December Coach Speak

Coach Speak- December 2021 Bixby Spartan Football will be respected as the very best program in Oklahoma at developing student athletes.

Dear Spartans, We hope this letter finds everyone healthy and preparing for some much-needed time with family! What an amazing year 2021 turned out to be for our Bixby Spartan Football program! If you are reading this, you probably know that this year’s team won its fourth consecutive state championship, went 13-0 on the season, and set a new state record with 49 consecutive wins. To say the least, we had an excellent group of young men and women all pulling on the same end of the rope. We would like to thank everyone who has had a hand in the great run of success that we have had in this program. There are so many moving parts that make up a successful football program. We have some of the best parents, coaches, and administrators in the state. I often say that winning is not easy, and we never know what little thing we do right or wrong will win or lose us a football game. So, to everyone who believes in Spartan Football, please keep doing the little things you are doing to help make our program great. This year’s Crucible (leadership council) chose the value Grit as our 5th core value. The callback for Grit is “outwork to outlast.” This year’s group wanted that to be its calling card -- and I can say that our 2021 group demonstrated Grit all Summer and throughout the season. Last week our players ordered championship rings. Our Seniors have chosen an excellent, sharp-looking design that displays all seven of our state championship trophies. Once again, the best quarterback club in See December Update pg. 2

Coaches in the Classroom We did it again! We have had another Bixby Spartan Football coach become Teacher of the Year at his site. Offensive Coordinator Tyler Schneider was voted Teacher of the Year at our Brassfield Learning Center! Coach Schneider teaches math and history and has been a faculty member in Bixby for eleven years. We are proud of Coach Schneider for not only being a great coach, but being a great teacher as well!

December Update continued from pg. 1

Oklahoma will subsidize the cost of the rings so that each player will only be responsible for $100 of their ring’s total. If any family is unable to do that, please just contact Coach Montgomery. Our QBC truly goes above and beyond to provide the best playing experience in Oklahoma for our players, managers, and trainers. These last two weeks of the semester are extremely busy. We want to give our players some time to enjoy the season, but we are also working to move the program forward. Our Seniors have completed their anonymous exit evaluations of our program. All of the coaches are conducting exit interviews with our underclassmen, and Coach Myers has everyone starting a new off-season phase in strength and conditioning class. One of the most important things that we do during this time of year is to determine what second (or third) sport our players are transitioning to, and determine the best way to stay engaged with each athlete. The best way for us to do this is to make sure that each athlete continues their training with Coach Myers. Our year-round strength and conditioning is the single most important thing we do in our program, and it is fun watching this culture permeate many other sports at Bixby! I would be remiss if I did not mention a few of the records our team shattered in 2021. Most notably, we were able to take down Wagoner’s long-standing streak of consecutive wins. With our victory over Deer Creek, we set a new state record for 11-man football winning 49 games in a row. We had the highest scoring offense in Bixby history scoring an average of 61 points per game, and a defense that gave up only an average of 8 points per game. Along with our team records, Braylin Presley set the all-time rushing record at Bixby with a career total of 4,978 rushing yards! Needless to say, this season was a culmination of a tremendous amount of work on the part of so many people involved with our program. Finally, we want to thank everyone in our community for their unwavering support this season. The last two seasons have brought many challenges that we were able to overcome. Having a football season in the middle of a pandemic was extremely difficult, but through those challenges, our program grew stronger. Plowing forward, keeping a great attitude, and being able to adjust on the run are just a few of the things that make Bixby special. On behalf of our entire coaching staff, I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable holiday with loved ones. It’s a great day to be a Spartan! Sincerely, Coach Montgomery

Myers’ Monthly Minute Strength and conditioning is a science. You create a hypothesis based on observations and research, you test your hypothesis with a training cycle, you analyze the data, then you find conclusions that can help evaluate the effectiveness of your program. One way to increase the effectiveness of this process is the use of technology. Technology has become an integral part of strength and conditioning programs all the way from professional sports, to most recently, high school athletics. Recently, we have added two major pieces of technology at Bixby. These pieces will help evaluate, improve, and motivate our athletes. We have recently purchased a GPS system from TITAN Sports and a barbell velocity tracker from VMAX PRO. (Picture Below) The GPS system will be used to evaluate player load, speed, and total running distance during practice and games. This system will allow us to do a multitude of things. First, it will enable coaches to get feedback on how tough/easy practice was that day. This will give us objective data that will enable coaches to push athletes when they need to be pushed and pull back on workloads when needed. This will aid in keeping our athletes healthy and in optimal playing shape. The second benefit of the system is getting objective data to create offseason training programs based on practices and games. Many times, athletes will workout all Summer only to feel out of shape during the first practice or game of the year. Having the exact data will allow us to reverse engineer a program that will correlate to the running volume and speeds associated with our practices and the games. The velocity tracker will be used to track the bar speed of barbell movements such as the clean, squat, bench, deadlift, etc. All sports come down to one overarching principle: force. Whoever produces the most force is typically the fastest and strongest on the field or court. The equation for force is Mass x Acceleration. In the weightroom, the first part of the equation (mass) is easy to enhance. Simple strategies such as adding more weight on the bar from week to week can help increase the force production of an athlete by increasing the total mass lifted. The second part, acceleration, gets trickier. One way to do this in the weightroom is to increase bar speed. The method in which to do this is to take a weight and try to lift that weight faster each week. This sounds great in theory, but if you have no evaluation tools, then this can be hard for athletes and to measure objectively. With the velocity tracker, this becomes very easy to do and adds an objective measurement to increase acceleration of the bar and drive home intent with the athletes.
