2 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, April, 2021
From the Publisher Welcome to April, what a start to the month, a snap lock down in greater Brisbane saw many Easter plans being shattered, the debate will always be there whether it was justified, from my perspective it was justified as the consequences, otherwise could have been devastating. Easter plans had to be adjusted, and going by everyone’s social media posts, people seem to have adjusted and adapted. With borders closed just before Easter everyone planned holidays in their respective states and kept the economy localized. Personally, we managed to get away just after the lockdown was lifted to a nature reserve in Queensland, and it turned out to be one of the best get away we had in a long time. So, for four days we did not see any traffic, no cars, and no traffic lights just in tune with nature at Thala Nature reserve in Port Douglas, a perfect retreat and getaway. The award-winning design has considered all environmental aesthetic in an ecofriendly manner. The serene ambience with the ever-present soothing sound of the sea. We enjoyed a special prepared picnic for two having the entire beach to
ourselves, we were dropped and picked in a beach buggy to the remote location, a destination that I would recommend. I am aware of many functions that have been postponed or cancelled, a good call by the organizers as the risks are too high and not worth taking. Having said that I am also aware that many functions did go ahead and were successfully organized such as the Sikh games, congratulations to all who were involved in the management of the Brisbane component. We will keep you all posted and updated with the other functions and events planned for the rest of the year, such as India day Fair planned for 15th August 2021, now we can confirm that the venue remains the same, Roma Street Parkland. Annual Girmit Diwas will be observed on the 14th of May at Queensland Multicultural Centre in Kangaroo point. GOPIO Qld’s mental health seminar on Mental Health will be held on 29th of May at Queensland Multicultural Centre And now to our last Music junction, after the success of Yousuf Alikhan segment we took a rather adventurous approach hosted a live performance with
live musicians. The artists were Arnab and Annie from Kolkata, India, they were introduced to Australian India Radio by Chandan Das. The show hosted by Pragya Ojha Sharma was applauded and appreciated by audience from around the globe and at the time of publication had over sixty thousand views. The feedback has been exceptionally good, and we have been identified few technically challenges which will be rectified in the next show. Music Junction is a monthly music show presented on the last Sunday of every month from 6PM Brisbane Time. Our facebook live segment has a new look, we have separated the specialist programs from our news segment, one off interview will still feature in the daily segment, but the regular specialist programs will be stand alone shows. At the moment we have Real Estate Updates with Usha Chandra of Globenet Realty on Wednesdays, Travel updates with Tanvi Goel of AusIndia Travel, migration Update with Suman Dua, Aap ki Sehath (Your Health) segment with Indian Medical Association of Queensland. Please check our facebook posts for the updated timings of all the shows, the good part is that if your have missed the live segment you can always go back and watch any segment on either facebook or YouTube, the latter is easier to search via. All of our shows are simulcast on Australian Indian Radio facebook page and Australian Indian Radio YouTube channel. We would like to thank all our valued correspondent for their ongoing support, who have been continually providing informative articles on a regular basis. A very special appreciation for all the radio presenters who have been preparing and presenting such beautiful programs, even under these conditions you have taken on the challenge of remotely presenting the show, well done team. A special thanks to all the advertisers, it is because of your support that we have been able to continue our publication, just a note that taking into account the current conditions we have special tailored solutions for your business, please contact our sales and marketing team for an attractive package. Now is the perfect time to place yourself in the market ahead of your competition, as the economy is posed for recovery and should be you. Festival wise April is a very eventful month, we have Ram Navami which also marks Hindu New year which is celebrated in different states with different names, we also have Hanuman Jayanti, Ugadi, Chitrai and beginning of Ramadan and Baisakhi just to name a few, wishing everyone all the best for Bhartiya Navwarsh, this the greatness of a diverse and secular nation displaying unity in diversity. Until next month, happy reading, and stay safe. —Umesh Chandra OAM

Partner Visa’s The Department of Home Affairs allows Australian Citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor their married or de facto partners on the basis of their genuine and ongoing relationship. Partner visas are generally processed in two stages in Australia. Sponsored applicants must hold a provisional visa, a Partner (Temporary) visa, in order to be granted a permanent visa, a Partner (Residence) visa. The grant of the provisional visa enables them to travel to and remain in Australia on a temporary basis. Following the grant of a temporary visa, a permanent visa may be granted where the decision-maker is satisfied the relationship has been ongoing for at least 2 years and is genuine and continuing. In some circumstances, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection may grant a waiver for the 2 year waiting period, or grant
permanency even where the relationship has broken down before the end of the 2 year period. Generally a provisional partner visa takes up to 12 months to be processed. Depending on the circumstances, visa applicants may be able to lodge their partner visa in Australia (subclass 820/801), and be granted a bridging visa, which will allow them to stay in Australia whilst the visa is being processed. Alternatively, a partner visa may be lodged and granted offshore (subclass 309/100). Applicants will be required to show that together with their partner, they have a genuine commitment to a shared life together. This may be evidenced through financial interdependence, social context, nature of the household, nature of commitment to each other, and history of relationship. The department may take into account the cultural background of the applicant,

Flashback: vivid memories of Holi in India
By Rama Gaind International travel is at a standstill, temporarily, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but memories created through previous trips last a lifetime. One of the most unforgettable times to visit India is during a festival — and Holi (also called holika or phagwa) — is the country’s most glittering celebration when streets throughout the nation are transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour. The annual festival — which this year fell on 29 March — celebrated spring and commemorated various events in Hindu mythology. Reminiscing about my last trip to New Delhi, a year before the pandemic outbreak, brought back unadulterated images of gay abandon and general merrymaking. Thousands of people, dressed in white, came together in every corner of the country, onto the streets to share in dance, music, family celebrations with gusto, get-togethers and visual stimulation. This was an unforgettable experience in the capital, which was a dazzling display of colour and good cheer. Holi is an ancient Hindu religious festival, known as the ‘festival of colours’ or the festival of love. It is also said to signify the victory of good over evil. Revellers hurl brightly coloured, perfumed powders and water at one another and anyone is considered fair game regardless of gender, caste, class or age. Indians, at home and abroad, gather together with family, friends and neighbours to throw balloon bombs, fire water pistols and splash coloured water as they run through the streets. They generally go a little wild. Shops and businesses close down for the day. Celebrated originally as the end of winter, it also celebrates the legend of Prahlada, who was protected from the flames by Lord Vishnu. Despite the abusive nature of his father King Hiranyakashipu, he continued his devotion towards Vishnu. Even though this story is the one
A kaleidoscope of colour is what transforms a nation during the Holi festival in India.
No one can resist joining in the spirit of the festival of colours – Holi – in India. that’s generally recognised, the myths and legends that surround Holi differ around the country. However, the basic principle remains the same: it is meant to symbolise the victory of good over evil, the importance of love and happiness and support for new friendships. There is so much to see and do in New India, the capital, but a highlight was a visit to the 42-metre-high India Gate, in New Delhi. It commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I. Monument to love Moving out of the capital
was the best for sightseeing: combining a tour of the famous Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra and Jaipur — only further broadened our experience of the boisterous merriment. Agra is a major tourist destination because of the numerous splendid Mughal-era buildings. At the top of the list was the Taj Mahal, followed by the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. All three are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Jaipur is the capital and largest city of Rajasthan in north India. Explore the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Amber and Jaigarh Forts. To “be fearless in the

One of the best descriptions about the world’s second most populous
country comes from French scholar Romain Rolland: "If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India".
THE FIGHT FOR YOUR MARRIAGE
Pastor Suresh Dass Joseph josephdass@optusnet.com.au Dear reader, it is with
much joy we bring to you the word of God. I want to talk about building good and healthy marriages. While it is easy to remember when we got married and where we got married, we sometimes forget why we got married. In the scriptures we read, God created Eve because
Adam had no mate; unlike the rest of His creation, he was incomplete. If one of the purposes of marriage is closeness, then the enemy of marriage is distance. But problems arise when you expect your spouse to meet every need you have got. Only God can do that. One time a man asked his friend why he never got married. He replied, "because I was looking for the ideal woman.” "I suppose you have never found one yet?" said the man. The friend then replied, "Of course I did, but just my luck, she too was looking for the ideal man.” The word of God says (Ephesians 5v25), "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Can a marriage be perfect? No, but when

two people make up their minds to give themselves entirely to one another, they can come pretty-close. One time they surveyed married couples and found ten reasons why people said they were unhappy. 1) They felt unloved 2) They said hurtful things to each other 3) They didn't think alike in many areas 4) They couldn't talk to each other 5) They had little insight into each other's feelings 6) They felt taken for granted 7) They lacked someone to confide in 8) Each spouse felt he or she was giving more than each other 9) They rarely complimented each other 10) They desired more affection
Since God performed the first marriage, talking to Him about yours is an excellent place to start. Areas to be on the lookout for. 1) FinanceOne of the most common areas that cause marriages to fail is finances. That's interesting because we have more money today than at any time in the past. But it is our lifestyle that has changed. The more we have, the more we want, and the more we are willing to go into debt to get it. From buying what we can afford now, the urge is to buy what we want. Then you realise you are in so much debt that you can no longer pay it back. Imagine the stress that puts on a marriage. 2) CommitmentIf you live by impulse instead of commitment,
then your marriage will suffer. A prominent psychiatrist said, "I have counselled thousands of couples, and I have yet to meet a happy adulterer. The results are always the same: shame, fear, loss, loneliness, and depression. When you violate your integrity, it is hard to live in your skin. The Bible says you are supposed to care about your spouse's spiritual, emotional, material, and sexual needs. So, start discussing these things. And if you find it difficult to talk about them, get helpyour marriage is worth fighting for. And remember, the secret to happiness in marriage isn't finding the right person; it's becoming the right person. 3) Copingmarriage may alleviate the problem of loneliness, but
it presents the challenge of getting along with another person. our attitude should be, "Yes, we can work it out." It teaches you that you can't always avoid conflict, but you can make it work for you. The truth is unless there are two winners in a marriage, there are, none at all. So, remember the closeness to marriage is not a sparkling conversation, or shared interests, or intimacy. As good as they are, the secret is being thoughtful, kind, respectful, and considerate. This will allow you to make good decisions on your finances, relationship, and investments. You example will set the pace even for your children to experience strong and healthy marriages. God bless you.

Anger to Compassion - Sadhguru, Isha Foundation People keep asking me
about how they can control their anger. It does not matter how much people preach “don’t get angry,” when certain situations arise, you do get angry. Emotional states that you call anger, hate, lust, compassion or love – from the lowest to the highest – are certain types of expression of the same energy. For many people, anger is the most intense situation they have experienced in their life. People want some intensity, somewhere. They do not know how to be intense. Either through physical action, or through anger, or through pain – this is the only way they know how to be intense. The very reason why drugs and sex has become such a big thing in the world is because somehow people want to experience some intensity, at least for a few moments. It is the intensity which draws them, and that is the only thing that human beings are seeking; and that is the only thing that will liberate man from his present bondages. Unfortunately for most people, their fear, anger or hatred are the most intense situations in their lives. Their love is never so intense, their peace is never so intense, their joy is never so intense, but their
negativities are intense. So they experience power in negative situations. Anger is enormous intensity; it is an intensity which hurts you. It is an intensity which can get you into a lot of trouble and destroy people around you and yourself, in so many ways. But if you transform your energy in a certain way, it naturally becomes compassion and love – then nobody needs to teach

morality. And slowly as this process goes further, you reach the pinnacle of selfawareness and experience a unity with all life. Suppose you start experiencing yourself as part of people around you, after that there is no one need to teach you to be good, and not harm or kill. Once you experientially are a part of everything, you can do something as the situation demands, but without anger. What you
have to do, you do. But when you do it with anger and hatred, it is of no value – whatever you do. The whole process of yoga is based on this. A day will come when even if you are put into the most extreme situation, your energies will remain very calm. How you respond will depend on the situation you are in, who you are, what your capabilities have. When you act out of unity with all life,
you act without identity. Only then can you function out of your intelligence. Yoga means to cultivate your energy in such a way that gradually it breaks the physical limitations and elevates you to the highest level of awareness, the flowering of human potential. Ranked amongst the fifty most influential people in India, Sadhguru is a yogi, mystic, visionary and

WEIRD INDIAN RITUALS THAT WILL LEAVE YOU SHOCKED FROM: DHAVAL VYAS. VADODARA. INDIA
India is a multi-cultural country and has many languages, religion and customs. Indian weddings are full of great colour but there are some weird ceremonies which may appear very strange. Each state has a ritual or a tradition that is commonly practiced in the region. But, sometimes, these customs are so strange that it becomes hard to find any logic in them. But they are performed with great fervor all over the country Weird traditions of India – India is the most diverse country in the world, people from various race, culture, ethnicity, religion etc live together here. All of the diverse people have their diverse rituals and traditions. But the best part about India is that despite this huge diversity people live together happily. Well! talking about the traditions, there are few things that are really weird that will leave you amazed.
Baby tossing: This traditions majorly happens in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Let us tell you that it is one of the most horrifying rituals in the country. It takes place in December. In this ritual, the father climbs the stairs of the temple holding his baby in his hands and then he handed over the baby to the men waiting on the top of the temple and few men remain on the other side holding a blanket. The men from the top tosses the baby towards the blanket and the people holding the blanket give it to the mother. In this process, the baby must not be more than 2 years old. It is believed that this ritual helps the baby to become stronger. Baby dunked in boiling water: This is surely the most inhumane ritual ever. This is majorly performed in the Baijalpur District of Karnataka. They dunk three-month-old baby in hot boiling water however they life the baby immediately but it causes severe burns on the body of a little child. It is believed that by performing the ritual they thank the deities to bless them with a kid. This tradition really sounds very stupid, how can you impress God by harming your own child? Knowing the gender: In Khukra village of Jharkhand, there is a unique tradition of identifying the gender of a child born in mother’s womb, which has been practiced for the last 400 years. From the shape of
people marrying trees in India but ever heard of frog marriages? Apparently, Barun Devta, the rain God is pleased by frog matrimony. As believed by the village people of the Jorhat district of Assam, if wild frogs are married in a traditional Hindu wedding, it will bring an end to a prolonged dry spell and rain will pour heavily within days. It’s crucial that the wedding follows all the Hindu marriage traditions and is conducted in the presence of a priest. Cracking coconuts on people’s head: What will you do for good health and success? Will you let a priest smash a coconut on your head? Probably not! But surprisingly in a remote village of Tamil Nadu, it’s believed that cracking coconuts on one’s head will please the deity and lead the townsfolk to prosperity and well-being. Despite warnings from medical practitioners, this tradition is followed with much allegiance by locals.
the moon on the mountain, they find out the gender of the fetus! There is a mountain in the village on which the shape of a moon is called “Chand Mountain”. Pregnant women of the village throw a stone from a certain distance on the shape of the moon. If the stone lying in the hands of the pregnant woman is within the moon, means a boy will be born and if it gets out of the moon it means it’s a girl. The villagers here have incredible faith in this tradition. 4. Death of Kinnaras. (transgenders): Life of transgender is already tough and it doesn’t get easy even after the death. No matter at what time a transgender dies but they are not allowed do the funeral at daytime. It is again an inhumane practice that takes place in India. Transgender have been fighting for their rights since long. And the weirdest thing that the transgender themselves

beats the dead body and remain starved for seven days. Let your inner animal out: The festival is celebrated in the Thrissur district of Kerala every year where trained artists, dressed up as Tigers, perform on traditional folk songs. Although watching so many colors dancing on the streets is a sight to behold for many, the tradition still remains somewhat bizarre. It’s fascinating to see what people are ready to do in the name of God and the pain they suffer to nurture deep rooted superstitions. Is there a way to tell that the supreme deity is pleased by all this? We doubt. The camel beauty pageant: The festival is celebrated in the month of November in Rajasthan’s Pushkar city and it lasts for 5 days. During these 5 days, more than 50,000 dressed up Camels parade and compete in beauty and

really SLOW!
Walking on fire: If you thought walking on fire was only Bollywood actor Jeentendra’s forte in his movie Haatim Tai, you need to watch people celebrating the festival popularly called Thimithi in Tamil Nadu. People celebrate the festival by walking barefoot on hot firewood or charcoal to honour Hindu goddess Draupati Amman. And, if you thought devotees could just run or walk swiftly through the pit filled with hot wood, you were wrong again! In order to make the goddess happy, the devotees have to walk through the pit really,
Marrying Animals to get rid of ghosts: Marriage to odd objects and creatures seems to be the solution to most problems it seems. People in some remote Indian villages believe that if a girl is born with a facial deformity then she is possessed with ghosts and will have an ill-fate. As an antidote to this problem, the girl must marry an animal to exorcise herself off demons. Once that’s been done, she’s free to marry a boy. No divorce from the animal required. Frog marriages: You may have heard of
Rolling over food: In Karnataka's Kukke Subraman Temple, people from lower castes roll on the floor over the leftover food eaten by the Brahmins. They practice the snana ritual in the hope that it will cure them of all the ailments. In a country where we have started shunning away the ideology of caste system, this type of custom is still a practiced. Piercing the flesh with hooks: In this ritual, people pierce their skins with hooks, spikes, and skewers to show their devotion to Lord Murugan. Some even pull heavy objects by attaching them to their bodies using hooks that are dug into their skins. This grotesque task is performed during the Tamil month of Thai. Bani festival: This festival defies logic. Every year during Dusshera, people from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh gather at the Devaragattu Temple in the Kurnool district with lathis. Their purpose is to hit each other on the head with the sticks. These men start this celebration at midnight and it goes on until dawn, with people drenched in blood and heavily bruised heads. As a result, many deaths and injuries have been reported during this festival. These were just some of the weird traditions that are still performed by people around the country.

FESTIVALS HAVE A VERY WHOLESOME BEARING ON PEOPLE. Festivals break the monotony of life; create an environment of cultural harmony; teach us to bond with one another in friendship; carry moral, ethical and social values of life, that inevitably mix up with entertainment through festivals.
HOLI, HOLAKA, HOLIKA & PRAHALAD • HOLI is the name of the festival. • HOLAKA is the process of roasting the freshly harvested legumes/pulses (grains growing in pods) on the bonfire fueled by the straw left of the harvest. The roasting process gives rise to vapors from the grains is an effective antidote (remedy) for health problems arising out of vatapitta-cough (air blockages, bile/acidity & phlegm). The fragrance engenders
happiness, satisfaction. • HOLIKA is the pod husk or chaff of any grain (grams, peas, wheat, etc.) that separates from the grains. Holika is referred as the mother of the grain, without which the grains would not exist. Planters cheer up as the husk (HolikA) sacrifice itself to save the grains, known as PRAHALAD. Holi, the bonfire as Yajna Fire purifies (used to extract metals in the purest state from ores in foundries, by goldsmiths). The Holi bonfire reminds us to burn the evil (thoughts, speech & physical actions) out of our life and make way to add the flourishing mosaic to our life, righteous living (Dharma). Grains of the new harvest, herbs, sweet, odoriferous substances mixed with ghee are offered to the Holi bonfire. Remembering Girmit – May 14
Rajendra Prasad
The ship Leaonidas which brought first Indentured Indian labourers to Fiji on 14 May, 1879. It arrived in Levuka on 14th, but berthed on 15th May, 1879 because of bad weather.
By Guest Writer, Author Rajendra Prasad On this Fiji Girmit Remembrance Day on 14 May, we salute the sacrifices and vision of our Girmitiya forebears. Their resolve ensured that the plan of British to keep Girmitiya children uneducated failed. They pooled in their own resources and built primary schools in the villages. They felt a strong conviction in their hearts that education of their children would liberate them from servitude and poverty. That is exactly what happened. Today, we are the beneficiaries of that vision. Every year, the spectre of Girmit stalks us and again, around May 14 we will again appear before the tomb of Girmit with hearts laden with sorrow and gratitude for sacrifices of the pioneer generation. To many it is a distant memory, which is best left to dissipate and disappear in the mist of time. Ignorance is the fruit of their selfish choice but to people like me, Girmit cannot be erased from my conscious memory. It is the spring of my life where I return frequently to pay my debt of gratitude to the sacrifices that my grandparents made at the altar of Girmit. Their suffering and sorrows; grief and tears, nourished the lives of successive generations, leaving a debt of gratitude that cries for recognition and remembrance. Our detachment from
Girmitiyas in front of sugar mill our Girmit history was another successful British plan. Successive generations were completely cut off, as if Girmit did not exist. The simple reason for this was that disclosure of British crimes against the Girmitiyas could have inspired them to seek redress. In addition to this, illiteracy was widespread until the emergence of the third generation by when the crimes of Girmit were submerged. History books written, largely by European writers, did not disclose the horrid crimes of Girmit to protect British interests. The descendants of the Girmitiyas were made to learn the history of other nations and cultures, including the British and indigenous Fijian history but not their own. In the British plan for Fiji, the descendants of the Girmitiyas were not to be educated to ensure that they remained a labouring class, working as cooks, gardeners and performing other menial tasks for their white masters. So provision of schools by the Government was scarce. This was one area where the British failed. The Girmitiyas did not wait for provision of

They pooled in their own resources and built primary schools in the villages. They felt a strong conviction in their hearts that education of their children would liberate them from servitude and poverty. It was a mammoth battle and the sweetest victory. If this vision of the Girmitiyas was not pursued with courage, wisdom and sacrifice, our community
would have remained illiterate, unskilled and earning our livelihood as menial workers. For their sacrifices, the Girmitiyas placed upon us a debt of gratitude that must ring through generations. Education remains the most treasured weapon, bequeathed to us by the Girmitiyas, which will be the lamps to our feet in guiding us to our destinies. The Girmitiyas endured their suffering and captured them in different ways. This bidesia, a deep lamentation, was composed in the sugarcane fields of Fiji by an unknown Girmitiya. It captures their helplessness, anguish, anxiety and pain. Kali kothariya ma biteye nahin ratiyaan ho, Kiske batayee ham peer re bidesia. Din raat hamri beeti dukhwa mein umariya ho, Sukha re naynwa ke neer re bidesia. (In the dark rooms (of the coolie lines), the nights are difficult to endure. Who do we tell the depth of our pains? Day and night of our lives are consumed in suffering. Tears have dried from our eyes.
Jesus said “Arise and Shine…”
He is Alive! Key Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:10 …But now has been revealed by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. We are excited to bring you the Good News of a Great Joy. Our theme is simple and clear. It is to make God real and personal. And to present God as a Living and Loving Person; so you may understand His true character, nature and relate to Him personally. God is not an object or an image or an imagination of human mind. God is a living and loving person. We find this amazing revelation in the pages of Holy Bible. Keep reading His Words with an open heart and humble spirit. You will encounter His awesome forgiveness, mercy and unfailing
love. Here is a huge question, but it is also extremely important question. Is it possible that we can defeat the death? This question has baffled the mankind for centuries. But simple answer is: Yes. Here, you will understand how I learnt and understood the defeat of death; and I am alive to write this miraculous narrative. It is important ask this question: What is death? Death is the separation

from the true source of life. God the Author and Creator of all things is only true source of life. Interestingly, I grew up calling my dad “Abba”. Contrary to the culture and tradition in my country, most families called their dad “Appa”. When we refer God as “Abba” we relate to Him as our Father, sustainer and source of all life and light. Therefore it is important ask next question: What is the origin and of death? Paul the great apostle of the first century narrates how
in the beginning, sin of Adam introduced death to mankind. In his divinely inspired letter to the Roman believers of first century; Paul writes: You know the story of how Adam landed us in the dilemma we’re in—first sin, then death, and no one exempt from either sin or death. That sin disturbed relations with God in everything and everyone, but the extent of the disturbance was not clear until God spelled it out in detail to prophet Moses. So death, this huge abyss
Wreck of Syria Ship which ran aground in May 1884 with loss of many Girmitiya lives. When the cruel masters ignored their pleas and justice system failed them, they found relief and comfort, capturing their emotions in their own mysterious ways. In groups, they gathered, shared, consoled and wiped each other’s tears. Bidesia was a common song that Girmitiyas sang and shared. It was a folksong that captured the longing and lament of the heart of the victims and the singer, usually a woman, sang with tears streaming down. When they were around, I did not, at that time, understand the depth of pain and sorrow that radiated from those innocent eyes, tormented minds and tortured bodies. I did not understand the bowed legs, caused by carrying heavy loads or those that walked with a limp. These were the emblems of Girmit that the Girmitiyas took to their graves. In the innocence of our bachpana (childhood) we teased, mocked or laughed at
separating us from God, dominated the landscape from Adam to Moses. Even those who didn’t sin precisely as Adam did by disobeying a specific command of God still had to experience this termination of life, this separation from God. But Adam, who got us into this, also points ahead to the One who will get us out of it. (Rom.5:12-14 Message). The Message of the Bible gives us a living hope. This hope is received by accepting God’s forgiveness for our failure to live right. The message of Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday is filled with strong Hope. Without this kind hope we perish. It our hope that you will encounter your Creator today. You don’t need a thousand years for your Salvation (Mukti). You can receive your greatest miracle ‘Mukti’ today. This is the confidence you can have in Christ alone. Only when we understand that we all have fallen short of
them and today, I want to hug and apologize to them for my failings. The very thought of it fills my eyes with tears. But where do I go? My heart pants with desire to mitigate my guilt. The least I can now do is to remember and pay my debt of gratitude to them on May 14 and seek forgiveness. We have built our lives on the foundations of their lives. I invite all Indo-Fijians to join me at this altar of gratitude. It will be partial redemption but satisfying. [About the Author – Rajendra Prasad is a founding trustee of FIJI GIRMIT FOUNDATION NEW ZEALAND. He is also author of two block-buster books of Fiji’s Girmit and contemporary history. These books are “Tears in Paradise – Suffering and Struggles of Indians in Fiji 1879-2004” and “Enslaved in Paradise – A History of Mammoth Betrayals of Fijians by the British, Chiefs and Leaders of Fiji 1876- 2006”

Sita - The Lakshmi Incarnate The ninth day of the month
of Vaishakh (May – June) is celebrated as Sita Navami or the Birthday of Sita. It is believed that King Janak of Mithila found Sita on this day at Sita-Kund in Sitamarhi, Bihar. Sita is the main female character of the Ramayan. She is known by many other names including Janaki, Vaidehi and Maithili. Stories relating to Sita’s birth vary in different editions and retellings of the Ramayan. According to the Valmiki Ramayan, Janak was ploughing a piece of land to make it suitable as a site for performing a Yagya, religious sacrament. During the tilling, his plough struck a vessel in the furrow. He opened the cover of the vessel and noticed a baby girl in it. He brought the baby home. Janak and his wife Sunayana had not yet their own child so adopted her as their daughter. The baby was named Sita, a Sanskrit word for furrow. The term Sita has been mentioned as a deity of fertility in the Vedas. Mantras 6 and 7 of Rigved hymn 4.57 are addressed to Sita. According to Grihya-Sutras, they were chanted during the start of ritual ploughing of land for abundant agricultural yields. Sita transpired to be auspicious for Janak. Soon after her adoption, Queen Sunayana delivered a baby girl, who was named Urmila. The kingdom received good rain that resulted in abundant harvests. Subjects became more prosperous and happier. Fortune-tellers predicted that Sita would marry an extraordinary person, and would contribute greatly in destroying evil forces. They also indicated that she would be required to make incredible sacrifices in life. Janak had inherited a bow from his ancestors. It was used by lord Shiv himself. The bow was so massive that no human used it, and it was stowed on a platform. When Sita attained the marriageable age, Janak decided to find a suitable husband for her. He was conscious of her exemplary traits. He concluded that lifting the Shiv-bow and stringing it would be an appropriate test of abilities for a candidate aspiring to wed Sita. A Svayamvar, ritual for choosing one’s husband, was arranged for Sita. It was formally declared that whoever lifted and strung the Shiv-bow would qualify to marry her. Kings and princes from various kingdoms were invited to participate. Sage Vishvamitra was invited to witness the event. He, along with Ram and Lakshman, arrived at Janakpur, the capital of Janak’s kingdom. As a part of the ritual, Sita went to worship goddess Gauri whose temple was located in the royal garden. Ram and Lakshman were picking flowers for Vishvamitra in the same garden. Sita and Ram saw each other in the garden for the first time and were enchanted.
Later, Sita visited the temple and prayed to goddess Gauri. She was conscious of her father’s terms for Svayamvar and hence did not directly pray for Ram to be bestowed as her husband. She only prayed for fulfilling her wishes which goddess was aware of as an omniscient. Sita was exceptionally beautiful and an embodiment of charm. Poets and storytellers expressed their inability to find any simile to describe her grace. Tulasidas states in Ramcharit Manas that what to tell about mortal women, even celestials like Saraswati being a chatterer, Paravti being half bodied, other half being Shiv and Rati being distressed due to her bodiless husband Kamdev cannot be equated to Sita. It is beyond comprehension to compare Sita with Lakshmi whose brothers are poison and alcohol, referring to her origin from churning of the Celestial Ocean. In the Svayamvar, all the invited candidates failed to move the bow, let alone string it, which made Sita and her parents anxious. Seeing them disturbed, Vishvamitra asked Ram to try. He easily lifted the bow and as he attempted to string it, the bow broke. Sita accepted and garlanded Ram as the successful candidate to marry her. Envoys were sent to Ram’s father, king Dasarath, with invitation to participate in his son’s wedding. Wedding ceremonies were held and Sita married Ram according to family traditions. Sunayana, her mother, instructed Sita about the duties and responsibilities of a newly wed wife. After the completion of rituals and celebrations, Sita along with Ram and other family members came to Ayodhya. She was welcomed with pomp and ceremony. She lived happily in Ayodhya with her husband and the

extended family. When his coronation was abandoned, Ram accepted his exile for fourteens years to uphold his father’s pledge to his stepmother Kaikeyi. Ram decided to go alone to the forest to live a life of ascetic. When Sita became aware of his decision, she insisted on accompanying him. Ram attempted to dissuade her but she remained adamant to follow him. She was willing to sacrifice her life if she was separated from her husband. Eventually, she went to the forest with Ram and Lakshman. She wore the dress of ascetics, the similar as Ram and Lakshman had donned. On the way, Sita offered prayers to River Ganga. They crossed the river by a boat. After crossing the river, Ram wished to give to the boatman the fare, but he had nothing valuable to give. Sita realised his predicament, and immediately took out her ring and presented it to Ram to pay the fare. While roaming in the forest, Sita along with Ram and Lakshman came upon the Ashram of sage Atri. Sita met the sage’s wife Anusuya who was an accomplished ascetic. Anusuya gifted Sita divine dresses, which always remained fresh, clean and spotless. Sita listened to her discourse on the roles and responsibilities of women. Sita also visited other sages throughout her wandering. During the later part of exile, the trio made their residence in Panchvati on the banks of River Godavari. There they met the bird Jatayu, who became a friend. Once Surpanakha, a sister of Ravan, visited their Ashram. She threatened to devour Sita in order to free Ram for herself. Lakshman disfigured her by cutting her nose. This led to a direct confrontation with demonic forces, headed by Ravan. Sita saw a golden deer strolling around her dwelling
during her stay in Panchvati. It was the demon Marich who had changed his appearance through illusion. Ravan had sent him to attract Sita’s attention. Sita was charmed by the deer’s beauty and insisted on having it. Ram went to catch the deer, instructing Lakshman to ensure Sita’s safety. Soon they heard a distress call in the voice of Ram. Sita became alarmed and sent Lakshman away to help Ram. In the meantime, Ravan, in the disguise of an ascetic appeared before Sita. On the pretext of asking for alms, he kidnapped her. Jatayu noticed Ravan’s offence and fought against him to free Sita from his captivity, but was killed. Ravan carried Sita away to his capital Lanka, and kept her in the Ashokvan. During the kidnapping flight, Sita dropped on a hill some personal items that later became useful in finding her whereabouts. Sita spent her time in Ashokvan reminiscing the past and hoping to get rescued by his powerful husband. Sentries kept her under their close observation, and threatened and harassed her. Ravan persuaded her to accept him as her husband, but Sita always derided him for his transgression. When Ram and Lakshman returned to their Ashram after killing the illusory deer, they could not find Sita. They started their search for her in the forest. During this time, Ram met Hanuman, who introduced him to Sugreev. Both Ram and Sugreev became friends and committed to help each other. Sugreev showed Ram the items, which were dropped from the sky and had been found on the hills. Ram recognised those items that belonged to Sita. After becoming a king, Sugreev led the search for Sita. He sent his followers in all directions to locate her.
The team that included Hanuman was sent to the South. Hanuman flew over the sea, landed in Lanka and found Sita in the Ashokvan. He hid in a tree and dropped the ring that Ram had given to him, as his token to present to her. Hanuman then appeared before Sita and disclosed the purpose of his visit to her. Sita recognised the ring and trusted Hanuman. Sita was so impressed with Hanuman that she blessed him with immortal life. Sita gave Hanuman her crest jewel to deliver to Ram, as a symbol of his meeting with her. With the help of monkeys and bears, Ram built a bridge, which connected mainland India to Lanka, and landed with his army on its shores. A war was declared, and Ravan and other demon warriors were killed. Vibhishan, a brother of Ravan, who had defected to Ram before the war, was coronated the king of Lanka. Sita was freed from captivity. She was brought to Ram to unite with him. However, Ram looked contemptuously at her and demanded that she prove her innocence and purity. Sita asked Lakshman to fetch wood and prepare the fire. Lakshman followed her wish. Sita entered into the burning fire and came out of it unharmed. Ram felt relieved and welcomed his wife with love and respect. The time of their exile was close to end. They boarded the Pushpak Viman, an aerial carrier, and departed for Ayodhya. En route, Ram showed Sita the places where major events had occurred during her captivity. Sita along with Ram and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after completing the duration of banishment. Bharat, the acting king and his entourage welcomed them. Ram was crowned as the king and Sita as the queen of Ayodhya. They ruled for
many years and their rule, known as Ram Rajya, became an ideal model of governance for subsequent generations. The Uttarkand of Valmiki Ramayan contains additional episodes including the second exile of Sita. When she became pregnant, she expressed her desire to visit the forest and enjoy natural beauty. In the meantime, Ram became aware of a remark by a washerman who berated Sita’s purity due to her living in other man’s house. Although his trust and love to Sita never wavered, Ram decided to send her to the forest to allay misconceptions among his subjects. As instructed by Ram, Lakshman drove her to the forest and left her alone. Disciples of sage Valmiki spotted her and informed their preceptor about the lonely woman. Valmiki learned about her situation through his divine vision and welcomed Sita to his Ashram. In due course she gave birth to twin brothers Lav and Kush. Sita raised her sons alone. They grew up valiant and intelligent. Valmiki taught them the Ramayan, which they sang melodiously. During Sita’s exile, Ram performed a royal sacrifice in which a golden statue represented her. The twins attended the ceremony as singers of Ramayan. They met Ram and claimed they were his sons. Their mother Sita had been unjustly exiled. Ram demanded that let Sita prove her innocence in front of the citizens of Ayodhya. Sage Valmiki brought Sita to Ram’s court. In front of the audience, Sita sought refuge in the earth if she was truthful and chaste. Immediately, the earth opened and Sita entered into it. Various other stories relating to Sita are also popular. According to a tale in Padma Puran, Sita heard a pair of parrots talking about her marriage with Ram when she was young. The parrots had overheard the story in Valmiki’s Ashram where they resided. Sita was fascinated by their account. She caught them and placed in a cage. She wished to keep them until her marriage to test the accuracy of their tale. The female parrot was pregnant. She requested Sita to release them, as they were made to roam freely in the sky. Sita released the male but kept the female in captivity. The female soon died due to separation from her partner. Before dying, she cursed Sita to be separated from her husband when she became pregnant. The male parrot was also heartbroken and died. He was born as a washerman in Ayodhya in his next life. It was the same person who spread gossip about Sita. Sita is believed to be an incarnation of goddess Lakshmi. She appeared on the earth to help Ram, the Vishnu incarnate to destroy demonic forces. She is worshipped along with Ram in temples across the world. —Awadhesh Sharma

Obstacles During Mantra – Japa and methods to overcome them
content of this article is taken from the satsang of H.H. Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu. Pujya Bapu Ji had addressed the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in September 1993, that was 100 years after Swami Vivekananda addressed the same parliament in September 1893. To save the youth who are being ruined due to the lustful festivals like valentine’s day, in 2006 Pujya Bapu Ji initiated celebrations of Matri-Pitri Pujan Diwas (Parents’ worship day) on 14th February. Pujya Bapu ji felt that, due to the blind imitation of Western culture there has been a steep rise in the incidences of alcoholism, suicide, and other immoral activities, especially among the youth during the last week of December. To rescue the youth from this debauchery and denigration, Pujya Bapu Ji came up with the idea of worshipping a sacred Tulsi plant (Holy basil). So, with a view to awaken the cultural pride of the India and to save the countrymen from mental slavery, in 2013, he initiated celebration of Tulsi poojan on 25th December.
strength. Salutations to her, salutations, salutations again and again.” This was because for the king, he thought -“he, being a king, possess willpower, monetary-power and authority. On having Bhava Shakti developed within, will be able to better take care of his subjects. That way, apart from the public being benefitted, even he will be emancipated.’ But Valmikiji wasn’t given this mantra. He was imparted the mantra – “Maraa- Maraa,” so that his Muladhara Chakra, i.e. the chakra at the base of the spinal column where base tendencies of kama (lust), hatred, aversion, etc. reside; gets struck and is transformed in turn. So that chakra of Valmikiji was transformed, because of which he could scale spiritual heights. The fact that ‘(Lord) Rama would descend and that before Rama-Rajya (i.e. The Kingdom of Rama), there would be Rama – Vanavasa (i.e. the exile of Rama), was something that he had already written beforehand. Such is the kind of genius that one can attain via mantra-japa (repetition of mantra) and meditation.
As per Pujya Bapuji’s ambrosial words, “Mantra are said to be of three types: Vedic, Sabri and Tantrik. Tantrik Mantra is something that I am neither aware of, nor do I recommend. Sabri Mantras are effective and give Mantra Siddhi (i.e. The Power and goodness of the presiding deity of the specific mantra are transferred to the sadhaka) but even more effective are Vedic Mantras, but it takes time to get mantra siddhi. Vedic mantras are salutary and beneficial in this world as well as in the other. Mantras Like “Om Namaha Shivaaya” etc. are categorized as Vedic Mantras. However, these mantras are imparted by Gurus per one’s eligibility, it adds another feather to latter’s cap. Divine sage Naradaji imparted the mantra – ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya’ to Dhruva and to Kings, he imparted the mantra‘या दे वी सर्वभत ू ेषु शक्तिरूपेण सन्सिथता। नमस्तस्यै।। नमस्तस्यै।। नमस्तस्यै नमो नमे।।‘ “To that Devi Who lives in all beings in the form of Shakti, power,
Types of Japa There are 3 types of japa as prescribed in the scriptures: (1) Vaachika - japa (i.e Verbal repetition of Mantra): Vaachika – japa is the kind wherein the name of the deity is pronounced verbally which is audible to others. (2) Upamsu – japa (i.e. Repittion in a whisper or humming): Upamsu – japa is the kind where the lips murmur while repeating the name of the deity, but the words are inaudible. (3) Maanasika – japa (i.e Mental repetition of a Mantra): Maanasika – japa is the kind where in neither the lips murmur, nor is there any audible sound; it keeps on repeating within. All the aforesaid japa-techniques have their own importance. Initially, by performing japa with elongated chanting, one is supposed to concentrate the mind; and the later, by means of Upamsujapa, one tends to become a bit introverted. Finally, the state, wherein the repetition of mantra goes on within your heart and you experience the same by being a ‘ witness,’ is that of a Maanasika – japa. In the

midst of japa, whenever the mind tends to wander higher thither, one should repeat Omkara, Hari Aum or God’s name verbally, with elongated chanting. Types of Japakas (i.e. performers of japa) There are four types of japakas. 1. Kanishtha – japaka (i.e. fourth class japaka): Those, who perform the japa with some expectation, in order to gain or attain something; are said to be Kanishtha – japakas. 2. Madhyama – japaka (i.e. third class japaka): Japakas, who, after being imparted with Guru mantra, repeat the mantra only for the prescribed number counting to 10 malas, just for the sake of completion of niyama (i.e. spiritual routine), are said to be belonging to Madhyama category. 3. Uttama – japaka (i.e.First class japakas): There are some japakas, who, apart from completing their niyama, repeat the mantra for 2-4 extra rounds of rosary, and at the times, even repeat the mantra (mentally) while walking around. These are supposed to be japakas of Uttama category. 4. Sarvottama – japaka (i.e. the best japaka): There are some japaks whose mere company, vicinity or even a glimpse triggers the japa in the mind of those around him. Such japakas
are said to be Sarvottama i.e. the best ones. Such great men, regardless of the level of the hundreds of the thousands of people that they are surrounding by; when performing a kirtan (a devotional song in which lines are sung by a leader and then repeated by a group) and bless people with their gracious glance, people start becoming introverted and developing good sense for progress in their spiritual journey. There are four different techniques, corresponding to four types of speech, to perform the japa of Vedic mantras: (1) Vaikhari (Articulate or loud repetition of a mantra): The japa, when performed aloud so that it is audible to others), is called Vaikhari Mantrajapa. (2) Madhyama (Repetitio of mantra with middle level of speech): The way of japa in which there is lip and tongue movement, but none can know which mantra the japaka (the person repeating mantra) is repeating. This is called ‘Madhyama Vani’. (3) Pashyanti (Perceptive or illlumined level of japa with a subtle mental speech in the throat, unaccompanied by lip movement, at the level of individual consciousness): The way of japa in which there is neither lip

In this, the japa happens wholeheartedly and our mind becomes engrossed in the meaning of the mantra being repeated. (4) Para (Japa with the subtle automatic speech in the heart, unaccompanied even by mental vibrations): When our thought-waves about to merge in the meaning of the mantra, we start experiencing Bliss while repeating the mantra
and the intellect starts getting steadied in the meaning of the Supreme Self: it is called Para Mantra – Japa Vedic mantras are so powerful, not only do they prevent the untimely death of japaka, but also protect the people accompanying the latter! Historical moment of spiritual integration of two ancient Nations Australia and India It is an utmost pride and a remarkable moment of connecting and integrating two ancient Nations Australia and India at a spiritual level that holds lots of similarities in their culture and traditions. It was a historical moment when Prakruthi Mysore Gururaj the first Indian to be welcomed and accepted into Gunggari Nation by one of the keepers of Indigenous Australian tradition and culture Aunty Peggy and Aunty Cathy whose traditional totem is the Emu (Nurinj). The ceremony was witnessed by many multicultural groups present at the Harmony Day event organised by Fiji Senior Citizens Association of Queensland. Before this, Djandi Lee Merenda Granddaughter of Aunty Peggy Tidyman was welcomed and accepted into Gunggari Women’s Ceremonial Circle in 2015 which was the first Gunggari women's ceremony held on country in over 70+years giving a young woman a traditional naming (Mirilani -thili) Shining Star. Djandi means Pretty flower. Only Traditional Elders can give a person a traditional name as they observe the young girl growing into womanhood and only Women Elders can invite other women into the Women’s Ceremonial Circle. Now after 6 years since Call: (07) 3192 5188

Ceremony is held at dusk as this is when the ancestors spirits are most active Djandi Lee Merenda, Granddaughter of Aunty Peggy Tidyman was welcomed by descent, Prakruthi Mysore Gururaj was welcomed based on spiritual connection. This is a very rare aspect that has happened in the history of Emu (Nurinj) traditional elders. This sacred ceremony conducted by the Aboriginal elders Aunty Peggy and Aunty Cathy whose traditional totem is the Emu (Nurinj), welcomed Prakruthi as their traditional family member
that marked as an acceptance of Prakruthi into Gunggari women's circle. Prakruthi was given a traditional name 'Bua Bua' which means butterfly and hence will be called the 'Butterfly lady' in the Gunggari culture. Aunty Cathy's granddaughter Shontara Rainbow was also present in the ceremony who performed the traditional dance with Aunty Peggy, Aunty Cathy and Prakruthi and assisted Aunty Peggy by bringing the 'ochre' to perform the ceremony. This amazing spiritual
journey started almost a year back when the Gunggari elders felt the spiritual connection with Prakruthi who resembled one of their family members. Once this was expressed in Dec 2020 and the ceremony day was decided to be on 20th March 2021 during Harmony Day celebration, it took Prakruthi weeks to prepare from familiarising the Gunggari values, hand painting the ceremony clothes and to learn the traditional dance. Prakruthi shares her experience being

unexplainable and has thoroughly enjoyed every moment as they got to explore many more commonalities between Indian and Indigenous Australian culture and traditions. On the day of the ceremony Prakruthi read an excerpt from an article 'Aboriginal Spirituality and Hindu Faith' written by Mr Surendra Prasad 's friend Mr Vijay Singhal as follows: "Australian aborigines claim to have lived here for over 50,000 years and as per a
study in 2013 at the Max Planck Institute by researchers, led by Irina Pugach suggested that Aboriginal genomes consist of up to 11% Indian DNA which is uniformly spread through Northern Australia indicating a substantial gene flow between Indian population and Northern Australians occurring around 4,230 years ago. Some changes in tool technology and food processing also appear in archaeological records around this time, suggesting some migration from India. Hindu faith is also one of the oldest living religions in the world. Hindus call it Sanatana Dharma – the Eternal Religion, ever existing. It predates recorded history. Both these cultures are very ancient and there are some basic similarities in their spiritual thinking. Some of the below similarities were explained on day 1. Smoking ceremony similar to Indian Havan/Yagna 2. Worshipping Mother Nature 3. Spirituality is cosmogony" Prakruthi feels blessed to get an opportunity to extend the spiritual connection between 2 nations along with Aunty Peggy, Aunty Cathy and all the people from various Multicultural background on this special occasion of harmony day.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99 CONTD. FROM PG 1 "The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss." It is understood that the Prince of Wales travelled from his home in Gloucestershire to visit his mother at Windsor Castle on Friday afternoon. Speaking at Downing Street, the prime minister said that the duke had "earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world". Meanwhile, Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said he "consistently put the interests of others ahead of his own and, in so doing, provided an outstanding example of Christian service". In tribute to the duke, Westminster Abbey began tolling its tenor bell once every 60 seconds at 18:00 BST. It rang out 99 times to honour each year of his life. Earlier, the flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast and a notice was posted on the gates to mark the duke's death. People placed floral tributes outside the palace, while hundreds visited Windsor Castle to pay their respects. However, the government urged the public not to gather or leave tributes at royal residences amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Royal Family has asked people to consider making a donation to a charity instead of leaving flowers in memory of the duke, and an online book of condolence has been launched on the official
another London hospital St Bartholomew's. This is a town that's seen many royal events over the years, both happy and sad. Today, it is one of quiet reflection. The sun has been shining down on Windsor Castle this afternoon, but the mood outside is understandably sombre. As locals heard of the duke's death, they turned up to leave flowers outside the entrance.
royal website for those who wish to send messages. A message on the website of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's non-profit organisation Archewell paid tribute to the "loving memory" of the Duke of Edinburgh, saying: "Thank you for your service... you will be greatly missed." From midday on Saturday,10th April, a 41-gun salute took place for Prince Philip in cities including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, as well as in Gibraltar and at sea from Royal Navy warships, the Ministry of Defence said. They were broadcast online and on television for the public to watch from home. The BBC's royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said it was "a moment of sadness" for the country and "most particularly, for the Queen losing her husband of 73 years - a bigger span of years than most of us can
imagine". He said Prince Philip had made "a huge contribution to the success of the Queen's reign", describing the duke as "utterly loyal in his belief in the importance of the role that the Queen was fulfilling - and in his duty to support her". "It was the importance of the solidity of that relationship, of their marriage, that was so crucial to the success of her reign," he added. A bank of photographers and cameramen were lined up around the growing number of tributes at Buckingham Palace on Friday afternoon, Rhea Varma, from Pimlico, pulled up to the gates on her bike to lay flowers and a note saying Rest in Peace Duke. She said the news was "super sad". To her, the duke was "the kind of stability that's so old-fashioned it's difficult to comprehend. He was a rock who brought
integrity." Adam Wharton-Ward, 36, also arrived to leave lilies by the palace gates. He is visiting London from his home in France but was so moved by the news, he wanted to "rally round" for the Queen's sake. "It's so sad. He's been with her for 73 years. If it wasn't for him who knows if she would have got through it," he said. The duke's appeal, he added, was that he was "almost normal with his gaffes". "Now that normality has gone," he said. The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. In March, the duke left King Edward VII's hospital in central London after a month-long stay for treatment. He was admitted on 16 February after feeling unwell, and later underwent a procedure for a preexisting heart condition at
One young boy, Oscar, came with his mother to lay flowers. He left a card which read: "Your Majesty, so sorry about hearing about your amazing husband." "It's really sad," another woman told us. "I just wanted him to get to 100," she said. The flag here hasn't been lowered to half-mast. That's because it's the Royal Standard which means the Queen is in residence. It's the one flag which remains at full mast. It was here that the duke spent his last weeks after being discharged from hospital. Inside the castle the Queen, now a
widow, is in mourning for her husband who has always been by her side. Prince Philip's funeral will take place at St George's Chapel, Windsor - but the arrangements have been amended in light of the coronavirus pandemic, the College of Arms said in a statement. It added that the funeral will not be a state funeral, and the duke will not lie in state. The duke will, however, lie at rest in Windsor Castle ahead of a funeral, the College of Arms said, "in line with custom and with His Royal Highness's wishes”. The statement said: "The funeral arrangements have been revised in view of the prevailing circumstances arising from the Covid-19 pandemic and it is regretfully requested that members of the public do not attempt to attend or participate in any of the events that make up the funeral." Prince Philip and the Queen had four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Their first son, the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, was born in 1948, followed by his sister, the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, in 1950, the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, in 1960 and the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, in 1964. Prince Philip was born on the Greek island of Corfu on 10 June 1921. His father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, a younger son of King George I of the Hellenes. His mother, Princess Alice, was a daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg and a greatgranddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Upset Hindus urge Warner Bros not to trivialize Lord Shiva in upcoming anime TV series Upset Hindus are urging
Warner Bros not to trivialize highly revered Hindu deity Lord Shiva in its upcoming anime television (TV) series “Record of Ragnarok”, calling it highly inappropriate. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that Lord Shiva was meant to be worshipped in temples and home shrines and not to be thrown around loosely or dragged around unnecessarily in anime TV series for mercantile greed. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that Hindu gods and goddesses were divine and entertainment companies were welcome to create projects about/around them showing their true depiction as mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. Inappropriately reimagining Hindu deities/ concepts/scriptures/symbols/ icons and redefining Hinduism for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the feelings of devotees. Rajan Zed urged Warner Media CEO Jason Kilar; WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group CEO Ann Sarnoff; and Warner Bros. Worldwide Home Entertainment President Jim Wuthrich; to seriously look into this issue before 22 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, April, 2021
launching its upcoming anime TV series production “Record of Ragnarok”, reportedly set to premiere in 2021. Zed stated that Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it hurt the adherents. Besides hurting the sentiments, any
misrepresentation created confusion among nonHindus about Hinduism. Insensitive handling of faith traditions sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols; Rajan Zed pointed out. Zed further said that Hindus welcomed entertainment world to immerse in Hinduism but taking it seriously and respectfully and not for refashioning Hinduism concepts and symbols for personal agendas. Attempts at distorting of Hindu gods and goddesses would be slighting of ancient Hindu traditions. He or other Hindu scholars would gladly help if industry needed any assistance in exploring Hinduism, Zed added. Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about 1.2 billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. No faith, larger or smaller, should be mishandled, Rajan Zed noted. According to reports, in this TV series directed by Masao Okubo; Lord Shiva (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki) would be shown participating in a one-on-one fighting match with humans.

In his message, Mr Morrison also thanked the AICCT trustee Vasan Srinivasan and other leaders in the community “who have given people hope, direction and confidence.” Calling it a ‘milestone moment for the Indian community', Karan Gandhok, one of the trustees of the Australia India Community Charitable Trust (AICCT), an organisation that sowed and nurtured the seeds of this long-standing dream of the Indian diaspora in Victoria, said, “alas, we have a home.” Mr Gandhok told SBS Punjabi that over the years and with the increasing number of Indian migrants who call Victoria home, a strong need was felt to have a dedicated facility that could act as a focal point for the community. “We saw this dream back in 2012, and now after years and a lot of effort of the trustees and the support of the federal government, that dream, and that need has been fulfilled. We now have a physical facility we can call home,” he said.
The centre, which is designed to meet the cultural and social needs of the nearly 200,000-strong local Indian community, will house a museum dedicated to Indian artefacts. “It will be the biggest museum of Indian artefacts outside of India. It will be dedicated to the late psychiatrist and respected member of our community, Dr Dinesh Parekh, who donated the artefacts, paintings and stamps and called Melbourne home for almost 50 years. He, unfortunately, passed away last month,” Mr Gandhok said. “So, the first floor will house the museum, and the community centre will be on the ground floor which will be capacitated to host community functions and marriages, and we will also have space for badminton court, tennis tables and other board games.” Today's inaugural event was also attended by former Victorian Liberal leader Matthew Guy and Consul General of India in Melbourne, Raj Kumar, among other political representatives and members of the Indian community. Mr Gandhok signalled that they are expecting more funding from the state government in times to come.

THE HISTORY OF RAMADAN By ML. M NAWAAZ ASHARFI It is believed that the Quran was
first revealed to Muhammad during the month of Ramadan. The historical records shows that first revelation was sent down on Laylat al-Qadr (the night of Power) which is one of the five odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. According to the Hadiths the entire Quran was ‘sent’ during Ramadan. The first evening of Ramadan In many places around the world Muslims will be looking to the heavens this evening. They will be interested in knowing if they will be able to see the crescent moon. If it is visible this will be the signal for the beginning of the month of Ramadan. (In most countries religious authorities will make a proclamation concerning the beginning of Ramadan). No fasting will take place till the next morning. Muslims will rise early to eat their breakfast before the day begins. Afterwards they will not have anything else to eat or drink till nightfall. This will be their daily experience during the next 30 days. Fasting – Ramadan Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of the religion of Islam and one of the highest forms of Islamic worship. Abstinence from earthly pleasures and curbing evil intentions and desires is regarded as an act of obedience and submission to God as well as an atonement for sins, errors, and mistakes. Called Ramadan (or Ramazan), Muslims fast during this holy month from the moment when it first starts to get light until sunset. Muslims fast as an act of faith and worship towards Allah, seeking to suppress their desires and increase their spiritual piety. Fasting together as a worldwide community – Ummah – affirms the brotherhood and equality of man before Allah. Islamic Calendar The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle. The month of Ramadan is the ninth month and begins with a combination of the sighting of the new moon and astronomical calculations. The exact time of Ramadan sometimes varies from place to place as some rely heavily on the moon sightings while others depend on science. An Imam (Muslim holy man) will declare the exact time of Ramadan just prior to its commencement. The fasting period ends upon the sighting of the next new moon, which occurs after 29 or 30 days. The lunar cycle changes each year. For example, one year Ramadan was from the 22 August-20 September, but the year before the dates for Ramadan were 01-30 September. The Meaning of Ramadan The name Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word ramida or ar-ramad, denoting intense scorching heat and dryness, especially the ground. From the same word there is ramdaa, meaning ‘sunbaked sand’ and the famous proverb Kal Mustajeer minar ramadaa binnar – to jump out of the frying pan into the fire. Some say it is so called because Ramadan scorches out the sins with good deeds, as the sun burns the ground. Emotions of Ramadan Ramadan brings out a special
feeling of emotional excitement and religious zeal among Muslims of all ages. Though fasting is mandatory only for adults, children as young as eight willingly observe fasting with their elders. Children look forward to the excitement of sighting the moon and eating special meals with their families. Adults appreciate the opportunity to double their rewards from God and seek forgiveness for past sins. As Ramadan emphasizes Muslim brotherhood and community all feel a particular closeness. Muslims have to change their whole physical and emotional selves during this 30 long days of fasting. A typical day of fasting begins with getting up early, around 4:30a.m. and sharing a meal called Sahur together before the fast begins at dawn, about 5:10a.m. As dawn breaks, the first of five daily prayers, Fajr, is offered. As the day proceeds, fasting Muslims are constantly bombarded with messages from their stomachs that it is time for breakfast, snack, lunch, and so on. And each time, Muslims remind themselves that they are fasting for the sole purpose of pleasing Allah and seeking his mercy. They offer the second and third prayers during early and late afternoon, respectively. Fasting helps one to experience how a hungry person feels and what it is like to have an empty stomach. It teaches one to share the sufferings of the less fortunate. Muslims believe that fasting leads one to appreciate the bounties of Allah, which are usually taken for granted – until they are missed! Throughout the day Muslims are encouraged to go out of their way to help the needy, both financially and emotionally. Some believe that a reward earned during this month is multiplied 70 times and more. For this reason, Ramadan is also known as the month of charity and generosity. To a Muslim, fasting not only means abstaining from food, but also refraining from all vice and evils committed consciously or unconsciously. It is believed that if one volunteers to refrain from lawful foods and intimacy, they will be in a better position to avoid unlawful things and acts during the rest of the year. Breaking The Daily Fast The fast is broken at sunset. The Prophet Muhammad recommended breaking the fast with dates. Muslims are urged to invite others to break the fast with them. These gatherings are called Iftar parties. Just after breaking the fast, and before dinner, Muslims offer the fourth of the five daily prayers, which is called the Maghrib prayer. After dinner, Muslims go to their houses of worship, called Mosques, to offer the Isha prayer, which is the last of the five daily prayers. The day ends with a special voluntary prayer, the Taraweeh, offered by the congregation reciting the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam. Benefits of the first 10 days of Ramadan ‘This is a month, the first part of which brings Allah’s Mercy, the middle of which brings Allah’s forgiveness and the last part of which brings emancipation from hellfire’. (Bukhari) Jumping straight into doing acts of worship can be difficult

to keep up if we don’t have a plan. Realising that Ramadan is a marathon rather than a sprint will allow us to prepare accordingly and to effectively get the most out of this blessed month. We’re all too familiar with that struggle of throwing ourselves head first into the swing of Ramadan at the beginning, losing momentum during the middle, and battling to keep up by the end. Here’s a quick guide to maintaining a strong and steady pace to last us through the whole month of Ramadan. The first ten days are the days of Mercy. Here are 10 easy steps in seeking Allah’s mercy on these days. 1. Plenty of dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and du’a Reciting Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise) one hundred times a day will wipe away sins even if they are equal to the extent of the ocean. This can easily be broken down to fit our busy Ramadan schedules by reciting it ten times before and after our five daily prayers. 2. Reciting the holy Qur’an Completing the Qur’an might seem overwhelming at the beginning, but breaking it down can really help. Try reading 4.5 pages after every prayer. By the end of Ramadan, you will have completed the whole Qur’an! 3. Renew intentions Fasting is a mercy in itself. Constantly renewing your intentions will keep up morale and motivation. Don’t forget to remind yourself that you are fasting for the sake of Allah and not simply starving yourself. In sha’ Allah this should keep you steadfast. 4. Practice being merciful Allah says that those who are merciful will be shown mercy, so go that extra mile for your family, neighbours and friends this month. Be extra patient with your siblings and carry out simple acts of kindness such as offering your seat on the bus. 5. Giving charity A lot of people wait for the reward of the last ten days, but it is better not to delay charity even if that means giving less then you intended at the beginning so you can also catch the reward of the last days. Allah loves those who help the ones in need and in giving charity you help your brother and yourself. There is more reward in giving charity secretly but there is still plenty of reward in giving it openly, ‘If you disclose your Sadaqah, it is well; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is better for you’. (Qur’an 2:271) 6. Practising the Sunnah Plan your Sahur meal to encourage yourself to wake up in the early hours of the morning, even if it is just to have an odd number of dates and some milk. The Prophet (saw) said, ‘There are blessings in this meal’. It is what distinguishes our fasts from those of the People of the Book. 7. Looking after your neighbours The last ten days are mostly spent in seclusion as people try to get closer to Allah during these days. Spending time with your fellow brothers and sisters is more
convenient during the beginning of Ramadan, but don’t forget to be there for friends and loved ones. Volunteering at your local mosque or something as simple as helping your mother cook the Iftar meal is a great way of showing kindness to others. Remember, Sadaqah starts in the home and with family and friends. 8. Seeking forgiveness Ramadan is one of the biggest iman boosters of the year. It’s the perfect time for seeking forgiveness from Allah and also from our brothers and sisters who we may have wronged. This is the ideal time for repairing and strengthening relationships. Allah loves those who love each other for his sake. 9. Voluntary prayers Ramadan is an ideal time to start adding the voluntary nafl prayers. It is also great practice for endurance when it comes to the night (Tahajjud) and Taraweeh prayers. 10. Praying in congregation It was narrated by Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet (saw) said,“Prayer in congregation is superior to prayer alone by twenty-seven degrees”’. (Muslim) This means men should endeavour to attend the masjid for the five obligatory prayer as well as Taraweeh. In sha’ Allah if we remain consistent, praying in congregation will become a habit even after Ramadan. As for women, it is fine to pray in the home, but one can always form a congregation with family and friends. Forgiveness: The second ten of Ramadan Our master, the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned in hadith that Ramadan has three parts: the first 10 days are mercy (rahmah) from Allah, Most High, the middle 10 days are forgiveness (maghfirah) from Allah, Most High, and the last 10 days are emancipation from the Hellfire . What we normally witness at the mosques is that the first few days of Ramadan, we have a surge of people. This lasts till the 4, 5th of Ramadan and then it starts to dip again. Many of us have it in us that in the beginning of Ramadan, we have a lot of jazba and passion, but then it begins to dip and fade in the middle and all of a sudden in the last 10 days, the last ashrah, in search of the Night of Power (Laila tul Qadr) and in seclusion in the mosque (‘itekaaf ) we have a surge again. Now, it’s strange when we think of this that the middle 10 days are the days of maghfirah from Allah, Most High. We should actually be increasing in our passion in these middle 10 days. And that is one way to understand how Allah, Most High, Has put this rahmah in the first 10 days i.e. out of His Mercy Allah, Most High, allowed us to fast although we weren’t worthy of such an ibadah . In the first 10 days, Allah, Most High, out of His Mercy let us increase in our good works (a‘amaal), in our worship (ibadaat) although we weren’t worthy of such an honour and in the first 10 days, out of His Mercy, Allah, Most High, Enabled us to do those a’amaal that may now be a means of earning His maghfirah. That is really what the whole month of Ramadan is; the whole month of Ramadan is just another occasion, just an “excuse”
for Allah, Most High, to forgive our sins. You just spent the first 10 days of Ramadan earning a reason for Allah, Most High, to forgive us – 10 days of fasting; 10 days of Taraweeh; and (for the vast majority of us) 10 days of staying away from gross and manifest and repugnant sin . Allah, Most High, is such an incredibly Merciful Being that that servant and slave of His, who lives his entire life as a sinner, if for only 10 days he lives like a servant and even that was only due to the Mercy of Allah, Most High, but nonetheless he lived like a servant and Allah, Most High, Has opened these middle 10 days for maghfirah. Now Allah, Most High, increases the forgiveness! Every day and every night [in these middle 10 days] Allah, Most High, will take out thousands and thousands of His slaves from the destiny of Hellfire and will be now admitted into Jannah. The whole apparatus of Ramadan that we have been talking about is for this reason i.e. for maghfirah: 4Closing the doors of Jahannum; opening the doors of Jannah 4Closing and binding all of the Shayateen 4Enabling us to fast to discipline our Nafs 4Putting us in a state of ibadat for 14, 15 hours of the day 4Telling us to pray Taraweeh prayers, extra at night All of this, in order to forgive us. So, it behoves us now, rather than letting ourselves dip rather than lapsing, that we should enter these middle 10 days with a renewed passion and the passion that we should have in these 10 days is seeking the forgiveness of Allah, Most High. That is why Allah, Most High, has said in the Qur’ane-Karim: [2:160] Allah, Most High, Says about Himself that I am At-Tawwaab and I (Allah, Most High) am Ar-Rahim First meaning of At-Tawwab: refers to that being who accepts the Taubah of the people who turn unto Him. Taubah means to turn in repentance to Allah, Most High; to Turn away from sin and towards Allah, Most High; to turn away from ignorance, towards ‘ilm; to turn away from misguidance, to being rightly guided; to turn away from Ghaflah -being absent minded-, towards Dhikr-remembrance of Allah; to turn away from sins, back to obedience; to turn away from all of ghair-ullah, towards Allah, Most High. And At-tawwab means that Allah, Most High, Accepts such a person’s Taubah. Second meaning of AtTawwab: is related to us that we are At-Taaib that we are returning to Allah, Most High. At-Tawwab means that Allah, Most High, is infinitely turning towards us. Just like the person who makes Taubah turns towards Allah, Most High, Allah, Most High’s Calling Himself At-Tawwab means that He is infinitely eternally turning towards that person who turns towards Him. Ramadan is a month of fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the world. Over the centuries Ramadan has retained its passionate spiritual meaning. The word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic word for “Parched Thirst” and “Sun-Baked Ground.” It is meaningful of the hunger
and thirst felt by those who spend the month in fasting and get benefits of fasting in the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice. Each year Muslims spend the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing a community wide fast. The fast of the month of Ramadan considered one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims who are physically able to required to fast each day of the entire month from sunrise to sunset. The month of Ramadan lasts 29 to 30 days depending on moon sighting and according to narration; Allah Almighty divides the Holy month of Ramadan into three Stages that’s known as Ashrah of Ramadan. Ashrah of Ramadaan First Part Reflects Mercy of Allah (Rehmah) Second Part Reflects Forgiveness of Allah (Maghfirah) Third Part Reflects Safety from the Hell (Nijat) The Holy Prophet Muhammad said: It (Ramadan) is the month, whose beginning is mercy, its middle, forgiveness and its end, emancipation from the fire (of hell). No doubt, the month of Ramadan is full of blessings, mercy and forgiveness. It’s the best opportunity for all the Muslims to collect more blessings of Allah and pray for their forgiveness and to be saved from the Hell fire. First Ashrah of Ramadan Mercy First ten days of Ramadan are the days of Mercy and blessing and every Muslim must seek the Mercy and Blessings of Almighty Allah. It’s a special verse that usually recites the Muslims in first ten days. The Dua for the first Ashra is: Translation: “O! My Lord forgives and have Mercy and You are the Best of Merciful” Second Ashrah of Ramadan Forgiveness Second ten days of Ramadan day 11th to, day 20th consists of the second Ashra and its called Ashra or forgiveness. Muslims must seek for the forgiveness of Allah Almighty and regret for all their sins. The Dua for second Ashra is: Translation: “I ask forgiveness of my sins from Allah who is my Lord and I turn towards Him.” Third Ashrah of Ramadan Safety Third Ashra starts from 21st Ramadan and ends 29th or 30th Ramadan according to the moon. Third Ashra is known as Safety from the Hell it means Nijat. In the end of Ramadan is about seeking in Allah Almighty from Hellfire. Every Muslim must pray that from the safety of Hell fire. The Last Ashra is very important and superior. In this Ashra Lailatul Qadar also falls and many Muslims also practice Aitkaf (seclusion for prayers) in this Ashra and try to maximize their prayers. Stated in Quran: “We sent it (Quran) down on a blessed Night. Verily,We are ever warning. Therein (in that Night) is decreed every matter of ordainment. Amran (i.e. a command or this Quran or His Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messenger) (As) a Mercy from your Lord.” [Quran 44: 3-6] Dua of third Ashra is: Translation: “I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin I committed”
MERAJUN NABI (MIRACULOUS JOURNEY) Continued from previous month Some of the Things witnessed during Mi'raaj Hadrat Moosa (Alaihis salaam) performs Salaah in his Grave It is related by Hadrat Anas (Radiallahu anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "On the night in which I was taken on the journey, I passed by Moosa (Alaihis salaam) and he was performing salaah in his grave." (Sahih Muslim Pg.268 Vol.1) People Scraping their Chests with their Fingernails Anas (Radiallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "When I was taken up during the Me'raaj, I passed by people who had fingernails of copper and they were raking their own faces and chests with them. I asked Jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) who they were and he replied that they were those who used to eat the flesh of others (i.e. slandered them) and attacked their reputations." (Abu Dawood, in Mishkaat p.249) Angels Emphasize the Importance of Cupping Hadrat Abdullah bin Mas'ood (Radiallahu anhu) narrates: "Among the things described by Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) about the journey of Mi'raaj was that every group of Angels he passed by, urged him to instruct his ummah to practise cupping." (Mishkaatul Masaabih p.389 from Tirmizi and Ibn Maajah) In the past, the custom of

cupping was very much in vogue among the Arabs. It is a way of letting out bad and excess blood from the body and a sovereign remedy for many diseases. People have abandoned having faith in this practice today. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) used to have his head and the area between his shoulders cupped. (lbid) People's Heads Crushed with Rocks Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) passed by another group of people whose heads were being crushed with boulders. After becoming smashed, their heads would again resume their original shape, only to be crushed again. This process would continue ceaselessly. When he asked jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) who they were, he replied that they were those people who were neglectful of their salaah. During the time of salaah, they would remain asleep. The Despicable State of those who withhold their Zakaah Then he passed by another group of people whose private parts, from the front and behind, were wrapped in rags and they were grazing like camels and cattle. They were eating Daree' (a thorny plant of the fire of Jahannam) and Zaqqoom (a most bitter and foul smelling tree growing at the bottom of Jahannam) and the smouldering stones of Jahannam. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) asked who these people were and Jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) replied, "They are those who do not discharge the zakaah of their wealth."
A Person Carrying a huge bundle of wood Then, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) passed by a man who was struggling to carry a very large bundle of wood which he was unable to bear, yet he wanted to carry even more. When Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) asked who he was, Jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) replied that this was the person who had been a trustee of people's possessions, but he had failed to discharge the trust. And yet, he was eager and willing to take on more of the things of people in trust. The Fragrance of Jannah Then Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) reached a valley from which a very beautiful fragrance emanated. The smell was of musk and it possessed a voice. Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) asked, "What is this?" Jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) replied that it is the voice of Jannah saying, "O My Lord! Bring to me those people who have been destined to stay in me, and fulfill your promise."
wassallam) , Jibraeel(Alaihis salaam) recited the following words: " Aoozu biwajhil laahil kareem wabi kaleematil laahit-taam-maatilati la-yu-jaa-wizu-hunna barrun wala-fa-jir. Wa-min sharri mayanzilu minas-samaa. Wa-sharri maa-ya'ruju fie-haa, Wa-sharri maa-dha-ra-a fil-ardi, Wa-sharri maa-yakh-ruju min-haa. Wa-min fita-nil-layli wan-nahaar. Wa-min tawaa-ri-qil-layli wan-nahaar, illa taa-ri-qann yat-ruq bi-khair. YaRahmaan." Salaams from Hazrat Ibrahim (alaiyhis salaam) to the Ummah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (Radiallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "On the night of Mi'raj, I met Hazrat Ibraheem (alaiyhis salaam) and he said to me, O Muhammad! Convey my salaam to your Ummah and inform them that undoubtedly the soil of Jannah is pure, its water is sweet, its ground is barren and its plants are: "Subhanallahi walhamdulillahi wala ilaha illallaahu wallaahu akbar."
A shaitaan Trails Them In the Muatta of Imaam Maalik (Rahmatullahi alaih), there is a Hadith narrated by Yahya bin Sa'eed, that on the night of Mi'raaj, Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) saw a rebellious jinn pursuing him with a flame of fire. Whenever he would turn (to the right or left), he would catch sight of this Jinn. Jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) said, "Should I not teach you some words which, if recited, will extinguish this fire and cause him(the Jinn) to fall down on his face. Upon request of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi
TWO OTHER GIFTS BESIDES SALAAH On the night of Mi'raaj, apart from the gift of salaah and the promised reward of fifty salaah in lieu of five, among other bounties of Allah is the: Revelation of the last few verses of Surah Al Baqarah (i.e. from " Aamanar-rasoolu bimaa un-zila ilayhi mir-rab-bihee wal-mu'-minoon....till the end). Sins forgiven of the ummah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam): At the same time, it was also announced that the

major sins of those in the ummah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) who do not ascribe partners with Allah will be forgiven. (Sahih Muslim p. 97 Vol. 1). This means that they will not suffer eternal punishment on account of their major sins, but will instead be pardoned either through tawba (sincere repentance) and istighfaar (seeking the forgiveness of Allah), or after first being punished for their sins. (An Nawawi). What is the Buraaq and what were its features? The name "Buraaq" is derived from the word "bareeq" which means "white" in Arabic. According to another view, its origin lies in the word "barq " which means "light", the speed of which is well-known; hence the name Buraaq. From the narrations of Hadith, it is clear that before Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam), other Prophets too had travelled upon it. For instance, Imaam Baihaqi relates in his Dalaa-ilun Nubuwwah (p.390 vol.2) that Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said: "Other Prophets used to ride on it before me." The Prancing of the Buraaq in excitement and the reason for it In the Sunan of Tirmizi, on the commentary of Surah Al lsraa, it is narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "On the night of my journey, when the Buraaq was brought before me in a bridled and saddled state, it began to prance about. Jibraeel said to it, 'How dare you prance before Muhammad? Nobody more honoured and beloved to Allah than Muhammad has ever ridden on your back before him.' When it heard this, the Buraaq immediately
began to perspire heavily (and became submissive)." It is mentioned in Dalaailun Nubuwwah that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, "No sooner did the Buraaq begin to prance, Jibraeel twisted its ears and helped me mount it. (Dalaailun Nubuwwah (p.355 vol.2)". In some narrations, it is mentioned that when Nabi (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam), reached Baitul Maqdis, Jibraeel (Alaihis salaam) carved a hole in the wall with his fingers and tied the Buraaq around it." (Ibn Katheer) The reason for the excitement of the Buraaq Some scholars believe that the Buraaq was excited because it was being used after a long time. Even during the period of Fatrah (i.e. the period in between the advent of Jesus-Eesa (Alaihis salaam) and Rasulullah (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) nobody had ridden upon it. It was now overjoyed at this newly-found privilege. (Fathul Baari Pg.207 Vol.7). Other scholars believe it to be on account of its sense of pride and ecstasy at the prospect of being honoured with the Last and the Noblest of all Prophets (sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam). This was similar to the occasion when Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam), accompanied by Hadrat Abu Bakr, Hadrat Umar and Hadrat Usmaan (Radiallahu anhum) were on Mount Thabeer when it began to shudder. "Be still!" he ordered the mountain, 'for standing upon you is a Nabi, a Siddeeq, and two Martyrs." (Mishkaat p.562 from Tirmizi and Nasaee) To be continued on next month

’Time on market’ (TOM) is simply the middle number of days between when a property is first listed for sale and the contractdate. The rate of vendor discounting is the median difference between the original listing price and the final selling price. The statistics are calculated across results received by CoreLogic over the past week and include properties transacted over the past four weeks. The data is based on private treaty sales only and records without a valid sale price have been excluded from the vendor discount analysis. The analysis also excludes results where there are less than 10 observations.

The 11th round of Corps Commander-level talks took place at the Chushul border point on the Indian side of the LAC in eastern Ladakh. The parleys began at around 10:30 AM and ended at 11:30 PM.
The border standoff between the armies of India and China erupted on May 5 last following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas in eastern Ladakh and both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed withdrawal of troops and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February in line with an agreement on disengagement. India has been insisting that a resolution of outstanding issues including in Depsang, Hot Springs and Gogra is essential for overall ties between the two countries.
Rapid antigen tests have been conducted in Delhi to date. On Friday, Delhi recorded 8,521 new cases of Covid-19. This was the highest single-day tally of fresh cases of infection in the national capital since the beginning of this year. Apart from Delhi, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has identified 9 states that account for 82.82 per cent of the new infections reported on Saturday.
Karnataka is all set for night curfew from today— aimed to contain the spread of coronavirus, while only essential services, patients and passengers would be allowed to ply. The 11-day 'corona curfew' will come into effect in some districts of Karnataka, including the state capital, from Saturday night. The state government had announced night curfew between 10pm and 5am every day from April 10 to 20 in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Tumakuru, UdupiManipal cities. This apart, the curfew will be in place in other prominent towns and district headquarters, the government said. The police have made elaborate arrangements to
ensure compliance of the rules at night. In Bengaluru, police commissioner Kamal Pant told reporters that vehicles providing essential services, patients and their relatives will be allowed to travel at night. Besides, home delivery, e-commerce and the transportation of essential goods such as vegetables and food commodities for sale in the morning will be allowed in the night. "Passengers coming to and going from Bengaluru
are also allowed to travel. They must carry with them travel documents," Pant said. Companies that operate at night can continue to function, but their employees have to report to work before 10pm. "We will shut the city in the night," Pant said. Asked about issuing special passes for vehicular movement, the commissioner said there is no question of issuing passes. He warned that those violating the norms will be booked under the Epidemic Act. The decision to impose night curfew was taken due to surging coronavirus cases in the state at an alarming proportion. The state reported 7,955 fresh Covid cases and 46 fatalities on Friday alone.
Maharashtra reports 55,411 new Covid-19 cases, 309 deaths
Uddhav Thackeray says difficult to trace Covid-19 in second wave. Then explains Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray indicated on Saturday that a strict lockdown will be imposed in the state amid the alarming rise in Covid-19 cases. Thackeray also pointed out that the challenge to break the transmission of coronavirus this year, in contrast with the last year's wave of infections, comes with a setback. "Last year during the lockdown, people were at home so it wasn't difficult to trace infections. Since everything is open now it is
practically very difficult to trace people. The Centre must understand this," Thackeray said, reported news agency ANI. Thackeray said that people will have to go through some hardships. "On the one hand there is a public sentiment but on the other hand, there is an outbreak of coronavirus… If you want to win this battle you have to go through some hardships," a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) quoted him as saying. FOCUS ON FIJI 2020 report on human rights in Fiji issued by the US State Dept is selective in its treatment of facts – Raj
Director of the Human Rights and AntiDiscrimination Commission Ashwin Raj says the 2020 report on human rights in Fiji issued by the US State Department is perfunctory, scant in its interpretation and deconstruction of the law, saturated with generalisations and selective in its treatment of facts. Raj says while the report impugns independent institutions like the judiciary and those responsible for the protection, promotion and preservation of human rights, there was neither any consultations with the state and independent institutions including the Human Rights and AntiDiscrimination Commission in the formulation of this report nor any ethic of constructive engagement over the years, as far as the Commission is concerned, in relation to human rights in Fiji. Raj further says this does not mean that Fiji does not have any human rights challenges, we certainly do. The Commission Director says they include but by no means limited to sexual and gender-based violence, torture and brutality at the hands of law enforcement agencies, rights of arrested and detained persons, racial and religious intolerance and hate speech, the need for constructive discussions on the right to peaceful assembly and the imperatives of public order and national security, the existential threat of climate change and the advent of COVID-19 and its attendant human rights challenges, and the need to ensure that the national human rights institution is compliant with the Paris Principles but Fiji continues to subject itself to scrutiny both domestically and at the highest human rights forums internationally, the most recent being the third cycle of its Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Raj adds curiously the US State Department Report does not even make a cursory reference to Fiji’s Universal Periodic Review almost giving an impression that there is no accountability for human rights violations in Fiji, nor does it document Fiji’s human rights achievements. Raj says just like the United States, Fiji is equally concerned with torture and other cruel,
The
inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment and we have acknowledged this at home and internationally and the need for accountability without impunity for acts of violations of human rights. He says the claims about carte blanche immunity extended to security forces, however, is a distortion of the law and a complete misrepresentation of section 157 of the Fijian Constitution giving an impression that this provision is still being invoked in present day cases of torture and brutality to exonerate security forces. Raj also says the US human rights record is hardly worthy of emulation but Fiji does not occupy an indomitable moral plateau with the compulsion to ritualistically produce a report on them every year. Raj says the US is a country that until recently had turned its back on the Paris Climate Agreement, had withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council, placed sanctions against the International Criminal Court and has yet to ratify all core international human rights instruments. He says these are the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women, International Convention on the Protection, Convention on the Rights of the Child, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers, and Members of Their Families, International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Raj further says it has yet to establish an independent national human rights institution adding that at the third cycle of its Universal Periodic Review, member states called on the USA to establish a moratorium on death penalty, to put an end to life without parole sentence for juveniles, an end to arbitrary and indefinite detention, illegal and secret detention facilities, overcrowding in prisons, police violence, use of excessive force and torture, racial profiling by law enforcement agencies, killing of civilians in military operations, gun violence, racism, extremism, xenophobia and hate speech directed at immigrants and asylum seekers, the adoption of punitive measures such as the incarceration of migrants and separation of migrant children from their parents to deter irregular entry and retrogressive policies that inhibit comprehensive and universal access to voluntary sexual and reproductive health services.

There is a growing voice of Islamic scholars that have concluded that one can get vaccinated in the month of Ramadan - Koya Minister for Commerce, Faiyaz Koya says there is a growing voice of Islamic scholars that have concluded that one can get vaccinated in the month of Ramadan because vaccines do not nourish the body. Muslims fast during the holy month of Ramadan before celebrating Eid. Ramadan is expected to begin next Wednesday. Speaking at the opening of the Masjid Hanifa in Sonaisali, Nadi Koya is encouraging everyone to get vaccinated as soon as it is available.
The Minister says during the last fasting season, mosques and other places of worship were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with over a year of no
community transmission of the virus, Fiji is truly blessed to have the freedom to gather. He says while the government has progressively taken tremendous, and cautious steps to recovery, Fijians also play a very big role in this journey. Koya adds with the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccines, it is critically important for everyone to register for them and put Fiji in a stronger position to return to normalcy and recovery. He says during this challenging time, people look
for strength and inspiration from their spiritual and cultural roots. He adds that people must welcome the opportunity to humble themselves, learn from others during this time, celebrate their religious identity, but also open their minds to the possibilities of living and co-existing harmoniously, irrespective of colour, religion or status. Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar and Minister for Agriculture, Doctor Mahendra Reddy were also present for the opening of the mosque.

One of the busiest stars in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar recently finished a well-deserved holiday and instantly got back to work. The star wrapped up filming for Atrangi Re over the weekend and jumped straight into this new project, which will certainly be a unique one for the actor.
Akshay Kumar will play an archaeologist in the film and this new look was inspired by several Indian and international professional archaeologists
who work in the field. Sporting a stylish look, Akshay Kumar gave fans the first glimpse of what to expect. The photo shows him wearing a pair of glasses,

Ajay Devgn puts on hold the final schedule of MayDay owing to rising COVID-19 cases Ajay Devgn's directorial venture MayDay went on floors in December. Despite the trying times, Devgn successfully managed to shoot major portions of the film. However, the actor-director is facing some serious challenges just ahead of the last leg of the film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh. Initially, the team was to head to Doha for a three day schedule towards the end of April. However, owing to the massive surge
in COVID-19 cases, Devgn has decided to hold off the Doha schedule keeping the safety of his crew in mind.
MayDay narrates the story of a 2015 incident when a Doha-Kochi flight had a close shave due to
poor visibility and had to be diverted to another airport in south India. Reportedly, the film has to be shot at various airports across India. But it was not possible due to the pandemic and Devgn instead built airport sets in Hyderabad to film the required portions. As per reports, for the final leg of the shoot, Devgn was to fly to Qatar with a small crew and shoot in a bio bubble. However, with rising cases, Devgn has decided to put it on hold.
“Maidaan will feature football players from the world over playing” – Amit Sharma “Badhaai Ho, you have tested Negative,” I punjoked with filmmaker Amit Sharma whose new ambitious venture Maidaan promises to do for football what Lagaan did for cricket and Chak De for hockey. Amit who has now fully recovered from Covid laughs nervously. “The idea is to do my best. We have invited football players from the all across the world to come and play in our matches for Maidaan: Japan, South Korea, France, and Thailand… there
is some problem getting Australian players to come to India because the country is under lockdown.”
A series of matches will now be shot for Maidaan showing India playing football with different countries. Informs Amit, “In fact the players from Thailand are already here .They have been waiting for me to recover from Covid. We start shooting them from April 4. We then go on to shoot matches with the other countries with a break between every match. It is a tough schedule. We were supposed to start shooting from March 16.
But then who we would have thought I would be felled with Covid like this?” Amit says the football matches will be shot on an international scale. “There will be no compromise on quality. We are trying to make a film that we hope India will be proud of. When I directed Badhaai Ho I never set out to make something that would have such an impact on the audience. I am so glad all the actors in Badhaai Ho specially Neenaji (Gupta) benefited from it.”
Satish Kaul succumbs to Covid-19; passes away at the age of 73 Not many remember Satish Kaul as Rehana Sultan’s handsome lover in the 1973 drama Prem Parbat where he played the sexed-up forest ranger Rehana ran to for sex when her aged husband Nana Palsikar was asleep. It was a bold film and Satish got lead roles in offbeat Hindi films like Nek Parveen, Mere Sartaj, and Ang Se Ang Laga Le. Like most failed lead actors Satish soon switched to supporting roles in big budget films like Shiva ka Insaaf and Inaam Dus Hazaar. He had insignificant roles in two Pahlaj Nihalani productions Ilzaam and Aag Hi Aag.
Pahlajji remembers Satish as “hard working, friendly, hungry for work, always eager to face the camera, always wondering where the next meal would come from.” Bitter and frustrated for the lack of work in Hindi cinema, Satish moved to Punjabi cinema where he had a relatively more successful innings with films like Jatt Punjabi, Lacchi and Rano. He was labelled the ‘Amitabh Bachchan Of Punjabi cinema’. Not that it helped sustain his

career. When roles in Punjab too began to dry up Satish moved to Indian television. He played small parts on television. He was seen in Vikram-Vetal and Mahabharat. In recent years his financial condition went from bad to worse. With no family of his own (his wife apparently divorced him and left the country) Satish was forced to live in a charity home in Ludhiana. He died penniless in a hospital in Ludhiana, hungry for work, hungry for love,
hungry for dignity. And just hungry. No money for food. Satish’s final years are a lesson to all actors and technicians in Indian cinema who have no savings to fall back on during hard times. I remember the actress Vimi of the 1970s, a grand B R Chopra discovery who was launched with fanfare in the hit Humraaz. Soon her career floundered and flopped. With no money and career she drank herself to death. Her corpse had to be loaded on a hand cart to be taken to the crematorium. Satish Kaul was a bit less unfortunate.
his neck certainly oozed sophistication too! Joining Akshay Kumar in Ram Setu, will be Jacqueline Fernandez and Nushrratt Bharuccha, who will star as the film’s lead actresses. The production for Ram Setu will follow strict protocols to ensure the safety of all those involved with the film. This includes regular health checks to mitigate any COVID-19 risks. Known for always interacting with his fans, Akshay Kumar was keen to know what they thought of this look. Sharing this post with his 100M+ followers:
"The journey of making one of the most special films for me begins today. #RamSetu shooting begins! Playing an archaeologist in the film. Would love to hear your thoughts on the look? It always matters to me." Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of Ram Setu since Akshay Kumar gave them a first glimpse on Diwali last year! Although a release date is yet to be announced, fans will still get to enjoy seeing Akshay Kumar in action, with films such as Sooryavanshi, Prithviraj and Bell Bottom on the horizon.
R Madhavan is better, looks forward to resuming work star-actor R Madhavan, quarantined at home with Covid, can’t wait to get back to work. “Just a few more days to go, then I can get back to working on Rocketry,” says Madhavan about the film on the life of NASA scientist Nambi Narayanan which has caught PM Narendra Modiji’s attention. Describing with unalloyed joy his meeting with PM Modi where Maddy apprised our Prime Minister on the Nambi Narayanan bio-pic’s progress, Madhavan says, “It is all God’s grace. I’ve given this project my blood sweat and tears for more than five years. To now have our Prime Minister himself express an interest in the project is a

blessing. I hope I don’t let the PM and our nation down.” About getting back to normal life after the Covid quarantine Maddy says, “I am feeling much better now. I have just a bit of a cough. I will get myself tested in a couple of days. But I should be fine.”
Ranvir Shorey to return as Salman Khan’s trusted aide in Tiger 3
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger 3 has already gone on floors. While the third instalment of the Tiger franchise will see a new face with Emraan Hashmi, some old players will also be back in Tiger 3. Ranvir Shorey, who essayed the role of Khan's handler Gopi Arya in Ek Tha Tiger (2012), will reprise his role in Tiger 3. Reportedly, Ranvir Shorey is expected to start filming his portions at the Yash Raj Films Studio in Andheri next week. Shorey's character was not extended to Tiger Zinda Hai, the second installment
of the franchise. But while writing Tiger 3, producer Aditya Chopra and writer Jaideep Sahni decided to bring him back as the trusted aide of RAW agent Avinash Rathore portrayed by Khan. Ranvir and Salman will be reportedly shooting a comedy scene followed by a high octane action sequence. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film went on floors in March. The director hopes to film some major portions of the movie in Istanbul and Dubai once the pandemic situation improves.

By Rama Gaind

Richa Chadha (Fukrey series, Gangs of Wasseypur), in the title role as Tara Roopram, described the
film as being “about an ‘untouchable’ who hustles and makes it big in life”.
In 2005, the girl child Tara has grown up to become a fiery and hot-headed young
lady, whose whirlwind affair with an upcoming politician almost gets her killed.
Babil Khan – Tripti Dimri to star in Anushka Sharma’s next collaboration with Netflix Qala year, Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Filmz collaborated with streaming giant Netflix for a supernatural thriller Bulbbul. If that wasn’t all, it is also being said that the film will feature the late actor Irrfan Khan’s son Babil Khan alongside Tripti Dimri. Commenting on the development a well-placed trade source tells us, “Qala is a beautiful heart-breaking story about a daughter who craves her mother’s love. The film will see late Irrfan Khan’s son Babil making his debut alongside Tripti Dimri. Besides these two Qala also features Swastika Mukherjee in a pivotal role.” Taking to his Instagram handle to talk about his launch, Babil shared a video from the sets of the film saying, “Tripti freaking Dimri is back again!!!!!! Whooooooo!!! Also I’m a bit skeptical about the phrase ‘getting launched’ because the audience should launch off their seats while watching our film and not any individual actor. Interestingly, Tripti shared that they have already completed the first schedule of the film that is being directed by Anvitaa Dutt. Posting about the same she added, “Wrapped up the first schedule of Qala.. Super happy and excited to be joining hands with such an amazing and enthusiastic team for the second time... From the creators of Bulbbul, Clean Slate Filmz and Anvitaa Dutt, we bring you #Qala, a Netflix Original film. Qala will be here soon
to share her story of her fight for a place in her mother's heart.” Netflix, today, revealed the first looks from the set of Qala starring Tripti Dimri, the lead actor in Bulbbul who swept hearts and accolades with her performance, along with Babil I. Khan. The film marks Babil’s debut and also stars Swastika Mukherjee. Talking about the film, Anvitaa Dutt (Director) said, “Mother-daughter relationships are sacred and often complicated. Qala is a beautiful, heart-breaking story about a daughter who craves her mother’s love. I am ecstatic to have such incredible actors on-board
and cannot wait for the world to discover the film with Tripti, Babil and Swastika. It's always a pleasure to partner with Clean Slate Filmz and Netflix as they believe in bringing to life empowered stories like Bulbbul, and now Qala.” Karnesh Ssharma (Producer, Clean Slate Filmz) said, “At Clean Slate, our aim is to always produce content that stands out. Netflix, as a partner, shares the same vision which enables us to tell stories which are unique, clutter-breaking and heartwarming. After the success of Bulbbul, we are happy to announce our second film association with Netflix for Qala.” “With Bulbbul, we found imaginative creative partners in Clean Slate Filmz to bring to life the stunning vision of Anvitaa Dutt. We are thrilled to reunite with them for Qala, and once again tell an intricate tale of a woman that we hope will resonate with many. We are also excited that the incredibly talented Tripti Dimri will be back on Netflix, this time with the promising Babil I. Khan, the newest addition to the growing Netflix family”, said Srishti Behl Arya, Director International Original Film, Netflix India.

She defies all odds, changing the game of casteism and despite showing no political ambition she climbs the ladder as a nobody to become a seasoned politician. The right of a woman to live with dignity has always been at crossroads with society's norms. That said, the film strives to make a statement; its unwavering commitment to being a simple entertainer works well. Its all-embracing theme remains faithful to Tara’s personal journey, despite stuffing in too many ground level issues like social groups, lawlessness and vote-bank politics. That’s what makes it more interesting, and Chadha’s brand of equable performance has appeal. Chadha makes her presence felt in every frame, and shares some winning moments with Saurabh Shukla (exceptional acting), a respected grass-root level Dalit leader called Masterji, attracting attention with his
remarkable restrain and pragmatic portrayal of Tara’s honourable mentor. He takes her under his wing, which begins her journey into the murky world of politics and power. The plot twists are changeable with an active screenplay that includes innumerable events and challenges in the protagonist’s life. Subhash Kapoor could have dedicated a little more time to the development of Tara’s character that would have lent more conviction to the narrative. Though the film lacks glamour, the celluloid canvas is appropriate. Chadda’s powerful act as UP’s iron-willed lady covers most of the flaws and urges you to cast your vote for her. She is authoritative yet aggrieved, bold and often deceived. In other performances, Akshay Oberoi as Indramani Tripathi is incredible, Manav Kaul as Danish Khan is wonderful and Nikhil Vijay as Babloo leaves a lasting impression.

“Can you get hepatitis by sharing food?” The most common types of hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Food and water can be contaminated by the hepatitis A virus, and if consumed can cause a person to become infected with the virus. The hepatitis A virus is spread through faeces (poo). The person with hepatitis A can spread hepatitis A if their hands are not washed properly when preparing food or drink. If a person becomes infected with hepatitis A it is usually a short-term illness (acute) and the person will get immunity (will not get the infection again). You can be vaccinated against hepatitis A if you have never had the infection. Before you have a vaccine you should have a hepatitis A test at your GP to find out if you need the vaccine. We should always wash our hands after going to the toilet and before we handle,
prepare or eat food. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are mainly spread through blood contact. You cannot get hepatitis B or hepatitis C from sharing food or:
• Plates and cups, chopsticks or cutlery. • Shaking hands, hugging and kissing. • Sneezing • Using public toilets
or swimming pools. • Breastfeeding • Mosquito bites. • Not through sharing towels etc Blood to blood contact can occur with even the tiniest amount of infected blood, from a person infected with hepatitis B or Hepatitis C, including: • The use of unsterile medical equipment, including tattooing equipment etc • Blood and blood product transfusions performed overseas • Sharing personal hygiene items eg razors, toothbrushes. • Cultural practices and traditional treatments including scarification and acupuncture. • Sharing injecting drug equipment. • During birth from mother to baby if the mother has hepatitis B, much less common for Hepatitis C.
• Sexual contact if one of the partners has hepatitis B, therefore you should use condoms or have the hepatitis B vaccination if not immune. A simple blood test will tell you if you have hepatitis A, B or C, or if you have immunity for Hepatitis A or B. • Any person who has the hepatitis B infection needs regular monitoring. • Most people who have the hepatitis C infection can be cured. If you have hepatitis B or hepatitis C, and have not
seen your GP about these infections, you should make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible. Indian Premier League: The risks of hosting the IPL during a pandemic The richest and most glamorous tournament in world cricket is on schedule in India even as the country battles a deadly second wave of Covid-19 infections. Beginning on Friday, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will have eight teams playing 60 games at six venues behind closed doors across the country. The final will be played on 30 May. The matches will be held in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Most of these cities are seeing a sharp uptick in infections and hospitalisations. More than 165,000 people have died with Covid-19 in India, and there have been 12.5 million confirmed infections. The country has been averaging more than 90,000 daily cases in April in a second wave largely attributed to laxity in public safety protocols. A senior official of the Indian cricket board has said he is confident the 14th edition of the IPL will go ahead "without any problem". Rajiv Shukla, vicepresident of the board, told ANI news agency that secure bio-bubbles had been created for the players and other people associated with the tournament, and that they were getting tested for the virus. "Keeping in mind all the precautions, the tournament will go ahead without any problems," Mr Shukla said. Four cricketers and a team consultant have already tested positive for Covid-19 and been put into isolation before the start of the tournament. Devdutt Padikkal, an opening batsman for the Bangalore franchise, is in quarantine at home. Delhi Capitals spinner Axar Patel
and Kolkata Knight Riders' Nitish Rana have also tested positive for the virus. Kiran More, the former India wicketkeeper and Mumbai Indians consultant, has become the "first case of a franchise representative having been infected in a bio bubble," according to one report. And on Wednesday, Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore, became the first foreign player to test positive after his arrival in Chennai (formerly Madras). Ten ground staff at Mumbai's Wankhede stadium, which will host 10 games, have also tested positive. Five of the eight teams are now living and training in different grounds in Mumbai, the city worst hit by India's second wave. "Dark Covid cloud looms over IPL", headlined The Times of India. The newspaper also posed a number of pertinent questions: Why is the tournament being played in six cities when spectators are not allowed in the stadium? Why did the cricket board not move this year's edition to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), like last year? "Is this edition a ticking time bomb now?" it enquired. The teams are said
to be staying in secure accommodation, and don't come into contact with anyone outside the bubble. The cricket board has hired "bubble integrity managers" for each team, says one report. According to ESPNCricinfo, the stadium staff in Mumbai are being "tested every two days". Many believe it will not be easy to maintain the security of the bubbles, however. Between them, the eight teams have some 200 players living in bubbles. Then there are hundreds of support staff, team management staff, commentators, broadcast crew, groundsmen and caterers living in different bubbles. Star Sports, the broadcasters of the tournament, alone have some 700 crew members and more than 100 commentators living in eight separate bubbles, the Hindustan Times reported. "The officials have taken a big risk. If one secure bubble collapses, the tournament will be in jeopardy," a former IPL team official, who preferred to remain unnamed, told the BBC. Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian captain and the current chief of the cricket board, has been quoted as saying that last year's IPL in the UAE showed that "once everything settles
down and is in bubble, things come under control". But safeguarding bubble security in Indian cities where cricketers are treated as superstars may not be as simple. When the IPL was moved to the UAE last summer, Covid-19 infection rates there were far lower than they are in India now. The games were played at only three venues - in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and there was no air travel involved, unlike this time. It is true that cancelling the tournament now would result in a big financial hit for the Indian cricket board. Calling off the IPL last year would have led to losses upwards of $500m from media rights alone, according to one estimate. "It is true that a lot of money is riding on the tournament. The IPL also brings lots of money to domestic cricket. But I personally feel they should not play the tournament," Suresh Menon, editor of Wisden India Almanack, told the BBC. He says if there's a major outbreak of infection in the bubbles, the tournament will have to be called off. India has a packed cricketing calendar ahead: between now and the next IPL in 2022, India is scheduled to play 14 Tests, 12 ODIs and 22 Twenty20s. This, beside the World Twenty20 in India in October. "Through a combination of well-planned bubbles, player discipline, and good fortune, India played through the pandemic year in 2020 without casualties and without, so far as we know, significant mental issues. But the pressures of playing in such conditions cannot be exaggerated," says Mr Menon.
