Good afternoon Bixby Middle School Families!
Another busy month has flown by! Does the month of February or March seems shorter than the other months to anyone? Our focus for the month of March contains a crucial element that can determine success in the ever changing environment our students currently navigate. Problem-solving skills in academics, career preparations or even social interactions often serves as the base to build future success. Providing multiple opportunities for students to learn processes and techniques that foster their approach and confidence with problemsolving skills has now become more important than ever. Confidence in their approach to instill the perseverance needed to overcome the obstacles life places in front of them is especially important. Thank you for joining with us and creating those experiences with our students! Enjoy our newsletter and all of the successes our students are creating here at our Middle School!

SKILLFUL APPROACH TO ANXIETY MANAGEMENT
WE ALL HAVE ANXIETY, SOME MORE THAN OTHERS. IT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS AN OVERESTIMATION OF A PROBLEM WITHOUT THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO MANAGE THIS PROBLEM. WHEN THESE DISTRESSING THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT FUTURE EVENTS BECOME OVERPOWERING AND DISRUPT DAY-TO-DAY FUNCTIONING, IT CAN POSE CHALLENGES. NEGATIVE THOUGHTS, SUCH AS ANTICIPATING SOMETHING BAD, FEELING INADEQUATE, OR WORRYING ABOUT OTHERS' NEGATIVE OPINIONS, CAN FUEL ANXIETY'S TENDENCY TO CREATE A FRIGHTENING NARRATIVE. THESE CAN ESCALATE LEADING TO A CASCADE OF CATASTROPHIC THOUGHTS. PER LYNN LYONS, ANXIETY EXPERT, IT IS IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE THESE THREE THINGS IN YOUR PLAN. FOCUS ON THE THREE EX'S. EXPECT IT, EXTERNALIZE IT, AND EXPERIMENT. ANTICIPATE THAT THE WORRY WILL SHOW UP AND BE READY TO ADDRESS THESE FEELINGS. EXTERNALIZE IT. SEPARATE YOUR WORRY FROM YOUR IDENTITY. UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR WORRY IS A PART OF YOU AND NOT THE WHOLE MAKE UP OF WHO YOU ARE. EXPERIMENT BY IMPLEMENTING YOUR PLAN GRADUALLY WITH SMALL TASKS.

BMS THEATRE
THE BMS THEATRE STUDENTS' PRODUCTION OF HONK! JR, WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! DIRECTED AND CHOREOGRAPHED BY TONI ROSS WITH MUSICAL DIRECTION BY DEBBIE BAKER. THIS HEARTWARMING TALE OF THE UGLY DUCKLING CAME TO LIFE AT THE BIXBY HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM MARCH 1-2. IT INCLUDED FUN CHARACTERS LIKE THE CAT, BULLFROG, GOOSE SQUADRON, AND MANY OTHERS IN THE DUCKYARD. THESE STUDENTS SANG AND DANCED THEIR WAY INTO THE HEARTS OF AUDIENCES. THE PRODUCTION WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE AMAZING BHS TECHNICAL THEATRE TEAM. THIS MUSICAL HAS A GREAT MESSAGE AND INSPIRED EVERYONE TO SEE THAT "IN THEIR OWN WAY, THEY ARE A SWAN!"

BMS LEADERSHIP
The BMS Leadership students have been discussing ways to show kindness, compassion, and empathy to others. We've been focusing on how to be empathetic to those who are often seen but not noticed.
We visited Autumn Park and Pioneer Village's low-income retirement communities. Many of the residents don't drive or have much interaction with people outside their dwellings, especially since COVID shut down previously available transportation options. Our students distributed over 100 handmade valentines to residents. Each door received a special message, and several residents came to say hello.
It was heart-warming to see our students visit with them and share a smile and welcome from our school. As we were leaving, one of the ladies thanked us quite loudly and said it was the most excellent thing that had happened to her recently. I looked over just in time to see her offer a hug to a couple of our 7th-grade girls. The next thing I knew, one of our young ladies had decided to give hugs to others in the room. It was a lovely thing to witness.
