From the Publisher AUGUST is here with the Westerlies, yes that means it is Ekka time, hope you all had a good time at Ekka. August also brings to us India’s Independence Day and in Brisbane GOPIO Queensland puts on their signature iconic event the India Day Fair. The GOPIO Team did a wonderful job of hosting the event, the biggest one so far. The entire day was very well planned and presented with an excellent line of performers. The maximum numbers of stall were in place. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Trudi Tarres, who ever so diligently handled the program run sheet and the performers sign up. The entire planning team did a wonderful job and the results were nothing short of a spectacular. August also brings Raksha Bandhan and Janam Astami, wishing everyone all the very best for both. This August also marked the centenary of World War One. Many Indian soldiers fought side by side the allied forces many of whom did not return. In their Remembrance GOPIO has organised Remembrance Day in France and GOPIO Qld paid a special tribute to them at their India Day fair 2014. I would like to congratulate Dr Thakor Bhai Patel who received the GOPIO Queensland lifetime achievement award for community service. He is a truly deserving person, a pioneer of the Indian community, he had served on various committees and has organised many community events, he has been associated with ICA, FICQ, Radio 4EB and many more community organisations. Hailing originally from Ba, Fiji, he has done our community proud. You still find him serving his people and caring for his patients at Kedron Park medical centre, soft spoken and humble is referred the doctor who provides the kiss of life. I am so happy that GOPIO Qld’s initial proposal of establishing a Mahatma Gandhi statute is a step closer and now has the support of FICQ, AIBC and a full committee has been formed to oversee the project. The committee has met with Lord Mayor and are in negotiation for the desired location. Mr Hemant Naik had been approached by the now Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, fifteen years ago to get a Statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Brisbane. GOPIO had lodged a proposal after the inauguration of GOPIO Canberra in 2013, which if you remember

from past reports in Brisbane Indian Times, took place on Gandhi Jyanti and in front of Gandhiji’s statue. This brings me to my next topic the G20, Brisbane is gearing up for the upcoming G20, many city streets will be in a lock down situation, with the arrival of so many world leaders Brisbane is getting ready to provide the best it can. In a briefing Lord Mayor said that he encourages many to the city based businesses to be open for extended hours during and in the lead up to the summit. It is not only the leaders that would be in Brisbane but it is predicated that there would be more than four thousand international journalists in attendance. Also in attendance will a large number of support staff of the world leaders. This is a great opportunity for Brisbane, we can all remember how Expo 88 put Brisbane on the map, like what our Lord Mayor said that while this is not exactly Expo 88, it will give Brisbane a similar opportunity to project itself as a world class city. We all have to play our part in being the true ambassadors and hosts. Now to our newspaper you will notice the increased number of pages, as we would like to cover as many stories as possible and believe me, there is a lot happening out there in the community. We welcome all submissions from community organisations, however we do reserve the right to edit before publishing, and editing is done; to fit article into available space, to highlight relevant matter of trivial, factual accurateness, political correctness etc. It is becoming very expensive to maintain the weekly email blasts for all community events, the current structure is under review, the same goes for the free event listing on the website, as much as we would like to support all community organisations, it is not possible to accommodate all the requests for free placing, and it will be on a rotational basis, it will also be dependent on the available space. We are in negotiation with a new service provider and new webhosting company with the view to maintain the quality and containing the cost costs. In coming months we will keep you posted on the developments and bring some exciting news relating to better marketing promotion opportunities of all our clients. Until Next month, Happy reading Umesh Chandra

Migration Updates....
What is public interest criteria - 4020
PUBLIC Interest Criterion (PIC) 4020 is a criterion that attaches to a number of visa subclasses. If PIC 4020 is part of the criteria for the particular visa you have applied for you must satisfy PIC 4020 in order to be granted your visa. Since 2011, PIC 4020 has enabled refusal of a visa if an applicant provides a bogus document or information that is false or misleading in relation to their application. On 22 March 2014, concurrent with the introduction of the new identity requirement, PIC 4020 will be re-badged as the 'integrity' PIC. VISA AFFECTED BY PUBLIC INTEREST CRITERIA - 4020 • skilled migration • business • temporary visas • student visas • family visas. NEW REQUIREMENT - IDENTITY From 22 March 2014, new provisions will be added to the current PIC 4020. As part of this new requirement you must satisfy us of your identity to be granted a visa. This requirement is not subject to a waiver. If you are refused a visa because you do not meet PIC 4020 on identity grounds, another visa that includes PIC 4020 as part of the critieria will not be granted to you for a period of 10 years after refusal. This means if we are not satisfied of your identity: • your visa might be refused; and • if it is refused on that basis, you cannot be granted another visa (where that visa includes PIC 4020 as part of the criteria) for 10 years. This requirement applies to visa applications lodged on or after 22 March 2014 and all visa applications made, but not finally determined before 22 March 2014. Members of the family unit If your visa is refused because you did not satisfy us of your identity, anyone who has you listed as a member of their family unit will also be refused. These family members will also be prevented from being granted another visa (where that visa includes PIC 4020 as part of the criteria) for 10 years. BOGUS DOCUMENTS OR MISLEADING INFORMATION PIC 4020 also relates to the provision of bogus documents or information that is false or mis-

leading. Visa applicants must not provide bogus documents or information that is false or misleading in a material particular with their visa application. Your visa application might be refused, if you or any of the members of your family unit: • provide a bogus document or information that is false or misleading as part of your current visa application or • previously provided a bogus document or information that is false or misleading in relation to a visa that you held in the 12 months before making your current application. If your visa application is refused because you or any of the members of your family unit provide bogus documents or information that is false or misleading in a material particular, you might be prevented from being granted a visa for three years. Included family members If your visa is refused because you provided a bogus document or information that is false or misleading, anyone in your application who has you as a member of their family unit might also be refused. These family members might also be prevented from being granted another visa for three years. Chances to Comment If you are unable to satisfy us of your identity, or your application includes a bogus document or false or misleading information, we will notify you and ask you to provide comments within a specified time period. If you have provided a bogus document or false or misleading information, but you think you should be granted a visa regardless, you should comment on whether there are any circumstances that would justify granting you the visa. Review Rights If your visa application is refused, you might have the right to have the decision reviewed by the Migration Review Tribunal. We will advise you what review rights are available to you if your visa application is refused

THE seventh annual Ashu Babu Memorial Tabla concert was held on 12th July at the main auditorium of Queensland Multicultural Centre. It was held on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima. The concert featured twenty two Tabla students which included four most senior students in a quartet. The students were accompanied on Harmonium by Joseph Abhay Nand. Shen Flindell the teacher (Guru) of the students performed solo. It is encouraging to see so many young stu-
dents taking keen interest in learning Tabla, the credit also goes to the supportive parents as in today’s world it is very easy for the youngsters to get distracted with so many other activities around them. The very fact that they find time to come to the classes is a testament in itself, let alone learning all the “Bols” and mastering the beats and the timing. Musicians agree that Tabla may look simple but is in fact a very complicated instrument and not an easy one to master.

Historic HOTA Forum at Sri Ayyappa Temple By Mr Rudra Kumar ON Sunday, 13th July 2017 the very first HOTA Forum in Australia, important Historic unique event was organised at Sydney Sri Ayyappa Temple. HOTA (Hindu Organisations, Temples and Associations) is a forum of participating Hindu temples and other Hindu organisations working together to discuss and deliberate various topics of common interest, issues, ideas and opportunities with the objective of enhancing community service and preservation of Hindu culture. HOTA was launched by Sri Swami Vigyanand at 3rd Australian National Hindu conference in April 2014. HOTA Forum will achieve its objectives through two annual events- a Forum and a cultural event- Raksha Bandan. Every year, under the VHP HOTA co-ordination, one of the Forum participants will host the events and all participating organisations will collaboratively work through the year on the plans and projects coming out of the Forum. Sri Rudra Kumar, VHP HOTA co-ordinator spoke on the vision, benefits of conducting HOTA Forum through networking collaborating on a common platform as an annual project. He also provided strong evidence how similar HOTA Forums have benefited the cause of preserving Hindu culture and enhancing community service in other countries such as USA and New Zealand. Sydney Sri Ayyappa temple hosted the very first historic HOTA forum on Sunday at the temple premises. More than 15 temples and Hindu associations came together and each presented their contributions and future ideas for community service. Sri Divakar Harle, VHP HOTA co-ordinator facilitated the workshop by making three groups based on the themes- Associations, Temples and Youth. The discussions and brainstorming sessions were very productive and illuminating to all the participants. Examples of
ideas and discussions included sharing priest resources, improving procurement of pooja materials, strengthening youth engagement in Hindu cultural activities, increasing the footprint of Sanskrit and Hindi in education systems and a Hindu School in Australia. The outcome was an action plan to be taken up and executed by the leaders of each of these initiatives. During the forum, many distinguished speakers including Cr Raj Dutta from Indian Deepavali Committee spoke on the challenges and opportunities for Hindu organisations in the Australian multi-cultural context. Earlier, Sri Mohan Sundaram and Sri Venkataraman of Ayyappa Temple spoke on the contribution of Sri Ayyappa temple towards the com-

Join cancer fight in Cycle for Life ride LORD Mayor Graham Quirk is encouraging residents to join the fight against cancer by registering for the Cancer Council Queensland’s Cycle for Life charity bike ride. On Sunday, 14th September, the ride will kick-off at Musgrave Park in South Brisbane at 7am, loop around the river and along some of Brisbane’s key inner city bikeways and finish back at the start location at 10am. The event is sponsored by Brisbane City Council, providing approximately 500 CityCycles and courtesy helmets for the charity ride. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the event would raise money for Cancer Council Queensland and help spread awareness of active and healthy transport options. “All funds raised will help improve the prospects of preventing, detecting, effectively treating and surviving a cancer diagnosis in Queensland through local research,” Cr Quirk said. “Anyone 17 years or over will ride a CityCycle in the event, with younger riders able to participate if they bring their own bike. “Riders are encouraged to stay on after the ride for a family event featuring refreshments, stalls and entertainment in Musgrave Park.” CityCycle places are limited. Eid message from MCF By Osman Rane (Vice President MCF) EID MUBARAK to all. May Allah bless you and reward you and accept all your ibadah and duas. This financial year, our team investigated, visited, interviewed and recorded two hundred and sixty nine cases compared to one hundred and seventy seven cases, for the previous financial year. This clearly indicates that the problem of welfare in our local Muslim community is growing and we must, as a community, recognize that there is a genuine need right here in our own back yard. Many clients have limited or no income and don't have the basic necessities, such as white goods, bedding and household items. Others are struggling to survive from week to week on Centrelink
payments or part time work. Many are forced to seek help from Christian based organizations. With constant increases in the cost of living, more people are finding it difficult to pay their rent or bills for essential services, such as electricity and gas. The introduction of the Halal Food Bank run by the Seekers Hub Brisbane has provided us with twenty to thirty food hampers per month which we have distributed to the most needy. May Allah(SWT) reward them and all the donors Inshallah. We are dealing with an increase in the number of domestic issues, such as separations, divorces, domestic abuse, homeless cases and family breakdowns. Usually, it is the mother or wife left to manage on a very limited income. MCF has paid funeral costs for those that could not afford to pay the required amounts, and we foresee an increase in this need in the future. Others required urgent med-
ical treatment, purchase of medical aids or payment of medical bills. It is pleasing to see the recognition given to MCF from Government support agencies, Imams, Societies, and organizations. I sincerely thank our donors for their ongoing generous financial support. MCF has a 100% donation policy, where all monies collected are distributed to those in need. I wish to thank our donors, sponsors, well-wishers, volunteers and members of MCF for their on-going support and contributions. I make a special dua for those less fortunate and those being oppressed throughout the world. Finally we ask for forgiveness for any mistakes that might have been made during the year and urge you to continue to support the work of the Muslim Charitable Foundation. May Allah grant us a long life of good health to continue to serve the Ummah. Eid Mubarak.
Federation of the Pacific Islands’ Communities of Queensland News…. THE Pacific Islands’ communities in regional and urban Queensland have established an umbrella body to represent and advocate on their behalf at different levels of government in the State. The Federation of Pacific Islands’ Communities of Queensland (FPICQ) was initially suggested and endorsed by the inaugural Talanoa Pasifika Conference in 2012 and re-endorsed by the follow-up conference in November 2013. The Talanoa Pasifika Conference is an annual event where academics and professional practitioners of the Pacific Islands region, who are based in Queensland, are gathered to discuss, debate and share ideas about issues that are important to the migrant population in Queensland. Following last year’s conference, where a Steering Committee of seven members, was appointed, an Executive report was presented and adopted by the Talanoa Pasifika Conference in July 17-18 2014 at Cairns Institutes, James Cook University’s Cairns
Campus. Committee Chairman Ofa Fukofuka said the Federation is an overarching body that will act as a united voice for the Queensland-based communities of the Pacific Islands in the State. He said over the past decades, the communities of the Pacific Islands in Queensland have been unable to proactively advocating on socioeconomic, political, cultural and educational issues that are heavily impacting them. Following incorporation of this body, the
Executive will be eager to work closely with various groups, representing the communities of the Pacific Islands in Queensland, to ensure that their voice is heard at State, Councils and Governmental departments. The establishment of the Federation has been on the making over the past few years. There are existing groups representing the various communities of the Pacific Islands in Queensland, but they are only catered for specific localities and Island groups. With the Federation now up and running, Fukofuka said the Federation is not going to intrude into the existing activities and operations of current Pacific Islands’ groups, but will focus on assisting community groups in areas and matters that they need support. The Federation is looking forward to working together with the Pacific Islands communities in Queensland. For further information email pasifikwantoks@gmail.com

Camp Quality launches second Dine At Mine Campaign Host a dining event and help kids living with Cancer FOR the second consecutive year Camp Quality is urging home chefs and cooking enthusiasts to arrange a dining experience in support of children living with cancer, and their families, with the Dine At Mine campaign. Cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia and approximately 10,000 children are either newly diagnosed with cancer, under treatment or in remission. Dine At Mine was a huge success in its inaugural year last August, and is now a major fundraiser for the children’s cancer charity. The concept is simple, throughout August hosts invite family and friends to a dining experience and asks them to donate what they would have spent dining out to Camp Quality. Hosts are encouraged to “Make it Yours” - Whether it’s a BBQ after a local football game, dinner with the family, a brunch at work or lunch with friends, you can host a Dine at Mine that works for you. All funds will help create a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia. Last year’s ambassadors supporting the Dine At Mine campaign, Manu Feildel, Lyndey Milan and Justine Schofield, are joined this year by Channel 9 presenter Erin Molan, and TV cooks, authors and personal trainers Luke Hines and Scott Gooding. Scott says “I am absolutely delighted to be involved with Dine At Mine and Camp Quality. Camp Quality is an amazing charity which offers valuable fun and laughter to children living with cancer. Allowing the kids with cancer to feel like kids is a powerful thing and certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Dine at Mine is an ideal way to get friends, colleagues or family together for a feed and to raise money for Camp Quality. I’m looking forward to hearing all the different ways people get together for this great cause, and I’ll certainly be hosting my own.”
constant worry. The charity is currently expanding its programs which build optimism, resilience and confidence – at hospital, at home, at school and at camp. The Dine At Mine fundraising campaign will enable Camp Quality to deliver these expanded services. Funds raised from Dine At Mine will help children like Omaid who was diagnosed with cancer at seven years old. Now in his third year of treatment, extensive chemotherapy has left Omaid with constant pain, nausea, blistered feet and hands; and brittle bones resulting in three broken arms in the last year. was diagnosed, it was completely shattering. With four children, our family almost fell apart. Camp Quality’s programs were a blessing to us all; we got the chance to spend time together as a family, away from the stress of treatment and the children had that time to just be kids again. Even now, when the boys come back from camp, we see the impact it has on them; they’re confident and happy - they’re smiling real smiles.” This year Camp Quality hopes everyone will register to host a Dine At Mine in August to help the charity achieve their goal of supporting every child living with cancer across Australia.

The Honorable Glen Elmes the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs flew into the Gladstone Region to open the 16th Gladstone Multicultural Festival. Put together by the Gladstone Multicultural Association Inc. (GMAI), the week ended on Sunday with all those who attended leaving with wonderful memories, experiences and unity. The differing cultures showed how the Gladstone community has expanded in such a short period of time. Held at the Gladstone Marina, MC Pushpa Bakshi (Vice President Social Programs) said “the week was about unity, community and celebrating cultural diversity no matter what walks of life we were from” she stated, “Gladstone has the world of cultures here in the region and today is a reflection of just that”. Comments were very positive, in that many mentioned this year was even
better than they had anticipated. Pushpa’s Integration of differing Cultures in today’s society workshop at the “WOMEN’S HEALTH CENTRE”, saw women from all corners of the world attend. They had an opportunity in understanding other cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes, in an era where public policy and discrimination plays a major role in adaptation of other values and systems, which is a focal point. Attitudes recognize diversity exists in today’s society and implement positive changes. The reality of multiculturalism

and religion. We have received considerable support from different levels of government and some community members but we need a lot more financial support to make this dream a reality. Every contribution counts and it is worth pointing out that all donations are tax-deductible. We hope that through this ‘Youth Supporters Program’, more members of the community would realize how serious and committed we are in supporting all levels of our community with their spiritual needs”, he said. For more information about the ‘Youth Supporters Program’ or the ‘Hindu Cultural Precinct’ project, please contact the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association through email - gchcan@gmail.com GCHCA Director, Neela Ramiah invites all supporters to join as members of the Association and to participate at the AGM on 31st August 2014. Based on wider Hindu community request, GCHCA is also planning to participate in the Gold Coast Multicultural Festival on Sunday, September 14th 2014. Your involvement would be welcome. GCHCA also is making arrangements to celebrate the “Navaratry” on Oct 4th at 6pm in the Bicentennial community Hall, Nerang with a cultural program.

The committee and the supporting groups are already planning next year’s events as well as new programs throughout the year. GMAI would also like to thank all our sponsors and the Gladstone community for all its support, this would never come about without your support through the past 16 years of deliverance.

GCHCA launch youth supporters program
IN A bid to ensure that younger members of the Hindu community remain connected to cultural and religious affairs, The Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association (GCHCA) has officially launched its Youth Supporters Program. GCHCA Secretary, Mr Indy Siva said that the program was initiated in response to concerns from elders in the community who felt that those from the younger generations were increasingly disengaging with culture, religion, their mother tongue and disinterested in community matters. “It is of utmost importance that we involve our children and youth. The survival of our religion and culture in Australia is dependent on our young people and we in the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association are making every effort to ensure that we cater to the needs and interests of our children,” he said. Currently 12 young Hindus below the age of 18 have signed up to be ‘Youth Supporters’. GCHCA’s Joint Secretary, Kartik Menon said that upon turning 18, ‘Youth Supporters’ will be able to apply for ‘Life Membership’. “Families of youth supporters will only need to make a nominal contribution of $100. Upon turning 18, these youth supporters will be able to apply for life membership if they meet the requirements of the constitution. The idea is that we want the association to build and foster a good relationship with our community members from an early stage,” he said. GCHCA’s Treasurer, Mr Rathinam Srinivasan stated that the association was in the midst of developing a Hindu Cultural Precinct in Arundel, Gold Coast which would facilitate many of the initiatives which have been lined up under the ‘Youth Supporters Program’. “This would be a great space for our younger ones to learn about their culture

As clinical psychologists practicing in a growing multicultural society believe an essential portion of treatment, is in accepting other persons of differing cultures, beliefs, and values. Competitions were held for Chess, Basketball and opening night at CQ University, consisted of great food, entertainment and movies with all the dignitaries present. We provide information on local schools, rental facilities, day care centers, kindies, medical facilities, shopping and places of interest to enable them to make the right choices. We also celebrate the important festivals of the differing cultures such as EID, Chinese New Year, Fijian, and New Zealand and Indian so that people can still be in touch with their own culture and most importantly the children learn about their culture while imbibing the Australian way of life. South American group Walisume, who travel around Australia playing traditional music from the Andes Mountains, played at the festival. Band member Miguel Ayma said events like this fostered acceptance and tolerance of people from different backgrounds. “I think it’s very educational for everyone to interact with people from different cultures.
A FURTHER 60 double passes to Anzac Day at Gallipoli in 2015 will be released to Australians on the waitlist thanks to the generosity of Turkey, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson announced on 8 August, 2014. Senator Ronaldson said the Turkish Government had handed back 150 of the 250 places originally reserved for its official guests, providing additional places at the commemorations for Australians and New Zealanders. “I want to acknowledge the very generous offer by the Turkish Government to limit the size of their official party to enable more Australians and New Zealanders to attend these very special commemorations. Turkey very graciously allows us to conduct these ceremonies in Turkey and we are grateful for this further gesture of goodwill.” “From today (8 August), a further 75 double passes will be released to Australians and New Zealanders on waitlists: 15 will go to New Zealanders and 60 to Australians. Australian passes will be offered to the next 60 Australians on the waitlist,” he said. Senator Ronaldson said the 60 double passes now available to those listed on the waitlist are in addition to the more than 140 double passes offered to Australians recently, following the activation of the waitlist in late June. “I encourage Australians who were successful in the ballot to accept or decline
their place as soon as possible. There are many people on the waitlist eager to attend the commemorations, and it is important to give those people as much time as possible to organise and pay for their trip,” he said. The waitlist will operate until 31 March 2015. Further draws of the waitlist are expected in the coming months as those who were initially offered a place in the ballot accept or decline their passes. Final acceptances are due by 11:59 pm AEDT, Saturday 25 October 2014. Senator Ronaldson said that the Centenary of Anzac will be the most significant period of commemoration in our nation’s history and the Government is committed to providing opportunities for all Australians to participate. “Those without tickets for Anzac Day 2015 may consider visiting Gallipoli on 6 August 2015 for the Battle of Lone Pine Centenary commemoration service. The Battle at Lone Pine saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Gallipoli campaign,” he said. “Australians may also consider attending another Dawn Service in Australia or overseas or watch the television broadcast of the Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux services on the ABC. Another option is to visit Gallipoli at another time during the Centenary year.” For more information on Gallipoli 2015 visit www.gallipoli2015.dva.gov.au or the Anzac Centenary visit www.anzaccentenary.gov.au

Australian Bureau of Statistics Trade in Goods and Services data show Australian exports rose 10 per cent in 2013-14 to $332 billion, compared with 2012-13. Imports rose 5 per cent to $338 billion. Brisbane entrepreneurs encouraged to apply for a technology start-up grant DO you have what it takes to be Brisbane’s next successful technology start-up? Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is searching for Brisbane’s most talented and innovative technology start-up entrepreneurs to apply for round three of the Budding Entrepreneurs Program, which is now open. The $25,000 Lord Mayor’s Budding Entrepreneurs Program offers grants of up to $5000 for entrepreneurs to attend a startup event or conference, obtain professional advice, join a support program, undertake education or participate in a trade mission. The program is part of the Digital Brisbane Strategy and is designed to provide practical support to young entrepreneurs and encourage more start-up success stories like Brisbane-born We Are Hunted, Fruit Ninja and Hungry Hero. “The Budding Entrepreneurs Program is one of Digital Brisbane’s most successful initiatives, with the past two rounds attracting more than 225 applications and introducing us to some great new Brisbane technology start-ups,” Cr Quirk said. “The 24 successful applicants to date have shared in $50,000 in grant money,” he said. “We were impressed by their global aspirations and their ability to solve problems through technology and teach themselves the skills to develop and launch innovative businesses. “My expectations were vastly exceeded in the last two rounds and I would encourage more budding entrepreneurs, even those who have missed out in the past, to get their applications in for round three.”
Amongst other members of Brisbane’s technical elite, this round’s judging panel will include Halfbrick’s Phil Larsen, Red Hat’s Mike Hideo-Smith and Microsoft Innovation Centre’s Luke Swetman. Past Budding Entrepreneurs grant recipients have found their grant wins were very helpful towards helping their start-up businesses. Nkosana Mafico received $2500 in round two with his start-up PeeP Digital. The online platform simplifies the international phonetics system and makes English pronunciation easier. “The grant enabled me to travel to San Francisco’s Silicon Valley as well as attend the G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance Summit in Sydney,” he said. “It opened up doors for both PeeP and me personally… directly helping PeeP by getting introductions into companies we want to work with like Accenture, Intel, Google and Singtel. “This grant is ideal for early stage start-ups looking to get to the next level and for young entrepreneurs looking to further develop their skill set.” Budding entrepreneurs who can demonstrate they have an idea for a digital business or who have recently launched a business they would like to accelerate can apply via digitalbrisbane.com.au. Applications are open until Monday 1 September, 2014 and successful recipients will be notified in October. To find out more and enter visit www.digitalbrisbane.com.au

GOPIO Qld confers Community Lifetime Community Service Award to Dr Thakor Patel GOPIO Queensland confers the lifetime community service award to a worthy recipient at their annual India Day Fair. This year the Award went to Dr Thakor Patel, the award was presented by Professor Sarva Danam Singh at the India Day Fair held on 10th August at Roma street Parklands. In presenting the Award Professor Sarva Danam Singh highlighted the achievements and contributions to the community by Dr Thakor Patel. Dr Patel is a highly respected pioneer of the Indian community, he had served on various community committees and had hosted many functions of visiting dignitaries from India. Dr Patels community involvement included but is not limited to FICQ, ICA and radio 4EB, he is still practising from Kedron Park Medical centre. Originally from Ba Fiji, he was part of a family of business people and indulging in commerce, mining and trade at a very early age, Dr Patel’s decision to become a physician was made the day his grandfather passed away in 1950. “There were very limited medical facilities available back then and his death as a result of this secured my fate. cation at Marist Brothers High School in Suva,” he said. Dr Patel returned to Fiji and operated as a general practitioner for five years from 1964 to 1969 in Lautoka. “Local doctors faced a lot of challenges in those days. We were paid much less than expatriate doctors even though some of us
had more experience and were more qualified and we had issues with a pharmacy owner who used to give patients medicine other than what we prescribed simply because they didn’t think we knew what we were doing. In one case, a particular chemist used to dose out tetracycline if I prescribed penicillin and this caused a
major problem because it caused the discolouration of children’s teeth,” said Dr Patel. The former Lautoka resident was instrumental in the formation of the Gujarat Education Society in Lautoka in the late 1960s which saw the establishment of Lautoka.

Tamils trained for lifeboat return to India: lawyers Author Michelle Grattan Professorial Fellow at University of Canberra
theconversation.com LAWYERS for the 157 Tamil asylum seekers now transferred to Nauru say that while being held at sea the people were told they would be put into orange lifeboats bound for India. The Human Rights Law Centre said that in mid-July, after the asylum seekers had been aboard the Oceanic Protector for about a fortnight, nine adults were instructed how to use the lifeboats. “The clients we have spoken to were terrified at the prospect of being dumped in the ocean on lifeboats,” the centre’s executive director, Hugh de Kretser, said in a statement. “We have been told that on around Monday 14 July, nine adults and two children were removed from the rest of the 157 in the group. The nine adults were taken to a number of orange lifeboats and told they would be put in them and would need to navigate them to India. “They were instructed in English how to use the lifeboats. All of them speak Tamil and only one or two spoke a little English. They were told that each boat would have 50-60 people on it,” de Kretser said. “When they refused, saying they had no experience in operating or navigating a boat and couldn’t take responsibility for ensur-

ing the safety of the people on board, the officers told them it was an Australian government decision and they had to obey. “The nine adults and two children were then separately detained from the rest of the 157 for four or five days. Each day they were extremely fearful of what was going to happen to them. Then they were taken back into the three main rooms and reunited with the rest of the group. The entire group was then terrified that at any moment they would be dumped in the ocean,” de Kretser said.

He said it was not clear why the government did not proceed with the lifeboat plan. The 157 people had been “subjected to a level of cruelty and callousness that has no place in modern Australia”, de Kretser said. The advocates were able to speak to only 15 of the 107 adults. The centre has been told the majority of the group are Christian, and that they are Sri Lankan Tamils and are fleeing persecution in Sri Lanka, with some of them arriving in India less than six months ago. “The asylum seekers revealed a precarious existence in India where they were denied basic legal rights including being able to lawfully work, send their children to school or have freedom of movement. India is not a party to the Refugee Convention. Some revealed safety fears in India also. “We were unable to explore these issues properly with the 15 clients we spoke to and were urgently seeking proper legal access to all 157 asylum seekers in order to advise them on the option of speaking to Indian officials in Australia,” said de Kretser. The people were detained on the Customs ship between June 29 and July 25. Immigration Minister Scott Morrison refused to be drawn on whether people were being trained to use the orange lifeboats, saying he did not discuss operational matters. He said that while the asylum seekers were at the Curtin detention centre they were

given the opportunity to speak to Indian consular officials. On July 29 the leaders of the group had access to their lawyers and there was a discussion. “We’re not privy to what those discussions were. And following those discussions, 157 people coincidentally decided not to take up that offer,” Morrison told the ABC. Morrison admitted the Indian consular officers were not at the centre at the time. The asylum seekers were flown to Nauru on Friday night. Morrison said there were only ever two options: the people would return to India or go to Nauru. He said slightly more than two-thirds of the people had not just come out of Sri Lanka to India. They had been resident in Tamil Nadu. They had been at schools, living there with family. “We had teenagers who were on that ship who were born in India.” Asked why the children were sent to Nauru when last week evidence was given to the Human Rights Commission inquiry into children in immigration detention that these places were not suitable for children, Morrison said: “Because offshore processing is a universal policy, and when you create exceptions to that, then you create an incentive for children to get on boats.” Disclosure Statement Michelle Grattan does not work for, consult to, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has no relevant affiliations.

Compare The Market pays penalty for alleged misleading health insurance advertising AUGUST 11, 2014: The Market Pty Ltd (Compare The Market) has paid a penalty of $10,200 following the issue of an infringement notice by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in relation to claims made in recent advertising promoting Compare the Market’s health insurance comparison service. Between 17 March and 19 May 2014, Compare The Market distributed a letterbox pamphlet in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, in which it claimed, “We now compare more health funds than any other website in Australia” and “Compare more health funds than anywhere else”. In fact, there were two other websites that compared the policies of more health insurance funds than Compare The Market, including the website operated by the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (www.privatehealth.gov.au Compare The Market also made the same or similar representations in other media, including its website, banner advertising, flyers, television infomercials and a digital display in its office foyer. “Many Australians have private health insurance and misleading representations could affect a significant number of consumers, who are considering switching or signing up to or health insurance providers and may rely on these representations,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said. “The infringement notice was issued in relation to the letterbox pamphlet as the ACCC had reasonable grounds to believe
that Compare The Market had made a false or misleading representation about the performance characteristics or benefits of its health insurance comparison service, in contravention of the Australian Consumer Law.” “Emerging consumer issues in the online marketplace, particularly in relation to comparator websites, are a current ACCC priority area as it is critical that consumers are able to make informed purchasing decisions,” Ms Court said. In Australia, there are over 30 insurers offering over 25,000 health insurance products. Commercial comparison websites generally only compare a selection of policies from a range of private health insurers. In comparison, the Ombudsman’s Private Health Website enables consumers to compare up-to-date health insurance policies from every private health insurer in Australia. For tips on purchasing a private health insurance policy or switching providers, go to: www.accc.gov.au/consumers/ health-home-car/private-health-insurance. The ACCC may issue an infringement notice where it has reasonable grounds to believe a person has contravened certain consumer protection provisions of the ACL. The payment of a penalty specified in an infringement notice is not an admission of a contravention of the ACL. The infringement notice issued to Compare The Market is available on the ACCC’s public register. - ACC.GOV.AU

Small Business Helpline receives 100,000 calls MINISTER for Employment, Senator Eric Abetz, said the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Small Business helpline, a Coalition Government election commitment, has received more than 100,000 calls since it was established in December last year. The priority service was created to provide reliable information to small business. “More than 100,000 people have received quick and accurate advice as a result of this helpline,” Senator Abetz said. Minister for Small Business, Bruce Billson, said the helpline was established to help small business people improve their knowledge and operate in line with relevant laws so they feel confident to grow, invest and create jobs. “In Australia we have more than two million employing small businesses and it’s great to see so many enterprising people using the helpline to seek fast expert advice,” Mr Billson said. Small business operators mainly called for assistance and information on wages, modern awards and conditions of employment under the Fair Work Act, the majority of callers were from the hairdressing, beauty, hospitality, trade and construction sectors. Senator Abetz said small business operators can rely on advice from the Fair Work Ombudsman without fear of prosecution should the information be incorrect. “This means that small business people can now have the confidence to call and get the right advice,” Senator Abetz said.

In addition to the Small Business Helpline, the Fair Work Ombudsman has also developed a Hiring New Employees Guide and given an assurance that small business people can rely on their advice. Senator Abetz said the abolition of the carbon tax - a $9 billion handbrake on the economy – would also benefit small business. Small business operators can call the dedicated Small Business Helpline on 13 13 94.
WHO meets on experimental Ebola drug use AS the world scrambles to stem the rapid spread of the killer Ebola virus, the World Health Organization hosted a meeting on Monday to discuss the ethics of using experimental drugs. The talks come as countries ravaged by the tropical disease in west Africa were gripped by panic, with drastic containment measures causing transport chaos, price hikes and food shortages, and stoking fears that people could die of hunger. Liberia, where Ebola has already claimed over almost 370 lives, placed a third province, Lofa, under quarantine on Monday after similar measures in Bomba and Grand Cape Mount. "From now on, no one will be allowed to go to Lofa, no one will come out of there," President Ellen Johnson Sirfleaf said. "We want to protect areas that have not been yet affected." There is currently no available cure or vaccine for Ebola, one of the deadliest viruses known to man, and with the death toll fast approaching 1,000, the WHO has declared the latest outbreak a global public health emergency. But the use of experimental drugs has opened up an intense ethical debate, and medical experts from around the world joined WHO-hosted discussions on Monday to draft guidelines for using nonauthorised medicines in emergencies such as Ebola. Two Americans and a Spanish priest infected with the virus while working with the sick in Africa are being treated with an untested drug called ZMapp, which has reportedly shown promising results. But the drug, made by private US company Mapp Pharmaceuticals, is still in an extremely early phase of development and had only been tested previously on monkeys. Ethical thing to do? ZMapp is in extremely short supply, but its use on Western aid workers has sparked controversy and demands that it be made available in Africa, where Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone are the hardest hit nations. "Is it ethical to use unregistered medicines to treat people, and if so, what criteria should they meet, and what conditions, and who should be treated?" said WHO assistant director-general Marie-Paule Kieny ahead of Monday's meeting. "What is the ethical thing to do?" While impoverished Guinea, Liberia and
www.indiantimes.com.au
Sierra Leone account for the bulk of the cases, the latest outbreak has spread further afield. Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has so far counted two deaths. Numerous countries have imposed a raft of emergency measures, including flight bans or screening of passengers. In the latest such move, the Ivory Coast announced on Monday 10 August it was banning all flights from the three hardesthit nations. And it said in the past few days it had turned back around 100 Liberians trying to flee across the border into Ivory Coast, which not reported any Ebola cases. Togo, which also has yet to confirm any cases, said it had strengthened health screenings, but people in the capital Lome are far from reassured. 'Everyone is afraid' "It's a general psychosis. Everyone is afraid. For the past three days, I haven't said greet anyone," student Paul Magnissou told AFP. Ebola causes fever and, in the worst cases, unstoppable bleeding, and can be fatal in 25 to 90 percent of cases, according to the WHO. The virus spreads by close contact with an infected person through bodily fluids such as sweat, blood and tissue. The latest outbreak -- which the WHO says is by far the worst since Ebola was discovered four decades ago -- has killed around 55-60 percent of those infected. On Saturday 9 August, the WHO said clinical trials of Ebola vaccines could begin within weeks and be ready for widespread use by early next year. In the meantime, there is only a handful of available treatments, and it remains unclear how quickly production could be ramped up. As WHO engages with pharmaceutical companies and governments to try to speed up the development process of vaccines and drugs, it is faced with a range of pressing ethical questions. Should anyone infected with the virus be given experimental treatments? And what about those who have been exposed, or who could easily become exposed due to their work, such as healthcare workers? Kieny said the session would only address the principles and provide urgent guidance to the WHO, and that another meeting would be held to go into further detail. AFP Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

Hyundai India puts breaks on export to Europe NEW DELHI: Are escalating manufacturing costs and uncertain labour relations taking a toll on Hyundai's plans to make India a global hub for small cars? The Korean car major has decided to discontinue small car exports to the coveted European region, opting to source from factories in Turkey and the Czech Republic, even if Indian operations contribute to 15% of its global sales volumes. Hyundai, which is the biggest car exporter from India and accounts for nearly 45% of total shipments, will stop the sale of Indiamade i10 and the newly-launched Elite i20 to the European countries, a move that will have an immediate impact on the compa-
ny's exports this year. The company, which exported 2.5 lakh units from India last year, expects this year's shipments at 1.9 lakh units, a decline of 24%. Rakesh Srivastava, senior VP (sales & marketing), said the lower overseas shipments will help free production capacity for the domestic market, which is crucial as the company is launching newer models. "We have already launched four new models over the last one year, and more are coming. While India still remains a strong export base, the first priority is the domestic market." However, Hyundai India's plans for this year show that the company
will be saddled with excess production volumes as the company hopes to sell 6 lakh units this year (domestic and exports) even as it has a production capacity for 6.8 lakh units. Company officials admitted that sourcing the models from Turkey and the Czech Republic is more cost-efficient than exporting from India. Higher wage bills and logistics have increased manufacturing costs in India, prompting many companies to have a re-look at the global sourcing plans. Hyundai has long been seeking a rail link from its factory near Chennai to the port, but not much headway has been made here.
CALD Youth Census Report A NEW report into the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and refugee youth in Australia says there’s a need for a continuing focus on English, education and training, and employment. The Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network commissioned Professor Graeme Hugo to prepare the report, which contributes to baseline knowledge about CALD and refugee youth in Australia. “It is important for policymakers at the Federal, State and Local area levels to understand the changing size and composition of its population. This report has focused on youth born in CALD and refugee countries between the ages of 12-24 and made comparisons with youth born in Australia at the state level to identify trends,” the report said. It must be remembered that there is great diversity of ethnicities within CALD and refugee popula-
tion groups which not only requires a range of differing need and services but also translates into different settlement and distribution patterns that need to be understood more fully. “However, it is useful to first assess them more broadly as population groups in order to understand how youth from CALD and refugee countries as new additions to the Australia’s population are benchmarked against the Australian born youth population,” the report said. When it comes to education, the report said, it was encouraging to see that youth born in CALD and refugee countries and with CALD and refugee ancestry generally had comparable rates of being enrolled at an educational institution. In fact, youth born in CALD countries and youth with CALD and refugee ancestry performed slightly better than their

Australian counterparts in the 1217 age. Overall, youth born in CALD and refugee countries and with CALD and refugee ancestry had higher participation rates as students in either a full or part-time capacity at an educational institution when compared to youth born in Australian. While it is considered that the population of youth born in CALD countries partly comprises international students, there is also some evidence that there is a stronger emphasis placed on education for migrant youth. The inverse relationship between employment and education is apparent for youth born in Australia which has a significantly higher proportion of its 18-24 group participating in the workforce compared to youth born in CALD and refugee countries. The report said this may be attrib-

Labour relations have also not been very comfortable. While things have been quite on this front for sometime now, the company's plant has seen major tensions in the past, which had also disrupted production. The volatile history may have also prompted the company to opt for other locations as the European markets are among the key export regions and Hyundai would like to avoid any reasons that may lead to delays. Srivastava said Hyundai is focusing on markets like Latin America, Middle-East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand for export.
uted to the Australian born population having more options available to them apart from post-secondary education compared to youth born in CALD and refugee countries. However, it said, for youth with CALD and refugee ancestry, while their engagement with the workforce was still lower than the Australian born population, it was higher than youth born in CALD and refugee countries. It said this was an indication of how over the generations different population groups begin to converge towards the Australia born average. The Federal Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Services, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, launched The CALD Youth Census Report. Broadly, she said, the report found that the rate of participation in education for CALD and refugee youth was comparable to Australian-born youth if not slightly higher, and there appeared to be strong emphasis placed on education among migrant youth.
“While the report notes that employment rates are lower for CALD and refugee youth compared to the Australian born population, this may be linked to the stronger emphasis placed on education and training,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said. Senator Fierravanti-Wells said over time and generational change, there was convergence towards the Australian born youth rate of employment. “The report reinforces the need for a continuing focus on English, education and training, and employment. “The Government believes that learning English, having a secure job and gaining a quality education are critical to migrant participation,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said. “This report will help us identify successes and areas which need more attention. It will allow us to make informed decisions about how we can best help this important target group.” - probonoaustralia.com.au

Indo-American community fights over hosting Modi in US AS the Indian-American community fights over hosting the reception for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York next month, the BJP dispatched Ram Madhav to the United States to quell battling egos. New York’s landmark indoor arena Madison Square Garden has been booked and the community expects to attract as many as 20,000 people to attend the largestever gathering for an Indian leader in the US. There are also plans to simulcast the three-hour event scheduled for September 28 in several US cities. As Chandrakant Patel, president of the Overseas Friends of BJP, USA, said, “After the visa denial issue, the Diaspora is enthusiastically looking forward to his event. It should be a historic programme.” The estimated budget for the community’s celebration of Modi’s visit is $1.5 million, which will be raised by donations. The event will be held under the auspices of the newly-formed Indian American Community Foundation, USA. The BJP’s global con-
venor of overseas chapters, Vijay Jolly, is also expected to be in the US later this month to “mobilise NRIs” for the event. An event of this scale and nature is a first in the US. Former PM Manmohan Singh attended much smaller gatherings of the community, held in hotels. His predecessor Atal Behari Vajpayee had been felicitated in New York in 2003, at an event at the Jacob Javits Center in midtown Manhattan, which drew a crowd of about 3,000. However, despite the ambitious plans to welcome Modi, there has been dissension within the ranks, with many community elders from the New York/New Jersey area aggrieved at the responsibility for the event being given over to Illinois-based Bharat Barai, reported to be a friend of Modi. In fact, it was at one preparatory event in New Jersey last month that resentment became public with some community members trying to physically remove Barai from the stage, according to local media.

THE government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the next Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat in January 2015. As the year 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the return of the greatest ‘Pravasi’ of all, Mahatma Gandhi, from South Africa, PBD 2015 would be celebrated in a grand way. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on the 9th January every year to mark the contribution of the NRIs and Overseas Indian communities in the development of India. January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate this occasion since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa and then led India’s freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever. The annual PBD convention was first initiated by the NDA government of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003.
These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of the land of their ancestors for mutually beneficial activities. During the event, individuals of exceptional merit are honoured with the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award to appreciate their role in India’s growth. The Award is made to individuals from across the world who the Indian Government feel have brought honour to India through their endeavours and achievements in another country. In this year’s PBD held in Delhi in January the UK’s Justice Minister and Member of Parliament, Shailesh Vara, was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman 2014. - HT GOPIO members will receive their discounted registration, delegates wishing to take part from should contact GOPIO International Coordinator Umesh Chandra on 0421 388 465.
Next Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas – London GIVEN the size and importance of the Indian Diaspora in the UK, it has been decided by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs to hold the next Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (RPBD) in London in October 2014. A detailed programme is being worked out and will be announced in due course. This will be the first such event being held in London. Apart from the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held in India in January every year, RPBD is organized to allow participation of the Indian Diaspora who are unable to attend the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in India. This initiative began in 2007, and so far, 7 Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas have been held at New York, Singapore, The Hague,
Durban, Toronto, Mauritius and Sydney. Source Indian High Commission London
GOPIO International to remember Indian soldiers of WW1
IN THE killing fields of Gallipoli in 1915, Australia and New Zealand found their national identities. This Independence Day, India, which has been sprinting along the superpower track, will find an opportunity to pause for a moment to remember the 1.3 million Indians who fought in the First World War. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Great War, a global organization of NRIs wants to declare August 15 as Remembrance Day in memory of the Indian soldiers. They have chosen this day because “there could be no better day to be free of our old inhibitions about our colonial past

and honour our own people whose sacrifices also contributed to India’s freedom”. “This will be our Remembrance Day. We have attended such memorial functions in France where heads of different states converge and the civilian turnout is quite big. But we don’t see a single Indian face there—quite an irony, given the fact that 1, 40,000 Indians defended French soil from German aggression in the Great War, and many never returned home. That’s why we, NRIs from France, came up with this project,” says a representative of Global Organization for People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), France. - TOI Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

Finding Peace… DEAR BIT readers, Thank you for joining us on the journey of Inspired Indians to pursue true purpose for your life. We believe that every person on this planet has a unique purpose; and our priority should be seek and know that purpose. Today let us talk about ‘peace’, the whole world seems agree we need it, but this world can’t show us where to find peace. If you want to find a precious pearl, you know where to go. But do you know where to find true peace? Do you know how to stay in peace in this troubled world? 32 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, August, 2014
If you really want to pursue peace, read on. Let us together explore this priceless virtue called ‘peace’. Because I believe you can find true peace in this world of wars and conflicts. Your million-dollar home or business can’t give you peace. Your job or your qualifications can’t teach about peace. But if you seek peace with all your heart and mind you will find it and will treasure it forever. Peace is the result of an agreement between two or more parties. It is a firm and faithful agreement, which seeks the welfare and security of all people involved. It also called covenant between the parties who were separated due to broken and troubled relationships. All humanity has lost its peace when it rebelled against its creator God. Romans 3:23 teach us, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. That means, in all humanity, not single person was found with the perfection and purity. God the Creator of the entire universe created mankind with perfect purity and peace. But man broke that relationship with creator by the act of disobedience. You can read this shocking story in the third chapter of the Genesis, the inspired Word of The Lord. Sin is a serious matter, whether it is a small or big sin, the peace will be replaced with shame and fear and conflict and confusion. Where can you find peace? Your mind is restless and relentless thoughts cloud your heart. www.indiantimes.com.au
itive, are declared by archaeologists on the irrefutable evidence of geological findings to have had a glorious past. It was no way inferior in the lustre of its development to the present day scientific glamour of any up-to-date civilised country of the world. These geological discoveries testify not only the fact that humans existed tens of millions of years ago, but also that their primitive life was to a very high degree cultured and refined, so much so that he was proficient in some of the most modern civilised arts. If god had not instructed the savages in the beginning of creation and similarly the sages had not simultaneously transmitted knowledge to other all the people would have remained absolutely ignorant. Human beings were endowed with knowledge by the Supreme Being in the beginning of the creation through the Rishis who transmitted it to their future generations. It is said that god has endowed us with a conscience to discriminate between right and wrong, good and bad and virtue and vice. In that case every man will decide things as dictated by his own conscience, influenced by surroundings. The verdict will vary from man to man. Without a universal code of conduct issued by one central unerring authority, no society can function smoothly. Granting, but not admitting, that some people were able to rely on their conscience and inspiration for discriminating between rights and wrong, it is difficult to acquire knowledge of the ultimate human end, the true nature of god, of even Prakriti, the nature of freedom or liberation. Such things cannot he held by human intellect. Hence the necessity of relaxation in the beginning of creation. But we can choose to break this status by learning to make right decisions. Know that you have the power to position yourself in the path of peace. The writer of Psalm 37 gives us simple and powerful insight into the blessing that the peace brings to us. Psalm 37:37; “ Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits who loves peace.” We can train your mind and heart to dwell in peace when you begin to understand love of God. When you begin to understand God has paid a ransom to give us peace of mind and heart. For the wages of sin is death, but free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. When we confess with our mouth and believe in our hearts that Jesus restored the relationship with God the Father, we open the door for peace. The Word of God is clear and simple in guiding us to the peace that will stay with you and also bringing hope and joy. If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace and work hard to maintain it. (1Peter 3:10-11) You deserve to dwell in peace everyday, when you learn to make peace with Jesus by trusting in His love and grace. IMPORTANCE OF SALAT-O-SALAM (upon Prophet) DAROOD SHAREEF Prepared by: Imam M. Aslam
ALL please to Allah (swt), the most merciful, the most gracious and the cherisher of all the worlds. Peace and blessing be upon the Beloved of Allah Ta’ala. I would like to take this opportunity to explain the significance of reading/sending salawat on our beloved Prophet Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa salam. * Salawaat-O-Salaam: The excellence of Durood Shareef for the Ummah as explained in the Holy Quran and Ahadith * What is Durood Shareef and the importance of Durood Shareef * The excellence of Durood Shareef as explained in the Ahadith * Respect that should be accorded when reciting the Durood Shareef THE EXCELLENCE OF DUROOD SHAREEF FOR THE UMMAH AS EXPLAINED IN THE HOLY QURAN AND AHADITH The message of Allah Ta’ala to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) has come down to us in the form of the Holy Quran and the teachings of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) have reached us in the form of the Ahadith. Let us see what both the Holy Quran and Ahadith say about Durood Shareef (Salawat upon our beloved Prophet): “Innal llaha wa Malaa’ikatahu Yu salluna allan nabiyi. Ya Ayyuhal lazeena aamanu sallu alaihi wasallimu tasleema.” (Surah Ai-Ahzab, Verse 56) Almighty Allah says: “Surely Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). O you who believe! Send Blessings (Durood) and Salutations (Salaams) on the Prophet with worthy Salutation”. (Surah al-Ahzab: 56) In this verse of the Holy Quran, Almighty Allah, His Malaa’ikah and the Muslims have been mentioned as sending Durood(salatu o salam) upon Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). So, Durood Shareef is actually “a Du’a in praise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim).” Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) said: “He who reads a single Durood upon me, Almighty Allah blesses him ten times, ten of his sins are forgiven, and he is increased ten times in stages (internally). (Mishkaat) Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) also narrates that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) said: “On the Day of Qiyamah, the closest to me from among the people will be those who have read the most amount of Durood Shareef”. (Tirmidhi) It is now evident that the recitation of Durood Shareef (Salawat) is in perfect obedience to the Divine Command and in complete conformity with the teachings of Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) of Islam. There is no scope to choose anything else when we have with us the words of Allah Ta’ala and His Apostle, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). The Commands of Allah Ta’ala and the Rasulallah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) to recite Salawat-oSalaam is unconditional i.e. nowhere in Quran or Hadiths, Allah or His Messenger (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) mentioned in what position we have to send Salawat and Salam and how loud?. It is entirely up to believers in what position and volume he or she invokes Salawaat-o-Salaam, whether while sitting or laying on bed/floor or standing still or walking, it does not matter. Since we respect our beloved prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) the most after Allah Ta’ala, it is the demand of this respect that we stand up and send Salat-o-Salam to the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) WHAT IS DUROOD SHAREEF AND THE IMPORTANCE OF DUROOD SHAREEF Divine blessings on Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) is the highest and the most meritorious act in our Deen. This “Divine Blessings” is called Durood Shareef. When Almighty Allah sends Durood and Salaams upon Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim), He is actually blessing him. When the Malaa’ikah and the Muslims send Durood and Salaams to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim), they are actually showing Almighty Allah their respect for the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). Muslims hope that, through the blessings of the Durood and Salaams, Almighty Allah will forgive them of their sins and increase their status in this world and in the Aakirah. The Malaa’ikah hope that Almighty Allah will increase their status. Durood is a sure means of Allah Ta’ala granting blessings, peace, prosperity and favours of great magnitude on one who recites Durood Shareef on the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). The reciter of Durood Shareef receives all the benefits in this world and utmost gain in the next world with addition to the love of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). The invocation of Blessings on the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) is styled in Arabic as “Salawat”, in Persian as “Durood”, and in Urdu as “Salawat-o-Salaam”. The regular recitation of Durood Shareef on Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) lifts up our hearts on to a plane of comprehension where we gaze in our new found peace and moral armour. The reciter of Durood Shareef will, after some time, come to realize by himself that it is the spontaneous outpouring of his heart before the Great Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) of Islam, whose love and attachment is needed to get all the present day problems solved and obtain mercy in the next world. The more Durood Shareef we recite, the greater the gain and benefit will be achieved in both the worlds. Hazrat Shaikh-e-Akbar Mo’inuddin ibn Arabi (radi Allahu anhu) has stated that, “Those who claim to love and revere the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) should increase their recital of the Durood Shareef in patience and perseverance until, through the mercy of Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim), they have the opportunity of witnessing his blessed countenance”. The special and exclusive aspect of this prayer is that

Durood Shareef is immediately accepted by Allah Ta’ala. No one can doubt its acceptance, as Durood Shareef is being recited by Allah Ta’ala too. Not only this, but He has revealed this secret in the Holy Quran by saying: “Wara fa’na laka zikrah “ (Surah AlInshirah, V-4) .” Translation: “And We have exalted for you your remembrance. Moomineen are a very fortunate people. Allah Ta’ala chose for them the name of Deen as a religion, declared to be comprehensive and final for mankind. The person chose to deliver this message in this specific form and extra-ordinary style of love and hope was the most beloved of Allah Ta’ala and became the Light of Divinity to be shed upon the entire universe. This Light devastated all the domains of darkness and depression. By reciting Durood Shareef (Salawat) we invite Light and drive away all darkness from our inner soul. Our mind becomes soft and love saturated. If there is softness in everything, it tends beauty to it. People become ugly owing to lack of this essential beauty of the inner part of the mind. This ugliness cannot be glossed over by any amount of cosmetics. It is the Durood Shareef on the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) which works wonders. In the same manner, the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) taught us Durood Shareef to attain salvation, perfect peace and maximum gain in this world as well as the next. The soul is the soil where the faith of Allah is to be implanted firmly and faithfully which requires continuous recitation of Durood Shareef to thrive and flourish. We have been told by Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) that Durood Shareef is itself Light and when Light enters the soul every aspiration is achieved and every goal is won. Nothing remains thereafter to worry about. Human spirit today is depressed everywhere and mankind has come to the edge of destruction, decay and devastation. Everyone is engulfed in untold miseries and tragedies of a very great magnitude. Troubles and tortures, pain, poverty, hunger, ill-health, frustrations and accidents have broken the back of a human being. All this can evaporate with the recitation of Durood Shareef on the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) who has clearly proclaimed that Durood Shareef is the panacea of all ills and that if any one comes across a calamity he should recite Durood Shareef in the maximum number. Allah Ta’ala has promised that if anyone recites Durood only once, He showers ten blessings on the reciter immediately thanked Allah Ta’ala and immediately began reciting Durood Shareef on the Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). From the above fact it is quite clear that Allah Ta’ala has given orders even to his Ambiya to recite Salawat on the last and final Prophet of Islam, and that Durood Shareef is not only panacea and a solution to the ills of this world but in the next too. The highest blessings which Islam has conferred on man is the concept of Tauheed or Unity of Allah in its purest form. This has been furnished to mankind through Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim), the last of the Prophets. It is a cardinal duty of every Muslim man and woman, young and old to entertain the highest respect, regard, love and esteem for the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) and his family. It should be clear that obedience to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) is always to be charged with intense love and highest regard for him, for it is through love and esteem that truth can be comprehended and communion with the Creator can be vouch-safed. In fact, love is the motive force, reverence dissolves and implicit obedience to the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) which is the natural outcome. It is therefore incumbent on those who love him, to pray to Allah Ta’ala and His Angels in wishing for him peace according to the Divine Command. This will reshape the life which is otherwise infested with turmoil. The reciter will get countless and matchless benefits in both the Worlds and can claim to be the lover of Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). As Muslims we should recite Durood Shareef in the Arabic language. Islam seeks to create a unified outlook and it is in the Arabic language alone which welds all Muslims into one great brotherhood. Besides, Arabic is the language of Heaven, it is the language of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim), it is the language of the Angels and it is the language of Hazrat Abu-Bakr, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Uthman and Hazrat Ali (radi Allahu Anhumma). The daily recitation of Durood Shareef has a tremendous effect on the human head, heart, mind and person. It purifies thoughts and intensifies actions. It makes passages for perfect peace and personal satisfaction. THE EXCELLENCE OF DUROOD SHAREEF AS EXPLAINED IN THE AHADITH “Hadith” is an Arabic word which means “Holy Sayings”. It is the narration of all the affectionate words of advice uttered by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) from time to time. These sayings (Ahadith) are instructions offered for the guidance of mankind, and to follow them is as important as daily prayers. The famous books of Hadith are the following: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Muwatta, Nisaai’, Ibn-Majah, Darmi, Baihaqi and Miskhaat Shareef. Imam Bukhari (radi Allahu anhu), the compiler of Bukhari Shareef, took the greatest and painstaking precautions in making his collections of Ahadith and exerted to his utmost to achieve all accuracy and reliability as possible. Hence, Ahadith quoted by Imam Bukhari (radi Allahu anhu) and his work on Ahadith stands as one of the wonders of intellectual achievement in Islamic History. He wrote all Ahadith in the sacred Haram of Madina Munawwarah. It is, therefore, that most of the Ahadith have been taken from the book of Bukhari Shareef. Important Ahadith of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) have been included here for the betterment, benefit guidance and gain of the readers of this book. If followed, the reader of these sayings will receive a permit to Paradise even in this world. Every saying opens door to Divine favour and sure success. * For every Durood Shareef that you recite, ten sins are forgiven, ten good deeds are entered into your
sheet of actions and ten position are upgraded. * Allah showers ten blessings on the man who recites a Durood. 3. The first man who will meet the Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) on the Day of Judgement will be that person who had recited the Durood maximum number of times in his life time. * Those who recite Durood in maximum number will be nearest and dearest to the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) in the next world. * If anyone is involved in a difficulty then he must recite countless number of Durood Shareefs. * Reciting Durood Shareef eradicates poverty and hunger. * Reciting excessive Durood Shareef brings purity. * Reciting maximum number of Durood Shareef is full compensation of all sins. * Anyone who recites excessive Durood Shareef in this world will be safe and sound in the next world. * When a prayer is made to Allah it is never accepted unless praise of Allah Ta’ala and Durood Shareef on the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) is first of all recited. * Those who recite Durood quite often will see Divine Light on the dark Day of Judgement. * Three persons will be under the cool shade and the favours of Allah Ta’ala on the Doom’s Day. One who kept the Holy Prophet’s (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) Sunnah alive, one who removed difficulty of a fellow being and one who recited maximum number of Durood Shareef in his life time. * When you forget anything and your memory fails to recollect it, then recite Durood, you will remember the forgotten thing. * Reciting Durood in this world is rewarding in the next. * The reciter of 10 Duroods in the morning and 10 in the evening will receive the help(shafaat) of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) on the Day of Judgement. * One who recites Durood Shareef near the shrine of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) is heard by him there and then alone. * Anyone who recites Durood is just as one who purchased a slave and freed him. * Anyone who wants to meet his Allah with a happy face must recite countless number of Durood Shareef. * Reward equivalent to a big mountain (Uhud) is given to one who recites one Durood. * All people will be presented to the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) with their habits, natures and distinct manner, so it is obligatory for a man to recite maximum number of Durood. * Allah is Great and Almighty to forgive all sins of the reciter during the day and night when he recites Durood Shareef. * If any one meets in a tragedy, he should recite Durood Shareef in countless numbers. * Reciting Durood is like giving something in charity. * Reciting maximum number of Durood kills all hardships. * Durood Shareef in countless number on Friday, as it is presented to me (the Holy Prophet). * Anyone who recites Durood will overcome all their troubles. * If the name of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) is mentioned and one who hears it but does not recite Durood Shareef, understand that he has forgotten the path to Paradise. He is a miser. * I pray for all those who recite Durood on me”, said the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim). * If any one recites Durood Shareef from any place, any part of the world from any distance, it actually reaches the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) immediately. Allah Ta’ala has appointed several Angels who are given exclusive duty to collect all Durood Shareef and present the same before the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) immediately. * Angels of Allah shower 70 blessings on a man who recites Durood once. * Whenever you hear the call of prayers (Azaan) you should recite Durood. * Wherever you are, from any quarter of the world, you must recite Durood as it reaches the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim).* anyone who hears the name of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) and does not recite Durood on him will not see the beautiful face of Prophet (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) on the Day of the Judgement. * Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) reports that Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) said, “The real miser is he in whose presence I am mentioned and then he fails to recite Salat on me”. * The Durood Shareef that is recited by the person is written with a Golden Pen on a Silver tablet by the Angels. The Angels then present this Durood Shareef to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) and proclaim, “O Habeeb of Allah! The son of such and such a person has presented this gift in your majestic court”. RESPECT THAT SHOULD BE ACCORDED WHEN RECITING THE DUROOD SHAREEF Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa Salim) said: “Without doubt, there is an Angel of Almighty Allah whom Allah has given power to listen to the voices of all the people. Whenever any person reads the Durood Shareef, this Angel delivers the Durood Shareef to me. I then plead to Almighty Allah for the person to receive ten blessings for reading a single Durood Shareef”. (Jami’ us Sagheer) How should one recite the Durood Shareef? What should be the persons condition and the conditions of his environment? The following points should be taken into account when reciting Durood Shareef:* It should be read with utmost humility and respect. * The clothes of the reciter should be clean and free from all impurity. * The place where the Durood Shareef is to be read should be clean. * It is more superior to be in a state of Wudhu while reciting the Durood Shareef. * It is better to sit in the Tashahudd position as you would sit when in Salaah and recite the Durood Shareef with concentration and the respect due to it. * If possible, one should have sweet fragrance around the place. * The reciter should try and understand the meaning of the Durood Shareef. * One should possess a clean and untainted intention. One should read with the sole intention of pleasing Almighty Allah and Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Salim). * The person should not be involved in worldly talks. * A person should try his level best to follow the example or Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Salim). * When reading Durood Shareef, you should try and imagine that you are sitting in the august presence of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Salim). Utmost respect and reverence should be displayed. * Whenever one hears or recites the Durood Shareef, it should be read and written in full. It is also preferable to kiss one’s thumb and rub them over one’s eyes when hearing the name of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Salim). * When the reading of the Durood

Shareef is completed one should praise Allah Ta’ala that he has given you the opportunity of reading such a great Zikr as the Durood Shareef. * Whenever one takes the name of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Salim), one should use titles of respect and reverence. * As an advantage one should count on one’s fingers as Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sall Allahu alaihi wa Salim) often encouraged this practice because on the Day of Qiyamah those same fingers will bear witness at the time when they are questioned. * Recite Durood Shareef wherever you are (not in the bathroom or toilet) and during any occasion. Benefits of Reciting Salaat-Salaam (Durood Shareef) Listed below are some of the many benefits a person receives by reciting Durood Shareef: * Almighty Allah sends ten mercies upon a person who recites Durood once. * Ten of his sins are forgiven. * The persons rank is raised by ten degrees. * Ten rewards are written for him. * There is acceptance of Dua where Durood is recited at the beginning & at the end. * The person will be blessed with the intercession of Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). * Almighty Allah will forgive his sins. * Almighty Allah is pleased with him. * The person will be nearer to the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) on the day of Judgement. * The person will have all his worries removed in this world and the hereafter. HADITH RECORDED IN TABRANI ON THE AUTHORITY OF ABDULLAH IBN ABBAS Abu Hurairah Radiallahu anhu reports that the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever recites the following Durood eighty times immediately after Asr Salaat on Friday, before standing up from his place, Allah will forgive eighty years of sins and grant him the reward equivalent to eighty years of worship.” (Allahumma salli alaa muhammadinin nabiyyil ummiyyi wa-ala aalihi wasallim tasleema) Translation: O Allah bless Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, and his family and grant them best of peace. HADITH RECORDED IN JAME SAGEER ON THE AUTHORITY OF ABU HURAIRAH Virtues of reading Darood Shareef To send blessings on the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) is one of the highest and most praiseworthy acts in our Deen. This “Divine Blessing” is called Darood Shareef. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) says: “Surely Allah and His Angels send blessings on the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), O you who believe! Send Blessings (Darood) and Salutations (Salaams) on the Prophet with worthy Salutation”. (Surah al-Ahzab: 56) Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Mas’sud (RA) narrates that the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: “On the Day of Judgement, the closest to me from among the people will be those who have read the most amount of Darood Shareef”. (Tirmidhi Shareef) This salatu salam is read at the end of programme collectively in the Aqeedat o muhabbat of our beloved prophet. Health Beauty Wellbeing South Asian traditional healers Family violence response must tackle all forms of abuse By Thilliar Varnakulasingham
STUDIES suggest that only a few developing countries have the resources to develop a health service based on the expensive Western model. Therefore, it is not surprising that traditional medicine remains the main and most accessible source of healthcare for many people in rural areas in the developing countries. Thousands of years before modern medicine provided scientific evidence for the mind-body connection, the sages of India developed Ayurveda. It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vibrant and healthy while realizing their full human potential. South Asians use a wide variety of traditional healers and healing practices. The popular ones are Ayurveda, Unani, Sahaja, Reiki Shamanism, Sidda medicine, homeopathy, and naturopathy. South Asians in the West have brought with them their ways of healing. These ways of healing appeal to both the first and second generation members of their communities. Ayurveda is composed of two syllables. “Ayu “means life and “veda” means knowledge. Ayurveda literally means the science of life. A long-standing desire to assist others and an interest in healing practices proved a significant motivating factor on their path to becoming traditional healers. Ayurvedic physicians conceptualize, assess and diagnose illnesses through a holistic approach that interrogates the Cartesian body-mind division that underpins allopathic medicine. South Asian physicians construct and perceive the person as a whole, where the mental, physical and social selves are not divided into separate categories
(Kakar, 1982; Laungani 2006; Roland, 1988). In accordance with a holistic approach, the healers have been prescribing herbal and homeopathic medicines of various kinds. Traditional healers play a role in preventive, curative, rehabilitative and psychosocial care of patients (Setswe, 1999). The literature on South Asian traditional healing, indigenous medicine and Hindu spirituality dates back to the ancient texts of the four Vedas- Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Ayurveda emphasizes re-establishing balance in the body through diet, lifestyle, exercise and body cleansing and on the health of the mind, body and spirit. In terms of collaboration and integration with Western healthcare practitioners, the South Asian traditional healers are divided among themselves about such relationships. Ayurvedic practitioners refer patients to allopathic practitioners, but allopathic practitioners rarely make referral to Ayurvedic practitioners. Every science has its own advantages and disadvantages and limitations. Some people wish that if allopathic and Ayurvedic practitioners work hand in hand in the same clinic, they can discover the client’s condition and do things with an integrated approach. This is not likely to occur even in India, because traditional healers and modern doctors do not understand each other because they learn different things. While many traditional approaches have not changed very much from the earliest origins of practice, it is very important that much research exploring the use of traditional healing should be undertaken. Queensland pets at risk of dehydration
NEW survey results from leading pet product expert, PetSafe® reveal more than a third (37 per cent) of Queensland pet owners do not know how much they should be giving their pets to drink. The surprising results means more than 400,000 cats and dogs could be at risk of dehydration. Angela Critchley, a spokesperson for PetSafe, said the survey results raised serious concerns about pets’ wellbeing in Queensland. “Dehydration can potentially result in serious health issues for pets including urinary tract infections, kidney disease and, in very extreme cases, death, especially in the harsh Australian climate,” Ms Critchley said. “While most pet owners know how much to feed their pets, little is said about how much a pet should drink and it can be very easy for an owner to lose track and forget to refill a water bowl.” PetSafe recommends that access to good clean water is essential to cats and dogs at all times, but it’s particularly important when it’s warm. Well-hydrated pets can better keep themselves cool compared to those that are dehydrated, which in turn helps fight off other heat related illnesses such as heatstroke.
However, in modern day busy households, making sure your pet has a constant supply of fresh water may prove challenging. It is therefore important for owners to set up a reliable and safe water source for their pets. “Simply being proactive and placing bowls of water in several locations or investing in a pet drinking fountain will ensure pets have access to clean, fresh water all day long and avoid the serious health risks associated with dehydration,” Ms Critchley comments. “It can be as simple as using pet products like PetSafe Drinkwell® Fountains. The Fountains create free-flowing streams of water which entice your pet to drink more throughout the day. “Dogs especially tend to find still water sources unappealing as they can get stagnant and old, so having an alternative drinking supply means they have access to new, fresh water even when no one is at home.” Designed with convenience in mind, the PetSafe Health & Wellness category includes a wide range of products to help owners provide the best care for their pets even when they can’t be there.

• Reducing family violence requires targeting all forms of abuse. Twin Design/Shutterstock
Authors Rosemary Purcell Associate Professor & Deputy Director of the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science at Swinburne University of Technology
James Ogloff Professor of Forensic Behavioural Science, Director of the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science at Swinburne University of Technology
The term “domestic violence” typically conjures images of physical assaults perpetrated by men against women and children in the home. But beneath the tip of the iceberg of severe violence lie a myriad of other damaging behaviours, including psychological and financial abuse, and emotional manipulation. These are the less “visible” forms of abuse, but should not be overlooked or trivialised simply because their effects are less easily seen. To truly address family violence we need to target all forms of violent and abusive behaviour irrespective of who commits it. Violence Intimate partner violence occurs in relationships irrespective of age, sexual orientation, gender, income or ethnicity. Research shows that adolescents, young people and adults are victimised in intimate relationships, and domestic violence is observed in both same-sex and opposite-sex relationships. The nature of intimate partner violence appears to differ in important ways in relation to gender. Women are more likely than men to experience serious physical assaults that result in injury, and are more likely to be subjected to such acts on a recurrent basis. And in cases of family homicide, women are overrepresented as victims compared to men. This pattern is also evident for severe (but non-lethal) physical assaults. But when it comes to other forms of violence, such as being slapped, pushed or shoved by a partner, throwing an object, or being hit by an object, international research shows that roughly equal proportions of male and female partners engage in intimate partner violence. Other forms of abuse Australian data is not available, but Canadian research also indicates that the rates of emotional manipulation by a partner do not differ substantially according to gender. Emotional abuse can involve coercive control (creating an atmosphere of fear or intimidation), humiliating or degrading the partner, monitoring their behaviour, and making threats to harm loved ones. Other forms of non-physical forms of abuse include financial control. These types of abuse may not cause physical harm, but are damaging nonetheless. People’s self-confidence becomes shattered, anxiety levels rise, and feelings of learnt helplessness ensue. Unsurprisingly, it is often the case that physical violence cooccurs with other non-physical forms of control and abuse. What do we know about the perpetrators? Popular culture suggests that the “profile” of a domestic abuser can be captured by a checklist of key characteristics, such as
www.indiantimes.com.au
jealousy, control, manipulation, deception and charm. While these features are present in many cases, the “possessive partner” stereotype is too simplistic. A complex range of attributes and circumstances contribute to someone acting in a violent or abusive manner. These include: • Witnessing or experiencing family violence as a child • Personal, cultural or peer beliefs that support the use of aggression or violence • Poor language (verbal) skills, which can dispose people to resolving disputes or managing their frustration with fists rather than words • Alcohol and drug use, which can lead people to act more aggressively • Mental health problems, such as depression or chronic stress • Dysfunctional personalities • Financial difficulties and other stressors. Many of these characteristics can be modified in treatment or other behaviour change programs, which is often the most successful way of bringing the violence to an end. What do we know about the victims? Women and men who are subjected to intimate partner violence report a range of mental and physical health problems, chief among them fear and anxiety, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress, such as feeling emotionally numb, detached from others, and hyper-vigilant. Many victims also report increased alcohol or other substance use to help them deal with their distress. Research shows that the more frequent or recurring the abuse, the greater the mental health impacts. Thoughts of suicide are not uncommon for victims who may perceive no other means to escape their abuser. The effects of recurring victimisation within an intimate relationship can also damage the victim’s social or occupational functioning. Many Australian workplaces have formalised policies or procedures to deal with family violence and to better support employees who are victims of this crime. Not just a ‘domestic’ issue Terms such as “domestic violence” have not been helpful since they inadvertently connote that the behaviour is not the business of others. To protect those at risk of harm, we need to move away from the notion that violence within intimate partnerships and families is somehow a private matter. As a mature society, we must give a clear message that violence and other types of abuse within families – as with other areas in society – must be eradicated. Only with ongoing dialogue, research, and effective strategies and interventions can we begin to tackle this problem. Saffron – Get beautiful skin naturally milk cream and steep overnight. Blend this in the morning with your fingers and apply on the affected area. This will lighten your tan effectively. It has the added benefit of adding a glow to your skin as well. (d) To tone the skin: A toner is used after cleansing the skin. If you want a natural one, mix saffron in rose water and let it give its colour to it. After that, dab it on the face with a cotton ball. Many women add strands of saffron to their hot bath water and bathe in it.

HEY Girls, saffron has been used as a beauty ingredient for a very long time. It has magical properties to heal the skin and is used albeit sparingly when making face packs. It is possibly the most expensive of spices but saffron has qualities that justify its value. An excellent agent to purify skin, it also has anti-bacterial properties to cure acne. There are many who claim it improves complexion by lightening the skin tone. What it does is improve the quality of your skin by removing the dirt and impurities. The only drawback, if any, is its cost but on the plus side, you only need a pinch of Kesar to reap in its benefits. (a) For glowing skin: The skin tends to get dry and dull in the winters. In order to get its glow back, make a pack using saffron and honey. Take a spoonful of honey and add a few strands of kesar in it. Mix it and apply on the face.
The hydrating properties of honey and the healing properties of saffron improve blood circulation adding the glow back to the skin. (b) For skin brightening: Soak a few strands of saffron in milk for a good halfan-hour to let the milk get its colour and other benefits. Add a teaspoon of sandalwood powder to this and apply the pack on your face and neck. Keep it for 15-20 minutes before washing it off. Regular use of this pack will help improve and brighten your skin tone. (c) To remove tan: Soak saffron in

Acne on dark skin can be treated
Laser Treatments
ACNE is a very common issue for people of Indian descent. People with darker skin tend to be left with more scarring or “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation“, which can be very difficult to treat. In addition, darker skinned people frequently suffer from a higher incidence of keloid (thickened, bulky, hyperpigmented) scarring from acne. However, acne can be simple to treat and prevent, not just with people of Indian descent but people of every ethnicity, because the underlying cause is the same in everyone. At the first sign that acne is becoming a problem, it is strongly recommended that expert management of the condition begin before scarring occurs, so prompt professional action is a critical first step. Politicians hold $300m in property, so how should they influence housing policy? By Dallas Rogers Research Fellow - Urban Research Centre at University of Western Sydney - theconversation.com AUSTRALIAN politicians are keen property owners. Data compiled by Lindsay David, Deakin University’s Philip Soos and Paul Egan from the parliamentary register of members’ interests shows the 226 members of federal parliament (both houses) have an ownership stake in some 563 properties. While these properties may be jointly owned with a spouse, this is an average of 2.5 properties per member. In 2013, the 76 members of the Senate had 202 property holdings and the 150 members of the House of Representatives had 361 property holdings. Top of the leader board is National Party Senator Barry O’Sullivan with a portfolio of 50 properties. David Gillespie follows with 18 and Palmer United Party Senator Clive Palmer has a seemingly conservative 13, although the total value of Palmer’s properties is unknown (see table). The estimated total value of these properties is said to be around A$298 million. This was calculated by multiplying the 563 properties by the median dwelling price of $530,000, as of July 2014. If these properties are located in major cities or other high-value areas the property holding could be substantially higher. Astrology Aries - March 21 - April 20 You will be very imaginative and innovative this month. Though in the initial stages things may appear to be dull, you will pick up momentum by the end of the first week. Your creative ideas will be much appreciated by your peers and superiors alike. Though you will be totally focused on work, your growth may not meet your expectations, but Ganesha advises you not to get disappointed and carry on undaunted, and the rewards will come forth. Your eloquence will also peak and you shall win many hearts with your wholesome praise of others' abilities. On the romantic front, though, one wrong word, and your relationship may go into a tailspin. So Ganesha advises you to be extremely careful not to hurt the feelings of your beloved, and not to make petty disputes an ego issue. Avoid speculative activities. Taurus - April 21 - May 22 Ganesha predicts a rather difficult month for you. There will be many ups and downs along the way, and you may feel that you are not making any concrete headway towards your goals. Under the circumstances, Ganesha advises you to focus on long-term goals, take petty setbacks in your stride, and peg on relentlessly. Also be a little flexible as it will go a long way in keeping relations with your colleagues smooth, because with good teamwork you can achieve your company's goals easily. This month is auspicious for businessmen, so you may go ahead with your plans of expansion without any hesitation, and don't let the plans of your rival companies impede you. On the personal front, too, this month is going to be very eventful. You shall spend a lot of quality time with your friends and loved ones. Gemini - May 23 - Jun 21 You will be happy and jovial this month, foretells Ganesha. Wherever your go you will spread joy and laughter, and your very presence will be enough to change a negative atmosphere into a positive one. In such a state of mind, no matter how difficult the work or challenges you are facing may be, you shall achieve everything in a breeze. If you are hunting for a more lucrative job, you might just get lucky this month. Employers may have a tough time dealing with stubborn employees and will have to find some innovative methods to keep them motivated. On the financial front, unexpected expenses and investments will keep you occupied. You may come up with a novel way of increasing your income, which may look good on paper but may not really be very practical. Take good care of your health.
to purchase a first home. This would not put downward pressure on first home buyer housing stock. In fact, it could diversify the investment pool and lead to upward pressure. According to the register, Independent Senator for South Australia Nick Xenophon has a portfolio of eight investment properties. A spokesperson for Senator Xenophon said the register was outdated, but confirmed the Senator owns four investment units and his super fund also owns a property (under management). The correct figure is expected to be reflected in the next register of Senator’s interests. Addressing housing disparity Australia’s democratic process is predicated on notions of impartiality and transparency. The parliamentary register of members’ interests is an important citizenry “watch dog” mechanism. It is a mechanism that should be employed to monitor the property holdings of Australian politicians and then deployed to call their actions to account. It is important to note that the research doesn’t show a causal link between property holdings and decisions of politicians. But it would be imprudent to assume prima facie that the property holdings of Australian politicians do not play a role in their political thinking, especially as this thinking relates to housing, taxation or even superannuation policy. What is needed is a broader discussion about housing disparity that fully acknowledges and accounts for these vested interests and tools of political influence. This should include the politics and interests of the politicians themselves. The naïve assumption that housing wealth will trickle down through a property-owning democracy have been shattered by the realities of 21st century Australian cities. The question which remains is whether our democratic processes can be reorganised to address these now clearly evident housing disparities. A discussion about the real estate ideologies that underwrite the investment agendas of Australian politicians seems like a fitting starting point. www.ganeshaspeaks.com Cancer - June 22 - July 22 Although things may seem to be somewhat depressing as the month begins, Ganesha assures you that as the days roll by things will take a positive turn on all fronts of life. As long as you remain down to earth and not expect the sky, you will experience success and happiness. You will make satisfactory progress in your career; if you are a businessman, you may expect an increase in turnover and profits; and personal relationships will be hunky dory. The increasing income, particularly, will put you in high spirits, and you will become too extravagant, showering your near and dear ones with objects of desire. However, Ganesha advises you to try and save some portion of it for the rainy day. As for children, though, there may be times when you may feel frustrated as you will observe that their studies are not progressing satisfactorily, so try to motivate them.
Libra - September 23 - October 22 Ganesha predicts that your work pressure is bound to increase this month, and hence you will have to be constantly on your feet. You will have to set your priorities right, and then schedule your work accordingly so that even if you have to do some multi-tasking, you will be able to complete your job within the deadlines set by the top management of your company. Also, expect a lot of travel for official purposes, but maybe you can throw in a weekend or so for leisure and relaxing with your family. You will be required to take some vital decisions, and you should exercise great care while doing so. Considering all the extra efforts you have been putting in for a long time, if you feel that you deserve a pay hike, you may go ahead and request your bosses as the stars are in your favour and so the time is right.
Leo - July 23 - August 22 Ganesha foretells that you will have a taste of fame this month, and people will love you for what you are. However, you will be unnecessarily conscious about your outer looks, and a visit to a beauty saloon or a spa is very much on the cards. Ganesha advises you not to become too vain, or else all the people who like you will become indifferent. At work, you will perform your tasks confidently, but there may be times when you may feel confused and at such times you should seek the help of your colleagues. If you are a businessman, know that the stars are in your favour if you wish to start a new project. In your personal life, Ganesha feels you need to make some changes, such as improving your lifestyle by giving up an addiction, which will have a salutary effect on your health.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21 As a rule, you are a hard worker and never shy away from any task that is given to you, but Ganesha predicts that this month the stars are not too favourable and even a little effort may tire you out. You are therefore advised to take small breaks from work whenever you can to recoup your energy, and also recommended is a little holiday so you can recuperate and rejuvenate. The excessive strain is likely to make you somewhat irritable, and this will affect not just your work, but also your relations with people in your close circle, so try to control the tendency, which Ganesha feels, can be done best through meditation. On the personal side, your relations with your parents may be rocky, and you may need to be more considerate towards them.
Virgo - August 23 - October 22 Despite having slogged hard at work, you may feel frustrated that your efforts are not being appreciated, However, Ganesha advises you not to let that bog you down. Peg on with your work sincerely, believe that work is worship, and don't think about the fruits of your labour; they will come in due course of time. This is a good month for businessmen too, so if you have been planning to start a new project, this month is just the right time to press the start button. But this will not hold true for starting a new partnership, so continue your solo journey until the time turns in favour of partnerships. On the monetary front, you will be comfortable as long as you don't indulge in wasteful expenditure. Make it a habit to save a small percentage of your earnings and invest it to secure your future.
Sagittarius - November 22 - December 22 Your professional life is going to dominate your personal life this month, foretells Ganesha. Your family may be quite cooperative to begin with, but after some time, your near and dear ones may start resenting the fact that you are unable to spend any quality time with them. Under the circumstances the best you can do is to convince them that you cannot compromise with work at this stage, and promise to take them out on a holiday first thing the moment it is practically possible. This is where your communication skills, which are likely to peak this month, will come in handy, helping you both on the personal and professional fronts. All this does not mean that your attitude will be dead serious – on the contrary you will display great sportsmanship and a great sense of humour. On the romantic front, it is unlikely that there will be any major development.
Capricorn - December 23 - January 30 Apart from some delicate situations to tackle on the professional front, especially with your superiors, Ganesha predicts that this month will be relatively problem-free. But be careful of not getting into tussles with your peers and superiors in the office or else it could harm your career severely. You need to be more resilient and consider other people's opinions instead of simply bulldozing through with your own views. Ganesha advises you to do some serious meditation, which will help you both on the home and office fronts. This month you may also develop some inclination for spiritual and philosophical subjects. On the personal front, you will be more outgoing than usual and attend parties and make new friends, but don't forget your old friends and keep in touch with them regularly. Relations with your life-partner will be smooth, and singles may find someone interesting. Aquarius - January 21 - February 19 In the initial stages of this month you may be in the grip of inertia, and may find it very difficult to accomplish much, foretells Ganesha. However, you will wish to stay on the positive side of things or peoples' opinions, and this will act as a motivating factor, so you will pull up your socks and try to be very efficient despite the fact that you may be feeling under the weather. As you will be of an amiable disposition, even to the extent that you may disregard your own preferences to please others, you will win many hearts. For businessmen this month is favourable to expand operations, and sign new contracts, However, Ganesha warns you not to sign the contracts blindly, but to read the fine print with a magnifying glass so you don't miss out on some tricky terms and conditions. In personal matters, don't be impulsive.
Pisces - February 20 - March 20 Ganesha foretells that you will be overloaded with work this month, but also warns you that if you don't maintain your fitness at peak levels, you may not be able to accomplish all the tasks alloted to you. Apart from making a priority list and logging in extra hours, you may also have to do some multi-tasking, which could throw your regular routine out of gear. All this overwork could have a negative bearing on your health, so make sure you get enough rest and exercise regularly to boost your stamina. Despite all the difficulties, you will not only manage to complete everything but also you will be able to do it without compromising on the quality of your output. If you are a businessman, be wary of rivals who may be trying to pull a fast one on you. For creative people this is a favourable month, as your work will fetch you Disclaimer: This is only a guide and is not directed towards any particular individual and the writer shall not be responsible for anything to do with the article content. both money and fame. 38 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, August, 2014 www.indiantimes.com.au Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

THE Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) says the latest housing finance figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reflect a stable market in which interest rates should remain on hold. The figures for June 2014 show, in trend terms, that the number of owner-occupied finance commitments increased by 0.2 per cent, following similar monthly increases over the first five months of 2014. If refinancing is excluded, in trend terms for June, the number of owner-occupied finance commitments fell by 0.1 per cent - the fifth consecutive drop this year. REIA President, Peter Bushby says, “Increases were recorded in Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania and the Northern Territory which had the biggest rise of 1.3 per
cent. Falls were recored in Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory with the biggest fall of 0.6 per cent.” “In trend terms, the number of commitments for the construction of new dwelling climbed 0.3 per cent in June, following over three years of consecutive monthly increases. “The proportion of first home buyers in the number of owner-occupied housing finance commitments increased to 13.2 per cent compared to 12.6 per cent in May.” “The June 2014 lending figures indicate a stable market and taking into consideration the jump in unemployment to a 12 year high, signal a period in which interest rates should remain at their current levels,” concluded Mr Bushby. REIA
in the city appears to be taking hold. Sandkuhler says this is a rational approach to a growing challenge. “It’s a smart strategy to get into the market and if buyers target the larger centres, they can achieve capital growth and secure an income-producing property.” “For people considering this strategy, I would tell them stick to the larger centres within a couple of hours travel time of the state capital and ensure the local economy is robust and diverse with a variety of employment opportunities.”

A CURIOUS thing is happening in the real estate world. It seems young Australians are opting to invest in regional property while continuing to rent or stay at home in the suburbs of our major capital cities. In one of the more intriguing findings of realestate.com.au’s 2014 Housing Affordability Sentiment Index (HASI), Gen Ys who don’t own their own home are twice as likely to own an investment property as their nearest age group, Gen X. The HASI survey found 13% of Gen Ys who don’t own their home have an investment property, compared with 7% of Gen Xs and just 2% of Baby Boomers. Young buyers heading out of the city And, of late, much of that buyer interest is heading out of the major cities and into the regional centres. To understand why this is happening, I spoke
to Miriam Sandkuhler, Director at Melbourne Buyers Agency, Property Mavens. I started by asking if she had noticed any uptick in Gen Ys buying in regional centres over the past 12 months. “In fact,” she says, “I bought a regional property for a 27-year-old just recently and I’ve noticed more and more Gen Ys looking to employ this property strategy.” What’s driving the trend? “I think there a couple of things at play here,” Sandkuhler says. “For one thing, I often meet young buyers who have the budget for a one-bedroom apartment in their current location but are thinking of starting a family and don’t have enough deposit to buy a large enough home.” “But, more fundamentally, markets like Melbourne and Sydney are likely going the way of London and New York, where buying property is out of reach for many people who will have to let go of their dream of home ownership. “Instead many are looking to use their sav-

Bollywood & Entertainment It’s Entertainment - Movie review Film: Entertainment Cast: Akshay Kumar, Tamannah, Mithun Chakraborty, Krushna Abhishek Director: Sajid-Farhad Rating: 3star THE canine-hero’s name in the list of actors in the credit titles comes first because that’s how Akshay Kumar wants it. This film tells you to love animals. It’s a simple straightforward premise structured around a comical plot about a gold-digger wastrel whose father leaves his billions to his dog. Canine apni mutthi mein! Playing the predatory retriever with an evil glint in his eye and wicked smirk on his face, Akshay Kumar has a ball in the film. He does a wickedly amiable mean act trying to poison, electrocute and drown the canine. Admittedly, the characters on screen seem to enjoy themselves more than the audience. Not that we don’t share their enjoyment. For a large part of the narration, “Entertainment” is fun to watch. The script is deftly and devilishly put together. If only writer-turned-co-director SajidFarhad did not trip over the cascade of word-play, the going would have been much more pleasing. Lamentably every character speaks in a tumble of puns and word play, some of them painfully plodding and self-conscious. My most cringe-worthy ode to filmy wordplay is, “Aapna Sonakshi seena taan ke chal”. Really, now. Where there are the saints there are also the Sinhas. The character played by the comically vibrant Krushna Abhishek crams in actors’ names in every sentence. This would have been infuriatingly obtrusive in a film of a more serious nature. No such calamity befalls “Entertainment”. The biggest USP of the reasonably entertaining “Entertainment” is that it never makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously. In the hilarious opening, where in a product-endorsement spoof with Riteish Deshmukh, Akshay establishes his character as a rogue and a charlatan, the film hops skips and jumps through hilarious hoopla, sometime generating a reluctant laughter in the audience, at other times leaving you a little numbed by the fatuous flavour of the farce. In one sequence, where the leading lady Tammannah’s father Mithun Chakraborty (singularly unfunny) advises his daughter to marry the dog since husbands become “dogs” after marriage anyway, one is not sure if the co-directors aim to be kinky or comical. Some scenes walk on thick ice, quite literally. The moral turning-point for Akshay’s character vis-a-vis the canine happens in a
scene spread out on a dangerously thin icebed. It defines what the film tries to achieve given its flimsy premise and nebulous moral ground. Holding the film from falling apart is Akshay Kumar. Sporting and sometimes sparkling with his comic timing, he helps the audience to over over the serious silliness of some of the material in the secondhalf where, in a style of cat-and-mouse game of “Home Alone” and “Dunston Checks In”, Akshay gets even with two bumbling comic villains played with anarchic gusto by Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood. Here is where the narration needed to exercise more temperance. Here is where “Entertainment” errs. It doles out too much of the farcical garnish that tends to tarnish the innocence of the relationship between Dog and Man. A blend of the mischievous and the mirthful “Entertainment” is a green-lit blueschaser which tends to get carried away with its fun of mood. The gags flow non-stop, accommodating a hefty amount of playingtime to letting the characters grow into precocious over-grown brats. In one sequence, when Akshay Kumar gets to know his father’s billions have gone to the dog, he rolls on the floor and wails like a baby. Dare any other A-lister actor do that. “Entertainment” takes on the tripe that our cinema enjoys dishing out and turns it into some kind of a queasy crap-convention that knows it is making little sense most of the time and is not apologetic about its lowbrow aspirations. And yes, most of Akshay Kumar’s chemistry is with his canine co-star, an imperturbable retriever who seems resigned to being thrown in the middle of a plot which he cannot make sense of. We second that emotion. Tamannah has precious-little to do, and she does it not so well. – BNW
After polio, Big B open to associate with anti-tobacco campaign MEGASTAR Amitabh Bachchan, who has been long associated with campaigns for polio eradication in India, won’t mind working on anti-tobacco projects too. The “Bhoothnath Returns” star has been actively campaigning for polio eradication since 2002 and was appointed a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador with a focus on HIV/AIDS and polio eradication in April 2005. At a function held on July 28 to celebrate India being certified polio-free, he revealed that he would like to extend a helping hand to those in other countries as well infected by polio virus and also support other cause. “If I get offer from other countries, I will do it. If any campaign is made, and they want me, for society and country, I’ll do it,” Amitabh said here. The non-smoker is also open to anti-tobacco campaigns. “If any campaign on tobacco is made, I am ready to work on it. I don’t smoke, so it will be close to my heart,” said the 71-year-old. He also shared why he is closely associated to medical cause. “I’ve been through medical episodes throughout my career. I respect Indian doctors,” said Amitabh, who was on many occasions critically ill and was treated in India. The father-in-law of actress Aishwarya Rai, who is married to Abhishek Bachchan, also said that his daughter-in-law makes sure Aaradhya, 2, gets her polio drops and other vaccines on time. Case against Aamir Khan over nude ‘PK’ poster A CASE was filed in a court in Kanpur Saturday (August 2) against Aamir Khan and the producer and director of new movie “PK” after its poster showed the Bollywood star in the nude except for a transistor covering his private parts. In the complaint, lawyer Manoj Dixit accused the actor, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Rajkumar Hirani of promoting nudity and vulgarity. The film is scheduled for release in December. The court listed the case for Aug 7 when the contention of the petitioner would be heard and, if needed, the producer, director and actor will be served notice to appear before it. The petitioner said Aamir Khan has considerable influence on the youth of today and any such act would only tempt youths
to emulate him, thereby threatening the social order. This in turn, he added, would lead to cases of sexual offences. Many newspapers had printed posters of the forthcoming movie in which Aamir Khan is reportedly playing an alien. – BNW
No kisses please, we're Indian: Censors to have same rules for Hollywood, Bollywood HOLLYWOOD films were allowed more kisses even for films certified for all ages, but now in a bid to stop allegations of discrepancies in the certification of Indian and international films, the censor board has decided to treat kissing scenes in Hollywood and Bollywood with the same yardstick. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has clamped down on a deepmouth French kiss in the Lasse Hallstrom's The Hundred-Foot Journey, which features Om Puri and Helen Mirrren as two warring restaurateurs who come together to cook up a romantic dish. No, don't get your hopes high. The torrid kiss that the CBFC objected to doesn't feature Puri and Mirren. It's Manish Dayal, (seen as Om Puri's onscreen son Hassan Kadam), and his French girlfriend played by Charlotte Le Bon, who share a torrid tongue-to-tongue that sent the CBFC into a
tizzy. “The CBFC gave Reliance Entertainment, the co-producers of 100 Foot Journey the choice of keeping the French kiss with a 'UA' certificate. But Reliance has opted to take a 'U' certificate without the French kiss, as it allows a much wider spectrum of audience to watch the film,” said a source. In a related move, the CBFC has decided to not follow different guidelines regarding kissing in our films. “The earlier logic that westerners are more comfortable with indulging in and watch smooching does not apply any more. When we allowed kissing to remain in Hollywood films, Indian producers would point accusing fingers at them asking why there couldn't be kissing in their scenes. So from now on if you want a serious kiss - and we are not talking about just a peck, which the CBFC allows anyway, then be prepared for a UA certification.” HT
Thanks for calling me 'King of Bollywood': SRK on Salman's comment MUMBAI, August 9, 2014: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is thankful for being conferred with the 'King of Bollywood' title by Salman Khan, and feels humbled to have gained respect from peers and fans alike after being in the industry all these years. When asked to comment, Shah Rukh said, "We all are kind to each other. We respect each other. I think what we have achieved (in our career) and I will include myself also in it.. I think... whatever we have earned (name) is due to our hard work. We have been entertaining for many years. We don't disrespect anyone. So all these titles and numbers doesn't really matter. I think we all just hope our next film does well. So if you ask me a question like this I am thankful to anyone who thinks of me like this anywhere in the world. God has been kind to me," he said without taking Salman's name. He also chose to dodge another question on Salman's Kick. Talking about his upcoming film Happy New Year, SRK said it has all the ingredients of a Bollywood entertainer. The trailer of Happy New Year will be unveiled on August 14 and is expected to be a star-studded event.

"Everybody is invited... please come. The trailer is really good... I hope you all like it. We are trying to create an evening... the film is about dance, music, glamour. I am not nervous. I do my best and leave the rest," Shah Rukh said at an event last night here. "When I go abroad, people tell me Bollywood is about dance and music. We wanted to make an ultimate Bollywood film. I tried to produce a film that has everything in it--romance, drama, action, revenge, sensuality, happiness... it has everything about Bollywood. It is an entertainer," he said. Ketan Mehta’s Rang Rasiya fought censors for five years
In my family, we are all ready to uproot handpumps: Rohit Shetty ROHIT Shetty has four sisters, but the filmmaker is closest to Mehek, who he is 10 years older to. When you meet them, you immediately notice the child-like banter between the two. During our shoot with them, Mehek’s hair was constantly flying. So when Rohit pointed to his own head to show that he doesn’t share the same worry, she simply said that he was jealous of her locks, and both burst out laughing, as if on cue. At one point, Rohit even asked the photographer to go on taking pictures, saying that everyone was only going to be looking at him. This Raksha Bandhan, we catch up with the siblings to learn about their childhood, and their memories of the auspicious day. Favourite Rakhi gift Rohit: I don’t exactly remember what gift I gave her. Mehek: He has given me so many things; the biggest one is when he approved of the guy I wanted to get married to (Navin Shetty). Rohit: I don’t look broad-minded, but I am. It was not like I didn’t know the guy. I have worked with him for many years. I have started getting clothes for free now, so it was a very good deal for me (laughs). Who’s the naughtiest? Rohit: Mehek is the bigger nautanki (drama queen). Mehek: Yes, I am. Rohit: Mehek is a big show-off. She doesn’t leave any opportunity to brag about being my sister. In fact, when this article is printed, she will make sure to circulate it around to every household in the country. Once, we were shooting at Ramoji Film City (Hyderabad), when it suddenly started pouring. The entire team was standing under some shade, when we suddenly saw a lady walking under a huge garden umbrella. She wasn’t even carrying it herself; the poor spot boy was following her around the entire studio. Mehek: Arre, but the spot boy brought the umbrella na. Growing up Mehek: We had a simple, middle-class upbringing. I’ve got the best of things because of him, and I haven’t struggled as much as him. He faced hardships, but he made it easier for me and the rest of the family. Rohit: Any man would like to his family to get the best of things, and provide whatever he can to them. God has been kind, and I’m very thankful to him. Mom’s favourite Rohit: It’s quite obvious that I was mom’s favourite . Mehek: I had no issues with that. POSSESSIVE STREAK Rohit: I’m very possessive about everyone in the family. But if you want to know how possessive Mehek is about me, try criticising me. Mehek: I’m very possessive about him, and I don’t like anyone talking bad about him. I feel like thrashing them. I can do anything for him. He is like my father and my angel. Whatever I am is because of him. Rohit: In our family, we are all like Sunny Deol in Gadar (2001) — ready to uproot a hand pump. Action is in our blood, and we can’t help it. STARRING Randeep Hooda, who plays the legendary Malayalam artist, Raja Ravi Varma, and Nandana Sen (daughter of Nobel Laureate Amritya Sen), essaying his muse, the film could not get past the censors reportedly because of nudity and other bold scenes. Mehta had said that Rang Rasiya was fiction, though he admitted the film inspired by some of the actual incidents in Varma’s life. Raja Ravi Varma was renowned for his iconic paintings of Hindu deities and scenes from mythology. He was better known for painting portraits of
sensuous women. Mehta, celebrated for works like Bhavni Bhavai, Holi, Mirch Masala and Maya Memsahib, had screened Rang Rasiya in London for a select audience. It is yet not known whether Mehta had to be cut scenes from Rang Rasiya to suit the moral standards set by the Central Board of Film Certification. In the prevailing scenario where the Board is clamping down on sex and kissing (example The Hundred-Foot Journey with Om Puri), it is probable that Mehta had to compromise to get his work out on the screens. Indian women's recurve team wins gold in Archery World Cup DEEPIKA Kumari-led women archers clinched the recurve team gold after routing Mexico 6-0 in the final as India returned with five medals in the Archery World Cup Stage IV in Wroclaw, Poland on Sunday 10 August. Deepika herself won three medals on Sunday as she also bagged a bronze each in recurve women's individual event and recurve mixed team pair event with her partner Jayanta Talukdar. The men's recurve team settled for a silver after losing to Mexico 3-5 in the final. The Indian compound mixed pair of Abhishek Verma and Puvasha Shende had clinched a silver medal on Saturday 9 August. In the women's recurve team event, the second seeded India women's trio of Deepika, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi routed Mexico 6-0 without surrendering a single set point. Deepika herself shot three of the Indian team's five 10s. "The match was not too difficult. Hopefully we can do the same at the Asian Games," said Deepika. "This event has already raised our confidence. We have had a difficult season, but the hard work we have put in ahead of Incheon is starting to pay off." The Indian trio had earlier trounced their opponents from Georgia 6-2 in the semifinals. In the men's recurve team final, however, the Indian trio of Tarundeep Rai, Jayanta Talukdar and Atanu Das lost to Mexico 3-5. Mexico took a 2-0 lead and never looked back. India trailed 2-4 in the fourth set with Mexico's anchor archer Juan Rene Serrano
only needing a red to seal the match. The only right-handed archer in Mexico's team, Juan Rene shot last in the trio's rotation and he did not make any mistake. It was the second World Cup stage team gold for Mexico. The other was won at Medellin last year. In the women's recurve individual event, Deepika beat Tatiana Segina of Russia 6-2 in the bronze-medal match. Deepika then partnered Talukdar in the recurve mixed team pair event and thrashed their Belarus opponents 6-0 in the bronze medal match. PTI
Pepe Reina joins Bayern Munich BAYERN Munich have signed Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina on a three-year contract, the German football giants confirmed in a statement. Reina, who spent his last season on a loan spell at Napoli, penned a contract until June 2017 after passing the medical on Friday. The new arrival received the jersey number 23, which he also wears with the Spanish national team, reports Xinhua. "I am delighted to join one of the biggest clubs of the world," Reina told Bayern's official homepage. Reina will be the second man
behind German World champion Manuel Neuer, who remains the undisputed No 1. "Pep wanted a goalkeeper who plays like Manuel Neuer. You can't take it for granted to find a man with his experience and quality, who is ready to take the place as the number two," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. Bayern Munich clinched the domestic double last season but failed to defend their UEFA Champions League title as they lost to Real Madrid at the semis. The Bavarians kick off the Bundesliga season 2014-2015 on August 22 against Wolfsburg.
Dhoni chides top-order batsmen for poor show MANCHESTER, August 10, 2014: Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni blasted his toporder batsmen for their spineless show after India slumped to a humiliating innings and 54-run defeat against England in the fourth Test in Manchester. The loss was set up on the opening day itself, when electing to bat under overcast conditions, India were reduced to eight for four and were eventually bowled out for 152. The Indian batsmen didn't fare any better in the second innings as they were bowled out for 161 runs, this time in better batting conditions. "It is important to put runs on the board. The number 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 batsmen have masked the top-order so far in this series," Dhoni said at the post-match press conference as the match ended inside three days. "The win at Lord's also helped camouflage the poor form of the top-order and we couldn't question them that they are not scoring any runs. Our fifth bowler has scored more runs than our top-order batsmen," a livid Dhoni said. While man-of-the-match Stuart Broad (6/25) was the tormentor in the first innings, it was England off-spinner Moeen Ali (4/39), who broke India's back in the second innings. Dhoni was all praise for the English bowling. "On this wicket, England bowled very well. The first hour of the match was very crucial. The batting department has to improve and the top five to six batsmen have to get more runs. This defeat will hurt
Sushil, Yogeshwar pick Asian Games over World Championships
us," he said. Getting behind a lead of 215 runs with more than two days to bat out, the Indian batting fell like a pack of cards in the final session of the third day's play. "We don't know what was going to happen tomorrow or day after. The important thing was to play out the day today," said Dhoni commenting on the weather forecast. The skipper said it was time that Indian batsmen start batting responsibly and convert the good starts into big ones. "Most of the batsmen have played cricket for a long time and have enough experience to know the match conditions. So they can see that they have to play out sessions accordingly. Sixty overs is a very big target, you can only plan ahead for 3-4 overs at the maximum. That is your target and that's the spell bowlers go through as well. "Most of the batsmen have gone through good spells, they have got starts and they are able to see off the most difficult phase. But they haven't been able to convert those starts. They need to start converting those starts," he said. PTI

STAR grapplers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt have decided to skip the FILA World Wrestling Championships to be held next month in Tashkent, Uzbekistan to avoid injuries and preserve themselves for the upcoming Asian Games. Sushil and Yogeshwar, who won a gold each in men's 74kg and 65kg freestyle in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, will not take part in the world meet to be held from September 4 to 18. Amit Kumar Dahiya and Babita Kumari, who won a gold each in Glasgow in men's 57kg and women's 55kg freestyle, will also not take part in the World Championships. Wrestling head coach Vinod Kumar told PTI that India will send a 'B' team in the World Championships in view of the Asian Games. "It will be really hectic for Sushil and
Yogeshwar to take part in both the World Championships and Asian Games as barely 10 days separate the two events. They have to be kept fighting fit for the Asian Games and avoid injuries. Amit Kumar Dahiya is also not taking part (in World Championships). So basically we are sending a 'B' team in the World Championships," Vinod Kumar said. "World Championships is an important event in the wrestling calendar but we feel Asian Games are even more important as they are the premier multi-sporting event of the continent and the performance of our wrestlers will reflect on India's medal tally. We have to choose between two important events and we opted for Asian Games to field our top wrestlers," he reasoned. HT
Jakarta set to be named 2018 Asian Games hosts - reports JAKARTA is set to be named as the new host city for the 2018 Asian Games after Vietnam withdrew earlier this year from hosting the multi-sports event, according to local media reports. Olympic Council of Asia Vice President Wei Jizhong met Indonesian government officials in Jakarta this week and said he had been impressed with the state of facilities and infrastructure in the city. "After two inspections by me on behalf of the OCA, we consider Jakarta is almost ready to host the 2018 Asian Games," Wei told the Jakarta Post this week. "Jakarta infrastructure already met all requirements of the OCA. So the OCA is confident that Indonesia and Jakarta can deliver a wonderful and clean Asian Games in 2018." The Jakarta Globe newspaper said the South

Sumatra city of Palembang would co-host the event with the capital, though Wei told the newspaper that Jakarta would be the official host then it would need to name Palembang as co-host. Indonesia's Surabaya had bid for the 2018 event but lost to the Vietnamese capital Hanoi in November 2012. Vietnam's government decided against hosting the event in April this year citing the costs of building facilities and infrastructure. Singapore immediately dismissed any notion of bidding for the Games, instead preferring to concentrate on the Southeast Asian Games they host in 2015, while India also expressed interest but did not proceed with a bid. The OCA will name the new hosts on Sept. 20 at their general assembly during this year's Asian Games in South Korea. Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533
Sports News Arsenal outclass Man City in Community Shield LONDON: Arsenal prepared for the Premier League season by collecting the Community Shield with a 3-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday 10 August, picking up where the team left off at the FA Cup final by adding another piece of silverware at Wembley. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramey, who both scored in the FA Cup triumph that ended Arsenal's nine-year trophy drought in May, also netted against City with well-taken first-half strikes. A makeshift City was a shadow of the team that won the Premier League for the second time in three years in May. And Olivier Giroud added to City's discomfort by scoring with a dipping strike on the hour in the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season between the Premier League and FA Cup champions. "We have a great team ethic, we are all together and hopefully we can take that into the season," Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said. Arsenal opens its Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace on Saturday 16 August, looking to win the title for the first time in 11 years. Winning the Shield might set the tone for
the opening weeks of the season, but is likely to be forgotten by quickly. For David Moyes, it counted for nothing that his brief and unsuccessful Manchester United reign began by lifting the trophy here a year ago. Given how City's makeshift team performed in the first half, with just four of the players who started the title-clinching Premier League finale in May, this game clearly ranked low on the priority list. Perhaps most surprisingly, England goalkeeper Joe Hart was on the bench as new
signing Willy Caballero was preferred in goal. But Hart, who was dropped during last season and fought to regain his City place, saw the recruit from Malaga concede three times. At the first match at Wembley since England's pre-World Cup friendly against Peru in May, the shortage of Englishmen at top clubs was exposed again. With Hart dropped, City's starting lineup lacked a single Englishman while Arsenal had a core of three, including new signing Calum
Chambers who was assured in defense. Arsenal's trio of German World Cup winners - Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski - are still on their postBrazil break. But the cup winners, with $60 million-forward Alexis Sanchez making his full debut, were in control throughout against a City side that provided little threat. Just like in the FA Cup final win against Hull, Cazorla scored Arsenal's first goal. Jack Wilshere and Yaya Sanogo combined before the ball broke for Cazorla to strike low into the net in the 2st minute. Sanogo dragged a shot wide and had a header collected by Caballero before helping ensure that Arsenal's cushion was doubled before half time. Completing a swift break, the French forward held off Dedryck Boyata before passing for Ramsey to neatly stab the ball in the 42nd. Although City appeared more effective at the start of the second half, with Stevan Jovetic denied by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, the deficit was extended on the hour when Giroud was given the space to send a dipping strike past Caballero.
Rousing welcome for silver-winning Indian hockey team NEW DELHI: With a Commonwealth Games silver proudly hanging by their necks, the Indian men's hockey team returned home to a rousing welcome by
Hockey India (HI), Indian Olympic Association (IOA), fans and friends at the Indira Gandhi International airport on Tuesday 5 August.
The team showed tremendous grit by beating New Zealand 3-2 in the semifinals after trailing by two goals. The Sardar Singh-led side then ran into Australia again in Glasgow, a repeat of the 2010 edition in Delhi, and lost 0-4 to the world champions but the Terry Walsh-coached side were lauded for their efforts. Congratulating and welcoming the team, Hockey India secretary general Narinder
Batra said, "I am proud of the team and congratulate them on their well deserved Silver medals. All the hard work and efforts they have put in prior the tournament helped them perform their best, bringing laurels to the country." "The entire nation is proud of the team and I wish them all the very best for the impending Asian Games and all other future endeavours," he added.
Disgruntled Nasri says France career is over LONDON: Manchester City's French midfielder Samir Nasri has decided to quit international football over a breakdown in his relationship with national coach Didier Deschamps and the French media. The 27-year-old playmaker won the Premier League last season with City but was left out of the France squad for this year's World Cup in Brazil, where the side reached the quarterfinals. Deschamps later filed a legal complaint for 'public insult' against Nasri's girlfriend, Anara Atanes, for messages she posted on Twitter after the player was omitted from the France squad. "Let's face it, as long as he (Deschamps) is going to be the manager I don't think I have a shot after everything that has happened," Nasri told reporters before Sunday's (10 Aug) Community Shield against his former club Arsenal. "I will only be 29 in 2016 for the European Championships (hosted by France) but the French national team doesn't make me happy. Every time I go there, there is just more trouble. "I face accusations about me and my family suffers from it and I don't want to make them suffer, so it's better to stop it and focus on my club career." Nasri, who has been capped 41 times, has a reputation as a troublemaker and was banned for three matches after launching a foul-mouthed tirade at a reporter following France's quarterfinal defeat by Spain at Euro 2012. The player also missed the 2010 World Cup when former coach Raymond Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533
Domenech left him out of the squad. Nasri said Deschamps was not the only factor that drove him towards taking a decision to quit playing for France. "He did what he thought was best for his team. I understand his choice, it is not something about him, I don't have any problem with him. It's just everything," Nasri added. "It is not him who talks in the press, it is the press who say things about me and the players as well. "Before this World Cup, they were saying that some players complain (about him). Why do you want me to be in the group with some players who can't even be true in front of me and tell me that they have a problem? "I don't want to be there. I am not happy. I don't want to go there any more." TOI www.indiantimes.com.au
