But if he leaves his path and becomes unjust, I know nothing about the unseen, I have only the well-being of Muslims at heart. Everybody is responsible for what he does.” The will was read out to the people. After this Abu Bakr went to the top of his house, supported by two men. Addressing the people he said: “My brethren infaith, I have not appointed any of my own brothers and relatives as your Caliph. I have appointed a man who is the fittest person among you. Do you approve of him?” “Of course we do,” went up a shout from hundreds of men. Next he called Omar to his bedside and spoke to him thus: “Omar! I have nominated you my successor. My parting advice is that you fear Allah and work for the well-being of the Muslims. Remember, Omar, the duties you own to Allah are to be discharged at the proper time. Some of these are to be discharged at night and some during the day time. First things must come first. On the Day of Judgment only those will come out successful whose good deeds are weighty. Those whose evil deeds out-weigh the good deeds, will have a terrible time. For success and salvation, you have to make the Qur’an and the truth your guides. You know, Omar, that the verses of the Qur’an speak of good reward and punishment side by side. This is to put the fear of Allah in the believer’s heart and to make him pray for forgiveness. Omar, when you read in the Qur’an about the inmate of fire, pray to Allah not to make you one of them. But when you read about the dwellers of Paradise, pray for being one of them Omar, if you follow the path I have chalked out for you, you will find me by your side.” When Omar had left the dying Caliph raised his hands in prayer and said: “Lord! I have taken this step in the best interest of the Muslims. I feared disunion among them, so I took this step, the consequences of which are best known to You. After careful thought I have appointed a man who is the sincerity and the most energetic worker for the well-being of the people. I am at death’s door now, so help the Muslims, Lord after I am no more. They are Your servants. Their future is in Your hands. Lord, keep their rules on the right path. Make Omar one of the noblest Caliphs and help the Muslims help him.” Abu Bakr Passes Away After an illness of two weeks, Abu Bakr passed away. He was sixty-three at the time. He was buried by the side of the Holy Prophet. Before his death he said, “Do not use new cloth to cover my dead body. The sheet of cloth I have on will do for me. Wash it clean.” “But this is too old and worn, father,” said his daughter Aisha. “This old and worn sheet will do for me,” he replied. This parting wish was acted upon. The second wish of the dying Caliphs was, “Sell my land and pay back in the public treasury all the money I got as my salary.” This was also done. Before he became the Caliph, Abu Bakr was a well-to-day merchant. The affairs of the Caliphate left him no time to look after his own business. The matter was put before the Companions. They allowed the Caliph a salary of six thousand dirhams a year. All this money was paid back to the Bait-ul-Mal (the Public Treasury) after the Caliph’s death. Thus Abu Bakr, the first Caliph, left behind a noble example of selfless service. He lived and worked for Islam to the last breath. And for his tireless labors, he sought no worldly reward. Two Years of Abu Bakr’s Calpihate Abu Bakr was as sincere as he was firm in faith. He lived up to every word of what he said at the beginning of his Caliphate. He was never anything but the faithful agent of Allah and His Apostle, and the humblest servant of his people. It was this fact which won him the deepest love and respect for all classes of his people. The result was that Islam took an unshakable hold on the country of its birth. Soon it gathered enough strength to overlap its boundaries. It struck at the two most feared powers of the time. And lo! it was successful. Abu Bakr had put Islam on the road to worldwide expansion. Islam means total submission to the will of Allah. It means that utter absence of all selfishness. The Holy Prophet showed by his example how that goal could be reached. He showed how the power of the State should not be used for private ends but for the public good. Abu Bakr was the first among his followers to live up to the Prophet’s example. He got no personal gain out of the Caliphate. He spent every minute of the last two years of life in the service of his people, but got not a penny as wages. Abu Bakr had several sons and many near relatives. For public offices, he did not choose anyone of them. He rather chose other people who were more fit for public service. He had to nominate his own successor to prevent quarrels. But his choice fell on none of his own relatives. His choice was rather the man whom he honestly believed to be the best among the Companions. All the same, he did not force his choice on people. He put his proposal before the Companions. When they had agreed to it, he put it before the people. In short, Abu Bakr showed the world what government of the people, for the people, and by the people really meant. Neither the East nor the West had ever known such a form of government before. The mighty empires of Iran and Byzantium were based upon naked force. In short Abu Bakr kept going the great work of the Prophet. For that he had to fight hard. He fought with a will and with a faith that amazed everyone. Islam is forever grateful to him for the great services he rendered to it. May Allah S.W.T give us Hidayat to respect Sahabatul- Qiraan.
Ameen.

Just ask Him with a sincere and humble heart to reveal the True knowledge to you today; surely you will encounter your creator. Respond by email: navig8grace@gmail.com
The relationship between a Parent and a Child By Lata Patney Spiritual Yoga Instructor HOW parents think of their children influences how their personalities develop. Whatever a parent wants a child to do, first they have to do it themselves. Then there is less chance of the child feeling fearful. A child is a free Soul, and often it is parents who create fear, or trust in a child. Suppose a child is walking and hits themselves on a table. The parent may say the table is bad, beat the table. However, what should be said is that the child should be aware of their surroundings, look for the table and walk carefully. This way parents can change the child’s attitude towards life. Always Thought, Word and Action should be the same and always create positive thoughts, and this then becomes a child’s destiny. Words are as good as thoughts. Sometimes parents think negatively and speak positively. For example if a child is going to school and the parent thinks they could fall or be frightened, so they say don’t fall, don’t be frightened, and take care. This can create conflict. So first have a positive relationship with yourself then with everyone else, and your relationships will be good. Teach yourself that happiness is within and it’s your property, use it as much as you want and give it to others. If you do so, your happiness will increase. One child may be an introvert, and doesn’t like to talk much but instead believes in doing things, while another child may be an extrovert, who talks a lot. The important thing is that parents don’t try to change them. These are two different Souls. Everyone has positive and negative attributes. Motivate them, and don’t compare them, because if children are compared this will de-motivate them. If parents motive children then the relationship between the child and the parent becomes very beautiful and
strong. In today’s world children have more information than their parents did, at the same age, so parents often have to adjust to children. Friends are those who don’t have to pretend and with whom we can be ourselves. I don’t have to impress someone if they are my friend. If children hide something from their parents either it is because they are wrong or are scared because they may believe that their parents don’t understand them. Children should not do anything that they have to hide from their parents. A child should trust their parents. Parents should also involve their children in everything so that they become responsible. If the parentchild relationship is very strong the child will develop well. Parents can be a friend to their child from the beginning, and this will result in a trusting relationship. A child is an individual, who has both strengths and weaknesses. Parents need to accept the child as he/she is then the child develops trust in the parents. Children need to be corrected without anger so the relationship will be positive and involve acceptance and unconditional love. If a child is sure their parents love them the way they are then they can’t go wrong. Sometimes verbally parents say they trust the child but in their thoughts they worry and then negative energy flows. If we have trust then positive energy really works. It is sad we tell others everything but tend to hide from our very own people. Children are a reflection of their parents. They are born emotionally weak because when a woman is carrying she is stressed, and this is transferred into the child, it is the young mind. A woman should be kept happy all the time when she is pregnant, so she delivers a child with a happy mind and a strong body. So what you think becomes your destiny. It is in your hands to make your destiny.
Doctor awarded prestigious Fulbright Scholarship A ROYAL Brisbane and Women's Hospital doctor was recently awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship at a ceremony at Brisbane City Hall. Dr Vinay Rane (pictured) was one of 31 recipients across Australia and joins the likes of Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton and 43 Nobel Prize winners who have also been awarded Fulbright Scholarships in the past. Dr Rane, who is an obstetrician in training, forensic physician and lawyer, will use the scholarship to help reduce illness and death in mothers and babies in cultural minority groups within Australia through collaboration, and sharing existing knowledge with the United States. "Around 1,500 women die during childbirth each day around the globe and almost all of these deaths are preventable with the provision of comprehensive obstetric care," Dr Rane said. "Although Australia enjoys a very low overall perinatal mortality rate, there are pockets of the population that are drastical-
ly over-represented in this statistic and this is especially true of new migrants and asylum seekers. "The United States has had considerable success in increasing access to healthcare for disadvantaged populations through the provision of culturally sensitive health delivery models. "By integrating interventions learned from the US, the death rate of mothers and babies may be reduced in Australia," he said. Dr Rane said delivering babies was the best job in the world and it was the ultimate privilege to be able to share in what is the most significant day in most parents' lives. The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 as an initiative of US Senator J William Fulbright, who believed that cultural and educational exchange could play an important role in building a lasting world peace. More than 325,000 people have become part of this prestigious, worldwide alumni, with the program currently operating between the US and 155 other nations.

April no falls.... DID you know more than 30 per cent of people over the age of 65 will suffer a fall at least once a year? This is the message being shared this month during April No Falls. Queensland Health's Hospital and Health Services across the state will be promoting falls prevention this month with a focus on the risks faced by people living with dementia. Co-Clinical Chair of the Queensland Health Statewide Dementia Clinical Network Associate Professor Edward Strivens said unfortunately more than one quarter of all hospitalisations for people with dementia were due to falls. "‘The good news is that there are steps families can take to decrease the chance of a family member with dementia falling," he said.

"Older people living with dementia are at twice the risk of falling. "Sadly, less than 50 per cent of people who are injured in a fall and go to hospital never go home again." Chairperson of the Statewide Falls Injury Prevention Collaborative Association Professor Paul Varghese said prevention was important for everyone. "Falls prevention becomes paramount as we age," he said. "For those who suffer from dementia it is vital that simple changes are made in and around the home," he said. "Making simple home modifications can be a big help in fact, the installation of grab rails has been shown to decrease the fall rate by 30 per cent. much faster. It means another property wouldn’t necessarily be limited to a purchase price of $500,000 (using $100,000 as a 20 per cent deposit). Yep this truly is a girl’s best friend, only this time it’s good debt! Unlike those shoes at Myer Brisbane seems to be picking up the pace pretty quickly and I don’t see the point saving for another 12 months when the market might gain, say, four or five per cent over the next year. Even with that conservative estimate and a property priced at $500,000, that would be an equity gain of $25,000 in one year. You can soon figure out LMI might help you from missing out and it’s all about opportunity cost – getting in when the market is rising, sitting tight when it stabilises.

band and I had to pay a pretty big LMI fee – I think it was about $15,000. But this allowed us to buy a property at $621,500, which had a bank valuation of $700,000 at the time. So by forking out the extra $15,000 and bringing the purchase price up to $637,500, we instantly made about $65,000 in equity. At the moment, we can refinance and we’ll have about $100,000 to use as a deposit (is that not the most exciting thing when you have money to spend! It’s a bit like being given a credit card and told you can go shopping at Myer.) Once again, I’m predicting we can use this as a 10 per cent deposit on something and pay LMI again. See what I mean – it just allows you to buy better property, and

THERE are three words that I just love to hear. One starts with ‘I’ and another with ‘L’. But it’s not ‘I love you’. Lenders’ mortgage insurance. They’re the three little words that can dramatically get you started in investing and help you on your way to building a portfolio, especially in a hot market. It’s not complicated. But unlike Cheryl Cole and Will.i.am’s ‘Three words’ song, lenders’ mortgage insurance does seem to be underrated. That’s because most people prefer to save a 20 per cent deposit before they buy a property, as it means they won’t have to pay lenders’ mortgage insurance, otherwise known as LMI. LMI is basically an extra payment you have to pay to the bank if your deposit is less than 20 per cent, in case you default on the loan. But it doesn’t actually protect you, it’s merely insurance to protect the bank. So you’re still up the creek without a paddle, so to speak, if you do happen to
default and can’t pay your loan. Nevertheless, LMI can be seen as an unnecessary cost and a waste of money for some homebuyers and investors. I’ve never been a good saver but I’ve always been pretty good with bills and making repayments on time. So I see LMI as a fabulous opportunity to buy in a market sooner rather than later. Around Australia, many markets are now rising – often rising faster than you can save. So for example, it might take 10 months to save a $30,000 deposit but when property booms, values can easily rise by that much in the same period of time. That’s why I personally feel it’s always better to buy as soon as you can and pay LMI when you have to. I’m no accountant or financial expert but, like all API readers, I love property and the benefits it provides. Another beautiful thing about LMI is that you can actually claim this as a tax deduction and with the end of the financial year just around the corner, you wouldn’t have to wait for too long to claim it back. Awesome! LMI has also been great in my own investing journey. A couple of years ago my hus-

Astrology Aries - March 21 - April 20 The month of April looks set to bring a mixed bag of fortunes for you, predicts Ganesha. The most important thing that businessmen need to be careful about now is business partnerships. Avoid getting into any new partnerships till the end of this month, says Ganesha. Professionals will be full of zest and energy, finishing most of their ongoing tasks with ease. Make the best use of this favourable phase to finish off even those tasks, which may have been pending or getting delayed since long. On the financial front, you are likely to be comfortable, but Ganesha advises you not to spend recklessly, and avoid unnecessary expenses. The time is not suitable for purchasing new property or a vehicle, so if you have been contemplating buying one, postpone it your decision for sometime. Things may not exactly be hunky-dory on the domestic front, so handle relationships with care. Taurus - April 21 - May 22 Professionals may find the going a bit tough this month, foresees Ganesha. It is quite possible that the hurdles you are facing in your present job make you feel fed up, and you may start hunting for another job. If you do get a better opportunity, take it, but only after carefully considering the pros and cons, especially by keeping your longterm goals in mind. You have been working hard, and you may be craving a break, which luckily there is a possibility of getting. You may become a bit image conscious, and will try to improve your looks by getting yourself an image-makeover. But, Ganesha advises you not to be too bothered about what others think about you. Instead, try to gain inner growth, which will be more appreciated by the people who matter. Finances will call for your keen attention this month, and so will the close relationships and your health matters.

www.ganeshaspeaks.com Cancer - June 22 - July 22 Although your temperamental nature will manifest itself on and off, Ganesha foretells that this month you shall be relatively calmer. You will not take your decisions in haste, but only after giving things due thought and analysis. On the business front, things look positively rosy, but if you are thinking of investing heavily in new projects, take due precautions. In fact, if you postpone major financial moves in business, you may stand to gain more. On the professional front, too, you will surely make remarkable progress, perhaps you may even get a promotion, which will catapult you into a position of authority, thereby giving you a good chance to showcase your leadership skills. However, you have to get ready for taking on more work-load. If you work hard enough, you will earn enough money for the big expenses coming in the near future. Health-wise - keep safe distance from junk food to avoid weight-gain.
Libra - September 23 - October 22 Both for businessmen as well as professionals, this month will prove to be very conducive for making progress. Expansion plans for your business will meet with success, and your turnover and profit margins will increase. Professionals will successfully complete all the tasks allotted to them, and with such precision, that your superiors will be mightily impressed, and may even start thinking in terms of giving you a hefty increment or a promotion. On the financial front, you shall be comfortable and you will have enough money to meet all your expected and unexpected expenses. In fact, you may splurge on some very expensive creature comforts both for yourself and your family members, but will soon realise that they cannot give you the inner peace that you are craving for. That, Ganesha says, will only come through meditation and seriously pursuing some spiritual practices.
Capricorn - December 23 - January 30 Ganesha foresees that you will be very comfortable in your workplace this month, and your approach to work will be very positive, which is bound to translate into success sooner or later. You will even feel comfortable working from home, if circumstances demand it, but then there may be too many distractions, which you will have to manage professionally. Businessmen may be required to function under heavy pressure to just maintain the current level of productivity, and if you wish to improve profitability, you will have to invest much more effort. Also, ensure that you don't take hasty decisions. Well, with so much going on on the work front, your family life is likely to be sidelined, which may not go down too well with your near and dear ones. Ganesha advises you to somehow try to squeeze out some quality time for them. Going on a picnic or shopping over the weekend would not be a bad idea.
Leo - July 23 - August 22 Professionals in a position of authority may find the first week of the month quite conducive for getting their work done by their subordinates, predicts Ganesha. Even for those of you in middle- and lower-positions, this will be, all in all, a good phase - you will be able to complete many tasks , which may have been getting postponed for a long time. Businessmen will be busy taking stock of various aspects of their projects. You may decide to continue with only those projects, which show real signs of progress, while you may decide to dump those projects that, though they may have been profitable in the past, may have become a dead weight now. On the romantic front, this month is going to test your patience, presenting many situations which may confuse you. You will have to sharpen your powers of discrimination, and then only judge whether a particular relationship is worth taking to the next level.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21 On the professional front, Ganesha predicts that this month is going to be very auspicious, so if you have been hunting for another job, there is a strong possibility that you will get it. Even if you have applied for a job in some foreign country, you are likely to get it. However, till the very last day in your present job, you shall be very methodical and will do your work sincerely. This does not mean there will not be any challenges, but it does mean that you will be feeling very optimistic and will be able to handle even very difficult situations with relative ease and supreme self-confidence. Things may not be so rosy on the domestic front, though, and you may find it difficult to deal with your very demanding in-laws. You will not shirk your responsibilities, and with your immediate family you will in fact strengthen your relationships.
Aquarius - January 21 - February 19 You will have to show a lot of patience this month, warns Ganesha, because there are chances that your ongoing work may get frequently delayed for reasons beyond your control. This, of course, is a temporary phase, and soon things will become smooth, so all you really need is a bit of patience. You will have sufficient reserves of energies, but you may be prone to squandering them on unnecessary activities, so Ganesha advises you to make judicious use of it. On the financial front, there is good news, that your inflow is going to rise substantially. You will be tempted to simultaneously also raise your social status, so you may go in for expensive purchases, such as a bigger house or a luxurious car. However, you would do well to avoid taking loans which may be difficult for you to repay. On the personal front, you will try your best to please your loved ones.
Gemini - May 23 - Jun 21 Sagittarius - November 22 - December 22 For much of this month, stars send good Virgo - August 23 - October 22 Ganesha This month you shall be very positive, down Pisces - February 20 - March 20 Ganesha energy your way. She was 75. Nanda was born in 1939, as the daughter of Vinayak Damodar Karnataki (Master Vinayak), who was a successful Marathi actor and director. She began her film career as a child artiste in the early 1950s and got her big break as an adult through the success of the film “Toofan Aur Diya” (1956), a brother-sister saga directed by her paternal uncle V Shantaram. The next year, she starred in several films including “Bhabhi”, “Agra Road” and “Bandi.” The veteran actress was nominated as the Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Bhabhi,” however, she didn’t win. She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in “Anchal,” which hit the screens in 1960. No one is your friend in Bollywood: Neha Sharma
Bollywood & Entertainment
NEHA Sharma, who started her career with southern films, has done a couple of Hindi movies but she still feels like an outsider in Bollywood and says “no one is your friend here”. She was seen in the films “Crook”, “Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum” and the recently released “Youngistaan”. “I don’t think I’ve found wide acceptance. I don’t even think the big banners know about me. But I am still trying to find my bearings around here,” said the 26-year-old Bihari girl. “It isn’t easy since I am very conservative at heart. Back home in Bhagalpur, we were a very non-filmy family. We didn’t know much about movies except Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. And we knew about Sanjeev Kumar because he was my mother’s favourite actor. My three siblings were all into academics. And two of them are now settled in Chicago,” she added. Neha is hoping “Youngistaan” would bring her the kind of recognition that she is working towards. “I did get my first film easily,” said the actress who debuted with director Puri Jagganath’s Telugu movie “Chirutha” in 2007. “But since then it hasn’t been an easy journey for me. Once I did a couple of Telugu films, I wanted to move to Bollywood. That’s where the struggle began. Though I
bagged ‘Crook’ with a big banner (Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt) and with a top leading man Emraan Hashmi, the film didn’t do
well.” “Though ‘Crook’ didn’t work, I think it was a good film. ‘Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum’ received a lot of flak. But it was a commercial success. That’s what counts in the film industry,” she said. Though Neha loves Mumbai, she is still wary of Bollywood. “No one is your friend here. Everyone is here to do her work. I am still searching for a meaning to this industry beyond the box office. Luckily, I got ‘Youngistaan’ just in time. I am hoping it would be a turning point for me,” she said. It wasn’t as if Neha sought a movie career. “‘Chirutha’ just fell into my lap. Like thousands of other small town girls I was just another aspirant from Bhagalpur hoping to make something out of my life. I came to Delhi to do a course in fashion designing. While studying I did a bit of modelling.
That’s how Puri Jagannath saw my pictures and called me. I was game for a movie career,” she said. “Chirutha” gave her the chance to travel abroad. “It was shot in Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. That was incentive enough for me to do the film,” she added. But to start her movie career with a negative character was tantamount to professional suicide. “Every well-wisher advised me against it. No actress in Telugu cinema who has played a negative role at the start of her career has been accepted as a goody-goody heroine. I took the risk, and it worked.
“I became the first Telugu debutant to get mass acceptance in a negative role. In comparison, my character Anwita Chauhan in ‘Youngistaan’ was a piece of cake. Or should I say… a gulaab jamum?”
Cancer is not a death sentence: Manisha Koirala
BEING diagnosed with cancer is not a death sentence, says actress and cancer survivor Manisha Koirala, but adds that the fear of it coming back lurks at the back of your mind. “I didn’t care about my health before, but now I take a lot of care of my health. But there is always a fear whether the cancer will come back, so I now know how to deal with it,” said the 43-year-old who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. She successfully battled the disease. “We have to go step by step,” she told reporters on 4 April at the unveiling of the 7th anniversary cover of Prevention, a health magazine. “Many people tend to lose hope when they are diagnosed with cancer … they tend to give up. There is a stigma attached to cancer but I would like to say cancer is not a death sentence, there is a hope,” said the actress, who was seen in hits like “Dil Se” and “Bombay”. She praises the film fraternity for their support while she was undergoing treatment in New York. “I couldn’t attend the calls as I was undergoing treatment but I used to get calls from Tabu, Gulshan Grover, Shatrughan Sinha and they used to speak to my family about my health,” said the actress who returned here in June last year after being cured.
My son saved my life: David Dhawan
DIRECTOR David Dhawan teamed up with his actor son Varun for the first time in “Main Tera Hero” and gets sentimental about the filial bonding. He says that the film has not only strengthened their bonding, Varun also saved his life during the Bangkok shoot. “Directing Varun has brought us closer together. During a schedule in Bangkok when I took ill, I could feel Varun’s panic,” said the director informing that it was a reaction to medicines that almost killed him in Bangkok. “I had taken a fall in Bangkok and was taking medicine for the injuries. I made the mistake of gulping down the medicines on an empty stomach. The medicines reacted and I passed out. My son saved my life that Call Trudi on 07 3356 0102

Sri Lanka win maiden World T20 title; Sangakkara gets best farewell through cover - but he neither tried to go over nor kept it down, playing it straight into the hands of short cover. Kohli continued with Yuvraj Singh (11) for company. He took only 58 balls to get to his 77. This was his eighth T20 half-century for India. Though the two got a partnership of 55 runs, Yuvraj Singh might have really hurt India's cause. He took 21 balls to get to his 11, putting a lot of unnecessary pressure on Kohli. Yuvraj finally fell, trying to hit out and getting caught in the deep. Captain MS Dhoni (4*) next came in but was completely ineffective against the accuracy of the Lankan bowlers. The last two overs yeilded only 11 runs. Virat finally fell, trying to steal an extra run in the last ball of the innings.
umara Sangakkara's brilliant 52 K helped Sri Lanka win the ICC World T20 2014 final at the Sher-e Bangla National stadium by six wickets against India. They had 13 balls still to play. It was the perfect farewell gift Sangakarra could have given himself and his senior partner Mahela Jayawardane, both of whom played their last T20 on Sunday. Chasing a modest 131 set for victory by India, Sri Lanka had little problems despite losing hard-hitting opener Kusal Perera. Mohit Sharma drew first blood when he removed Perera for 6. The Lankan opener tried to swing at a ball that was outside off but a thick leading edge sent the ball to the safe hands of Ravindra Jadeja at mid-off. But Mahela Jayawardene (24) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (18) came out charging to keep the pressure on India. Finally, R Ashwin struck in his first over to remove Dilshan. It was the carrom ball again that did the trick for Ashwin as Dilshan top-edged to deep square leg. The run rate still kept going but the parttime spin of Suresh Raina came in handy. Jayawardene attempted a cross batted shot but failed to go past Ashwin who took a good diving catch at midwicket. Amit Mishra also removed Lahiru Thirimanne (7) giving just three runs in the 13th over. Thirimanne bottom-edged a Mishra delivery and Dhoni latched on to a sharp catch. Sangakkara, the veteran of many battles, however, held down the other end for Sri
Lanka and India had no answer for him. He kept batting in a calm manner and guided his team home. Thisara Perera contributed in the end with a flashy 21 off 14 balls. In the earlier session, fantastic death bowling by Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara saw Sri Lanka restrict India to a below-par 130 in their 20 overs. Losing the toss and put in to bat first, India lost Ajinkya Rahane in the second over when the opener tried to slog away a backof-the-length delivery and was bowled by Angelo Mathews. The dismissal brought together, Virat Kohli (77) and Rohit Sharma (29) for the most
fruitful partnership of the innings. They took some time to settle themselves in. In the fifth over, they showed signs of shifting gears when Sachithra Senanayake was taken for eight runs. They did not rely only on the big shots and rotated the strike nicely. Kohli had a reprieve in the seventh over when Malinga failed to latched on to a sharp chance. Kohli was 11 at time. Not the one to be bogged down, Kohli replied by hitting the bowler Rangana Herath for a massive six off the last ball of the over. Rohit fell in the eleventh over to Herath when he made room and looked to drive
World T20: fans protest outside Yuvraj’s home Disappointed fans protested outside cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s Manimajra home in Chandigarh after the Indian team loss to Sri Lanka. Neighbours said that 10-12 youths on motorcycles gathered outside the house and started raising slogans, blamin Yuvraj for the team’s defeat. Nobody except the cricketer’s domestic help was present at the house. Attacks like these are not rare in cricket crazy India. Skipper MS Dhoni had been on the receiving end of such attacks both in last October as well as 2007.
Neddies leave some room in the Trophy cabinet Matt Young
AS the business end of the Churches Cricket Two Day season came to a head the Ned Flanders Cricket Club was in a fantastic position to advance to yet another Grand Final. They were leading the competition with just two rounds to go but inexplicably they have lost both these fixtures and in doing so finished equal second. Unfortunately for the proud men in maroon, a count back has meant they miss the season decider for the first time in many years. Aiming to extend their amazing run of three A Grade premierships, the Neddies faced arch nemesis St Barts at Tingalpa. Sending the St Barts men into bat in overcast conditions back fired as the Flanders boys suffered a rare off day in the field. Catches went down with grim regularity as the Barts boys piled on 3 for 310, before declaring at the end of the first day’s play. Big Phil O’Sullivan toiled manfully, as did new man Anthony Mayes. The usually reliable new ball duo of Vasudevan and Field failed to take a wicket between them, for the first time in four summers. Catches win matches and dropped catches cost premierships. With a star studded batting line up, the Flanders team fancied its chances on day two. Batting heavy weights Brendan Dillon and Leo Yin stiffened up the middle order and with the long awaited return of Liam Exelby, 310 runs seemed a very feasible pursuit. Three early poles set the run chase off to a shaky start, before Yin (64) steadied the ship. He shared solid partnerships with Dillon (22) and ‘Chookie’ McMurtrie (14). Some later order heroics from Josh Davidson (29) and mercurial all- rounder Ben Field (33) gave some hope but the 310 was just a bridge too far even for the brilliant Flanders team and they were finally dismissed for 211. The loss represented the first two day fixture to end in defeat for the Neddies in over four seasons. The disappointment was palpable in the ranks after the game but with true Flanders sportsmanship the team offered up a hearty three cheers for the victors. The following week, the Flanders moved back to their ‘spiritual’ home at Yeronga to play the Rangers. Triumph would secure the boys another crack at St Barts in the Grand Final. Confidence was high as the club practiced with rare intensity all week. Winning the toss, I decided that having first use was the best option, especially after the punishment we had received from St Bart’s when they were sent in. With some big guns out of the line- up, the Neddies struggled again at the top of the order. At 3 for 13, the team was in strife until veteran ‘Chook’ McMurtrie teamed up Call Trudi on 07 3356 0102

with opener Ryan Hocking. Their century stand seemed to have the ship sailing nicely before Hocking was surprisingly bowled by the only ball that missed the middle of his broad bat. Late order support from ‘keeper-batsman Cam Prosser and Jon Pearce helped the big Chook add some respectability to the score, before a late flurry of wickets saw the Flanders dismissed for 178. McMurtrie’s score of 80 was a colossal effort by the big man. His courage in the face of adversity is always inspirational for his whole club. Late on day one the game swung back in favor of the Flanders as Benny Field carved up the Rangers top order. His three wickets were supplemented by wickets from Jayram Vasudevan and Mick Menagh and when stumps were drawn, the game hung in the balance with the Rangers wobbling at 5 for 120. Some heroics were needed early on day two and unfortunately for the Flanders, the heroics came from the young Rangers batsmen, who withstood everything the bowlers could hurl at them. Grand Final glory slipped away. The disappointment was eased a trifle by some second innings ballistics from Bruce Piccone and Ryan Hocking. They combined for an opening partnership of 75 off just seven overs. Hocking went on to record his second half century for the match, with a brutal 61 not out. As stumps were drawn, the Neddies stood at 1 for 91 from nine explosive overs of batting. It was a shame batting had not been so easy in the first innings. So as the sun sets on the 2013-2014 cricket season and footy starts to fill the TV screens and thoughts of Brisbane, the Ned Flanders Cricket Club will contemplate a rare ‘trophy-less’ season and prepare for our next cricketing adventure. The team is heading to Chile and Argentina later in the year, to fulfill their greatest ambition- to play national teams in every continent. The Flanders Club would like to thank all of their loyal supporters in the Indian community, for yet another summer. THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, April, 2014 — 39
