Windsor Tasked With 13,000 New Residential Units By 2031
In this space the Rose City Politics panel will analyze, breakdown, and critique a local political issue that affects each and every Windsor resident.
Windsor has been tasked by Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario with building 13,000 new residential units in a decade. For the May 2023 issue of Biz X, members of the Rose City Politics panel opine on the task at hand and the target.
skeptical voices point out that we’re unlikely to reach the target.
The province has made some significant adjustments to planning regulations over the past several months, including reducing parties with standing to appeal planning decisions and preventing municipalities from regulating residential infill, empowering property owners to convert single-family homes to multi-unit dwellings without approval.
Doug Sartori
Though Windsor’s City Council has endorsed the provincial commitment to building 13,000 new homes in the city over the next 10 years, and followed through by supporting additional full-time employees in the planning department at budget time,
Windsor currently produces about 500 residential building permits per year. Even if the city’s newly beefed-up planning department work tirelessly and produce the permits required to build 1,300 homes per year, builders have expressed concern that the capacity to construct this number of homes doesn’t exist here.
Provincial regulatory changes should be helpful overall, and the recent federal budget also offers housing supports in the form of funding for tax credits and housing initiatives. But, it is hard to see a sense of urgency from
Windsor Regional Hospital obtained the required zoning approval for the Sandwich South Secondary Plan (CityWindsor.ca/ residents/planning/Plans-and-CommunityInformation/Documents/SSSP%20D_ LandUse.pdf) which includes both that facility and extensive lands for housing, both low and medium density.
The secondary plan is dated 2012 and the zoning approval granted in 2018. We are told shovels will be in the ground in 2026.
Windsor has committed to building 13,000 units of new housing by 2031.
Many (including me) would prefer that housing be built through densification in the core.
any level of government that matches the public mood or the need on this issue.
There’s a shortage of labour in the building trades across the province, and it’s again hard to see how Windsor will develop or attract the skilled workers needed to meet the provincial target. The city missed an opportunity to access cheap money in the era of low interest rates, which will constrain our ability to act in the future.
Simmering public frustration over housing costs is perhaps the most encouraging factor.
If electors continue to identify access to housing as a top priority, governments at all levels will have to make increasingly serious efforts to respond.
It’s in the best interests of the public to demand more rather than accept the opening bid from government.

satisfactorily within the next 10 years Some examples of this include, but are not limited to: the development of the Sandwich South lands.” (My emphasis) (Refer to: CityWindsor.ca/cityhall/Budget/ Documents/Budget-2023/Section%201%20 -%20Capital%20Budget%20Report.pdf)
According to the City website, the Sandwich South Servicing Plan was to have been before Council in 2022.
Although there was a pandemic, it didn’t seem to slow down plans to construct the hospital in 2026, so it should not have slowed the approval and funding of the servicing plan.
Yet, here we are.
There are a million stories about housing in the unaffordable city. I’m going to write about one of the places we’re expected to build more — Sandwich South.
The Sandwich South lands were annexed from Tecumseh after amalgamation, in anticipation of city expansion.
But since the secondary plan is approved for Sandwich South, should we not be including this new housing in our aggressive approach to reach our goal?
But, we aren’t. Why? I wish I knew.
All I do know is that in the capital budget report for 2023, the city administration has stated “. . . there remains a number of key projects which may not be funded
We have 13,000 homes to build in the next 10 years.
Why are we leaving the Sandwich South component on the table?

Premier Ford’s demand for 13,000 new residential units in a decade in Windsor is more aspirational than realistic.
In order to meet the target, Windsor would have to roughly double the existing 500 residential unit permits processed annually, and some local home builders are already saying it’s impossible.
Windsor is faced with significant barriers to achieve the target with ongoing and upcoming projects requiring significant labour and resources, including the NextStar Energy EV Battery Plant and associated new supply chain, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, the WindsorEssex Hospitals System, new multidwelling projects, supply chain issues affecting material availability and costs, a lack of available zoned and serviced lands, and a province-wide construction and trades labour shortage.
Municipalities that don’t achieve the new time limits for development approvals must refund development fees, something Windsor’s City Planner told the Windsor Star could affect the corporation’s ability to “have growth pay for growth”.
Complicating things, Windsor is already building at full steam having issued 590% more building permits in February than January.
Moreover, Statistics Canada says the Windsor area has tripled the value of building permits year-over-year, the second largest nationally by percentage point.
Windsor needs more housing with a record low rental vacancy rate of 1.8% as of October 2022, according to The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and an affordable housing waiting list of 6,500. But, when City of Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens agreed to head Ontario’s Housing Supply Action Plan Implementation Team to offer advice on housing initiatives, he accepted a hefty job on top of an already significant task.
Premier Ford is set on 1.5 million new homes to be built provincially over the next decade and passed three pieces of legislation to achieve it, with a new housing supply action plan expected to soon pass.
Especially concerning in a city which placed a hospital on a literal 60-acre bean field, the latest plan encourages Ontario’s 29 largest and fastest-growing municipalities

New Program Promotes Hiring UWindsor Graduates
The Hire UWindsor campaign will help connect employers with the knowledge, expertise, and professional commitment of the University’s graduates, President Robert Gordon stated on March 22 at an event to launch the program.
“Whether a distinguished senior leader or a new graduate, University of Windsor alumni can be found giving back, ascending the ranks, and helping to build a vibrant community,” says Gordon. “Our faculty and staff are committed to enhancing the talent pipeline to industry.”
The University of Windsor Alumni Association, Co-operative Education & Workplace Partnerships, and Career Development & Experiential Learning are recruiting organizations to register as Hire UWindsor partners.
Representatives of Vista, Valiant TMS, and TD Bank Group were on hand to share stories of their success partnering with the University of Windsor as part of their recruitment strategies.
Geraldine Ymana (BComm 2010), an early talent acquisition specialist for
TD Bank Group, expressed excitement at the prospect of tapping into the source of employees.
“The students here are so well-rounded and have been able to really make an impact on our organization,” she says, noting the experiential learning opportunities afforded students in professional programs.
Mike Van Nie (BA 1999), Senior Human Resources Manager for Valiant TMS, comments how the advantages of partnering with the University are invaluable to his company.
“As Valiant TMS has successfully made the transition from a local tooling supplier for the automotive and aerospace industries to a global automation solutions provider, the University of Windsor has been a key partner in supplying the talent needed to make this happen,” he states.
Van Nie listed engineering, accounting, human resources, sales and marketing as departments that have hired UWindsor alumni.
“It’s great to see the region learning to harness our home-grown talent in
developing economic opportunities — especially for those who want to stay,” he indicates.

Congratulations to Active Body Physical Therapy, 1765 Sprucewood Avenue in LaSalle on its 20th anniversary! To celebrate, the business is expanding to 6,000 sq. ft. to better serve the community. JP Chartrand first opened Active Body Physical Therapy in November 2003 and this is his fourth expansion of physical space to ensure they can meet the demands and needs of their clients and fantastic staff. Back then Chartrand was the only physiotherapist with one other staff member and now the team has expanded to seven physiotherapists, eight massage therapists, two chiropodists, one chiropractor, one athletic therapist and kinesiologists with numerous skills sets — all with one goal — to give each and every client a great experience. “I knew that in order to best help people, I had to surround myself with the best team,” states Chartrand. They offer a wide variety of related services, including: physiotherapy, concussion therapy, athletic therapy, foot care, orthotics, chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, ergonomics, lymphatic drainage therapy, work hardening, and hydrotherapy. Since people want to live active physical lifestyles, they operate under the slogan “Recover, Move, Live” and their team is there to help for the full spectrum of injuries; from after a surgery, neck pain after a car accident, or an athlete with a sore shoulder. the physical space to continue to offer this personalized approached to therapy. My vision was always to be a community leader in health care promotion and prevention and that is what we offer at Active Body Physical Therapy.” Their location is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and massage is available on Saturday. Slinky’s 100 Lesperance Road, Tecumseh,
ON
By David Clark Photos courtesy of Blink Photography
Slinky’s — the east end ice cream headquarters located by the river in Tecumseh — opened for the season in midApril and is ready to serve you and your family!
Customers have been waiting all winter (the storefront is closed from October to April) to enjoy their regular favourites and check out the new menu items, which are guaranteed to give you an unforgettable experience of flavours.
Originally opened by the Tessier family in 1983, Slinky’s celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023 by honouring its past, but moving forward to the future by perfecting their new ice cream cakes and looking at potential new offerings so people can enjoy their ice cream all year round.
According to Owner/Operator, Kim Maillet-Dolfi: “I took over the helm at Slinky’s in 2022 as the sole owner, previously a part owner since 2020, keeping on board many of the previous owner’s employees. Many are still here today, coming with experience and capable hands. My enthusiastic employees are the key to us delivering a superior experience and we are grateful that so many of them return every season.”
With those employees and incredible ice cream treats for just about everybody,
Slinky’s was honoured to have earned the 2021 Platinum Award for Best Ice Cream by CommunityVotes Windsor. Additionally, in 2021 and 2022 they were recognized as the Best Ice Cream/Dessert Restaurant by the Windsor Star’s Best of #YQG.
ice cream palette. Whereas the seating features stand-up tables, most customers prefer to sit outside on the benches or take a stroll down the Ganatchio Trail or enjoy the waterfront along Riverside Drive where you will find Chippewa Park.
They are humbled by the support, but the greatest reward is serving their loyal customers and seeing their happy faces when they enjoy all they have to offer.
Once inside the shop, you will also appreciate the seriously retro ’50’s era ice cream parlour look.
A major renovation in 2021 was designed to accommodate the customers with even more upgrades to create products for your
“People from as far away as LaSalle come to see us for many reasons, but also for unique offerings including ‘old school’ frozen yogurt, milkshakes and Dole soft serve, a light and refreshing frozen treat for those who can’t consume dairy,” says Maillet-Dolfi. “Also, Slinky’s offers other special diet treats where they have both hard scoop, plant-based ice cream and soft serve options. These and the vegan certified vanilla

soft serve can be made into shakes, ice cream cakes and specialty sundaes.”
Ice cream cakes were introduced last December and due to the incredible feedback they received, the cakes are now sold all year round even when the doors are closed.
Customers can order cakes via the Slinky’s website (see below).
The existing website will soon be traded in for a new site this season with all the bells and whistles and online ordering on their customizable cakes that include endless options. All of the cakes are made by their talented staff in various themes, including Christmas, birthdays or other special events.
Slinky’s also offers a catering option, utilizing their huge ice cream mobile cart and sundae bars. It’s ice cream on wheels!
The ice cream cart holds six full-sized tubs for catering, having operated at events like the Tecumseh Fireworks, Optimist Fishing Derby, business gatherings and schools for proms and large celebrations. It can also be rented for private events such as birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, showers and more. For smaller gatherings (under 50 people) the sundae bar can go right to your door loaded with some of the most popular items from the shop.
Other flavours that draw in the customers are Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Mint Chocolate Chip.
Regarding the soft ice cream, you may choose chocolate or vanilla; however, even better, is the swirl of the two. They can be dipped in chocolate or with peanuts to tickle your fancy. Look into the fresh strawberry sauce too.
“For the frozen yogurt choices, you have raspberry with Skor and cream cheese and the strawberry with graham cracker,” notes Maillet-Dolfi. “My favourite frozen yogurt combination and product in the shop is the Blueberry Cheesecake. I’m obsessed with it . . . it’s just so good!”
If you crave a big ice cream dish, the Banana Split is right up there and the Hot Fudge Brownie previously mentioned.
root beer are a refreshing blast from the past! For kids, hard ice cream flavours like Moon Mist, Spiderman, Birthday Cake and Unicorn Toots, are popular picks.
Even before Maillet-Dolfi arrived at Slinky’s, the treat leader of the pack for customers, was and still is, the Hot Fudge Brownie.
Not surprising, when you seek hard ice cream, chances are you will get into the classics including chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.
The Dirt in Worms option anchors the three with hard ice cream, hot fudge, crushed Oreo cookies and gummy worms.
Always nice is a cold shake on hot summer nights. Try the classic cookies and cream and milk, which is blended to perfection with the vintage shake machine. Hawaiian Smoothies do it for many, and the ice cream floats with
As Maillet-Dolfi explains: “Slinky’s has been a tradition for families in Tecumseh for 40 years, and our goal is to maintain that tradition for generations to come. We love it when customers bring in their kids to recreate the pictures that they took with their parents (and grandparents) when they were kids. Hopefully, we will see that continue for many years to come.”

Windsor Essex Businesses
COVER STORY By Jim Murphy
From birthdays and graduations to holidays, parties are a staple of our lives.
Whether you want the party to come to you — or you go to a facility — we have you covered!
The businesses we feature in this edition have everything you need from plates and napkins, tents and inflatables to lawn signs, food machines, games and more, if you are hosting a party — for the little ones, teenagers or adults — indoors or outdoors.
And many of them can even help with any big public events you might be involved with as well.
In addition, after reading this story you will learn that local party suppliers are not just about selling products, but also about providing inspiration and making your partyplanning process easier!
It’s All Fun & Games And Inflatables Too
Started in 2018 by Jeremy Pillon and his son Lyndon, Castle Kings Windsor — working out of a LaSalle location — specializes in inflatables for private parties and corporate events (not open to the general public) as well as providing tables, chairs, heaters, games, costume characters and food machines.
Castle Kings Windsor rents out front yard inflatables to celebrate milestones, including bouncy castles, large waterslides, combo units with a bouncy castle and slide together, and slip n’ slides. They also carry games such as an inflatable axe throw, soccer darts, cornhole, giant Connect Four, ladder ball and more. They offer tables and chairs, heaters, small tents and shelters, and a wide variety of friendly mascot costumes.
In addition, they rent out food equipment like popcorn makers, snow cone makers, and cotton candy makers. And we can’t forget their backyard movie packages for large scale events!
“We are always adding more products so it’s best to check our website or reach out to see if we have what you need,” Pillon indicates. “Castle Kings offers something for everyone age two to 90. So, if you’re having a party and want to add something fun, check us out!”
As a family run business, the father and son team have built their business on wordof-mouth and they love to be involved in helping people make memories fun and easy.
“This means we are really focused on making sure each customer has a great experience when they rent from us,” Pillon tells Biz X. “Offering a wide range of unique products is another way we stand out from the competition.”

Pillon always ensures customers get a topnotch delivery experience that is on time, professional, stress-free, and friendly.
“Many people are of the opinion that all rental companies are alike, but we like to think that Castle Kings is a cut above — and our customers agree,” says Pillon. “We have clean, new products and we keep our inventory up to date. We use the latest technology to schedule rentals, track deliveries and communicate with our clients, which ensures a smooth and easy rental experience. We truly believe that great customer service is the backbone of our business.”

Tents And More For Every Special Occasion
Located at 4595 County Road 46, RR#3 in Maidstone, Festival Tent & Party Rentals has offered event rental equipment for any occasion you can imagine, since 1987.
According to Lea-Ann Suzor, President of Festival Tent & Party Rentals: “For 36 years in business, honesty, integrity and the quality people that work at Festival have made us the number one choice for party rental in Essex County. But, what really separates our staff from our competitors is unparalleled experience and our reputation for outstanding service.”
Suzor is a Certified Event Rental Professional, as designated by the Canadian Rental Association and the American Rental Association.
The company is also the 2015 Biz X Award winner for the category, Tent Rental Company Which Covers All The
Bases.
Festival Tent & Party Rentals has two distinct divisions: The Party Division — providing tents and event equipment, and the Portable Toilet Division — servicing the residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sectors.
THE PARENTING BIZ
“The anchor of the Party Division is our tent rental, ranging in size from 100 square feet to 18,000 square feet,” Suzor explains. “They are professionally installed to meet all provincial and municipal regulations. Tent accessories include tent flooring, lighting, heating, cooling and exit signs. We also carry a complete line of tables, chairs, and linens.”
And since all gatherings require tableware, they offer china, glassware, flatware, serving pieces and charger plates — all can be returned clean or dirty.
They also carry coffee urns, chafing dishes, BBQs, champagne fountains, and draft beer dispensers.
“The fun never ends with our volleyball nets, putting greens, big Jenga games, three-in-one poker mats and the new giant PLINKO,” Suzor adds. “For children’s parties we have the favourites like candy floss machines, snow cone makers, popcorn poppers and nacho cheese machines. Don’t forget red carpets and stanchions with ropes, crazy pink lawn flamingos, microphones with speakers and our 18-foot-high wind dancers, available in several colours and seasonal characters.”
The Portable Toilet Division offers basic porta john units, units with sinks and units with flush toilets and sinks.
They also offer wheelchair accessible units and provide service to weekend events and monthly contracts for long-term rentals. Monthly contracts include weekly cleaning, and they can also provide pumping and maintenance of client-owned temporary sites.
“We strive to assist our clients in overcoming any obstacles that may arise while planning a milestone event,” points out Suzor. “As we recognize that all of life’s milestones are important and worth celebrating, we want to make the experience as pleasant and stress free as possible for the host.”

Inflatables, Games & Movies, Oh My!
Bringing inflatable fun to the party since 2008 (with assistance from Judy Parker), Redline Inflatables specializes in providing Technical Standards and Safety Authority in Ontario (TSSA) with licensed back yard rentals for public, corporate and
Owner/Operator Dan Gates of Redline Inflatables says his mission is to bring people together to have fun, to take time outside of their busy work lives and laugh. And that’s just what one local family did on a beautiful spring day in April. They rented a Spiderman inflatable that incorporates a ramp, so the kids can bounce and slide for maximum fun! On the slide are Nash Fowler, Nate Fowler, Callum Myers (the Birthday Boy who turned three), Scarlett Peladeau, Nolan Peladeau and Kensley Kauric.

“Our great selection and service separates us from our competition,” asserts Dan Gates, Owner/Operator of Redline Inflatables who claims to be “the only local inflatable company that is TSSA licensed to set up and operate inflatables at public events. A public event is any event not on someone’s personal property, but if you have an event on your personal property and advertise it to the public, then it becomes a legal public event.”
Gates goes on to explain that Redline Inflatables also carries the requisite licensing and insurance for public events.
“We work hard to keep our equipment clean,” he stresses. “We use proper 18 X 1 inch stakes to secure our inflatables for safety, and Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) certified blowers, which is not the case with most of the small operations, as I’ve seen a lot of unacceptable and unsafe installations in my travels. We’ve done thousands of events without injuries because we are careful to enforce safety rules.”

Pick A Card, Any Card
Curbside Cards has specialized in yard card celebrations since May 2021, meaning they’re celebrating their second anniversary, which is appropriate for this story.
Working from a Windsor location, the business offers both outside and indoor celebration sign rentals, backdrops, photo ops, gift baskets, scavenger hunt props, and photo shoot props for all ages (and fur friends too!).
“Our design, layout and custom inventory separate us from our competitors, and since we aren’t part of a franchise we have a lot more freedom in what and how we offer our services,” says Stacey Bennett,
Co-Owner of Curbside Cards along with her son, Steven Bennett. “We have even been called the ‘birthday fairies’ as we try our best to set up after dark the night before, since we hate to ruin a surprise. We love it when customers give us feedback on how excited their child was when they first saw their happy birthday yard card waiting for them when they headed out to start their special day.”
Bennett is also very proud of their
community involvement and the connections they have made.
“Windsor Essex families now get to see us at parades, ‘trunk-and-treats’, holiday festivities and similar events,” she lists. “We recently introduced our newest friend Cely (short for celebration), a five-foot bear that has welcomed little ones to JK registration, cheered on our community for Random Act of Kindness Day, and other special celebrations. (He’s a busy guy!).”

“We help others celebrate the people and moments that matter most to them, plus we get paid for it,” she says. “The more we can support our community the faster our business grows. We have had the privilege of sponsoring schools, partnering with local charities like the Windsor/ Essex County Humane Society, Up About Down (Windsor-Essex Down Syndrome Association), and the Windsor Cancer Foundation. It’s so great to be a part of people’s special moments — from gender reveals, baby announcements, and first birthdays — as kids grow, we are there to celebrate with them in their yards, at schools and in the community.”

Their staff of 20 provide small/large party tents, tables, chairs, lights, jumping castles, inflatable obstacle courses, inflatable slides and gladiator jousts, for backyard parties.

They even help with plans for parties for children of all ages, especially from first birthdays to teenagers with their jumping castles and inflatables.
“Our 17 years in the business helping people plan awesome parties and events, have given us the experience to help plan parties and events for all our customers, as well as our three children,” Owners of The Party Rental Company Lisa and Don Malek proudly state. “What also makes us unique is that we are a one stop shop; you can get everything you need for a special birthday party at one place.”

Lisa and Don go on to explain that they love to see family and friends gather and spend time together.

Five Simple Steps For Better Mental Health
Supplied By The WECHU
Mental health is health, and feeling well is affected by many different things in our lives.
Making big changes to daily routines can feel overwhelming, but adding just one or more activities from the steps listed below to your routine, can help you and your family experience higher levels of well-being.
The small changes you make today can add up to big differences over time.
Five Simple Steps A Family Can Do Together For Better Mental Health And Well-Being
1. Get Active Together with your family and loved ones. This can include going for walks, biking, playing sports, or dancing in the living room. These activities are not only fun, but can also improve relationships, foster a supportive environment, and boost teamwork. Regular exercise can reduce stress, depression, and anxiety, and can support better sleep. Regular exercise also releases endorphins, which can enhance mood and reduce pain.
2. Practice Gratitude by taking turns sharing what you are grateful for at dinner,
or keep a family gratitude journal. Regularly expressing gratitude can bring you closer to the people you care about, boost positive feelings, and reduce feelings of stress.
3. Encourage Open Communication by letting everyone in the family express their feelings and creating a safe space for them to do so. Listen carefully to what they have to say and offer encouragement and support when it is needed.
4. Prioritize Self-Care by reminding your family members to take care of themselves. Simple activities like reading or taking a relaxing bath, can go a long way to promoting self-care. Remember that your own self-care is important too.
5. Practice Mindfulness by teaching your family to be present in the moment through meditation or breathing exercises. Taking a few minutes each day to block out distractions can reduce stress and improve well-being.
The first week of May is the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Mental Health Week and a great time to think about how
these wellness tips can fit into your daily routine. Remember that mental health is affected by all aspects of our lives, from our diet to our social connections and beyond.
Physical activity is a great first step toward better well-being as it not only keeps your body healthy, but can improve your mood.
While it may be hard to find the time and energy to focus on your well-being, especially when you’re busy, there are still many small things that you can do starting today without making big changes to your routine.

Healthy Vision, Hearing & Speech
By Dr. Abeer Ahmed
May is Healthy Vision Month and also Speech & Hearing Month, highlighting the crucial role these senses and healthy communications contribute to the quality of our daily lives.
The eye and the ear are the outer receptors for the visual and auditory systems, respectively, sending picture and sound information to the brain, which processes them to give us meaning to what we see and hear.
When the pictures and sounds are clear, it is easy for the brain to interpret them, store them, and retrieve them upon demand.
Focus On Healthy Vision
Vision goes beyond visual acuity of 20/20, to many other visual skills that greatly impact our functioning efficacy.
These skills include Eye tracking to moving objects and Eye zooming or
accommodation to switch to clear focus, near and far, quickly.
Poor tracking leads to difficulties with reading, driving and sports.
Another skill is Eye teaming, which is using both eyes in coordination, to focus on objects during tasks like reading.
Eye teaming is important in depth perception, which allows seeing the space between objects in space and it is important for driving, sports, navigating stairs, and watching 3D movies.
Poor eye teaming causes double vision, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.
As for visual processing skills, they include visual memory, visual sequential memory and visual processing speed that can impact our overall efficacy and productivity.
Also, visual figure ground, which is
recognizing objects in noisy visual fields and visual closure, which is making whole pictures out of parts.
Steps to maintain healthy vision include regular eye exams, sunglasses with UV protection, reducing screen time, and visual hygiene for near work. Visual hygiene includes blinking and taking breaks to look far away to relax the eyes.
Hear, Hear
Hearing plays a crucial role in speech production and speech perception, leading to effective communication, which is key for academic and professional development.
Individuals with hearing impairment may have difficulty accurately perceiving the sounds they need to produce words to speak correctly.
This can lead to issues with articulation,

pronunciation, and overall speech intelligibility.
We are born with a certain number of auditory sensory cells in the inner ear, and we lose some of them as we age and when they get damaged by loud sounds.
The louder the noise, the faster the damage is caused.
According to the World Health Organization, although users of portable listening devices should not exceed a safe level of 80 dB for 40 hours a week, many of them expose themselves to the same level of sound in 15 min. of music at 100 dB.
Individuals with hearing loss may struggle to accurately distinguish between certain sounds.
Hearing loss can also affect an individual’s ability to monitor their own speech, leading to difficulties with self-correction and the development of more complex language skills, such as grammar and syntax.
Hearing impairment is not only about hearing loss.
There are many auditory processing skills that are essential to auditory performance.
Examples are auditory discrimination between sounds that are similar, but distinct, and auditory memory, sequencing, and processing speed, which are important for remembering names, phone numbers, and learning.
Other processing skills are auditory figure ground, which is focussing on specific sounds in noisy environments, and auditory reasoning, which is the ability to understand auditory information logically and draw conclusions.
Poor reasoning results in difficulties understanding sarcasm, inferences and implied meaning in speech or reading. Auditory synthesis is the ability to pull together sounds into a meaningful whole.
To maintain healthy hearing, avoid noisy places and, if necessary, protect your ears with noise-cancelling headphones.
You can also protect your sensory cells by replacing regular headphones with bone conduction headphones.
Regular audiograms detect sensitivity discrepancies among different frequencies, as well as early hearing loss.
Prioritizing the health of your vision and hearing is an investment in the quality of your daily life.

The First Line Of Defence . . . EaveSafe Gutter Protection
By Dave Halliday
With the storm knocking out the power, you are stuck staring out of the window at the wind, rain and lightening, in the dark.
It is almost relaxing until you notice the cascade pouring down as your eavestrough sags under the weight of the water and presumably a clog due to the tree buds and leaves.
You have to clean the gutters again!
So, the next morning you are out trying to set the ladder legs on a soggy lawn. Teetering, you blindly reach into the trough and a dark mixture of partial decomposed organics splash down onto you as you nearly fall from the ladder as you recoil . . . enough is enough!
You reach out to the good people at EaveSafe Gutter Protection Inc., who you recently chatted with at the Windsor Home & Garden Show
The company has seven locations; a mobile branch in Windsor and additional offices in Sarnia, Chatham, St. Thomas, Woodstock, and Kitchener-Waterloo with the head office in London (learn more on: EaveSafe.com).
EaveSafe Gutter Protection has been providing professional and affordable gutter protection, as well as gutter cleaning, gutter repair and new seamless eavestrough installations, for the noted communities for the past six years. Nicholas Waldram, their General Manager, was kind enough to share some insight based upon his 10 years of personal experience in the field.
What guidance can you offer a client who is experiencing issues with their roof gutters? “Maintenance is everything!” Waldram replies and continues: “Ensuring the gutters are clean will extend the life of your gutters by decades, as the weight of debris, water and ice will slowly pull your
gutters down until they begin to fail and eventually fall off your home.”
What are the warning signs that one’s roof gutter system requires attention?
“If you notice water in your basement, nine times out of 10 it’s because your gutters aren’t functioning properly as they could be leaking, clogged, misaligned or damaged,” he notes. “A regular cleaning schedule or installing gutter guards will ensure your gutters last for many years to come.”
Do you provide maintenance services for existing gutter systems and what would that maintenance typically include?
“We offer professional and affordable cleaning and repair services,” indicates Waldram. “Whether its sealing leaks, re-sloping, re-fastening, replacing hangers and nails, or just simply cleaning . . . EaveSafe has you covered.”
What is the importance of a functional roof gutter system to a given structure?
“Gutters channel the flow of water away from the foundation and are essentially your home’s first line of defence,” he states.
“Water near your foundation will freeze in the winter and cause the concrete to spall and
crack, potentially weakening the structure of the home and can also cause basement flooding in extreme scenarios.”
What is a gutter guard system and how can it be of benefit? “Gutter guards eliminate the need for yearly cleaning and will help protect your gutter system from waste and damage,” points out Waldram adding “We warranty our gutter guards for 40 years. So, if any debris accumulates inside your gutter or on top of our guard, all you need to do is call, and we’ll come clean it free of charge.”
How often should one have their roof gutter system reviewed and maintained?
“Typically, gutter systems should be inspected and maintained on a yearly basis,” responds Waldram, cautioning: “If you live in an area with dense tree cover, however, you may need to do this two to three times per year.”
When you provide a client with a new gutter system, what can he/she expect before, during, and after the installation? “We tear down and dispose of your old gutter system for you and will install your new system all in one day,” he says. “We have worked hard to make the purchase and fulfillment experience as quick and painless as possible.”
As usual in this area more storms blew through a week or so after the installation of your new gutter guards, but this time things are different.
As you watched the wind and rain batter your home you are now content with the security and function of your gutter system!
The power, on the other hand, was once again out . . . wonder if they can make a power guard system?

EVENT PROFILE 21st Annual ICHA Fishing Derby June 3, 2023 At Assumption Park
By Julianna Bonnett
The Italian Canadian HandiCapable Association (ICHA) is once again hosting its annual Fishing Derby for individuals in the community with physical or intellectual disabilities.
The event — now in its 21st year — offers participants the opportunity to go fishing in a controlled and safe environment.
According to the Fishing Derby Founder and Director, Pat Pagano, the motivation behind this event is to give individuals (at no charge) with a physical or intellectual disability living in our community, the opportunity to experience the sport of fishing.
The Fishing Derby takes place on June 3 at Assumption Park in Windsor, on the Detroit River, with support of their new official sponsor, the Alan Quesnel Family Foundation
The event is supervised by local professional fishermen and supported by organizations such as the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ontario Federation
of Anglers and Hunters, the Canadian Coast Guard, outdoor companies, and local bait and tackle shops.
“A donation or sponsorship provided will be used to offset costs associated with holding the event scheduled for June 3,” Pagano indicates. “This event goes a long way to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities living in the Windsor Essex area.”
In addition to fishing, a picnic is also held, with entertainment provided by Music Express, Canada’s premier show band, a magic show by ATTILA, and The Snow Sisters from Enchanted Adventure Parties. As well, Italo Labignan, Host of the Canadian SportFishing TV Show, is attending.
Prizes will be given out to all participants, and contributions from the community are greatly appreciated.
With 200 participants being the attendance goal, Pagano shares his outcome for this year’s Derby: “We hope to have another successful
event with the help of many sponsors and volunteers, along with cooperation from the weather and the fish!”
For more information on the event, email: pat.pagano@sympatico.ca or visit: ICHA.ca and: Facebook.com/ICHAFishingDerby.

AWARDS SPOTLIGHT
TWEPI’s 8th Annual Awards. . . Best Of Windsor Essex
Photos courtesy of TWEPI
Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) announced the winners of the 8th annual Best Of Windsor Essex Awards (BOWE) as voted on the website: BestOfWindsorEssex.ca.
“Now in its 8th edition, the Best Of Windsor Essex Awards celebrate the best things to see and do in Windsor Essex, and allow the voters to have a voice to what we showcase as some of the best of our region,” explains Gordon Orr, CEO of TWEPI. “Even though we saw over 8,000 votes come through the campaign, some of the awards come down to a couple of dozen votes between first and second place, truly demonstrating the interest in residents to celebrate their favourite places to eat, drink, shop, play and stay in Windsor Essex.”
So what was the process used to determine the final winners?
Voting for the awards took place over three weeks between February 6 and 26, 2023, to allow individuals to let TWEPI know about their favourite spots in all 47 categories.
The final tally saw 237 finalists competing to earn a BOWE Award.
The list is then shared with the world to help inspire future travel and TWEPI website users to create unique itineraries — some of the over 5 million visitors that come to the region each year.
“Though we continue to see growth in the tourism industry, 2022 was still another challenging year for businesses,” Orr comments. “The number of votes for the Best Of Windsor Essex Awards campaign showcases how important a local audience is to help our tourism and hospitality businesses thrive, but also how devoted their customers are to celebrate their successes.”
Voting categories included the best in: Arts & Entertainment, Attractions & Events, Drink, Food, Outdoor Adventure, Photo Op, Shopping, and Stay.
Winners were announced during a broadcast media event March 29, on Facebook and YouTube, which you can still view online via: YouTube.com/watch?v=nQTHIjzQDjg.
Each winner receives a commemorative plaque, a letter of congratulations and bragging rights.
They are also included in the 2023/2024 Official Visitor Guide released in late April, and branding at: BestOfWindsorEssex.ca.

2475 McDougall Street: 50 Years Of Health Care Services And 30 Years For Windsor Squash & Fitness Club
Story And Photos By Joe McParland
The property at 2475 McDougall Street — currently the site of Windsor Squash & Fitness Club and the Jackson Park Health Centre — has a 50 year footprint of services associated with health care.
It started in 1973 as a fitness and exercise business with Windsor Indoor Tennis. One of the original owners, Sam Tissot, informs me: “The other owner/partners were Gord Marsh, Paul Saddy, Ken Stewart and Dick Kaiser.” He continues by describing the facility as having “Four indoor tennis courts and some fitness equipment, and then in 1980, racquetball courts were added.”
In 1994 some of the original owners of Windsor Indoor Tennis were beginning to look towards retirement and to take on some new partners. That’s when Tom and Marcy Porter (Tomarcy Services Ltd.) became part owners and facility operators, and by the year 2000, they were the sole owners.
The ownership group also recognized that a major change was needed in 1994.
As Tom recalls: “The owners we’re looking for a way to make the tennis part of the building more profitable because tennis had been draining away over the years. When the pleasant weather came people stopped playing tennis indoors and went over to Jackson Park and other places to play outdoors.”
At the same time, the popular Wheels RollerSkating on Dougall Avenue was sold to become a bingo hall. But some of the Wheels’ owners still wanted a successful roller-skating business.
So, the two ownership groups met, negotiated, and formed a new partnership.
The 25,000 square foot tennis court building
was converted into the highly popular Wheels, The Skatin’ Place and the children’s Hyper Space PLAYLAND.
The fitness club expanded to 24,000 square feet to include larger fitness areas, a doubles squash court, and five international single squash courts. Members could choose between squash, or an exciting game of racquetball called UK Racketball that is played on a regular squash court and is similar to squash.
Windsor Indoor Tennis was rebranded as Windsor Squash & Fitness Club and is now in its 30th year of operation.
Six weeks before the official opening of their renovated facilities, a major fire shut down the squash and fitness facility and the roller-skating rink for almost nine months for repair and reconstruction. Both reopened in late 1995.
The new partnership arrangement worked
out well. The squash and fitness club grew in membership. It was much more than just a gym.
“What gave us an edge is the club atmosphere,” says Marcy. “A lot of people came and worked out, then met with their friends here, had a drink and turned it into a social event.”
Reflecting on the successful co-joining of a roller-skate rink with the fitness facility, Tom adds: “There was a real synergy between the two areas. People could walk, run, or blade in the rink. We had ‘strollercize’ and seniors’ classes as well. Some people stopped and did weights to cross train.”
As parents raising a young family, Tom and Marcy benefitted from having part time jobs in the club readily available for their children Brian, David, Mark and Erin — and for their children’s many friends and the neighbour kids.
The Porter’s oldest son, Brian, managed the

family business (both squash & the health club and the roller-skate rink) for 15 years. This gave him a solid foundation for his current successful career in the financial industry with TD Bank
Youngest son, Mark, who learned the game of squash in his parent’s club is currently Assistant Athletic Director at The Toronto Lawn Tennis Club one of the nation’s most prestigious and historic private clubs — where he has coached squash since 2011.
He had a successful collegiate career in squash at the University of Western Ontario and today is playing doubles on the Squash Doubles Association (SDA) Pro Tour, competing in events in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Toronto.
After a successful 10 year run with Wheels, the Porters saw a declining interest and profitability in the roller-skating business.
“It was déjà vu all over again,” recalls Tom.
They looked for an alternative function for the building that would be compatible and complementary to the fitness club.
As described by Tim Fairhurst in his article in the May 2007 issue of Biz X magazine: “A decision was made in December of 2005 to proceed with the construction of the Jackson Park Health Centre. The unique idea of combining the existing squash courts and fitness club with commercial medical offices and services provides clients with the convenience of a one stop shop for health and wellness.”
The Jackson Park Health Centre is now home to the Windsor Family Health Team (WindsorFHT.ca) at Unit #245 and a number of physicians. It also includes the Jackson Park Pharmacy, iAid Home Health Care, Windsor Optometric Centre, Windsor Vascular Care, NetKnight Technologies, HearCanada and Jackson Park Imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, PFT).
The Rosati Group (RosatiGroup.com) was chosen as the design/build contractor for this first of its kind facility. How did the project turn out?
In Tom’s words: “I could not have chosen a better contractor to construct the Jackson Park Health Centre. The Rosati Group fully understood my desire to blend a fitness club with a medical centre in a signature building. They helped me in
careful negotiations and planning with doctors and other health professionals and completed the construction of ‘turnkey’ medical offices on time and within budget as I secured tenants. We receive daily compliments on the beauty of the facility and the functionality of the space.”
After 30 years at 2475 McDougall Street, the couple are hoping to retire from club ownership responsibilities by finding a new buyer who shares their love of squash and fitness. Parties interested in ownership of the club can stop by their location and ask for Tom and/or Marcy. They are usually on site, like they have always been for the past 30 years.
On a personal note: I’ve had memberships at various health facilities in Windsor over the past 50 years, but none felt like “home” to me.
In October 2022 I joined Windsor Squash & Fitness Club and finally found my home.
I consider it the “Cheers” of fitness facilities — “where everybody knows your name.”
The Porters have established a warm, welcoming, professional and supportive staff.
An Open House for past, present and future clients takes place Saturday, May 27, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free use of club facilities and to celebrate 30 years of ownership. Come on out and meet the Porters and their team personally!

Dufour . . . Working To Improve Access To Oral Health Care
Windsor Dental Hygienist offers oral hygiene services at a storefront clinic in Riverside, while also taking her business on the road to service clients on-the-go through her mobile oral health practice.
Dufour is the Owner of Dufour Dental Hygiene (DufourDentalHygiene.ca), which opened in 2018 and is located at 7775 Wyandotte Street East. Her mobile business is called GoSmile (GoSmile.ca).
“I am an independent Registered Dental Hygienist, meaning I work independently of a Dentist in a drill-free environment,” she explains. “Dental hygiene care is crucial in the prevention of infectious oral diseases including periodontitis, dental decay and oral infections.”
Dental hygienists work in a collaborative approach with their clients to achieve and maintain optimal oral health, Dufour notes.
“I also provide mobile services for residents of long-term care facilities and elderly homebound clients experiencing barriers to accessing the vital oral healthcare services they need,” she states.
Dufour Dental Hygiene is a full service independent dental hygiene clinic, providing dental hygiene assessments, cleanings, various therapies for oral disease prevention and symptom management, as well as individualized oral hygiene instruction and product recommendations. The company also facilitates referrals to dentists and various other healthcare providers.
She points out that most people see a Dental Hygienist on a regular basis, but many don’t realize that you have the right to choose your hygienist, just the same as you may choose your Dentist or Family Doctor.
Through her businesses, Dufour and her team aim to provide clients with a relaxed experience in a comfortable environment, free from judgement and the drill. They also provide a discount to seniors in order to make oral care more accessible.
“Upon retirement, many of us lose our employer-provided health benefits, causing us to reduce the frequency of our care or to just stop seeking oral health services at all,” she mentions. “Those most likely to report poorer oral health and barriers include older adults, and that is why we created this option — so that our valued seniors have an affordable option that they deserve.”
According to Dufour an individual’s oral health impacts their overall health, wellbeing and quality of life.
“There is mounting evidence to support what we call the oral-systemic link, meaning the bidirectional relationship that exists between the mouth and the rest of the body,” she describes. “Within the oral environment, there are a plethora of microbes that comprise what we call the oral microbiome.
The composition of this biome is important and has a direct impact on many body systems.”
In other words, Dufour states you shouldn’t just practice good oral health to keep your mouth in tip-top shape, you should also brush and floss daily and see your oral healthcare provider regularly for the health of your heart, your brain and your total body.
Along with owning and operating her two businesses, she is a Clinical Instructor for the Dental Hygiene program at St. Clair College
Proud to be a woman in business, she loves everything about being an entrepreneur and a business owner.
“Every day I am so grateful that I have a very supportive partner,” Dufour adds. “Raising a family is a team effort and my husband really does his share when it comes to our four children.”
She believes it’s very important to prioritize a good work-life balance: “Despite a hectic and busy schedule and working full-time professional lives, my husband and I both agree that parenting our kids is priority number one and we balance it by doing it together.”
Her advice to other entrepreneurs is to always remember that family is the most important thing in the world, no matter what else you have going on.
“I would like to say that I never get frustrated or overwhelmed with all the demands that can build up, but that wouldn’t be the truth,” Dufour admits. “I think the best we can do is learn to accept the way we feel about the things we struggle with and not allow those feelings to overtake us. The most valuable thing that any of us have is time and it can be so easily wasted if we aren’t careful to live in the moments we have been given.”

While the event took place on April Fool’s Day, the turnout was no joke.
Hundreds braved April showers to meet celebrities and browse a wide selection of comics and collectables from local businesses, throughout multiple levels, at the event.
Visitors also saw many incredible Cosplayers who looked like they leapt straight off the screen and into real life!
Biz X was there to take it all in, and also talk with some of the celebrities in attendance.
Canadian Actor Chad Rook spoke to us and mentioned, as a new dad, that being a father was his favourite role!
He shared that he had a hard time landing the role of the Weather Wizard on the CW’s The Flash TV show in 2014, as the casting

team really wanted a known American actor for the role.
However, his persistence and talent eventually wore them down, and he made history as the first villain on the new series that is STILL running to this day!
He has recently starred in the movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
And for the record, his favourite fandom is Star Wars!
Which brings us to Star Wars . . . actress Leilani Shiu shared a great story of her first day on set.
According to Shiu, she was asked to audition for a role for little people on an unnamed project.
Upon her being cast and on set for her first day, she was dressed in grey robes and given no indication what the project was.
Once allowed on set, she saw a little
creature in a cradle, and thought “that looks a little bit like Yoda.”
As they say, the rest is history, as it was in fact Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) and she was on the set of the Mandalorian!
The whole convention was amazing and we look forward to attending next year’s event on April 6, 2024!
1. Rose City Comic Convention organizers Michael Michalski, Kevin Simone and Tony Gray were thrilled with the turnout, which also raised $1,500 for the Windsor Essex Humane Society. Visit: RoseCityComicConvention.com to see the full list of all the featured attractions and guests.
2. Biz X photojournalist Jason Kerluck had a chance to meet and chat with actress Leilani Shiu. She is making history as the first Jawa in Star Wars to be credited in a speaking role and given a named character — that of Teeka. Shiu has starred in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and this was her first Canadian appearance.
3. Biz X magazine was proud to sponsor local filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth and

actress Sarah Booth. Both have been very busy as Gavin just shot Sydney vs. Sean in LA, which he calls an “unromantic drama”. Sarah is working alongside screen legend Alfred Molina on Amazon Prime’s, Three Pines. Such a talented couple!
4. Paper Heroes Comic Book Lounge & Collectibles of Windsor — represented by Owner Scott St. Amour, Jack St. Amour and David McDowall — was one of many vendors on site. The business is the 2015 Biz X Award winner for The Model For Success Hobby Shop.
5. Rogues Gallery Comics was excited to take part in their first Rose City Comic Convention with Shawn Labonte, Shawn Cousineau, and Gene Myers manning their huge booth.
6. Chad Rook was also in Windsor for his first time. The actor got his start on TV’s The Flash and most recently has been fighting zombies in the latest Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, movie.
7. Local Cosplay artist RayGrey was stunning as Fran from the Final Fantasy series of video games. She is an artist of many different looks!
8. Katrina Rutter and Julian Pawlaczyk, the owners of Beatnik Art Supplies, were in the Cosplay area of the event, helping others find their inner creativity. The business recently celebrated its fifth anniversary in April.
9. Local members of the 501st Legion Canadian Garrison — Anne Gokey, Jason Clinansmith and Crain Clinansmith — of Star Wars themed Cosplayers, were decked out in their screen accurate costumes. The trio is pictured with Allan Stephenson (far right), also of the legion dressed as George Lucas (the creator of Star Wars).
It is interesting to note that the costume Leilani Shiu was wearing at the event was made for her by the 501st Legion. Aside from looking intimidating, the group attends all kinds of charitable events in the area while they celebrate their love for Star Wars.
10. More members of the 501st were in the Cosplay area, this time with Vicki Clinansmith and George Marcarian as members of the evil intergalactic empire.

The Otley Butterfly, A Wordless Graphic Novel On WWII FROM THE BOOKSHELF
Localauthor Elizabeth J.M. Walker has paired up with Australian artist Nicholas Beckett to create a wordless graphic novel, The Otley Butterfly, depicting the story of her grandparents during World War II.
After growing up hearing stories about her British grandparents from her father, Walker wanted to capture their story for family and future generations, and to make the story available to other readers.
Her grandfather, Cyril, was a medic in the British Army during the war. Her grandmother, Elsie, was a nurse in England, where she worked at the hospital in Otley, a small town in West Yorkshire.
During Elsie’s time as a nurse, she took care of German POWs, some of whom she remained friends with after the war. The German soldiers gave Elsie the nickname ‘Butterfly’ during their stay in Otley.
Walker hopes to show that even in times of darkness, hope and friendship can still be found.
However, writing out the story as regular prose never felt quite right to Walker.
After trying out different mediums — including at one point a dance theatre production — she decided a wordless graphic novel would be an ideal format.
Walker wrote a script outlining what she wanted to include and teamed up with Beckett to bring the graphic novel to life with his unique artwork.
Beckett chose to use biro for all the illustrations in the book to help create the mood of the time, and because he was inspired by English artist Henry Moore who used biro to illustrate people in the London underground, when it was being used as bomb shelter during WWII.
Walker and Beckett had worked together previously, on the book, The Boy Who Owned the Forest, a collection of short stories by Walker with illustrations also by Beckett.
They originally met through their shared interest in zines, and Beckett has done illustrations for previous zines published by Walker, including her litzine 398.
Beckett (view his portfolio on the website: SaintBeckett.net) also publishes his own art zines.
The Otley Butterfly and other books (She Dreamed of Dragons, Slip Jig Summer and Cindy’s Satin Slipper) by Walker can be purchased online through Amazon and can be found locally at Juniper Books in Windsor (1990 Ottawa Street).
You can find out more about her books by visiting: ElizabethJMwalker.ca and you can also sign up for her newsletter to be kept up to date on future projects.

Around Town . . . Growing The Windsor Brand
By Andrea Grimes
With the signing of the Armistice, WWII drew to a close and many families across Windsor were just beside themselves in anticipation of their dear ones . . . coming home!
Like many cities across Canada, Windsor also prepared for the return of some of our Veterans with the provision of resources such as housing and employment supports, vocational rehabilitation programs and counselling services to help Veterans transition into civilian life.
As a result of post war recovery, a wave of optimism spread throughout Windsor and in no time at all (or so it seemed), businesses grew their “Windsor brand” — hair salons, jewellers, formal wear shops, home furnishings, hardware stores, drive-in theatres, car dealerships, travel agencies, real estate offices, pharmacies, and hobby shops.
As it happened, did you meet the “one” at the Coral Gables Ballroom where he proposed to you under the mirror ball? Perhaps your engagement ring was purchased at Birks Jewellers, and you celebrated this announcement with the “girls” over tea at Lyttles Bakery. Possibly, your trousseau was purchased at the Bartlet, McDonald and Gow department store and your wedding reception was held in the ballroom of the Masonic Temple
From time to time, table reservations were definitely hard to come by at Mario’s of Windsor, the Elmwood Casino, and the Rendezvous Tavern, as well as the Edgewater Thomas Inn and the Metropole Supper Club. The Belle Vue and the
Commodore, the Dominion Tavern (aka the DH) and the Radio Tavern were known for elbow-to-elbow capacity crowds almost every Saturday night!
Generations of families kept the Chicken Court Restaurant and the Tunnel Bar-B-Q their “let’s go out for dinner” priorities.
Over at Mike Drakich’s Top Hat Supper Club, women arrived fashionably dressed in their best “after-five” ensemble and the gents were required to arrive in a dinner jacket and tie or be turned away. More times than not, the “house” had these on-hand for the fellas . . . just in case!
The one recognized standard of “doing business” is the fundamental principle to pay attention to what each customer expects and to deliver that trend consistently.
Canada Salvage Co. is one business that has built upon this principle.
Abraham and Helen Katz established Canada Salvage Co. in 1939. The 1940 edition of Vernon’s City Directory lists the store at 65 Pitt Street East, and according to the 1968 edition of the Might City Directory, the store relocated to 20 Chatham Street East.
On Helen’s death, Richard Blondin took ownership of the store in 1973, and relocated to 1262 Ottawa Street in 1977. On his passing, Elphedge Chapieski purchased the store in 1985.
“When the Chapieski family put the store on the market, purchasing the business in 2022 was the total package for me,” says Janette Calandra, Owner of Canada Salvage Hardware and General Store, now at 1246 Ottawa Street in Windsor.
As a community-based investor, (with a background in real estate), She is driven to build upon the culture of personalized service.
“Providing this one-on-one ‘brand’ commitment to our customers is realized through pride in ownership,” says Calandra. “For anyone looking to invest in an existing business — choose a business they have a similar interest in and make sure that the business has strong roots in the community. The business should be entrenched in the community for a long time and that the business brings value to the area.”
To this day, Canada Salvage (CanadaSalvageHardware.com) continues this tradition with a recognized presence that grows our community — a Windsor brand! As a civilian Veterans Advocate, Andrea Grimes was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Governor General’s Medal, for her volunteer service to Veterans and a number of non-profit organizations supporting Windsor’s military families’ network.

Put Your Best Face Forward (And Body Too!) At County Laser House
By Dave Halliday
Occasionally, someone has a vision — a clear and apparent indication of what path they should take.
For one group of local, fledging, female entrepreneurs, the vision was laser focused!
Gisele Lessard, Lisa Halliday and Jenifer Lajoie envisioned a relaxed, professional, home-based business that provided people a quality experience at an affordable price.
County Laser House — located just a short drive from anywhere in Essex County at 1140 Lakeshore Road 105 in Lakeshore, Ontario — may just be your next preferred destination for professional laser treatments.
The driving force behind the desire to establish this family-based laser clinic in March 2023 is Lessard, Head Technician for the business, who is also Lajoie’s and Halliday’s mother.
Building on her medical background in nursing, Lessard sees the business as a natural progression towards providing clinical laser procedures to assist people in feeling good about themselves.
With three certified technicians through SharpLight Technologies (considered the gold standard in the industry and boasting Health Canada approval), County Laser
House is eager to provide effective, pain-free treatments that are very effective.
They utilize state-of-the-art laser machines that render painful, gel-based treatments a thing of the past!
“SharpLight is the leading innovator of advanced, non-invasive skin care treatments allowing them to cater to clientele of all skin types, hair colour and density,” Lessard describes. “The services we offer include Laser Hair Removal, Acne Treatments, Skin Rejuvenation, and Micro-Channelling by Procell Therapies.”
Expanding on this, Lajoie adds: “For Laser Hair Removal we provide precise treatments that achieve effective permanent results, and we offer treatments on most parts of the body for men and women, regardless of skin or hair type.”
When it comes to Acne Treatments, Halliday explains: “We offer a drug free alternative for treatment of chronic acne. We can effectively treat mild and moderate inflammatory acne utilizing blue light absorption to produce free radicals in the sebaceous glands, which destroy bacteria after which yellow light is employed to coagulate the feeding blood vessels to promote healing.”
In honour of Mother’s Day, we introduce you to a new local business run by a terrific trio, consisting of a mother and her two daughters. County Laser House co-owners and Laser Technicians Gisele Lessard (right) and daughters Jenifer Lajoie (left) and Lisa Halliday — offer Laser Hair Removal and Skin Rejuvenation services. Photo by Rod Denis.
Halliday wraps up her description of this type of treatment by stating: “A final application of infrared light is applied to dry the lesions typically resulting in a 65 to 80% reduction in papules and pustules for the client.”
Another avenue of treatment involves skin rejuvenation.
“SharpLight’s skin facial treatments are suitable for the face, neck, chest, and hands for all skin types and age groups,” indicates Lessard. “The treatments improve the appearance of several common issues such as sunspots, fine lines, enlarged pores, elastosis, mottled pigmentation, dyschromia, rosacea, broken capillaries, spider veins, scars, and even stretch marks.”
Lessard concludes: “These treatments effectively and efficiently tighten skin and reduce the signs of aging in usually one short session per month for up to six months.”
As if everything mentioned isn’t amazing enough, Halliday shares that Microchanneling by Procell — one of the most in demand, non-invasive procedures to stimulate your own body’s natural ability to generate collagen, elastin, and other building blocks of healthy skin — is also offered.”
Building on that Lajoie comments: “Microchannelling treatments can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, stretch marks, and rosacea, with results potentially lasting two to 10 years.”
According to Lessard the Procell Microchanneling delivery plus serum has growth factors and stem cytokines, which is highly effective, less painful, and faster healing than traditional microneedling.
So now that you have been informed about all their services — this story perfectly timed for Mother’s Day in May — can be brought to the perfect ending with the following quote . . .
“Working with my daughters on this is a dream come true and being able to assist our clientele in looking and feeling great is the ultimate goal!” Lessard expresses.
