Dear Spartans, We hope this final installment of the 2023 Coach Speak newsletter finds everyone enjoying family, football, and some much-needed downtime. 2023 was an amazing year in our program. Your Spartans finished as undefeated state champions and ranked #25 nationally in the final MaxPreps National Rankings. Furthermore, this was our program’s tenth consecutive appearance in the state championship game, an Oklahoma state record. We would like to thank everyone who has had a hand in our program’s continued success. First and foremost, our program has excellent studentathletes who dedicate themselves to excellence in the classroom and on the field. We have an administration and school board who value the role that athletics play in the development of young people. Additionally, we have a staff that that is innovative, hard-working, and loves developing young people. Finally, we have a community that expects excellence and helps provide the resources necessary for this program to be the best at developing student-athletes. It truly takes everyone pulling on the same end of the rope to have the type of success our program has had over the last decade. Our 2023 Crucible chose “Relentless -- Love the Hunt” as its fifth core value and rally cry. This year’s group of seniors demonstrated being relentless each day by preparing with exceptional detail in each facet of our preparation. They had excellent attendance, attention to detail on the practice field, and were engaged in meetings. This year’s team raised the expectation for how Spartans prepare. See December Update pg. 2
December Update continued from pg. 1
Our student-athletes regularly get to play in some of the best Friday night atmospheres in the nation. This year we played in the second annual Battle of the Burbs at the University of Tulsa’s H.A. Chapman Stadium. We also played for a capacity crowd in a week 10, highly anticipated matchup against crosstown rival Jenks. Finally, it is always an honor to get to play in the state championship game, and once again, this year we played in front of a phenomenal crowd at UCO’s Chad Richison stadium in Edmond. The Bixby Athletic Department, led by athletic director Kate Creekmore, not only provides the best game-night atmosphere in the state for our players, but it promotes and advocates relentlessly for our student athletes and athletic programs. Our players recently ordered our 2023 state championship rings! We would like to thank the Bixby Quarterback Club for paying $100 for each player, trainer, manager, and creative team member’s ring. If we are fortunate enough to win a state championship, our seniors are allowed to design our championship ring. This year’s design is unique, featuring a removable ring top that is magnetized. We are anxiously awaiting our ring ceremony this spring semester! The last two weeks of the semester were very busy. We want to give our players time to enjoy the season, but we also immediately start preparing for next season by identifying areas for improvement in our program. All of our players complete anonymous exit surveys, and the seniors get to evaluate nearly every aspect of our program and give feedback. We also completed an exit meeting with each of our players to give them goals and targets headed into the 2024 season. And Finally, Coach Myers has adjusted our training protocol to our post-season phase that emphasizes technical aspects of our lifts and begins to increase volume of training. We are excited to come back full speed after the holiday break! One of the most important things we do as a coaching staff this time of year is to determine what second or third sport our players will transition to and to make sure each athlete is enrolled in our in-school strength and conditioning class. The best way for us to stay engaged with each athlete, and to ensure that they are properly developed, is to monitor them in their second sport, strength and conditioning class, and in the classroom. Our coaches will work hard during the off-season to develop and maintain lasting relationships with all of our players. Our year-round strength and conditioning program is the best in the state and the best thing we do as a program. Finally, thank you for your support of Bixby Spartan Football. We will be the best program at DEVELOPING student athletes, and it takes everyone being on the same page. Bixby Spartan Football has enjoyed great success, but we feel we have only scratched the surface of what is to come in the future. On behalf of our entire coaching staff, I hope everyone has a great holiday filled with joy and time spent with loved ones. It truly is a great day to be a Spartan! Sincerely, Coach Montgomery
Myers’ Monthly Minute As the year comes to a close, I would like to highlight some of what we have accomplished this year and some highlights of our athletes in our S&C program. •

Our mission statement for our program goes as follows: “Bixby Strength and Conditioning is committed to maximizing every student athlete's potential and developing their mind and body using holistic and appropriate training methods with an emphasis on process over outcome. We will be known in Oklahoma as developing the most well-rounded athletes, as well as training the greatest number of student athletes in Oklahoma.” This year we have trained 600+ high school athletes, 300+ middle school athletes, and 250+ freshman athletes. We have had 96 Male athletes join the 225 club in the clean this year. This is the most we have ever had. Last year we added the 135 club for our female athletes and had 14 girls meet that standard. 10 more girls are 10lbs away from this standard. We are setting up a big 2024 for our female athletes. This year we also tried to highlight athletes who are working hard and meeting the standard in our weight rooms. Each week we highlight our “athletes of the week”. This semester, we had 100 athletes who were awarded “athlete of the week” status. This semester we also introduced our Spartan Scores. This is a cumulative score based on several testing metrics. We have two scores: our Strength Score and our Athletic Score. Our Strength Score is based on the Clean, Squat, Bench, and Trap bar deadlift and is scored based on max weight and relative strength goals. Our athletic score is based on Attendance (The most important metric), Vertical Jump, Broad Jump, Vertical Power Index, Horizontal Power Index, Movement Score (Ankle Mobility , Hip Mobility , Overhead Squat), SL Squat Strength and Chin-Up Performance. The max score for each is 40 points. Our top 15 scores from end of the semester testing are posted below.
It has been a busy year for our S&C program. The goal is to keep growing and to set the standard as the best S&C department in Oklahoma.
