JUNE is here, another financial year come to a close, this one seems to have come around very quickly. For many this financial year has been a tough one, with the global financial cri- Umesh Chandra sis, turmoil in Europe and the world wide natural disasters. The share market still faces challenges with a huge decline in the indexes; Real Estate market has been stagnant for a long time, though the last quarter has seen an increase in the number of transactions. Reserve Bank of Australia is talking about another cut to interest rate; this will be welcomed by the industry and may assist in regaining consumer confidence. The whole money cycle has stopped; the financial sector has become over cautious with their lending as the values of their secured assets fell below that of the loan advanced. The valuers have sharpened their pencil, this where the problem initiated the valuations were coming in quite high following an upward trend evident in those prevailing market conditions. During May I had the opportunity of participating in the World religious peace and harmony conference in Bangkok, the above mentioned topics were discussed at the forum. I attended as a guest in my capacity as Hindu Chaplain of the Multifaith Centre of University of Queensland together with three other Chaplains. I was very impressed with the arrangements and the whole organisation. There were some very good, well versed presenters representing various faiths, please refer to the main article for full details. May has been the month of Carnivals, The

I REFER to an article by Thakur Ranjit Singh published in your last issue Volume 9 no 8 of May 12, 2012 entitled “The stolen history of Indo-Fijian Girmityas” which cannot go unchallenged. In a very strongly worded statement he has made reference to Indo-Fijian community settled in Brisbane where he claims, I quote “It is unfortunate that even Fiji’s people settled overseas like in Sacramento, Brisbane, Vancouver, San Francisco and my Auckland have been so immersed in their new found prosperity that any thought of Girmityas or Girmit was considered blasphemy, scratching of old wounds and digging of historical graves. Some six years ago I hoped to mark Girmit Day on May 14 in Auckland, but was shunned by the descendants of Girmitiyas. What a shame. Even a temple, supported and frequented by Indo-Fijians in Manurewa in South Auckland with an appropriate hall refused to grant us free use as they had to pay a mortgage for their loan. How about the mortgage that we owe to the sacrifices and sufferings of Girmitiyas that have landed us in this prosperity now? Can Indo-Fijians settled abroad be so thankless, conceited, selfish and forgetful.” He further goes on to say in his harangue, “While Indo-Fijians in Wellington, Melbourne and Auckland will mark this day, one wonders what the descendents of Girmityas in other parts of the world including Brisbane, Sacramento, San Francisco, Vancouver and even in Fiji will to do remember this day.” As an Indo- Fijian, I take exception to the fact that such unwarranted and unethical remarks about us living in Brisbane is most uncalled for. Racecourse Road Carnival, The Wilston Carnival, Zillmere Festival and the Racing carnival. Rain seemed to have dampened the spirits of a few events; such is the risk of any outdoor event. Last year GOPIO’s India day Fair saw a bit of rain, talking about India Day Fair, this year’s event will be held on 12th August at the same venue, the amphitheatre of Roma Street Parklands. President Shyam Das and his committee are working hard on this year’s India Day Fair, celebrating Indian Independence day and showcasing Indian culture, through Music, Dance, Acts, Food and Clothing. Brisbane Indian Times is proudly supporting the event by way of free design and promotion. I hope you have participated in the Queensland week activities, many functions including the citizenship ceremony, open day at Government House, Queensland Week Awards and many other functions marked Queensland week, it was good to see our community getting somewhat involved. I travel a lot, and one of the greatest feelings is getting back. Queensland is a great state and we should all be very proud of it. Events like ANZAC day, Harmony Day and Queensland week needs our community involvement as we assimilate into the wider Australian fabric and embrace true multiculturalism. This years is also Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and to mark the significant event we have a public holiday, in London big celebrations are taking place, Bollywood is playing a key role in the entertainment along side all others. May I take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers, readers, distributors and correspondents for their continued support and loyalty!

readers please read an article on the same page of Brisbane Indian Times headed, “Girmit Night, a huge success-in spite of heavy rain.” What a contradiction to what the Thakurji has to say? I further wish to state that to my knowledge the first ever Girmit Night in Brisbane was celebrated in 1988 during the Expo at South Brisbane. I also remember some 12 years ago Fiji Australia Club in collaboration with Fiji International Congress held this night where my two daughters spoke on the “Girmityas” for two consecutive years to an audience of over 500 people. The year 2012 marks the 10th year of “Girmit” celebration through speeches, cultural items, poetry in Hindi and a musical night to raise funds for the poor students in Fiji. The funds raised has reached almost 1 million dollar mark by the International Congress of Fiji ably led by its President, Dr Krishna Prasad and supported by such stalwarts as Sarat Maharaj and Rajendra Prakash. What Thakur Ranjit Singh says is far from the truth and we have to set the records right for him. When I informed him of this by email his reply was, “This is news to me that you mark Girmit there. Can you please send me photos and your programme of how and where you marked the day.” Some people enjoy their “Kumbhkaran” sleep, and he seems to be one of them. His credentials read “He is a media commentator for ethnic newspapers in Brisbane……” Please do not fool the Indo-Fijians with your untrue stories. They should be congratulated for their hard work and efforts for what they are doing. Shahban Ali, Eight Mile Plains QLD.

That’s all from me this month until next Month Happy Reading Umesh Chandra

Recent news about Australian Migration Regulations Changes to the Business Skills Visa Program FROM 1 July 2012, the Business Skills Program will be replaced with a new model of visas titled “Business Innovation and Investment Program”. The Business Skills program went through a significant review in 2011 and these changes have been recommended.

The reforms include the following key changes:

* reducing the number of visa subclasses from 13 to three by: * integrating the new Business Innovation and Investment visas with the skilled migrant selection model, SkillSelect, which will be launched on 1 July 2012 * facilitating entry of entrepreneurs that have sourced venture capital funding in Australia * introducing an innovation “points test” for provisional visa applicants * granting access to flexibility provisions to achieve permanent residence and encourage innovative business * increasing asset thresholds to better align with the Australian business community * changing key visa criteria to improve the integrity of the program. DIAC will also be creating a new visa pathway to provide for significant migrant investment into Australia. This initiative is expected to be implemented in the 2012-13 program year.

The new program will be made up of three visa subclasses:

* Business Talent (Permanent) (subclass 132) * Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (subclass 188) * Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) (subclass 888) Business Talent (subclass 132) visa

Under the new program applicants must submit an expression of interest in SkillSelect. The Business Talent visa will be a state or territory nominated permanent visa with two streams and: * significant business history stream * venture capital entrepreneur stream. The significant business history stream is applicable for high-calibre business owners or part owners of a business who have a genuine and realistic commitment to manage a new or existing business in Australia. The requirements of this stream will remain the same as the existing Business Talent visa. The venture capital entrepreneur stream is intended to facilitate the entry of migrant entrepreneurs with a high-potential business idea. Migrant entrepreneurs must have sourced at least AUD1 million in venture capital funding through a member of the Australian Venture Capital Association Limited. Australian Venture Capital Association Limited is the leading industry association that represents and promotes the long-term interests of the private equity and venture capital industries in Australia. The funding should be provided for early phase start-up, product commercialisation, or business development and expansion.

Provisional Business Innovation and Investment (subclass 188) visa

The provisional Business Innovation and Investment visa will be a state or territory nominated provisional visa with no minimum English requirement. It will comprise of two streams: (a) business innovation stream and (b) investor stream. Applicants will be required to submit an expression of interest in the SkillSelect model.

Applicants must be less than 55 years old or the nominating state or territory must provide their support to waive the age requirement. Applicants must also meet business and investment requirements and also pass an innovation point’s test pass mark of 65. (Please refer to page 6 for chart)

Permanent Business Innovation and Investment (subclass 888) visa

The permanent Business Innovation and Investment visa will be a state or territory nominated visa that is not points tested. Applicants will need to hold the provisional Business Innovation and Investment Visa. It comprises two streams (1) business and innovation stream and (2) investor stream. Applicants will need to meet eligibility criteria and also meet the specific business metrics or investment requirements of the stream for which they are applying. Asset thresholds have been increased in the program. The department has acknowledged the cost and capital risk associated with establishing a new business and has raised thresholds to be roughly consistent with an indexed median level of assets for Australian business owners.

This visa also introduces the following criteria to improve the integrity of the program:

* An applicant’s ownership interest in their main business or main businesses must not have been acquired from a person who was an applicant for, or holder of, a Business Innovation or Investment (Permanent) (subclass 888) visa, unless the current applicant and that other person had a joint interest in the main business for at least 12 months before the application was made. Recent news about Australian Migration Regulations Continued from page 4 * The primary applicant for the permanent Business Innovation and Investment visa must have met the primary criteria for the grant of their provisional Business Innovation and Investment visa. This complements the adjustments to the provisional visa, particularly the introduction of the innovation points test. The new measure will protect the integrity of that objective by requiring the primary applicant to make a genuine commitment to the new business in Australia. Certain exceptions can apply to this criterion. Introducing regulations requiring an applicant to comply with Australian laws applicable to business and taxation. These measures are designed to ensure compliance with Australian workplace laws including award rates of pay, superannuation obligations and worker health and safety. Significant investor stream (to be implemented 2012-2013) The Significant Investor Stream will be a stream of both the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (subclass 188) visa and the Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) (subclass 888) visa. Applicants for this visa must:  submit an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect  be nominated by a state or territory government

 make an investment of at least AUD5 million into state or territory government bonds, Australian Securities and Investment Commission regulated managed funds with a mandate for investing in Australia and/or direct investment into Australian companies  meet a lower residence requirement while on the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (subclass 188) visa. The investment must be held in the name of the applicant, or their spouse or de facto partner. The investment cannot be held in superannuation. Further details on the Significant Investor visa stream will be available closer to the date of implementation. 2012-2013 Budget Overview: Australia's Migration Program The following is a summary of the main changes to to the Migration Budget announced on 8 May 2013. Increased Employer Sanctions * Certain employer sanctions, including employers who employ a non-citizen who does not have work rights, or undertake actions that would cause a person to breach their visa conditions.

* The sanctions will vary from warning and infringement notices with financial penalties to civil penalties and criminal prosecution for the most serious breaches. * An increased awareness and education campaign for employers and improvements to the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) service Permanent Employer Sponsored Program * $1.3 million over two years will be allocated to improve the Permanent Employer Sponsored Program Virtual English Tuition for Migrants * $5.0 million over three years has been budgeted to pilot virtual English tuition via the National Broadband Network (NBN) to support new migrants living in regional Australia with a distance learning package * This trial will have two phases. Post-election Council meeting builds on successful formula CUSTOMER service and community engagement were given a boost at the postelection meeting of Ipswich City Council on 11 May, 2012. The successful formula of eleven Standing Committees was also endorsed and follows a similar structure to the most recent term of council. During the meeting Cr Victor Attwood was elected Deputy Mayor for a third term. Mayor Paul Pisasale (pictured) said that all councillors had input into the updated structure. “The new committees are based on community feedback, the changing demands for council services and increasing community expectations. “On behalf of all councillors I want to thank the community. We won’t let you down. Residents voted for experience and we now have one of the most experienced teams of councillors in Australia.

6 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, June, 2012

“All sitting councillors were re-elected, and we welcome Cr Bruce Casos representing Division 4, who will be chairperson of the newly named Community and Customer Service committee.” The meeting also confirmed Cr Victor Attwood as chairperson of City Management and Finance committee. In his role as Deputy Mayor Cr Attwood will also assist with implementation of the Flood Commission recommendations. Cr Pisasale said other changes included Cr

Cheryl Bromage moving to chair City Infrastructure and Cr Heather Morrow taking charge of Environment and Conservation. “The team has renewed their commitment to serve the city with the same level of passion and enthusiasm for building a better Ipswich. “This means the city will continue to power ahead without undue delays or interruptions to council programs. “In particular, the commitment to the revitalisation of Ipswich Central remains a priority.

www.indiantimes.com.au

“It is no longer a dream, the first crane on the ICON Ipswich site is there for all to see. “The city is in a much stronger position than our predecessors and as a council we will preserve the heritage and culture that not only gives us our unique character, but our heart and soul. “We have 10 Councillors and a Mayor with a combined experience of more than 160 years in local government. “We are also fortunate that Ipswich City Council has a great depth of experience in the CEO and staff,” Cr Pisasale said. The new Standing Committees and Chairpersons: * Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee - Cr David Morrison * Environment and Conservation Committee - Cr Heather Morrow * City Infrastructure Committee - Cr Cheryl Bromage * Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee - Cr Charlie Pisasale * Youth and Seniors Committee - Cr Sheila Ireland * Health and Community Safety Committee - Cr Andrew Antoniolli * Planning and Development Committee - Cr Paul Tully * Economic Development and Sustainability Committee - Mayor, Cr Paul Pisasale * Tourism and Libraries Committee - Cr David Pahlke * Community and Customer Service Committee - Cr Bruce Casos * City Management and Finance Committee - Cr Victor Attwood “The changes to some committee names and responsibilities were a reflection of where we are heading as a city.” Cr Pisasale said the city was in a very sound financial position. “In the last term of council we were able to achieve record spending on capital works without a corresponding rise in rates.” “The new committee structure has also been about matching the experience and knowledge of councillors with their respective roles. “This is clearly demonstrated with Cr Paul Tully continuing his chairmanship of Planning and Development, Cr Charlie Pisasale with Arts, Community and Cultural Services, Cr David Morrison with Parks, Sport and Recreation, Cr Sheila Ireland stays head of Youth and Seniors, and Cr Andrew Antoniolli retains the newly named Heath and Community Safety committee.” The Mayor said he would continue to chair the Economic Development and Sustainability Committee as he believes the most important legacy he can leave is jobs. Taxi Talk...

Maxi-Taxi drivers defence fund appeal

Stars descend on Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert

Since many Indians and other migrant communities are actively involved in the Taxi business in Australia, the following article will be of some interest to those in Brisbane who have anything to do with the Taxi Industry. IT is reported that an Indian Maxi-taxi driver has been charged for causing grievous Shahban Ali bodily harm and dangerous driving for allegedly killing a youth and seriously injuring another one. The “Oz Cabbie” magazine Issue 4 May 2012 reports on page 7 “In a remarkable show of solidarity, taxi operators, drivers and networks have come together to support the defence of a Black and White maxi driver who, after his taxi was attacked by a mob of youths, accidentally ran two of them down as he was fleeing his attackers, killing one and seriously injuring the other. So far Queensland Taxi Advisers Inc. has secured the services of a high profile Brisbane barrister to defend the driver.” The driver is a 29 year old student who has recently completed his degree in Accounting. The incident happened on the fateful night of 5 May 2012 at about 12.45 am. It is alleged that a maxi taxi was called to a street address in Narangba where a party was going on. It is also alleged that a violent and drunken mob of youths attacked his taxi causing severe damage. Allegedly the driver panicked and ran for his life but hit two youths who came in his way and were seriously injured. One of them died later. He reported the incident to the police who had already been informed about the behaviour of the drunken youths. The Queensland Taxi Advisers Inc. and Queensland Taxi Owners and Driver’s Welfare Association Inc. have launched an appeal to raise funds to finance the case which could cost thousands of dollars. Again, I quote from “Oz Cabbie” Issue 4,

May, 2012 page 4 “Have Your Say” column where a Sydney taxi driver writes “ Driver got scared, floored the pedal to escape and a couple of these animals didn’t get out of the way in time.” “Am I sorry for the two youths, their families and friends? Of course I am, but I’m more sorry for the maxi driver, who frightened and alone had to make a snap decision on how to save himself and his taxi from a violent out of control mob.” He further writes about his bitter experiences of driving at night time in Sydney, the runners and all the damage caused to his taxi. He ends his article by saying “Had someone been in front of my cab I might have killed them and in that split second I couldn’t give a damn. I just had to get away to safety. It’s called “self-defence”! I spoke to Nash Dosangh, the President of QTOADWA, and he confirmed that about $20,000 has already been collected by the drivers and other interested parties. He said much more was needed to fight the driver’s case. He also added “If this happened to one driver, it could happen to anyone anytime. The drivers are doing a service to the public, driving at night, putting their life at risk and they deserve better treatment. In the past, in many cases, the driver has been punished and the culprits go free.” This was also confirmed by an elderly “sardraji” Mohan Singh, who said “This body is a non-profit making organization, the executive committee are all volunteers working towards owners and drivers working conditions.” Anyone wishing to contribute or donate to the drivers defence fund can contact Nash Dosangh on mobile 0402 069 869 and Mohan Singh on 0412 697 741.

From front page LONDON -- Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and Annie Lennox were among the pop stars who performed at the Diamond Jubilee Concert on June 4 outside Buckingham Palace, in front of members of the royal family. Although Prince Philip missed the festivities, after being taken to the hospital due to a bladder infection, other members of the royal family cheered on the performers from a specially constructed VIP stand near Buckingham Palace. The Queen, wearing a beige jacket beneath a black coat, arrived after the concert had begun and was accompanied to her seat by her elder son, the Prince of Wales. Thousands of people waved Union flags as comedy actor Rob Brydon officially welcomed all those watching near the palace in St James's Park or at home on television. Singers Jessie J and Will.i.am performed a duet before concert organizer Gary Barlow and Cheryl Cole took to the stage for another song. Veteran singer Cliff Richard then performed a medley of his hits over the decades as a large screen backdrop showed scenes of the Queen as a young girl. Other famous faces included singer Annie Lennox -- wearing feathered angel wings - and Australia's veteran performer Rolf Harris. One of the most bizarre performances of the night came as Jamaican style queen Grace Jones performed her entire hit "Slave To the Rhythm" with a hula hoop, without it slipping. Welsh performer Sir Tom Jones, who performed his hit "Delilah," said "It is a fantastic feeling being up here tonight for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee." Sir Elton John, performing in pink jacket and glasses, thanked Her Majesty before getting the audience to their feet.

www.indiantimes.com.au

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with Prince Harry, sang along to his jazzed up rendition of "Crocodile Rock." As darkness fully descended on the palace, a video montage of footage from throughout the queen's reign was projected onto Buckingham Palace. Legendary US performer Stevie Wonder dedicated his song "Isn't She Lovely" to the Queen, before bringing American rapper will.i.am back on stage to sing "Happy Birthday." The jubilee celebration marks her 60-year reign. The band Madness performed from the top of Buckingham Palace's roof, singing their songs, "Our House and "It Must Be Love," before comedian Peter Kaye appeared on stage dressed as a Beefeater. After a performance by Sir Paul McCartney, the Queen lit the last of 4,250 beacons across Britain and the Commonwealth, to celebrate her reign. Prince Charles then led the audience in three cheers for the monarch. After the national anthem was sung by performers and audience, Prince Charles kissed his mother's hand. A final fireworks display, set to a diamond theme, was unleashed before the final beacon was lit. Source: Sky News

Generosity begins at Council of Indian Australians Inc CIA creates Benevolent Fund Courtesy Dr Balu Vijay, Secretary, Council of Indian Australians IT is a known fact that any community settling in Australia irrespective where they come from, need government & community support – be it financial or emotional, and the Indian community is not immune to it. Many migrants can vouch for their despair in times of hardship and nowhere to go for help. We, at CIA, have recognised this fact and have received a number of requests since its inception for monetary assistance from Indians for various reasons but particularly unfortunate & untimely health related issues for their visitors from India. For example, parents or relatives visiting Australia have to have an health insurance required for obtaining a visitor Visa. Many of these visitors extend their stay in Australia but inadvertently forget to extend their health insurance. Tragedy strikes for health related issue or worst case scenario is death. This can put any family under financial burden with thousands of dollars of expenses out of pocket particularly those newer migrants struggling to meet their day-today financial commitment. There are also more serious instances of requests resulting from accidental deaths where bodies have to be flown back to India, cases resulting from domestic violence etc., – all requiring financial and other forms of support. With the scenarios described above, the Executive Committee of the Council of Indian Australians, have decided to establish “CIA Benevolent Fund” in their last Executive Committee meeting. In order to ensure transparency and compliance, this fund will have a separate bank account with all transactions under this Fund audited. The funds will be allocated to genuine potential recipients under the procedures and guidelines established by the Council. The Council is committed to this important Community project and hence the Council will run various campaigns aimed at creation of awareness and generating the much needed funds. The Council urges every member of the Indian Australian community, who can afford to be generous enough to dig deep into their pockets and make this project, a proud project, that will assist the neediest in their time of desperate circumstance. For further information about this event, please visit www.cia.org.au or contact any one of the office bearers and give your suggestions.

Each year the school intakes hundreds of young refugees and immigrants, gives them the most intense semester of English possible (those evening French/Spanish classes you take pale miserably in comparison), then sends them out into school, TAFE, or work. It’s a six-month (or more) language doorway. Milpera presented a screening of the short film Room 15 in the State Library of Queensland. It was a harrowing, but uplifting snapshot of the lives of a selection of students (Hazara Afghanis, Liberians, and anyone else who was ever labelled “boatpeople”) currently enrolled, who complete the majority of their English studies in the

Sripad Tirtha Maharaja New managing committee - Brisbane visits Brisbane Malayalee Assn

Submitted by Sundar Gopal Das SRIPAD Bhaktivedanta Tirtha Maharaja, from the holy land of Vrindavan, visited Brisbane between the 10th and 17th of May and spiritual classes were held in different locations in Brisbane. Maharajaji mainly spoke from the 11th Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, especially the discussion between King Nimi and nine Yogendras. This discussion is very instructive for aspiring spiritualists as it talks about the illusory nature of this material world and how one can become free from the cycle of birth and death and attain the loving service of the Lord in the spiritual world. On the 13th of May Maharajaji was interviewed by Ram Priya Das for his radio program on Brisvaani. Below are some excerpts from that interview. Q: What activities are called bhakti (devotional service)? What is the benefit of doing bhakti? A: Bhakti is the emotion of the heart and can be expressed only by the heart. Presently we have given these emotions to this world - towards our parents, brothers and sisters, between husband and wife. Those emotions and the mood of the heart are called bhakti. If the same love is directed towards the Supreme Lord, that is called visuddha (pure) bhakti. So where are we directing our bhakti - towards the Lord or to this material world? Objects of this world are impermanent and temporary. Therefore it is stated in our scriptures, that the greatest religious principle for all human beings is to offer the emotions of the heart, in a non-duplicitous way, unto the lotus feet of the Lord. The Lord is transcendental and is beyond our senses and intelligence. Everyone has bhakti in their hearts. Some worship the Lord to get the power to hurt others, to cause violence. This is known as tamasic bhakti, bhakti in the mode of ignorance. Others go to temples and perform bhakti but they want material happiness and facilities for sense enjoyment. This is bhakti in the mode of passion, rajasic bhakti. Others worship the Lord to get liberation. This is bhakti in the mode of goodness, sattvik bhakti. These three types of bhakti are selfish bhakti. If someone offers himself unto the Lord and worships the Lord in one pointed mood with no material desires and engages in the service of the Lord, then this is pure bhakti. If a person offers his life at the lotus feet of the Lord “Oh Lord, you are mine and I am yours. I am offering this small thing. Please accept this.” Seeing his mood, the Lord accepts his offering. If someone worships the Lord in this non-duplicitous way, with no material desires, the Lord will appear in front of him and he will attain supreme peace. This is the glory and benefit of bhakti. By developing bhakti to the Lord, the nature of the person changes and his heart is filled with happiness. He develops deep love for the Lord and honours all living entities. This is the success of the human life. Q: What is saranagati (surrender)? What are the symptoms of saranagati? A: Saranagati means to offer oneself completely to the Lord with the mood “I belong to the Lord and He is mine.” The devotee accepts those things that are favourable for spiritual life. He rejects things that are unfavourable to bhakti, like sinful activities or hurting others. He does not take things that are in the mode of ignorance like meat, fish, egg or drinking alcohol. These things cannot be offered to the Lord. If one eats pure food, the mind will also become pure and is conducive in developing bhakti to the Lord. In addition, he has firm faith in the Lord and knows that the Lord is His protector and maintainer and is always with him in his heart. These are the symptoms of saranagati. So we should surrender in this way and cultivate bhakti towards the Lord. Then our life will be successful.

Paradoxes of Contemporary Pakistan By Marcela Corona THE Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS) and Griffith Asia Institute (GAI) hosted the launch of the book “Pakistan´s Stability Paradox: Domestic, Regional and International Dimensions” by His Excellency, Mr William Paterson, Australia´s Ambassador for Counter –Terrorism at the Ship Inn, Southbank Parklands, on Thursday 24 May, 2012. The book is edited by expert in India-Australia relations, Dr Ashutosh Misra, Research Fellow, CEPS, and expert in terrorism and nuclear strategy and proliferation, Dr Michael E. Clarke, Research Fellow, GAI; and it highlights Pakistan´s daunting challenges to its stability and future. “Pakistan is a crucial state of the international system and Australia’s engagement with it continues to deepen. Therefore, our objective is to launch this book in Australia to stimulate the on-going public debate and also influence foreign policy-making on Pakistan,” Dr Misra said Pakistan, with the second largest Muslim population in the world, is a crucial country in the international Security system. This is because in the nearly 11 years since 9/11, al Qaeda and its extremist allies have moved across the border to the remote areas of the Pakistani frontier. They have used this mountainous terrain as a safe haven to hide, to train terrorists, to communi-

cate with followers, to plot attacks, and to send fighters to support the insurgency in Afghanistan and other countries. Hence, analysts have over the past decade suggested that Pakistan was on the verge of state ‘failure’ or collapse resulting from a myriad of dilemmas. Yet, remarkably the Pakistani state has proven to be more resilient. This book explores this central paradox in 12 chapters from domestic, regional and international dimensions. “This book is a consequence of the largest international workshop on Pakistan in Australia organized by GAI in 2009, in which a plethora of security threats and challenges confronting Pakistan were discussed by the leading academics and research analysts from Pakistan, India, United States and Australia and senior officials from the

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Defence,” he said. The launch coincided with a public lecture on “Terrorism Changing Landscape” by Mr Paterson. He said social media is changing the way terrorist operate and could radicalize and empower socially disaffected loners, including nonMuslim extremist. “Terrorism is adaptive and resilience and its ideology continues to have resonance, reinforced by continuing instability and grievance in Muslim communities across a wide geographic area.” Mr Paterson was Australia´s Ambassador to Thailand from 2004-2008 and has extensive experience in international strategic and security Politico-military affairs and as head of DFAT´s AntiTerrorism Task Force imme-

diately after 9/11 terrorist attacks. The CEPS was established by the ARC in 2007 to boost policing and security research capacity in Australia amid the growing complexity and internationalization of transnational crime in the post 9/11 environment. CEPS is a complex research enterprise consisting of multiple collaborating researchers, and university and partner organizations and is administered by Griffith University and cooperates across four University Nodes. The book has already been widely acclaimed in India and Pakistan following its launch on 1 December 2011 in New Delhi by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Indian Member of Parliament and former UN under-secretary general. THE Committee of MCF have been very active during May. Ten cases of local people who needed urgent financial assistance were interviewed and their needs met. The third container for Fiji was packed at the Kuraby Mosque and sent off to Fiji on 2nd May and has now arrived in Lautoka. The goods have already been distributed to flood victims in Fiji who remarked on the good quality of the donations. On 6 May MCF attended the International Food Festival at the Gold Coast Mosque. Hussin Goss really had his work cut out as the auctioneer with so many goods donated for the auction, MCF also distributed collection tins to help boost the need for further funds in order to carry out its work in the local community. The stall at the Mosque also informed the community of

the functions of MCF, especially to let the Gold Coast Community know that they are there to help the needy. This festival is a great community event and opens the doors of the mosque to the general community as well as showcasing international food from Muslim countries. MCF actively supported the Islamic Community of Queensland in the Fiji Fundraising Dinner held at the Islamic School of Brisbane on 12 May. They handed over a cheque for $20,000 towards the appeal which grossed in excess of $50,000 which was sent to the Fiji Muslim League for distribution to flood victims. Hussin Goss was the auctioneer for the donated goods which boosted the funds for this cause. A charity dinner was held at Michael's Oriental restaurant on 20 May for the Palestinian Widows and Orphans by Amarah and Al Tariq. MCF committee members actively supported the fund rais-

ing appeal. Hussin Goss as auctioneer even boosted the bid of one person by donating $1000 of his own money to ensure the item sold at $3000. MCF members collected the funds and handled the transfer of money to Palestine. It must be noted that Hussin Goss was the first President of MCF and has to travel from the Gold Coast to attend events in which he agrees to be the Auctioneer. He is

a dedicated committee member over the three years MCF has been operating. Hussin has also travelled to NSW during May to be auctioneer at events. He does it voluntarily and at his own expense. Osman Rane and other committee members who accompany Osman to assess clients and fulfil their needs give up their time and meet their own costs. MCF have devoted members who are there to help the needy.

10th annual Kathak performance a huge success

NRITYA Bharati School of Kathak Dance held its 10th annual Kathak performance at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School at Corinda on 28 April, 2012. This most popular function attracted a crowd of 500 despite the inclement weather. The performers included children aged five and above and their performances were appreciated by all attended. The event was very well organised, coordinated and run to a strict timeline, the success of overall production had been the result of excellent coordination of a dedicated, capable and experienced team. Kathak is said to be one of the most prominent Indian classical dance styles in India today and derives its name from the community of musicians and dancers who are also story tellers were called Kathakars. The origin of this dance form dates back to the 17th century, when it was practiced in the temples for narrating mythological stories. Later this dance form was adopted by the Muslim rulers and was performed in the Mugal Courts. The versatility of Kathak enables this dance form to be easily adapted to most contemporary music. Her first Guru was Pundit Bihari Lal Singh and in more recent times, Dr Uma Shankar Chakraborti, who is a very close associate of Kathak’s legendry Pundit Biju Maharaj and Dr Suswati Sen. Namita completed her BA in Kathak at Lucknow University and was the recipient of an Indian National Scholarship for dance. Indian embroidery, needlework making Telstra tops network quality study Western inroads: Falguni-Shane as customers join 4G fast lane By Nivedita Sharma NEW DELHI, June 4 (IANS) If their cuts and designs brought them fame, they also earned them an impressive client list that boasts of the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. Designer duo Shane and Falguni Peacock say people in the West have an eye for Indian artwork and more desi designers are making inroads into the Western market. "Indian artwork and karigari is immensely appreciated and sought out in international markets. Our embroidery and needlework are considered rich in culture and aesthetically appealing to the western fashionistas," Shane told IANS. Added Falguni: "Chanel (the French fashion house) recently created an entire line, which were Indian-inspired designs on Western silhouettes. Our Indian designers and their sensibilities are definitely being recognised and appreciated and more Indian designers are making inroads into the western markets every day." They enjoy working with their international client whom they describe as trendsetters. "Working with international pop stars has always been exciting and fun. They are the trendsetters who know what they want and what looks good on them. It is easy to work with them and there's always something fresh and new to play around with," Falguni said. Recently Demi Lovato, one of the judges at the upcoming edition of "The X Factor", chose a bold trendy outfit made by them. Also, they styled the entire look of backdancers outfits for Madonna's Super Bowl performance. Based out of Mumbai, the husband and wife duo are known for their ultra-feminine and elegant clothes. Their inspiration is all about fusion of western cut and Indian embellishment to create a dress that appeals globally. The designer duo has created ripples in

international markets by showcasing at the London Fashion Week four years ago and participating in the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Berlin for the second time this year. The show was attended by American singer Ashanti and actress Michelle Williams, both of whom wore their outfits. And they are happy with the ways things are shaping up! "We have been showcasing at various fashion weeks like Dubai and London for a while now. Fergie's stylist approached us with a design request and the outfit that we designed for her for a FIFA World Cup performance got a lot of appreciation and recognition. After that various stylists have approached us for styling and design references for other pop celebrities," Shane added. When asked how designing for an international celebrity is different, Falguni said: "Styling is different every time - whether it's an Indian or an international celeb. It depends on the individual we are styling and their sense of style and comfort. It always gives us a chance to explore, ideate and innovate," she said. Apart from creating designs for international celebs, which also include Rihanna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, they are retailing in London, Manchester, Miami and Dubai. The couple, who introduced their label in August 2002, specialises mainly in trousseau and custom-made garments. Most of their inspiration comes while travelling abroad. "Most of our inspiration is taken on our trips abroad; we often try and make time to see new places on our trips even if we travel for work. It rejuvenates us and gives us a fresh perspective," said Falguni. So what next? "We are open to reading scripts and designing for a Bollywood movie. We have a few projects we are looking into at the moment," Shane concluded.

Tuesday 5 June 2012 – Telstra customers have access to Australia’s highest quality mobile network for voice calls, mobile data and text messaging according to the JD Power and Associates 2012 Australian Wireless Network Quality Study recently released. The study surveyed customers from Australia’s major mobile brands and surveyed consumer experiences with voice calls, messages, email and the mobile internet. It ranked Telstra as providing the highest quality network for mobile phone users. The results were released as Telstra confirmed its customers are now using more than 300,000 ultra-fast fourth generation smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband devices and it had switched on its 1000th 4G LTE base station. Warwick Bray, Executive Director, Telstra Mobile said Australia’s widespread adoption of smartphones meant mobile network quality had never been more important. “We know that a great-performing mobile network is central to keeping our customers connected with the people and content they love when on the move, whether that be for business or pleasure. That's why we are constantly investing in our network to stay ahead of customer demand. “As the first telco to offer ultra-fast 4G LTE connectivity to Australians we’ve seen the appetite for fast and reliable connectivity grow as Telstra customers have taken up more than 300,000 4G devices to browse the

mobile web faster, stream music and video with fewer interruptions and enjoy rich internet content traditionally reserved for PCs, ” Mr Bray said. Mr Bray said the J.D. Power and Associates findings were consistent with customer feedback and Telstra’s regular network drive surveys which monitor network performance and allow Telstra to plan upgrades. “Our customers tell us they choose Telstra for superior coverage, fewer dropped calls and because they can enjoy reliable mobile data on the move. The research findings confirm what our customers and drive surveys have told us for years and are a testament to the skill of our network engineering team which is among the most experienced in the world,” Mr Bray added. As well as offering Australia’s highest quality network overall, the J.D. Power and Associates study found Telstra was rated highest for voice calls (with fewer dropped calls and more calls connected first try), highest for text messaging (with fewer text message failures and late text message notifications) and highest for mobile web performance (with fewer web connection errors and less excessively slow web loading). The JD Power and Associates 2012 Australian Wireless Network Quality Study is based on responses from more than 1,900 mobile customers across Australia. The study was fielded between February and March 2012.

1,500 prosecutions for tax and superannuation offences this financial year Courtesy Sudesh Aggarwal THE Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) prosecution of more than 1,500 people for tax and superannuation offences sends a clear warning to tax cheats that they can expect to be caught. Speaking at the release of the ATO’s third quarter update of prosecution results, Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo said the figures show that there are significant risks and consequences for people who do not properly fulfil their legal and civic responsibilities in relation to tax and superannuation. “The year-to-date results to 31 March reveal that the ATO successfully prosecuted 1,106 individuals and 400 companies for tax and superannuation offences,” Mr D’Ascenzo said. For example, an overseas student was convicted and sentenced to 12 months jail under the Criminal Code Act 1995 for dealing with the proceeds of crime. He operated seven bank accounts into which he received more than $80,000 in income tax refunds that he was not entitled to by lodging false income tax returns. “We have a range of measures in place to ensure we detect and deal with those who evade their obligations. This includes information sharing and working with other government agencies, and also with overseas counterparts. “The ATO pursues tax cheats to the full extent of the law to ensure honest taxpayers have their interests looked after. Australians don’t want to face an unfair burden when dishonest people avoid their tax obligations, and they expect the ATO to provide a level

playing field.” Mr D’Ascenzo said it was important to note the ATO’s commitment to encouraging willing and proper participation in the tax and superannuation systems. “Prosecution is often a last resort, but it’s there to protect the vast majority of taxpayers who do the right thing from being disadvantaged by those that don’t,” Mr D’Ascenzo added. The prosecution results show that the 1,106 individuals and 400 companies successfully prosecuted comprised: • 30 people prosecuted and convicted of serious tax crime offences, with sentences ranging from two months up to nine years. Five of these convictions occurred under Project Wickenby. These serious convictions cover a range of offences including attempting to dishonestly obtain a financial advantage by deception, dealing with the proceeds of crime, and illegally seeking access to superannuation funds. • 1,076 individuals and 400 companies were successfully prosecuted for other tax offences. Of these, 916 individuals and 332 companies had a formal conviction recorded against them. Offences included failing to lodge a tax return, providing false and misleading information, and receiving a fee for preparing an income tax return when not being a registered tax agent. People who are unclear of their tax or superannuation obligations, or are struggling to meet their obligations, should contact the ATO on 13 11 42 to discuss their situation. If you don’t speak English well and need help with your call, phone the Translating and Interpreting Service on 13 14 50.

South Korea's foreign reserves contract SEOUL, June 4 (IANS): South Korea's foreign reserves contracted to $310.87 billion last month due to a sharp fall in conversion value of non-dollar denominated assets that offset a rise in investment return, the central bank said. Foreign reserves reached $310.87 billion as of the end of May, down $5.97 billion from a month earlier, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK). The May figure was down from the record high of $316.84 billion tallied in April, but it stayed above the $300 billion mark, the psychologically-important level to protect the local financial market from the possible 18 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, June, 2012

foreign capital exodus amid the potential financial crisis, reported Xinhua. The BOK attributed the May contraction to a drop in conversion value of non-dollar denominated assets such as the British pound and the European single currency that depreciated amid growing uncertainties surrounding Europe's debt crisis. The drop in value offset an increase in investment profits, said the bank. As of the end of April, South Korea was the world's seventh-largest holder of foreign reserves following China, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, Brazil and Switzerland. Call Trudi on 07 3356 0102

Stolen Fiji Girmit history retold at tearful Girmit Remembrance Day in Auckland

• Standing- L-R Ramaiya Rao, Govind Prasad, Ram Shankar Sharma, Babru Bahan Singh, Pundit Sharda Nand Maharaj, Kapil Deo Singh and Mrs Babru Bahan Singh. Sitting: L-R Shiu Mati Prasad, Lila Wati Dutt, Audh Raji Vishwanath, Subhag Wati, Jasoda Sumer, Niyaz Begum Shariff, Shiu Bharos, Narain Prasad, R. B Sharma and Rai Mati Singh.

By Thakur Ranjit Singh “Women were forced to work on farms just days after birth and they had to leave their crying babies at the fringes of farms, not allowed to feed them….Most suicides were by hanging, committed in early mornings. When the feet touched ground because the rope was too long, the victims folded their feet- so great was the desire to die and escape from a barbarous and inhumane system of girmit-the indenture”. That is the stolen history of girmit, the indenture system that was told by Rajendra Prasad, author of “Tears in Paradise -Suffering and Struggles of Indians in Fiji 1879-2004.” People in audience could be seen wiping

their eyes. Indeed it was a tearful day to remember those who suffered to make sure the new generations never went through the same sufferings. The occasion was the first Girmit Remembrance Day at Mt Albert in Auckland, organised by Waitakere Indian Association Senior Citizens group on 20 May, 2012. Rajendra Prasad is a third generation IndoFijian - a descendant of Indian indentured labourers, who were recruited by the British to work in the sugarcane plantations in Fiji during the indenture period in Fiji from 1879-1919. He was the Town Clerk of Ba (1972-1987) and in 1974, while on a course to study local government management in Delhi, India, he located his roots. Through

his inspiration and experience, he ventured to write and research for seven years (19972004). He has accomplished paying, in a small way, his debts to his grandfather and all Girmitiyas by relating the sad tales of suffering, in his book. He told that on 14 May 1879, the first sail ship Leonidas sailed into Levuka Harbour in Fiji and disembarked 479 Indian indentured labourers. It followed 86 other coolie ships that transported 60,553 Indian indentured labourers to Fiji. Most of them were employed by the CSR Company on its large sugarcane plantations or the sugar mills. The Girmitiyas served their indenture under horrific conditions, which resulted in Fiji recording the highest rate of suicide in the 1979, had visited India to research and put together a 45 minute musical-historical presentation of Girmit. He gave a brief synopsis of his recording on girmit and promised to present the musical in a later event. He also suggested the Girmit Remembrance does not always have to be an occasion to cry, but also to celebrate the sacrifices, perseverance and foresight of their forbears. They were adaptable people who shed off old hang-ups and started afresh what we call a distinct new culture and language Indo Fijians, or Fiji Indians. It was not only a day for organisers and its speakers, but a day where the chief guests were the descendants of girmitiyas eighty years and over. And there were many of them brought by the helping hands of their children and grandchildren. Subhag Wati rendered the old sohar (traditional wedding song) at the rhythmic accompaniment of claps by the audience while Lal Bahadur took us to the “coolie’ lines of girmit era with birah sung with energy and tune of that girmit era. Pundit Sharda Nand Maharaj, Narain Prasad and Kapil Deo Singh told us about the old tales, and showed newspaper clips and evidence of old records. Niyaz Begum Shariff, sister of Fiji parliamentarian and community leader, Chirag Ali (CA) Shah told history of her family. The day was not only confined to the sad tales of the Elderlies, but also shed light on the perception of new generation on indenture. A speech, written by Waitakere Hindi School student, Praval Tahal and delivered by a first year Auckland University student, Hasmita Singh told that girmit was a day for reflection not only on the atrocities that our forebears were subjected to but also on their resilience and perseverance in moving towards a better future. “We must also reflect on the positives that have come out of the Girmit System and not dwell overly on the negatives that are bygones,” Hasmita told in her oratory. The message from new generation is that Girmit Remembrance Day for them is a day for thanksgiving. For these fifth generation descendents of Girmityas, their forefathers are regarded as great adventurers, visionaries and pioneers to whom they are grateful for shaping them into what they are today.

world during that period. The victims were deeply traumatized as physical and mental violence to men; women and children were ruthlessly administered. Fear and apprehension saturated their lives and they could not resist the evil system. “Our community paid a very heavy price and was systematically robbed of billions of dollars. Legally, there is no recourse to seeking justice but that does not absolve the British from its moral obligation to accept its iniquities and to express its remorse,” said an almost tearful Prasad and this also left other with tears. Devakar Prasad, former deputy general manager of Radio Fiji, who headed 100th Anniversary Girmit Remembrance in Fiji in They are grateful that their “real heroes” left their place of birth and sailed away to a foreign land to seek a better life for themselves and their future generations, while preserving their religion, culture and language. For these, they are grateful. Girmit Remembrance Day in Auckland was not a fundraising event, it was neither a Bollywood entertainment or a day devoted to singing and dancing, nor was it a day fr politicians and big shots. It was a day devoted to our elderly people. It was a day when the Elderlies were honoured, treated as chief guests, heard, forgotten history was told, old Girmit songs were revived and perceptions of the new generation were heard. It was an occasion where adults and children of Waitakere Indian Association took an opportunity to serve the first generation of girmitiyas with food, savouries and most importantly, love and honour which their parents were denied in girmit. It is hoped other Indo Fijians around the world will mark this day in this theme. A register of people over eighty (80) has been established and these people will be honoured by especially inscribed medals. A resolution was passed in public discussion that May 14 would be Girmit Remembrance Day, marked every year and it was agreed to form a trust and a special group, under leadership of Waitakere Indian Association, to promote knowledge and history of indenture. Those present also resolved that the tales and music of girmit should resound everywhere descendents of girmitiyas are settled as 14th May every year has been declared GIRMIT REMEMBRANCE DAY. May the souls of departed girmitiyas rest is peace, and receive salvation. May they receive our shradhanjali ke do phool- a wreath in their respected memories on this Girmit Remembrance Day..

A complete guide to Hindu rituals and routines... Cont’d from last issue Courtesy Dhaval Vyas, India 18. Why do we blow the conch? Twam puraa saagarot pannaha Vishnunaa vidhrutahakare Devaischa poojitha sarvahi Panchjanya namostu te Salutations to Panchajanya the conch born of the ocean Held in the hand of Lord Vishnu and worshipped by all devaas 19. Why do we say shaanti thrice? Shaanti, meaning "peace", is a natural state of being. Disturbances are created either by others or us. For example, peace already exists in a place until someone makes noise. Therefore, peace underlies all our agitations. When agitations end, peace is naturally experienced since it was already there. Where there is peace, there is happiness. Therefore, every one without exception desires peace in his/her life. However, peace within or without seems very hard to attain because it is covered by our own agitations. A rare few manage to remain peaceful within even in the midst of external agitation and troubles. To invoke peace, we chant prayers. By chanting prayers, troubles end and peace is experienced internally, irrespective of the external disturbances. All such prayers end by chanting shaanti thrice. It is believed that trivaram satyam - that which is said thrice comes true. For emphasizing a point we repeat a thing thrice. In the court of law also, one who takes the witness stands says, "I shall speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth". We chant shaanti thrice to emphasise our intense desire for peace. All obstacles, problems and sorrows originate from three sources. Aadhidaivika: The unseen divine forces over which we have little or no control like earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions etc. Aadhibhautika: The known factors around us like accidents, human contacts, pollution, crime etc. Aadhyaatmika: We sincerely pray to the Lord that at least while we undertake special tasks or even in our daily lives, there are no problems or that, problems are minimised from the three sources written about above. May peace alone prevail. Hence shaanti is chanted thrice. It is chanted aloud the first time, addressing the unseen forces. It is chanted softer the second time, directed to our immediate surroundings and those around, and softest the last time as it is addressed to oneself. 20. Why do we offer a coconut? In India one of the most common offerings in a temple is a coconut. It is also offered on occasions like weddings, festivals, the use of a new vehicle, bridge, house etc. It is offered in the sacrificial fire whilst performing homa. The coconut is broken and placed before the Lord. It is later distributed as prasaada. The fibre covering of the dried coconut is removed except for a tuft on the top. The marks on the coconut make it look like the head of a human being. The coconut is broken, symbolising the breaking of the ego. The juice within, representing the inner tendencies (vaasanas) is offered along with the white kernel - the mind, to the Lord. A mind thus purified by the touch of the Lord is used as prasaada ( a holy gift). In the traditional abhishekha ritual done in all temples and many homes, several materials are poured over the deity like milk, curd, honey, tender coconut water, sandal paste, holy ash etc. Each material has a specific significance of bestowing certain benefits on worshippers. Tender coconut water is used in abhisheka rituals since it is believed to bestow spiritual growth on the seeker. The coconut also symbolises selfless service. Every part of the tree -the trunk, leaves, fruit, coir etc. Is used in innumerable ways like thatches, mats, tasty dishes, oil, soap etc. It takes in even salty water from the earth and converts it into sweet nutritive water that is especially beneficial to sick people. It is used in the preparation of many ayurvedic medicines and in other alternative medicinal systems. The marks on the coconut are even thought to represent the three-eyed Lord Shiva and therefore it is considered to be a means to

fulfill our desires. 21. Why do we chant Om? Om is one of the most chanted sound symbols in India. It has a profound effect on the body and mind of the one who chants and also on the surroundings. Most mantras and vedic prayers start with Om. All auspicious actions begin with Om. It is even used as a greeting - Om, Hari Om etc. It is repeated as a mantra or meditated upon. Its form is worshipped, contemplated upon or used as an auspicious sign. Om is the universal name of the Lord. It is made up of the letters A (phonetically as in "around"), U (phonetically as in "put") and M (phonetically as in "mum"). The sound emerging from the vocal chords starts from the base of the throat as "A". With the coming together of the lips, "U" is formed and when the lips are closed, all sounds end in "M". The three letters symbolize the three states (waking, dream and deep sleep), the three deities (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva), the three Vedas (Rig, Yajur and Sama) the three worlds (Bhuh, Bhuvah, Suvah) etc. The Lord is all these and beyond. The formless, attributeless Lord (Brahman) is represented by the silence between two Om Chants. Om is also called pranava that means, "that (symbol or sound) by which the Lord is praised". The entire essence of the Vedas is enshrined in the word Om. It is said that the Lord started creating the world after chanting Om and atha. Hence its sound is considered to create an auspicious beginning for any task that we undertake. The Om chant should have the resounding sound of a bell (aaooommm). Om is written in different ways in different places. The most common form symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s. The upper curve is the head; the lower large one, the stomach; the side one, the trunk; and the semi-circular mark with the dot, the sweetmeat ball (modaka) in Lord Ganesha's hand. Thus Om symbolizes everything - the means and the goal of life, the world and the Truth behind it, the material and the Sacred, all form and the Formless. 22. Why do we do aarati? Towards the end of every ritualistic worship (pooja or bhajan) of the Lord or to welcome an honored guest or saint, we perform the aarati. This is always accompanied by the ringing of the bell and sometimes by singing, playing of musical instruments and clapping. It is one of the sixteen steps (shodasha upachaara) of the pooja ritual. It is referred to as the lighted lamp in the right hand, which we wave in a clockwise circling movement to light the entire form of the Lord. Each part is revealed individually and also the entire form of the Lord. As the light is waved we either do mental or loud chanting of prayers or simply behold the beautiful form of the Lord, illumined by the lamp. At the end of the aarati we place our hands over the flame and then gently touch our eyes and the top of the head. We have seen and participated in this ritual from our childhood. Let us find out why we do the aarati? Having worshipped the Lord of love - performing abhisheka, decorating the image and offering fruits and delicacies, we see the beauty of the Lord in all His glory. Our minds are focused on each limb of the Lord as the lamp lights it up. It is akin to silent open-eyed meditation on His beauty. The singing, clapping, ringing of the bell etc. denote the joy and auspiciousness, which accompanies the vision of the Lord. Aarati is often performed with camphor. This holds a telling spiritual significance. Camphor when lit, burns itself out completely without leaving a trace of it. It represents our inherent tendencies (vaasanas). When lit by the fire of knowledge which illumines the Lord (Truth), our vaasanas thereafter burn themselves out completely, not leaving a trace of ego which creates in us a sense of individuality that keeps us separate from the Lord. Also while camphor burns to reveal the glory of Lord, it emits a pleasant perfume even while it sacrifices itself.

Today there is a growing trend of using a variety of alternative therapies like Yunani medicine, Acupressure, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, etc. In the following article we do a comparative study at the level of action, their ability to heal, their function, limitations and risks. Allopathy Definition: Allopathy or Allopathic medicine is defined as the treatment of disease using conventional, evidencebased medical therapies, as opposed to the use of alternative medicine or non-conventional therapies. Level of action: This therapy acts at the level of the physical body. This means that: • At a preventive or curative level, Allopathy is directed at the cause of the illness limited to the physical body. Hence, psychosomatic illnesses that have an associated cause deeper than the physical body, e.g. in the mind, like Heart disease and Stomach ulcers, cannot be comprehensively and completely cured by Allopathy. • As the therapy is directed at the physical body, i.e. the grossest of all our bodies, it does not treat the effect the illness has on the subtler bodies, like the mind. This is because action directed at a gross body cannot cure the illness in bodies more subtle than it. However, an action directed at a subtler body can influence the bodies grosser than it. Ability to heal: The ability of this therapy is vastly limited to the rapid control of symptoms of illness. However this is one of its strong points too. The rapid control of symptoms is the incentive and reason why so many people take up this treatment modality despite its many shortcomings. Function: Any illness or disorder in the body generates distressing vibrations at various levels in the body. This alternative therapy functions by destroying the distressing vibrations of the illness in the physical body at the physical level. As Allopathy functions at the level of the physical body alone, it is most inferior among all the therapies. Limitations & risks: The limitation of Allopathic treatment is that our body resistance is reduced and fatigue is experienced after therapy. The risk involved in Allopathy is that healthy cells are also destroyed along with the diseased cells. Even those untrained in Allopathy may be aware of this aspect and some may have actually experienced this first hand. For

example, there is hair loss when one takes up chemotherapy to combat cancer. Here the therapy is actually directed at the diseased cancer cells; however, healthy hair follicles are being destroyed along with the diseased cancer cells. Yunani (Unani) medicine Definition: This is a term used to refer to Greco-Arabic medicine based on the teachings of Hippocrates, Galen, and Avicenna. It is based on the four humours: Phlegm (Balgham), Blood (Dam), Yellow bile (Safra) and Black bile (Sauda). It is heavily influenced by Islam. Level of action: This therapy, in addition to acting on the physical body, also acts on the energy flow in the physical body. The energy referred to here is the gross or physical metabolic energy in the body. Thus, Yunani (Unani) medicine acts at a deeper level than Allopathy. Ability to heal: The ability of this therapy is to activate the energy flow in the body. Activation of the energy flow results in better ability of the body in fighting and eventual overcoming of the disease process. Function: Yunani medicine functions by resisting the distressing vibrations in the energy flow in the body. This is because its action is limited to the level of energy flow in the body. However we can see that its action is deeper than Allopathy. Hence its effect is deeper and more comprehensive. Limitations & risks: We have seen that the outcome of this alternative therapy is influenced by the mental state of the person. As most people are under the influence of their emotions, the cure rate of Yunani therapy is low. This alternative therapy acts at the level of the energy flow in the body. If the medicine is not given in the right dose, there is a risk of an imbalance being created in the pressure of the energy flow. Due to this imbalance, there is a possibility of sudden constriction and dilatation of the body cells. Once the cells get constricted or dilated, they are damaged. This itself hampers the process of fighting the illness. Acupressure Definition: Acupressure is a technique in which physical pressure is applied to specific points by hand, elbow, or various devices to improve health and well-being. There are about 1,100 acupressure points in the body that relate to specific parts and organs of the body. Acupressure points used in treatment may or may not be in the same area of the body as the targeted symptom. By applying pressure on the specific acupressure points, the imbalance in the energy flow to that particular part or organ is modified. In this therapy, no medicine or surgery is involved. How God wants us to begin each day DEAR reader, it is our joy to bring you the word of God. Many people begin each Pastor Joseph day thinking of all the things they have to accomplish, the to-do list, the appointments they have to attend to, the bills that have to be paid, the traffic, weather etc. Instead of focusing on all the things that our circumstances can offer, how about if we just begin each day focusing on what God has to offer. In Psalm 68v19 scripture tells us that God daily loads us with His benefits. Daily, God offers us His mercy, peace, joy, unfailing love, kindness and patience. Instead of beginning each day on our feelings we are to begin each day in faith, believing that our Heavenly Father has provided for us, met all our needs, protected us and given us success. A glass filled with water can not take any more water. Likewise at busy shopping malls, we often come across CARPARK FULL signs. That means there is no more room for another vehicle. When our hearts are filled with what God has to offer, we will have no room to fill any more with

what your circumstances have on offer. There will be no room for hatred, revenge, Dass anger, frustration, jealousy, worry, fear, unforgiveness etc. When these come knocking at our doorstep we can reply "sorry I am full". "I am too full of Gods mercy, forgiveness, kindness, joy and peace, and have no room for you." We can only give what we have. What a place this whole world would be if we only gave what Our God has to offer to each one of us. Luke6v45 tells us that out of the abundance of our heart the mouth speaks. Let me encourage you today that the key to loading up is setting your mind and focus in the right direction by saying " I am blessed and can not be cursed, I am filled with the goodness of God, my heart is filled with joy, the unfailing love of God is flowing out of me, I can have patience and forgive people, God is directing my path and something good is going to happen to me today!. Isra (Night Journey) & Meraj (Night Ascension) By Ml. Nawaaz Ashrafi ON 27th Rajab, all the Muslim believers celebrate this as a grand day of Meraj as "Grand Eid" and all the Muslims should be proud to have such a prophet like Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him and his progeny (Ahlul Bayt), to whom Almighty Allah (swt) was also proud and had invited him to visit and talked with very nearer distance as mentioned in the Glorious Qur'an (Qhaba Qhausain 53:9) Also note that, the Meraj of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him has taken place more than once. However, it should be mentioned that Meraj in which the daily Salat was made incumbent, without doubt, occurred after the death of Hazrat Abu Talib, who passed away in the 10th year of Prophethood. From the Ahadith and books of history, it is mentioned that on the night of Meraj, Allah (swt) gave the order of the five daily Salat as being mandatory upon the Islamic Nation. The darkness of the night had spread across the horizon and silence reigned over the face of nature. The time had arrived when the living creatures take rest and sleep so that they might recuperate from their activities of the previous day. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), was also not an exception to this law of nature and he wished to take rest after offering his prayers (Salat) in the house of "Umm-e-Hani", the daughter of his uncle and sister of Amir alMominin Ali (ra) in the blessed city of Makkah. However, suddenly he heard a voice; it was the voice of the Archangel Jibreel (pbuh) who said to him: "This night you have to perform a very unique journey and I have been ordered to remain with you. You will have to traverse different parts of the world mounted on an animal named al-Buraq." Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him began his historical night journey, along with the trusted protector of the revelation, the Angel Jibreel (pbuh) from the house of "Umm-e-Hani", with the aid of his steed alBuraq. "After some time, Angel Jibreel (pbuh) stopped the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and said to perform the Salah. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) dismounted from alBuraq and performed Salat. Jibreel (pbuh) said, 'Do you know where you just prayed?' Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied to him in negative. Jibreel (pbuh) said, 'In Taibah (Madinah), that place where your travellers will go.' After this, Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) got back onto al-Buraq and continued the journey." "Once again, Angel Jibreel (pbuh) stopped Holy Prophet Muhammad saw)and said, 'Perform the Salat.' The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him once again dismounted al-Buraq, and performed Salat there. Jibreel (pbuh) asked Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), 'Do you know where you just prayed?' It is the Mountain of Sinai - the place where Prophet Musa / Moses (pbuh) spoke to Allah (swt)." "Once again, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him ascended alBuraq and continued. Shortly afterwards, Angel Jibreel (pbuh) said, 'Get down and perform the Salat.' Then again Jibreel (pbuh) questioned, 'Do you know where you just prayed?' The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) replied in negative, to which he answered, In Bait al-Laham (Bethlehem) - the place which is near to Baitul Maqdis and this is the place where Prophet Isa al-Masih (pbuh) was born." Then they reached Baitul Maqdis, which is located in today's Zionist occupied Jerusalem and is also known as Masjid al-Aqsa (the Furthest Mosque) and Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), proceeded to tie the reins of al-Buraq to the same ring that the great Prophets (before him) used to tie their animal to. After this Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him and his progeny entered the Masjid and it was here that he met Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and the rest of the Prophets (pbut). They all gathered around him and they all proceeded to get ready for Salat. Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him and his progeny had no doubt that the Salat would be lead by Angel Jibreel (pbuh), however when the lines for the Salat were being formed, Angel Jibreel (pbuh) placed his hand on the shoulder of Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and pushed forward. Angel Jibreel (pbuh) also took part in the Salat behind him along with the various Prophets (pbut). On the second part of his journey, he proceeded from this spot to the skies (heavens). The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), then observed the stars and the systems of the world and conversed with the souls of the previous prophets, and also with the angels of the heavens, peace and blessing be upon them all. Health Beauty Wellbeing Some diseases are hereditary By Thilliar Varnakulasingham FOR the majority of conditions, what you have inherited is a susceptibility to a disease or condition, says Associate Professor Kristine Barlow-Stewart, Director of New South Wales Health’s Centre for Genetic Education. “To happen they need a triggering factor and, although we do not know what all these factors are, there are some like smoking and a poor diet that we do know about and can avoid”, she says. Heart disease In a study published in the 2007 American Journal of Cardiology, the Hopkins team found that regardless of age or lifestyle factors, if any sibling, brother or sister, suffers a heart attack, or chest pain from blocked arteries, the chances of any healthy brothers developing similar problems rises with 10 years by 20 percent. For sisters, the risk was less but still evident, at seven percent. Researchers say the younger the age of the sibling who first develops heart disease, the greater the risk that other brothers’ and sisters’ arteries will also narrow, harden and clog. Brothers and sisters who are at risk should consult their physician and consider if drug therapy and better diet, exercise and lifestyle habits are needed. Diabetes More than 80 percent of diabetics who are diagnosed each year have at least one family member with the disease. While diabetes is caused by a genetic disorder, symptoms rarely develop before the middle age. Most diabetics (people with diabetes) are diagnosed when they are overweight. Diabetes cannot be cured, but it can be treated so that diabetics can lead normal lives. If you have a strong family history of type 2- diabetes, it is important to have a blood glucose test, especially if you are overweight or have high blood pressure. If either of your parents has type 2- diabetes, there is a one in five chance you will also get it. But it is possible to prevent the onset by being physically active and eating a healthy diet. The 10-year study of over 35,000 adults in the Netherlands found that moderate drinking can significantly lower diabetes risk even in people who live healthy lifestyles. Among people who exercise regularly, moderate drinkers were 35 percent less likely to develop diabetes than their teetotal counterparts and among people of healthy weight, drinkers had a 65 percent reduced risk compared to non-drinkers. Researchers in Canada recently found women who drank two glasses of fat-free milk after a weight-lifting session lost more fat and gained more muscle than those who followed up their exercise with an energy drink.

Mental illness There have been many studies to show that schizophrenia is found more commonly in children with one parent with the illness and even more so if both parents are affected. Manic-depression also has a genetic predisposition. In the case of alcoholism, there is a greater incidence of the disorder in the children of sufferers but the reasons for this are very unclear. People who develop dementia are more likely to have an affected relative especially if they develop the condition at a younger age. People with Downs Syndrome also have a genetic predisposition. Many psychiatric disorders have a hereditary component but none is passed down in a clear way. Lynch Syndrome Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is also known as Lynch Syndrome. It is also an inherited bowel cancer. Women are also at increased risk of cancer of the uterus, also known as endometrial cancer or cancer of the womb. Having HNPCC does not necessarily mean you will develop cancer. Not all people who carry the gene develop cancer. Breast cancer In the United Kingdom breast cancer is one of the leading cancers in women. It is estimated that one in nine women may develop breast cancer at some time in their lives, and it is the commonest cause of death in women in the United Kingdom. About five per cent of women in the United States will develop cancer at some time during their lives. The incidence of breast cancer varies appreciably in different parts of the world and it is high in the United States and low in the Orient. The causes of breast cancer are not known. However, there are risk factors about who is more likely to develop the disease. As far as risk factors are concerned only a very small per cent can be attributed to a genetic factor. Women with a family history of breast cancer may have an increased risk of developing the disease. However, most women with breast cancer in the family will never develop the disease. For some types of breast cancer, a genetic test can identify faults in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes which you can inherit from either parent, so you are not just looking at your own mother and sisters but your grandmother, aunts and cousins on your father’s side too. “If you have one or more close relatives with breast or ovarian cancer your own risk may be increased”, says Barlow-Stewart. “Even so only five percent of breast cancers are due to these inherited genes”. Breastfeeding mothers with a strong family history of breast cancer can cut their chances of getting breast cancer by 59 percent.

Alternative Therapies – a comparative study Continued from page 24 Courtesy spiritualresearchfoundation.org

Level of action: This therapy is directed at the chetna in the energy flow of the physical body. Chetna is that aspect of Divine Consciousness that governs the functioning of the body and mind. As Acupressure acts at a level beyond gross energy, its action is even deeper than that of Yunani (Unani) medicine. However, to be able to actually deliver the therapy, the therapist needs to be highly skilled, experienced, and doing the procedure with utmost concentration. Ability to heal: This therapy acts by developing the body cells as per requirement to fight the illness. The Chetna in the energy flow in the body is directed towards developing the cells as per the requirement to fight the illness. Function: Any disease process creates a resistance to the energy flow in the body. Acupressure therapy functions by activating the chetna (chētanā) in the energy flow and thereby fighting the resistance to the energy flow by the illness. As the energy flow comes to normal, the body becomes better equipped to fight the illness. Thus we can see that the illness is overcome at a deeper level than say Allopathy or Yunani medicine. Limitations & Risks: The efficacy of Acupressure therapy depends upon other factors, largely on the skill of the therapist in locating the exact acupressure points. The acupressure points are not physical (anatomical) landmarks. Hence finding them is a function of the skill, experience and, to some extent, the intuitive ability of the therapist. This being the case, there is a limitation to the illness being overcome, as it is difficult to find the specific acupressure points. In the course of Acupressure therapy, if excessive pressure is given on the acupressure points, there is a possibility of activating the distressing vibrations in the points. Mudrā Definition: In this therapy, various pos-

tures of fingers are used by themselves or directed at a body part or specific Kunḍalinī chakra. The specific posture of the fingers causes channelising of energy into and outside the body. The type of energy channelised depends on the spiritual level of the person. In a person of lower spiritual level, mostly gross physical energy is channelised. In a person with higher spiritual level, it is the subtle energies, like the Kunḍalinī energy, that is channelised. In this therapy no medicine is used. Level of action: This therapy works by activating the energy flow in a certain part of the body or set of body organs depending on where the mudra is directed. For example, if one has a stomach ache and the mudra is directed at the point of pain, then the energy flow in the stomach will be activated. However, if the mudra is directed at the Manipur chakra (at the navel), then the energy flow in the organs related to this chakra, i.e. the entire alimentary system (oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine) as well as the excretory system (kidneys, bladder) is activated. Yunani (Unani) medicine also acts at the level of energy flow in the body; however, Mudra therapy is placed higher because the same effect is achieved without using any medicine. Ability to heal: The mudras activate the energy flow to that specific organ of the body where it is directed. This enhanced energy flow then fights the illness in that organ. In addition to this a functional protective covering is created around the body so that further onslaught of illness is prevented. Function: Mudras function by dispelling the materialized distressing vibrations from the diseased parts to the outside atmosphere. By virtue of removing the distressing vibrations, healing is hastened. However a drawback of this alternative therapy is that as these vibrations are not destroyed, they can re-enter the same person or affect another person. Continued next issue

Indians vote Thailand as ‘best’ holiday destination THE many appealing attractions of Thailand are no longer a secret. The kingdom’s popularity as a holiday destiRama Gaind nation has been further sealed by readers of Travel + Leisure India and South Asia magazine as the World’s Best Country 2011 for leisure holidays and The World’s Best Wedding Destination 2011. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s deputy governor for marketing communications, Mr Prakit Piriyakiet, the award belonged to the “entire Thai travel and tourism industry for making Thailand such a wonderful destination for Indian visitors”. “We are very happy that many Indian travellers consider Thailand to be the best country for their holidays as well as for tying the knot.” Over the past decade, tourist arrivals from India have grown rapidly due to such factors as affordability, improved accessibility, facilitation and India’s growing economy. India is today the biggest source-market for visitors from south asia and one of Thailand’s fastest growing markets overall. In 2011, India became the sixth largest source market for Thailand with total arrivals of 916,787, up an equally impressive 20.27% over 2010 and close to double the 536,356 arrivals in 2007. Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mr Suraphon Svetasreni, says, “We project Indian arrivals certainly will

cross the one-million mark by 2012. Effectively, they will have doubled in just five years—a remarkable achievement indeed”. Bollywood connection It was quite by chance that I learned of another means by which Bollywood had come to the capital— through Madame Tussauds Bangkok—the first world-renowned wax attraction in south-east Asia. Speaking with Sonia Mohan (a guest from Dubai) in the hotel lobby, alerted me to this latest entertainment attraction and a chance to rub shoulders with world celebrities, famous politicians, A-list Hollywood stars, music celebrities heads of state, activists, sports heroes and heroines and even royalty. The wax museum, in the Siam Discovery shopping centre, houses the newest collection of the biggest Bollywood superstars— Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan. Here is where you can make the most of a revolutionary concept: be photographed as you touch, hug, play with or even kiss the exhibits! Why do model employees Government establishes new sub-continent ministerial commitee tend to give up? THE Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Senator Kate Lundy, Senator for Tasmania, Lisa Singh, and Member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland MP, today (4 June 2012) announced the Government is inviting members of the Sub-Continent community to join its new Ministerial Consultative Committee. “The Sub-Continent is a source of increasing numbers of new migrants to Australia, so the Government is establishing this Ministerial Consultative Committee to make sure the Sub-Continent community can express its views to Government,” Mr Bowen said. “This new committee will provide a valuable means of communication between senior Government ministers and Sub-Continent community leaders,” Senator Lundy said. Senator Singh and Ms Rowland will co-chair the committee. “I am proud of my heritage

and the contributions that people from the Sub-Continent have made to Australia,” Senator Singh said. “Australia’s Sub-Continent community contributes to the richness of our society and I look forward to engaging with and meeting members of this community to discuss our future.” “It is crucial that we listen to the views of the SubContinent community in Australia and really engage with them,” Ms Rowland said. “I am looking forward to working closely with the SubContinent community to best understand their concerns and hear their feedback on how the Federal Government can help them.” The Ministerial Consultative Committee will comprise approximately 10 members, drawn from Sub-Continental community leaders across Australia. The committee will meet regularly with the co-chairs and at least twice a year with Ministers Bowen and Lundy. The Government will also hold an annual forum for the

WASHINGTON, June 3 (IANS) Model employees committed to their organisation are willing to go the extra mile to see it thrive but can give up if they sense that they're being asked to do more and more, and with fewer resources, while comparatively little is being asked of their less-engaged colleagues," a new study says. Wayne Hochwarter, a professor of business administration at the Florida State University College of Business, surveyed 1,000 people, in both blue-and white-collar occupations, to gain a clearer picture of the concept of employee engagement, its benefits for the employer, and its possible dangers when not managed well. "Engaged employees work harder, are more creative and more committed, and they represent an important predictor of company productivity," he said, according to a Florida statement. "Unquestionably, organisations with engaged workers have weathered recessionary pressures more successfully," Hochwarter added. Hochwarter found that engaged employees reported: A 50 percent higher rate of job satisfaction; a 45 percent higher rate of job performance; a 40 percent higher rate of life satisfaction; a 33 percent lower

www.indiantimes.com.au

rate of turnover intention; and a 30 percent higher rate of commitment to their employer. "Once-engaged employees who are now disengaged can cause more harm to a company than those who were never engaged," Hochwarter warns. The tricky part comes in keeping those employees engaged. Hochwarter's findings clearly illustrate that engaged workers, without needed company support and other resources, can begin to exhibit a number of undesirable attitudes and behaviours. Without those additional resources, engaged employees began to display the following negative attributes: A decline in helping behavior (50 percent lower); increased anger at supervisors (35 percent higher); a view that expectations are beyond one's capabilities (33 percent higher); additional stress (30 percent higher); and lower overall productivity (25 percent lower). Hochwarter cited the example of one study participant who falls into that category. The 32-year-old financial consultant wrote: "I really did my best, worked long hours, contributed something every day...but the more I did, the more resources they took from me and gave to other employees." Real Estate News Qld market turns a corner THE Queensland property market has turned around and posted positive results for the first time in 18 months, according to the REIQ. The REIQ March quarter median house price report found property prices across the majority of Queensland increasing with sales numbers also up – in some cases significantly. REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said positivity was finally returning to the market. “Three months ago when we analysed the December quarter data it seemed to indicate we had reached the bottom of the market because prices were stabilising, he said. “We predicted at the time that the March quarter data would be even more positive and it certainly is that. Property prices have grown in most areas and some regions have also experienced substantial increases in sales activity, which is a hugely welcome turn around. “And while the March quarter figures contain plenty of good news, perhaps the best piece of news is some very healthy results in our tourism centres, which have struggled more than most over the past two years. The top performer of all major regions across the State was Fraser Coast, which posted median house price growth of 7.8 per cent to $290,000 over the March quarter. The numbers of preliminary house sales were also up an impressive 42 per cent. Local REIQ agents say the region had benefited from a busy Christmas period as well as an increase in buyers prepared to buy due to the affordability of property in the area. The second best performer was Cairns, which recorded median house price growth of 4.5 per cent to $350,000. Local

agents say the region now represented excellent value with demand increasing, especially in the upper end of the market. “It is wonderful that Queensland’s tourism centres are starting to experience improving market conditions, REIQ chairman Pamela Bennett said. “Fraser Coast and Cairns have not had much time in the sun over recent times so to see their markets starting to turn a corner are surely a sign of more positive results in the months ahead. Another tourism region to perform well was the Whitsundays, where its median house price increased 4.1 per cent to $350,000 over the March quarter with sales numbers up 28 per cent as well. The Sunshine Coast also experienced a significant increase in sales activity – up 24 per cent compared to the December quarter. Queensland’s resource centres continue to experience strong demand from buyers however property price growth in Gladstone appears to have plateaued this quarter – albeit after posting median house price increase of 16.5 per cent over the year ending March. “Historically, it has been our resource centres that have led the charge during Queensland property cycles, closely followed by Brisbane, then our tourism centres and this pattern does seem to be repeating, Mr Kardash said. “It’s still too early to tell whether this renewed confidence is here to stay, but a number of economic indicators, as well as lower interest rates, mean the future of our property market is certainly looking up. The median house price in Brisbane increased 1.2 per cent to $505,000 over the March quarter.

Astrology Aries “The Ram” “The Go-Getter” March 21 - April 20 The cosmic configuration this month induces a bit of lethargy in your life. Despite your best efforts, people and circumstances will seem to be unresponsive. You will reap the fruits of the independent lifestyle you have been leading, for better or worse. Ganesha says the best thing to do now is to bide your time till things start looking up towards the end of the month. All you can do right now is introspection and preparing for demanding times ahead. For students, though, this is a good time to expand their intellectual horizons, and those involved in higher studies will benefit most. This is not the time to take risks of any kind, so avoid speculation or it may drain your resources, and also avoid diets and lifestyle that may cause health problems. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 12, 13, 23. Taurus “The Bull” “The Builder” April 21 - May 22 This month will be reasonably good for you, especially from the financial standpoint, but you will have to tide over a mini-crisis caused by the lunar eclipse on the 4th. You will not only receive support from funds of family members, but even professional financiers will be ready to chip in to give a boost to your ideas of implementing new projects. Though health will be good, there is a definite risk of accidents and injuries, so Ganesha warns you to be careful while driving. Your vehicle too may need to be repaired or replaced. Existing relationships will be under stress while marriage plans must be postponed. You will develop an interest in spirituality, perhaps even change your religious practices, but the changes will be all for the better. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 15, 16, 24, 25. Gemini “The Twins” “The Magician” May 23 - June 21 A very good month awaits you. Though there will be minor setbacks, they will be offset by positive developments. With your confidence level rising, everything around you seems to be conspiring in your favour. People will look up to you with respect. You will achieve your financial targets and thus will be able to afford all the goodies you have been eyeing for some time. Your financial fortunes will get even better from here on. There will be no problems on the health front; you will have enough energy to accomplish all your tasks, but Ganesha advises you to get enough rest to recoup your system. Relationships will prosper and new bonds will get stronger. You will enjoy the ecstasy of love, but put off marriage plans for slightly later. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 9, 17, 18, 27, 28. Cancer “The Crab” “The Caterer” June 22 - July 22 You may expect changes in job, health and even in your sartorial sense. The change in health may be for the better or for the worse, but it will definitely affect the way you approach the issue. It is a good thing you are developing a bent for spirituality, as the practices associated with it like yoga and meditation will help improve your health. A change of job is foreseen, but Ganesha advises you to hold out for a better opportunity. The one thing that can change everything in your life is a financial windfall, and even that is on the cards. This is also a good time to have fun and share your good fortunes with your friends and family. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 10, 11, 20, 29. Leo “The Lion” “The Boss” July 23 - August 22 This is when you begin to take charge of your life. You will be in control of events revolving around you. People will turn to you for motivation, and if you lead from the front positively, you will reap positive results, or else the results may not be that good. It is up to you, says Ganesha, but there is no need to get bogged down for fear of making mistakes. The important thing is to learn from them and move on. Some of you would have already achieved your goals, and if such is the case, it is the right time to sit back, ponder about how you could have done things better, and chalk out your goals for the future. You will feel more creative, so channelise your energies accordingly. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 12, 13, 22, 23. Virgo “The Virgin” “The Accountant” August 23 - Sept 22 While on the career front you will make considerable progress, with increments and promotions on the cards, there may be some disturbances on the home front. In fact, the family disputes may be serious enough to warrant that you put some of your professional responsibilities on hold. Besides, the lunar eclipse on the 4th may add to your woes, by adversely affecting your health. However, Ganesha assures you that it will improve by the last week of the month. Travel plans need to be postponed in view of the risks foreseen this month. You also need to get a better perspective of your financial situation before taking any major decisions regarding it. Home PCs or other gadgets need upgradation. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 15, 24, 25.

www.indiantimes.com.au

Libra “The Scales”“The Councellor”Sept 23 - October 22 There are going to be important changes taking place in your career this month. Though initially these changes may not be much to your liking, Ganesha assures you that in the long run you will realise how favourable they were. The lunar eclipse and other planetary configurations also will favour you, though briefly they may dent your self-confidence. You may also experience frequent temperamental changes, but this phase too will pass by the end of the month and you will begin to feel more stable. There may be some disturbing events in the lives of your family members, but nothing to seriously worry about. A marriage in your social circle will lift your spirits and you will get back to work after that with renewed vigour. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 9, 17, 18, 27, 28. Scorpio “The Hydra” “The Psycho Analyst” Oct 23 - Nov 21 This will be a financially rewarding month for you, both directly and indirectly. There is the possibility of an inheritance of wealth. Besides, your spouse or some other member of the family may land up a far more lucrative job or there may be an increase in business profits, and they may shower their riches on you. Changes may be expected, says Ganesha, in the lives of students as well as grown-ups. Students may change their stream of studies or school/college, while adults will experience a sort of transformation of faith by abandoning old beliefs and adopting new ones. There is a risk of accidents or a breakdown due to fatigue this month, so you need to drive carefully and take care of your health by getting enough rest. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 10, 20, 21, 29. Sagittarius “The Archer” “The Teacher” Nov 22 - Dec 22 In some ways this is a strange month with strange experiences in store. The death of near and dear ones may come in your dreams, and you too may actually have a close shave with death. You need to exercise caution, especially when it comes to matters of health. Though no signs of illness or diseases are foreseen, Ganesha says you need to conserve energy, exercise regularly and get a good 8 hours of sleep at night. And avoid reckless driving or doing anything that might harm you physically. Love and marriage are in the air, which raise your spirits. You will make more friends and expand your social circle. Money too will not be a problem, because your wealthy partners will share their riches with you. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 13, 22, 23. Capricorn “The Goat” “The Mayor” Dec 23 - January 30 This month's lunar eclipse, following close on the heels of last month's solar eclipse, continues to effect changes in your life, though not all of them will be negative. You will feel the impact of the eclipse for weeks before and after the actual event. By far the most important gain you will make during this period is developing a spiritual bent of mind. You might take on a spiritual master, change you belief systems, or it may be something as drastic as changing your religion altogether. You may find you loved ones behaving in a strange way. However, Ganesha says it is not your relationships with them that are causing problems but the setbacks, also perhaps influenced by the eclipses, that they are facing. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 15, 16, 24, 25. Aquarius “The Water Bearer” “The Innovator” Jan 21 - Feb 19 Back-toback eclipses – the solar eclipse last month and the lunar eclipse this month – have a significant impact on the career of most of you. A change of job or nature of responsibilities is on the cards. Some may be offered better opportunities, others may be presented the pink slip. Minor changes in health may cause major anxiety, but Ganesha assures that it will be nothing to worry about and the effects will soon wane, and you will feel healthy again. Things begin to look up towards the end of the month as you will enjoy partying, socialising and will learn a lot about yourself through new friends. On the financial front too you will be successful, but take care not to let those around you exploit your fortunes. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 8, 9, 17, 18, 28. Pisces “The Fish” “The Social Worker” Feb 20 - March 20 This month's lunar eclipse in a way replicates the effects of last month's solar eclipse. Especially on the professional front, there will be significant changes. There will be major changes in the staff structure and strength of your company, forcing you to adapt yourself to the new circumstances all over again. On the domestic front, too, you may have to face problems. Not only you but most of your family members will become more irritable, and a rift between your parents may widen to such an extent that one of them may choose to separate. The financial front, thankfully, will be stable, but Ganesha advises you to keep off speculative transactions. In fact all activities involving risk both for you and your family members must be avoided. The dates to watch out for any important tasks this month are 10, 11, 20, 21.

Bollywood & Entertainment Lady Gaga loves the sitar: Fateh Ali Khan MANALI, June 3 (IANS) Delhi-based sitar player Fateh Ali Khan, who performed with Lady Gaga, says that the Grammy award winning singer not only knows about India's classical instruments but also appreciated his work. "When I took my sitar in front of Lady Gaga before my performance, she said she loved the sitar and listened it a lot in the US," Khan, who performed with Gaga at the Formula 1 after party, told IANS. "She liked the designs on my sitar and already knew about the instrument. That's why she wanted me to play it in the beginning of her act. She's very humble and professional. It was an honour for me that my music and talent has been recognised by her," he added. According to Khan, maestros such as Ravi Shankar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Bismillah Khan and others have made classical instruments popular globally. "Thanks to our maestros...they have made the classical instruments popular in the global arena," he added. He was speaking on the sidelines of ongoing Manali Summer Sundowner, a month long music and arts festival that started here June 1. The 36-year-old is the sixth generation performing artist from Moradabad Gharana. "My whole family is into the tabla and the sarangi. I learned singing at the age of seven from my grandfather. Though my family is known for the sarangi, I learned the sitar. It's been more than 25 years that

I've been playing sitar," he added. Khan, who is associated with bands like Kabul and Soul Samvaad, has so far launched four albums. He also gave music for some international songs with his brother Murad Ali Khan, who plays the sarangi. "Other than Kabul, I'm also playing for Soul Samvaad. Both the bands have the sarangi and the sitar. My brother also plays in the same band. I've also played for Latin, lounge, rock and world music," he said. A fan of late Jagjit Singh's ghazals, Khan feels music is about listening through emotions. "I listen to music by heart that's why I love to listen to soft music and ghazals. My favourite is ghazals by Jagjit Singh," he said. The band Kabul has seven member Khan, who plays the sitar, drummer Vishal Mehta, lead guitarist Subhanshu Singh, vocalist Kabul, Kamal who handles keyboards and bassist Deepak. The band performed at the Manali music fest on Saturday 2 June.

Abhay's skin show in 'Shanghai' NEW DELHI, June 4 (IANS) Abhay Deol has dared to bare his torso in Dibakar Banerjee's "Shanghai" a la Ranbir Kapoor's in "Saawariya". If the latter wore a towel, Abhay will be seen in a lungi for a scene. The actor plays a Tamil IAS officer in the political thriller, and it is rare for him to take off his shirt. "It's not a towel... It's a south Indian lungi," Abhay said, flashing his dimpled smile at a press conference. In 2011, it was reported that Abhay insisted on wearing a vest for the song "Paint it red" for the movie "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara". In "Shanghai" he was apprehensive about wearing just a lungi. "I cried many days that why you're making me wear this... but then we decided to go with it. I told Dibakar to take care of the lighting... that's all," said the 36-yearold. Unlike most actors who focus on building the perfect abs for a topless scene, Abhay kept his physique normal for "Shanghai". "Dibakar said I shouldn't go and make a gym body with six packs. He said - 'Be athletic, keep your physique as it is, don't pump yourself with steroids otherwise you won't look like an IAS officer for sure'," Abhay said. Banerjee says the focus was more on the scene, rather than Abhay's body. "While filming that scene, we weren't really thinking what Abhay would look like because it was a one-take scene when a burning brick wrapped in cloth and kerosene oil had to crash in through a window to the left of Abhay and land-

Now vote for 'The Greatest Indian' NEW DELHI, June 5 (IANS) From Jawaharlal Nehru and Lata Mangeshkar to Vikram Sarabhai and E. Shreedharan - a list of Indians who have shaped the country since its independence, have been listed under various categories as part of an initiative by History TV18 and CNN IBN to win "The Greatest Indian" title. As many as 50 nominees across five categories political leaders, arts and social leaders, movie related, entrepreneurs and idea leaders and sports and administrators, have been • Dev Anand. shortlisted for the initiative. Based on British show "The Greatest Briton", which has been adapted in 21 countries so far, the series, which went on air Monday 4 June, is set to trigger a debate on who is the greatest Indian after Mahatma Gandhi. "I'm sure this series will trigger an enthusiastic debate in homes, offices and public places around the country," Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief, IBN18 Network, said in a press statement. According to Ajay Chacko of A+E Networks | TV18, the poll will help youth recognise the achievements of country's key individuals. "This partnership with CNN IBN enables HISTORY TV18 to bring forth the inspiring figures over the years, after the Mahatma, who have had the maximum impact on the country's present and future. "While the jury and nationwide polls will ultimately lead to the search for that one individual who's contribution to India has been overwhelmingly acknowledged as the most enduring, it also gives us Indians a chance to be aware of the contributions of many other great individuals from diverse fields," he said. The jury for the entire process consists of a

panel of 28 Indians from different walks of life. It includes names like Shashi Tharoor, Nandan Nilekani, Rajkumar Hirani, Soli Sorabjee, Shabana Azmi and Arun Jaitley among others. Along with the nationwide poll, equal weightage will be given to the jury's selection as well as a separate market research poll conducted by The Nielsen Company. At first, a shortlist of the top 10 'Greats' will be decided, followed by the selection of the 'Greatest Indian'. The shortlist of top 10 'Greats' is slated to be revealed July 1 and the second round of voting will begin soon after. The initiative will culminate with the announcement of The Greatest Indian in a glittering ceremony to be telecast around Independence Day this year. As part of the nationwide poll, viewers can cast their vote by visiting the website TheGreatestIndian.in or giving a missed call to a unique number assigned to their nominee of choice. Here are the names of some leaders listed under each category: Political leaders - Atal Bihari Vajpayee, B. R Ambedkar, Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, APJ Abdul Kalam Arts and social leaders: Baba Amte, Mother Teresa, Pt. Ravi Shankar, M. F. Husain, Bismillah Khan Movie related: Amitabh Bachchan, Raj Kapoor, Rajinikanth, Satyajit Ray, Dev Anand, Mohammad Rafi Entrepreneurs and idea leaders: Homi Bhabha, Dhirubhai Ambani, Ghanshyam Das Birla, J. R. D. Tata, Ramnath Goenka, Amartya Sen Sports and administrators: Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Dhyan Chand, Viswanathan Anand, Milkha Singh.

ABCD has better dancers than me: Prabhu Deva ing to Abhay's right side, and keep burning. There were three risks - it could have hit Abhay, it could have hit the camera or it could have hit the laptop in front of Abhay. "We were really nervous about it. So that time how Abhay looked hardly mattered. But in fact, I remember I wanted him to grow a slight paunch for it... I am sure he would have done it... but we didn't have time," said the filmmaker. "Shanghai", releasing Friday 8 June, also features Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin.

MUMBAI, June 5 (IANS) After the roaring success of Prabhu Deva's film, "Rowdy Rathore", he will be next seen acting in Remo D'Souza's ABCD (Any Body Can Dance) with renowned choreographer Ganesh Acharya. "ABCD is an out and out dance film. It is 3D which is the best part. I also dance in the film and I would also love to see the film in 3D. This is the speciality of the film. Remo has directed it. Big B says it has brought the memories of the their wedding day flooding back. The couple got married June 3, 1973 and have two children - son Abhishek and daughter Shweta. "39 years! And just made it to the blog in time to write. A minute more and all the headers would have had to undergo change. Greetings have been exchanged, family has gathered round with wishes...and dear occupy most of the space in the house...Now .. a time to reminisce, to go back and relive those moments, to remember all that transpired," the 69-year-old posted on blog bigb.bigadda.com. " 'Zanjeer' had just released. And Jaya and I and a few dear friends had decided that if the film did well we would all go to London for a holiday. After a few anxious days on the results of the box office, it was time to

put our decision 'in line'. "So I told my parents, who I had now invited to come and live with me, as is the culture in our land, about our decision. And my Father came down heavily on me - 'If you are planning a holiday with this girl, you will have to marry her and go, else your decision is denied.' "I was an obedient child! MUMBAI, June 3 (IANS) Katrina Kaif is super busy. In Thailand, she's reportedly shooting heavy duty action sequences with Salman Khan for "Ek Tha Tiger" by day, and training by night for her forthcoming action sequences, which include handto-hand combat, with Aamir Khan, for "Dhoom 3". "Aditya Chopra has flown in three special trainers for Katrina to get body-toned for her action sequences with Aamir in 'Dhoom 3'," said a source adding that the trainers have to make her look convincing as a combatant assassin in "Dhoom 3". Kabir Khan is making the actress do other kind of stunts in front of the camera. Said a source from on-location: "It's two

completely different kinds of action discipline for Katrina on camera for 'Ek Tha Tiger' and off camera for 'Dhoom 3'. And it's sapping her energies. "Her metabolism is confused - as during daytime she is doing hardcrore raw action with Salman and in the night training for highly sophisticated Jackie Chan kind of flips and somersaults for 'Dhoom 3'." Luckily, for the over-exerted diva, she now has some reprieve on the "Dhoom 3" front. Apparently Aamir Khan has informed his producers that he is not quite ready for action. Katrina remained unavailable for comment.

"Marriages and weddings entail great amount of ritual and protocol and decorum and priests and pundits and maulvis. They last for days with great fanfare. Ours was a simple Bengali pundit wedding, exchange of flowered garlands, the mangal sutra, the sindoor and it was all over before the women from Jaya's side could stop their finger in mouth screams of 'odododooooo' … or words to that effect," he added.

While Azharuddin is in the Congress, Sidhu and Azad are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Former India opener Chetan Chauhan was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Amroha on BJP ticket.

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 4 (IANS) Ronaldinho has denied accusations of indiscipline at Flamengo and says delayed payments were his prime reason for leaving the club. Ronaldinho quit Flamengo Thursday and is suing the Rio de Janeiro outfit for $20 million in unpaid wages and image rights. Flamengo's football manager Zinho Friday lambasted the former Barcelona and AC Milan star's regular absences from training and even accused him of arriving at one session under the influence of alcohol. "At the worst, I arrived at training tired sometimes, which is what happens to many players," Ronaldinho was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "But I have always been profeswww.indiantimes.com.au

sional and never arrived at a session in an unsuitable state to train. I have played nearly every game for the club this year," he

said. The 32-year-old also denied reports he took a female guest back to the team hotel in the preseason and said he never had a problem with former coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo. "I never fought with him," he said. "When we were winning games last year, nobody said anything." When asked about the delayed wages, the two-time FIFA world player of the year said: "It was the final straw. There were several delayed payments." He denied the club's failure to pay him had anything to do with his own inconsistent form this season. "When we enter the pitch, everything is forgotten," he added. Call Trudi on 07 3356 0102

Park Cricket 2020 competition begins June 23 at Indooroopilly PARK Cricket 2020 (PC 2020) is Brisbane’s newest sporting sensation and combines the best elements of indoor and outdoor cricket. The game affords everyone – regardless of ability or talent – an equal amount of time at the crease batting and ensures every player bowls at least one over. According to Tom Longworth (the game’s founder), “PC 2020 is the what so many cricket lovers have been looking for…a short, sharp version of the game that gives everyone (regardless of ability) a chance to hit that perfect cover drive, smash that 6, or bowl that pearler that takes the off stump out of the ground”. So how does that work from a batting perspective? Well, teams are split into 4 pairs (if fielding 8 players) with each pair batting for 5 overs. During this 5 over period, if you are given out by the umpire (e.g. caught, bowled or LBW) the team loses 4 runs but you stay at the crease as a batsmen. This enables you to play that swash-buckling cover drive or slog sweep off the stumps without fear of the consequences.

…and is there anything in it for the bowlers? Well according to Longworth, there most certainly is! “The bowling team can nominate an over for a ‘Power Play’ where each wicket is worth -8 runs (instead of -4 runs). Whilst on first glance, the game might be seemed geared in favour of batsmen, good bowlers taking plenty of wickets can dramatically reduce a team’s total score”. This inaugural PC 2020 competition begins on Saturday, June 23, at Indooroopilly State High

School and all details can be viewed at www.parkcricket.com.au . The game is incredibly cheap with it costing only $100/Team/Week to play 40 overs of cricket. In addition, PC 2020 will be giving one lucky reader the chance to secure a FREE TEAM entry into the Indooroopilly competition for the best and most unique team name. You can submit your "team name" entry via Tom Longworth at tom@trl.com.au or 0422 861 353.

Spain defeat China 1-0 in Euro 2012 warm-up

"We have excellent teamwork, we are almost like a family," said the 28-year-old Ganguly, who had created a sensation at the age of 11 by becoming the youngest player to beat a grandmaster. "Overall, there was a lot of pressure. All through the night we worked. A day before Anand had his games against Gelfand, we would work from morning to night, taking small breaks for lunch and dinner." As Anand would rest after a game, the seconds would get down to analysing his and Gelfand's game, trying to find loopholes in the Israeli's defence to zero in on a move that could be the killer. "Daily we decided the strategy, trying to detect flaws in Gelfand's preparations. It was non-stop work," said Ganguly, who became an international master at the age of 16 and a grandmaster at 19. "And in chess, the entire thing is a tough process. For every new move, we have to anlayse 50,000-100,000

moves that could follow or the opponent could play." Ganguly rated Anand's defeat in the seventh game of the classical format that preceded the tie-breaker as the toughest moment. "It was very tough throughout the championship, more so when Anand lost. It's good that he immediately came back by winning the next game." The two players finished 66 in the 12-game classical contest, and things moved to the tie-break, where Anand won the second game to clinch it 2.5-1.5. "Gelfand played really well. He played the games on lines which he had never attempted before. His game always had the surprise element. It was only when Anand won the second game of the tie-break that we started thinking he will scrape through." What did Ganguly gain from his close involvement in the battle? "I learnt a lot - new moves, Anand's attitude, and strategies I can now use in my game."

MADRID, June 4 (IANS) Spain finished their preparation for the European football Championships with a narrow 1-0 win at home over a hard-working Chinese national side. The Chinese, coached by former Spain boss Jose Antonio Camacho, played well in the first half and created chances against Spain, before defending stoutly until David Silva scored the only goal of the game Sunday with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Vicente Del Bosque preferred Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo in his starting 11 ahead of Fernando Torres and Fernando Llorente, reported Xinhua. Despite Spain's dominance, Hao Junmin tested Iker Casillas in goal with another shot half way through the half and it needed a magnificent save from the Spain keeper to deny Zheng Zhi after 29 minutes. Del Bosque made several changes at halftime bringing on winger Jesus Navas and striker Fernando Torres along with Andres Iniesta and his Barcelona companion Victor Valdes, who replaced Casillas in goal. Navas' entry gave more pace to Spain and China keeper Zeng Chen did well to tip

over from Iniesta seven minutes into the second half. The keeper then did well to clear from Torres after Spain looked to catch out an advanced China back line. Just after the hour Spain hit the woodwork twice in the space of a minute -- first through Raul Albiol, who headed a corner against the crossbar following a flick from Torres, before Iniesta was unlucky to see an individual move end with another shot against the bar. In the second half, China were finding it much harder to trouble the Spanish penalty area as the home side looked to open the scoring. Spain looked to be on the point of scoring several times before Sun Xiang hit a low left-foot free kick which Valdes gathered cleanly with just over 10 minutes remaining, while at the other end David Silva headed over the bar when he should have scored. Silva finally opened the scoring with five minutes remaining after a darting run from Iniesta, which opened up the Chinese defence to leave him with a simple tap-in.
