From the Publisher UNBELIEVABLE but true it is already 2015, so a big welcome to all of you to 2015, I have a feeling that this is going to a very good year, after a disastrous 2014. We have had a multitude or world disasters not to mention our home grown terror siege in Martin Place Sydney. Air traffic disasters topped the list in 2014, never before in history had we witnessed the complete disappearance of an aircraft. Tragic as it is, aircrafts being blown out of the sky or nose diving into the sea is something we have seen or heard off before, but a plane completely disappearing from the face of this earth, unheard off. Really it is a blow to the technical advances of the modern age, today nothing is private anymore every little thing is traceable and even then a plane manages to vanish off the face of this earth. As we all are humans and we will err, accidents will happen, but one would have thought that in today’s day and age we would have had better tracking systems.

How about the siege in Martin Place, too close to comfort one would say, but then Australia is not immune to terrorism, question arises how well are we prepared at all? How could such an incident be allowed to take place in the first place? Is our enforceable law in this matter adequate? Is it a system failure, what are we as a community doing. On a lighter note in 2014 we saw the inauguration of Mahatma Gandhi statue in Roma Street Parklands by Indian Prime Minister Shree Narendra Modi Ji, this has been a tremendous achievement for Queensland Indian Community, an example of the fruits of a united effort, we now have a Gandhi statue for all Queenslanders forever. It is understandable that in the process some people may have felt left out, the committee that was quickly set, was a once off committee specifically for that project. As usual few people worked very hard to

Khetri was extremely cold, but Ahemdabad was pleasant, probably the best time to be visiting this wonderful city. Ahmadabad has been very busy with the PBD, Vibrant Gujarat and GOPIO conferences, many people would be leaving on the 13th but Ahemdabad will remain bustling till the 15th, as the 14th and 15th is the kite festival, Ahemdabad virtually closes for these two days, the festival Makarshkranti (Uttrayanan) is celebrated in a very big way here, probably bigger than Diwali. All the kite shops are working around the clock to supply the demand. January, along with Australia day marks the anniversary of Hindu Society of Queensland and Republic day of India all on the same day, so 26th January is a significant day for Queensland Indian Community. Hindu Society of Queensland will be holding their anniversary celebrations during the day, Honorary Counsel for India in Queensland, Mrs Archana Singh will hold the flag raising ceremony at the consulate office and FICQ will be holding the Indian Republic day celebrations. There will be many Australia Day functions around Brisbane which will include citizenship ceremonies and community BBQs. Once again wishing everyone all the best for 2015, it has started off with a blast which I feel will continue throughout the year, hope you all will be able to keep up to your new years resolutions. Hope to see you all at the many upcoming functions, keep on the lookout for some exciting news to be announced soon. Until next Month Happy reading Umesh Chandra

make it happen but with the support of others, some of whom were not even on the committee. Our community has grown significantly, this has been reflected in the ever growing attendees at India Day Fair and Diwali functions. Cultural Diversity Queensland has recognised this growth and has accordingly sanctioned a record grant amount via Valuing Cultural diversity grants to the Indian festivals and events. This has been welcomed by the Queensland Indian community who is very grateful for the grant allocation. Premier Campbell Newman has announced the state elections for end of January, with the government in an caretaker mode many ministers are unable to attend new community functions. The campaigning is in full swing, I am personally glad that it is a short campaign and not a long drawn out one . Often with the announcement of elections business confidence diminishes. This year I have once again attended the annual PBD in India, this time in Ahmadabad, this years PBD, (Pravasi Bahratiya Divas) was piggy backed on to Vibrant Gujarat, as a result there was a overlap of attendees for both the programs. For me it was quite a long trip as I added on our annual function in our ancestral Town, Khetri Rajasthan. While in Ahemdabad I also attended two GOPIO conferences, one GOPIO Gala dinner, so all in all a very busy trip . I will be reporting in detail on all the functions in the next edition, I am quickly jotting this down in between functions in Ahmadabad , where the weather has been very nice to my pleasant surprise.

Modi Inaugurates 2015 'Pravasi Bharatiya Divas'

Continued from page 1

PRIME Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 13th edition of 'Pravasi Bharatiya Divas' at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Over 4,000 delegates attended the event that started on 7 January and ended on 9 January. Modi also visited the 'Dandi Kutir' exhibition in Mahatma Temple premises, Gandhinagar. "'Dandi Kutir' with 3D mapping technology will be one of its rare kind of permanent exhibitions reminiscing Bapu's life – his works & ethics!," Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel tweeted. Modi had earlier inaugurated the Salt Mountain, a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi built near the Mahatma Mandir complex. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrat-

ed on 9 January every year since 2003 "to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India," says a PBD website release. January 9 is chosen for the celebration as "it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, led India's freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever," said the website. ? PBD is the world's largest annual gathering of Indian origin people "to connect India to its vast overseas diaspora and bring their knowledge, expertise and skills... These conventions provide a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and people of the land of their ancestors for mutually beneficial activities," it added. Full PBD report will be in February 15 issue.

Park free in Brisbane for 15 minutes, or Tap N Go to stay longer

BRISBANE businesses, shoppers and residents are set to reap the benefits of new parking initiatives with the introduction of Tap N Go technology at all electronic parking meters and free 15 minute parking at more than 7,700 inner city metered spaces as of 1 January, 2015. Acting Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the free parking initiative also extended to Council’s car parks at King George Square and Wickham Terrace, offering more than 1,100 parking bays. “In response to recommendations handed down by the Parking Taskforce last month, Council committed to rolling out free 15 minute parking by 1 January to make inner city parking more convenient for customers and boost turnover for local businesses,” Cr Schrinner said. “From January 1, motorists can enjoy free 15 minute parking at 7,715 metered parking spaces outside the CBD including at Auchenflower, Milton, Petrie Terrace, Kelvin Grove, Spring Hill, West End, South Brisbane, Woolloongabba, Fortitude Valley, Teneriffe and Newstead. “Inside the CBD, 500 parking bays in King George Square and 640 bays in Wickham Terrace will offer free 15 parking,” he said. In addition to free 15 minute parking for cars, Council is also boosting the number of free motorcycle parks in the inner city, with metered parking spaces outside the CBD available free of charge to motorcyclists from Thursday. “These spaces are located in high-demand areas of the inner city and will be available to motorcyclists with no time restrictions or charges from today,” he said. Cr Schrinner said on-street parking bays eligible for the free 15 minute parking were clearly signed at meters and each vehicle is entitled to one free 15 minute parking session per metered zone per day,

which will be extremely convenient for motorists who just need a short-stay park for a quick trip to the local shops, bank, chemist or post office.” To benefit from free metered parking, motorists enter their vehicle registration number into the meter as normal and, when prompted, choose the ‘Free under 15 minutes’ option. At King George Square and Wickham Terrace car parks, customers enter the car park, take a ticket at the boom gate as per usual and exit within 15 minutes using their ticket. “Council has reserved two express 15 minute parking bays in each car park, however, customers can use any of the unreserved spaces.” Cr Schrinner said it was important to remember the 15 minute free parking offer was not a ‘first 15 minutes free’ offer. “Motorists who need to park for longer than 15 minutes should enter their registration details into the meter, select the length of time they wish to park for within the time limit allowed and pay for the total length of their stay as they normally would,” he said. Cr Schrinner said motorists who are paying for metered parking – including those parking for longer than 15 minutes or in the CBD – can now enjoy faster, convenient and more secure payment options with the introduction of Tap N Go technology as part of a $1.6 million upgrade of electronic parking meters. For more information about 15 minute free parking or Tap N Go, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or call Council on (07) 3403 8888.

Subakumar Director, Media and Publicity AS a busy 2014 went by the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association (GCHCA) is focusing on the programs for 2015. The association thanks its supporters and volunteers for their contribution in 2014 and wishes all a Happy and prosperous New Year and a happy Thai Pongal. The Association is glad to inform its supporters and the Hindu community of the South East Queensland that the Hindu cultural precinct site development application lodged with the Gold Coast city council is in its final stages. The Association believes that the number of Hindu’s turning up to Temples and similar facilities on New year day is a clear indication for establishing more facilities for similar purposes in different regions in south east Queensland. The Hindu cultural precinct facility due to be built in the free land given to the association by the GCCC is to serve as a centre to raise the awareness of Hindu way of living, peaceful and harmonial co-existence with different cultures,

January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. The main Republic Day celebration is held in the national capital, New Delhi, at the Rajpath before the President of India. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Rajpath, which are performed as a tribute to India. To mark the importance of the occasion and to celebrate the bonding between India and

Blessings for the new year 2015 Dharam Guru Param Pujya Pt Tripathi Ji Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir North Maclean, Brisbane Courtesy Devika Maharaj CAN you imagine for 2014? How many tragedies occurred on the earth including incurable disease like Ebola, plane crashes and gunfire on the children and mob etc.? Running Grahas indicate that this type of misactivities may be up to June 2016 all around the earth either in Political field, economical field or social field. It is the rule of nature to keep a balance of the living and non-living beings on this earth. It is also stated that God is involved in His eternal blessing and spiritual activities but He has nothing to do with these material activities. We should pray for the year 2015 to be better and happier all around the world. Regarding these prayers we should be the student of spirituality who do not just read spiritual texts but also study them to reach

a deeper understanding of life and the universe and put these teachings into practice. The first thing we should cultivate is the pure heart. The pure heart is a mind without discrimination or attachments because root of people’s sufferings and sickness is discrimination and attachment to unrealistic things. So we should be very careful and treat all people with respect and avoid harming others. “What goes around comes around” Treat others the way we would like to be treated. If we want world peace for future generations and ourselves, we should refrain from erroneous acts and cultivate kindness. Please take resolution for the year 2015 Be kind, merciful and helpful to others. Think better, do better and always remain better. Oh God make this earth as a Heaven. Make everyone happy and prosperous. Give everyone peace and satisfaction. “SARVEY BHAWANTU SUKHINAM”

24th Year for Hindi School

Miss Asia Pacific Suptertalent 2014 winner Swetha Raj

• Students of Hindustani Language and Culture School at a recent annual certification night.

By Sarat Maharaj HINDUSTANI Language & Culture School will be entering its 24th consecutive year of operation this year in Brisbane. Whilst management of the school feels proud of this record in providing free service to the Indian Community, parents have an obligation to bring their children to the school, and thus maintaining the identity of their children when they grow up. Many new families have come into Australia in the recent months with Indian and cross cultural backgrounds. So, take advantage of this opportunity offered to you. Why maintaining your own mother tongue is so important? With Hindi

Language is tied our Indian Culture and our Indian Values. Further, these days, all levels of government and the corporate sector are always in the hunt for bi-lingual or even multi-lingual people to be on their staff to serve the diverse customer base. As Australia is becoming more and more multi-ethnic, the need for a language other than English is so essential. Our school curriculum is based on format accepted by Education Queensland. “Apart from Hindi Language and Indian Culture, our school teaches students leadership, Public Speaking, Interview Skills, Dance, Music, & Stage Presentation” said one spokesperson for the school.

Language lessons for school-age students are FREE, so far. Special arrangements have been made for mature age students. For your convenience, our school has two strategically located centres, at Calamvale Community College, 11 Hamish St, Calamvale on the Southside and at Boondall State School, Cnr Roscommon Rd & Sandgate Rd, Boondall on the Northside. Lessons are held on every Saturday from 2 – 4pm, except for school holidays. For enrolments in 2015, you can contact Sarat Maharaj on 0407 111 709 or by e-mail: regmaharaj@gmail.com, before 24 January 2015.

A bridge to inspiration IT was a case of double delight for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visited Brisbane as part of the recent G20. Not only did he get to dedicate a statue to Mahatma Gandhi in the Roma Street Parkland, he also got to announce to the Indian media that a major bridge in Greater Springfield will be also named after India’s famed freedom fighter. On Friday, January 30, Ipswich City Council will hold a special multicultural ceremony to formally name, ‘The Gandhi Inspirational Bridge’. It’s a tribute, the city says, to all who seek to inspire others to succeed and change the world and their community for the better. The date of the dedication will mark the 67th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s passing after a life of peaceful but determined protest that heralded India’s independence from colonial rule. Greater Springfield city founder and community builder Maha Sinnathamby, says the 110 meter bridge which connects the fast growing Springfield Central CBD to the very popular Robelle Domain will be a

focus point for the community. “This is a beautiful leafy and tranquil place where we can all reflect on the inspiration of Gandhi as well as those from our own community who also inspire us to greatness.” According to Mr Sinnathamby, the bridge, which itself symbolises being able to overcome difficulties, will also host dedications to other community heroes from time-to-time, as an ever increasing monument to their successes in the community. “We will be able to honour many people here and it will become an important gathering point for this fast growing city.” he said. The ceremony and celebration will include members from across the wider community, including residents from the Springfield and prestigious Brookwater suburbs. Senior

political and diplomatic representatives have also been invited along with members of the media. “We want people living here to be truly inspired by their surroundings. Whether they live in Springfield or in Brookwater, they are in Australia’s fastest emerging new city which itself has inspired national and international interest. “Having a unique monument to enduring

community spirit fits that purpose and what better way to start it off than to have a bridge dedicated to the wondrous bravery and character of Mahatma Gandhi.” says Maha. Robelle Domain forms part of Greater Springfield’s guaranteed 30 per cent green space and routinely draws thousands of visitors annually.

Public transport passengers win with fare freeze PASSENGERS will be spared an annual public transport fare increase following the Newman LNP Government’s decision to freeze fares across Queensland in 2015. Transport Minister Scott Emerson said the decision to scrap the 2.5 per cent increase due this month, coupled with last year’s historic fares cut, would save passengers hundreds of dollars a year. “This year’s fare freeze, on top of last year’s five per cent fare reduction, is part of our strong plan to improve the frequency, reliability and affordability of the public transport

14 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, January, 2015

network,” Mr Emerson said. “As a result of the Newman LNP Government’s decision to re-invest carbon tax savings back into public transport, families have more money to spend on the things that matter. “The combined effect of the fare decrease and fare freeze means a regular weekday passenger travelling to work from the Gold Coast to Brisbane will be $443 per year better off. “In regional Queensland, a regular weekday passenger in Townsville, for example, travelling four zones from Stockland Shopping Centre to Townsville City will save up

www.indiantimes.com.au

to $176 a year.” Mr Emerson said the LNP was delivering on its promise to keep public transport fares as low as possible. “We know there is still more to do, but only the LNP has a strong plan to ensure public transport is a viable option for Queenslanders - while Labor has no plan and no policies,” Mr Emerson said. “While we introduced the first state-wide public transport fare cut in Queensland’s history, the former Transport Minister’s legacy was 15 per cent fare increases every year.

Qld EIDFEST wins major award

• From Left: Vice Chancellor David Llloyd, Yasmin Khan, Rubana Moola, Brad Chilcott and Governor Hieu Van Le.

QUEENSLAND Eidfest Association has won the organisation award for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding given by the University of South Australia, the SA Premiers Office and the SA Australia Day Council. Eidfest has been held for the last 10 years to celebrate the end of Ramadhan, and has won a number of awards before, including the Lord Mayor’s Australia Day award, and the Brisbane Indian Times award for 6 years in a row. On accepting the award on behalf of the Eidfest Committee, President Yasmin Khan said “Eidfest was initiated to bring all of the Brisbane community together to celebrate a festive occasion, and now we

have been recognized for the great work we have done over the years. It has been an honour to receive the recognition, but that’s not why we do it. We do it to bring people together, to break down some barriers, to let the kids have fun, to actively put the Brisbane Muslim community out there, rather than constantly being reactive and to showcase our wonderful diversity and talents within our community.” A very big thanks to all those who continue to support Eidfest and the constants on my committee who without any of this would be possible – Sultan Deen, Rubana Moola and Suraya Khan. Brad Chilcott from Welcome to Australia won the individual award.

Australian Sikh Association Community Health Care Program a huge success Courtesy MP Singh MORE than 16 years ago, Sikh Youth Australia started running camps for young Sikhs in Australia. Among those who attended these camps were several young Sikh professionals who on Sunday, 23 November, 2014, were prominent in conducting a health clinic at the Australian Sikh Association premises in Glenwood. The Culture Care Pop Up clinic was a special community project between the Australian Sikh Association and Sikh Youth Australia. The event saw just fewer than 200 members of the Sikh community at Glenwood examined by doctors and other health professionals. Over 20 volunteers also turned up on the day to help with the program. Among the 6 doctors and 2 specialists in attendance was a doctor from Queensland, Dr Komal kaur Siani. She had flown down from Brisbane just to help with the program. Dr Komal said that for her, being “part of the Culture Care Clinic has been a very rewarding experience. It is also a great way for us to help promote health awareness in the community. I hope this project can find its way to Queensland as well.’’ Of those seen by the doctors at the clinic were two persons who were deemed to be high risk cases. They were immediately sent to a Sikh doctor in the Glenwood area, Dr Kheray, who was kind enough to treat them without any fee. One of the volunteers who accompanied the two elderly patients also insisted on helping by paying for the medications needed by one of the two patients.

“This Culture Care Pop up Clinic is the third that Sikh Youth Australia has organized this year. It is also the most successful,’’ said Dr Daman Bhatia.

We hope to continue this program next year in Sydney and also introduce it to Brisbane and Melbourne,” he said. The sewa or service provided by the youngsters

Determination and focus to achieve your dreams.... Prajna Vidyasagar graduated year 12 at St Johns Anglican  College in 2014 and achieved an OP 2 mark. Below is her year 12 reflection. SINCE a young age, dance, music and community service were my main priorities with academics lagging behind. With my constant desire to help those in need, I decided to pursue a career in health. However seeing the competition required to get into a Health course, I realized that I needed to prioritize academics over my other interests. Noticing the amount of effort that had to be put in to achieve the best possible result, I had to come out of my fantasy world that revolved around music and dance. I was lucky that I had realized this at the start of year 12 since this is a year that one has to work hard with perseverance, dedication and focus to achieve their dreams. Believe me when I say, Year 12 comes with many ups and downs, however it is a matter of remaining focused and constantly reminding yourself about your goals. I worked as hard as I could, shed away any obstacles and I am really proud of the OP 2 mark I have achieved. While studies played a major role in in year 12, I made sure I didn’t neglect my extra curricular activities that my school offered such as debating, sports as well as continuing to do service for the school. I was also the housevice captain and with this leadership came a lot of responsibilities. These were activities that I loved to do and I am so glad that I didn’t stop myself in year 12. It actually helped me concentrate better and avoided me from burning out. I also completed 2 university courses while I was in school and received high distinctions. I plan to pursue a health course because I want to dedicate my life to serving others since the satisfaction I get from this will give me eternal happiness. Being convinced that hard work coupled with motivation and self-confidence will allow

18 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, January, 2015

anyone to achieve their goals, I would advice all students to set small milestones, organize their time well, and choose subjects that interest them and to allocate some time for relaxation. Never think that you ‘cannot do it’. Before I started year 12, I never believed that I could do well in my academics because I had other priorities, however because of the faith I had in myself and the motivation to get into a health course so I can help others and make them happy, made me give every assignment and exam my best shot. I would like to thank my family and teachers who supported me through this strenuous year. People can snatch away your possessions and other assets but no one can snatch away your knowledge’. Prajna Vidyasagar www.indiantimes.com.au

was lauded by a senior ASA Management member Mr Mohan Singh Pooni, who said: “It is very uplifting to see the young (and may I say not so young!) men and women of SYA freely and selflessly donating their time and skills for the wellbeing of community. I commend you for the excellent ‘sewa’ you all do.’’ Leading the Culture Care team were Dr Daman Bhatia, Dr Kunwar Bhatia and Parneet Bhatia. All three are “graduates’’ of the SYA youth leadership and summer camp programs which have been running for the past several years. Dr Kunwar Bhatia has also represented SYA youth at a National Youth Leadership Forum held in Canberra. Apart from the Pop up Clinic, SYA was also involved in November with the ladies of the Pink Sari Project to raise Breast Cancer awareness among Sikh women in Sydney. Two talks in Punjabi on the subject by Mrs Kalwant Kaur saw many Sikh women sign up for breast screening. Similar talks in Revesby Gurdwara and in Turramurra Gurdwara also had a very positive effect. SYA spokesman Satwant Singh Calais said it was very pleasing to see the hard work of the past 16 years bearing fruit with youngsters who are now adults coming forward to take on the mantle of sewa in our community. Special thanks and gratitude is extended to the ASA Management Team who supported this event and contributed to the supply of pedometers to all participants as a tool to encourage them to take time out to do exercise. LNP Gains in Two New Queensland Polls By Adrian Beaumont PhD Student, Department of Mathematics and Statistics at University of Melbourne theconversation.com THE Queensland election will be held on 31 January. Two new Queensland polls from Galaxy and Newspoll, both published 10 January, show the Liberal National Party (LNP) gaining support from Other parties. As a result, the LNP clearly leads Labor on primary votes, and would very probably win an election held now. Newspoll has the LNP opening up a 53-47 lead, a 3% gain for the LNP since the October-December quarterly Newspoll. Primary votes are 42% for the LNP (up 5), 37% for Labor (up 1), 7% for the Greens (down 3) and 14% for all Others (down 3). I think the LNP Two Party Preferred (2PP) lead based on these primaries is more like 52-48 than 53-47. Newman’s satisfied rating is up 3% to 41%, and his dissatisfied rating is steady on 51%, for a net approval of -10, up from -13. Palaszczuk has a net zero rating, down from +4. 49% are strongly committed to voting for their chosen party, lower than at the same stage of previous elections, but LNP supporters are more committed than Labor supporters. 47% think the LNP will win the election, and 31% think Labor will win. This poll was taken last Tuesday (6 Jan) to Thursday (8 Jan) from a sample of 800. Galaxy also has the LNP improving to a 52-48 lead, a 2% gain for the LNP since a November Galaxy. Primary votes are 41% for the LNP (up 4), 38% for Labor (steady), 8%

for the Greens (down 1) and just 3% for Palmer United Party (PUP) (down 4). From these primaries, I think the 2PP is 51-49 to the LNP, not 52-48. Newman’s ratings were flat, with an approval of 41% and disapproval of 52%, for a net approval of -11, down from -10. Palaszczuk had a net approval of +1, up from zero net approval. This poll was conducted from a sample of 800, presumably on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The one encouraging sign from these polls for Labor is that the LNP gains came at the expense of minor parties, not Labor. This happened before in September, when PUP support first started shrinking, and Labor clawed back lost ground by November. There are still three weeks until the election, so it is possible that Labor could lift its primary vote again. In about the middle of 2014, PUP had well over 10%, and it was plausible that it could win a few seats, making a hung Parliament more likely. The latest polling shows that PUP has become greatly diminished, and is unlikely to win any seats. Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) won 11.5% of the vote and two seats at the 2012 election, but now it barely registers in polls, though their two existing members may still win due to personal vote effects. Queensland has never been a great state for the Greens, and on current polling they will probably do worse than their 7.5% at the 2012 election. With chances of a hung Parliament diminishing, the head to head battle between the two major parties will very probably decide this election. Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

Sister City honoured on anniversary BRISBANE City Council has presented sister city, Kobe in Japan with a special memorial plaque on the 20th anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that occurred on 17 January 1995. Acting Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the memorial plaque was a gift from Brisbane in recognition of Kobe’s resilience in the face of the terrible tragedy. “Brisbane’s relationship with our sister city Kobe was established in July 1985, well before the devastation of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake,” Cr Schrinner said. “Throughout this relationship, Brisbane and Kobe have supported each other during times of natural disaster, particularly through reciprocal fundraising in times of disaster recovery. “It is with the upmost respect that the city of Brisbane recognises the 20th anniversary of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake with the presentation of this memorial plaque.” The memorial plaque was presented by the Australian Consul-General in Osaka City,

Ms Catherine Taylor, to the Mayor of Kobe, Mr Kizo Hisamoto on 13 January at Kobe City Hall. Cr Schrinner said the plaque would be attached to a pavilion within HigashiYuenchi Park in Kobe City. “Brisbane’s memorial plaque to Kobe will be housed within Higashi-Yuenchi Park alongside the Earthquake Memorial Monument and the Great Hanshin Earthquake Memorial Flame,” he said. “The cast bronze plaque is a symbol of our commitment as sister cities to support each other in good times and in times of need. “This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Brisbane and Kobe and I look forward to strengthening our relationship over the coming years.” The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake measured 7.3 magnitude and at the time was the most destructive to hit Japan since 1923, resulting in infrastructure damage, injury and fatality in the southern part of the Hyogo Prefecture.

Need & help exchange for India SERVING the Nation through their website www.letshelp.co.in, which answers both ends – Where do we get donation? & Where do we get Charity? Donors as well as Charities are in search for match making between their Help & Need respectively. On launching of this virtual place of meeting, promoters declared it as “free service” for greater cause of India. National & International Donors, those having Money, Items, Time and Skill for needy ones, may post their Help in message box. Also Indian Charities, those are serving for underprivileged & needy ones, may post their needs & requirements. Both of them are free to search & contact each other on interested leads directly. Website is promoted, run and maintained by

few NRI Technocrats with the support from Indian state level volunteers. Their aim is to make it an “Exchange place of Need & Help” for deserving ones as their gratitude. Donors & Charities have started making use of this website since inception. It is assessed that www.letshelp.co.in will have very wide impact on Indian society at large within a year time.

Election important for Indian Queenslanders QUEENSLAND Minister responsible for Multicultural Affairs, Glen Elmes (pictured), said the Queensland election on 31 January is an important occasion for Indians across the state to recognise the increased support provided by the Newman Government. Mr Elmes said that Queensland’s Indian community is one of the longer established cultural groups, and makes a significant social and economic contribution to the state. The important role that Queensland’s Indian community plays in the future of the state has been emphasised by sig-

nificant funding provided to Indian cultural events in the latest round of Queensland Government funding under the Valuing Diversity program. Mr Elmes said the Newman Government in its first term has increased funding for specific Indian events such as: • $10,000 to the Brisbane Superkings Cricket Club and Access Community Services for the Multicultural Cricket Tournament Festival 2015; • $20,000 to Federation of Indian Communities in Queensland for Diwali 2015 festivities; • $20,000 to GOPIO Queensland for India Day Fair 2015; • $10,000 to Malayali Association of Townsville for Adani India Fest Townsville 2015; and • $10,000 to Indian Association of Central Queensland for Diwali - The 'Festival of Lights' celebration in Central

Queensland. “The Newman Government is pleased to support local multicultural events because they provide an opportunity to showcase different cultures, and for the wider population to be exposed to cultural experiences outside their everyday existence,” Mr Elmes said. “While the funded events specifically showcase Indian culture, the state’s Indian community is also an important part of many other multicultural festivals and events around the state where many different cultures are on show.

“I also take this opportunity to wish Queensland’s Indian community all the best for India Day celebrations occurring just before the State Election.”

stabs wife to death MELBOURNE: An Indian-origin man in has allegedly stabbed his wife to death, suspecting infidelity. Parminder Singh, 29, allegedly killed his 23year-old wife, Nikita Chawla, after he checked her mobile phone, which he believed confirmed his suspicions about her infidelity, a local court heard. After killing her in his house early yesterday (9 Jan), he called police and admitted to repeatedly stabbing his wife using a knife, prosecutors told the court. He was arrested from his house and charged with one count of murder.

The accused appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court and confessed to the killing following which he was remanded to custody to appear in the court on May 1. Singh sat in the dock with his head bowed as the court heard details of the incident. The accused made no application for bail. His lawyer informed the court that Singh had seen a psychiatrist in the past for anxiety issues. The court noted it was his first time in custody and arranged for a mental health assessment to take place. Police are conducting the investigation and CCTV footage, DNA and forensic evidence are being analysed. PTI

AirAsia QZ8501 crash: Plane believed to have exploded as it hit the sea, as black boxes discovered Loulla Mae Eleftherious Smith, The Independent - 12 Jan, 2015 THE AirAsia plane that disappeared more than two weeks ago over the Java sea is believed to have exploded as it hit the water, according to initial analysis of the wreckage, while a team of divers have now located both of the plane's black boxes. Indonesian navy divers managed to retrieve one of the boxes and locate the other underwater on Monday, marking a key development for investigators as they attempt to unravel what exactly caused the aircraft to plummet into the sea halfway through its journey.

Just hours after divers pulled the flight data recorder from beneath a piece of the aircraft's wing about 100 feet (30 metres) underwater and brought it to the surface, the team had discovered the cockpit voice recorder, Suryadi Bambang Supriyadi, operation coordinator for Indonesia's national search and rescue agency said. The voice recorder is still lodged beneath heavy wreckage however, which divers have been struggling to free from a depth of 105 feet (32 metres). It could be weeks before investigators manage to download the crucial data from the boxes, but initial analysis of the wreckage suggests the aircraft exploded as it

made impact with the sea. Supriyadi told reporters in Pangkalan Bun town on Borneo Island that the plane "exploded because of the pressure". "The cabin was pressurised and before the pressure of the cabin could be adjusted, it went down - boom. That explosion was heard in the area," he said from the search headquarters. The black boxes are vital to understanding what caused the AirAsia flight to lose contact with air traffic control on 27 December, as they include essential information such as the plane's vertical and horizontal speeds, engine temperature, and the final conversations between the captain and the

pilot. All 162 people on board were killed, but only 48 bodies have been recovered so far. Three Indonesian ships originally picked up intense pings from the boxes on Sunday, as search teams also discovered the fuselage, or main body, of the plane, but strong currents and poor visibility hindered search efforts until Monday. Once divers manage to dislodge the voice recorder, both black boxes will be taken to Jakarta for analysis, where it could take up to two weeks to download their information, according to Nurcahyo Utomo, an investigator at the National Committee for Safety Transportation.

Up to 6 Paris terror suspects may still be at large: Police PARIS, 13 January, 2015: As many as six members of a terrorist cell involved in the Paris attacks may still be at large, including a man who was seen driving a car registered to the widow of one of the slain gunmen, police officials said on Monday 12 January. Two French police officials told The Associated Press that authorities were searching the Paris area for the Mini Cooper registered to Hayat Boumeddiene, the widow of Amedy Coulibaly. She is now in Syria, according to Turkish officials. The French police officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss details of the investigation with the news media. France deployed 10,000 troops to protect sensitive sites, including Jewish schools and neighborhoods in the wake of the attacks that killed 17 people last week. Brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi, as well as Coulibaly, their friend who claimed ties to Islamic extremists in the Middle East, died Friday in clashes with police. Prime Minister Manuel Valls said the manhunt is urgent because "the threat is still present" after the attacks that began Wednesday with 12 people killed at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. A policewoman was killed on Thursday, and four people were slain at a kosher supermarket Friday before the gunmen were killed by police in two nearly simultaneous clashes with security forces around Paris.

Paris' Marais district, one of the country's oldest Jewish neighborhoods was filled with police and soldiers by midday Monday. About 4,700 of the security forces would be assigned to protect France's 717 Jewish schools, interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said. "A little girl was telling me earlier that she wanted to live in peace and learn in peace in her school," Cazeneuve as on a visit to a Paris Jewish classroom, where the walls were covered with children's drawings of smiling faces. "That's what the government, that's what the Republic, owes to all the children in France: security in all schools, especially in the schools that could be threatened," he added. The children listened and waved both Israeli and French flags. Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the nationwide deployment of troops would be completed by Tuesday and would focus on the most sensitive locations. "The work on these attacks, on these terrorist and barbaric acts continues ... because we consider that there are most probably some possible accomplices," Valls told BFM television. French police have said the Charlie Hebdo attacks were carried out by three people, but only two of those attackers - Cherif and Said Kouachi have been identified by authorities. Video emerged on Sunday (11 Jan) of Coulibaly explaining how the attacks in Paris would unfold. French police want to find the per-

son or persons who shot and posted the video, which was edited after the attacks. Boumeddiene was seen traveling through Turkey with a male companion before reportedly arriving in Syria with him on January 8, the day after the Charlie Hebdo attack and the same day Coulibaly began his murderous spree by killing the policewoman. Security camera video footage shown by Turkey's Haberturk newspaper showed Boumeddiene arriving at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport on January 2. A high ranking Turkish official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the woman on the video was Boumeddiene. Turkish intelligence then tracked Boumeddiene from her arrival. Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told the state-run Anadolu Agency that she had stayed at a hotel in Istanbul with another person before crossing into Syria. She and her traveling companion, a 23-year-old man, toured Istanbul, then left January 4 for a town near the Turkish border, according to a Turkish intelligence official who was not authorized to speak on the record. Her last phone signal was on January 8 from the border town of Akcakale, where she crossed over apparently into Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria, the official said. Their January 9 return plane tickets to Madrid went unused. AP

NRIs can now vote in Indian elections without coming to India NEW DELHI: Non-resident Indians (NRIs) will soon be able to cast their vote through electronic-ballots or through their nominees residing in India but will not be able to exercise their franchise through the novel method during the coming Delhi assembly polls. The Union government on informed the Supreme Court on Monday 12 January that it had accepted Election Commission's recommendation to allow NRIs to vote through e-ballot system or through proxy. The EC discarded other possibilities postal ballot and internet voting - terming them fraught with the danger of manipulation. After the Centre conveyed its acceptance of the EC recommendations on NRI voting, a bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice A K Sikri gave the Centre eight weeks to effect necessary amendments in the law to implement the EC suggestion. NCP had proposed postal ballot for NRIs while BJP, BSP and CPI had opined that postal ballot might not be a viable option for NRIs. Congress was not in favour of e-ballot for NRIs. Senior advocate Dushyant Dave, appearing for petitioner

Shamsheer V P, pushed another plea - voting rights for migrant labourers who constituted nearly 30% of the total population and facilities to enable armed forces personnel posted in remote and forward areas to cast their votes. The bench sought the Centre's response on the application. The EC examined several suggestions to enable NRIs to cast their vote and rejected the idea of allowing them to cast their votes at diplomatic missions abroad. "The committee is also of the view that internet voting is also not a feasible option until appropriate technology / information technology applications and all other vulnerabilities are addressed," the EC said. Postal ballot was also ruled out. A high-level EC committee said, "E-postal ballot, where blank postal ballot paper is transferred electronically to NRI and returned by post by NRI can be considered to be employed after proofing, validation of the process and pilot implementation in one or two constituencies in elections to the legislative assemblies and then scale up to more assembly elections and finally parliamentary elections if found feasible, practicable and meeting the objectives of free and fair election. Unsolved mysteries of India By Dhaval Vyas Ahmedabad, India Continued from last issue The Immortals of The Himalayas In many mythologies, mountains are natural homes to divine and immortal beings. As such, it’s no surprise that the world’s highest mountain range, the Himalayas, is subject to whisperings of mysterious beings hidden away in the valleys of the mountains. One popular legend among the practitioners of various New Age soul-searching methods is Gyanganj. It is said to be an ancient Indian and Tibetan tale of a city-kingdom of mysterious immortal beings that are hiding from the world, but influencing it in various subtle ways when needed. It is said that Gyanganj is cunningly camouflaged or even existing in a completely different form of reality, which is why it has managed to avoid being discovered by modern mapping techniques and satellites. However, the immortal, enlightened sadhus & mahatmas that inhabit it are all too happy to let in a visitor every now and then, perhaps even sharing some of their wisdom with them. Many influential gurus and mystics have claimed the source of their knowledge of the arcane comes from visits to this mysterious mountains. The Ladakh UFO Base The Kongka La Pass in Ladakh area is one of the least accessible places in the world. Located in the Himalayas, it is a border area of India and China and has been the cause of armed conflict between the two countries in the past years. As such, the area is more or less a no man’s land. Both countries keep an eye of it, but

Reportedly, the Kongka La Pass holds a series of massive, hidden underground constructs that UFOs, particularly those of the flying saucer type, use as their base of operations. Many travelers and residents of nearby areas have claimed that UFOs are a common sight in the area, rising from their underground lairs and descending back once they’ve done whatever it is UFOs go out to do. People say both Chinese and Indian governments are very aware of what’s going on and may even be cooperating with the extraterrestrials said to pilot the mysterious

airships. Indeed, Google Earth has revealed that some supposed underground entrances have what look a lot like military facilities built around them. It remains a mystery. The Bengal Ghost Light Swamps If someday your travels take you to the swamps of Bengal, be careful. Apart from all the regular dangers a swampland, they come with a very special brand of paranormal peril: mysterious lights that attempt to lure you to your doom. The Aleya Ghost Lights are a member of the eerie global family of ghost lights, also known as will-o’-the-wisps. They’re flying, glowing orbs that float above the marshland and lure unwary travelers in the distance. According to local lore, they’re the souls of fishermen who died acciden-

tally in that area, and anyone who approaches them either dies or goes irrevocably insane. Recently, modern science has been able to solve the mystery. Aleya’s creepy ghost lights are actually gases produced by the decaying organic matter in the swamps. Once it rises to the surface and comes in contact with oxygen, oxidization and ionization effects create an ominous photon glow in the air. To further add to the creepy beauty of the phenomenon, the lights are differently colored depending on the gas in question, which creates a multitude of differently colored spook lights. Jatinga-Assam (Mass Birds Suicides) The village of Jatinga in the Dima Hasao district of Assam has a population of around 3000. The village is world famous for its phenomenon of bird suicides. Most of the migratory birds visiting the area never leave the village and just drop to their death on the streets. The case gets even inscrutable in the sense that these birds plummet to their death precisely between 06:00 p.m. to 09:30 p.m. on the moonless nights of September and October. These mass suicides only occur on a specific 1 mile by 600 feet strip of land and this phenomenon is said to have occurred year after year without a break for more than a century. Many theories have been offered by scientists to explain this phenomenon, the most popular one being that these birds are attracted towards village lights that confuse them. Another theory that makes more sense is the presence of excessive magnetic field in the area that disorients them. Though more theories continue to arise, no one has yet been able to prove the exact explanation behind this phenomenon. Continued next issue... Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD A MERCY UNTO ALL Courtesy Imaam Nawaaz Allaah’s Messenger (S) was the kindest of men in the same way as he excelled all others in courage and valour. Being extremely kind-hearted, his eyes brimmed with tears at the slightest sign of inhumanity. A Companion, Shaddaad bin ‘Aws (R) reported the Messenger (S) as saying: “Allaah has commanded you to show kindness to everyone, so if you have to kill, kill in a good manner, and if you slaughter an animal, slaughter it gently. If anyone of you has to slay an animal, he should sharpen the blade first and treat the animal well.” Ibn ‘Abbaas (R) relates that a man threw a goat on its side and then started sharpening his knife. When the Prophet (S) saw him he said: “Do you want to kill it twice? Why did you not sharpen the knife before throwing it on the ground?” A Mercy for the Believers The Messenger’s compassion towards the believers was of the utmost degree. The Quran describes his compassion in the following verse, which means: “There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you [i.e., your guidance] and to the believers is kind and merciful.” [Quran: 9:128] Sa‘d bin ‘Ubaadah (R) once became ill, so Allaah’s Messenger (S) visited him in his house. On seeing his faithful Companion in a pitiful state, he was moved to tears. Then, he said: “Allaah does not punish because of tears, nor because of grief, but he punishes because of this.”- and he pointed to his tongue. [Al-Bukhaari] A Mercy Towards his Enemies The prisoners of war taken captive at the battle of Badr were amongst his bitterest enemies. Nevertheless, he Sallallaahu alaihi wa Sallam made sure that they were given the best of treatment. Among them was Suhayl bin ‘Amr who was a fiery speaker and was denouncing the Prophet (S). ‘Umar (R), one the Prophet’s closest companions, suggested that two of his lower teeth be pulled out so that he might not be so vile in his speeches. The Prophet (S) replied: “Were I to do this, Allaah would disfigure me on the Day of Judgement, despite the fact that I am His messenger.” In Makkah, his people inflicted him with every kind of suffering, eventually forcing him to emigrate to Madeenah, and then waged war on him for five years. However, when he conquered Makkah without bloodshed in the twenty-first year of his Prophethood, he asked the Makkan unbelievers who were awaiting his decision about them: “How do you expect me to treat you?” They responded unanimously: “You are a noble one, the son of a noble one.” He announced to them his decision: “You may go free! No reproach this day shall be on you; may God forgive you.” A Mercy for Women Prophet Muhammad (S) was also very kind and affectionate towards women. Women were very badly treated in those times. The Noble Prophet (S) gave them honour and dignity at par with men in the community. ‘Umar (R) reported: “We did not have much regard for women while we were at Makkah, but they were better treated in Madeenah. Allaah’s Messenger established women’s rights through his sayings and commandments, which improved their position and status.” A Mercy for Children Allaah’s Messenger (S) was particularly compassionate towards children. When he saw a child crying, he sat beside him or her and shared his or her feelings. He felt the pain of a mother for her child more than the mother herself. Once he said: “I stand in prayer and wish to prolong it. However, I hear the cry of a child and cut the prayer short for the anxiety which the mother is feeling.” [Al-Bukhaari] He would take children in his arms and embrace them. He was once hugging his beloved grandsons, Hasan® and Husayn®, when Aqrah bin Haabis told him, ‘I have got ten children. So far, I have not kissed any of them.’ Allaah’s Messenger (S) responded: “The one with no pity for Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

others is not pitied.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] According to another version, he (S) said: “What can I do for you if Allaah has removed from you the feeling of compassion?” [At-Tirmithi] A Mercy for Slaves The Prophet (S) strongly enjoined the duty of kind and generous treatment upon slaves, servants and labourers engaged in manual work. Jaabir R related the Apostle of Allaah (S) as saying: “Feed them with the food which you eat, clothe them with such clothing as you wear, and do not cause trouble to Allaah’s creatures.” The Apostle (S) is further stated to have said: “Those whom Allaah has made your dependents are your brothers, servants and helpmates. Anybody whose brother has been made subservient to him ought to feed him with the food he eats and clothe him with the clothes he wears; command him not to do that which he is unable to do and if it becomes necessary to do so then he should help him in doing the job.” A Mercy for Animals His compassion encompassed not only human beings, but also animals. The Prophet (S) forbade his companions to keep the animals hungry or thirsty, to disturb or to overburden them. He commended that kindness and putting them at ease were meritorious acts tending to bring man nearer to Allaah. Abu Hurayrah R reports the Prophet (S) as saying: “A traveller who was thirsty saw a well in the way. He got inside the well and when he came out he saw a dog licking mud due to thirst. The man realised that the dog was as thirsty as him, so he got into the well again, filled his leather sock with water and carried it out holding it with his teeth. Thus, he quenched the thirst of the dog. Allaah was pleased with this act of kindness and pardoned his sins.” The Companions asked: “O Messenger of Allaah, is there recompense in the matter of beasts and wild animals also?” The Prophet (S) replied: “There is recompense in regard to every creature that has a living heart.” ‘Abdullaah bin ‘Umar R related that the Prophet(S) said: “A woman was cast away to hell only because she had withheld food and water from her cat and refused to set it free so that the cat might satisfy its hunger by eating worms and insects.” Once on return from a military campaign, a few Companions took away the chicks of a bird from their nest to stroke them. The mother bird came back and when it could not find its chicks in the nest, it began to fly around screeching. When informed of the matter, Allaah’s Messenger (S) became angry and ordered the chicks to be put back in the nest. [Abu Daawood] The love and compassion of Allaah’s Messenger for all kinds of creatures was not of the kind claimed by today’s ‘humanists’. He was sincere and balanced in his love and compassion. He was more compassionate than any other person. He was a Prophet raised by Allaah, the Creator and Sustainer of all beings, for the guidance and happiness of conscious beings - mankind and jinn - and the harmony of existence. Therefore, he lived not for himself but for others; he is a mercy for all the worlds. “Indeed, in this [Quran] is notification for a worshipping people. And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”[Quran: 21:106-107] Miracles of Prophet Muhammad * The noble Quran The polytheists of the Quraysh gathered to consult each other on a strategy to prevent Prophet Muhammad (S) from inviting people to Islam, especially as the Hajj (pilgrimage) season was nearing, and the Prophet (S) would surely call people to embrace Islam during it. They agreed on warning people against listening to the Prophet (S). Among the pilgrims was At-Tufayl ibn ‘Amr Ad-Dawsi, the chief of the tribe of Daws. The polytheists warned him about listening to the Prophet (S) and claimed that he was a sorcerer and a poet, so At-Tufayl put pieces of cotton in his ears so that he would not be able to listen to the Prophet . Once, At-Tufayl went to the Ka‘bah and found the Prophet (S) praying and reciting

(Sallallaahu alaihi wa Sallam):

the Quran and Allaah The Almighty willed that At-Tufayl listened to him. When he listened, he knew that what he had listened to was neither poetry nor magic, as At-Tufayl was a poet himself. Thus, when the Prophet (S) finished his prayer, At-Tufayl followed him home and told him what the polytheists had said. Then he asked the Prophet to explain Islam to him. When he heard the Da‘wah (call) of Islam, he believed in Allaah The Almighty, His Messenger and the Book he (S) was sent with. The reversion of Tufayl was one of the blessings of the Quran. After this, he went to his tribe and invited them to Islam. The noble Quran is the Speech of Allaah The Almighty and the eternal miracle of His Prophet Muhammad (S). Allaah The Almighty sent it down to the people of rhetoric and challenged them to compose one Surah (Chapter) or even one verse like it, but they were unable to do so. The Quran is the firm Rope of Allaah The Almighty, and whoever adheres to it will be saved by it; whoever follows it will be guided to the right path. * The splitting of the moon Imaam Al-Bukhaari R and Imaam Muslim R both, narrated that Abu Jahl, AlWaleed ibn Al-Mugheerah, Al-‘Aas ibn Waa’il and a large number of the polytheists from the Quraysh went to the Prophet (S) and said, “O Muhammad! If you are truthful in what you say, then split the moon for us into two pieces.” The Prophet (S) pointed to the moon with his shahaadah finger and the moon split and people saw it and the Prophet (S) made them bear witness [to that], but they disbelieved. [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] * Al-Israa’ and Al-Mi‘raaj (The Prophetic Journey and the Ascension) When the polytheists intensified the harm they had inflicted on the Prophet (S), Allaah The Almighty wanted to relieve his pains and bring him closer, so the journey of AlIsraa’ and Al-Mi‘raaj took place. Jibreel A went to the Prophet (S) with AlBuraaq (a riding mount). The Prophet (S) mounted it and he was taken from AlMasjid Al-Haraam to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa where he led all the Prophets in prayer, then he was taken to the upper heavens. During this journey, prayer was ordained, and the Prophet (S) returned to Makkah on the same night. * Increasing small amounts of food During the Battle of the Trench, the polytheists besieged Madeenah, and the Prophet (S) and his Companions R were digging a trench around Al-Madeenah in order to prevent the polytheists from entering it. The Muslims ran out of food and they were starving. Jaabir R wanted to provide the Prophet(S) and his Companions with food, but he had a small amount of barley and a small sheep. Thus, Jaabir R went to the Prophet (S) and invited him along with a small number of the Companions but the Prophet (S) called out loudly: “O people! Jaabir has made food for you, so let us go!” The Prophet ordered Jaabir R to wait for him before he prepared the food, and when he arrived there, he (S) blessed the food. The Companions entered in groups until they all ate and the food remained the same. Jaabir R said, “By Allaah! The fighters were one thousand on that day.” [Al-Bukhaari] * The trunk of a palm tree longs for the Prophet (S) The Prophet (S) used to deliver his Khutbah (sermon) while standing beside the trunk of a date palm tree. When the Companions made a pulpit for him, he(S) left the trunk and stood on the pulpit. The Companions heard a sound that was similar to the sound of a she-camel crying. The Prophet (S) knew that it was the trunk weeping for having been separated from him. He went to it and placed his hand over it, so it calmed down. [Ahmad and AtTirmithi] Prophet Muhammad’s trust in Allaah Muhammad (S) preached to the people to trust in Allaah. His whole life was a sublime example of the precept. In the loneliness of Makkah, in the midst of persecution and danger, in adversity and tribulations, and in the thick of enemies in the battles of Uhud

and Hunayn, complete faith and trust in Allaah appears as the dominant feature in his life. However great the danger that confronted him, he (S) never lost hope and never allowed himself to be unduly agitated. Abu Taalib knew the feelings of the Quraysh when the Prophet (S) started his mission. He also knew the lengths to which the Quraysh could go, and requested the Prophet (S) to abandon his mission, but the latter calmly replied: “Dear uncle, do not go by my loneliness. Truth will not go unsupported for long. The whole of Arabia and beyond will one day espouse its cause.” When the attitude of the Quraysh became more threatening, Abu Taalib again begged his nephew to renounce his mission but the Prophet’s reply was: “O my uncle, if they placed the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left, to force me to renounce my work, verily I would not desist therefrom until Allaah made manifest His cause, or I perished in the attempt.” Hadeeth To another well-wisher, he (S) said: “Allaah will not leave me forlorn.” A dejected and oppressed companion was comforted with the words: “By Allaah, the day is near when this faith will reach its pinnacle and none will have to fear anyone except Allaah.” [Al-Bukhaari] It was the same trust in Allaah which emboldened the prophet (S) to say his prayers openly in the Haram (sacred Mosque of Makkah) in the teeth of opposition. The Quraysh were once collected there and were conspiring to put an end to his life when he next entered the Haram. His young daughter Faatimah R who happened to overhear their talk rushed weeping to her father and told him of the designs of the Quraysh. He (S) consoled her, did his ablutions and went to the Ka’bah to say prayers. There was only consternation among the Quraysh when they saw him. [Ahmad]. Then leaving his house for Madeenah he (S) asked Ali R to sleep on his bed and told him: “Do not worry, no one will be able to do you any harm”[At-Tabari] Even though the enemies had surrounded the house, he (S) left the house reciting the Quranic verse (which means): “We have set a barricade before them and a barricade behind them and (thus) have covered them so that they see not” [Quran, 36: 9] Abu Bakr R was frightened when pursuers came close to the cavern in which he and Prophet Muhammad (S) hiding during their flight, but the Prophet (S) heartened him: “Grieve not. Allaah is with us.” A guard was kept at the Prophet’s house in Madeenah because of the danger that surrounded him but he had it withdrawn when the Quranic verse was revealed (which means): “Allaah will protect you from the people”. [Quran, 5: 67] A man was caught waiting in ambush to assault the Prophet (S) but he was directed to be released with the words: “Even if this man wanted to kill me, he could not.” [Ahmad] A Jewish woman from Khaybar had put poison in the Prophet’s food. He (S) spat it out after taking a morsel but a companion who had his fill died the next day. The Jewess was brought before the prophet (S) who questioned her: “Why did you do this?” “To kill you,” was her defiant reply. She was told, “Allaah would not have allowed you to do it.” [Muslim] In the battle of Uhud when the rear guard action of the Makkan army had disorganized the Muslim army and had turned the tables, the Prophet (S) stood as firm as a rock even though he (S) had suffered personal injuries. When Abu Sufiyaan taunted the Muslims and shouted “Victory to Hubal!” (Hubal was one of their idols), the Prophet (S) asked Umar R to shout back: “Allaah is our protector and friend. You have no protector and friend. Allaah is Great, Magnificent.” [Ibn Hishaam] Again in the battle of Hunayn, when the unexpected assault of the army had swept the Muslim force off its feet and a defeat seemed imminent, the Prophet (S) did not yield ground. With trust in Allaah he showed such courage that the Muslim army rallied behind him to win a signal victory.

Morality Jitendra Deo President Continued from last issue

ALFRED WALLACE, co-discover of the Theory of Evolution, writes in his book ‘Social Environment and Moral Progress’ — “In the earliest records which have come down to us from the past, we find ample indications that the accepted standards of morality, and the conduct resulting from these were in no way inferior to those which prevail today, though in some aspects they did differ from ours. The wonderful collection of hymns, known as Veda, is a vast system of religious teachings as pure and lofty as those of the finest portions of the Hebrew scriptures” We must admit that the mind which conceived and expressed in appropriate language such ideas as are

everywhere present in these Vedic hymns, are in no way inferior to those of the best of our religious teachers and poets to our Shakespeare, Milton and Tennyson.” Where is the scope for a social evolution, if the teachings of the Vedas which are decidedly the oldest books in the library of mankind are found to be as lofty and pure? It is evident that the higher up towards the source of religion we push our enquiries, the purer, and the simpler do we come to find the Vedic conception of God; and as we come down the stream of time, the more corrupt and complex do we find it. The inevitable conclusion, therefore, is that the development of religious thought in India has been uniformly downward, and not upward that of deterioration, and not of evolution. We are thus justified in concluding that these higher and purer conceptions of the Vedic Aryans were the results of a primitive divine Revelation. WHY VEDA ALONE? VEDA means wit, wisdom and knowledge and truly Veda is a Samhita of wit, wisdom and knowledge. It is a multi-book of wisdom and knowledge, comprising the Book of Nature, the Book of Knowledge, the

DEAR BIT Readers, We hope and pray that in 2015 you will be inspired to go after your dreams and visions by learning to trust that God who has good plan for your life. Prophet Jeremiah writes the promise of God who wants your welfare and peace and not evil, He wants to give you hope and good future (Jeremiah 29:11). This requires your part of commitment to walk with God humbly and know Him through His Word and Spirit. Best way to say goodbye to 2013 is to let go hurts and disappointments caused by others or yourself. If you ever want to do a great favour to your self or help yourself, begin to forgive and accept yourself. Renew your mind with new way of thinking that is aligned with the truth, which is only found in Word of God. Joyce Myer says, God is not mad at you or angry at you. God Choose to forgive us, when He sent His Son Jesus as a ransom for all human beings on this earth. For every one of us have fallen short of God’s perfect way to live the life without a single sin. Jesus took all sins of the world to empower us victory over our enemy. When we understand this, we begin to develop a happy mind. Only happy mind can show to turn 2014 into a year of hope, peace and joy. We must learn to renew our mind; we must develop a quest for application of true wisdom in order to navigate through life’s challenges. The Apostle Paul makes a powerful statement in a letter to the Romans written around 2000 years ago. He writes, ‘Do not be conformed to this world (this age), but

be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you prove what is acceptable and perfect will of God’. (Romans 12:2) Let’s begin this inspiration journey with a simple question. Do you know your true potential? Or do you understand your true purpose in life? Potential is…untapped talent… hidden strength…dormant ability…unused success. Potential is unexposed ability and latent power according to Dr. Munroe, noted author and a teacher. This further illustration from Dr. Munroe about the word ‘potential’ will shock you and inspire you to reach your dreams. Take a look at the Australia’s mining potential, it was buried waiting to be explored and profited from its hidden treasures. Dr. Munroe questions us to identify ‘what is the wealthiest spot on this planet?’ Is it gold and diamond mines of Africa? Or is it oil fields of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia? No, none of these. Want a surprise? The wealthiest deposits on our planet may be just a few blocks from your home or suburb. They rest in the local cemetery or graveyard. Do not go digging, but dig deep inside your mind to think outside the box. Buried beneath the sacred soil of the graveyard are the dreams that never came to pass, songs and books they were never written or published, paintings that never filled a canvass, ideas that were never used, visions that were never become realities, inventions that were never designed to final product, plans that never went beyond the drawing board of the mind. Our graveyards are filled with rich potentials. That is a national tragedy. Let’s run the race together with the grace of God in 2015 to learn how to be inspired so we can fulfil our potential before we end up at the local graveyard. For the Wisdom will enter your heart and the knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Email: navig8grace@gmail.com

Welcome 2015 Pastor Joseph Dass DEAR reader, it is with great joy we bring you the word of God. While going through this festive season and looking forward to the New Year we can forget to realise that it is another year filled with so many opportunities. We can also let go of these opportunities if we don’t learn how to seize them. If you were to give out an opportunity, one child will take it and the other won’t. It is the same for us. We cannot depend on time or a calendar to make the best of the opportunities before us, but by trusting God who made time, periods and seasons. This means you should see each day as a gift from God and have no time for things that do not add value to you. If someone has a problem with you, they cannot stop you from making the best of the opportunity before you. If a thought tries to ruin your day, then they cannot keep you from seizing the opportunity before Book of Religion and the Book of Morals. Veda is the only book on earth which deals with ‘Para’ (esoteric or spiritual) as well as ‘Apara’ (exoteric or worldly) sciences. But there are many other holy books which claim Divine origin for themselves. How should we know which of them is really divinely revealed? True, but it is not difficult to determine it after we apply the essential tests. 1. The Supreme knowledge emanates from the same Lord as is the creator of the universe and to whom we give our physical existence in this life and the lives to come. Therefore, there should be no contradiction between what we read in the texts and what we observe in the universe. For example the word cow is in the Ved and it’s a particular animal known by that name in the world.

you. Scripture tells us that we are to redeem the time. That means we are to make the best use of the time we have. We are to seize and make the best of the opportunities we can have. While Jesus was on earth, His disciples learned how to seize the opportunities before them. The religious leaders were not too impressed with His methods of operation or His disciple’s behaviour. On one occasion, Jesus told them that no one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wineskin bursts the old wineskins, the new wine is spilled and the wineskins are ruined. But the new wine must be put into new wineskins. Jesus was explaining that He was giving them new opportunities but they could not receive them with their old mind set or old way of thinking. They could not seize and make the best use of the opportunities given to them for they won’t allow their minds to be renewed. Friend, we have this great opportunity of going into a season of another new year. It requires a new mind set and trust in God to seize this opportunities that lie before us. God bless you Pastor Joseph Dass Commenting on it, James Hastings, in his Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics says — “Dayanand tried to make the Book of God resemble the Book of Nature.” 2. God is holy, formless, all-pervading, allknowing, all-powerful, just, benevolent and never subject to birth and death. The book, that describes its author exactly as he is, shall be accepted as divinely’ revealed. Health Beauty Wellbeing Hair shedding.... Nimisha Modi Hetvi Hair & Beauty - 04 123 500 13

HEY Girls, wishing you a Happy & Prosperous New Year. I am sure you have enjoyed your well-deserved break in holiday season. It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day however, when your body sheds significantly more hair every day, it is not a good sign. Excessive hair shedding is common in people who have experienced one the following stressors: • Lost 10 Kg or more • Given birth • Experiencing lots of stress (Caring for a loved one who is sick, going through a divorce, losing a job)

• Had high fever • Undergone an operation • Recovering from an illness, especially if had a high fever • Stopped taking birth-control pills Most people notice the excessive hair shedding a few months after the stressful event. For example, a new mom can see excessive hair shedding about two months after giving birth. The shedding usually peaks about four months after giving birth. This shedding is normal — and temporary. As your body readjusts, the excessive shedding stops. Within 6 to 9 months, the hair tends to regains its normal fullness. If the stressor stays with you, however, hair shedding can be long lived. People who are constantly under a lot of stress can have long-term excessive hair shedding. Use shampoo and conditioner that add volume. Here’s what hair stylist recommend

using and avoiding: 1. Use a volatizing shampoo. These shampoos tend to contain ingredients like protein that coat the hair, making the hair appear fuller. 2. Avoid any shampoo labelled “conditioning shampoo.” These contain heavy conditioners that can weigh down the hair and make it look limp. 3. Use a conditioner formulated for fine hair. These contain lighter formulas that

will not weigh down hair. 4. Use conditioner primarily on the ends of your hair. Applying conditioner to your scalp and all of your hair tends to weigh down hair. 5. Avoid conditioners labelled “intensive conditioners.” These are too heavy. Finding the best shampoo and conditioner for thin hair is really a matter of trial and error. A single ingredient that makes a volumizing shampoo or conditioner for fine hair better than the rest does not exist. Many new mothers prefer short hair. A short style can make hair look fuller. Short hair also can be easier to manage, which can save time. With a baby, anything that saves time can be a real boon. Try a new hairstyle. Some haircuts make your hair look fuller. An experienced stylist can tell you what will work for you. Hope this will help to you. See you next time. Nimisha

Follow these six lifestyle habits to avoid a heart attack hree-quarters of heart attacks in T young women could be prevented if they closely followed six healthy lifestyle practices, researchers have found. Healthy habits were defined as not smoking, a normal body mass index, physical activity of at least two and half hours per week, watching seven or fewer hours of television a week, consumption of a maximum of one alcoholic drink per day on an average, and a healthy diet. "We waned to find out what proportion of heart disease cases could be attributed to unhealthy habits," said lead author Andrea Chomistek, researcher at Indiana University School of Public Health, Bloomington. For the study, the researchers followed nearly 70,000 women for two decades. During 20 years of follow-up, 456 women

had heart attacks and 31,691 women were diagnosed with one or more cardiovascular disease risk factors, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or high levels of blood cholesterol. The researchers found that women who adhered to all six healthy lifestyle practices had a 92% lower risk of heart attack and a 66% lower risk of developing a risk factor for heart disease. This lower risk would mean three quarters of heart attacks and nearly half of all risk factors in younger women may have been prevented if all of the women had adhered to all six healthy lifestyle factors, the authors said. The findings appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. HT

Health Beauty Wellbeing Spend high quality me-time to boost productivity at work

Just two hours of exposure to diesel fumes can harm genes

HIGH quality me-time not only improves your psychological wellbeing it can also make you a more engaged employee, scientists have found. Dr Almuth McDowall at Birkbeck, University of London undertook two studies to ascertain whether the quantity and quality of me-time was associated with better work-life balance, wellbeing and engagement at work. In the first study, 18 professionals completed a daily diary on their perceptions and experiences of me-time over a month. The second study involved 344 professionals who com-

JUST two hours of exposure to air pollution caused by diesel exhaust fumes can lead to fundamental health-related changes in biology by switching some genes on while switching others off, new research has found. "This study shows how vulnerable our genetic machinery can be to air pollution, and that changes are taking place even if there are no obvious symptoms," the researchers noted. Such exposure affected the chemical "coating" called methylation, that attaches to many parts of a person's DNA, the findings showed. Methylation is one of several mechanisms for controlling gene expression. "Any time you can show something happens that quickly, it means you can probably reverse it - either through a therapy, a change in environment, or even diet," said senior author Chris Carlsten, an

pleted a questionnaire regarding work-life balance, family relationships, engagement at work and life satisfaction. Analysis showed that those who experienced high quality, rather than the most, me-time enjoyed better work-life balance, wellbeing and were more engaged at work.

Happiness: A state of mind By Thilliar Varnakulasingham

Happiness is pleasure and cheerfulness It is elation and jubilation Happiness is blessedness and gladness It is merriment and ambrosia

Reflect on your present blessings Not on your past misfortunes Which all human beings face Asserts immortal novelist Charles Dickens

Is happiness a vague word? No, because a chunk of happiness Is often controlled by your genes However, you can still make yourself happier

Happiness is associated with the mind Purely subjective and intensely personal Happiness has a pervasive effect on wellbeing One’s food is another’s poison The mind is consciousness and perception It manifests thought and emotion But what we need is feeling Which instils meanings in life

Happiness improves cognition and creativity Enhances alertness, attentiveness and judgment Promotes love, peace and fellowship And is more contagious than unhappiness

"Me-time is a much talked about concept usually because people lament that they don't have any. Interestingly we found that me-time doesn't have to be solitary and is more beneficial if it involves freely chosen activities," McDowall said. "Overall our research suggests if people take time out to recharge their batteries and experience the time taken out as high quality, this reaps benefits for their own psychological wellbeing, their family relationships and for their employers as they are more likely to perform better at work," McDowall said. 6 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Body and Your Planet By Alessandro R Demaio Australian Medical Doctor; Postdoctoral Fellow in Global Health & NCDs at Harvard University www.theconversation.com

ANOTHER year over, and a new one just begun. Happy New Year and may it be a wonderful one! As 2015 begins, but before it starts to speed away, many of us will be taking a moment to look back. A brief chance to take stock of the past and with this in mind, plan changes for the future. Many of us will be casting our resolutions. But this year, going into the countdown to some major hurdles for the human race and the planet - including the framing of the new post-2015 Millennium Development Goal replacements and the major Paris meeting on Climate Change - can our resolutions be more than just about ourselves? Here are 6 New Year’s Resolutions for your body - but also for your planet. 1. Walk more, drive less

Is wealth essential for happiness? Money is something, not everything Money can buy many commodities But cannot purchase genuine happiness

Are we happier than our forefathers? Definitely not But in terms of communication, health, education Recreation, media we are ahead Material wealth brings some happiness But it has nothing to do with justice, Family attachment and other virtues Will trends change for the better?

To be happy and open to change It is wise to live in the present Everything happens for a reason So it is prudent to look within for solutions

Wealth, education, age and attractiveness Don’t make people really happy But positive thinking, the ability to forgive And strong social relationships promote happiness Religion provides a personal creed A direction in life, while prayer Promotes calmness, serenity and tranquillity Elevates eequanimity, placidity and repose Humility, compassion, zeal and benevolence Are essential traits for happiness? Do what you are good at To achieve satisfaction and happiness

associate professor at University of British Columbia in Canada. For the study, the researchers exposed volunteers to diluted and aged exhaust fumes that are about equal to the air quality along a Beijing highway, or a busy port in British Columbia. Diesel exhaust caused changes in methylation at about 2,800 different points on people's DNA, affecting about 400 genes. In some places it led to more methylation; in more cases, it decreased methylation, the findings showed. Methylation changes on several places in the genome that have a direct bearing on lung health, the researchers added. One of those changes would lead to less production of a protein called GSTP1, which helps "clean up" toxic molecules that disrupt the normal functioning of cells. The study appeared in the journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology.

It’s not always easy and I appreciate how nice it is to take the car on those cold mornings, or a steaming hot afternoon. But leaving the car and walking not only cuts your climate emissions (cars make up about 7.5% of Australia’s emisions) but is also great for your heart, your brain and your mind. Exercise, even walking, is protective against heart disease, dementia and helps to reduce stress. Even driving partway and walking the last few miles! Dropping the car is a great step forward, and a healthy option for you and your surrounds. 2. Eat less meat, eat better quality It might surprise you, but 30% of Global Greenhouse Gasses come from what we eat - from food production. And a vast amount of this is generated by a small portion of our plate: meat. In fact, beef and lamb are by far the worst at soiling the global and local environments. Each kilogram uses 15,500 litres

• Flickr / vanhookc, CC BY-SA

of water to produce and creates 30-40 kg of carbon dioxide (the same as driving 60-90 miles). Grazing occupies 26% of the earth’s ice-free land, and feed crop production uses about one third of all arable areas. I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Eating less, for example being a vegetarian during the week and leaving meat for weekends; eating better quality, keeping beef for very special occasions and wherever possible, sourcing it carefully to ensure the animals and the planet are taken care of - is a great start to a healthier future. 3. Buy local, buy in season, buy fresh In 2015, take on a big challenge reconnect with food. Take the time to learn what is in season (usually what is cheap, fresh and most tasty) and what is local. It might mean trying some new recipes or swapping things around depending on the time of year. It might also mean a week of leafy greens in summer and a fortnight of broccoli come colder months, but fresh is usually best and local means fewer carbon miles. 4. Reconsider that second drink Now I know this one might have been a challenge on the 31st, but in the New Year it is a good time to think - or rethink - about the amount of alcohol we drink. Being sure to keep days free of drinking throughout each week and challenge our need to accompany that hard day’s end, an exciting win or a first date with an alcoholic beverage. And with each glass of beer using up to 75 litres of water to produce, cutting back is a wise move for your liver, your cancer risk and your planet.

www.indiantimes.com.au

5. Drink tap water, lose the sweet bubbles There are few things in this world that give us nothing and take a lot - but soft drink, or soda is one. It takes enormous amounts of energy to produce, comes wrapped in a petroleum or aluminium casing, is empty calories that sit on our waistlines and is linked with diseases like obesity and diabetes. This year, break the habit and swap sweetened drinks for water. Going one better though, if you live in a region with great tap water as I do in Melbourne, then give away bottled water too and keep the saltzer as a sometimes treat. Water is almost always best. 6. Practice and preach mindfulness The final piece in your New Year’s puzzle is the one I find most challenging. Having taken care of your planet and of your body - remember to take care of your mind. Just a few minutes of mindfulness each day resets the body, centres your focus and allows a moment to reflect. This might be a session in the garden, some yoga with friends, a walk in a local park or a quiet catch up with a close buddy. Whatever it is that rests your mind and helps you unwind. Connecting with yourself and being mindful of what 2015 has and will bring. As the new year dawns, this is a great opportunity to make small changes in all our lives to better our health, the health of those around us, and the health of the planet. After all, small changes add up. Happy New Year. Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

Health Beauty Wellbeing Beauty tutorials: DIY facials Tips for a healthy heart to help you start the new year with renewed vigour THE more optimistic you are, the better it is for your health. Those who have an upbeat outlook on life have significantly better cardiovascular health than that of the pessimists, new research has found. Optimism boosts overall health but its positive impact on the heart is even greater, the findings showed. "Individuals with the highest levels of optimism have twice the odds of being in ideal cardiovascular health compared to their more pessimistic counterparts," said lead author Rosalba Hernandez, a professor of social work at the University of Illinois. "This association remains significant even after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and poor mental health," Hernandez added.

Queensland Health's response to anti-vaccination discussions by Dr Sonya Bennett QUEENSLAND Health is not involved in any capacity with the ‘Healthy Lifestyles Naturally’ seminars soon to be conducted in Queensland and does not in any way support anti-vaccination sentiments. It is ironic that the seminars are called ‘Healthy Lifestyles Naturally’ as anti-vaccination discussions threaten the health of the community. Vaccine preventable diseases such as whooping cough, measles, meningococcal disease and rotavirus are serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Homeopathic products do not provide protection against these diseases. We seek to minimise misinformation preventing a person from making an informed decision about immunisation. In the interests of a healthy community, Queensland Health is conducting a campaign to debunk these common myths about immunisation and remind people of the value and importance of vaccination. Modern vaccination programs have been

The study examined associations between optimism and heart health in more than 5,100 adults. Participants' cardiovascular health was assessed using seven metrics: blood pressure, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose and serum cholesterol levels, dietary intake, physical activity and tobacco use. They also completed surveys that assessed their mental health, levels of optimism and physical health. People who were the most optimistic were twice as likely to have ideal cardiovascular health, and 55 percent more likely to have a total health score in the intermediate range, the researchers found. The study appeared in the journal Health Behavior and Policy Review. HT

established after rigorous scientific studies to ensure the best possible health outcomes for individuals and the population as a whole. Many anti-vaccination claims are based on poorly conducted studies that have been discredited or disproven, such as claims that vaccinations cause SIDS or autism. These claims are entirely baseless. Governments and numerous expert bodies worldwide support immunisation because it prevents serious and life-threatening infectious diseases. Questions on this topic are best directed to the experts, such as an immunisation provider or your family doctor, with whom you would discuss other health questions. The fact is that if vaccination stopped, vaccine preventable diseases would inevitably return causing devastation for many families. There is a range of information available online at www.qld.gov.au/vaccinate Concerns about the seminars should be directed to the event organiser.

WE all have some friends, relatives or colleagues who don't put on weight no matter how much they eat or how little they exercise. But not all of us are that lucky, with some putting on a kilo by just looking at food. Worry not, here's how you can follow a smart, healthy lifestyle and welcome a fitter you without sweating it out for hours at the gym. Adopt simple habits like taking the stairs instead of the lift, switching junk food with healthy bites and eventually, picking a fun, physical activity to keep your body toned. Take note, and thank us later. Be on the move: When your body is not in motion, it tends to put on weight. So try and move about as much as possible. We all know that taking the stairs instead of elevators is a healthy practice, but how many of us actually do that? Start doing it right away! Also, it's a good idea to walk as you talk on the phone or cover the distance till the metro station on foot. When at work, don't sit at your desk for long hours. Get up from your seat, do some stretching or step out for five-minute breaks, a few times a day. Sleep for a sexier you: Sleep deprivation interferes with hormones that regulate appetite, resulting in frequent hunger pangs and hence, more calorie intake. Also, you tend to succumb to eating to raise your energy level. Hence, sleep is not just necessary for a younger-looking you, but also a for a fitter you. So, make sure you sleep for 7-8 hours every day. Pick an activity: Physical activity results in calorie burning. So what if gymming isn't your thing, there are many other fun ways to sweat it out. It can be something as simple as a morning walk, evening jog,

running, cycling or swimming or a bit more challenging like kickboxing, yoga, pilates, aerobics or karate. Or, just play a sport that interests you. You can also dance your way to fitness by learning hip-hop, zumba, etc. Indulge in health: All your efforts will go for a toss if you keep munching on chips, chocolates and other fattening bites. Stock up on some low fat snacking options like fruits and juices for times when hunger comes calling. Start your day with a heavy but nutritious breakfast, and try and limit your calorie intake during lunch and dinner. Choose from healthier options like steaks, salads and soups instead of desi ghee paranthas, oily curries and calorie-loaded smoothies. Whole grains like brown rice, barley and oats are also a good pick, as they fill you up with fewer calories. Also, limit your alcohol intake and switch to green tea. Reward yourself: All work and no play will not help. If you're following a healthy regime religiously, make sure you also reward yourself with a day sans restrictions, every two weeks. Skip your chosen physical activity and pamper yourself with your favourite treat, even if it's fattening! This way you will not feel all frustrated and won't give up on the fitness plan. HT

Explainer: what is gastroenteritis and why can’t I get rid of it? By Vincent Ho Lecturer and clinical academic gastroenterologist at University of Western Sydney www.theconversation.com

WE’VE all experienced the abdominal cramps and the urge to get to a toilet – quickly! When the stomach and intestinal tract become inflamed, our bodies respond with the sudden onset of diarrhoea, associated nausea and vomiting, abdominal cramping and pain. Transmissible gastroenteritis is colourfully known as “Montezuma’s revenge”, “Delhi belly”, “stomach flu” and “viral gastro” but let’s use the term “infectious gastroenteritis”. This includes food poisoning, where bacterial toxins consumed in contaminated food rapidly cause symptoms. Although infectious gastroenteritis usually resolves on its own, in some cases it can lead to severe consequences, chiefly through dehydration. Worldwide, 1.45 million people die from infectious gastroenteritis each year. Symptoms can occur as soon as 30 minutes after exposure to the culprit organism or toxin. But most often, symptoms develop 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Acute infectious gastroenteritis usually resolves within two weeks but severe cases can last several weeks. Causes Viruses such as rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus and astrovirus are common causes of infectious gastroenteritis. Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children. Almost every child in the world will suffer at least one infection by the time they are three years old.

• Symptoms can occur as soon as 30 minutes after exposure to the culprit organism or toxin. Anton Brand/Shutterstock

Norovirus is the leading cause of gastroenteritis in adults. Norovirus is highly contagious and outbreaks commonly occur in residential care facilities and hospitals. Patients can remain contagious for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have disappeared. Escherichia coli (e. coli), Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter are common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis. They are often found in contaminated foods including raw or undercooked meat, poultry, seafood and unpasteurised milk. Bacterial gastroenteritis accounts for 80% of cases of traveller’s diarrhoea and is thought to affect 20% to 50% of international travellers. Some parasites such as Giardia lamblia, entamoeba histolytica and cryptosporidium are known to cause gastroenteritis. Although usually parasitic gastroenteritis resolves without treatment, people with compromised immune systems can have

Astrology Aries - March 21 - April 20 You begin the new year on a high note, feeling good about yourself and the life, in general. Motivated and firing all guns to accomplish your goals, you shall quickly start off to complete all your tasks and deal with all the challenges. The things may be pretty hectic at this time, making you feel that there is no time to be wasted. Along with the work, you shall also be working hard to get rid of the clutter and the unwanted stuff. Obstacles and hurdles shall not be able to hold you back now. Organising and streamlining your working methods, you shall be in top shape workwise. However, in the personal realm, you shall need to be little careful. Be tactful while dealing with your spouse or beloved, this month, advises Ganesha. Even though, there may be a plenty of professional obligations, bogging you down with a load of work, you must keep your social and personal life alive. Take out some time for socialising with your old friends. When you take the necessary break and attend a party, you shall feel refreshed, which shall help you to handle your work better. Taurus - April 21 - May 22 As the month begins, you shall have a positive mindset, which shall help you grab any opportunity, as soon as it strikes. This is a very nice way to be and work, commends Ganesha. Despite facing some disappointments, you shall remain focused on your goals, because of an unfailing desire to succeed. In the month ahead, your personal relationships too shall improve, lifting your spirits even higher. This, in turn, shall help you focus entirely on your most important tasks, at hand. At the work front, you shall be geared up to give your one hundred percent to achieve your work targets, way before the deadlines, thereby beating the set expectations. Your superiors may notice your good performance, and might reward you with a better position or an enhanced job role. In all likelihood, your hard work shall bring immediate career advancement for you. Gemini - May 23 - Jun 21 he new year begins on a good note for you, bringing you good luck and neutralising the hard experiences, you may have faced in the last one year. To a great extent, you shall enjoy this mode of recovering and realigning. As the month begins, the ruler of your Sign - Mercury, will change Signs, which indicates that you should carefully examine all aspects before taking an important decision, especially the ones concerning your personal life and finances. However, there is a major likelihood of you relocating or travelling to a new place, in the second half of the month. Or, you may have already done that recently, and may now be settling down. Even if that is the case, in the second half of the month, you may still end up travelling for one or the other

prolonged symptoms. Prevention and treatment The use of clean water and good sanitation practices are important for reducing rates of infectious gastroenteritis. Handwashing with soap has been shown to reduce the risk of gastroenteritis by up to 47%. Of course, avoiding contaminated foods that could harbour toxic bacteria and parasites is also important. Vaccinations are also effective, particularly for rotavirus. The rotavirus vaccines have seen a marked decline in the rate and severity of disease in both developing and developed countries. Oral rehydration is the cornerstone of treatment for those suffering from mild to moderate dehydration. This can be achieved through a solution containing water, salts and sugar. For severe cases of dehydration, hospitalisation and intravenous fluids may be required. Antibiotics are generally not recommended unless the gastroenteritis is bacterial or parasitic and symptoms are severe. Longer-term illnesses What if the symptoms of gastroenteritis still persist months or even years into the future? Mounting evidence links bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections with an increased risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome. One study followed patients that developed acute gastroenteritis during a large outbreak in 2000. The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome at three years was very high at 28.3%. Eight years after the outbreak it was still high at 15.4%. The intestinal barrier allows key nutrients to enter the gut while maintaining a defence against toxins and noxious organisms. This

barrier however can be damaged in acute infectious gastroenteritis. Foreign substances can then enter the deeper tissues of the gut and promote inflammation. Handwashing with soap reduces the risk of gastroenteritis by almost 50%. A study examining patients who had gastroenteritis caused by Shigella found that there were increased mast cell numbers in the gut. Mast cells are known to secrete the hormone serotonin which is important for signalling in the enteric nervous system. This then may be another mechanism by which post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome can develop. Researchers have also studied what happens, at a cellular level, in the gut after acute gastroenteritis. Interstitial cells of Cajal are known as the pacemaker cells of the gut and help digest food and move it through the gut. These cells were altered in mice that were exposed to a type of bacterial gastroenteritis. Unanswered questions We have a reasonably good understanding of the causes of infectious gastroenteritis and treatment. But there’s more we need to learn, especially when it comes to understanding how symptoms might persist over the long term. We are learning to appreciate the significance of a disordered immune system for long-term gastrointestinal symptoms. This opens the possibility for selective use of anti-inflammatory drugs or immune-modifying medications in patients recovering from infectious gastroenteritis. www.ganeshaspeaks.com reasons. In all probability, businessmen shall get very encouraging results from their business trips. Cancer - June 22 - July 22 This month, you shall work with all your might, putting your heart and soul into your work, which may give you enormous success in your professional life. On the flip side, you may face certain difficult moments in your domestic life. It does not mean that you have not been trying to give your due attention to your household chores, but the stars may simply be not in your favour on the domestic front. Or, let's say, you may be so occupied in your work sphere that you may really not get much of chance and time at home. Nonetheless, Ganesha advises you to give special attention and care towards nurturing your personal relations, especially with your spouse. In case, you fail to give your undivided attention to your spouse or fail to handle a special relationship wisely and tactfully – then, certain long standing issues may lead to major issues. If you already have been going through a tumultuous time at personal level, a relationship break up is also likely. However, don't rush or get scared. Stars and these matters may not remain dull throughout the month. Leo - July 23 - August 22 The month and the year begin on a busy note. At the work front, you look set to remain under tremendous work pressure to complete various tasks, maybe well before their deadlines. You may feel stressed out at times, which may affect your health. Thus, you need to take good care of your health, advises Ganesha. Some unexpected expenses are likely, so you need to stay prepared to tackle them with due care. However, refrain from taking any type of loans and spend wisely. To be efficient and productive in your work, you need to take regular breaks. You should also focus on a particular task at a given point of time to ensure you don't digress and waste time unnecessarily. Refrain from doing multiple tasks at the same time. Virgo - August 23 - October 22 As the new year unfolds, many matters may turn out differently than you may have expected or planned. Nonetheless, you need to keep your focus on your work and continue putting your hundred percent for completing any work at hand - in the best possible way you feel and deem right. Do not hesitate in taking professional or expert guidance, though. Ganesha also advises you to remain positive, and try to look at the brighter side of all the issues. Refrain from giving too much importance and wasting time behind small obstacles. Good opportunities shall come your way, provided you keep your eyes and ears open, points Ganesha. At the domestic front, you may face some tough time. You might even now

desire to work for extended hours at your office, so that you can remain away from any unwanted confrontation with your family members. However, if you don't provide your family members enough room, and fail to respect their view points, you are unlikely to get much recognition among your loved ones, says Ganesha. Libra - September 23 - October 22 As the new year begins, change shall be the name of the game for you. The stars shall be in your favour for creating situations conducive for you. As per Ganesha's view, the change that you are looking for shall not happen soon, though. This may cause you some bit of frustration. Relax and please stop being so pushy and hasty – for your own good. What you need to do is plan and make definite strategies for the major part of the month. Once you have a ready plan with you, wait for an opportune time to implement it. While you wait in anticipation of a change, you may get hold of a change in your current work profile that will be a rewarding experience in itself, which shall enhance your skills further. Your new developed skills shall help you greatly when the opportunity strikes. Scorpio - October 23 - November 21 The new year looks very promising for you, as lots of growth opportunities are foreseen in your Chart, which shall fetch you good monetary gains. You shall not be required to chase success, but it will be other way round, which means success will tend to follow you wherever you go. Nonetheless, you shall have to input little of your hard work to get a real hold of the opportune times and the overall success. To increase your earnings substantially, you shall be inclined to explore new opportunities. If you desire, you may invest your money to buy property. If you want to take up a promising new job, go ahead, as the time is favourable. As your finances get stronger, you shall be inclined to spend more on creature comforts and luxuries. However, you need to control your extravagant spending; instead you need to save more to become financially stable, which may be needed for the latter part of the year. Sagittarius - November 22 - December 22 As the month begins, you shall introspect and may turn spiritual to find answers to some of your problems, which may have been annoying you for quite some time now. You shall ignore what your mind conveys; instead you shall listen to your heart. You shall take speedy decisions concerning practical matters. The steps you take now shall give you positive outcomes later on, which shall help you climb the success ladder. Moreover, your positive mindset shall help you look at some of the contentious matters in their right perspective. Due to your personal life problems, however, you may remain greatly troubled,

which shall have a direct affect on your work. Around this time, especially when you are stressed out, refrain from taking any major decision concerning your future prospects to avoid getting into trouble of any kind. Capricorn - December 23 - January 30 With the Moon positioned in Cancer, the seventh House from your Sign, you may continue to remain temperamental and moody in your relationships, marriage and partnership issues. There may be some stress arising out of this on your domestic front. Also, ones involved in partnership businesses shall have a chance of getting into stronger associations and tie-ups. But, here too, a lot of care and control shall be needed. Back in the personal realm, the married couples may encounter several issues, which will need to be handled tactfully and with great care. Professionals too shall witness tough times at their work places, and this shall be precisely due to the influence of Rahu and Ketu in these areas. Aquarius - January 21 - February 19 The new year's beginning may bring several new opportunities as well as challenges for you. At the personal front, you shall have to work hard to make your relationship work for you. When interacting with your spouse, first listen attentively to what your spouse has to say; and, then after you may put across your viewpoint in a convincing manner. If enough care is not taken, misunderstandings can easily creep in which may deteriorate your relationship, says Ganesha. Nonetheless, matters shall be manageable at any given point of time, and as the month advances, matters shall start getting a lot better. At the work front, you shall have sufficient growth opportunities, and certainly this will keep you quite enthused and active. Just reject your thought patterns that might force you to change your current job; rather focus on your present job, and try to do justice to it. And, the rewards shall be equally good, feels Ganesha. Pisces - February 20 - March 20 As the new year begins, you shall be all charged up, full of new vigour and energy, vying to start afresh. Nonetheless, refrain from implementing any of your new ideas right away, concerning your personal or professional life. Rather, you should wait for an opportune time to take action upon. The time, however, will not be favourable for taking action on the most important or pressing matters at your hand. The strategy of wait and watch is what you shall need to adopt right now. Married ones may find the going a bit tough at this time. It may happen that your spouse may act indifferently towards you, or may not give due attention to your needs. In all likelihood, this may hurt you, which may further adversely affect your work.

TO be able to forecast what we can expect in 2015, we need to take a close look at the current state of the economy and property market and analyse where we are in the real estate cycle. The economy is growing but as not as fast as many would like. To counter-act a sluggish economy, the good news for property owners or would be property purchasers is that interest rates will continue to stay low in 2015. Some forecasters are even predicting that interest rates will drop further! So far as real estate cycles are concerned, the majority of the country is an upswing. Melbourne and Sydney had a great 2014 and I can see prices increasing in these two cities in 2015 but property price growth in these two cities won’t be as good as 2014. The rest of the country can look forward to a year which will be even better than 2014. Sellers If you’re planning on selling a property in 2015, it could be a good year for you. Firstly, the number of properties for sale is relatively low which puts upward pressure on the prices of properties that are for sale. Secondly, consider selling your property later in the year as property prices should be higher at the end of 2015 than at the beginning of the year. Finally, don’t get greedy. You will often receive your best offer in the first few weeks. If the offer is within your acceptable range, take it. Buyers With limited property for sale, there is heightened competition for the properties that are on the market. You can expect

many prospective purchasers at home opens and auctions. If you want to secure a property in 2015, I would encourage you to plan and prepare yourself. Go and see your bank and/or broker before you start looking for property so that you have an idea of how much you can borrow so that you can bid or make an offer with confidence. If you need to sell an existing property, either sell it first or put it on the market before you start looking at other properties as an offer subject to selling your own home is not an attractive offer to the vendor. Investors The best news for investors is that interest rates will stay low in 2015 (or possibly fall further). If you haven’t fixed part or all of your mortgage on your investment property, you should seriously consider it. Three year (and even some five year) fixed rates are below some current variable rates. If you plan to hold onto your investment property for a while, speak to your bank and/or broker about this. Renters If you are going to be looking for a property to rent at the beginning of the year, join the queue. The rental market is at its hottest from mid-January to late February so make sure your application stands out from the rest of the crowd. Have all your paper work such as references, photo ID and employment details ready to give to the property manager/landlord at the first home open. Once the rental market settles down from March, we can expect rents and vacancy rates to remain steady which is good news for renters.

How we saved the deposit for our first home...

Real Estate News

By Gagan Tandon - 0425 158 280

NO STAG W E3 SE LA L L ND IN G

ONE of the benefits of working in the financial industry was that I was very well aware of the process of buying residential property. It has been some time that we were renting a unit and we now wanted to buy our first home. To do so we needed a home loan. I knew that borrowing 100% funds for a residential property will be expensive than usual. Hence there was a need for us (I and my wife) to save up much needed deposit. So far, we had very little in savings and considering our expenses, saving a deposit seemed like a tough challenge. We did some brainstorming and worked out a little strategy. Here are some little tricks which worked for us and I think may help you too. It is important to set your goal first. We had good understanding of the type of house we needed and our maximum price range. Based on that, we calculated required deposit amount we had to save. Usually 5-10% deposit is minimal bank requirement however Mortgage broker or a home lending professional can assist you find out your deposit requirements. Budgeting, well we all are smart and most of us have some budgeting plan however spending 30mins to work out your budget on a piece of paper makes a big difference. This helped us to work out actual surplus left after all our expenses. Also as expected,

we picked on our unnecessary spending. Timeframe, based on required deposit and our surplus figure from budgeting calculation we could work out the time it would take us to reach our goal. And we found that savings on this rate will take us many years. As a result we had to cut back on some the avoidable expense if we wanted to reach our target in time. We for all our major expenses categories. E.g. rent, household/groceries, Insurance, transport etc. This was helpful in sticking to

our expenses limit that we calculated in the budgeting exercise done at the start. We allocated exact spending money to each account and decided to use cash instead of credit / bank card. When you use cash, you only have allocated amount in your pocket to spend on a particular expense item compared to using credit/bank card where you have easy access to more funds. This helped us avoid going over the mark. Sticking to the budget was the key and we followed it to the last dollar.

We mutually agreed to give one of us the responsibility to spend money to buy daily household items from the shops. Other person will not spend any money until it was an emergency. This helped us to avoid impulse buying, manage spending money and cut on unnecessary/impulse buying. We also shopped around to get best pricing on ongoing basic amenities (Power, Internet, mobile etc.). Any money saved here went towards our savings. We divided our deposit saving goal into small saving goals, e.g. $50,000 savings goal was divided into 10 x $5,000 goals. Every time we hit 5k in savings account, we will transfer the 5k to a term deposit that had expiry term aligned to our timeframe. Putting the funds in the term deposit took away the easy access to the funds until we reached our target. We were surprised that following such easy measures helped us secure a deposit in less than actual allocated timeframe. I am sure if you are there ready to save up a deposit for your next house these little tricks may help you too. Dera Sacha Sauda chief's film 'The Messenger of God' denied certification EVER since the promo of Dera Sacha Sauda chief's film, 'MSGThe Messenger of God' hit youtube, it has been surrounded by controversies. And as per the latest reports, the film has been denied certification by the Central Board of Film Certification. As per reports, CBFC has objected to the portrayal of DeraSachaSauda chief as 'God'. CBFC has also objected to the miracles that are shown in the movie. However, as per the spokesperson of MSG, the basic plot of the film is the fight against evil. The Greek god of Hindi films needs no introduction. He has captivated us with his looks, is arguably the best dancer in Bollywood and backs his charm with good acting. It's Hrithik Roshan we are talking about. On his birthday (January 10), HT lists out some of his best performances. Koi Mil Gaya Arguably his best performance so far, Hrithik Roshan's plays a mentally challenged young man in this film. With childlike innocence and mannerisms, this is certainly among the very best. As a man-child struggling with his daily life, Hrithik breathes vulnerability and strength in equal measure to come up with a wonderful performance. The film's innocent fun is its tour de force and Hrithik revels in it as its central pillar. Lakshya

Jodha Akbar

A historical romance, the film was far removed from contemporary culture with clothes, get-up and mannerisms of a world gone by. It wouldn't have made its way to the box office had it not been for the honesty Hrithik Roshan brought to his portrayal of Emperor Akbar. His crackling chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan too would become the talking point of the film. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Ask an army man about Bollywood's representation of the armed forces and watch him smirk in disdain. Barring an odd Haqeeqat, Hindi films fail badly in weaving credible tales of the armed forces. Not Lakshya. Painstakingly researched, authentically shown, Hrithik Roshan's Lakshya is a very solid film. And undoubtedly Hrithik's act, first, as a man struggling to find his moorings, and then, the determination and moral ambivalence of the character are very well brought out.

Kaho Naa Pyar Hai A romantic hero who could dance like a dream - well, that phenomenon happened with the release of Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, Rakesh Roshan's launch pad for his son, Hrithik. The film was a smash hit with girls swooning over his gorgeous looks even as he danced his way to people's hearts.

www.indiantimes.com.au

As a banker in tearing a hurry to mint money who ends up discovering love, friendship and more, Hrithik Roshan was effortlessly convincing in Zoya Akhtar's bromance. Bollywood got yet another gorgeous looking pair with Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, which would again get repeated in Bang Bang. Agneepath Reprising a role made legendary by Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan brought his own special touch to the angst of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. His longing for his mother's affection, his raging desire to avenge his father's death and his ultimate nihilism at the end ensured that people were hooked onto the tale throughout. Bollywood & Entertainment Promotions a necessity now: Big B Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is currently busy promoting his forthcoming film Shamitabh, believes promotions are a must now. “Promotions deprive you of your self consciousness. It does not give you a chance to be so ... much as we may like to be obsessed with the temperament. It is a necessity now, a must, a budgeted must and so we do it," the 72-year-old posted on his official blog srbachchan.tumblr.com. He further added: “I wonder often who really is the true benefactor of these promotions ... for if the film is weak and disliked by the audience, surely any amount of glorification pre or post would not ever enhance the box office. Would it?” Nevertheless, he still does everything to glorify his forthcoming films. “Here we are ... artists of a different generation a different league, a different age, succumbing to the lured charm of a million interviews, appearances and presence on reality shows, trying as best we could what may be the right equation to get everyone in the entire universe to come and see our film," he wrote. Amitabh, who will also be seen in films like “Wazir” and “Piku” this year, says there were hardly any promotions required

PK: Simplicity in his complex quest

earlier. “My colleagues of yore have shown no interest in these shenanigans, and they may be right. It was never needed in their times and so why now ... but ... I guess my category has been through a drastic change and therefore it compels me to do what I never did before and do what I am required to do now," he shared. “So ... apart from some of these appearances on shows and ceremonies, there is this trip to out stations ... Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore all in the realm of 'perhaps'," he added. HT

Divya Dutta: Badlapur my first dark film ACTRESS Divya Dutta says she is excited about her first dark film 'Badlapur' and has truly enjoyed working in the actionthriller. The film also features Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. "I think I am working first time with everybody actually, right from director Sriram Raghavan, to Varun (Dhawan), to Nawaz (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a different film. It's my first dark film, yet very entertaining," said Divya at the sidelines of

and TOI

the Renault Star Guild Awards 2015 function on Sunday 11 January. "Every character has many layers. It's interesting as an actor to find different layers in yourself and in the other actors. The energy on the sets was awesome. And Varun, I think, is going to be fantastic in the film," she added. 'Badlapur', which is all set for release Feb 20, also stars Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam Vinay Pathak in key roles.

Review by Chandni Gupta PK is a beautiful story of one being and his quest for one answer as he journeys through the labyrinth of societal stereotypes and often non-questionable norms. Who is he? What is he looking for? Unlike other reviews, this one is not a spoiler-alert as I’m not going to give away the story. The brilliance of this movie is the audiences’ discovery through PK’s eyes. Free your mind and completely surrender to the story – it’s the best way to enjoy this masterpiece. Writer and Director, Rajkumar Hirani, has once again brought a simple story with a deeper message. His stories are always a catalyst for societal discussion, and PK is no different. Of course, it is Aamir Khan’s performance that takes your breath away. Not because it is the awesome Aamir Khan, but because for those two hours and forty minutes, you forget

that he is this enigmatic superstar and just embrace him as PK, as if he is and has always been PK. Supporting cast Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani and Sanjay Dutt have all also delivered their roles amicably, adding further to the fervour behind PK’s adventure. Apart from the moral message, humour in this movie makes PK’s journey just that more colourful. The hilarity behind taking action or responding to situations (even rhetorical scenarios) in a literal style is delivered perfectly by Aamir Khan. While the characters and the cinematography are at par with Rajkumar Hirani’s previous movies, the music is probably not something you’re going to have at the top of your playlist. Although it is beautifully interspersed throughout the movie and songs like Love is a waste of time are fabulously whimsical, it’s not quite the feet-tapping album. However, the movie plays to its strengths and incorporates the music as more of a background score rather than individual featurettes. Overall, this is a movie not to be missed. Entertaining yet thought-provoking; the message behind the movie is one that will stay in your heart well after the closing credits. Rating: * * * *

"I have never demanded anything to ensure that I stay because I have never had any intention of leaving," he told Barca TV after Sunday's match. "I have heard it said that my dad has spoken to Chelsea or Manchester City. It is all lies. "I have taken this chance to deny it so that everyone knows the truth." Messi had missed training on Monday, citing a stomach bug, after being left on the bench by Enrique for the 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad. And he sent the rumour mill into overdrive later in the day by following Chelsea and two of their players Thibaut Courtois and Filipe Luis on social media site Instagram. Sources in the Catalan press then claimed Messi had met with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu in midweek to ask for the former Barca captain Enrique to be replaced as coach. "I am grateful to be able to give my version of events," he said. "It hurts me because it comes from here, from Barcelona, from people that love the club, or say they do. It doesn't come from Madrid like it has in the past. "It is not good that they look for rivalry between Luis Enrique and I because there isn't any," Messi added. "We need to be more united than ever, the fans and us. We have an important six months ahead to achieve good things for us and for the club." Any doubts over Enrique's job in the short term were blown away by arguably his side's best performance in his seven-month reign. Messi teed up Neymar to slot home the

opener after 12 minutes and then repeated the trick to allow Luis Suarez to register just his second La Liga goal. The Argentine inadvertently handed Atletico a route back into the game when deemed to have brought down Jesus Gamez inside the area on the hour mark and Mario Mandzukic slammed home from the penalty spot. Messi made amends when he slotted home the clinching goal from close range three minutes from time to move Barca back to within a point of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. "This win has a special value because it is against a direct rival for the league," Suarez said. "At the moment the self-confidence in the team is good. This win will gives us a big boost because it came against Atletico Madrid. "It is spectacular to play with Messi and Neymar, just like the rest of my teammates. We have achieved a great victory." Schumacher faces 'long fight' to recovery, says manager MICHAEL Schumacher faces a "long fight" for recovery as the first anniversary of his skiing accident approaches, the former Formula One driver's manager said on Sunday 11 January. Her comments cast doubts over a newspaper report that said he was making cognitive progress. "We need a long time. It's going to be a long time and a hard fight," Sabine Kehm told Reuters by telephone. "He is making progress appropriate to the severity of the situation," she added, reiterating a statement she made a month ago. Schumacher suffered severe head injuries in a ski accident in Meribel in the French Alps on Dec. 29 2013. He emerged from an induced coma in June, and left hospital in September. In an interview with Le Parisien, Philippe Streiff, another former F1 driver, said Schumacher "had yet to recover the power of speech" but was "nevertheless starting to recognise those close to him". Streiff, described by the newspaper as a long-time friend, said he had gleaned the information from contact with the Germanborn driver's wife, Corinne, and with his surgeon, Gerard Saillant, whom he knows as a result of his own racing accident in 1989. He said Schumacher, who will be 46 on Jan. 3, had "very limited" movement but was working on sitting upright, and that "long term... he could hope one day to walk with crutches." Kehm said Streiff was not a close friend of Schumacher and that his claims to have had contact with the two people named were "factually wrong". "I cannot confirm that (report)," she said. "I can only confirm that I do not know

where Mr. Streiff has his information from because he has no contact with us and he never has." Schumacher, who won a record 91 F1 races, left the sport last year after a disappointing three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006.

Federer notches 1,000th match win, claims Brisbane title BRISBANE: Roger Federer notched his 1,000th career victory and collected his 83rd title with a seesawing 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4 win over Milos Raonic in the Brisbane International final on Sunday night (11 January, 2015). The 17-time major winner broke Raonic's serve in the third game and again in the opening game of the second set but just when Federer appeared set for a comfortable victory, the 24-year-old Canadian broke back in the fourth game to swing the momentum. The second set then stayed on serve until the tiebreaker, where Raonic dropped the first two points before winning the last seven to level the match. After overcoming his early nerves, thirdseeded Raonic was playing a cool, composed game until he served his first doublefault of the third set, giving Federer championship point. Raonic netted a forehand on the next point, allowing Federer to join Jimmy Connors (1,253) and Ivan Lendl (1,071) as the only players to win 1,000 or more matches on the men's professional tour. After a sudden end to the match, Federer raised his arms to acknowledge the "Federer 1,000" placards and red-and-white Swiss flags being waved around the stadium. Ballboys held up 1,000 in big, white numerals near the net during the presentation ceremony, when Federer accepted the trophy from Roy Emerson and a framed montage of images with the words "Congratulations Roger, 1,000 match wins" from Australian great Rod Laver. "Special moment. I'm glad I got it," Federer said. "To get to 1,000 match wins in front of you guys ... it really means a lot to me. I'll

never forget this match." The 33-year-old Swiss star started the 2015 season with a 996-227 career win-loss record and reached the milestone with victories over Australian wildcards John Millman and James Duckworth, fourthseeded Grigor Dimitrov and Raonic, whom he now leads 8-1 in head-to-head encounters. The Aussie fans love an underdog, and backed Raonic while he was down early in the match, with Federer firing eight aces and not facing a break point in the first set. But as the final progressed and an upset loomed, the Pat Rafter Arena crowd got right behind Federer and cheered his every winner. Federer responded to his slide in the tiebreaker by serving an ace to open the third set, but he needed all his experience to save three break point chances in the opening game that lasted more than 11 minutes. Raonic then had to save two breaks points in the fourth and sixth games - after missing two on Federer's serve in the fifth. The server only conceded one point in the next three games until Raonic was serving to stay in the match. Raonic led 30-15 until Federer produced a pin-point topspin lob that forced an error, and then the doublefault - only his fourth of the match. He hit 49 winners, six more than Federer, but had also had more unforced errors and, surprisingly, fewer aces. "We all know today was a significant milestone for Roger," Raonic told the crowd, reflecting on how when he listened to all of Federer's credits in the introductions before the match he could have sworn he was aiming for his 2,000th win. "I think you need to step it up." TOI
