From the Publisher WELCOME to November issue, may I begin by wishing everyone a very happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year. To say that it was a busy period would be an understatement; with me people expect that, so I will not state the obvious. Congratulations are in order for Zach and Tiffany Davis, I was fortunate to attend their beautiful wedding ceremony in Rotorua, New Zealand. I am a frequent visitor to New Zealand, what I noticed this time was the significant rise in the number of people of Indian Origin, we were always aware that a large number of Fiji Indian had made New Zealand home, after the military coup in Fiji and with the political upheaval many Fiji Indian made their way to various countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and America. Migrants from India in the early days were the Punjabis and the Gujrati community, the Gujrati owned many corner stores commonly known as dairies. The Punjabi community went in to farming. Now this trip, the presence of people of Indian Origin and many business fields was noticeable, petrol stations, McDonald’s franchises, Hire car, cleaners, and massage therapist in Polynesian day Spas etc. So you name the industry and you will find a “desi” in that field. It is good to see. Back in Brisbane, Queensland Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk, has been made the honorary Indian of the Year, the title was bestowed upon her at FICQ Diwali function in King George Square. Queensland Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk held the annual civic reception in honour of Queensland Indian Community, the stand up cocktail function is ever so popular within the community; everyone wants to be seen at this free event. It is a perfect opportunity for photos and selfies with the Premier. The format has not changed over the years; there is the speech from the Premier, followed by the speech by either Honorary Counsel for India in Queensland or the Indian High Commissioner. Dr Maha Sinnathamby representing GOPIO and FICQ speaks and the address by the president of FICQ. White ribbon held its annual morning tea in

the Queensland Parliament House, I was privileged to be the MC of the function, and we inducted nineteen new ambassadors, fifteen from Queensland Police Service, and four from African community. The turnout was amazing for a morning tea function. Queensland Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk attended the function; it was heart-warming for me to hear that the premier followed my posts on social media. I have been serving University of Queensland as a Hindu Chaplain for some years now; there have been many memorable moments in this role that I have experience, but none as uplifting as being a part of the Organ donors’ thanksgiving ceremony. I was selected to deliver a reading and a prayer at this moving ceremony. Being on the stage with such dignitaries was an amazing experience. I was honoured to attend Hindu Society of Queensland Diwali function as the chief guest, the function was very well organised this year, the stage was tastefully decorated and the attendance was good. I was humbled to recognised as the chief guest, I have been serving Hindi Society of Queensland since its inception. One a lighter note a “desi” security guard would not let me park in the reserved parking area, to him that spot was reserved for the invited “white guests”, does this constitute discrimination? In conclusion I would like to congratulate Brisbane United Sports and Arts Club for a successful volleyball tournament. The national competition saw teams from all over Australian and from diverse cultural backgrounds taking part. I was honoured to have inaugurated the championship, in the morning and later to have formally launched Brisbane Unite sports and Arts Club as the chief guest. Wishing you all a very happy Diwali and a prosperous new year. Until Next Month, Happy reading Umesh Chandra

Migration Updates.... Subclass 457 Visa – Condition 8107
BIT ADVERTISING ENQUIRIES Email sales@indiantimes.com.au
4 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, November, 2015
THE Department of Immigration and Border Protection is stepping up their monitoring of visa holder’s compliance with their visa conditions, and even the smallest of breaches can lead to visa cancellations. To advise the Department you were not aware of the condition will not be enough to cease the cancellation process. 457 visa holders should be aware, the grant of a Subclass 457 visa comes with condition 8107, which stipulates that a 457 visa holder can only work with their sponsoring employer. This implies that 457 visa holders should be working fulltime with their sponsoring employer, and cannot take on second jobs outside of this primary employment. It is important to note that the sponsoring employer is determined by the ABN of the business rather than the type of business or who owns the business. This is particularly important for visa holders who work for an employer who owns multiple companies, or for visa holders who work for a franchised business. While 457 visa holders are able to work for “associated entities” of their business sponsor, simply because two businesses share the same owner, or are the same type of franchise, does not necessarily mean a visa holder is free to work for the other business. We suggest that you speak to our office to ensure compliance of your visa conditions and your employer’s sponsorship obligation. When a 457 visa holder ceases employment with their sponsoring employer, they have 90 days to find another employer and lodge a new nomination. Visa holders should not commence work with their new employer until a new nomination is approved, or else condition 8107 will be breached. If you are confused about your visa conditions, need to change employers or have received a notice of visa cancellation,

NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODWATER Summer in Queensland means storms. Sometimes that means flooded roads. No matter who you are, how late you are, or what vehicle you’re driving, it’s never safe to enter floodwater. Even if it looks calm, no one can predict what flowing water will do or what’s happened underneath. The road might have dropped or washed away. The floodwater may be deeper or faster moving than it appears. What looks safe can quickly escalate into dangerous
conditions. Even shallow water can be powerful enough to catch your tyres and sweep you away in a matter of seconds. More than half of flood-related deaths are the result of driving through floodwaters, so don’t risk it. Stay in control. Start preparing your Plan B now at www.qld.gov.au/floodwatersafety

Park your investment in Park Avenue THE decision to bless Greater Springfield’s first apartments with astonishing views and a short stroll to the new Orion Southbank style Lagoon and EVENT Cinemas, has seen more than 60% per cent of Park Avenue apartments sold in a flurry. Naren Sinnathamby, Director of Commercial Development for Springfield Land Corporation, has been nurturing the project from inception. “Without a doubt, this is the best location in Greater Springfield for apartment living – it’s extremely rare to find a location walking distance to Cinemas, University, Hospital, major Shopping Centre and down the road from one of Australia’s finest Golf Courses.” he said. “And our buyers, who have been purchasing with confidence off the plan, can see that vision clearly too – with almost next to no marketing we have secured • From left: Naren Sinnathamby – Director - Commercial Development, Chris Lewis – Business Development over 60% of apartment sales. “Nothing about Park Avenue was left to Executive, Aldrin Samuel – Business Development Executive.

chance – it was the first of its kind in the area and we have set the bar high. After travelling around Australia, and studying trends in design and liveability, we engaged the award winning Melbourne based PLUS Architects to customise 66 apartments offering bespoke 1 and 2 bedroom designs. “Naren said. “People are now seeing Greater Springfield as an investment hotspot – objectively I cannot think of a single development currently which has so much development in just 24 months – a $1.2 billion rail network, a $85 million Private Hospital, a $45 million university expansion, a $154 million Shopping Centre expansion, a $10 million lagoon rivalling Southbank – and all this is just the tip of the development iceberg”. In October, Kane Constructions will erect yet another crane above the construction site which is situated at the bottom of Barry Alexander Way which fronts directly onto the iconic Robelle Domain Parklands. Already, all the in-ground services have been installed and completed. The column work is done and the slabs are being poured on what is being tipped to become one of the most sought after apartment living sites in the region. The first residents are expected to move into their Park Avenue Apartments in November 2016. Park Avenue Apartments represent another residential option within Greater Springfield and complements the existing premium residential offering at the Brookwater golf community – also being developed by Springfield Land Corporation. With a limited number of apartments remaining, contact Development Manager, Chris Lewis – c.lewis@springfieldland.com.au or phone 1800 335 856 for more information.

University of Queensland Body Donor Thanksgiving Ceremony THE annual UQ Body Donor Thanksgiving Ceremony allows UQ students and staff to thank donors and their families for the contribution body donors have made to research, science and medical teaching at the University. The 183 people who generously donated their body to further medical science at UQ during the past year were honoured at a special ceremony which took place from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursday 29 October at the UQ Centre, St Lucia Campus. A central feature of the service is the Book of Remembrance which records the names of deceased donors. During the entrance procession, a recent graduate carried the book into the hall, followed by representatives of various religious faiths, students, teaching and general staff. University of Queensland Hindu Chaplain, Umesh Chandra and Unichurch chaplain, David Pitt delivered the prayers and special reading at the ceremony. The book and a single lit candle, representing the spirit of all donors, are centrally placed on the stage. The Lighting of Candles is a gesture symbolising the transfer of knowledge from donors to students. As the Book of Remembrance is opened to the list of donor’s names, an anatomy tutor passes the flame from the central candle to students who light eight other candles representing the various professional groups who benefit from the donations. The donors’ names are then read out and this is followed by a minute’s silence. The latter half of the service includes prayers for the comfort of families, and prayers for staff and students, that they may
gain the maximum benefit from the knowledge offered. The service ends with a general blessing. After the service, guests are invited to light candles in the reflection area and to view the donor’s names in the Books of Remembrance and sign the Visitors Book. Families and friends are encouraged to mingle with students and staff during the serving of light refreshments after the service. Many donors’ families and friends return annually to pay tribute to all donors. The annual UQ Body Donor Thanksgiving Ceremony allows UQ students and staff to publicly express their appreciation for the generosity of donors and their families for their highly valued contribution to research, science and medical teaching at the University. UQ Body Donor Program Acting Manager Ms Avril Johnston-Craig said the gifts bestowed to the program had enabled the
School of Biomedical Sciences to provide one of the largest anatomy teaching and research facilities in the world. “Donors and their families entrust such a precious gift to our care,” she said. “We feel extremely privileged. “Body donation plays an essential role in teaching students anatomical skills. “It also provokes our students and others to think about ethics, mortality, personal contribution, community obligation, and the potential for one person to make such a significant impact to benefit future generations.” This year’s Thanksgiving Ceremony will feature a keynote address by internationally recognised anatomist Dr Walter Wood OAM, who will reflect on his 30-year career at UQ. Now retired, Dr Wood said he had received a great deal of satisfaction over the decades from passing on his love of anatomy to students. “The contribution that donors and their fam-
ilies make to the University is of enormous value,” he said. “While students can look at anatomical images in atlases or on computers, it is vitally important that they also have experience with donated bodies. “This enables them to develop an appreciation of the breadth of human variation as every individual body is different.” The first Thanksgiving Service took place on 29 April 1992. It was initiated by a committee established in 1991 under the Chair of Dr Walter Wood of the Department of Anatomy (a predecessor of the School of Biomedical Sciences). The service was the first of its kind to be held in Australia or New Zealand and honoured all donations to The University of Queensland since 1927, and specifically (by name) the donors whose bequests had been received during 1990 and recently been cremated.

GCHCA Navarathri (Dasara) Festival
Large number of students attended International Student Friendship Ceremony 2015 LORD Mayor Graham Quirk personally greeted over 600 students at the 17th International Student Friendship Ceremony at The University of Queensland on Tuesday, October 20. Since July 2012, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has presented Certificates of Friendship to more than 5000 overseas students who have called Brisbane home while furthering their education. “International students are vitally important to the cultural, social and economic fabric of Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said. “Our city is proud to be a home-away-fromhome for tens of thousands of international students each year and I encourage them to remain lifelong friends of the city.” Friendship Ceremonies are incredibly popular with international students and all three previous events held at different educational institutions this year have been well attended by students relishing the opportunity to receive a personally signed Certificate of Friendship and a photo with the Lord Mayor. “The time students spend in Brisbane is a valuable opportunity to learn about Australian culture and to share their own culture with the city,” Cr Quirk said. “The opportunities in Brisbane will be lifelong for some, and whether they remain in
Brisbane to pursue a career after their studies or return to their home country and take the knowledge gained to advance their own nation, we know they always have part of Brisbane in their heart.” Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Queensland, Professor Peter Høj, addressed students at the ceremony. In 2014, 11,155 international students from 140 nations attended The University of Queensland, making up 22 per cent of the wider student population of 50,479. The event featured a call-out to students to nominate for next year’s Brisbane International Student Ambassador (BISA) program. The BISA program was established by Brisbane Marketing’s Study Brisbane program in 2009 and is open to international students in the city. Twenty-six honorary ambassadors were appointed in 2015 from 25 countries, including China, Taiwan, Colombia, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Macau and Singapore. His Worship the Mayor, Cr Tom Tate in his chief guest address, congratulated the Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association for their commendable work and thanked them for inviting him to such an entertaining cultural evening. He pledged ongoing support from the City Council to such a worthy cause. The GCHCA President Dr Chinniah Arunagiri guaranteed that GCHCA is working hard to build the Hindu Cultural Precinct before the Gold Coast for Commonwealth Games in 2018. He also reminded that such magnitude of a project cannot be delivered by the community alone and wider participation from local council, state and federal government is vital, especially on the financial side, for the success of the project. The event concluded with a delicious vegetarian dinner, mainly sponsored by the Krish Indian Cuisine, the Indian Restaurant with branches in Varsity Lakes, Robina and Worongary. The other major sponsor (logistics and staff) was Saffron Indian gourmet restaurant in Broadbeach. It was noted that a lot of community members wanted to attend the event, but were unable to get the tickets due to limited number seats available at the venue. Therefore, for next time, GCHCA is considering to celebrate this wonderful occasion at a larger venue, to facilitate the larger audience attendance.

Diwali by BRIMM
Devonshire Accountants goes Global New Offices set up in the heart of Africa
DIWALI is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated all over India. It is the biggest and the brightest festival, and probably the one that gives the maximum boost to the country’s economy. It is the celebration after harvest for farmers. As is it considered auspicious, many houses as well as businesses would plan their major purchases and decisions at this time. The preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period. There are many festivities that lead to Diwali, and for the state of Maharashtra- commonly identified by the presence of the economic capital of India and Bollywood- it all begins with Ganesh festival. Brisbane Maharashtra Mandal or BRIMM keeps this tradition alive and celebrates the Ganesh festival in Brisbane. This year the Ganesh festival was celebrated in Cavendish Road State High School. Over 450 people attended this program. The Ganesh festival in Brisbane tries to imitate the large scale version celebrated on the streets Mumbai, as this festival is celebrated publicly and at home. The public celebration involves installing clay images of Ganesha in a shrine and worship the statue in group. At home, an appropriately-sized clay image is installed and worshiped with the family. At the end of the ten day festival, the idols are immersed in a
body of water such as sea or river. The Ganesh festival in Brisbane imitates this original version very closely. Even though there is no immersion at the end, we do celebrate the procession with popular Marathi numbers, Bollywood songs and traditional music. The festive season in Maharashtra takes off with Ganesha Festival and continues to Diwali. This year Brisbane Maharashtra Mandal will be celebrating Diwali on Saturday 21st November, in Cavendish Road State High School, Holland Park. Attendees can participate in various competitions including drawing Rangoli, making Diwali cards and showcasing some culinary skills. Diwali program will include high energy music and dance performances by our own Brisbane artists. The highlight of the evening is fusion dances involving traditional Indian, Bollywood, Jazz, Tap and Ballet. Food is the integral part of Indian festivals. This Diwali we will showcase traditional Diwali snacks aka ‘faraal’ for afternoon tea followed by yummy dinner showcasing some of Maharashtra’s very own mouth-watering flavours. Indian Soldiers to be commemorated at proposed War Memorial By Viral Shah
MEMBERS of the Australian Indian community recently proposed the addition of a new monument to the Sunnybank RSL. The monument would serve as a reminder and tribute to soldiers of Indian heritage who have served in our armed services. The Sunnybank RSL is the first in Queensland to dedicate a memorial to Indian-Australian servicemen and women. Members of the Indian community march at the Sunnybank RSL during the ANZAC day service every year. The RSL’s support of the community makes it a perfect location for an Indian memorial. In WWI 1.2 Million Indians volunteered to fight for the British Indian army and over 74,000 who died in the war. Their contribution to our defence force often goes unrecognized. The memorial aims to shed light on their service to the country, remembering those who aren’t often mentioned. The Indian troops in Gallipoli alone exceeded 15,000 troops, comprised of Gurkha and Sikh battalions from India, and thousands of mule drivers who literally “moved” the British forces and their allies. But their vital contributions to the Gallipoli campaign has been largely overlooked until now – said the well-known Australian historian and researcher Prof Peter Stanley This is the very reason that Australia India Heritage Committee has been formed, to build a monument that would recognize Indian soldiers and give them their due. “The monument is very important because we feel the India community has never been properly recognised, it’s important for us to properly acknowledge the sacrifices that members of our community have made.” said Mr Surendra Prasad chairman of the Australian India Heritage committee. Indian troops played an important role in the battles which followed. Historian Peter Stanley places the number of serving Indian troops on the peninsula at over 16,000. India’s 29th Infantry Brigade performed brilliantly when called upon as did the Indian mule corps. Mr Surendra Prasad also said, “we request members of Indian communities to come forward and support this very important event. We have received some names of Sikh sol-
diers of Indian heritage who fought side by side with Australian Soldiers also need other Indian communities to send us the names of soldiers who may have been involved so that they are acknowledged and given their due.” The monument should act as a focus for all the fallen heroes that fought in the war who hasn’t been forgotten, it should be a place you can be proud to take your visitors and family to show them the contributions of Indian Soldiers in various wars. Australian Heritage Committee Treasurer Mr Viral Shah said, “We will be launching a fund raising drive very soon, we need at least $30,000.00 to build the monument and support from the wider community whether monetary or non-monetary will ensure an appropriate structure was built.” The committee meets on a regular basis to ensure the project is on track and no stone is left unturned to make it successful, however support from wider Indian community and active involvement will make the goal reach easier. The members of the committee are as per below: • Mr Surendra Prasad (Chairman) • Ms Norma Todkill (Secretary) • Mr Viral Shah (Treasurer) • Mr Robin Jaggessar (Joint Secretary) • Ms Indrani Ganguly (PRO ) • Mr Shyam Das • Mr Pranam Singh Heir • Mr Rashpal Singh • Mr Rakesh Sharma • Mr Kushagra Bhatnagar Please write to us with any information on aihcommittee@gmail.com or calls us on 0413 004 100 / 0416 150 911

liament since September 2006 and has always shown her wholehearted support for multicultural communities, including the Indian community. Following the 2009 election, she was appointed as the Minister for Disability Services and Multicultural Affairs. One of her most challenging tasks that year was to assure Indian students and the Indian community that students of Indian origin were safe in Queensland. She showed her support for the Indian students by appointing a commu-
nity liaison officer and convening a Roundtable to discuss ways to support the Indian student community and make sure they felt safe and even supported the Vindaloos against Violence campaign. Ms Palaszczuk has always recognised the role of the diverse Indian communities in promoting multiculturalism, harmony and peace across Queensland. She demonstrated this in 2010 when she presented the Indian community her Minister's Multicultural Community Award at the 2010 Queensland Multicultural Award ceremony. As Premier she is leading the way to dialogue between Queensland and the Indian community in many fields, trade, education and culture. Under her, the relations can only grow from strength to strength. In recognition of her leadership role and contributions to various multicultural activities, the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland along with all Indian Community organisations, unanimously decided to present ‘The Honorary Indian of the Year Award’ to Hon. Premier Ms. Annastacia Palaszczuk. By Prakruthi Mysore Gururaj Public Relations Officer – FICQ. And, today I commend our new ambassadors – all good men – for doing just that.” The Premier said it was inspiring to see community leaders and senior police officers, including Deputy Commissioner Brett Pointing, commit to become White Ribbon “champions of change”. Brisbane Diwali celebrations... DIWALI (or Deepavali, the “festival of lights”) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) every year. Diwali is one of the largest and brightest festivals in India. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of good over evil. The preparations and rituals typically extend over a fiveday period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls between mid-October and mid-November. Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate, and decorate their homes and offices. On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family puja (prayers) typically to Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity. After puja, fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Deepavali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated. Diwali is an important festival for Hindus. The name of festive days as well as the rituals of Diwali vary significantly among Hindus, based on the region of India. In many parts of India,[11] the festivities start with Dhanteras(in Northern & Western part of India), followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Deepavali on the third day, Diwali Padva dedicated to wife–husband relationship on the fourth day, and festivities end with Bhau-beej dedicated to sister–brother bond on the fifth day. Dhanteras usually falls eighteen days after Dussehra. On the same night that Hindus celebrate Diwali, Jains celebrate a festival of lights to mark the attainment of moksha by Mahavira, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. Diwali is an official holiday in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, and the Australian external territory of Christmas Island. Brisbane Diwali celebrations kicked off with FICQ. It proved to be a spectacular extravaganza showcased at King George

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER
DIWALI 2015
I am pleased to provide this message for Diwali celebrations in 2015. Diwali is a time to gather with family and friends and reflect on the meaning of this festive time - the triumph of light over darkness. This ancient tradition is marked by dancing, celebration and good food, combined with prayer and reflection. The lighting of lamps - diyas - reminds us of the shared commitment to a brighter future. During Diwali we remember that cultural expression is an important element in our society. For many, it provides meaning, purpose and inspiration to their daily lives. It enriches and enlivens our society, giving a greater texture and depth to the backdrop of modern life. Australia has long been an exemplar of how people of differenent faiths and cultures can live harmoniously together and find unity in diversity. Our country is a beacon of hope and optimism for people of all faiths - as well as those with none. I wish everyone an enjoyable Diwali.

Master and his three servants DEAR reader, it is with great joy we bring you the word of God. Everyone has opportunities to do as little as they can, be unprofitable, unproductive, lazy and always looking for the easy way out. When no one is watching, they are playing on the computer, taking long tea and lunch breaks when the supervisor is away, gossiping long hours while the manager is away. They simply go to work to pick up a paycheck and then wonder why they are not getting a rise, a promotion or being rewarded. What we have to understand is that we are to do to the best of our abil-

good steward. That you are working for almighty God. The scriptures remind us that whatever we do, we are to do heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. In the book of Matthew 25, we read of a man who called his 3 servants and gave them gifts before travelling to a far country. To the first one he gave $5000, the second one received $2000 and the last servant got a thousand dollars. The first one worked hard, invested and gained another $5000. Likewise the second servant gained $2000 more. But the last one due to fear, blame, laziness went and dug a hole and
hid the talent. After a long time the master came back, and each servant had to give an account with what they had done with gifts. The first 2 servants were commended and promoted but the last one was demoted, stripped of his gift and thrown out. Instead of looking to the master as his provider for the job and gifts and be thankful and appreciative, he looked at the weaknesses and something to blame. The master labelled him as lazy, wicked, inactive, twisted, unprofitable and unproductive. We all are accountable to our ex-

God is the one who brings promotion. It may come through your boss but God sees your hard work and rewards you accordingly. When you choose to set the standard, be diligent and do your best then God will raise you up and pour out His blessings each day of your life. God Bless you, Pastor Joseph Dass

IN Hinduism the Sanskrit term Avatara translated into English as incarnation relates to the appearance or manifestation of devine personalities in different forms to complete specific tasks. The concept of Avatara is a core principle of Hinduism from its start and has progressed with the evolutionary development of the Sanatan Dharma. Rigveda mantra 1.164.46 describes the manifestation of the Supreme Being in the form of Indra, Varuna, Mitra, Agni, Yama, etc. to accomplish particular devine roles. Taitiriya Samhita and Satapatha Brahmana, ancient Vedic scriptures, note that Prajapati, the creator, assumed forms of fish, tortoise and boar to achieve certain objectives. Similar examples can be found in other Hindu Scriptures. Subsequent evolutionary development of Vedic religious thoughts led to the establishment of the doctrine of triumvirate comprising Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva as three elements of the Supreme Being. Among them Vishnu emerged as a synonym of the Parabrahma, Ishvar, Bhagawan or supreme personality of Godhead, especially for the Vaishnava sect of Hinduism. The concept of Avatara became focussed on the appearances and manifestations of Lord Vishnu although appearances of other devine personalities in different forms remained in practice to some extent. The Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana contain stories of Avataras of Lord Vishnu. In the Bhagavad Gita 4.7-8 Lord Krishna declares about his appearance from age to age to destroy the wicked and to establish righteous. The Ramayana also mentions the necessity of Avatara of Lord Vishnu in different ages with objectives similar to those declared by Lord Krishna in the Gita (Ramcharit Manas, Bal Kand Doha 120-121). The number of Avataras of Lord Vishnu varies in different Puranas and ancient scriptures but Dashavatara or ten Avataras listed in the Garuda Purana (8.10-11) have become widely recognised and believed by Hindus. They are Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashuram (Rama with axe), Rama (hero of the Ramayana), Krishna (son of Vasudeva and Devaki), Buddha (founder of Buddhism) and Kalki (yet to appear). In the Matsya Avatara Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish and saved Manu, Vedas and seeds of all species kept in a boat by keeping it afloat during the universal deluge. In the Kurma Avatara Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise to take the load of Mount Mandara, which was being used as a staff during churning of the Ocean of Milk by demons and Devatas to extract Amrita, ambrosia. As Varaha, the Lord killed demon Hiranyaksha and brought out the Earth from the ocean where the demon had hidden it. As Narasimha, the Lord killed Hiranyakashipu, a demon king, who had a powerful boon from Brahma and had declared himself Bhagawan. During the Vamana Avatara, Lord Vishnu subdued the king of demons Bali and established the rule of Devatas in the heaven. Parashurama as axe wielding Rama Avatara killed Kshatriyas twenty-one times to avenge

acts of king Kartavirya Arjuna who had insulted his parents. Rama, the son of king Dasharatha is the hero of the Ramayana. During the Treta Yuga he appeared in Ayodhya to destroy demonic forces led by demon king Ravana. The Ramayana describes in details his life and exploits. Krishna, the eighth son of Vasudev and Devaki appeared in the Dwapara Yuga. He was instrumental in destroying Kauravas and their supporters by backing Pandavas in the Mahabharata war. He also killed many demons and wicked kings. The Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana describe his exploits in detail. Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is praised as a compassionate teacher who preached the path of Ahimsa (non violence). The Kalki Avatara is believed yet to appear in the present age of Kali Yuga. As Kalki he will destroy unrighteousness and evil at the end of Kali Yuga and will establish the rule of righteousness. Detailed accounts of all the above-mentioned Avataras are available in Puranas and other religious texts in print and on line. The evolutionary nature of Avataras from aquatic creatures to terrestrial animals and then to human beings demonstrates the comprehensive awareness of ancient Hindu sages and scholars about natural development process. Although the above-mentioned ten Avataras of Lord Vishnu are very popular, religious texts also describe other Avataras or change the list by omitting or adding a new Avatara. The Bhagavata Purana book 2 section 7 and the Garuda Purana chapter 1 mention twentytwo Avataras of Lord Vishnu. Some versions of the Bhagavata Purana note 24 Avataras and more. In some Vaishnava texts Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna is included as the eighth Avatara and Krishna the ninth. Buddha is excluded. Jayadeva’s Gita Govindam adds Balarama in the list of ten but omits Krishna, assuming him to be Vishnu himself as the origin of all Avataras. Hindu Scriptures have stories of Avataras of other devine and spiritual personalities. The Markandeya Purana describes Avataras of Ma Ambika in different forms such as Kali, Durga, Chandika, etc. Hanuman of the Ramayana is believed to be a partial Avatara of Lord Shiva. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as an Avatara of Lord Krishna. Followers of certain religious denominations believe their founder as an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu or other lead deity. It is worth noting that each of the early Avataras from Matsya to Vamana was for a particular action whereas activities of later Avataras expand over a complete human life. In human form the Avataras especially Rama, Krishna and Buddha are a great source of inspiration, which is evident from their popularity. More information on Hinduism will follow in the next edition of BIT. Awadhesh Sharma Call 07 3865 6533
Khalifa Hazrat Umar Farooq (R.A) Prepared by: Imam M.Aslam ALL praise is to Allah (S.W.T) the cherisher and sustainer of the world and peace and blessing upon our beloved prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Aleyhi Wasallam. Nabi Sallallahu aleyhi Wasallam said ‘Ya Allah strengthen you din with either Umar bin Khattab or Umar bin Hisham (Hadith). And then Rasulullah Sallallahu Aleyhi Wasallam said if there was to be a Nabi after me it would have been Umar Al Khattab (Hadith). Khalifa Umar Al Khattab is a great personality and his life is a golden chapter in Islamic history. LIFE BEFORE ISLAM Umar (R.A.) belonged to “‘Adi” family of Quraish tribe. In the 8th generation, his lineage joins with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam). Abu Hafs was his patronymic name and “al-Faruq” his title given by the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam). He was born in 583 A.C., about forty years before the great Hijrah. In his youth he was a famous wrestler and orator, and a spirited person. He was one among the few people in Mecca who knew reading and writing before Islam. His main occupation was business. When the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) got revelation and invited people to Islam, Umar became the sworn enemy of Islam and the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) and did not hesitate to harm the Muslims and Islam at every opportunity. UMAR(R.A.) ACCEPTANCE OF ISLAM It was the sixth year of Holy Prophet’s mission when Quraish leaders called a meeting and asked a volunteer for the assassination of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) Umar offered himself for this job and everybody in the meeting exclaimed that he was the right person for it. While he was on his way with a sword in his hand he met Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas who enquired of him about his destination. Umar told him that he was going to murder the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam). After some discussion Sa’d said, “You had better take care of your own family first. Your sister and brother-inlaw both have accepted Islam”. Hearing this Umar changed his direction and went straight to his sister’s house. When Hadrat Umar knocked at the door, they were studying the Holy Qur’an from Hadrat Khabbab (R.A.). His sister Fatimah was frightened on hearing Umar’s voice and tried to hide the portion of the Holy Qur’an she was reciting. When Umar entered the house he enquired about their Islam and on finding that they had accepted Islam, he first fell upon his brotherin-law and beat him severely. When his sister intervened he smote her so violently on her face that it bled profusely. On this his sister burst out: “Do whatever you like, we are determined to die as Muslims”. When Umar saw his sister bleeding, he cooled down and felt ashamed. He loved Fatimah very much but could not tolerate her conversion to Islam. However, deeply moved, Umar asked her to show the pages on which the Holy Qur’an was written. But she was, after all, Umar’s sister and told him straight, “You cannot touch it unless you take a bath and make yourself clean” He washed his body and then read the leaves. That was the beginning of Surah Ta Ha (Chapter 20 of the Holy Qur’an). When he came to the verse: “Lo! I even I, am Allah, there is no god save Me. So serve Me and establish Salat for My remembrance”. (20:14) Umar exclaimed, “Surely this is the Word of Allah. Take me to Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam)”. On hearing this Hadrat Khabbab (R.A.), who had hidden himself in the house, came out from inside and said, “0 “Umar! Glad tidings for you. It seems that the prayer of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) which he said last night has been answered in your favour. He had prayer to Allah: “O Allah, strengthen Islam with either Umar b. Khattab or Umar b. Hisham whomsoever Thou pleaseth”. Umar then went to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam). On seeing him, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam) asked him, “Umar! what brings you here”? He said, “I am here to accept Islam”. Hearing Call 07 3865 6533
this the Muslims shouted with joy, “Allahu Akbar”(Allah is the Greatest) and the sound rent the air of Mecca. Migration to Madinah In A.D. 622, the Holy Prophet decided that the Muslims should migrate from Mecca to Madina. The Muslims were required to proceed to Madina in batches. Abu Salmah Abdullah bin Ashhal was the first Muslim to migrate from Mecca to Madina. He was followed by Bilal and Ammar Yasir. Thereafter Umar migrated from Mecca. While most of the other Muslims left Mecca in secret, Umar publicly declared that he was proceeding to Madina. He even challenged the Quraish that if any one of them had the courage to stop him from going to Madina, he was welcome to try his strength with him. No Quraish of Mecca could have the courage to prevent the migration of Umar, and no one accepted the challenge to measure strength with him. Services to Islam Umar is regarded as one of the greatest political geniuses in history. While under his leadership, the empire was expanding at an extraordinary rate, he also began to build the political structure that would hold together the vast empire that was being built. He undertook many executive reforms and closely oversaw public policy. He established an advanced administration for the newly conquered lands, including several new ministries and bureaucracies, and ordered a census of all the Muslim territories. During his rule, the barrack cities (amsar) of Basra and Kufa were founded or expanded. In 638, he extended and renovated the Masjid alHaram (Grand Mosque) in Mecca and the AlMasjid al-Nabawi (Mosque of the Prophet) in Medina. He issued orders that these Christians and Jews should be treated well and allotted them the equivalent land in their new settlements. He was first to establish army as a state department. Umar was founder of Fiqh, the Islamic jurisprudence. He is regarded by Sunni Muslims to be one of the greatest Faqih. Umar as a jurist started the process of codifying Islamic Law. `Umar ibn al-Khattab was the first Muslim ruler to establish a Public Treasury; the first Muslim ruler to levy a customs duty named `ushr; the first Muslim ruler to organize a census; the first Muslim ruler to strike coins; the first Muslim ruler to organize a system of canals for irrigation; and the first Muslim ruler to formally organize provinces, cities, and districts. He established the system of guest-houses and rest-houses on major routes to and from major cities. He established schools throughout the land and allocated liberal salaries for teachers. He was the first to prohibit mut`a or temporary marriage, according to the Prophet’s earlier prohibition. He was the first to place the law of inheritance on a firm basis. He was the first to establish trusts, and the first ruler in history to separate the judiciary from the executive. He took pains to provide effective and speedy justice for the people. He set up an effective system of judicial administration under which justice was administered according to the principles of Islam. Qadis or judges were appointed at all administrative levels for the administration of justice and were chosen for their integrity and learning in Islamic law. High salaries were paid to them and they were appointed from among the wealthy and those of high social standing so as not to be influenced by the social position of any litigants. The Qadis were not allowed to engage in trade. Conquest of Jerusalem After the battle of Yermuk, when the main Muslim army under Abu Ubaida and Khalid left for the north of Syria, some Muslim contingents under Amr bin Al Ass and Shurahbil remained stationed in the southern sector comprising Jordan and Palestine. Finding that the bulk of the Muslim army had left, Artabun the Byzantine Governor assembled a large force at Ajnadin in another bid to drive away the Muslims from the soil of Syria. The battle at Ajnadin fought towards the close of 636 was very bloody and gruesome. Both sides fought bravely but ultimately the Byzantines were defeated, Artabun defeated with heavy loss fled to Jerusalem with the remnant of his
army. After the victory of Ajnadin the Muslim forces spread in all directions in Jordan and Palestine. The towns of Sabtah, Gaza, Nablus, Bait-Jibrin and many other towns were captured one after the other. That cleared the way to Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem sacred to the Jews and the Christians was strongly fortified. It was protected on every side by deep valleys and steep ascents. Military engines were mounted on the walls which were intended for playing havoc with the advancing invader. It was the winter season, and the severity of the winter added to the difficulties of the besieging Muslim force. The siege dragged on and the Byzantines offered very stiff resistance. Amr b Al Aas the Muslim Commander in the southern sector wrote to Abu Ubaida for reinforcement. By this time, northern Syria had fallen to the Muslims and Abu Ubaida was able to spare many contingents which rushed to the aid of the Muslims fighting in the southern sector. When the citizens of Jerusalem came to know that the besieging Muslim forces had been considerably strengthened they lost heart. Finding further resistance futile the Patriarch of Jerusalem sued for peace. He said that it was written in their holy books that the city would surrender to the man who was the best among the Muslims. He accordingly desired that the Caliph Umar should come to Jerusalem personally to receive the surrender of the city. Abu Ubaida referred the matter to Umar at Madina. Umar called a meeting of his Consultative Council, and asked for their advice, Othman expressed the view that it was not necessary for the Caliph to go, and that the defeated Byzantines would themselves surrender. Ali said that Jerusalem was as much sacred to the Muslims as the Jews or the Christians, and that in view of the sanctity of the place it was desirable that its surrender should be received by the Caliph personally. Umar decided to accept the advice of Ali. Leaving Ali as his deputy at Madina, Umar proceeded to Jerusalem. No retinue accompanied the Caliph. Umar was accompanied by one slave only, and between these two persons they had only one camel which they rode turn by turn. As they neared Jabia where the Muslim Commanders were to meet Umar, it was the turn of the slave to ride. The slave wanted Umar to ride the animal, but Umar refused. As they came to Jabia the people saw the strange spectacle of the slave riding the camel and the Caliph walking on foot. At Jabia the Muslim Commanders met Umar. Abu Ubaida was dressed in coarse garments, and Umar was much pleased to meet him. Yazid b. Abu Sufiyan, Khalid bin Walid and some other commanders were dressed in fine clothes and Umar expressed his displeasure at their gaudy dress. Abu Ubaida explained in detail the situation in Syria. He elaborated how with the grace of God the Muslims had been able to overthrow the mighty Byzantine power in Syria. As Umar saw the green fields, orchards and lofty buildings of Syria he was greatly moved and he recited from the Holy Quran: “They have left many a garden, fountain, park, arbour, and riches which they used to enjoy. Thus it is that We put another community in possession thereof.” A deputation from Jerusalem waited on Umar at Jabia and a treaty was drawn up. According to the treaty security of life and property were guaranteed to all citizens of Jerusalem. The safety of churches and other religious buildings and places was provided for. The citizens were required to pay Jizya. After the treaty had been drawn up, Umar decided to travel to Jerusalem. Again he travelled in a simple way as an ordinary traveller. No guard was suffered to accompany him. He rode on a poor horse, and refused to change it for a better charger. At the gate of Jerusalem, Umar was greeted by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, the elite of the city and the Muslim Commanders. While those who had come to receive him wore costly dress, Umar was dressed in a garment of coarse cloth ordinarily
www.indiantimes.com.au
worn by an average Arab. When someone advised him to wear a better dress befitting the state occasion, Umar turned down the suggestion saying that he derived his strength and status from his faith in Islam, and not from any dress. When the Patriarch of Jerusalem saw the ascetic simplicity of the Caliph of Islam, and then looked to his own costly dress, he said, “Verily Islam has excelled all other religions”. The Patriarch of Jerusalem handed over the keys of the city of Jerusalem to Umar. The Muslims were now the masters of Jerusalem. That was a special divine favour of God to the Muslims. As Umar entered the city he was greeted by the citizens with great enthusiasm. Umar said that he wanted to be led to some place where he could offer thanksgiving prayer to God. He was led to a Church but he refused to pray there, on the ground that that would set a precedent for the Muslims of the following generations to forcibly convert churches into mosques. He was thereafter led to a place where the prophet David used to pray. Here Umar offered special prayers of thanksgiving and all the Muslims joined him. As the Byzantines watched the Muslims at pray, they felt that such people so obedient to God were bound to command. The Patriarch said that he was not sorry for surrendering the city for he had surrendered it to a better people. Umar Farook (R.A) looked after the people well and with dignity. His famous words were that if a dog dies due to thirst in my Khilafat then I will be asked on the day of judgement. Few verses of the Holy Quran were revealed according to the opinions of Hazrat Umar (R.A) such as Ayaat-e Hijab etc. This shows the wisdom of Hazrat Umar Farooq (R.A). The excellence and virtues of the second caliph of Islam, Sayyiduna Umar al-Farooq, may Allah be pleased with him, are more than can be counted. ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace, said, ‘If there were to be a prophet after me it would be `Umar ibn alKhattab.’ This hadith has been narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, ‘Ismah ibn Malik and Ibn `Umar. Abu Dharr said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Truly Allah has placed the truth upon the tongue of `Umar, it speaks by him (or he speaks by it).’ Abu Hurairah said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Truly Allah has placed the truth on the tongue of `Umar and (in) his heart.’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Whoever is angry with `Umar is angry with me. Whoever loves `Umar loves me. Allah glories in the people on the evening of `Arafah generally, and He glories in `Umar particularly. Allah has not sent a prophet except that he put among his ummah an inspired man and if there is one such in my ummah then it is `Umar.’ They said, ‘Prophet of Allah, how inspired?’ He said, ‘The angels speak by his tongue.’ Hazrat Umar Farooq (R.A) became shaheed on the 1st of Muharram. We believe that all Sahabah are highly respected and they are great role models from the Ummah as our Prophet Sallallahu Aleyhi Wasallam said”Uphold my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my Sahabah (Hadith). Always try to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Sallallahu Aleyhi Wasallam and the Sunnah of his sahabah to be successful in the dunya and in the hereafter. On behalf of Islamic Society of Algester, we wish the Hujjaj Hajj Mubarak. May Allah make their Hajj a Hajj Maqboo and Mabroor. Ameen.

World Aids Day - 1 December Show your support by wearing a red ribbon during World Aids Day Awareness Week - 23 November - 1 December 2015 IN Queensland several organisations working to address HIV/AIDS issues came together in 2005 to form the Queensland World AIDS Day Alliance. Organisations represented in the alliance are: • Queensland Positive People • HIV Foundation Queensland • Queensland Health • Queensland Aboriginal & Islander Health Council • Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland • Queensland AIDS Council QWADA aims to raise awareness in the Queensland community about HIV/AIDS issues, inculding the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS as well as education and prevention initiatives. The particular focus is on World AIDS Day and the week leading up to that date. What is HIV? Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). When a person is infected with HIV, the virus begins to attack their immune system, causing it to weaken or become immune deficient. The longer a person has HIV, the more damaged their immune system can become. This process leaves a person prone to certain infections and cancers. There are two major types of HIV, called HIV-1 and HIV-2. The most common and broadly distributed HIV type is HIV-1, which accounts for most of the infections worldwide, including in Australia. What is AIDS? AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV infection, which occurs when an HIV-infected person’s immune system has been damaged after years of attack by the virus. It is diagnosed when an HIV-positive person develops one or more specific infections or certain cancers, known as AIDS-defining conditions, or when the number of specific immune system cells, known as T-cells or CD4 cells, falls to a very low level. Many of the infections resulting in serious illness in people with AIDS are caused by organisms or ‘bugs’ that are quite common and
would normally not affect someone with a strong, healthy immune system. A person with HIV infection becomes susceptible to these illnesses because their immune system is unable to fight the ‘bugs’ effectively. These infections take advantage of a weakened immune system to cause illness and are known as opportunistic infections. AIDS-defining conditions can include particular forms of pneumonia, brain disease and cancer, as well as infections that cause significant weight loss, serious eye conditions or diarrhoea. A person can recover from these illnesses and become well again, but they are still considered to have AIDS. There is no way to predict when or whether a HIV positive person might develop AIDS. Can HIV be treated? Currently there is no vaccine or cure for HIV, but drug treatments are available which can control the virus, delay progression to AIDS, and keep HIV positive people healthy for longer. These treatments are known as combined antiretroviral therapy (CAR) or highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Treatment usually involves taking three different drugs that act on the virus in different ways. There are also treatments for many of the specific illnesses associated with HIV and AIDS. Once someone begins antiretroviral treatments, they should continue to take them for life. Treatments can have side effects and people who are on treatment need to be monitored regularly by their doctors. Sometimes the virus develops resistance to the drugs and treatment may need to be changed to a different combination of drugs. Even when treatment is working well, it does not control all of the virus so the person still has HIV in their body and can pass it on through unprotected sex and sharing injecting equipment. The QWADA Coordinator for 2015 is Trish Mckenna who can provide further information about 2015 WAD activites in Queensland. Trish can be contacted via email on wad@qpp.org.au For more information visit www.qldworldaidsday.org.au
Australian plants could hold key to treating wounds, Alzheimer’s and other diseases QUT research into the use of plants to combat golden staph infections, heal wounds and treat diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s has been given a $1M funding boost from an Australian biotech company and the Commonwealth government. Dr Trudi Collet from the Indigenous Medicines Group in QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation welcomed a commercial research agreement and two Commonwealth Research Connection grants with Health Focus Products Australia Pty Ltd (HFPA). These agreements will see $1,035,614 in funding provided over three years to support three areas of research. “Australia’s biodiversity is unique and its application for the treatment of global infections and diseases has incredible potential,” Dr Collet said. “Project one utilises an Australian plant to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (known as golden staph), a common infection often acquired in hospital, which not only delays wound healing but is on the rise worldwide. “Our second project will explore the use of three different Australian plants for the treatment of chronic wounds. Globally, more than seven million people suffer from a chronic wound, while in Australia, 433,000 people are diagnosed each year. The associated 34 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, November, 2015

treatment costs are estimated to be in excess of $2.6 billion AUD. “The third project under the agreement concerns the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. This is a fantastic journey QUT is set to undertake with HFPA and I believe the outcomes will have international significance.” Dr Mark Baldock, HFPA Chairman and Founder, said the funding was a commitment that recognised the value of the research even at its earliest stages. “Our interest is in improving the plight of older Australians on a medical and social level. Chronic wounds and institutionalised diseases are hugely debilitating for many thousands of elderly people who often suffer without treatment or recognition of their condition,” Dr Baldock said. “With our aging population we are going to see an increase in health problems like dementia and chronic wounds while the rise in antibiotic-resistant infections is another concern. “I was very excited to hear of this work by Dr Collet. We have a common goal and I hope that in the future we can work more extensively with QUT. I am also hopeful that other biotech companies will follow our lead in offering this kind of early entry research funding.” Call 07 3865 6533

By Dr.Pradeep Neupane(BAMS) Clinical Director Vibrant Ayurveda Wellness Center Ph: 7-38462272, 0452506389 info@vibrantayurveda.com.au www.vibrantayurveda.com.au IT is a real fact that obesity is one of the most serious health issues in the modern world. Thousands of people are dying every day simply because of excessive fat in their bodies, which leads to serious health problems like Heart Disease, Diabetes, Cancer, etc. Obesity isn't only affecting the western world; it is now becoming a major problem in the cities of developing countries like India and Nepal where an increasing number of people are now living luxurious sedentary life-styles similar to those in the west. Excess fat isn’t good for our health no matter where it is. But new research has shown that the location of fat will determine the health risks. According to this new research, fat lying deep inside the abdomen, called visceral fat, is more perilous than the subcutaneous (meaning “beneath the skin”) fat that we can pinch with our fingers. Fat cells aren’t just inert storage depots. They are biologically active cells that act like miniature endocrine organs, making and secreting hormones and other molecules that affect other tissues. Visceral fat cells are particularly dynamic. Their activity has been implicated in a number of chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, and breast and colorectal cancers. The good news is that visceral fat responds more efficiently to diet and exercise than fat on the hips and thighs. Here are some approaches that may help to minimize belly fat: Regular Exercise Exercise can help reduce waist size. Even if you don’t lose weight, you will lose visceral fat and gain muscle mass. Engaging in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days, both aerobic activity and strength training can help trim visceral fat or prevent its growth. This may include fast walking, jogging or running for about half an hour at least every second day, followed by aerobic exercises and yoga stretching. Here are a few gentle exercises you can do at home to reduce visceral fat: - Dvichakrikasana- lying down on back and cycling with alternate leg first and then both legs together. (5-6 times each) - Padavrittasana- Lying on back and rotating one leg in a circular direction and then other leg and both legs together. (5-6 times each) - Ardha-Halasana- Lying on back and lifting both legs straight up together at the angle of 90 degree. (5-6 times) Breathing Exercises Certain breathing exercises increase the heart rate and can be beneficial in reducing fat in the body. Here is a good one: Kapalabhati Pranayama (Fast breathing out with forcefully pulling abdominal muscles in at the same time) for 2-10 minutes Good Diet Choosing a good diet is vitally important in maintaining healthy weight. It is a real fact that our diet contains too many carbohydrates. Many of us love to eat rice and different fried foods all the times. Unnecessary carbohydrate from rice or bread gets stored as fat mostly around the waist and abdomen. So, it is very important to consume more vegetable (about 40%) than protein (about 30%) and carbohydrate (about 30%) in our daily meals. Also, it is important to include plenty of food containing calcium in our diet as new research suggests that the more calcium we consume, the less visceral fat we gain. Here are some recommended foods with high source of calcium: low fat milk, yoghurt, cheese, broccoli, kale, spinach, orange, beans and Tofu, almonds, etc. Regular Sleep pattern A five-year study found that adults under age 40 who sleep five hours or less a night accumulate significantly more visceral fat. But too much sleep isn’t good, either—young Call 07 3865 6533
adults who slept more than eight hours also added plenty of visceral fat. The best duration of sleep is 7 hours. However, children and sick people will need longer periods of
sleep. Herbs and spices The following tips may help reduce excessive fat in the body-
If above diet, exercise and regular sleep pattern is not enough to reduce stomach fat, you may have an imbalance in metabolising fat in your body. If this is the case, it is recommended to get your health thoroughly assessed by an experienced health practitioner as soon as possible.

HEY Girls, this time find some home Remedies for hair growth and prevent getting grey. Find some tried home remedies for hair growth. However, each of the hair strands has a life cycle with different stages in it. By the time you reach middle age, which is around 30 years, hair growth slows down. This happens due to hormonal imbalances, excessive stress and an imbalanced diet. Anyone with long and thick hair is seen as healthy and strong. Your hair defines how healthy your mind and body are. And the best way to maintain the health of your hair is by using natural remedies and nourishing henna hair recipes. In this article, I have shortlisted some of the most effective natural home remedies for hair growth that actually gets result within a short period of time. Onions: Just like garlic, onions are also a powerful natural remedy for hair growth. Although the strong smell of onion makes it repulsive to many people, but you have to come to terms with it if you want to have long and gorgeous tresses. The sulphur present in onions boosts the formation of collagen tissues that promotes hair growth. You can either use red onions or shallots for this remedy. Take 2 to 3 onions and grate them to extract the juice. Apply this juice on the scalp and leave it on for 30 minutes. Now, wash your hair with a mild shampoo. This remedy can be repeated once every week. Egg Mask: Egg mask is one of the most effective home remedies for dull hair. Healing properties of the egg whites work well to replenish and restore the softness of the hair. With high levels of proteins, zinc, sulphur, iron, phosphorus and iodine, it is the most amazing mask you can apply to your hair for thick hair growth. Crack open two eggs, eliminate the yolk and apply the egg white mask to your hair. Leave it on for 15 minutes. It will look shinier and healthier instantly. If used regularly it will help in growing your hair fast.
Egg, Honey and Olive Oil Mix: Add one teaspoon of honey and olive oil to an egg white in a bowl. Mix it together and form a smooth paste. Apply this paste over your hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water and apply shampoo. Rinse it off thoroughly and see the difference. The combination of egg, honey and olive oil makes this remedy one of the potent natural hair conditioners for dry hair. Honey is an amazing home remedy for hair growth that rejuvenates dry, damaged and brittle hair. Being a natural humectant, it at-
tracts and stores moisture in the hair strands and the antioxidants and nutrients present in honey supply the hair follicles with the essential nutrients that promote hair growth. Olive oil is an important natural oil that encourages hair growth. Olive oil prevents the production of DTH hormone that causes narrowing of the follicle shafts. The antioxidant in the oil improves the health of the scalp and neutralizes the damage caused by styling products. It also fights dandruff, fungi and bacteria and keeps the scalp clean and healthy. Curry Leaves and Coconut Oil: Take half cup of coconut oil (depending on the length of your hair). Add 7 to 8 fresh curry leaves to it and boil it together. Don’t burn the leaves; just bring them to a boil. You will find black residue forming; apply this residue to your hair. Use this twice a week to see the difference. This mixture will help in hair growth and also fight grey hair. Curry leaves are widely used in Indian cuisine for tampering the dishes, but it is also one of the most effective herbs for grey hair that also aids in promoting hair growth. You might have heard your grandmothers say that curry leaves are good for hair. Curry leaves work well, not just by applying its paste to the hair, but also by eating it. Whenever you cook something with curry leaves in it, eat up the leaves! As for coconut oil, its benefits for hair health need no new introduction. It is by far the best remedy for hair loss and promoting hair growth. The fatty acids in coconut oil bind with the hair proteins and protect the hair strands from root to tip and prevent breakage. It seals the moisture in hair by penetrating through the hair shaft and provides protection against pollution and heat. Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is simply perfect to fight anything related to body and hair, naturally. It is used to cleanse pores and balance your pH levels. However, people do not know that aloe vera is good to prevent hair loss. Applying natural aloe vera gel on scalp and hair is one of the best ways to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. The benefits of aloe vera can be traced back to the 75 nutrients that it contains. Aloe Vera remedies: Certain enzymes present in aloe vera such as proteolitic enzymes removes dead skin cells from the scalp so that the hair follicles don’t remain clogged. In addition, it is a nourishing conditioner that makes hair silky soft and smooth. Take two tablespoons of your shampoo in a bowl. Add one tablespoon of aloe vera gel, coconut milk and ½ teaspoon of wheat germ. Mix it together and shampoo your hair with it. I am sure you will get benefited by this, especially when summer is approaching. Will see you in next issue. Nimisha.

Running high fever? It could be stress IF you’ve been running high fever and don’t feel like going to office, don’t ignore this piece of information. This fever may not be any illness but just psychogenic fever. It means this fever is a stress-related psychosomatic condition that manifests itself in high body temperature. It is caused by exposure to emotional events or to chronic stress, researchers said. While this condition is known in the literature, only a few doctors in the world study it and treat patients with psychogenic fevers, said Dr Takakazu Oka from Kyushu University School of Medical Sciences, Japan, who specialises in psychosomatic medicine. However, this condition is relatively widespread. Oka has seen a high number of patients, especially amongst Japanese students due to academic stress. Oka said due to many doctors not fully understanding how stress can affect body temperature, patients with psychogenic fever are being diagnosed with

cause unknown for their disabling symptoms. The complaints from patients are of fever itself, along with the symptoms from high temperature, symptoms from stress, plus the symptoms from psychiatric diseases that the patient may suffer from. “High body temperature is just one of the symptoms induced or exacerbated by stress. Patients ask for the treatment of fever not just their temperature be normalised, but all symptoms to be treated,” Oka said. Several treatment options are currently available, but, in general, they are similar to the treatments of other stress-related diseases and not specific to psychogenic fever. However, Oka is convinced that a breakthrough in treatment will occur in the near future, as more research is conducted. Instead of using the traditional term “psychogenic fever”, Oka proposes to call this condition “functional hyperthermia”. The study was published in the journal Temperature. HT Call 07 3865 6533

Oily skin? White heads? Here’s how you can take care of your T Zone
WHILE many of us fix up salon appointments to rid ourselves of black heads that are clearly visible, sneaky white heads are more difficult to remove. For the uninitiated: “White heads or closed comedones occur due to accumulation of sebum and oil inside the pore of skin, leading to formation of acne,” says cosmetologist and dermatologist Nandini Baruah. In simpler terms: “White heads are basically ‘first type of acne’ or symptoms of acne. These occur when oil gets collected in pores,” describes dermatologist Madhuri Agarwal. What not to do Constantly touching the affected area with the hands, or trying to pop white heads only adds to the ailment. The problem is very common in the facial T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin), and with the nip in the air, it’s vital to be season-smart. “In winter, skin gets dry, so many of us use cold creams which further block skin pores, making it sticky. Consult an expert and use the right kind of moisturiser,” adds Madhuri. Fixing the issue Besides consulting a dermat, experts also suggests a proper skin care routine. “Frequent cleansing of face and application of creams such as benzoyl peroxide and

retinoids helps. Sometimes, blocked pores can be opened with the comedone extractor under a dermatologist’s guidance. In winter, the routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising should be followed religiously. Sunscreen application in the day is a must. Oily, spicy food is to be avoided, and plenty of water intake is a must. Hormonal factors like PCOD should be ruled out in excessive cases of white heads and acne,” adds Nandini Baruah.
4. Turmeric has inherent healing properties. Create a face mask adding a tinge of acidic lemon juice to get rid of white heads. 5. Make sure you wash your face frequently and don’t use products that clog the skin further. 6. Use aloevera gel or plant-based packs to fight the occurrence of white heads. Singdha Ahuja, Hindustan Times, New Delhi
Kitchen whipped fixes for white heads 1. White heads lead to inflammation of skin. Use honey-based packs that can helps calm the affected area. 2. Facial sauna or steam treatments can help open up pores so you can remove dirt and bacteria. 3. Exfoliation helps too. But use organic ingredients such as oatmeal mixes and sugar to scrub.

THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, November, 2015 — 37
Australia and India: here & there By Kushagra Bhatnagar I MIGRATED to Australia in 2008. Since then I have been observing the Australian way of life rather minutely in comparison with the Indian way. There are stark differences between the two societies, and we all know most of them. Each one of us has their own way of explaining away the differences especially when the Indian side appears to be weaker, which it is in many cases. However I am not going to discuss the most commonly known real as well as the perceived differences. I am taking up the difference in the way the governments of the two countries handle regulations. The glaring difference exists in the fact that many businesses in India are completely unregulated while those same businesses in Australia (and I suspect in most of the developed world as well) are strongly regulated. Let us study a few of them one by one. It is no discovery that two of the most unregulated breeds in India are commercial drivers and builders/developers. The commercial drivers whether for taxis, auto-rickshaws, trucks or buses are hardly under any kind of regulations. With total impunity, they feel free to cheat customers, behave rudely with them, violate traffic rules, not to speak of occasional rape of some hapless
woman. No government has so far been able to rein in these people. Why? Because this crowd forms a strong vote bank. Any effort to control their conduct is perceived to be politically unwise. This may or may not be true because no one has tried it. This needs no passing of bills in parliament; this needs no presidential ordinance; this just needs those in power to enforce the law with a stern hand. Now we have some muddled minded rulers in India who had issued the dictum that the taxi/auto-rickshaw drivers are free to do what suits them. The police cannot book them for refusing a fare, for misbehaving with a customer, overcharging and even for drunken driving. Anyone residing in the national capital Delhi would vouch for the misery commuters have to suffer at the hands of the misbehaving lot of taxi/auto-rickshaw drivers. So in effect the only law for this lot is that there is no law. In sharp contrast in Australia all the commercial drivers are strongly regulated. While an ordinary citizen has the chance of getting away lightly for traffic offenses, the commercial drivers have zero chance. One error and he loses his license, making him unemployable as a driver. I know for sure that even in Dubai and Turkey the commercial drivers are subject to tight discipline. Even the slightest over speeding will have the driver’s license taken away for a few years. Second offense and he loses his license for life. Likewise the builders/developers in India also enjoy the luxury of working in a regulation free environment. Name any aspect of bad, irrational,
unruly, unethical, customer unfriendly, outright cheating, fraudulent business conduct and you will find this lot is guilty of it. They enjoy complete, unrestricted freedom of whatever business practice each one of them wishes to employ. Why? We cannot explain this nonsense by trying to link this with the politician’s’ fear of losing an election. This lot does not exist in numbers that are large enough to become a vote bank. So why the inexplicable liberty? Possibly the black money. We all know that property market is the largest creator of black money. It creates black money and it also consumes black money. A great proportion of parallel economy thrives in the property market. Who are the people with enormous amounts of unaccounted money? Of course, the politicians. Hence it stands to reason that they have a huge stake in the property market. This is why irrespective of which party is in power or out of it, this lobby continues to make merry at the expense of the customers. If I as a politician invest billion rupees in property market, I will jolly well make absolutely sure that the people who handle the market remain protected at all times. Again in sharp contrast the builders/developers are regulated with strong rules in Australia which do not permit any discretionary powers to the bureaucrats or politician which can be misused. We all know there is a thin, practically invisible line between discretion and discrimination.
Recovering student loans from overseas residents PEOPLE who have benefited from Australian student loans and now live overseas will pay for them the same way as they would if they lived in Australia following the passage of legislation through Parliament late last night (9 Nov). Minister for Education and Training Senator Simon Birmingham said it was estimated that up to $30 million was lost annually due to graduates moving overseas. Senator Birmingham said the passage of the (Overseas Debt Recovery) Bill 2015 and the Student Loans (Overseas Debtors Repayment Levy) Bill 2015 would ensure Australia’s world-class, income-contingent student loans scheme was fairer and more sustainable into the future. “Until now, people who took out a loan under the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP) or a Trade Support Loan (TSL) and moved overseas were under no obligation to repay their debt as long as they remained offshore residents,” Senator Birmingham said. “The Turnbull Government is committed to ensuring the future sustainability of Australia’s student loans scheme and to ensuring it is fair for all Australians. “From 2016-17, anyone who has a Higher Education Loan Programme or Trade Support Loan debt who earns above the minimum repayment threshold (currently $54,126) will be required to make repayments re-
gardless of where they live. “As well as making the scheme fairer and more equitable, the Government’s changes will improve the sustainability of the scheme with taxpayers to benefit by $150 million over the next decade.” Australian taxpayers have lost an estimated $400 million to $800 million due to non-repayment of debts from students living overseas since the student loan scheme started in 1989.[1] “It is estimated that around $20 30 million each year was lost due to graduates moving overseas,” Senator Birmingham said. “From 1 January 2016, all Australians with current and new HELP and TSL debt who move overseas for six months or more will be required to notify the ATO via the myGov website to facilitate repayments. “And from 1 July 2017, Australians with HELP and TSL debts who are non-residents for tax purposes will be required to assess their total Australian and foreign-sourced income in order to make income-contingent repayments, starting with the 2016/17 financial year.” Senator Birmingham said the Turnbull Government’s changes also enabled Australian and overseas authorities to better share data to support debt recovery. Enjoy the exquisite lilac haze of Jacarandas in Brisbane by Celine Goh, Features Writer Mauve, misty, mysterious ... melding into one another along avenues and river banks, JACARANDAS are in full bloom at this time of the year. Enchanting and inviting, they form canopies of delicate pale purple florets that float to the ground, forming thick carpets of soft confetti. I'm always lost in this hazy shangri-la, awestruck at the beauty of God's creation. In the distant horizons, they stand out in majesty and uniqueness. In neighbourhood gardens, up close, God's perfect craftsmanship in creating each floret is revealed. Millions of these delicate florets form a magical magnetic tunnel, irresistibly drawing one to taste the sheer joy of being embraced in a hazy, dreamlike fantasyland. Behold the sight above and feel the florets soft and tender against your feet. Do I dare believe that this is heaven indeed? And yet, we wonder how Jacarandas have flourished in Brisbane. They grow best in warm humidity and reach full bloom in late Spring, usually around October and November. Parents and school children may not fully welcome them as they signify the start of the school examinations! The Courier Mail of 11 Oct has an article titled, “Jacaranda trees in full bloom already as warm weather springs a purple haze on Brisbane”. It reports that the city had unusually heavy rainfall for the first six months of the year. Brisbane Botanic Gardens curator Ross McKinnon said trees such as the Jacaranda have absorbed all that moisture and now, spurred on by the recent warm weather, pro-
lific blooms have sprouted all over Brisbane. Whole avenues such as Lynelle Street in Sunnybank Hills, have been transformed to a lilac haze. Indeed, New Farm Park showcases some of the best displays of Jacarandas in Brisbane. Take a ride on the City Cat Ferry along the Brisbane River and feast your eyes on the picture postcard beauty of gracious homes laced with lilac hues. Mr McKinnon revealed that old Jacarandas

Recall on Infinity cabling IN August 2014, Infinity electrical cables were recalled by 18 electrical retailers and wholesalers due to safety concerns. Time is running out before the cables become a fire or electrocution risk. Acto now before it’s too late - get your cable checked. The cables were supplied in: • NSW - 2010-2013 • ACT - 2011- 2013 • Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia - 2-12 - 2013 • Tasmania - 2013 It is estimated that up to 40,000 homes, commercial and residential buildings in Australia could be affected. Infinity and Olsent-branded Infinity cables failed to meet electrical safety standards due to poor quality insulation (plastic coating). Testing found the insulation on the ‘TPS’ and ‘orange round’ range of cables will become brittle prematurely, which may present a safety hazard if the cables are disturbed and the insulation breaks. Cables exposed to prolonged high temperatures will degrade at a faster rate. Once the insulation is brittle, physical contact with the cables could dislodge the insulation and lead to electric shock or possibly fires. The taskforce found there is no immediate danger; however, careful steps need to be taken to stop electric shock or fires from occurring in coming years - as early as 2016 for New South Wales.

What should you do? Have your wiring checked by a licensed electrician if, between 2010 and 2013, you: • purchased a new property • renovated • had electrical work done, including appliance installations. Do not attempt to inspect cables yourself. If you are unsure who did the electrical work, talk to your builder. If you don’t know who the builder was and are unsure if Infinity cables were installed, get a licensed electrician to inspect your wiring. To date, 27 suppliers have announced recalls of Infinity cables. Further recalls may be announced in the future. REIA news

Real Estate and the Economy
By Jock Kritals, REIA Acting CEO jock.kreitals@reia.com.au REIA News Oct 15 ACTIVITY in the real estate market is driven by many factors, chief amongst these on the demand side are: economic factors such as GDP growth, employment levels and income; confidence, and; interest rates. Whilst the supply side and its impact on affordability is also important this has been addressed previously by REIA. While mining investment has waned, importantly, dwelling investment supported by historically low interest rates has been the second largest contributor to growth in the Australian economy. Australia’s property industry is emerging as the main driver of economic growth and increased employment. ABS building activity figures show that residential construction activity is up substantially and will continue to provide both economic and jobs growth over the medium term future. Apartment building activity expanded at its strongest rate in the past 13 months while house building achieved an 11 month high in its rate of expansion. Queensland vacancy rate data reveals two-tier market NEW REIQ vacancy rate data for September reveals the Queensland property market is continuing to operate at two speeds with rates remaining tight in the southeast corner and rates holding steady, albeit weaker, in the regions. The rental markets from Gympie south to the Gold Coast and west to Toowoomba are largely at almost historically tight levels, with some parts of the Sunshine Coast registering less than one per cent vacancy. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said demand was rising and limited inventory meant the market was very tight, particularly in Caloundra and Noosa, with both areas registering 0.9 per cent vacancy rate – the lowest in the state. “We’re seeing strong demand for rental properties in these areas and while a small level of this demand is seasonal, it does mean good news for investors who have certainty around finding tenants for their properties,” she said. Brisbane continued its long-term trend with a vacancy rate of 2.8 per cent, which was still in the healthy range. “We continue to see strong demand for dwellings in the Brisbane market and despite some commentators who suggest that we are facing a glut the data tells a different story,” Ms Mercorella said. “New apartments in Brisbane are reportedly being snapped up by investors and owner-occupiers, although the vacancy rate softened slightly, from 3.0 per cent to 3.3 per cent. “Local agents are telling us that in order to secure a tenant, rental incentives are being offered,” she said. “Asking rental prices are also said to be softening in response to the level of supply, however it is evident that the tenant demand is still there.” The Gold Coast dropped from 2.3 per cent to 1.7 per cent, while the greater Sunshine Coast area recorded a drop from 1.6 per cent to 1.3 per cent.
156 - 178 Progress Road
The Fraser Coast recorded a small dip from 3.8 per cent to 3.7 per cent, reflecting a trend towards a healthier investor market. Likewise, the news was good in Toowoomba as the vacancy rate dropped from 3.1 per cent to 2.7 per cent. This reflects the strength of the region and the diversity of its local economy. Improving employment prospects are adding to local confidence with the second range crossing scheduled to begin construction in 2016. Regular international freight flights out of the Brisbane West airport is also expected in the not so distant future. Further north, the market is softer, with Gladstone recording a weakening in its vacancy rate. Gladstone’s vacancy rate lifted from 5.2 per cent to 7.1 per cent. Ms Mercorella said the market in Gladstone was facing challenges but with promised infrastructure projects emerging on the horizon a recovery was likely. “With potential projects slated to go ahead, such as the Eden Bann Weir scheduled for next year and the Gladstone to Fitzroy River pipeline, employment should improve and with that, the property market.” Further north, Rockhampton data revealed a steadily improving picture with the vacancy rate moving from 6.0 per cent to 4.5 per cent. Mackay’s vacancy rate held steady at 9.1 per cent for a second consecutive quarter and local agents report that despite the somewhat high vacancy levels, a small level of optimism was returning to the market as employment prospects firmed. “We are hearing that tenants are taking longer leases in response to better employment certainty and while it would be premature to suggest a turnaround was imminent we are confident in our position that the bottom has been reached,” Ms Mercorella said. By Gagan Tandon 0425 158 280 THERE are few less appealing prospects than having to devote considerable time, energy and effort to finding a home loan that meets your needs. It’s even less appealing to negotiate your home loan deal directly with lenders in such a confusing market where every lender has multiple products and different lending policies. Astrology Aries - March 21 - April 20 This year looks set to be opportune for Aries natives. You shall maintain good health, this time around. Saturn will be transiting in Scorpio Sign throughout the year. Hence, you must manage your finances wisely. Financially, though your income shall be satisfactory, you may feel uncomfortable occasionally. Rahu will move into Leo Sign from 30th January 2016, and thus join Jupiter, already positioned therein. Hence, remain cautious while taking any decision, as the way ahead may be less favourable. Jupiter moving into Virgo Sign from 11th August 2016, indicates career growth for professionals, and fulfilment of desire to expand your business. Legal issues and matters related to foreign land shall now get resolved. You can also expect to recover your dues. This year shall provide several opportunities to Aries natives. Besides students and those doing a job shall achieve remarkable success. However, professionals should not get lured. You may also be inclined towards speculative activities, but avoid taking too many risks, advises Ganesha. Besides, Saturn will be transiting in Scorpio Sign - ruled by Mars, and also through the 7th House from your Sign. You should therefore remain cautious regarding matters related to marriage and partnerships. Moreover, Saturn's third aspect on the House of Fortune may cause obstacles and adversely affect your destiny. Hence, you may become more inclined towards religion, and relations with your father might get strained. You may also develop a negative attitude. There is a possibility of changing your residence, or getting relocated. Those doing a job may get transferred. Jupiter placed in Leo - the 4th House from your Sign, indicates rise in your regular income. Celebrating an auspicious occasion in your maternal side is also foreseen. You shall now overcome your enemies, and health issues shall be resolved. Ganesha also predicts that you shall move ahead successfully in your area of activity. With Rahu moving out of the 5th House from your Sign, around end of January-2016, you shall feel less anxious in matters related to love relationships, and your children. This planetary transit also signifies a progressive way ahead for students. However, Rahu's transit over the 4th House may make you restless and angry. Remedy: Bath Shivling with pure water, light a lamp, burn incense sticks, and thereafter chant one round (rosary) of the following Mantra:Om Namah Shivay(ૐ નમ: શિવાય) Gemini - May 23 - Jun 21 This Vikram Samvat-2072 year begins on a good note for Gemini natives. You are basically under the influence of Mercury - the Lord of your Sign. Hence, you shall achieve success in various areas of life that are influenced by Mercury. Moreover, Jupiter is favourably posited in the 3rd House from your Sign. Important tours, socialising and meetings are foreseen. Relationships in general, shall be more intimate/cordial, and you shall also understand importance of the same. Brother, sisters and other relatives shall cooperate. You shall now undertake some significant ventures of your life. Jupiter's transit in the 4th House from your Sign, in the latter part of this year, indicates some pleasant events during this period. Issues related to land, property and vehicle shall be resolved. However, Saturn may delay and cause some difficulties in professional, health and legal matters. Anyway, do not get afraid by the adver-
corner’. The fundamental difference is that a mortgage broker approaches the transaction from the perspective of the client, whereas anyone working for a bank is going to be focused on looking after the bank’s interests. Being experienced in this industry means your mortgage broker speaks the lender’s language, they have access to almost all banks home loan products, they know what to ask for to meet the client’s needs and whether or not the lender is offering a good deal. While lenders spend millions of dollars every year on advertising and promotion, chances are a good mortgage broker should generally be able to get the client a better deal than if they went to the lender direct. This might be a significant reduction on the interest rate, the waiving or reducing of fees, or some flexibility on the amount that can be borrowed. These kinds of offers might only be available to mortgage broker clients, for a limited period of time, or for certain types of customers. And chances are they won’t be promoted in TV commercials or on branch window posters. It’s all about the relationship At each of the various lenders, mortgage brokers deal with relationship managers, whose job it is to work with mortgage brokers to encourage them to write loans with their business, address any problems and to ensure the client application process goes smoothly. Mortgage brokers deal with these

Actually, Lord Saturn only tempers you, causes struggles, and provides delayed rewards. Hence, you may get upset by minor obstacles. Remedy: Daily worship Lord Shiva and chant one round (rosary) of Mahamrityunjay Mantra. Cancer - June 22 - July 22 Jupiter's transit through the 2nd House from the beginning of this year portents a favourable time ahead on the financial and domestic front. Moreover, the 5th aspect of Jupiter on the 6th House shall provide peace of mind and stability in matters related to diseases, enemies, maternal relations, regular income and job. Besides, Jupiter's 7th aspect on the 8th House, signifies sudden monetary gains for Cancer natives. Legacy issues shall now get resolved, and you shall also recover from chronic ailments. Progress in your business and profession is foreseen as Jupiter is aspecting the House of Profession/Karma. However, remain cautious and avoid taking wrong decisions, after Rahu joins Jupiter in Leo Sign on 30th January 2016, advises Ganesha. Further, Saturn's presence in the 5th House, indicates a red signal regarding speculative and stock market related activities. Students may also face a tough time, hence you must study hard and avoid company of bad friends, if any. Those planning to get married may have to wait for some time, due to Saturn's 3rd aspect on the 7th House from your Sign. Whereas, married ones may frequently experience conflicts or disharmony. Further, Saturn's 3rd aspect on the House related to Job and Diseases, indicates a transfer or change in your job. Also, take good care of your health, this time around. You shall now be able to implement changes in your business, due to Saturn's 7th aspect on the House of Karma/Profession. Recession for a short duration in your current business is also foreseen, yet Leo natives shall tactfully find a way out, says Ganesha. Remedy:Chant this Mantra: Om Tatpurushaay Vidmahe Mahadevaay Dheemahi Tanno Rudrah Prachodayaat. people almost daily and, over time, generally develop a good working relationship. It’s not unusual for something to go wrong, and when it does a mortgage broker can talk to contacts and have the problem addressed as quickly as possible – try doing that through a call centre! These relationships make it easier to get what the borrower needs. Dealing with lenders direct Unless you’re familiar with the products, rates and lending policies of each of the lenders, it can be difficult to know what to ask for and whether the deal being offered is a good one. The saying goes ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’, but how would most people know what to ask for. Loan structure is critical Another critical consideration is the loan structure – it’s not just about a good interest rate or having fees waived. Structuring of the loan is really important to ensure your needs are being met. This can be an extremely complex area. Libra - September 23 - October 22 This year looks set to be propitious regarding domestic and money matters for Libra natives. You shall remain busy with your financial plans and family issues during the transit of Venus – the Lord of your Sign. From the beginning of this year, Rahu will be transiting in Virgo, the 12th House from your Sign. Whereas, Saturn will be transiting in Scorpio. Hence, you may face a financial crunch, this time around. However, you shall be relieved from the influence of Saturn's Sade-Sati by the end of this year. Besides, Jupiter's transit through the House of Gains shall prove to be highly beneficial. Issues related to your siblings shall get resolved. Proceed carefully in stock market and speculation related activities, else you may incur a big loss, cautions Ganesha. Your desire to find a suitable life partner shall be fulfilled during this year. Love problems and marital issues shall get resolved before 11-08-2016. Remedy: Daily recite the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram, or the Shree Krishna Sharnam Mamah Mantra. Scorpio - October 23 - November 21 Scorpio natives shall be more interested in spirituality and charity work during this year. Besides, watch your health, as you are under the influence of Saturn's second phase of Sade-Sati, else you may be hospitalised. Actually, Lord Saturn provides good results only after hard work. You may also be inclined to think negatively as Saturn is transiting in your Sign. Hence, you should do yoga and prayanama exercises for maintaining good mental health, advises Ganesha. The presence of Jupiter in the House of Profession/Karma shall help to widen the scope of your activities. You shall also get an opportunity to work on large projects. However, as Rahu is in conjunction with Jupiter, you should remain cautious, else you may take wrong decisions or get confused while working. Those planning to buy a new house, or renovate/refurbish/redecorate their existing home should take care, otherwise the expenses may exceed your expectations. Moreover, you may have to suddenly leave your motherland or change your residence, due to Ketu's presence in the 4th House from 30-01-2016 onwards. Remedy: Perform Vrata (Vow/Puja) of Goddess Santoshi or Goddess Vaibhava Lakshmi on every Friday to attain wealth. Remedy: You shall gain by offering Hibiscus (Jasud) flowers to Lord Ganesha and reading the Atharvashirsha Paath or Sankatnashan Stotra. Capricorn - December 23 - January 30 The Lord of your Sign – Saturn will be transiting in the House of Gains throughout this year. Hence, any benefit coming your way may, most probably get delayed, for some reason or another. Elder brothers-sisters and friends shall cooperate. Saturn's 10th aspect on the 8th House, indicates that you should watch your health, especially when you are sick. You may also feel very anxious as seasonal ailments may frequently disturb your schedule. Moreover, Jupiter and Rahu are in conjunction in the 8th House. Thus, do not neglect your health, else some disease may suddenly recur. Also, remain cautious in speculative and stock market related activities. Your friends may walk away from you, during this period. You may suddenly get a legacy as Jupiter is posited in the 8th House from your Sign. Besides, you may be inclined to think negatively as Saturn is aspecting Capricorn Sign. Students might have to work hard, foretells Ganesha. Remedy: Students should light a lamp in front of Lord Shiva. This will increase your knowledge and help to achieve desired academic success. It will also guard you against any obstacles/difficulties. Aquarius - January 21 - February 19 Saturn - the Lord of your Sign will be transiting in Scorpio Sign, and through the House of Profession/Karma throughout this year. Luck shall be on your side, around the beginning of the year. Significant progress due to your efforts is also foreseen. Moreover, the Rajyog formed due to the conjunction of Venus and Saturn from 13-10-2016 to 0611-2016, indicates fame and success in your profession-business. This looks set to be a propitious year for those involved in overseas business. Yet, businesspersons should avoid giving goods on credit, as you may most probably be unable to recover your dues. This year is also favourable for those who are planning to change or renovate their residence. However, take care that the expenses do not exceed your estimated amount. Ones seeking a life partner may have to wait patiently till the end of this year. But, remember the fruit of patience is always sweet. Actually, Lord Saturn may cause delays, but finally provides good results. You may have a 'feel good' experience in public life as Jupiter is transiting through the 7th House from your Sign. Married ones shall enjoy marital bliss, predicts Ganesha. Remain cautious after Rahu starts transiting in the 7th House from 30-01-2016 onwards, else you may have a misunderstanding with your life or business partner. Pisces - February 20 - March 20 Jupiter - the Lord of your Sign will be transiting through the 6th House related to job, regular income, disease and enemy. This indicates good progress and results in your business-profession. Your popularity shall soar new heights. You shall be relieved from litigation, controversies and disputes, this time around. However, you may face minor or major obstacles, and also experience some situations which may test your patience, due to the negative influence of Rahu. The number of your opponents and enemies may increase, yet none of their ploys shall be successful. You may witness some adversities due to Saturn's presence in the House of Fortune. Besides, you may hurt the feelings of your father or some elderly person, for any reason, due to Saturn's malefic effect. Hurdles in your journeys and matters related to emigration/relocation is also foreseen by Ganesha. This period may be less beneficial for Pisces natives. Take care, else you may have a misunderstanding with your friends

How Bollywood celebrates Diwali Bollywood & Entertainment
DIWALI is that time of the year when most of Bollywood is on a break to celebrate the festival of lights with their near and dear ones. We bring to you the low-down on who throws the best parties in tinselville. Aamir
The perfectionist that Aamir Khan is, he ensures that his parties too are nothing less than perfect. Aamir and wife Kiran host an annual Diwali bash at their Bandra residence. However, as compared to the others, the scale of
the party is much smaller, as Aamir makes sure it is a close-knit affair. He prefers to serve his guests Mughlai food and biryani, a staple at his residence. His Diwali parties are also famous for all-night card sessions. Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, Ayan Mukerji, Karan Johar, Rajkumar Hirani, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Ashutosh Gowariker, Aamir’s nephew actor Imran Khan and his wife Avantika are regulars at this party. Shilpa The Kundras are known to throw extravagant parties. Their Diwali bash is meticulously planned to the last minute by Shilpa. The tradition started when the couple threw a housewarming cum elaborate Diwali bash in
2010 which was a huge hit with the guests. Since then, the stylish couple has decided to make it an annual affair. Bipasha Basu, Sanjay and Maanayata Dutt, Salman Khan and others were spotted as their guests in the past couple of years.
Bachchans When it comes to celebrating in style, no one in Bolywood does it better than Amitabh Bachchan and family. Every year, the annual
Diwali bash held at their bungalow, Jalsa, is one of the most awaited. Right from the décor to the menu, everything is carefully looked into by Jaya Bachchan. The bash in the past has seen the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, the Roshans, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor and filmmakers Ashutosh Gowariker, Ramesh Sippy, etc. Sachin Tendulkar too is a regular. Hrithik: The newest entrant to join the Diwali bash club is actor Hrithik Roshan. Though Hrithik’s dad Rakesh Roshan usually celebrates Diwali with his best friends Prem Chopra, Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor Hrithik threw the first bash of the season on Friday night. From Alia Bhatt to Bipasha Basu to Saif Ali Khan to Jacqueline Fernandes, the younger lot of B-town was present in full force.

Aussie cats in India Shah Rukh Khan and I miss each other: Deepika Padukone
AUSTRALIAN jazz cats, the Bart Stenhouse Group, have been invited to perform at the India International Guitar Festival in 2016, and a Pozible campaign might just help them get there. These Brisbane and Northern Rivers based musicians are the first Australian group to be invited to perform at the Indian festival. They will be showcasing their unique music, composed by bandleader Bart Stenhouse. ‘Our music blends elements of Jazz, Blues, Rock, Flamenco and North Indian Classical styles to create compositions that really engage the listener’, said Bart. ‘These are not musical cultures that are typically blended together, so we enjoy the challenge of creating
new grooves, harmonies and finding common musical ground around cultures of improvisation’. Bart Stenhouse has recently released two albums that feature the compositions they hope to perform at the festival. ‘This is an exciting opportunity for our band’, said Bart, ‘but to get there we need some support.’ To lend a hand and get some great rewards in the process, head over to www.pozible.com/indiaguitarfestival to support and help launch the careers of these local and talented musicians! • Deepika, 29, made her Bollywood debut opposite SRK in Om Shanti Om.
SHAH Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone may have three films together but she says she misses being a part of superstar’s films of late. Deepika, 29, made her Bollywood debut opposite SRK in Om Shanti Om and went on to work with him in Chennai Express and last year’s Diwali release Happy New Year. “I think there is a very pure equation that we share. More than anything, I think we miss each other. I miss being a part of some of the films he has done of late and I miss being around him on set,” Deepika told reporters at the poster launch of Mastani from her upcoming Bajirao Mastani. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali- directed perioddrama, which also stars Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra, will clash with Shah Rukh-Kajol starrer Dilwale on December 18. Recently, Shah Rukh had said that Deepika was his lucky charm and wished some of her luck rubs on him too for his upcoming release Dilwale. When asked about this, the Piku star said, “That’s him being kind and very, very generous that he always is. that. He is someone who is very fond of me as I am of him.” Deepika, however, is unfazed of the clash and is confident that the Rohit Shetty-directed film is going to be “massive.” “I am sure Dilwale is going to be a massive film. It has amazingly talented people in it, who have worked equally hard the way we have worked in our film. If the film does well, I don’t think it has to do anything with my luck, it is because of their talent and hard work.” HT

At Rio 2016, refugees will compete in Olympics for the 1st time: IOC Sports News
THOMAS Bach (pictured), the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced on Monday 9 November that highly qualified athletes who are refugees will be allowed to compete in the Olympic Games for the first time. IOC chief Bach made the announcement to the UN General Assembly which adopted a resolution urging all countries to stop fighting and observe a truce during the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Bach appealed to all 193 UN member states to help the IOC identify talented refugee athletes. “This will be a symbol of hope for all the refugees in our world, and will make the world better aware of the magnitude of this crisis,” he said. Until now, Bach said, qualified refugee athletes were not able to participate because they couldn’t represent their home country and its national Olympic committee. But he said the IOC has decided to welcome refugee athletes to the 2016 Olympics where they will live in the Olympic Village alongside the other 11,000 athletes from 206 national Olympic committees. “Having no national team to belong to, having no flag to march

behind, having no national anthem to be played, these refugee athletes will be welcomed to the Olympic Games with the Olympic flag and with the Olympic anthem,” he said. Currently, there are about 20 million refugees in the world — and the number is growing. The UN refugee chief, Antonio Guterres, said earlier this month that more than 500,000 refugees and economic migrants have entered Europe this year, and thousands more are following in their footsteps. Bach said the IOC has created a $2 million fund “to bring hope through sport to refugees.” “At the same time, we are assisting high-level refugee athletes to continue their sports careers,” he said. “We help them to make

their dream of sporting excellence come true even when they have to flee from violence and hunger.” But Bach said the IOC needs help in identifying more highlevel refugee athletes. He stressed that in Olympic sports, “all people are equal, regardless of their race, gender, social status, cultural background, faith or belief.” He said the Olympic Games are the culmination of this vision and the principle of non-discrimination. Bach alluded to world soccer’s corruption-hit governing body, Fifa, telling the General Assembly that the IOC “has ensured that we are in compliance with the highest standards of good governance and transparency.” “In this respect, we are asking
other major sports organizations to undertake the necessary and swift reforms in order to restore their reputation,” the IOC president said. The Olympic Truce resolution was introduced by Carlos Nuzman, president of the Rio organising committee, on behalf of the Olympic movement and Brazil. It was approved by consensus, with about 180 countries as cosponsors. It urges all UN member states to observe the truce starting seven days before the Olympics take place, from August 5-21, 2016, and lasting until seven days after the end of the Paralympic Games, which will be held from September 7-18, 2016. The resolution recalls an ancient Greek tradition where the legendary oracle of Delphi called for a cessation of hostilities to encourage a peaceful environment and ensure safe passage and participation of athletes in the ancient Olympics. The General Assembly revived the tradition in 1993 and has adopted resolutions before the summer and winter Olympic Games since then, but countries have continued fighting wars whether the Olympics are on or not. Felt like a ‘slave’ to Tiger Woods: Ex-caddy Steve Williams
OUTSPOKEN caddy Steve Williams has revealed that he sometimes felt like a “slave” to Tiger Woods and wanted to stop the champion American golfer from spitting on the course. Williams, who parted ways with Woods in 2011 after helping him win all but one of his 14 major titles, writes in a book released on Monday that he also felt tainted by the sex scandal involving the superstar athlete. The New Zealander claims he was hounded by the media after the story broke in 2009, but was still determined to stick by his friend. I did that even though people were accusing me of being an enabler, an accomplice, saying I was lying when I stated clearly that I knew nothing about this. For months on end, my life was absolutely miserable,” he says in “Out of the Rough”, written with journalist Michael Donaldson. Williams says he is often asked how he could not be aware of what he termed Woods’ “multitude of mistresses” but puts it down, in part, to the fact that their wives were close and Woods knew he would not approve. “Only a handful of his oldest buddies actually had any idea this was going on. I didn’t know because Tiger didn’t dare tell me,” he writes. “We had such a strong bond and working relationship that there was no way he could let me in on what was happening -- he knew my values and that I would have zero tolerance for that kind of behaviour.” Williams reports limited contact with his boss for months after the scandal broke, but they finally emailed and spoke and later met to hash out a future working relationship. “I was adamant that some of his behaviour on the course had to change,” he says in an excerpt of the book published in New Zealand’s Sunday Star Times. Rosberg wins 1st Mexican Grand Prix since 1992; Hamilton comes 2nd NICO Rosberg won the first Mexican Grand Prix since 1992 on Sunday 1 November for his fourth victory this season, denying Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton in his bid to tie the Formula One record of 13 victories in a season. Rosberg gained a sliver of satisfaction in defeating Hamilton, who has beaten him to the season championship the past two years. Hamilton, the runner-up, has 10 victories this season with two races left. Rosberg is now second in the driver standings ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Rosberg started from the pole and avoided the mistakes that doomed him a week earlier in the United States. He held off Hamilton at the start, and again over the final 13 laps as Hamilton closed in. Williams’ Vatteri Bottas finished third. Vettel started third but crashed on Lap 52 and didn’t finish. His race started with a punctured tire through the first turn. Formula One’s first race in Mexico in 23 years drew massive crowds, most of them cheering Force India’s Mexican driver Sergio Perez, who finished eighth. The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez was considered one of the rowdiest and dangerous circuits to drive when it last hosted Formula One, but was given a $50 million upgrade to resurface the track and modify the course. That softened its fearsome Peraltada turn, the site of spectacular, and occasionally deadly, crashes in previous years. The track also has the longest straight in Formula One, which put the power in Mercedes’ dominant engines up front. That’s where Hamilton had hoped to catch Rosberg at the start.

But Rosberg got the good jump he needed off the starting grid and beat Hamilton to the first turn. Hamilton tried a late move to pass on the outside but couldn’t make it, unlike his aggressive move in the US Grand Prix last week that forced Rosberg wide. From there, Rosberg had to manage his tires through two pit stops and hold off Hamilton late when Vettel’s crash brought out the safety car and all but erased the 3-second gap Rosberg built. When the racing restarted, Rosberg quickly pushed his lead over Hamilton back up to 1.5 seconds to chase the checkered flag. Vettel, who has enjoyed Ferrari’s resurgence this year with an improved engine and three victories, struggled from the start. He was quickly dropped to last when a bump with Red

Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in the first turn left Vettel with a tire puncture. Vettel was moving forward, picking cars off one by one, but his aggressive drive cost him when he spun through crashed on Turn 7 on Lap 52. Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was knocked out on Lap 23 in a clumsy bump with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas that broke the Ferrari’s right rear axle. Those two had a similar incident three races ago in Russia. It was the first time Ferrari had both cars not finish a race since 2006. McLaren’s season-long struggles with its new Honda engine continued when Fernando Alonso lost power on the first lap and had to immediately retire.
