Shanghaieye Feb. 13, 2010 New Shanghai sound walks available By Chris Gill Shanghai based sound artist Terence Lloren has announced his new sound art project is now up and running. “I have just completed a 6 month long soundwalk project called ‘Growing Up With Shanghai’ where I recorded soundwalks from 9 local shanghainese talking about their memories of a location in the Shanghai Municipality. The significant thing about these individuals (which was also an inspiration for the name) was that they were born after 1978 when China was being ‘reborn’ after the Cultural Revolution. Basically, as they grew up, Shanghai was also ‘growing up’. Their memories reveal intimate details as to how the places were back then but with a more intimate feeling. All the walkers speak in Shanghainese. I have self published a book of transcripts in English and Chinese with photos, maps, and info that help people actually walk the route that we took. Some routes are easy, some routes lead you through narrow passageways to another world. This project was recorded, designed, and printed in Shanghai. I have only printed 200 hand-numbered, limited edition, hand-wrapped, offset-printed, 300-page hardcover books for foreigners, locals, and expats to purchase and experience. Copies are already in both Boonna cafe locations for viewing and the book will be in art bookstores around Shanghai after CNY.” My favourite is the Xinhua Road one. Its quite a good project for practicing your Shanghai dialect.
