WELCOME to June issue, the big buzz this month is the tax time, the government incentive of immediate Tax write off for up to $20,000 is a good stimulus. Business owners are busy exploring ways of utilising this provision before 30 June. There will be a boost in new car sales; overall the desired result would be a boost to the economy. Getting back to our newspaper we are happy to report that many new distributors have come on board and we have had to increase our print run and we remain the largest circulated newspaper reaching out to the entire community. Our local content is unrivalled thanks to many contributors from the community. Our community connect has seen us being exclusive media partners to many worthwhile functions. Lately we have had many people come to our office for interviews, the list just keeps growing. We have full time local staff with a fully fledged office and our distribution is outsourced to a credible courier company. We encourage everyone in the community to submit articles of any newsworthy function for publication. We often write articles from our perspective keeping in mind what general public would like to read, this is sometimes hard for a person from within the organisation as they tend to place more importance on individuals rather the overall picture. Preparing a good media release is an art, it should include all the information, what was the function for, how many people came, who was the main speaker etc. The most common complaint we get is that someone did not get a mention in an article. Once I was rightly told by a restaurant owner friend that many people who come to dine in do not possess good ordering skills, according to him ordering is an art, you must know what will go well with what. So a good dining experience depends upon the art of ordering not necessarily the restaurant itself. And now to Australian Indian radio we have had such an increase in demand that our listeners nearly choked the internet, NBN box has been installed outside our building and it is just a matter of time we

are told. The speciality programs like Malayalee, Tamil and Punjabi have become very popular and more and more listeners are tuning into the programs. The dial to listen option is very good as well; the audio quality will be a little bit inferior to the internet based mediums. On the community scene, I have been very busy with multiple functions and events, GOPIO Queensland has been very active and have started this year with a complete bang, gearing up for India Day Fair. Indian Day Fair this year is progressing well, being an Iconic event added responsibility has been put on us. The stage line is looking very impressive with International artistes’ lined for the main attraction. We would still like to invite all our regional community groups to come forward if you have a performance from your region, let’s all come to together to make this another grand success, end of the day we are all people of Indian origin. I would also like to congratulate the Tuesday Ramayana group for completing Ramayana for the fourth time. Congratulations also to Vishnu Maya Mandir for making a very steady progress, Bala Samskar Kendra, white ribbon Queensland committee for the wonderful work that you all do. I will be attending the GOPIO International general body meeting in New York from 5th till 10th of June, a very important meeting of all GOPIO International officials and life members. I would also like to thank everyone who attended Girmit Diwas, a commemorative service in memory of fist Indian to have arrived in Fiji. This day is now observed globally, from this year GOPIO International is getting involved with many World Yoga Day including our South Africa chapter. In conclusion I would like to invite your valuable feedback; we are here to serve you and if there is anything we can do to better serve you please let us know. Until Next Month Happy reading, Umesh Chandra

Migration Updates....
Update to implementation of fees Immigration SA
TO help ensure continued improvement in the assessment of applications, Immigration SA is introducing application fees effective from the 10th June 2015, for skilled and business nominations. Immigration SA encourages agents to submit applications by 12am South Australian time on the 9th June before application fees are introduced. An email has been sent to all applicants with pending applications (i.e. an application commenced in our online system but not yet submitted) to encourage submission prior to fee implementation. The Immigration SA application section of the website will be unavailable Wednesday 10th June from 9am to implement the new payment process. Skilled and Business Nomination Applications after this date will incur a fee. The fee structure is based on a competitive fee rather than full cost recovery and reflects the mutual benefit to both the State and the skilled migrants. South Australia is joining the ACT, WA, NSW and Queensland who already charge application fees, with the South Australian fees being at the lower end of those charged by these jurisdictions. Frequently asked information about fees is available at Naam Migration Australia and
further updated application terms and conditions are located at NAAM MIGRATION AUSTRALIA Payment will be by credit card only (Visa and Master card) at the time of application submission. In order to maintain the benefits of improved processing times achieved through a 90 day project undertaken in 2013, fees will fund an ongoing commitment to streamlining and standardising processes and IT systems and in maintaining processing resources. No fee is charged for local South Australian employer sponsored applications. Devotees perform Navgraha Maha Yagna at Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir Courtesy Devika Maharaj SHREE Vishnu Maya Mandir performed Navgraha Maha Yagna on the 17 May. Dharam Guru Acharya Pt. Ram Harash Tripathi Ji performed the yagna together with other priests and all devotees that were present. It was a very auspicious occasion for all the devotees and a very fruitful yagna for one and all. Programme commenced with Navgraha Maha Yagna followed by Bhajans, Aarti and Mahaprasad. The significance of yagna is as follows The term Navgraha denotes the nine celestial bodies which are central to astrological calculations (and beliefs) (and not the nine planets as it is frequently erroneously translated). The Sun, the moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and two shadow planets Rahu and Ketu constitute the Navgrahas. The nine grahas or planets in our horoscope control our karma, our desires and their outcomes. Each of these
nine planets exerts an influence on our lives, which is called dasa and it can be known from ones horoscope. Navgraha puja and yagna is undertaken to reduce the negative effects and improve the positive energies related to a person. Describing the significance of worshipping Navgrahas, Lord Vishnu told Rudra, “The one who worships the Navgraha with appropriate rituals attains all the four purusharth (objectives of man’s life”) – Dharma, Artha, Kaam and Moksha.

Visa price increase means Tuesday Ramayana Group completes Ramayana recital for Love in Australia breaks a fourth time the bank – 390 percent increase over five years FALLING in love with someone from another country and making plans to be together in Australia will get harder from 1 July when the Federal government increases the price of partner visas by 50 percent. Emma Drynan from Freedom Migration said this is the second time in six months the price has increased. “From July 1, the cost of falling in love with an Australian will set the visa applicant back a whopping $6,865,” she said. “Since 2009, the Federal Government has increased partner visa prices by 390% and now they have announced another price increase. “This put families and couples on the back foot financially right from the start.” Emma said people in love are willing to do anything to be together. “Another increase will result in couples being separated for extended periods, or starting their life together in significant debt when really it’s a time for them to save towards a new home or a stable future together,” she said. “For any expat returning home permanently there are already enough challenges; the stress of finding a new home, re-entering the workforce and establishing yourself back into your old life is just as confronting as when you first decided to set off on your adventure leaving your home country. “They now face the barrier of having to outlay nearly $7,000 to bring their partner home – the person they love. This additional increase makes the process of relocating

back to Australia almost impossible for many expats.” Australia attracts the highest fee of all Western countries as far as partner visa fees are concerned. America charges $344 for partner visa and $1,800 for the UK. Emma said the government is limiting cross cultural relationships to the elite, making it only accessible for couples who are willing to pay a “crazy amount of money for love”. “This price rise affects all offshore partner visa and prospective marriage visa applications including a subclass 309 and subclass 300 visa. “There is not real reason to increase visa fees expect to raise revenue. If you are unhappy or affected by the cost of lodging a partner visa contact your Member of Parliament to voice your concerns. www.freedommigration.com
THE Tuesday Ramayana group has been holding Ramayana recital at Gayatri Mandir, 178 Lyndhurst Road Boondall since 1991, the prayer group meets every Tuesday without fail, rain hail or shine. Until last year Master Jhinku Prasad has been the preacher of Ramayana for the Tuesday Prayer group. He is currently undergoing medical treatment and young Alpesh Pramar has taken on the reins. The specialty of this group is that they mainly concentrate on Ramayana recital at Gayatri Mandir and very seldom will they go out to private residences. The group is not run like a traditional Ramayan Mandali. Everyone is equal, funds are not collected and all or any collection goes to the Mandir. The group’s main aim is the preaching of the Ramayana, and in doing so they have completed Ramayana now for the fourth time. In a traditional ceremony the reading of the last page is done by Mandali other than the group and this time round the final reading was done by Diva Jyothi Jagrathi Sansthan, with Sanjeev Sharma (pictured below) as the main preacher for the night. The pooja ceremony was conducted by

construction site, and now it is a beautiful expansion of the Botanic Gardens. This is another innovative initiative the Legacy Way project is giving back to the community,” Mr Truss said. “Features like this are part of the reason this project has won multiple international awards, including one for environmental mitigation.” Federal Member for Ryan Jane Prentice joined local
residents and other community representatives in the Botanic Gardens today to celebrate the opening of the expansion. “Not only is this project changing the face of Brisbane’s commute, but it is adding another dimension to one of Brisbane’s leading tourist attractions, the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens,” Mrs Prentice said. Modi-nomics awakens India’s investment potential JOHN Pereira is passionate about opportunities for investing in India. After decades watching and waiting for India to fulfil its economic potential, Indian-born Fund Manager John Pereira believes there has never been a more exciting time than right now. Following an early childhood spent in Mumbai during the 1960s, where the family maintains a home, Pereira was raised and educated in Melbourne before a long career in investment banking, funds management and law. Bringing India’s investment opportunities to Australia is a lifelong goal, which he is preparing to do with India Fund Limited. Pereira says few Australians understand the vastness of India’s recent changes, and wants the Australian government to make a free trade agreement with India a top priority. What’s different about India’s economic resurgence this time? The reason it’s different this time is PM Modi. The mandate for change is huge, and already we’ve seen a massive turnaround regarding foreign investment. The world wants to do business with India. India has seen a pick-up of investment, in its share markets, in business confidence and in GDP growth – the World Bank and the IMF both forecast that India will overtake China this year to become the world’s fastest growing major economy. Is there a risk that progress will stall? Modi’s party, the BJP, has a big majority and has won seven out of the last eight state elections, which gives us confidence that his direction is sustainable. To understand Modi you need to consider his track record as Chief Minister of Gujarat. Over 12 years under Modi Gujarat’s GDP reached 10.3% year-on-year. It was a standout state in India known for free market liberalism with little government intervention. This period of what they call “Modi-nomics”, was transformative and showed he can get things done. What are some defining features of “Modi-nomics”? Cutting red tape, clamping down on corruption and opening India up to business are the main themes. The changes are farreaching – already many billions in foreign investment is going into infrastructure. And they have made progress regarding ease of

doing business – from May 2015 you will only need to lodge a single form to incorporate a business in India. Do Australian-based investors have many options to invest in India? There are currently very few options to share in India’s growth from Australia, which is a shortfall we hope to address with India Fund Limited. As India takes the mantle of world’s fastest-growing economy it will be harder to ignore – in fact most of the rest of the world are already over there! Australia has been a little slower to catch on. That’s changing but I was disappointed to see our government does not think a free trade agreement with India is possible this year. Why is now a better time to invest in India than the past? I’ve always passionately believed that India will have its moment, and have watched its progress closely for a long time. I’ve seen a few false starts. But I’ve never seen such a strong direction as now. The response on the investment markets, and globally, has been incredible. Most Australian investors have no exposure to the world’s fastest growing economy at all – the time is right for a dedicated allocation. ‘Geeta at a Glance’ with Swami Swaroopanada, Chinmaya Mission By Anushree Balachandran SWAMI Swaroopananda enthralled the spiritual seekers of Brisbane over five days, between the 21st and 25th of April, on the topic ‘Geeta at a Glance’. The Bhagvad Geeta is an extensive text that provides guidelines for practical living and gaining permanent happiness in the materialistic and ever changing world of ours. By no means is it an easy feat to cover the contents of this text and capture its full breadth and depth in five days. However, Swamiji captured the essence of the Geeta in a refreshingly new light. He broke it down into three clusters of six chapters each, the first of which describes the man in general, the next cluster defines the infinite God while the third abolishes the duality between man and God and unites the two into one. The scene was set on the first day by describing the despondency of Arjuna. Using contemporary examples that appealed to the audience from a range of backgrounds and age groups, Swamiji identified and isolated the Arjuna in each and every one of us. He pointed out that we are all escapists, who in the middle of our responsibilities (likened to the Kurukshetra battlefield), find reasons to run away or refuse to accept the duties entrusted to us. By this, he highlighted the importance and relevance of Krishna’s advice to Arjuna in the Geeta, especially in the lives of youngsters, who these days have a multitude of responsibilities as did Arjuna in the Mahabharatha. The content of the second day’s talks focused on Karma yoga and how one should act in the world of responsibilities and duties. Unlike popular belief of Karma yoga being just action without attachment to results, Swamiji delved into the depths of it. He pointed out that yoga is disunion from pain, work that is done efficiently and with equanimity and knowledge of the mind as described in chapters 3 to 5 of the Geeta. Action performed in this spirit in the present moment without regrets of the past and anxiety of the 18 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, June, 2015

future and where it is devoted to a higher purpose rather than just the selfish self is Karma yoga. Swamiji then explained that man is essentially the doer of actions or the person with responsibilities. He has been equipped with a body, a mind and an intellect with which he can perform action and thereby exhaust his vasanas and desires. He must not mistake himself to be the equipment but must train them to function under his control and complete the tasks at hand rather than seek to escape from them. Swamiji then went on to explain that God is the infinite. Chapter 10 of the Geeta describes in great detail the extent of Krishna’s presence in all of the components of the cosmos. He is the cause and also the result. He is imperishable and exists outside the realm of time. Subsequently in www.indiantimes.com.au
Chapter 11 Krishna reveals his effulgent, all-pervading universal form, the Vishwaroopa, to Arjuna. With this knowledge Arjuna was able to understand that he is not killing members of his family but is performing his duties as a kshatriya and fighting for the prevalence of Dharma. On the last day of the discourse Swamiji highlighted that we needn’t search for God because he is not a separate entity. Instead, we should aspire to know God because He is within us. The unity between God and man is created through Yagna (service –that purifies the mind), Tapas (austerity – that masters the mind) and Dana (charity). The Bhagvad Geeta provides a deeper insight into these concepts and one should study it diligently by surrendering to it, adoring its teachings and values and meditating upon its lessons. Every moment of interaction with Swamiji - be it a walk or a small talk; be it breakfast, lunch or dinner - was nothing short of a practical class on Vedanta for the spiritual seekers. Swamiji constantly kept giving various lessons – lessons on ego, desires, expectations, the influence these have on our lives and how to handle oneself when these are shattered (which they anyway will be because they are false). Swamiji constantly kept reiterating through the week that the human body / mind / intellect equipment is not the decider or the doer. Narayana is the master planner and the master executer. The ego can wish all it wants but what prevails is the will of Narayana! The kids too got a chance to listen to the stories from Mahabarata and learn various virtues from the sacred Bhagvad Geeta with Br. Gopal Chaitaniya who simultaneously held the Bala Yagna during the 5 days. Refer to the flyer on page 46 for the upcoming events of the mission. Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir progress report
• Steady progress at Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir with outside walls now completed, waiting for the roof structure to begin.
NORTH Mclean, Vishnu Maya Mandir continues to make significant progress with a very ambitious (Vishal) Mandir project situated at 86 Scott Lane, North McLean. The project has come a long with the completion of the exterior walls. The challenge now is to get the roof on and donors are being sought for this mammoth task. The project under the guide full eyes of Dharam Guru Tripathi ji has progressed thus far. The amazing contribution of volunteers like Deepak Kumar, Hemant and Kalpana Naik, Bharat Solanki, Dhiru Bhai Desai and many others who quietly work behind the scenes is recognised. Many volunteers tirelessly offer their services, be it for cooking, organising pooja, singing bhajans, preparing marketing material for all upcoming functions. The works progressed from accruing the land to seeking the building approval, then the ground works, footings and piers, the pouring of the large floor slab, erecting the side walls, land fill with associated earth works and plumbing works. Every Sunday the weekly Bhandara takes place from 4pm onwards, the Bhajan recital is by many local and emerging artists followed by the very insightful religious discourse by Dharam Guru Tripathi Ji. Weekly Bhandara dinners are sponsored by separate devotees. Under the spiritual guidance of Dharam Guru Tripathi ji all volunteers all the volun-

teers have made their valuable contributions of their time and resources. Monetary and in kind donations have enabled the project to fruition without a traditional committee structure, which has been a blessing as there is no power struggle for position. According to Dharam Guru Tripathi Ji a temple thrives on devotion, strong religious belief, selfless service and conviction minus egos. Any devotee going to any place of worship is not interested in who the president is or who is in the committee, a devotee’s connection is with the supreme lord and his or her motive is spiritual liberation. Dharam Guru Tripathi Ji says, this your Mandir please come forward and support the cause and take ownership with any official title, this will be the rue path to spiritual liberation. We shared an illuminating discussion on a range of issues affecting the Indian diaspora in Australia including education and employment opportunities, the challenges of social inclusion, and opportunities for India and Australia in the Asian Century. I look forward to continuing a productive relationship with His Excellency and participating in several upcoming events of interest, including a visiting Indian Parliamentary Goodwill Delegation next week in Canberra. I am most confident the India-Australia relationship will be well-served under Mr Suri’s leadership.

Nine ways to skin a CityCat for #teambne AN eye-catching maroon and yellow CityCat decked out in a Queensland Firebirds livery glided up and down the Brisbane River on 3 June, as the Lord Mayor Graham Quirk launched the 21st addition to the CityCat fleet. Cr Quirk said the new vessel, named Gilwunpa after Nundah would provide a significant boost to the city’s public transport system. “In 2013-14 more than six million people accessed Council’s ferry network for commuting and sightseeing, and by 30 June the fleet will service 25 terminals covering a distance of 21 kilometres from Northshore Hamilton through to UQ St Lucia,” he said. “This 25 metre-long vessel finalises Council’s $6.25 million commitment to deliver two brand new CityCats by mid2016 as part of our drive to keep Brisbane moving.” Gilwunpa’s exterior depicts the Queensland Firebirds colours and logo, and is the first of nine vessels to sport a new wave of decorative skins, as part of Council’s Team Brisbane campaign. “The new, vibrant designs will depict teams such as the Queensland Bulls, Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Firebirds, Queensland Reds, Brisbane Lions, Brisbane Roar, and Brisbane International Tennis,” he said. Cr Quirk said that next financial year, he would revitalise eight first-generation CityCats as part of a $1.1 million commitment to be delivered through the 2015/16 budget to be delivered on 17 June. “Our iconic CityCats are an essential part of the city’s integrated public transport system, providing residents and visitors with effective and sustainable travel options that reduce congestion on our roads, and shape Brisbane as a safe and accessible city,” he said. “This will extend the working life of these vessels by a further 10 years, on top of almost two decades already served. “As each CityCat completes its re-life program, it will be wrapped in a unique skin
portraying each of the city’s sporting teams, capturing our love of sport and reflecting Team Brisbane.” Cr Quirk said Gilwunpa brought the total number of vessels in Council’s river transport fleet to 30 following the launch of Nardha in October 2014, and would be unique amongst the fleet as it sports the eye-catching Queensland Firebirds wrap. To celebrate Gilwunpa and the announcement of the re-life program, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk joined Queensland Firebirds Captain Laura Geitz to officially launch the Gilwunpa this morning. “Sport is an integral part of our identity, so we are delighted to display the iconic Queensland Firebirds livery on Gilwunpa to show the world how proud we are of our prestigious sporting heritage,” he said. “This striking skin is a fitting tribute to our state’s powerhouse netball team, the Mission Queensland Firebirds who have an outstanding record of achievements within the ANZ Championship.” Queensland Firebirds captain Laura Geitz thanked Council for the opportunity to profile the sport and recognise the team’s achievements. “This is a wonderfully visual way to showcase the Queensland Firebirds to the broader community, residents and visitors to Brisbane. We thank the Lord Mayor and Brisbane City Council for launching this new CityCat and recognising our team and Netball,” Geitz said. “So far in the ANZ Championship season we have 10 straight wins under our belt, hold the Challenge Trophy and sit on top of the Australian Conference Ladder so it has been an amazing season. “We are now focused on bring the Championship trophy home to Queensland as we head into the Australian Conference Final this Sunday June 7 at the Brisbane Convention Centre at Boondall.” For more information about Council’s ferry fleet visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 3403 8888.

The Milni (meeting) of the procession was held in the in the expansive lawn gardens next to the jetty. The outdoor setting resembled a Royal feast, after the Milni the wedding ceremony took place on the beach gazebo, the Pundit ji did a wonderful job of conducting the wedding to Vedic rituals. After the wedding it was time for a quick costume change in readiness for the reception. The reception once again was in the grand Ballroom, it was a complete different but elegant setting, the decorations complimented by the creative lighting and set the mood for an extravagant and lavish reception, and another band was playing here. After a few traditional speeches the wedding cake was cut and the band encouraged everyone to join on the dance floor. The dinner spread resembled a Royal feast, everyone partied till late and wished the newlyweds all the best for their future wedded life together. Next morning was the departure brunch in the main dining area, like everything this royal treatment was coming to end and it was time to leave with the wonderful memories of the Royal Affair.

GOPIO News...... GOPIO Queensland chapter, as usual has been progressively active with community activities. 14th May saw the commemorative function in the memory of the First Indian to have arrived on the shores of Fiji Islands. The function known as Girmit Diwas is now observed globally on 14th of May. For GOPIO Queensland this was the second Girmit Diwas to be held at Queensland Multicultural Centre in Kangaroo point. The keynote speaker this year was Mr Uthkat (Bob Naiker) who gave a detailed history of Fiji Islands, going well before the arrival of Indians on 14th May 1879. The program included the keynote speech and an audio presentation by Umesh Chandra who was the coordinator of Girmit Diwas and is the GOPIO International Coordinator for Oceania region. Last year Umesh had screened the video of the Kolkata memorial inauguration in which Gopio had played a major role, this year Umesh screened the video taken during the inauguration of the Trinidad memorial, this was very well received as the speech of GOPIO Trinidad president Mrs Ena Maharaj was very powerful, she described the hardship faced by the “Girmitiyas” in Trinidad, which is pretty much the same scenario as in Fiji, Mauritius etc. After the presentations and keynote speech the main speaker together with invited guests laid a wreath at the picture of the Kolkata memorial. Everyone present was given an opportunity to pay floral tribute. Light refreshments were served in the foyer area. Apart from Mr Uthkat Naiker other dignitaries included; Honorary Counsel for India in Queensland Mrs Archana Singh, Anti Discrimination Commissioner Kevin Cox, Mr Vijendra Kumar former editor of Fiji Times and last year’s keynote speaker,

GOPIO Queensland’s Creative thinking business seminar
GOPIO Queensland’s ATO Tax seminar
FOR a second year in a row GOPIO Queensland was chosen to facilitate the ATO seminar in Brisbane, ATO has recognised the strengths and community connect of GOPIO Queensland and hence partners with GOPIO Queensland in organising these seminars, last year the topic was “superan24 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, June, 2015
nuation” this year the seminar was titled “Reinventing the ATO”. Around 65 people registered for the seminar held at Queensland Multicultural Centre Kangaroo Point, on a very cold Brisbane night that was quite impressive. Loc Trinh spoke on how his diversity team connects with diverse community especially the new and emerging communities, ATO plans to disseminate the vital information out to the diverse communities via these forums. The second part of the seminar focused on the welcome changes being made by ATO in its dealing with everyone. The challenging new world of digital technology demands all forward thinking organisations to keep abreast with the ever changing environment.
Question and answer session was quite popular and there was a good exchange of ideas and suggestions including making the business portal more user friendly, which currently is very confusing especially when you upgrade your computer or every time Java releases an update. The seminar concluded with refreshments being served.

UNDER the leadership of Robin Jaggessar, GOPIO Queensland’s Business council is flourishing, one of the business seminars was a leadership workshop on creative thinking. Pele Ramdhani, a corporate trainer, coach and business development manager of Good Life Health Clubs moderated the sessions. The panel included Yousuf Akikhan from Financial first, Umesh Chandra from Chantex Pty Ltd and Shyam Das from Target Travel and Yours and Robin Jaggessar from Intech Institute of technology. Pele facilitated the seminar quite well, he ran in two sessions the first session was a break out session, which involved a team building exercise, the second session was the panel discussion where by each of the panelists first gave a short talk each on their companies and then the floor was opened to questions and answers. The interactive nature of the seminar kept everyone involved and connected. Overall a very successful seminar with good attendance. In the usual GOPIO hospitality refreshments were served to all. Australian Indian Radio welcomes new presenters SINCE its launch (AIR) Australian Indian Radio has increased its listeners steadily, so much so that the server nearly choked, our software is capable of handling 999 concurrent listeners . The temporary bottleneck was due to Telstra copper internet , NBNCO has been installed and is due to be connected any day this will give us a 10/10 internet, what that means is that we will be able to download and upload at 10/10, currently Telstra’s capability is 10/01. We could have opted to go to an American server, whereby we upload to that server and everyone connects to that, that would be a cheaper option but it will compromise the audio streaming quality and we did not want that, quality was more important to us. We do have the option of dial to listen service which basically works on the same principal we stream to their server and everyone dials into their virtual number to listen to the our broadcast. In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful THE SWEETNESS OF RAMADHAAN WITH IT’S MERCY, FORGIVENESS & FREEDOM FROM THE FIRE OF JAHANNAM By ML.M.NAWAAZ ASHRAFI THE Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) has said: It (Ramadhan) is the month, whose beginning is mercy, its middle, forgiveness and its end, emancipation from the fire (of hell) — Bihar al-Anwar, Vol.: 93, Pg.: 342 Ashra is an Arabic word which means “ten.” In Islamic terminology, the 1st Ashra refers to the first 10 days of the Holy month of Ramadan. The second Ashra refers to the middle 10 days (11-20), and the third Ashra refers to the last set of 10 days (21-30). The first Ashra focuses on the servants plea for Allah’s Mercy. The middle Ashra of Ramadan is the time for Maghfirah; the time to wash off our sins. Ramadan is the month to seek Forgiveness and repentance. Having witnessed the Mercy of Allah (SWT) by thanking Him for all that He has granted us, by being good to everyone and keeping ourselves at peace, we realize our relationship with our Rabb, and our role and duties towards Him. This is the time when Allah’s (SWT) Mercy is at its peak, and it is best to utilize this opportunity by imploring Allah to forgive our sins. The Prophet(S) is reported to have said: “Do repent in this month to Allah for your sins, and supplicate with raised hands at the time of prayer as these are the best times, during which Allah AlMighty looks at his servants with mercy. Allah answers if they supplicate, responds if they call, grants if He is asked, and accepts if they entreat. O People! You have made your conscience the slave of your desires. Make it free by invoking Allah for forgiveness. Your back may break from the heavy load of your sins, so prostrate (sajda) yourself before Allah, for long intervals, and make this load lighter.” We are required to reflect on these elements in these days of Repentance even more than any other days and this is the time we seek forgiveness and make amendments for our mistakes, never intending to do them again. Do Tauba repeatedly, constantly, and sincerely for Allah loves Tauba, and especially during this Ashra Allah loves to forgive and loves him who seeks forgiveness. Forgive your brothers in Islam, and accept them as friends, and show no ill-treatment or disrespect to others. The Prophet(S) continued and said: “O’ People! Anyone who during this month cultivates good manners, will walk over the Sirat (bridge to Paradise) on the day when feet will tend to slip. For anyone who during this month eases the workload of his servants, Allah will make easy his accounting, and for anyone who does not hurt others during this month, Allah will safeguard him from His wrath on the Day of Judgment.” DUA: May Allah guide us on Siraat-e Mustaqeem, and grant us the taufeeq to utilize this merciful and ever so forgiving moments of the Most Holiest of Months. May Allah accept our sujood o qayaam and tauba, for indeed His mercy prevails over His wrath, and indeed we are sinners in dire need of that mercy. Aameen.
Maximize your last 10 days of Ramadan...The significance of lailatul Qadr (The night of Decree) The importance of Lailatul Qadr is great since Holy Quran was sent down in this night. The Muslims who find Lailatul Qadr should stay up and pray whole night out of faith and hoping for reward from Allah. As to the importance of Laylatul Qadr (the night of Decree), it is better than a thousand months. Allah almighty says in the Holy Quran: “verily! We have sent it (Quran) down in the Night of Decree (Lailatul-Qadr). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (i.e. Gabriel) by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees, Peace! until the appearance of dawn.” (Al-Qadr 97: 1-5)
How should we observe LaylatulQadr: 1. The prophet (P.B.U.H) used to stay up and pray on Lailatul-Qadr so it is prescribed to stay up and pray whole night. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Whoever stands in (Prayer) in Lailatul-Qadr out of Eemaan and seeking reward then his previous sins are forgiven.” (Bukhari) 2. It is prescribed to supplicate a great in Lailatul Qadr. It is reported from Aisha (R.A): “O Messenger of Allah! What if I knew which night Lailatul-Qadr was, then what should I say in it?” He said: “Say: Allaahumma innaka ‘affuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee.” (O Allah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).” (at-Tirmidhi) 3. For better nutrition, add this secret ingredient to your salad ADDING eggs to a salad with a variety of raw vegetables is an effective method to improve the absorption of carotenoids, which are fat-soluble nutrients that help reduce inflammation, a research has found. "Eating a salad with a variety of colourful vegetables provides several unique types of carotenoids, including beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene. And the lipid contained in whole eggs enhances the absorption of all these carotenoids," said Wayne Campbell, professor of nutrition science at Purdue University in the US. Jung Eun Kim, postdoctoral researcher in Purdue University added, "Most people do not eat enough vegetables in their diets, and at the same time, people are consuming salad dressings that have less fat or are fatfree. Our research findings support that people obtained more of the health-promoting carotenoids from raw vegetables when cooked whole eggs were also consumed." Eggs, a nutrient-rich food containing essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids and B vitamins, may be used to increase the nutritive value of vegetables, Kim said.
In the study, 16 participants consumed a raw mixed-vegetable salad with no eggs, a salad with one and a half eggs, and a salad with three eggs at different times. All salads were served with three grams of canola oil. The second salad had 75 grams of scrambled whole eggs and the third 150 grams of scrambled whole eggs. The absorption of carotenoids was 3.8-fold higher when the salad included three eggs compared to no eggs. The study used scrambled eggs to make sure the participants consumed both the yolk and egg whites. This research was published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. HT
Vedic view of life... THERE have been, from the earliest times, two schools of thought, regarding man’s outlook on life. There are those who believe in enjoying life to the full. For those people the only object in life is to eat, drink and be merry and their attitude towards life finds a very clear expression in the saying that man is rather a long-living animal with great powers of enjoyment, if he does not deliberately forego them. At the other extreme stand those men and women to whom the world in all emptiness, vanity and deceit. For these people material life has no charm. They believe it to be a source of positive misery and, therefore, escape from it is the essential step towards salvation. The presence of pain cannot be denied. But we cannot subscribe to the view that the whole world is felling miserable. Had the world been entirely painful, nobody should have felt a liking for it. As a matter of fact, the world is not exclusively painful. It has both pleasure as well as pain and the former exceeds the latter. That is why everybody likes to continue here, however adverse the con-

ditions may be under which he be placed. As a rule man always chooses pleasure and has no inclination for pain. The Veda, therefore adopts a realistic view of the world. Looking more closely into the matter it will be seen that though there is some truth in both the views, they reveal only one side of the picture and, therefore, partial truth. The whole truth, according to the Veda consists neither in the denial of the world and its objects (created by God so that man may benefit from them) nor in their enjoyment by possession, but by enjoying in renunciation. The Vedic view is successful synthesis of the two extremes which may be summed up as enjoyment followed by renunciation. All civilisations in the past in general, our own civilisation in particular, have tried to evolve and materialise this idea in the forms of religious or social www.indiantimes.com.au
institutions. Ashrania-dharma of the Vedic Aryans is a well-considered attempt in this direction. Any person practising this Dharma will desire no more than what he can get justly, use soberly, distribute cheerfully and leave contentedly. He will be careful in warming his hands before the fire without burning them. The way to escape from misery is not to turn our back on the world, but to follow the divine law of right conduct, as advised by the Vedas. The Vedic view is a practical synthesis of the two seemingly opposing theories. Of course, the enjoyment should be free and true enjoyment of the spirit, and not of the satisfaction of the sense based on the impact of the external world on the sensory organs. Similarly, renunciation also is not the rejection of the world with its objects but renunciation of worldly desires and ambitions. If a man had only acted in the light of the teachings of the Veda, he should have realised that the worldly goods, which he is trying to possess physically to a limitless extent, are not
his. He can use them but cannot claim them as his own. If he had known that behind all material existence there is a universal spirit which permanently controls it, things would certainly have been different. But the most tragic part of it all is that man does not learn this lesson was from his own accumulated experience embodied in human history. If there is one lesson which is potent on the pages of the history of every nation, it is this that no individual, nor any nation, however powerful at one time, has even been successful in holding the world in its possession for all times. To me it appears that the only lesson which man has learnt from history is that man has learnt nothing from history. Man may be a social animal but the last part of life road has to be walked in a single file. Health Beauty Wellbeing The long road back from Stroke survivors the road trauma, the hidden real winners of road toll Improvers initiative JOACHIM ‘Yogi’ Pieters will spend his daughter’s fourth birthday today (6 June) in a wheelchair, another victim of the carnage on Far Northern roads. It has been almost two weeks since Mr Pieters was involved in a single vehicle accident on his motorbike on the Gillies Range Road and he faces a long road to recovery. Despite it all, Mr Pieters considers himself lucky. “I know that if there had been a car coming the other way when I got thrown I’d be dead,” he said. “I’ve been riding bikes for 20 years, I know the road really well, it was a clear day, I was wearing all my safety gear but I just made one mistake and this is what can happen.” This story has become an all too familiar one across the Far North in 2015, with the road toll rising to 20 and the Queensland Ambulance Service responding to 500 traffic crashes. On the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, Cairns Hospital has joined forces with the Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Police Service to plead with motorists to be safe on the region’s roads. Cairns Hospital has seen 209 people (as at 28 May) at the Emergency Department so far as a result of motor vehicle accidents in 2015 with more than a third of those being considered serious cases (Category 1 and 2 patients). Manager Cass Abell said road trauma victims were among the most critical patients the department treated. Queensland Ambulance Service Senior Operations Supervisor Kevin Morgan said traffic crashes affect not only those directly involved but the whole community. “Our paramedics see the devastating consequences of road traffic crashes every day, attending horrific crash scenes and treating injured patients,” he said. “They also witness the wave effect that one car crash can have, flowing onto friends and family and members of the community who may have known the people involved. “Before you get in your car, think of the consequences your actions may have on your family and friends and emergency services staff that may need to treat you. “Pay attention, wear a seatbelt, don’t drive tired or affected by alcohol or drugs and abide by the road rules to reduce your risk of a traffic crash.” Acting Superintendent Rolf Straatemeier said the carnage on roads in the Far North this year was nothing short of madness. He has urged drivers to reappraise how they operate on the roads to ensure there isn’t more unnecessary pain and tragedy caused in crashes. Mr Straatemeier said long weekends typically saw higher instances of traffic crashes due to a higher volume of traffic on the region’s roads.
STROKE survivors will soon have access to a revolutionary rehabilitation device thanks to a Gold Coast Health staff innovation competition and the goodwill of the Health Minister. The Sensory-Motor Active Rehabilitation Training Arm (SMART arm) is a portable, non-robotic device that enables brain injury survivors with upper limb weakness to drive recovery of their arm, allowing survivors the opportunity to regain functional use of their arm and hand. At a cost of almost $80,000, the technology isn't cheap but the Gold Coast Health Rehabilitation service can now order one after making a compelling pitch at The Improvers, the annual event where staff compete for a share of up to $280,000 to turn their bright ideas into reality. Having initially failed to win the $100,000 prize category, Senior Occupational Therapists Ashlea Walker and Sonya Shrimpton were blown away when guest judge and Health Minister Cameron Dick announced a special Ministerial Award to fund the initiative. "We anticipate this device is going to make a huge difference to the lives of stroke survivors as it provides access to world-class therapy that will enhance their capacity for meaningful functional recovery of their arm," Ms Walker said. "We're also fortunate to have a relatively new Occupational Therapy outpatient rehabilitation service so both our inpatients and outpatients can benefit from the SMART arm. For the Health Minister to recognise

the potential of the device was incredible and we’re thrilled Gold Coasters will soon have access to such technology." As well as purchasing $80,000 of SMART arm equipment, the Rehabilitation service has secured $20,000 to enable completion of associated collaborative research, reinforcing Gold Coast Health’s commitment to establishing itself as a leading research institution. In Australian trials, the SMART arm has already shown a 50 per cent improvement in patients arm function in a four-week period compared to nine weeks of a standard rehabilitation program. Mr Dick said he was proud to commit funding for the SMART arm initiative, which he noted was a Queensland-ownedand-made device. "This technology will help countless patients regain arm and hand use and that is a wonderful thing," he said. "I was amazed by the standard of presentations on show at The Improvers and I particularly want to thank the Gold Coast Health executive for listening to people who know best how we should run our hospitals and health services – our amazing staff." The Final of the 2015 Improvers was held at Gold Coast University Hospital, with five winners and three other finalists securing more than $350,000 in combined funding. Health Beauty Wellbeing From test cricketer to Purushottam Month Christian evangelist Submitted by Sundar Gopal Das
By Peter Lane Rai INDIANS love cricket. Travel anywhere in India and you will see men and boys playing cricket whether they are in the foothills of the Himalayas, a slum in Delhi or a beach in Kerala. Peter Pollock (pictured) born in South Africa in 1941 was his country’s leading Test Cricket bowler between 1962-70 taking 116 wickets in 28 test matches. Though he never played cricket against India, he did play exhibition games with Indian cricket stars such as Farook Engineer, the Nawab of Pataudi, Bishen Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar and Shandra Shekar. Lately, when he visited India as a South African cricket convenor he found the INdian cricket raternity most respectful. After retiring from cricket he entered another career in 1981 - he bacame a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and is now a full time Christian evangelist. In May he held meetings in Brisbane where I had a chance to ask a few questions. Do people love sport more than God? I’m not sure they do but as many do like heroes and teams, as they can associate with winning and losing, it is easy to be obsessed with them. This a world wide reality. In fact, a lot of people I meet really love God more than sport. Are people hungry for God? Well those who come to my meetings are but i’m not sure about other people who don’t come. It is their choice and of course there are consequences about not following God in your life. I mean, where will you spend eternity?
You have been visiting Australia since 1991 - what do you observe about our country? Well people are concerned about a world that is getting worse economically, soically and spiritually. They are trying to find answers to life anyway they can, some times the wrong way through drugs and sex and so don’t get the right answers. For myself, I found meaning and purpose in life through the Lord Jesus Christ. What influence did cricket have on your life? It meant everything so I can never repay cricket enough but it was only a phase in my life to later give me a platform to give back so much more to life. My son Sean also captained South Africa. What is your passion in life now? Well since Jesus changed me in 1981 by showing me the real meaning of life my passion now is being an evangelist. There is no greater privilege in life than to serve the Lord and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My cricket fame is nothing in comparison!
Do not neglect influenza By Thilliar Varnakulasingham INFLUENZA is a highly contagious respiratory infection. It is spread by air-borne droplets, person to person contact or contact with contaminated items. It is almost impossible to prevent it from spreading to the family members living under the same roof. Seasonal influenza is an acute viral infection that spreads easily from person to person. Influenza vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection. Antiviral drugs are available for treatment. However, influenza viruses can develop resistance to the drugs. Influenza was responsible for the most devastating plague in human history that swept around the world in 1918. It killed an estimated 20-50 million people worldwide. In Australia, dozens of deaths and thousands of hospitalizations due to influenza are recorded each year. However, many influenza cases go unrecognized or unreported. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at higher risk of influenza and its complications than other Australians. In some countries, like New Zealand, the immunization is free for anyone aged 65 and over and to anyone, including children, suffering from heart diseases, stroke and related diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, on-going renal disease, most cancers, conditions affecting the immune system and neuromuscular and central nervous system diseases. WHO recommends annual vaccination for: pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy; children aged six months to five years; elderly individuals 65 or over; individuals with chronic medical conditions and healthcare workers. Because colds and flu are caused by viruses, they cannot be cured with antibiotics. If your doctor assesses your symptoms and believes you have a viral illness, you will not be prescribed an antibiotic. Symptoms of influenza include high fever and chills, cough, body aches and pains, headache, sore throat and fatigue. Complications of influenza include pneu-
THERE is an additional month in the Indian calendar this year. This additional month is added to the calendar approximately every 32 months in order to tally the solar and lunar months. This extra month is called Adhimasa or Purushottam Masa (month) and this year it is between June 17 and July 16. How was it called Purushottam Month? Previously many have discarded this extra month, considering it abominable and giving it a name like malamasa (impure month) and did not perform any holy or purifying activities during this additional month. The personification of this month was sad that no one was performing any devotional activities during this month and he appeared before Sri Krishna in Goloka. After hearing about the distress of Adhimasa, Sri Krishna’s heart melted and He spoke thus: “Just as I am celebrated in this world by the name Purushottama (the topmost Person), similarly, this Adhimasa too will be renowned in the world by the name Purushottama. Now I offer all My qualities to this month. Becoming like Me, from today onwards, this Adhimasa is the monarch of all the other months, and is the most worshipable and most adored in the world. All other months are sakama (they will grant worldly desires), but this month is niskama. Anyone who performs spiritual activities this month, either without any desires or with desires will have all their karmas (reactions) burnt and then they will achieve Me.” (Chapter 31 of the Naradiya Purana) Activities in the Purushottam Month Religious activities such as weddings, fire sacrifices, or worship before entering a new home or starting a new business etc or activities which give pious or material (eg wealth) results are generally not performed during this month. However this month is very powerful for performing spiritual or transcendental activities and results in greater benefits than spiritual activities performed in the other months. Many people go for pilgrim-
age to Jagannath Puri (also known as Purushottam Dham) during this month Sri Krsna is the presiding deity of Purushottama and His worship is the obligatory activity of this month. Devotees usually take a vow of performing extra spiritual activities such as kirtana (singing of hymns), reading of scriptures and fasting from certain food ingredients in this month for the pleasure of the Lord. However one should observe those vows that can be maintained easily. It is advised that during this month one should not uselessly discuss worldly literature or mundane poetry or worldly sense enjoyment and especially one should not criticise others. Sri Tulasi is very dear to Lord Krishna so one can perform tulasi parikrama daily. Without the mercy of Tulasi, Vrinda-devi, one cannot enter in the realm of pure bhakti. Daily reading of Srimad Bhagavatam or Bhagavad Gita is also recommended. Especially if there is opportunity to listen to the holy texts from advanced devotees. Now, betrayal goes digital with smartphones monia, sinusitis and, bronchitics. There are many myths regarding influenza. Some people consider that they can get influenza from the vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause influenza. It is free from live viruses. Even if you get flu after the immunization, it may make it much milder attack than you would otherwise have had. Even if you are fit and active, immunization is still the best protection against influenza. You may consult your GP. The National Influenza Immunization Strategy Group advises travelers to be vaccinated before going overseas, especially to the tropics where influenza is a year-round problem. Influenza usually lasts for one to two weeks. If you get flu, go to bed and keep yourself warm, drink plenty of fluid such as vegetable broth, orange juice, goat milk or water. It is advisable to avoid alcohol, fatty foods and cigarette., Eat low fat fibre foods which are easy to digest such as rolled oats, porridge, semolina, sago, tapioca, crackers and biscuits. You may take one or two paracetamol tablets every four hours and sneeze into a tissue and discard the tissue immediately to limit the spread of infection. You must wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. It is essential to avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you get flu, stay home from work. When the temperature becomes normal, take things easily for a few days. If symptoms persist or become worse, visit your doctor.

IS YOUR partner and his or her smartphone in a committed relationship? Or is their social networking addiction taking a toll on your relationship? While you seldom see people without their mobiles, experts say that this may not bode well for your relationship. A study by an online shopping site revealed that 38% of people under 25 who are in a relationship have spied on their partner's digital messages. The study also showed that only 10% of those who snooped got the goods, while the others were left feeling sheepish. So, before you lay your hands on your partner's phone, here are some tips to spot a digital cheater: *Lost in translation: When your partner is

laughing or pondering over a text and yet, not making any effort to let you in, it creates friction. And if they make no effort to not shut you out, their attentions may lie somewhere else. *Putting up defenses: The guilt usually forces a cheater into being defensive. They may avoid discussions about how much time is spent on the phone and may even nitpick your online habits. *Tick-tock texting: If your partner receives texts at all times of the day, including late in the night, it may do you well to confront the situation. *Smart possession: Unnecessary secrecy or mad possessiveness about their phone or laptops is another giveaway. HEY Girls, are you complaining about increasing problem of hair loss and thinning of hair. We found a remedy for this, it is an Onion. Yes Onions are rich in sulphur which is one of the essential nutrients in promoting hair growth. Onions contain many important and essential minerals and vitamins such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. They appear to be particularly useful in hair conditions because of their abilities to promote circulation and decrease inflammation. Hair loss remedies; Onion: Apply freshly-squeezed, raw onion juice directly onto the scalp, massage deep into the scalp and hair roots. Leave on the scalp for about half-an-hour before shampooing. You need one part of onion juice and two parts of water. Moisten your hair, and apply more of the mixture on the roots. Leave for 25-30 minutes. PURUSHARTHA in Hinduism is a religious concept used to specify the four objects of human existence. These objects are essential for living a deserving life. They are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. Religious and spiritual teachers have explained these terms with intricate commentaries and their appropriateness for people of different Varnas and Ashrams. Accomplishing all the four elements of Purushartha is the religious duty of all Hindus. It is human endeavour that makes possible the accomplishment of Purushartha. Hinduism encourages people to act and achieve their objectives. This does not imply negation of divine blessing, which is always sought by religious people to accomplish any of the four objects. Dharma is the first element and relates to acquiring ability to achieve subsequent objectives. It is achieved through education, training, self-study, exercise, endeavour to acquire skills, performing virtuous and religious activities propounded in scriptures, and spiritual and nonspiritual teachers. Realisation of Dharma is based on virtuous intent and harmonious relationship with other individuals, plants, animals and surrounding environment. Dharma also signifies the attainment of religious merits, which are acquired through performing religious rituals, devotion to divine power and many other activities prescribed by scriptures. It should be noted that the scope of Dharma is different for people of different Varnas and Ashrams. In modern age it is up to the individual to determine his best suitable Dharma. Acquiring Dharma or abilities to lead a normal human life is an object of all human societies. This element of Purushartha requires that the education is made available to all people. It is the responsibility of rulers to maintain educational institutions to make young generation educated and worthy citizen. Education includes all disciplines that are essential according to the level of social, technical and spiritual requirements of the community. Artha means wealth. Ancient Hindu sages recognized the importance of wealth and included earning of wealth as an important objective of human life. Importance of wealth remains universal and all persons are encouraged to earn wealth. It may sound contradictory to teachings of some Hindu sects, but the truth of life demonstrates that a wealthy person is esteemed higher than the person without
www.indiantimes.com.au
wealth. It applies to all sections of human society. Wealth includes property, money, followers, disciples and other resources. Certainly other attributes also count but without wealth human life is incomplete. Wealth is also essential in achieving other objects of life. Earning wealth is the responsibility of all persons of a community. Life without wealth becomes miserable. The lack of wealth leads to all types of vices injurious to a civilised society and hence Hindu sages stressed on the need for earning wealth. The volume of wealth required may be different for different person of different Varna at different stage of life. Kama, which means desire, is the third element of Purushartha. Desire is the natural urge to experience the physical and spiritual happiness of life. Having obtained Dharma and Artha a person becomes entitled to and capable of accomplishing his desire. With Kama he maintains a family, performs charitable work, visits sacred places and donates to worthy causes. As a family person he contributes to the continuation of human society. Kama or enjoying life is not only one’s privilege but is a duty. A blissful life makes the community happy, contributes to scientific and technical development and to wellbeing of the community as a whole. The desires may be different for different persons and it is up to individuals to determine their priorities. The last element of Purushartha is the Moksha or liberation. Liberation from the bondage of life and the cycle of birth and death is an important concept in Hinduism. After achieving other three elements of Purushartha, the attainment of Moksha becomes a natural progression for a fulfilling life. The accomplishment of previous three elements makes the achievement of Moksha easy. According to the traditional Hindu belief a satisfied person can devote his life to spirituality that is considered a pathway to liberation from wearisome world. The concept of Purushartha has universal appeal. People all over the world with different religious beliefs, and social and economic status continue to strive for a better life. In fact it is the virtue of human nature to attempt to accomplish his objectives. By making Purushartha a sacred object Hinduism inspires people to lead a rewarding life. More information on Hinduism will follow in the next edition of BIT.

The mystery of Bet Dwarka: Kingdom of Lord Shri Krishna From Dhaval Vyas Ahmedabad, India ONCE upon a time, in the midst of sea lay a mystical kingdom. The city was home to 900 palaces, all made of gold. This golden city was supposed to have arisen out of the sea on the command of a person who is very much the heart of Hinduism. The story about the city is as much magical as the story of the man who built it. Legends surrounding this mysterious city fascinated poets and scholars for centuries. Poets have described the radiance cast by the island city as spreading over miles in the sea. The personality ruling over this kingdom was none other than Lord Krishna, the charismatic God ruling over the hearts of millions of devotees. Dwarka as the golden city was called, had many ‘Dwaras’ or ‘Gateways’ that were connected to the mainstream land via bridges. Krishna's legendary Dwarka built on the site of an even earlier sacred city, named Kususthali, was a well-planned city with a modern and technologically advanced harbor adjusted to traffic of large entering ships. An advanced society lived there. India's long-lost mythical city, one of the seven holy cities in Hindu India, is a reality. The remains of what has been described as a huge lost city, found by researchers not long ago, may force historians and archaeologists to radically reconsider their view of ancient human history. The ancient city of Dwaraka, situated on the extreme West Coast of Indian territory, occupies an important place in the cultural and religious history of India. The fabulous architectural planning of the Dwaraka temple has attracted tourists from all over the world. The town has association with Lord Krishna, who founded this town by reclaiming 12 yojanas of land from the sea. During its glorious past, Dwaraka was a city of beautiful gardens, deep moats, and several ponds and palaces (Vishnu Purana), but it is believed to have submerged just after the disappearance of
Astrology Aries - March 21 - April 20 The month brings with it its share of highs and lows. Optimism, supportive friends and the influence of good company shall help you sail through the challenging times, predicts Ganesha. You may be in a dilemma, and this confused state of mind may affect your efficiency. Guidance from a good friend, though, will help you take up the right path. Businessmen may need to halt their plans for expansion. On the personal front, emotions shall run high. Nagging and fault finding by someone may cause you irritation. Exchange of harsh words is likely, if you fail to control your temper. Ganesha advises you to ignore the negative vibes. At home, differences with a partner, thankfully, are likely to taper. Arguments over petty issues must be avoided, though. For singles, the month shall be a good time for expressing their feelings. Happy finances will further give you a reason to cheer. Be careful, though, as an aspect of Saturn, over the 2nd House from your Sign may lead to some unplanned family expenses. Health, overall, looks set to remain fine. Towards the month end, career professionals will need to exercise care, or they may miss out on an interesting opportunity. Take special care, if you happen to travel. Taurus - April 21 - May 22 It’s time to pop the golden bubbly and celebrate, as your career seems to be shaping up just the way you may have wanted. With two major benefics, influencing the 10th House of Career for your Sign, you can be sure of even better times ahead. No wonder you feel ecstatic! Business-people shall have the stars in their favour too, promises Ganesha. Ones in sectors related to fashion, beauty and luxury goods may strike gold. However, at all times, avoid being too rude or distrustful. Mercury turns direct from the second week of June, ensuring you rise in your cash reserves. Be careful in monetary matters, though. Ganesha also predicts a minor glitch in the functioning of your business/ set up, due to a major change in the planetary configuration, during mid-June. On the domestic front, happily, socialising and partying may keep you busy like a bee! The phase may turn out to be blissful for singles looking for suitable companions. If married, try to remain open and communicative; stay mature, and be willing to hear your partner out. You may visit an old time friend, in the third week. Travel for work, business or leisure is also on the cards. Take care of your health. Gemini - May 23 - Jun 21 Have confidence in your abilities and keep faith in yourself to take on the professional challenges that the month may have in store for you. Few temporary obstacles may leave you frustrated, but the positive influence of Jupiter shall bail you out. At work, there may be looming deadlines or frayed schedules and nerves, causing you confusions. Ganesha advises you to keep your temper under control, though. Businessmen are likely to enjoy a relatively good phase, especially if they already have a plan of action ready. Also, for many of you, this may be a time to travel, revive old contacts, establish new ones and expand your vistas. Influences of Jupiter and Venus promise further good times, around mid-June. A family reunion, of sorts, is likely, and so is a vacation. Be cautious, though, as there is a possibility of you going overboard while spending, under these happy spells. Also, despite spending heavily on your family's whims, you may seemingly fail to keep everyone happy, which may put you in a bad mood. Relax, as you can't please everyone, says Ganesha. Marital sphere may require some tactful handling, mid-month, when you may be resolving certain pending issues. On the health front, either you or someone in the family may need to be monitored closely for symptoms of a problem.
Lord Krishna. Due to its historical importance and association with the Mahabharata, Dwaraka continues to attract archeologists and historians besides scientists. Sri Krishna killed the demon Kamsa (his maternal uncle) and made Ugrasena (His maternal grandfather) the king of Mathura. Enraged, Kamsa's father-in law, Jarasandha (king of Magadh) together with his friend Kalayavana attacked Mathura 17 times. For the safety of the people, Krishna and the Yadavas decided to move the capital from Mathura to Dwaraka. Sri Krishna and the Yadavas left Mathura and arrived at the coast of Saurashtra. They decided to build their capital in the coastal region and invoked Visvakarma, the deity of construction. However, Visvakarma said that the task could be completed only if Samudradeva, the lord of the sea, provided some land. Sri Krishna worshipped Samudradeva, who was pleased and gave them land measuring 12 yojanas and henceforth, Visvakarma built Dwaraka, a city in gold. Anyone engaged in the devotional service of the Lord is
recommended to live in one of three places: Dwaraka, Mathura or Vrindavana. Because devotional service in these three places is magnified, those who go there to follow principles in terms of instructions imparted in the revealed scriptures surely achieve the same result as obtained during the presence of Lord Sri Krishna. His abode and He Himself are identical, and a pure devotee under the guidance of another experienced devotee can obtain all the results, even at present. Submergence of Dwaraka After Sri Krishna left for His abode and the major Yadava heads were killed in fights among themselves, Dwaraka became submerged in the sea. This is the account given by Arjuna in the Mahabharata: "The sea, which has been beating against the shores, suddenly broke the boundary that was imposed on it by nature. It rushed into the city, coursing through the beautiful city streets, and covered up everything in the city. I saw the beautiful buildings becoming submerged on by one. In a matter of a few moments, it was all over. The sea had now become as placid as a lake. There was no trace of the city. Dwaraka was just a name; just a memory." For more than 5,000 years Dwaraka was treated only like a myth, handed over from one generation to another. The Historical Dwaraka The city of Dwaraka has been under investigation by historians since the beginning of the 20th century. The exact location of this port city has been under debate for a long time. Several literary references, especially from the Mahabharata, have been used to suggest its exact location. Dwaraka is mentioned in the Mahabharata (Mausala Parva) and an appendix to the epic, Harivamsa, refers to the submergence of Dwaraka by the sea. Dwaraka was a city state extending up to Bet Dwaraka (Sankhoddhara) in the north and Okhamadhi in the south. In the east, it extended up to Pindata. The 30 to 40 meter-high hill on the eastern flank of Sankhoddhara may be the Raivataka referred to in the Mahabharata. Continued next issue...
www.ganeshaspeaks.com Cancer - June 22 - July 22 Overall, a satisfactory and good month awaits you, especially for professionals, businesspersons, freelancers and freshers. However, you should make best efforts to attain desired objectives, says Ganesha. The combust Mars may agitate you, diverting your attention from the road to progress. You may feel anxious; some of you may even think of changing your job, as higher-ups might continuously coerce you to improve your performance. The debilitated Moon in conjunction with the retrograde Saturn, though, shall help you calm down. Continue to work dedicatedly, as superiors are likely to reward your strenuous efforts, around the month-end. Financially, there may be some challenging phases, as the Sun and combust Mars are positioned in the 12th House (of Expenses) from your Sign. Extravagant spending and a steep rise in domestic expenses too may land you in a tight spot. Hence, Ganesha advises to expend prudently, as per a designated monthly budget. And, quite happily, things shall get better on this front by the month-end. Saturn will re-enter Scorpio in retrograde mode, around mid-June. This planetary move shall be helpful for the married natives. Singles will also get to spend some romantic moments with their love partner. Health, on the whole, shall not be a bother, unless you suffer from a chronic ailment. Take care, if your chronic illness becomes a tad too nagging. Leo - July 23 - August 22 You may end up being on your toes, for a better part of the month, and thus may be left feeling quite weary. Nonetheless, your enthusiastic approach will help you carry on. Employed ones may remain very busy. Hone your skills, as this will help you handle new assignments with ease. Soon, you shall be pleasantly surprised by the accolades showered by your superior, assures Ganesha. Businesspersons, particularly the ones dealing overseas, might strike profitable deals. Expending some money for advertising will be gainful. Do focus on prestigious clients to build and nurture long-term relations. Freshers applying for jobs are likely to receive positive replies, around mid-June. Overall, things may remain frenzied. Partying and socialising shall bring you the much needed relief. Ones in a steady relationship, may plan to get married. If married, though, your better half may feel disappointed, as you may not be able to spare enough time for him/her. Disagreements and debates with spouse might derail your domestic life. Ganesha advises to meditate and pursue leisure activities to cool down and recharge your batteries. Towards the latter half of the month, your budget may go haywire, as you might expend lavishly and refurbish your residence/workplace. By end of the month, though, things shall be largely sorted in the financial front. Health remains good too. Virgo - August 23 - October 22 You may experience mixed feelings during this month. Keep your temper in check! Ganesha advises you to think twice before speaking, as your bitter speech might have a detrimental effect on personal and professional relations. Extra work and tight time-limits may keep you very busy. And, you might get upset as your co-workers may be tend to be unaccommodating. Yet, continue to work sincerely, asserts Ganesha. This is the right time for business persons to execute their plans to widen their client base. Freelancers shall be delighted on bagging high-worth projects. Freshers might, however, remain confused on receiving multiple job offers. Weigh pros and cons, before taking a final decision. In the financial realm, your expenses may exceed your earnings, as Venus is now positioned in the 12th House from your Sign. Sharp rise in domestic expenditure, extravagant expenses, and donations are also indicated. Try to manage! Home atmosphere shall be congenial. However, you may sometimes behave

selfishly, and disappoint your close ones. Singles might get upset, due to a negative reply from their love partner. Those in a steady relationship, though, may decide to establish a life-long bond. Cough, cold, and minor digestive issues are foreseen. Libra - September 23 - October 22 Major changes in personal and professional life are indicated. Your dedicated efforts shall lead to favourable results. The influence of Mars over your Sign, along with the malefic Rahu positioned therein, may make you aggressive, though. Hence, you should communicate carefully, particularly with your seniors and dear ones. Speak courteously, as your bitter speech may cause rifts, or you may be considered a revolutionist. Career-wise, it shall be a good time for freelancers. Employed ones may remain busy, due to some critical tasks. Anyway, your higher-ups shall soon inspire and reward you for your hard work, so stay motivated. Business persons shall manage to strike lucrative deals. Ganesha also feels that this is the right time to enhance your image. Freshers may be forced to accept unsuitable jobs, and they may do so, in order to gain work experience. Rise in domestic expenses may make you uncomfortable financially. You should, thus, set aside some amount for exigencies. And, don't worry, for your favourable planets shall provide you with several opportunities to increase your earnings. At home, though, discord may keep you stressed. Keep a calm approach. Overall, health shall be satisfactory, but ensure taking time out for meditation and exercise. Scorpio - October 23 - November 21 Expect professional and financial growth, during this month. You might get bored by the daily grind, and this may motivate you to amend your working methods, replacing them with novel strategies. Retrograde Saturn will enter your Sign, during mid-June, helping you see and analyse your shortcomings. And, in due course, you shall work on these. Your fresh outlook will lead to positive results, assures Ganesha. At work, seniors shall appreciate your excellent performance. Yet, you shall prefer to remain modest, instead of blowing your own trumpet. And, that will be a good thing, as this will also put to rest your peers' envy. Business-persons, this month, shall be a happy lot. Freshers trying to secure jobs, though, may have to contend with low-paying options. On the financial front, you will have to be ready for some domestic expenses. You may fall short of funds, around month-end. Anyway, you shall feel relieved on receiving some returns on your past investments. Saturn and Sun are in a Trine aspect. In a certain domain of your life, though, things may not be proceeding as desired, and this may put you in a philosophical mood. Overall, marital life shall be harmonious, and your health shall not give you a cause to worry. Sagittarius - November 22 - December 22 Combust Mars' conjunction with Sun, positioned in an opposition aspect to your Sign may make you more aggressive than usual now. Interference from anyone, particularly in-laws, far off relations or any third party shall irritate you no end, leading to hot debates, maybe even with your beloved. Hence, Ganesha advises you to tactfully handle the situation. Arranging a get-together with family and friends shall help restore the normalcy. Professionally, this shall be a good time for exploring new avenues/ territories, widening customer base, establishing new contacts, and reviving old ones. However, the monetary gains may take their time to come your way. Professionals shall continue to work ardently and think positively, though. Jupiter's positive vibes shall support you amply now, so make the most of this opportune period. Upgrade your skills and adapt to the latest technology to remain competitive. The retrograde Saturn will again enter Scorpio, getting positioned in the 12th House from your Sign. This may lead to a sharp rise in your personal and incidental expenses. Meditate to calm your nerves and remain optimistic. You may also encash some of your

less profitable investments and re-invest the funds in some lucrative schemes. Capricorn - December 23 - January 30 Sometimes change is the only way forward in life. And, this month, you would do well to accept that. On your own, you will tend to concentrate on the grey areas, thinking negatively and getting angry. Do not do that, says Ganesha! Relax, and go with the flow, as it will considerably reduce the pressure. Professionals may face a tough time, owing to the presence of retrograde Mercury and Sun, along with combust Mars. You may be assigned a difficult task, while your superiors shall remain unresponsive. Stay calm and focused, and soon your efforts shall lead to positive outcomes. Businesspersons may have to negotiate aplenty to strike lucrative deals. Freelancers may manage to revive old contacts. On the domestic front too, you shall have to strive hard to maintain harmony, as the Sun and combust and debilitated Mars will be positioned in the 7th House from your Sign. Relations with spouse may become sour. Therefore, Ganesha advises you to calmly resolve things. Singles may be unable to convey their feelings to a love partner. Steep rise in regular expenses may cause further anxiety. Steer clear of legal tussles. Possibility of a sudden injury or respiratory issues cannot be ruled out. Take care! Aquarius - January 21 - February 19 You may remain highly occupied during this month, setting higher goals and seeking newer ways to bagging bigger offers, deals-whatever that works. This feeling will further intensify, as the full Moon gets closer. However, the positive influence of Jupiter shall help you gain clarity and tranquility. Domestic and financial issues top your priority list. You might invest a large amount of money in a new project. However, you may not get the desired outcome immediately, as the Ruler of your Sign Saturn is retrograde, and the Ruler of the 10th House from your Sign (associated with Occupation), Mars is currently combust. Work atmosphere, though, shall be congenial. Continue to work with conviction and dedication. Businesspersons may have to put in extra efforts too. Short-term trips may not be gainful. Ganesha also advises you to avoid giving money or goods on credit. Freelancers and freshers might not get results, as per their expectations. Marital life too may not be hunkydory. It would, thus, be better to compromise and adjust. Singles seeking a love partner may face difficulty, while conveying their feelings. Tight deadlines and monetary issues may adversely affect your health. Those prone to hypertension should remain cautious. ecovery of money is likely to raise your cash reserves. Pisces - February 20 - March 20 Balancing personal and professional life shall be easier for you this month. And, your positive attitude will lead to rapid growth. Businesspersons shall be delighted on recovering some old and bad debts. This is also a good time to promote your brand and increase your reputation. However, Ganesha advises to avoid giving goods on credit or lending money. Your optimistic outlook and remarkable performance will be appreciated by your seniors and subordinates. You can also expect to move ahead onto the path of financial progress. Freelancers shall bag highly profitable assignments. Freshers too will get suitable jobs. You shall also wish to spend more time with your betterhalf, as the Moon will be positioned in the 7th House from your Sign. Both of you will reminisce about the good old days, and this will revive the spark of passion in your marital life. However, relations with other family members may remain strained. Home renovation and outings with family, though, may help you restore cordial relations. Subsequently, your monthly budget may go haywire. Attending a religious ceremony or an auspicious occasion around mid-month is foreseen. Take care of your health, though. Good time for love and relationships, says Ganesha.

Real Estate News Looking for an extra set of hands to work for you? How about making your existing home work for you?
By Prashant (Sean) Goyal 0424 972 727 AS majority of us work really hard to keep up with the bills, especially the loan repayments, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that We work for our Homes. But there is a Smarter Way around where you can make your existing house work for you. Consider this scenario: Mrs and Mr Jo Blogg buys their Home for $400,000 with a modest $40,000 deposit. For the next 5 years they save really hard to bring their loan balance down to $300,000. Also, during this time their $400,000 worth of house has gone up to $500,000. At this stage they would have $200,000 equity in their house. Now they can leave this $200k equity as is or they can make it work for them by buying an investment property, without having to put any cash deposit

for it. How? At Payless Mortgages we specialize in arranging finance for the purchase of 2nd, 3rd or even 4th Property by using the Equity in the Current Home. While you might have to chip in some money from your pocket every month to cover the gap between the rent received and outgoings but your real reward lies in the Capital gain in the value of Investment property. If you look at the property prices in Brisbane 10 – 15 years ago, it has doubled and assuming that it will keep going up that way, you stand to make $500,000 capital gain on a $500,000 investment in next 10 to 15 years. Also, depending upon your personal circumstances you might be able to receive some of the money back in the form of Tax Refund due to negative income from the investment property. While there is no guarantees on how long the interest rates will stay low however the current interest rates are the lowest Australian have seen in some 30 years. At Payless Mortgages we currently have access to some of the lowest interest rates such as 4.17% per annum variable rate (Comparison rate 5.04% per annum). Which means on a loan
of $500,000 your interest only repayments could be as low as $401 per week, which is quite likely to be lower than the rent you will receive on a $500,000 property in Brisbane. But then you have to allow for other outgoings as well. For those who would like to some certainty of repayments there is an option to fixed the interest rate term for up to 5 Years. If you have been thinking about getting into an investment property the first step is get a pre approval. At Payless Mortgages we can organize an obligation free preapproval from the Bank, to confirm how much can you spend up to on the purchase of an investment property, by doing so you are well equipped to better negotiate with the Vendor as you know exactly how much you can spend. REIQ reveals shift in median house value trends in Queensland BRISBANE is the fastest-selling area in Queensland and also had the strongest lift to median house values for the year ending March 2015, according to the latest REIQ release. Featured in the Courier-Mail liftout (23 May), What’s Your Home Worth?, the REIQ median values data report shows that Brisbane’s days on market statistic is just 57 – the fastest in the state. This is an improvement by eight days, compared with a year ago. The release also shows that Cairns has been a standout performer over the past 12 months, with profitmaking sales leaping from 78 per cent of transactions making a profit to 90 per cent. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the data confirmed the REIQ’s position that Queensland was in the grip of steady, sustainable growth. “This report supports the REIQ’s long-held view that those areas of Queensland that have been doing well are continuing to do well. “Those areas that are struggling to recover from the resources downturn are still trying to stabilise,” she said. “But what we don’t have is the start of another boom and bust cycle, which, as we all know by now, doesn’t really benefit anyone in the long term.” Standout trends from the report include the general sustainable lift of median house values across the southeast, Toowoomba and the tourism centres. “It’s great to see Brisbane and Toowoomba keeping that steady
rate of growth that we’ve seen for the past 12 months. “We all know the economy is still recovering and property is clearly leading the way,” she said. “People trust property and whether you’re an owner occupier or an investor, property has shown to be a reliable performer over the long term,” Ms Mercorella said. Brisbane (LGA) median house values have risen by 1.6 per cent over the quarter, and, along with Toowoomba, this was the highest quarterly increase. Brisbane (LGA) proportion of profit-making sales increased three percentage points to 96 per cent, compared with a year ago. Meanwhile, Toowoomba holds the state’s record with 98 per cent of all houses sold recording a profit for the seller. Also in Toowoomba, the quarterly growth in median house values is the strongest in the state, averaging an increase of 1.9 per cent over the past four quarters. Outside of Brisbane, Toowoomba is the fastest selling region, with days on market at 63 days, and the Garden City continues to hold the lowest vendor discounting rate of 4.7 per cent. Five of the major regions throughout Queensland are experiencing steady improvements in median house values. Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Cairns, all showed rising annual median house values of approximately 1.5 to 1.9 per cent on average each quarter over the past year.

Arif Lohar cativates Brisbane with Jugni Live concert By Umesh Chandra BRISBANE, 17th May 2015: Brisbane Convention Centre played host to Arif Lohar - Jugni Live concert. The event was presented in Brisbane by Beat Records, American College, BM Productions, Panache Entertainment. Jugni Live attracted a decent crowd and was successful box office. The troupe being from Pakistan attracted patrons from both Punjab and Pakistan origin. The show was high powered with an amazing line up of musicians, the dholi would have to be one of the best I have seen so far, his stamina was a force to be reckoned with, his dhol was directly miked with a built in which means he had a mike lead connected to his dhol. Despite the trailing lead he managed to dance around the stage without tangling the cord. Arif’s wife did a few numbers as a curtain raiser. Preet Siyaan, host of popular radio show “Mehak Punjab Di” on Australian Indian Radio did a marvelous job of compeering for the program, he processes a wealth of poetry and has a good voice which makes him a very sought after anchor. Once Arif came on stage the crowd went berserk, Arif has a very strong voice melodious voice. He performed all of
his popular numbers, and obliged the audience with requests, Jungi took the cake as Arif hit the high notes while playing the “chimta”. Overall a all a very successful show, good turnout, talented musicians and good sound. The Pavilion level auditorium has become a very popular
IIFA 2015: Kangana, Shahid best actors, Queen bags best film KANGANA Ranautstarrer Queen, a coming-of-age story of a woman's self-discovery, took home the Best Picture, Best Story and Best Performance in a leading role - female categories at the threeday long 16th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards. The movie, directed by Vikas Bahl, was competing with 2 States, PK, Haider, Highway and Mary Kom in the Best Picture category. Kanagana didn't turn up to collect her award for the Best Performance in a Leading Role - Female and Bahl received the award on her behalf. Bahl, however, lost the award in the Direction category to Rajkumar Hirani, who won the award for his blockbuster PK. Shahid Kapoor bagged the award for Best Performance in the Leading Role - Male category for his performance in Haider. Kapoor also performed at the award ceremony, hosted by Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. He had strong contenders in Aamir Khan (PK), Hrithik Roshan (Bang Bang!), and Shah Rukh Khan (Happy New Year). Hrithik might have lost the award to Shahid, but his 'Bang Bang!' act with a bhangra twist won many hearts. Deepika Padukone, who was nominated in the Best Performance in a Leading Role Female, was felicitated with Woman of the Year award. Riteish Deshmukh grabbed the award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role Male for his villainous act in Ek Villain against competition from Ronit Roy (2 States), Randeep Hooda (Kick), 48 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, June, 2015
venue these days and is the right size for these kind of shows, acoustically suited as well with good sound and lighting. As the saying goes “Sow Din Sonaar ke, to ek Din Lohar ke” sort of translates into “ While a gold Smith needs 100 days, a blacksmith (Lohar) needs one day only”.
Shahid Kapoor’s sangeet and wedding between July 5 and 8? A SEGMENT of the media hinted that Shahid Kapoor would marry on July 10. However, one of his close friends says, "He has asked us to block dates between July 5 and 8 for his sangeet and wedding ceremonies. I think the nuptials will take place on July 8 unless I have got it wrong." The actor, who just
returned from an overseas trip, is expected to wrap up loads of work in the coming weeks and simultaneously prepare for the big moment. He and his bride Mira Rajput may, however, have to cut short their honeymoon because on July 15 Sasha will be in Mumbai for a promotional event of his next film that is based on destination weddings. TOI
I feel jealous when I see good performances: Ranbir Kapoor Inaamulhaq (Filmistaan), Naseeruddin Shah (Finding Fanny) and Kay Kay Menon (Haider). But Kay Kay wasn't left disappointed as he received the award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for Haider, while his co-star Tabu won Best Performance in a Supporting Role Female. There was also an award for Best Regional Film, which went to Riteish-starrer Marathi film Lai Bhaari, co-produced by his star wife Genelia Deshmukh. "Main Tera Hero" star Varun Dhawan won an award for the Best Performance in a Comic Role. The film's director and his father David Dhawan received the suninspired trophy on his behalf. The award for Best Music Direction went to the popular trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for 2 States. Other contenders included Mithoon ('Banjara', 'Zaroorat' and 'Hamdard') and Ankit Tiwari ('Galliyan'), for which he won Best Playback Singer Male. In the female category of the award, the "Baby doll" singer Kanika Kapoor (for the film Ragini MMS 2) got over competition from Sultana and Jyoti Nooran for 'Patakha guddi' (Highway) and Shreya Ghoshal for 'Samjhawan' (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania). HT
IN a span of about eight years in Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor has evolved as one of the most sought-after actors in the industry. He has carved a niche for himself with the versatile roles he has essayed. But despite being popular and having a huge fan base, the actor — unlike most of his contemporaries — hasn’t hired a PR agency to manage his public image. Ranbir talks about being a recluse, watching the works of other Bollywood actors, and more. Despite your stardom, you are a recluse. Why? Maybe I am, and Imtiaz (Ali, director) says that too. He says "beware", because it’s not a good thing to be a recluse, especially for an actor. I guess that’s always been my personality; I’ve always been an introvert. But somewhere, I find a channel through my work to express myself. I can’t express myself through an interview, or through Twitter, or any social network platform. I can’t keep talking about what I’m doing. But wouldn’t you want to change that? I’m not doing this intentionally; I don’t want to be a recluse, it’s in my personality. Also, as an actor, you should maintain certain amount of mystery around you. Too much exposure about your life can be detrimental because the audience can get bored of you. When almost everyone around you has a publicist to take care of their image, why don’t you have one?
www.indiantimes.com.au
I did have a publicist initially, but then I realised that it’s a dirty game. Even though you don’t put anything about yourself, your PR people fight with others in the field. They plant things and then you take the blame for it. You’re the name behind it. But I think a good PR for me would be to keep me away from the news. I think to just come back with a movie, start talking about it, would be good PR. But, I have no negativity towards it; I don’t think I’m saving the world. I’m not a doctor or the president of this country. I’m an actor and people want to know about my life, like how I probably want to know what Leonardo DiCaprio is doing, or what Jennifer Lawrence is up to when she’s not doing a film. Do you keep a tab on the work of your contemporaries? I have a lot of interest in what’s happening in the film industry. I always want to know what films are happening and what work my contemporaries are doing. This is because I have a competitive streak in me, and it’s not in a negative way. That streak inspires me and pushes me to do better in my films. And when I see a good performance by any of my contemporaries, or my seniors, I feel jealous. I feel jealous in a way that I think, "Why am I not a part of this film?" I’m not a recluse in a way that I shut off from the world and sit at home. I’m aware of what’s happening around me. Industry's attitude changes with the fate of your film: Vidya Balan ALTHOUGH her last three releases — Ghanchakkar, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Bobby Jasoos — didn’t do well at the box office, actor Vidya Balan feels no pressure to do well in her upcoming film, Humari Adhuri Kahani. Rather, she says that it’s a blessing in disguise. “No, there is no pressure at all, thanks to these films (not doing well). There is pressure when all your films do well and people expect the same from your next,” says an unfazed Vidya. And another learning from her past few films is that the attitude of the industry changes with the fate of the film. “Yes, I do think that the attitude within the industry, and your standing, both change,” says the candid 37-year-old actor. And she goes on to give a realistic picture of things. “At the end of the day, cinema is also business. When there is business involved, your salebility is very crucial ... A Friday determines which way you are going. But the audience has a large heart. Even if your film doesn’t work, people still express love. With three of my past films not working, that has been my learning. Before that I had
a fabulous phase, when every film of my film was working ... there was critical and commercial success, awards and everything. After that, I went through this (when films didn’t work), I realised that what changes is your commercial viability, how much you get paid for your next film or how much your film can get in terms of budget,” says the Padma Shri awardee. And she confesses that even she was affected by it. “The fate of your films affects the amount you charge and the budget of your films. Yes, it has happened to me too. But come Friday and things will change again,” laughs Vidya, who will be seen in a Mohit Suri directorial alongside actor Emraan Hashmi. In fact, she says that she does not let disappointment get to her. “I know I am here to stay, so I don’t get worried when I don’t have a release for some time, I do things at my own pace. And every film is different. I strongly feel that people are going to love my upcoming film,” says the National Award winner, about the love story that is based on the life of Mahesh Bhatt’s parents.
Coming Soon... Hamari Adhuri Kahani... David Lingmerth downs Justin Rose in Memorial playoff DUBLIN (United States): Sweden's David Lingmerth downed Justin Rose with a par at the third playoff hole on Sunday (7 June) to win his first US PGA Tour title at the Memorial. Hours after 14-time major champion Tiger Woods wrapped up the worst-scoring tournament of his career with a lonely final round, Lingmerth and Rose took the tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus the distance and beyond. Both twice parred the 18th in the playoff before moving to the 10th for the third hole of sudden death. Lingmerth found the fairway while Rose was in the right rough, the 2010 Memorial winner from England firing out through the green and into the gallery. His chip left him 17 feet to the cup, while Lingmerth was on the green in two. The Swede two-putted from 42 feet -draining his four-footer for par to seal the win. The two had finished tied on 15-under 273, Lingmerth closing with a three-under par 69. Rose shook off an errant shot from a bunker that struck a spectator at the final hole of regulation, hanging on to make par and complete a 72 and force the playoff. Italian Francesco Molinari, who led early and shared the lead through 15 holes, saw his challenge fade with a double bogey at 17. He carded a 71 for 275 that left him tied for third with Masters champion Jordan Spieth, whose 65 was the low round of the day. Lingmerth and Rose returned to 18 to open the playoff, where Rose's long par putt
LONDON: English football club Manchester United was on Monday (8 June) named the world's most valuable football brand, replacing German club Bayern Munich, according to a report from consultancy Brand Finance. Despite a season without any silverware, United have become the first billion dollar football brand, with 63 percent growth bringing the total brand value to $1.2 billion. Bayern slipped to second in the football brand table, with Spanish side Real Madrid third and Paris St-Germain in ninth. English clubs Manchester City (fourth) and Chelsea (fifth) lie next. Spanish club FC Barcelona, despite its resounding 3-1 win over Juventus in the Champions League final on Saturday (6
June), slipped two places from last year to sixth most valuable club, worth $773 million. Six of the top 10 most valuable club brands were from England. There were no Italian clubs in the top 10. "Manchester United's success has been masterminded by Ed Woodward, the Ronaldo of football's commercial sphere," David Haigh, CEO, Brand Finance, was quoted as saying. "As Sir Alex Ferguson developed United's world-beating reputation, Woodward (and United's owners the Glazers) capitalized on the brand's growing power to establish a worldwide fanbase and a range of sponsorship deals unrivalled in their number and value," Haigh said. made a sharp left turn at the cup to drop, and Lingmerth holed a 10-footer to match him. Lingmerth got up and down from a bunker to match Rose's par at the second playoff hole -- also 18. Woods was long gone before the playoff drama unfolded, having teed off alone as the last-placed player in the field of 71 in the wake of his career worst 85 in the third round. He posted a two-over 74 that included playing the last two holes in three-over par with a bogey at 17 and a double bogey at the last. The five-time winner of the Memorial finished with a 14-over par total of 302, his highest 72-hole total ever. Woods, the 14-time major champion who has plunged to 172nd in the world, said he tried to approach the round like any other. "Just because I'm in last place doesn't change how I play golf," he said. "Whether it's the first day or last day doesn't matter - play all out." Woods moved as low as three-under for his round with a birdie at 11, but as in the earlier rounds, the closing holes at Muirfield Village undid him. "This is a lonely sport," said Woods, who has just two weeks to regroup before the US Open at Chambers Bay south of Seattle. "Hopefully in two weeks' time, things will be a lot better and I'll be ready to try to win a US Open," Woods said. TOI

Improved fitness, delivering results the priority, says Kohli NOT quite convinced about the idea of counting the positives after a lost match, India's new Test captain Virat Kohli today said the days of learning are long over and his cricket team would be solely focussed on delivering results. Addressing a pre-departure press conference here today ahead of the tour of Bangladesh, which starts with a one-off Test from June 10, Kohli said his focus is on results. "We have learnt a lot, I don't think we need to play with a mindset of playing to learn. Obviously, we learn about the game all the time, even when we are watching it on TV. But we have played long enough now, we know what we want to achieve as a unit. So, we really want to achieve rather than go out of a match thinking what we have learnt from it," Kohli said when asked about his expectations from the team. Insisting that the team is in good shape for the Bangladesh tour, which will also have three ODIs, Kohli said fitness is a prime concern to ensure that his side keeps a steady look. "The team is looking in good shape. We conducted a fitness test yesterday because we feel that fitness is one area where we need to strengthen," he said. "Everyone is

really excited for a fresh beginning. I am certainly excited about leading the team," he added. On his own expectations from the short tour, Kohli said he is looking forward to strategise for the gruelling Test format. "I have captained teams before. At a certain level, you learn while doing the job. Tests are a difficult ball game compared to ODIs or T20s because you have to strategise for a whole day in one go," he said. "I have learnt a lot while captaining in Australia. The team's skills are good and I am looking to continue with the consistency. It's all about how you improve on your mistakes," he added referring to his stint Down Under when he took over captaincy after the shock retirement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni from the format. On his long-term goals as captain, Kohli said he wants to create a vibrant dressing room. "Most definitely we want to create an environment where players feel confident about their abilities. We do have plans and goals that we want to achieve. I feel there should be an environment where guys want to improve everyday for the team," he said. HT Call Trudi on 07 3865 6533

Wawrinka dashes Djokovic's Career Slam dream to win maiden French Open STAN Wawrinka shattered Novak Djokovic's dream of completing the career Grand Slam on Sunday when he became the oldest winner of the French Open in 25 years. The 30-year-old Swiss claimed a famous 46, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory to secure his second career Major after the 2014 Australian Open. It ended world number one Djokovic's bid to become only the eighth man to secure a career Slam as he slumped to his third defeat in a Roland Garros final in four years. Wawrinka became the oldest champion in Paris since Andres Gomez in 1990 after just his fourth win in 21 meetings against the Serb. "It's really hard to believe but it has finally happened," said Wawrinka, who fired 60 winners past the Serb. "It was the match of my life. But bravo to Novak, it's a great challenge, the biggest one to play him. It's a special moment for me." Sunday's (7 June) shock defeat, meanwhile, was only Djokovic's third in 44 outings in 2015 and ended his 28-match win streak. It was also his eighth loss in 16 finals at the majors. Djokovic, playing in his 16th Grand Slam final to Wawrinka's second, had the Swiss player under siege in the first set. Eighthseeded Wawrinka had to save break points in the opening game -- which featured a 39shot rally -- and the fifth. But the world number one broke through for a 4-3 lead when Wawrinka served up a double fault. The battling 30-year-old Swiss saved two set points in the 10th game -- one after a botched forehand put-away by Djokovic -and then carved out a first break opportunity. That was swiftly saved and the Serb gobbled up the opener after 43 minutes, celebrating with a mighty, arena-shaking roar.
Wawrinka cranked up the forehand winners early in the second set but was unable to convert two break points in the fourth game as Djokovic's renowned powers of recovery made him an intimidating target to pass. Wawrinka, who had knocked Roger Federer out in the quarter-finals, saw another break point disappear in the sixth game. In the eighth, it was the same story as Djokovic saved another break point, causing Wawrinka to violently smash his racquet into the net in frustration. But he wasn't to be denied as Djokovic surrendered the set in the 10th game with a wild backhand, collecting a warning for destroying his racquet in the Parisian clay. Djokovic was playing for the third day in succession, having needed five sets to beat Andy Murray in the semi-finals. Suddenly, he looked suddenly jaded and unplugged, fighting off three break opportunities in the second game of the third set. He dropped serve again to trail 4-2 and when he carved out a break point in the next game it was his first such morsel since the seventh game of the opener. It was no surprise when Wawrinka wrapped up the set in the ninth game with Djokovic having no answer to his opponent's lethal battery of down-the-line backhands and pinpoint accurate forehand winners. Djokovic found a late lease of life for a break at 2-0 and held for 3-0 at the start of the fourth set. But Wawrinka stormed right back, retrieving the service break on the back of a 30-stroke rally before Djokovic saved two more break points to go to 4-3. In a rollercoaster fourth set, the Swiss saved three break points in the eighth game and on the back of three of probably his finest ever backhands, broke for 5-4. It was another textbook backhand that won him the title on his second Championship point. AP, Paris
DISGRACED former Fifa vice president Jack Warner was accused on Sunday of asking Egypt for a $7 million bribe for votes to host the 2010 World Cup, as allegations piled up against the man at the heart of the corruption scandal engulfing international football's governing body. The BBC also claimed that the 72-yearold Trinidadian pocketed a $10 million payment made by South Africa through Fifa which was intended to pay for football development for the African diaspora in the Caribbean. Warner, a former schoolteacher and Trinidadian justice minister who has been indicted by the US authorities on corruption charges, has denied all the allegations against him. But he has emerged as a key figure in the scandal that erupted last month as one of 14 current or former Fifa officials and sports marketing executives accused by US prosecutors of taking part in a sweeping kickbacks scheme going back 20 years involving a total of $150 million in bribes. The scandal, which also involves a Swiss probe into the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively, has led to the resignation of veteran Fifa boss Sepp Blatter last week, just four days after his re-election for a fifth successive term. In the latest allegation against Warner, former Egyptian sports minister Aley Eddine Helal said Warner asked Egypt in 2004 to pay a $7 million bribe in exchange for seven votes to host the 2010 World Cup. "Warner was the one who approached us from Fifa. He said he could guarantee us seven votes... He asked for one million dollars for each vote," claimed Helal, who told an Egyptian TV channel that Warner's offer had been rebuffed. Egypt, one of the countries dominating African football, was a candidate to host the 2010 World Cup, but it received no votes in the 2004 Fifa ballot and South Africa was eventually chosen to host the tournament, held in Africa for the first time. 'Laundered the payment' The BBC, citing documents it has seen, also said on Sunday that Warner laundered the payment from South Africa through a supermarket chain, made cash withdrawals, paid off his credit cards, and took personal loans. US investigators suspect the $10 million was a bribe to help secure the 2010 World Cup for South Africa. But South Africa says the money, paid in 2008, was intended to pay for football development for the African diaspora in the Caribbean, where Warner was the longtime football baron. In three transactions in 2008, funds totalling $10 million were moved from Fifa's bank into an account of Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association
Football (CONCACAF) which was controlled by Warner, then its president. The BBC said JTA Supermarkets, a large chain in Trinidad, received $4.86 million paid in instalments, while nearly $1.6 million was used to pay Warner's credit cards and personal loans. Trinidad's Sports Minister Brent Sancho, a former international footballer, said he was appalled by the revelations. "He (Warner) must face justice, he must answer all of these questions. Justice has to be served," said Sancho, who played in all three of Trinidad's matches at the 2006 World Cup finals. 'A travesty' "I'm devastated because a lot of that money should have been back in football, back in the development of children playing the sport," Sancho told the BBC, describing the revelations as a "travesty". Warner was arrested on May 29 at the request of US authorities and is currently free on bail of $400,000 bail pending a decision in his extradition case. Warner, still a powerful member of parliament in Trinidad and Tobago, has taken out paid advertisements in the Trinidadian media, published articles in local newspapers, and held rallies with his Independent Liberal Party to defend himself. The South African federation issued a statement on Sunday denying the accusations levelled at them by another disgraced former Fifa executive Chuck Blazer. In testimony released by the US justice department, the former North American football supremo claimed he and other Fifa executives agreed to accept bribes during bidding for the 1998 and 2010 events. South Africa has strongly denied that it paid bribes to secure the football extravaganza -- the first hosted in Africa and a key plank of Blatter's pledges when he took over as Fifa president in 1998. "We categorically deny that this was a bribe in return for a vote," the South African federation said. "It belittles the hard work done by Madiba (Nelson Mandela), Archbishop Tutu, the South African Government and numerous others who sacrificed their time and money and family lives to make our country proud! It tarnishes their images in the most unscrupulous manner." AFP

The gold medallist also wished that the Punjab government would give her a suitable job, which would relieve her of the financial constraints.
