Choir Students Earn Coveted Spots in National Honor Choirs Kenneth Butler (BHS Senior), Alexia Sullivan (Junior), and Lillian Fowler (Freshman) were recently selected to sing in the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) National Honor Choir in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this upcoming March. These singers' participation in this event is generously sponsored by the Bixby Optimist Club. These students went through a rigorous audition process this past October, competing against hundreds of students from across the country for a limited number of spots in these prestigious choirs. They will spend several days learning from world-renowned conductors and singing with the best high school singers in the country. While in Pittsburgh, Bixby High School Choir Director Kevin Pearson will officially take office as the next President of OAKE, leading this non-profit organization in its mission to support music education of the highest quality, promote universal music literacy and lifelong music making, and preserve the musical heritage of the people of the United States of America through education, artistic performance, advocacy and research.

Visual Art Students Design and Create Visual Journals Recently, Art 2 and Art 4 students created their own Personal Visual Journals, utilizing cereal boxes donated by Bixby staff and teachers. They learned how to cut and trim them on a cutting board, glued and sewed their book pages and covers together, and embellished them with button clasps and beads. The covers were created by printing onto Gelli Plates with acrylic paint in the pattern and colors of their choice. Students learned how to problem solve and create something tangible that they can actually use -- whether at home during distance learning or in class with prompts and activities. Students will be tackling paper mâché projects next. Art 4 students will be creating large wearable paper mache heads while Art 2 students will create a monster/creature or animal of their choice. Stay tuned for an Art Show in the foyer under the clock tower after these assignments are completed.

BHS and BMS Joint Theatre Production is a Rousing Success Fifty-four students from the High School and Middle School Theatre Departments came together in late January for a collaborative production of the murder mystery comedy play Writing a Will Can Be Murder. High School Director Betty Fisher-Stanton and Middle School Director Toni Ross selected the play three years ago, but had not been able to perform it until this school year. The comedy follows a group of elderly Hollywood characters as they attempt to solve the murder of an aging film star who had just rewritten her will before she was murdered. The older characters were played by members of the high school department, while their younger selves in the production's numerous flashback scenes were played by the middle school actors. The play was also student-directed by junior Carlie Wilson (Red Cast), and junior Keira McSperrit (Blue Cast). The play was so successful, and such a fun project to work on together, that the directors plan on making a joint production an annual event.
