THE SECOND YEAR OF TIPICO CAREERS Last year, the Malta-based German company Tipico launched a new employment opportunities website called www.tipico-careers.com through its subsidiary Tipico Careers. First had a chat with Tipico Careers about the website’s development and how it is aimed at today’s dynamic jobseeker. With its headquarters at the Portomaso Business Tower in St Julian’s, Tipico offers a wide range of pre-live and live sports betting products delivered through cutting-edge mobile and online channels as well as through a top-class portfolio of approximately 1,000 retail outlets, predominantly in Germany. One of the key drivers behind Tipico’s growth is that it is an organisation that attracts young people with great tech skills, business understanding and an international outlook. This is why Malta was chosen as the hub for European operations because it offers a business-friendly environment with access to welleducated staff – both local and international. “Like the company, the Tipico Careers website is young, fun,

innovative, intelligent and engaging. It reflects our work, which is all about acquiring top talent and investing in our workforce.” The Tipico Careers site introduces newcomers to the company with a very innovative motion graphic animation called: ‘What’s in it for you at Tipico’ showing the company’s history, its position within the German market, its premium partner and the benefits one would enjoy when joining the organisation. Another video available on www.tipico-careers.com shows Tipico’s high-end offices based in the iconic Portomaso business tower, with an amazing view of the Mediterranean.

them with initiatives through a multitude of instant and effective social media tools available on people-preferred, often handheld devices. These include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Skype, Google+, Whatsapp, Xing and many others platforms.” “At Tipico we very much believe that such tools are the way forward in terms of communication and we feel that they will take over the previous and current generation of online communication tools as we know them today. We enjoy using social media platforms to keep people updated with what the brand has to offer by engaging users via pictures, videos and related approaches.”

Whenever possible, the company employs local talent, but some jobs are snapped up by people who make Malta their new home. And it is for these that the website also features an introductory video to Malta’s gems, gorgeous locations, the island’s culture, beaches and nightlife in the ‘Why Malta?’ section. “These days it’s all about attracting people and engaging

From the CEO... Hello and a warm welcome on board! Thank you for choosing Air Malta. July is the hottest month on the Maltese Islands with an average temperature of 27°C (80°F). During this month we have an average of 14 hours of sunshine, meaning you have got ample day-time to explore the island’s great attractions. Not only. During this month Malta is a beehive of activities in the evenings. This month’s attractions include various village ‘Festas’, the Infiorita in Għarb, Gozo, the Joseph Calleja Annual concert, various festivals amongst which the Malta International and the Sliema Arts festivals, the Marsovin Summer Wine festival, the Farsons Beer festival and the Malta Jazz festival, amongst others. This month, on the 4th July, we will start operating to our new destination, Palermo. This season we have added a twice weekly frequency to the Sicilian capital, Palermo, with fares starting from as low as €54 one-way including taxes and charges. Our Palermo flights will operate in addition to our 15 weekly flights between Malta and Catania and reinforce the airline’s leading position between Italy and Malta. This summer Air Malta’s schedule offers short trip opportunities on Catania, Rome, London and Brussels. So why not visit another country on a day-trip and make the best out of your holiday time? Wherever you are flying with us I hope you have a great flight! Philip Micallef, CEO Air Malta

From the Editor… Ah summer is finally here, and I must admit that everything suddenly seems better for no apparent reason. Days are longer, warmer, and significantly brighter in all ways possible, and there’s a fresh vibe in the air that makes most of us smile for no apparent reason. And just as Malta’s temperatures start to spike, our calendar of events is exploding with a variety of activities waiting to be explored. From wine and jazz festivals, all the way to international DJs, live acts and seasonal festivals, Malta is gearing up to flaunt its colours in full glory, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. I normally utilise this space to welcome new travellers to our idyllic archipelago, thank them for using Air Malta and wish them safe travels, however this time I’d like to turn my attention to the hundreds of locals flying back and forth for business or leisure purposes. Perhaps we’re friends, maybe we’ve just crossed paths a couple of times, or we know each other by sight – one thing’s for certain, the next time you see me you’ll probably greet me by saying “I saw you on the inflight magazine!”, well guess what; in this issue I’ve seen you too. Wishing you safe travels – see you next month!

DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF GOZO

WORDS BY Ministry of Gozo

dive into beauty Blue Hole Known to many as the most distinctive landmark on the Western coastline, the true beauty of the Azure Window reveals itself to scuba divers below the surface. Its entrance forms the 'Blue Hole', which ranks among the most famous dive sites in the Mediterranean. The sunlit upper walls are rutted and covered by flat sponges and even some yellow stony cup corals (Astroides calycularis). A spacious cavern on the back of the Blue Hole is a place worth discovering towards the end of your dive. Past the impressive arch, which opens towards the sea at about eight metres depth, divers have a choice of spectacular attractions. Dwejra, where this dive site is located, is itself a place of inspiring natural beauty, to be enjoyed by all.

02

Indeed, there are few things more aesthetically ravishing and visually stunning than the delicate, creatively-designed and intricately-wrought hand made Maltese filigree products. Look out for pendants, necklaces, brooches, earrings, bracelets and rings, designed and handmade by local silversmiths and jewellers, whose art and craft beggar description. Thankfully, the tradition is still vibrant, as Gozitan filigree jewellery is very much in demand among both local consumers and visitors, keen on buying a special gift or a self-gratifying treat, that is redolent with Gozitan culture and traditions. Filigree jewellery is still made in the traditional way. However, to give a contemporary twist to an ancient craft, new, modern and innovative methods have been fused with age-old practices to produce a wide array of original, genuine products, that appeal to a wider market. Indeed the consummate skills evident in the enormous variety of patterns, materials and motifs used by artists in producing craft jewellery, reflect the enduring ingenuity and devotion to cultural roots, of craftsmen and artists who make creativity their way of life.

BEACHES

Summer time and the living is easy... WORDS BY Ricky Vella

01

02

01. Fomm ir-Riħ Bay/Leslie Vella 02. Imġiebaħ Bay

... so the song goes and, as usual, most of us, at this time of year, can’t wait for schools to break up (or to set off on our vacation) and prepare for our wonderful, lazy, hazy days at the beach – but some of us, on the other hand, have reservations and would much prefer a quiet beach somewhere, where we can pack up our needs for the day and discover a beach that isn’t teeming with crowds all trying to find a little space where they can relax and sunbathe. Although Malta and Gozo are small, what they lack in size they make up for in little secluded beaches – not many I must admit, but they are there – most of them can only be reached by boat, a couple of them by climbing down unmade roads – but it’s well worth the effort...so whether you have friends who own boats, no matter the size, or you fancy hiring one for the day, these little secluded places are there for anyone who desperately wants a

taste of paradise, even for a day... so let’s start with Malta and...

ImĠiebaĦ Bay (Selmun) An out-of-the-way beach where it is guaranteed you won't find yourselves facing swarms of people – the reason being, it’s difficult to reach, not only is it confusing to get there but actually climbing down the rocky path in the cliff, does put a lot of people off. A word of advice, check weather forecasts first and foremost – as the calmness of the sea is a must to fully appreciate the beauty of this bay. A haven, ideal for snorkelling, or, if one prefers, a quiet swim.

Fomm ir-RiĦ Bay (mouth of the wind) This beautiful, unspoilt bay can easily be reached by boat... one can eventually get there by foot, but the only way is down a

very rough trail which is literally cut into the rock face – not ideal, especially if you have children in tow. Now the advantages for this ‘difficult to reach spot’ are the guarantee of total peace and quiet. Not only are the surrounding, azure waters crystal clear, but the contrast of the nearby cliffs and green valleys, boast a beautiful backdrop for this bay. For the more adventurous, it’s good to note that this spot is a firm favourite for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. It’s certainly a place worth thinking about and visiting – a place where one can find sanity again after the worries and stress that are left behind. So make the effort and plan your journey to this out-of-the-way spot and reap the benefits of spending a day there, soaking up the sun , while the only sound is the water caressing the sand as it gently reaches the shore. So let’s move on to ...

famous crystal clear, blue sea. History tells us that a commander of a squadron found a plant growing profusely there, and it was thought it contained medicinal properties and cured certain illnesses such as bleeding and dysentery, amongst others. 01. Comino 02. St Peter's Pool

St Peter’s Pool A couple of hours away from the Grand Harbour is a gorgeous bay which is sheltered and, more importantly protected, from any winds that are quite frequent to our islands. This is another secluded place that is complicated to get to – so again if you can get hold of a boat or have your own, then no problem! It is a natural pool surrounded by blue, crystal clear Mediterranean sea – people are often gobsmacked at the surreal turquoise and light green colour of the waters, and you find yourself immediately persuaded to snorkel or dive at this particular place. I have visited this secluded spot a couple of times and loved the flat rocks there, which are ideal for sunbathing, but one will also discover elevated rocks offering shade when the sun gets a bit too much. There are high rocks for the

more daring divers and, for the cautious, ladders are readily available. The up side to visiting this natural pool is that it is remote so to speak and, due to the rough roads that take you there, it is obviously never crowded and one will always find that special, quiet spot where you can completely relax for the day. There are no amenities there though, so do pack food and drink that you may need for the day – not forgetting sun block - and enjoy the peace and quiet that only a remote spot like this can offer. Now, let's quickly transfer ourselves to Gozo... and go to...

Fungus Rock (known as the General’s Rock) At the north part of Gozo (Malta’s little sister island) there stands the azure window – one of Gozo’s main attractions – and, just to the left, you will find Fungus Rock – a beautiful spot, definitely secluded and entirely surrounded by our

This is an amazing site for underwater sports as one will discover beautiful vertical walls absolutely covered with starfish, tube worms and sea urchins. So, while the adventurous family member is discovering the sea–life, the rest can take in the breathtaking scenery – an ideal time to use that camera and take some memorable shots for back home. Whist there, the Azure Window is certainly a site to take in, no photos can ever depict the beauty of this natural archway. Still in Gozo..

San Blas Bay Another ideal spot which isn’t easy to reach, unless of course, as mentioned above, you have a boat, one can attempt to go by foot but it’s good to be warned that one has to climb a very steep hill to get there, and with Malta’s hot temperatures I can assure you it is not easy. Again this beach does not get overcrowded due to its difficult access. They call this Ramla Bay’s little sister owing to its reddish-brown sand. Small

in size and beautifully tranquil, this little piece of heaven offers the perfect waters for snorkelling – but on the other hand if you’re feeling lazy, the tempting sand is the ideal place to lie down and top up that suntan. It's perfect for families – where young ones can sharpen their imagination with their building techniques in the sand. Now, let's venture to the smallest island of our three Mediterranean gems.

our little island, Comino This article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Comino – this tiny, beautiful island, only measures 3.5 km and got its name from the cumin seed which was once found in abundance here. The island enjoys the services of one hotel – offering anyone who wishes to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and where one can enjoy calmness, peace and a long-awaited rest. There is no need to venture out of the hotel’s grounds, unless you suddenly feel a

surge of energy – otherwise stay put and enjoy the private beach readily available to all guests. Boats to Comino are very frequent and can be booked from Cirkewwa – where the Gozo ferry also departs. A definite ‘must’ is a visit to the Blue Lagoon – this can be found just between the island of Comino and the little tiny islet of Kemunett. Its waters are famous, to say the least – if one had to see the colour of the surrounding sea on a postcard, one would definitely think the iridescent waters were ‘touched up’, but as you get closer and you realise they’re for real. Ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving – and children can safely swim or play in the warm, clear, shallow waters. As mentioned above, a well-packed cooler is essential as most of these secluded spots do not have any amenities – so a well-planned day to a remote spot such as mentioned here would definitely be a bonus for anyone visiting our islands.

Preparing your Home for Summer

T

he Maltese islands are wellknown for their hot and sunny weather – especially during the summer months. The time is here to get our swimsuits and beach towels out, stock up on sunscreen and aloe vera gel, and prepare our summer music playlists...but it’s also time to freshen up our homes to bring the summer vibe inside!

Liven it up! Plants and flowers bring a special kind of freshness to a home that is quite unique. You don’t need green fingers to pull this off. Whether you choose to buy a potted plant to maintain, or to buy some fresh bouquets from your local florist, this is going to bring so much life to your home that you will automatically feel uplifted! There are plenty of ways to incorporate flowers into your home, such as weaving them into a welcome wreath for your front door, or simply popping them into vases or mason jars around the house. The easiest low maintenance green additions are succulents, which fit our environment to a T.

Roll up the Rugs Fluffy thick carpets or rugs make a room look and feel warmer. Be sure to clean them well to avoid dust mites and smells, moth-proof them, then roll them up and store them in a cool, dry place to prevent them from moulding. Summer flooring alternatives --- If you still prefer to have something under your feet, you could try some lighter coloured rugs, or thin or woven mats instead.

Brighten Your Rooms Stow away your wintery sheets and curtains and replace them with brighter or lighter coloured ones, made from thinner materials. Feel free to experiment with different prints and patterns too, and see what works well with the rest of the room. If you'd like to go the extra mile, you could also change things such as table mats, sofa cushions, and bathroom towels, to add that extra touch of brightness to every room. Try to use neutral colours, subtle patterns and natural fibers to create a cool, calming effect. Summer is also the perfect time to do house projects like repainting walls

or sanding and polishing furniture. Whether you want to change colours or just refresh what you’ve already got, head down to the paint store, get your DIY pants on, and get brushing. Fresh paint jobs topped up with bright, new and fresh coloured fabrics, have the power to entirely revive a house, bringing a new energy to you and your home.

Make it Shine Nothing feels better than having a spanking clean home that looks, feels and smells fresh! Give everything a good dusting and polishing, get rid of extra clutter, and let in some fresh air. You’ll soon feel revived and ready to take on the world! If you’d like to have your home freshened up before your arrival in Malta, LOFT can help! Whether you’re looking for a quick clean-up, a re-stock of essentials, or even home restyling with accessories, we can ensure that your home will be ready before you walk through the door. For more ideas on redecorating, pop in to LOFT to view our gorgeous collections that will brighten up your home this summer.

Written in the Rock

WORDS BY Helen Raine

PHOTOS BY Aaron Briffa

Malta has yielded some of the most fascinating fossils in Europe, dating back to an era when hippos and elephants were as small as ponies, and dormice were as large as guinea pigs. John J Borg, senior curator of the Natural History Department at Heritage Malta takes us back to the time when history was literally written in the rock and explains how those strange bones came to be found.

How did you become interested in fossils? During a school visit in 1975 to the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Mdina, the guide showed us a collection of Maltese fossils including large-sized shark`s teeth. I was fascinated that such remains could be found in Maltese rocks. I started looking for fossils, finding my first fossil sea-shells and sea-urchins in the soft Globigerina Limestone at Manoel Island.

Why is Malta so rich in fossils? The Maltese Islands were formed in a warm, shallow sea between two great land masses. All the tertiary fossils belong to marine organisms. In fact, our very rocks are composed of fossilised specimens. There are five layers of rock on the islands. Lower Coralline Limestone is on the bottom, made of marine algae and millions

of small, fossilised animals. Take a walk along the coast or in the countryside and you’ll find these fossils, mostly sea urchins, oysters, snails and fish. The second rock formation is what we use for building Globigerina Limestone. ‘Globigerina’ is a minute snail and this rock formation is made up of calcium from the snail’s shell. Next, there is sometimes a layer of Blue Clay. A Green Sand layer is also found, especially in Gozo; in Malta, you can see it along Dingli Cliffs. The very top layer, Upper Coralline Limestone, formed when Africa moved north and eventually collided with Europe. This caused major earthquakes, forming mountain ranges and deep valleys. Around five-to-seven million years ago the top layer, including the Maltese Islands, broke the surface of the Mediterranean. This layer is missing from the south side of Malta due to centuries upon centuries of erosion.

GEOLOGY

Tell us about ‘insular dwarfism’ and Għar Dalam.

Where can you go to see fossils in a museum?

During the last Ice Age, you could have walked from Sicily to Malta. The sea-level rose and fell several times, alternately creating land-bridges and islands before Malta was cut off for good. Many animals trapped on the islands went extinct, but some evolved to cope with the new conditions. For example, the elephants and hippopotami stranded here adapted to the limited land mass and the absence of predators by shrinking in size. On the other hand, small animals such as rodents, birds and reptiles grew in size to protect their territories and attract females. These miniature hippos and monster mice were discovered in Għar Dalam.

Many fossils were unearthed during the British era, so the majority of finds were deposited in British museums. But you can still see many fascinating bones in the wonderful Victoriastyle museum at the cave. My favorites are the elephant remains, in particular the molars of the tiny elephas falconeri, the size of a small pony.

Għar Dalam (meaning Cave of Darkness) was mentioned in an early treatise on the Maltese islands in 1647, but it was only in 1865 that Genoese naturalist Arturo Issel excavated a shallow ditch and found human remains as well as hippo bones and the importance of the site was recognised. Since then, naturalists have found countless bones of dwarf elephants, miniature hippos, deer, wolves, foxes, bats, rodents and birds. The pleistocene hippos went extinct around 10,000 years ago, while species like the deer were still around 4,000 years ago. Għar Dalam is the ‘type locality’ for Malta’s earliest archaeological phase (that means it gives its name to the archaeological period). That’s because of the discoveries of bones and pottery dating back up to 7,400 years - the pottery has geometric designs similar to pieces found in Sicily from the same period, suggesting early settlers came from there.

The National Museum of Natural History in Mdina also houses a brilliant display highlighting all the major finds from sea urchins to extinct crocodiles. The marine mammal section here is another favorite; new species are still being identified from the collection and an exhibit is due to be unveiled around Christmas time with previously unseen fossils.

Where are the best sites in Malta to view fossils in situ? Localities tend to host 'typical' species, so one area may be good for sea urchins while another site may produce vast quantities of shark teeth. Here are some of my favourite spots: Delimara – Pockets of Globigerina along the southern shores are good places to look for fossils. Dwejra in Gozo – This area is a fantastic open air laboratory to learn about past environments, tertiary fossils, climate change and extinction. The transition zone between the

Lower Coralline Limestone and Globigerina bed are very good for sea urchins. Għar Dalam – An excellent place to see hippo bones in situ; the stratigraphic wall and pillar inside the cave show exactly how each layer was deposited. Remember that it’s illegal to dig fossils out of the rock in Malta and / or to export them without a permit (only issued by the Superintendent for Cultural Heritage to bona-fide researchers).

What was the last major fossil find in Malta? A lot of work is currently underway with several new species discovered that had resided for many years in the museum collections (as well as some private ones) and which have just been rediscovered. New species of whales, crabs and numerous sea urchins have also been described in the last years a major find was the discovery of a large-sized hippopotamus jaw and pelvic bone, which are now on display at Għar Dalam. There are still a few promising sites that can could yield some very exiting results. NMNH also forms part of an international project called MEDIDWARFS, where Pleistocene material (especially elephants and hippos) from Mediterranean islands is being investigated.

THE MALTESE NANNA WORDS BY Steve Hili

M

altese nannas (grandmothers) are a breed apart. Full of wisdom, wit and the ability to show you just how disappointed they are in you by raising an eyebrow. When I think of the typical Maltese granny, I think of a tough, no-nonsense woman with some hair on her chin, rosary beads around her wrist, and lipstick that isn't quite sitting on her lips. There she is, queen of her domain, drinking a cup of tea on her 1970s rexine sofa (with the plastic cover still on it, to, you know, protect it. It is only 40 years old after all.)

Everyone loves their nanna. For millions of reasons. But ask most Maltesers about their favourite memories of their grandmothers and I would bet that some sort of food-based recollection would be near the top of the list. You see, the Maltese nanna's food is... well, what dreams are made of. Now of course, I know that many grandads - nannus, cook too, but when I was growing up, roles in the Maltese household were much more rigid, and when it came to grandparents' houses, the kitchen was almost always the nannas' domain. I am not sure how nannas felt about that. Or nannus for that matter. But when you visit your grandparents as a six-year old you tend not to think about sexual politics. Especially, if as soon as you walk through the door, your nanna starts pinching your cheeks, telling you how much you've grown since she last saw you (which was, invariably, the day before) and then asking you if you were hungry. The answer to that final question is of course of no consequence.

39

NOSTALGIA

Hell hath no fury like a Maltese nanna who has just been told that you won't eat her food

Nannas ask the question but do not care for the answer. In fact, in typical situations, nannas would have left the room before you'd even have had a chance to respond. Shooting off into the kitchen to prepare something or at least "heat something up". Even if you weren't hungry. In fact, even if you had just eaten. And you were full. But it didn't matter. You HAD to eat. And if you didn't she would be upset. And hell hath no fury like a Maltese nanna who has just been told that you won't eat her food. The thing is, when she sat you down and served up, you always found space in your tummy. Even if you were full. Because nanna's food is perfect.

Tastes perfect that is. Let's be honest, presentation wise, it wasn't always the best. But get past the aesthetics and the treat of your life would be waiting. Nannas have that power. It is like they are X-women or something. X-women with the ability to make a soup so thick you could eat it with a fork and knife (aka "kawlata") yet make it taste like heaven. Of course your parents know how to cook too, but if you have got a Maltese nanna, you'll understand that nothing comes close. From basic dishes like laham fuq il-fwar (literally, steamed meat) to monster dishes like timpana (baked macaroni with a pastry pie topping that will leave you comatose with carbs) to special treats a rabbit stew or roast leg of lamb (Strictly for Christmas or Easter only.)

41

NOSTALGIA

Don't expect any complicated dishes, no eggs benedict or baked Alaska from this chef but give her some basic veggies, and some meat or fish, and that is all she needs to make the magic happen. Glorious... If you have got a Maltese nanna, you are the luckiest person in the world. If not, try to borrow one for a day (there really should be a service like that), and, your life will be complete. My nannas have sadly both passed away but I still think about them now and again, in heaven, offering (or more likely force-feeding) their grub to all the angels and saints.

The airline’s timetable has remained unchanged, operating a twice-weekly service departing from Malta every Friday and Saturday, and from Moscow every Saturday and Sunday. The Maltese airline continues to be the only airline offering direct flights between Russia and Malta.

Located northwest of central Moscow, the airport is served by a variety of efficient transport modes. It is just 35 minutes away from the city center by the Aeroexpress train. Sheremetyevo airport is the largest and most modern airport in Russia and one of the top 10 fastest growing airports in Europe. It handles over 31 million passengers and 265,000 aircraft movements every year. Sheremetyevo Airport provides Air Malta with more operational flexibility and fits perfectly with the airline’s strategy to offer customers access to the best central airports with easy onward connections. Sheremetyevo Airport is a hub of Air Malta’s code share partner, Aeroflot, the national airline of Russia. Through this code-sharing, Sheremetyevo will offer Air Malta customers access to over 30 destinations within Russia. Air Malta is committed to the Moscow route and is the only airline offering connectivity between both countries supporting businesses and assisting the development of further tourism opportunities.

P

erry Estate Agent’s letting department continues to lead the high-end residential market in Malta, brokering many of the up-market lease agreements and entrusted with handling the best quality and most prestigious properties on offer. Most recently Perry has been appointed as exclusive agents for “The Adelaide”, a gold-standard development located on Malta’s finest and most privileged seafront addresses – at 230, Tower Road, Sliema. This property offers prospective tenants an inspiring opportunity to lease one of 14 luxury apartments, each one tastefully designed with sophisticated interiors and cutting edge technology. The Adealide promises to lead the market whilst introducing new levels of luxury, convenience and comfort. Perry’s letting department has successfully rented 70 per cent of apartments within a few weeks from launch and The Adelaide is expected to receive its first tenants this month. Perry’s letting department prides itself on having the most approachable and knowledgeable property consultants, backed by over 35 years of experience in the residential and commercial property markets. The company’s real estate services are well sought after by repeat clients due to the company’s personal service, traditional business values and reputation for achieving results. The letting department was set up to complement the already long-established and successful sales department, and to offer prospective clients a full range of real estate services. Perry’s unrivalled market knowledge, particularly in the up-market segment, allows its professionals to arrange everything for prospective landlords, from marketing of their quality property, and sourcing of tenants (many of whom are consistently referred to Perry Ltd. by some of the most reputable and internationally-renowned companies present on the island), through to the drawing up of draft lease agreements, rent collections and rent reviews, thereby giving landlords total peace of mind and a reliable letting income for as long as they are on the letting market.

Today Perry’s letting team is widely recognised as the leader for up-market property and deals with the most discerning of international clients on a daily basis. For prospective tenants seeking a property to let, Perry aims to make the entire letting process as hassle free and straight forward as possible, from searching for a suitable property, to agreeing rental terms and assisting in the move to one’s new home. The department is also always actively seeking new ways of how to improve the customer experience and, in recent years, successfully published its very own guide to renting property in Malta which is updated each year. This 16 page full colour publication has proved to be a huge success and a valuable resource for anyone looking to rent a property in Malta. A complimentary copy is handed to all prospective clients and distributed in many key locations throughout Malta including five-star hotels and at the Malta International Airport. Perry’s letting department has consistently increased its annual year-on-year turnover by an average of 20 per cent each year from 2008 to-date, and the department under the leadership of Robert Spiteri Paris in his role as head of the letting department, continues to go from strength to strength. Whether you are looking to purchase or rent a property, Perry estate agents is dedicated to helping you find your ideal home. With over 35 years’ experience, Perry’s team will ensure that they find the right home for you, whatever your property requirements may be. Perry has also recently announced the opening of a new dedicated lettings office offering state-ofthe-art premises and facilities to further improve the customer experience. This new lettings department, located at 198, Tower Road, Sliema, will be inter-connected with the existing head office located at 197, Tower Road, Sliema. All prospective and existing clients are invited to visit. Perry Estate Agents can be contacted on 21 310 800/0088 or via e-mail perry@perry.com.mt for both sales or letting enquiries.

RETIREMENT

Powering Down in Malta M WORDS BY Helen Raine

oving somewhere sunny when you retire has become the equivalent of a backpacking gap year for 18 year olds – a rite of passage. With Malta regularly touted as one of the best options for retirees with itchy feet, we take a look why it is so popular, how you can go about making Malta your home, and what the potential pitfalls might be.

Sunshine-y Day Yes, the sun shines on our Mediterranean isle for more than 3,100 hours a year and the climate is ranked in the top three worldwide for the over 60s by International Living Magazine. When you’re sat in wet Wolverhampton or damp Dusseldorf, those statistics are enough to have you packing your bags immediately. But before you book the moving van, there are some additional considerations. The average temperature of 19°C hides some serious highs and lows – the thermometer regularly tops 40°C in July and August. For older people, especially those unused to the heat, that can be dangerous. And in the winter, while temperatures don’t get particularly low compared to more northerly climes (the mean lowest temperature in January and February is around 5°C but it usually hovers around 13°C or so during the day), the high levels of humidity and wind make it feel much colder. In addition, the lack of central heating in most homes can accentuate the feeling of being cold. Many retirees solve the summer problem by returning to their home country in the peak of heat, but you’ll need to factor in the costs of this. And make sure you consider those cold winter months when buying or renting a home here – good

insulation will help, while solar panels help keep down the costs of winter heating if you are using an air-conditioner.

Do You Speak English? English is an official language, spoken by 88 per cent of the population. This makes life considerably more straightforward for Anglophones. It also makes it easier to integrate into the local community. Do be aware that, occasionally, government documents and notices don’t have an English translation. Also, details will sometimes get lost in translation when locals talk amongst themselves in Maltese and then fill you in in English. There are plenty of opportunities to learn Maltese if you feel inclined.

Proximity to Europe Malta has a fantastic location in Europe, which makes up for the fact that it’s a small country where you might occasionally get island fever. As long as you can fly, it’s easy to get off, the rock, every now and then – hundreds of destinations are just a short plane ride away. There’s also the ferry to Sicily with access to mainland Europe from there.

Scheming Pensioners The Maltese government has a retirement programme (the MRP) designed to attract nationals of the EU, EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland. There are certain obligations (you need to own or rent property on the islands, receive ‘the whole amount of a pension’ in Malta and spend a certain amount of time in the country) but that gives you ‘special tax status’ under the programme, namely a flat rate of 15 per cent on foreign-sourced income. For full details, visit ird.gov.mt/ regulations/retirement_program.aspx If you’re not from the EU or EEA, it may still be possible to get Maltese residency through the MRP (although you’ll have to jump through additional hoops) or the Global Residence Programme. For more information, visit economy.gov. mt/en/globalresidence

Wise up to Health Malta has a National Health Service. EU pensioners may be able to access this service for free by applying for a ‘portable S1 document’ in their home country and then getting a ‘certificate of entitlement’ in Malta. There are different rules for early retirees. For more

information, visit europa.eu or contact the Department of Health in Malta by email at entitlements.mhec@gov.mt. If you aren’t from the EU, healthcare costs could be an issue – you need to carefully research how much to budget and or what insurance might be available to you.

Cost of Living The EU reports that, 'Annual living costs in Malta are substantially lower than most of the developed European Countries' although they note that costs are rising. Even so, your pension is likely to go further here than in northern European countries, with Malta cheaper than Germany, the UK, and Italy. It also compares favourably to the US. Imported goods tend to be expensive, which can push grocery prices up (many people shop at vegetable wagons, and buy their fish and meat from local markets and mobile vendors) as well as bumping up the cost of big ticket items like furniture, but this is offset by generally lower rent and utility bills. Eating out and entertainment are also good value, as is public transport - pensioners pay just 25c per bus journey with a free Tallinja

card or can get a weekly pass for €2. The Gozo ferry is free for holders of a ‘Karta Anzjan’ and the Sliema Ferry is just 50c.

Housing market House prices increased dramatically in Malta up to around 2007, when the market flat-lined. However, the island did not see the kind of catastrophic price collapses that happened in the USA and elsewhere. According to agents, house prices have risen 10 per cent annually for the last two years, Valletta is considered the latest up and coming location, with apartments starting at around €150,000. The capital city has traditionally been shunned in favour of Sliema and the outlying villages, but the Renzo Piano facelift of the city gate and parliament building has added value. Agents Frank Salt say that they have seen ‘an increase in demand for property for sale and to- let in the city and they put this down to investment made in Valletta in the past years, making the city very attractive as a place to invest and

live. They confirm that they are getting a lot of interest from highly-educated and cultured foreign clients, particularly from France, Italy and those who are mesmerised by the beauty of the city’s architecture and surroundings. It would be wise to rent before you buy, especially since rental is good value-formoney compared to the cost of buying a home (rents range from around €462 for a 45m² apartment in a relatively cheap area, to €1,200 for an 85m² apartment in an expensive area). Take some time to understand the market in Malta; properties can sometimes be difficult to offload if you change your mind (depending on where and what you buy), partly due to the fact that up to one in three homes is currently vacant. Holding off buying will also give you time to find the right location; you might find the pace of life too slow in Gozo, or conversely, hate the bustle of Sliema and prefer to kick back in Mellieħa or Xemxija.

Eating out and entertainment are also good value, as is public transport - pensioners pay just 25c per bus journey

Global Citizens Choose Malta

T

he Malta Individual Investor Programme (MIIP) was launched in March 2014 and has seen an influx of the most financially successful individuals and their families invest in it. The MIIP is viewed as the most prestigious European citizenshipby-investment programme. There is a plethora of reasons that motivate the ultra-wealthy to want to acquire a second citizenship. Often, the primary motivator is the next generation and ensuring that they have the security of a future with options. European citizenship represents this. Maltese citizenship is consistently regarded as amongst the most valuable in the world. It allows visa-free access to 168 countries, including the United States, and, of course, confers all the benefits that go with being a citizen of the European Union.

However, beyond this, individuals and families seeking to obtain alternative citizenship want to know that their new country of citizenship is safe,

economically and politically stable, welcoming to people of different cultures, has a good standard of living, and holds itself in good international standing. Even if their intention is not necessarily to live in the country permanently, families want to feel at home in the place and amongst the people. Malta ticks all of these boxes. It is a country that is often seen to silently punch above its weight. Despite its small size and limited natural resources, it has succeeded in building a stable and growing economy, even in the face of crises in other parts of Europe. International credit rating agencies have consistently maintained Malta’s investment grade credit ratings, whilst at the same time downgrading that of other countries in the same region. To many, it offers an interesting balance between the way of life characteristic of the Mediterranean region, and a manner of conducting business more typically associated with the Anglo-Saxon world. It has a transparent legal system and strong democratic institutions. English

is an official language and the language of choice in business and professional circles. To families from the Gulf and the Arab world, Malta’s other official language – Maltese, a language with strong Arabic roots - adds a surprising and welcoming dimension. Another important consideration is taxation. Malta’s tax system is designed to attract international investors to do business in and from the country, and, as a result, the impact of acquiring Maltese citizenship is often completely neutral. This is an ancillary but understandably key consideration. Since the programme’s inception, Frendo Advisory has helped a number of individuals and families, from backgrounds as diverse as their countries of origin, to successfully apply for citizenship under the programme. We work hand-in-hand with the most reputable immigration firms internationally to ensure that the applicant and his or her family are welllooked after every step of the way.

For further information please contact us on info@frendoadvisory.com The MIIP is a 12-month process and entails investment in two forms: (i) a contribution (of €650,000 for the main applicant, with additional contributions (of between €25,000 and €50,000) required for the spouse and other family members) made to the Government, and (ii) an investment in Malta Government Bonds (of €150,000). In addition to that, the applicant must maintain a residential address in Malta for a period of five years, either one which is rented (at a minimum of €16,000 annually) or owned outright (purchased at a minimum value of €350,000). The applicant goes through a -multi-tiered due diligence process with the intention of ensuring that only persons of good repute are conferred with citizenship.

The best future is one with options Discover the value of EU Citizenship for you and your family The freedom to live, do business and thrive in the EU are just some of the benefits of achieving European Citizenship through Investment. At Frendo Advisory we specialise in helping individuals and families to secure a future filled with security, stability and options. We have acquired a wealth of expertise and experience through the Malta and Cyprus Citizenship Programmes, and as a family firm we are able to understand the needs of our clients while handling the process sensitively and efficiently from start to finish. If you would like to contact us we can be reached on +356 21234000 | info@frendoadvisory.com www.frendoadvisory.com

TIPICO’S STAR OF THE FUTURE Marketing Analyst ANASTASIA MULJAJEW was awarded the gold prize in the ‘Star of the Future’ category at the seventh Women in Gaming Awards presented in London in May. Her Tipico colleagues Claudia Wegner, Director of the Legal & Compliance department, was nominated in the ‘Inspiration of the Year’ category, while Adriana Rocha, Lead Business Analyst, received a nomination for ‘iGaming Leader of the Year’. Bizzilla asked Anastasia for her thoughts on her return to Tipico’s headquarters at the Portomaso Tower. What was the trip to London for the Women in Gaming Awards like? The whole trip was a huge, positive surprise! Travelling with colleagues, who also become friends is always great fun. We had a great day in London, exploring and enjoying the many sights, followed by the ceremony itself. Everyone looked fantastic, wearing their best, most glamorous clothes… beautiful dresses, high heels, smart tuxedoes and so many talented and beautiful women in one place!

The ceremony was held at the extremely luxurious Jumeriah Hotel. The ‘Star of the Future’, which I was nominated for, was one of the last awards called. There were so many fantastic women who were nominated in this category, so when my name was called I was totally shocked! I thought: “Me? Award? Am I dreaming?” I got so emotional on stage, that I just could not express myself! What’s it like working at Tipico, from the female perspective? Funnily enough, shortly after I started working in the Marketing office I became the only women in the department for a while. Luckily it didn’t remain this way for long and the company even hired a female director of Marketing. Now we are five ladies here, and working with them makes me realise how far the department has come. I see how much more we work as a team, communicating, analysing, but also socialising and exchanging ideas through chats and debates. Some of my female colleagues, who are also mothers, bring patience, creativity and great management

skills, which enrich the life of our department considerably. How much of Tipico’s success do you attribute to female participation in its workforce? Well, at least a half! No team can be built without team spirit, communication, analysis, patience, creativity, management, care and a little love for each other. And no company can survive without great teams, which nurture the success of it. How important are awards such as the one you were given, and how have you been inspired after winning? I am not sure their overall importance has completely sunk in just yet. The only thing I can say for sure is that it has been an important part of my personal development. It has been one of those glorious moments when you realise you are on the right path in life. So I have been inspired and now want to reach even higher goals. Let’s begin!

Exploring the islands Despite its diminutive size, the Maltese archipelago is bursting with historic sites, idyllic spots, culture and tradition. The Maltese Islands are like nowhere else. Here’s a handy guide on what to look out for during your stay.

The Three Cities MAlta Birgu, Bormla and Isla are collectively known as the Three Cities. These cities had their names changed by the Knights of Malta and are, today, known as Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea respectively. FASHION

MALTA FASHION O WEEK 2016

ne of the highlights of the Maltese event calendar is always Malta Fashion Week - not just for the fashion obsessed, this event caters not only for the passionate but also for those with a passing interest. The event always takes place in May and, for the last few years, has been held at one or more beautiful heritage locations. The week-long event ends with the Malta Fashion Awards which is the largest of all the events and hosts some 5,000 guests.

WORDS BY Caroline Paris

The 2016 edition has now come and gone but it will most definitely not be forgotten in a hurry. First of all, the choice of location this year - Fort St Angelo, was actually a new destination to many Maltese and foreigners alike, and it is truly an awe-inspiring site. The second impact is that the exhibits by Malta’s fashion designers really impressed this year. The talent on our shores can no longer be denied and the huge leaps in quality from one year to the next speaks volumes of promise. It was great to see a number of new faces joining the regulars this year and, in this article, we will meet four of these designers. One thing about artists that is generally always true is that there’s always an interesting story behind them and their work. This is especially true in a small island like Malta, where a career in the arts is not generally the welltrodden path.

01

Adalia is a milliner who has recently launched her brand AB Headpieces. She exhibited an extensive array of different bespoke creations which were received very well and appreciated, not only for their originality but also for their high quality and precision. It was Saz Mifsud’s and Carla Grima’s first time exhibiting at Malta Fashion Week too. However both of these women are actually not that new to the local industry they have been gaining a steady reputation for a couple of years now. Incidentally, they are specialised in creating wonderful patterns on silk fabric - Saz’s focus lies mainly on scarves and made-to-measure, custom clothing, whilst Carla has been focusing on creating entire clothing lines and ready-to-wear collections. Last but definitely not least is Nathan

65

FASHION

Micallef who, whilst still very young, showed immense talent and dedication in his capsule collection that led him to win the Best New Designer Award at the Malta Fashion Awards. His collection focused on knitwear with different textures and fabrics worked together in various, unique ways. Adalia has always had a love for arts, crafts and fashion. She is an exfashion model so she had a prior view in the industry but, actually, is also a graduate in the Communications and Marketing sector. Although she is working hard at developing her brand, she has not discarded her love of marketing and, during the day, she works as a marketing and business development manager within the private sector. She’s also expecting a

child in the coming months, so she most definitely has her hands full. Carla Grima is a lovely girl with a winning smile and a friendly, approachable demeanour who loves Instagram. She moved back to Malta after working for Marc Jacobs in Paris and Jonathan Saunders in the UK. Apart from the work on her brand, she also teaches fashion design courses for beginners, produces prints for upholstery and recently also started working as a fashion editor for a local magazine. Upon meeting Saz Mifsud for the first time, one really gets that feeling of meeting an artist. Her style is interesting and eclectic, and makes you want to know more. She spent one year at Central Saint Martins in London pursuing a diploma

in Art and Design. She then went on to University for the Creative Arts in Rochester Kent where she studied Fashion Print Design. She is extremely grateful to be able to say that her brand is her career and wouldn't change this for the world. Nathan on the other hand, is still a 21-year old student and is currently studying at the London College of Fashion. I asked these four designers to describe their vision of the people who wear their clothes. Saz describes the woman as someone who wants to experience freedom through dress whilst the man is one who feels he needs a bit of quirk in his wardrobe. Nathan’s woman is confident and likes to push boundaries with her fashion choices, whilst Carla believes that her pieces are for summer lovers and Mediterranean travellers. Adalia feels that her headpieces are for women of all ages from baby girls to Holy Communion girls and brides, to guests at weddings and tea parties.

FASHION

Adalia Favourite designer? Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones. Fashion love ? Various! have no idea where to start... must be the reason why I'm such a shopaholic. Fashion hate? A man with low waist jeans with full boxer shorts showing and girls with micro skirts and shorts. Favourite food? Fresh fish carpaccio...steak...chocolate fondant or casatella. Favourite Social Media Platform? Facebook. Any hobbies? Travelling abroad, a good read and fabric/ materials manipulation. 01 02

To close off, I asked these four artists to describe their feelings about the fashion industry in Malta. All four designers believe that the Maltese fashion industry is growing and that there is a much larger appreciation for local productions. However, they also feel that more awareness needs to be made to allow for more growth and that our standards and quality expectations need to grow to be on par with international levels. Adalia feels frustrated when people expect low prices and seem to fail to understand the difference between mass produced and handmade. Saz feels that there is a lack of respect between certain people within the industry this saddens her as she thinks that such a small community cannot afford to be unkind to each other. Nathan feels that it is hard to get accepted and acknowledged for one’s work and Carla bemoans the limited access to local production.

Carla Grima Favourite designer? Cristobal Balenciaga (when he was still alive and designing) and Haider Ackermann. Fashion love ? Big bags, loose clothes, print on print. Fashion hate? Too tight, too chequed, too animal printed. Favourite food? Fishy feast. Favourite Social Media Platform? Instagram - I’m a lover of visuals. Any hobbies? Cooking, sailing, designing, weekend adventures. Should models be skinny? I prefer a slimmer look. A model that takes care of her body-eats well and trains. This suits my brand identity.

Should models be skinny ? No, skinny is not healthy but they should take care of their body by eating well and working out. Nathan Favourite designer? Riccardo Tisci who is the creative director for Givenchy and Raf Simons who was the creative director for Dior. Fashion love? Oversized textured coats for women. Fashion hate? Leggings for trousers. Favourite food? I do love a good burger. Favourite Social Media Platform? Facebook/ Instagram. Any hobbies? Travel. Should models be skinny ? I think models should be of a healthy size, I believe that we are free of the skin and bone kind of image.

erched high above the Sliema side of Marsamxett harbour is Fort Tigne’, constructed during the latter part of the Knights of St. John’s rule of the island, in 1792 to be precise. The unique view from its perimeter, especially at twilight or after dark, is possibly one of the best one can have of Malta’s walled capital city Valletta, a UNESCO world heritage site. This same view can also be enjoyed from the deck-like terraces of The Chophouse restaurant, situated just below the fort.

In little more than four years, The Chophouse has established itself as one of Malta’s favourite restaurants. I choose the word 'favourite' as it is not solely the good food that attracts both foreigners and locals to this establishment. It is also the impressive selection of wines, whiskies and other fine spirits; the happy, welcoming staff; the magnificent view. For many this is a venue where to impress a foreign visitor, to celebrate a

special occasion or maybe just to enjoy a superb meal. In this year’s summer menu, Chef Steve Mamo masterfully combines the traditional with the contemporary, and the freshest local produce with selected imported fare. Topping the list are the grilled meats, ranging from the hallmark Chateaubriand to the grilled flank steak with kimchi. Malta’s national dish, rabbit, makes its appearance in the form of a slow-cooked pressed belly, simply cooked with garlic and white wine. The entrees cater for diverse tastes and include local octopus and sea bass dishes. Fresh fish is delivered daily. 01

The precisely climate-controlled wine cave boasts one of Malta’s top selections, including the island’s choicest wines. The whisky bar – The Chophouse is the seat of the Malta Whisky Club – offers an extensive variety both blended and not from around the world. The Terrace restaurant enjoys views of Malta’s Capital City across Marsamxett harbour, in an 18th century Grand Tour traveller’s words, 'One of the finest vistas in Europe.' Jot The Chophouse down at the top of your 'to do' list in Malta. You’ll be happy you did.

Meet the Team? Q: Hello Carl, Lorraine & Kim, tell us a bit about yourself. Carl: I am a 22 years old Swedish lad enjoying my life to the fullest. I’ve been living in Malta for more than a year now. I started working at Videoslots from the first day I arrived. I work in the Games Department making sure we are up to date with all the latest game releases. Lorraine: I’m the office & events coordinator also known as the centre of the office as I am Maltese and my colleagues generally ask me all sorts of questions! Kim: I have been in Malta for 4 years now but only joined Videoslots as an affiliates Manager a year ago & it has been a great choice.

Q: VideoSlots is a huge success in the i-gaming industry, How do you think it stands out & why have you chosen to join the kickass team over others? Carl: I think that Videoslots stands out from other online-casinos because we have the power and will to be innovative and come up with new ideas. With over 1500 different games, we strive to deliver the best experience in both gaming and service.

Q: How do you manage your time between enjoying your social life & a busy schedule at work? Carl: I don’t really find it too hard to enjoy my social life along with my busy work schedule. During the week I have time to do important stuff like go to the gym, be social with friends etc. I try to plan the fun activities for the weekends to enjoy them 100% and put work aside for some time. Lorraine: I work much better when I’m left unsupervised. It’s a job that hits all the areas I enjoy & it does not feel like work. The industry is entertaining in itself & it’s a fun community to be part of. I’m quite a social butterfly so basically I’m in my element. Kim: My work involves entertaining people & networking so it’s an all round the clock schedule, but I like what I do so it is easy to deliver results when you are satisfied with what you are doing.

Q: If you can give a suggestion to people who would like to move to Malta what would it be?

Carl, Lorraine

& Kim

JOB Slots

Carl: If you want to move to Malta, my suggestion would be just go for it. Once you are here you will discover how easy everything works, lots of job possibilities, not too hard to find an apartment and you will make new friends from the first day. It might be a good idea to come here for a weeks’ vacation to have a look around. Lorraine: Even though I always looked for better opportunities abroad, I always said I wish I was a foreigner living in Malta as life is pretty easy… I would never like to ask myself “what if?!”, we get one life but if we do it right, its enough, so pack your bags & send me an email on jobs@videoslots.com

Interested in working in the iGaming Industry

YES!

Then what are you waiting for? Send your cv to: jobs@videoslots.com

Kim: People think too much….. Just do it!

Kim: When I joined, we had just relocated at the new office which was a clear sign that we were set to grow. Since then the hard work has been proved and shown in the awards we have won in London at LAC2016 which is making my job a lot easier to attract new opportunities.

Q: What inspired you to move to Malta? Carl: I actually moved to Malta because my girlfriend did, been enjoying this lovely island from day one. Kim: I left Sweden a long time ago & lived in sunny places ever since. 4 years ago I was offered an opportunity in Malta which seemed like a good option as it was booming. Weather never disappoints, it’s got a bilingual population & settling in was really easy.

Q: Now, that you know Malta well, tell us 3 things you love about living and working here Carl: I love the atmosphere here in Malta, you can enjoy a party weekend vacation whenever you want. You can enjoy the sun almost all year round and most of all, finding a job is easy ti come about. Being away has helped me grow as a person and I company. have widened my position in the compan Kim: Laid back life, climate (yes im mentioning it again) & the friends I have met.

Q: Future plans for Videoslots & yourself? Lorraine: As cheesy as it may sound… Growing within the company … who knows maybe other offices around the globe will open & I will relocate again.

POOR PROSTHETIC DESIGN

T

he replacement of missing teeth may be executed differently. These mainly differ in two ways; a removable prosthesis or a fixed one. A removable prosthesis comes in the form of a denture, whilst a fixed prosthesis is either a bridge or an implant. A removable denture utilises a framework, which engages in-between the missing teeth and clips onto the remaining teeth present. A fixed bridge is cemented on one or more of the remaining teeth using them as anchors for the missing teeth. An implant is an independent unit, which does not rely on any other teeth and therefore does not cause any loading force or damage to other teeth.

A Case STUDY A young woman in her late 30s with a history of a failed root canal treatment of the upper left lateral incisor requiring extraction has had the tooth replaced with a conventional fixed bridge. Figure 1 shows a conventional-porcelain-fusedto-metal bridge anchored to the upper left central incisor and the upper left canine, replacing the upper left lateral incisor. The bridge is also replacing some lost hard and soft tissue in the form of bulky pink porcelain, filling the space in-between both supporting teeth.

Advantages of this design • • •

Intra-oral before treatment

Quick production: one-to-two days Relatively cheap Good lifetime track record for bridgework

Disadvantages of this design • • • •

Poor hygiene control Poor aesthetics Dependent on the supporting teeth; the central incisor and the canine Continued loss of bone and consequent recession of the gum

Patient complaints • • • • •

Indentation in the bone Gum recession Inability to clean properly Poor aesthetics Lack of confidence

Treatment Plan 1.

Consultation and photography: an integral part of treatment planning 2. Impressions for study models 3. Replacement of metal-porcelain bridge with temporary acrylic resin bridge: this temporary bridge will be used throughout the whole duration of the treatment until the final definitive crowns are inserted 4. Implant placement with simultaneous bone grafting in the position of the missing lateral incisor. The bone graft is used to replace the missing bone and bulk up both the hard and soft tissue, improving aesthetics and hygiene maintenance 5. Modification of the temporary bridge during the four-month healing process of the implant and graft to shape the gingiva and achieve an aesthetic improvement. 6. Impression and cementation of three new all-ceramic metal-free crowns on the central incisor, canine and implant. 7. Review and maintenance plan.

Extra-oral after treatment

Extra-oral after treatment

This implant treatment modality differs in timeframe from the previous conventional bridge by four months. The new expense is also more than double. Having said that, most patients with this dental history weigh out a gain in confidence

and aesthetics more than anything else. Patients are also capable of maintaining better hygiene with single unit prosthetic designs. Patient motivation and goals are key to a successful treatment plan. Ask your dentist!

The rise and rise of the boutique hotel WORDS BY Veronica Stivala

T

he idiosyncratic charm of the boutique hotel, and the B&B, means that not only are tourists opting for more personalised holiday accommodation, but that the business savvy are rushing to meet these demands and setting up weird and wonderful vacation establishments. There’s a particular charm particular to the boutique hotel and the modern B&B. More akin to a welcoming home, a quirky pad or a charming residence, the boutique hotel and B&B are fast becoming many travellers’ choice of vacation residence. Just as many (although not all) prefer to go out on their own and personalise their trips abroad by drawing up their own itinerary tailored to their own unique tastes and to allow for a small or large dose of the impromptu and local adventure, the choice of holiday accommodation is veering towards the smaller and more individualised, as opposed to grander, larger hotels.

The term boutique hotel was coined by American entrepreneur Steve Rubell in 1984, when he compared the Morgans Hotel, the first hotel he owned, to a boutique. The term then spread to be to describe small hotels in North America and the UK which have between 10 and 100 rooms in unique settings with upscale accommodations. They originally appeared in the 1980s in major cities such as London, New York, and San Francisco. We are seeing a search for the authentic in a world that has perhaps become too homogenous and discovered. This is especially the case in ‘over-touristed’ places such as Paris and London, which tourists, of course, still want to visit, but which they feel they want toexperience in a more indivdualised manner. The rise of social media surely has something to do with this where we find ourselves with easy access to either contacting individuals directly to find places off the beaten track as well as being influenced by these such travellers who have gone and done things their own way, leaving us wishing to do the same. Indeed, the term boutique hotel has become synonymous with individualised style, personalised service, and exclusivity, to the extent that many global chains have jumped on the band wagon, creating their own boutique brands. B&Bs have also joined this trend and holidaymakers can enjoy the choice of luxury bed and breakfasts to sprawling inns that cater to their various whims and fancies. From refurbished 12th century baroque, renaissance, and gothic buildings in Prague, to 270-degree skyline views and infinity pools at a hip boutique hotel in Bangkok, to country-themed rooms (think Morocco, Spain, Italy, and France) and rich “the

HOSPITALITY

One proprietor who has had a pretty residence for 18 months notes how despite the establishment’s relatively short timeframe, it has seen marked interested. This particular place is set up in an old. The owner attributes this homelike feel as one of the reasons behind its success: “We are a residence in an old house and we are there most of the time. People like that familiarity, plus the fact that they are living in a traditional Maltese building.”

furnishings made from century-old reclaimed wood, a converted 18th-century palazzo in Tuscany, to an establishment that melds designer chic with Down Under hospitality in, you guessed it, Australia, the boutique hotel and B&B know no bounds when it comes to originality, blended with a good dose of charm and personal style. The phenomenon, if you will, has now spread worldwide and has finally hit Malta. The boutique hotel and B&B is still in its nascence on the small islands with many having been set up in the past two years. But just as this trend fast became popular in the rest of the world, so in the Maltese Islands is the boutique hotel speedily catching up. It is safe to say that the trend for boutique hotels in Malta has properly picked up pace in the past two years.

The proprietor greets and befriends her guests at her homely house, making it a point to “make them feel like they are at home away from home” with them. Despite such establishments still being in their very early youth, the competition is already steep, which, naturally works to the traveller’s advantage as hospitality organisations work hard to draw guests to them. High levels of hospitality need to be maintained with all the usual rules included, from hygiene, to quality, service, and so on. In Malta, while such accomodations can be found all over the island, there are conentrations in the bigger cities such as Valletta, Sliema, , St Julian’s , Rabat, Birgu and Naxxar. So why the sudden surge in Malta? Patti and Giuseppe Piazzi, who renovated and converted a farmhouse in Gozo, attribute this to

84

HOSPITALITY

tenders that were offered woke more interest financially”. As with the reason for the global rise in the boutique hotel, these proprietors also say that there was a need for more charming setups as well as a trend for people to opt for smaller type accommodations with top level service and décor. The two also point out an interesting human phenomenon: that we like to copy. Of course this has its pros and cons, but they are right to say that once a number of people start something (they were thought to be crazy at first), others soon follow the trend once they see that it is popular. Asked about who their clients are, the proprietors reveal that they have 'all types', and all age-groups, from honeymooners, to writers, musicians, people in the movie industry, families. Patti and Giuseppe note that “your standards of hospitality cater for the type of clients you attract”. Another proprietor notes that, generally, the clients tend to be educated people and that she sees many students here to learn English. Offering good service is paramount, of course. Admittedly, as with all organisations in the services sector and beyond, not all are up to scratch or do they live up to all they preach to be and, as with other holiday services, the traveller must do their research thoroughly before making the choice.

WINE FESTIVAL

THE DELICATA CLASSIC WINE FESTIVAL Malta’s greatest wine event of the year is back for its 15th year, at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in the nation’s capital, Valletta, and it promises to be grander than ever, from 4th till 7th August, each evening from 7pm until midnight.

B

almy, starlit Maltese summer nights, delectable wines, great music and friendly hospitality; the Delicata Classic Wine Festival is all rolled into one.

The way it works is straightforward. Entrance is free. To try the many Maltese wines on show, you just purchase a wristband for the night and a souvenir glass (which is yours to keep) for €14 right outside the entrance of the gardens. The last glasses and wristbands are sold at 11pm, the last wine poured at 11.30pm and the festival closes at midnight. Enjoy responsibly and note that no glasses will be sold or alcohol served to anyone under the age of 17. This commemorative 15th edition sees the introduction of a fast track facility for Delicata Privilege Card holders who need not queue at the cash points provided they have pre-booked online. At the Delicata Classic Wine Festival live cooking stalls will be serving an array of Maltese favourites such as suckling pig, other Mediterranean and Indian dishes, sushi as well as a selection of pizza, various cheese and charcuterie platters, and desserts.

For the first time, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night only, a unique, fully-seated wine and fine dining experience dubbed Salute! is laid on at the reserved lower level of the Saluting Battery. Salute! offers a delicious menu of plated dishes and matching Maltese wines by Delicata, all served under the starry sky over the Grand Harbour which is steeped in history to which every course and each glass aspire to add a new enjoyable chapter. It is organised by the Delicata winery in close collaboration with Island Caterers. Seating is limited and event tickets are sold at €45 per person. Festival revellers will be entertained by live performers. Presenter Mireille Bonello will compere the event. Every evening there is a double-bill starting with an opening-night concert on Thursday by Cash & Band and Red Electrick, followed on Friday by Planet Seed and the Spiteri Lucas Band. FOODIES

Fly for the Food WORDS BY Helen Raine

There are some destinations where eating the local food is such a key part of the travel experience that you hardly need to bother setting foot in a museum or exploring an ancient site. And becoming a travel foodie needn’t break the bank either; these five cities offer plenty of food-on-the-fly that will make your trip.

Catania, Sicily In Catania, even some of the petrol stations have gourmet food. Instead of an ancient, cellophane-wrapped pasty, you’ll find treats like freshly baked pane con la milza (essentially a brioche stuffed with fried pork); or try cassatelle alla trapanese, moonshaped treats filled with sweet ricotta and chocolate chips. Even the humble sandwich seems better in Sicilian hands; try one made of filone (yeasty bread studded with fennel, anise and sesame seeds) – the best are rubbed with olive oil, sprinkled

with salt and then stuffed with a tangy pecorino cheese, local tomatoes and perhaps a couple of marinated anchovies. For dessert, it’s hard to beat a granita on a hot day (or any day really). In the olden days, ice was brought down from the Sicilian mountain peaks, crushed with fresh fruit and finished off with a hearty dollop of whipped cream. The ice might be made in freezers now, but don’t accept imitations when it comes to the fruit – the most delicious ones are still made with tangy local berries, melons or perhaps peach with a hint of mint (there’s also a coffee version). Ice-cream lovers might prefer a brioche (a sweet milk roll) stuffed with gelato.

FOODIES

Paris

Vienna

French women are less obese than most of the rest of Europe, but quite how they avoid piling on the kilos is a mystery when you look at the culinary options in Paris. A favourite French food-to-go is the classic ham sandwich (jamon au beurre); try to find one with genuine Breton pork – you’ll taste the difference – loaded onto an ultra-crusty French baguette.

Two things probably come to mind when you think of Vienna apfelstrudel and sausages; the Austrians are experts at both. The strudel (the word derives from the German word for ‘whirlpool’) is a delicious, layered pastry, usually stuffed with apple, cinnamon and raisins. Add vanilla ice-cream to get seriously decadent.

If you prefer a cheese sarnie, try the Croque Monsieur, essentially gruyère cheese and ham sandwiched between two slices of brioche bread, brushed with butter and toasted or fried. The crêpe is the ultimate Parisian street dessert. Get one with real dark chocolate sauce – Nutella can’t hold a candle to it – and cough up the extra to load it with strawberries or bananas. Or try macarons, bite-sized delights where almond meringue-biscuits are sandwiched together with buttercream. The traditional flavours are vanilla, coffee, pistachio or chocolate but, lately, a whole host of other options have been cropping up (avoid any with dayglow colours – they probably use food colourings).

Viennese sausages are generally sold at stands, which are said to date back to the time of the Empire, when sausage stalls were set up to provide employment to returning war veterans. Try a ‘Burenwurst’ (a slightly spicy option), a ‘Käsekrainer’, which has some cheese inside, or stun your stomach with a ‘Bosna’, which comes inside a roll with onions and a spicy onion-mustard sauce. For breakfast on the hoof, the ubiquitous ‘Kaisersemmel’ is a good option. It’s a bread roll, just… better; the good ones are kneaded for longer and have five folds on the top which makes them crustier. Top with local cheese, a bacon called ‘speck’, boiled eggs, sausages and ham.

Dessert should be a Sachertorte at least once. This elegant choccie cake is balanced on a meringue base and topped with apricot jam and chocolate icing – think of it like a very souped-up Jaffa Cake.

Amsterdam Krokets are the ultimate Dutch snack. They are usually made from beef or veal rolled in breadcrumbs and deep fried. Eat them as they are, or inside a bun slathered with mustard. Bitterballen are similar (essentially deep fried meatballs). If you prefer fish, look for Kibbling, chunks of North Sea fish battered and fried, then served with a kind of tartar sauce (Lekkerbekje are the same, except the fish isn’t cut up so small). They are brilliant for soaking up the excess beer on a heavy night out. And if you’re feeling very adventurous, try raw herring – it’s surprisingly delicious. You’ll find it on street carts, usually served with pickles and a bun. The Dutch are also into pancakes; theirs are somewhere between a thick American pancake and an ultra-thin French crepe. They are often savoury and, like a pizza, loaded with cheese and salami. For dessert, Stroopwafels are the glutton’s way forward in Amsterdam. They are made from two slices of baked dough, gooed together by a butter-sugar syrup and flavoured with cinnamon. You can find them in supermarkets but the best ones are fresh from the bakery or markets. Alternatively, save your calorie count for Poffertjes, fluffy little buckwheat pancakes served with butter, sugar and sometimes other offerings such as strawberries or cream.

Berlin

01

Flying-foodies should put ‘currywurst and chilli’ at the top of their Berlin to-do list; the street sausage staple is so popular here that it even has its own special threepronged fork. The spiciness of the chili varies between vendors so try a few to compare. If you want to ruminate on sausages for longer, you can hit the Deutsches Currywurst Museum afterwards

The German potato pancake has had something of a rebirth in Berlin too, with retro outfits serving them extra-crispy and topped with smoked fish, soft cheese or the traditional applesauce and sour cream.

The obligatory takeaway dessert here is a Berliner – except it isn’t called that in Berlin. Berliner means ‘doughnut’ in the rest of Germany, but in Berlin itself, they are called pfannkuchen (which normally means pancake). These creations will tick all your fat-carbs-sugar boxes in one jam-or-vanilla-filled culinary blow-out; don’t miss them.

Five ways to keep cool this summer Malta in summer is awesome! The long days, the outdoors-y lifestyle, the wonderful beaches. But, ask anyone, the heat can be annoying. Too much. And when that happens, you just need to beat it. Here are our top five Maltese ways of beating the heat. WORDS BY Steve Hili

1. Sleep with ice packs on your feet Night times are not much fun when you are too hot to sleep. (Not in the "I'm way too hot to think about sleeping, I'm going clubbing instead" way. In the actual it-is-too-hot temperature wise way. I'm sure you get it). So if your air-conditioning unit is on the blink, you need to think outside the box. The obvious solution is a fan, right? But with temperatures in summer often in the high 30s centigrade (°C), all a fan is going to do is cause a thermal updraft worthy of the great gliding birds. That is where ice-packs come in. Tie them to your feet. This will instantly

cool you down with the added advantage that if you aim your fan at the ice packs you'll be getting blasted with artic(ish) winds in no time. Just make sure you untie the packs from round your feet if you need to get out of bed. Otherwise you might end up flying like you are on one of those updrafts yourself.

floor against your tummy. Two things you need to be careful about. Number one - this is a well known method of causing flatulence, and, secondly, that marble can be hell to get smudge marks off. So make sure you get the house owner's permission before you do this. Especially if they are clean-freaks!

2. Lie on your tummy on a marble floor

3. Put a watermelon in a freezer and then hug it

Most Maltese houses have got marble floors. The heat, and an aversion to vacuuming, means that we've never really embraced carpets. Once summer starts to kick in, some instant relief can be found by lifting your t-shirt and laying down on this marble, feeling the cool

The Maltese watermelon is a thing of beauty. Sweet, refreshing, and also an cooling device. Find one of the big monster ones that need to be carried by two people together, and pop it in the freezer (you might have to buy a chest freezer for this one). After a few hours

LIFE HACKS

pull it out and hug it like it is a long lost uncle. Warning! Be careful not to drop it on your feet. Don't want to break any bones. Being in a cast in summer is horrible.

4. Become nocturnal Sleep during the day (in an airconditioned room, or with ice packs strapped to your feet) and do all your stuff at night. Yes, nights can still be warm (see point 1) but it is better than the daytime. Of course you might have to explain to your boss why you have pencilled in a meeting at 4am, but, then again everyone is embracing flexibility at the workplace nowadays. And a

huge advantage is that you can go clubbing on your lunch break.

5. Take shortcuts, over the water If you're a good swimmer, why not try swimming across bays instead of walking all the way around? All you need is a lilo to put your stuff on, and a towel to dry yourself off on the other side. Just a quick word of warning, lilos can be slippery and electronics and water don't mix. So maybe not a great idea if you've got a laptop. Also spending the rest of the day with salt on your body can be annoying. Although it can help you save money on tequila shots.

Air Malta assists Inspire A

ir Malta will be assisting Inspire during the months of July and August. During these months, Air Malta Cabin Crew will be collecting funds onboard the airline’s flights towards this cause.

Inspire believes that everyone has a right to equality and inclusion. Its mission is to try to help everyone with a disability achieve this by providing individuals and their families with educational, therapeutic and leisure services. Inspire also advocates for inclusion, educates the general public, raises awareness among peers, and holds the best knowledge base on disability on the island. “Today, Inspire helps over 1000 individuals with various disabilities ranging from Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyscalculia. We do this through many services and disability programmes that are offered at a highly subsidised rate or sometimes even for free. But this is only possible thanks to the voluntary donations collected from the general public,” explained Antonello Gauci – Inspire’s CEO.

Ursula Silling, Air Malta’s Chief Commercial Officer said, “Each year Air Malta organises a number of fund raising events onboard its flights to help local organisations raise money . Inspire’s work is commendable and the national airline is proud to have the opportunity to support this organisation once again. Together with the support of our customers we aim to continue helping Inspire in their hard work among those in need.” This campaign also forms part of Air Malta’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives whereby the airline supports organisations that work hard in the Maltese community. As Malta’s national carrier the airline is the only airline flying from Malta that fully supports the local community in all possible ways and every year it carries an increasing number of medical cases, including stretcher cases for treatment abroad. No other airline operating to Malta provides continued support to voluntary and non-governmental organisations like Air Malta. AIR MALTA NEWS

Air Malta increasing its cargo footprint with a global cargo sales management partner

A

ir Malta plc has announced the appointment of Network Airline Services (NAS), a global leader in the field, as its Total Cargo Management (TCM) service provider. This appointment, with a go-live date of 1st June, follows an adjudicating process after the issuance of an international request for proposals to which a number of market leaders showed interest. The TCM concept is viewed as an increasingly popular solution by a number of airlines and represents opportunities of generating additional cargo revenues from the maximisation of aircraft cargo hold capacities. This solution is expected to generate new business opportunities from various sources whilst the airline concentrates on its core business of being a passenger airline.

Apart from a guaranteed income to Air Malta, this project shall generate cost savings in terms of better synergy shared between Air Malta and NAS across important functions such as sales and marketing, pricing and revenue management, cargo reservations, revenue accounting, back-office administration, IT systems, cargo handling and interline contracts. Moreover, the TCM concept will enable Air Malta to re-group its cargo business, re-establish itself in the market place, and increase distribution channels whilst building a sound platform for the possible future growth of its cargo business as an important revenue contributor to the airline through freighter hub operations, multimodal transportation, e-commerce, doorto-door products and more.

Commenting on this appointment, John Vella, Air Malta’s Head of Cargo Sales and Marketing explained, “We are proud to team up with NAS as our preferred global cargo General Sales Agent. With over 30 years air cargo management experience, NAS is strategically positioned to assist Air Malta, and, together, roll out our exciting plans and projects which will radically transform the way we conduct our cargo business in a positive manner.” “Our vision is to strategically strengthen our position and regain a global cargo footprint and presence through NAS’s network. Locally we intend to grow our market share and become the leading carrier of choice for the carriage of cargo, courier and mail shipments, both as an airline and, more importantly, as the national carrier,” added Mr Vella. John Gilfeather, NAS Sales Director, added, “The NAS team are very proud to ave been selected by Air Malta following a comprehensive and competitive tender. We are all looking forward to working with Air Malta staff, suppliers and customers. Air Malta Cargo has an established tradition of providing excellent customer service to companies and individuals sending goods to and from Malta. A

ir Malta has moved its Malta-Moscow operation to Sheremetyevo Airport Terminal E, the airport’s newest terminal, inaugurated in 2010. The airline’s timetable has remained unchanged, operating a twice weekly service departing from Malta every Friday and Saturday, and from Moscow every Saturday and Sunday. Sheremetyevo airport is the largest and most modern airport in Russia, and one of the top 10 fastest growing airports in Europe. It handles over 31 million passengers and 265,000 aircraft movements every year. Located northwest of central Moscow, the airport is served by a variety of efficient transport modes. It is just 35 minutes away from the city centre by the Aeroexpress train. The airport’s 20 million people catchment area covers regions with the biggest concentration of business headquarters and the highest income per capita.

Sheremetyevo Airport will provide Air Malta with more operational flexibility and fits perfectly with the airline’s strategy to offer customers the best central airports with easy onward connections. Sheremetyevo Airport is a hub of Air Malta’s code share partner, Aeroflot, the National Airline of Russia. Through this code-sharing Sheremetyevo will offer Air Malta customers over 30 destinations within Russia. Air Malta is committed to the Moscow route and is the only airline offering connectivity between both countries supporting businesses and assisting the development of further tourism opportunities. Moscow is a city rich in history, art and culture. It boasts several well-known marvels such as the Red Square, the Kremlin and the famous Bolshoi Theatre. It is one of Europe’s most vibrant metropolis of more than 10 million people.

transform the way we conduct our cargo business in a positive way by growing our market share and become the leading carrier of choice for the carriage of cargo, courier and mail shipments both as an airline and more importantly as the National carrier.

What three words describe your job best? Non-standard job requisites, fast adaptability to change and tough challenges. What is the biggest challenge of your job? I think the biggest challenge is to convince others to own a strategy as if it was their own. Without this, it would be tough to implement a plan and achieve the desired goals. Do you have any hobbies?

il-bizzilla talks to John Vella Head of Cargo Sales and Marketing

How long have you been working with Air Malta? I started working for Air Malta in 1995. I joined the Fuel and Insurance Section and was seconded to Osprey Insurance Brokers. As an insurance graduate and forming part of a small team, I was responsible for a number of aspects of the nonaviation insurance program of Air Malta and its subsidiaries companies. After seven years I took up the position as Section Head Quality within the Ground Handling Department, where I worked until 2008, with specific responsibilities for achieving ISO Certification. I then moved on to Revenue Accounting within the Finance Division, taking responsibility for contract management of the Outsourced Revenue Accounting contract and Service Level Agreement. Having gained 18 years' experience with the national airline, I was promoted to Head of Ground Services and entrusted with the responsibility of ground handling strategy and restructuring implementation. As post holder for ground operations my responsibility included overseeing ground handling both locally and across our network. My current role as Head of Cargo Sales and Marketing offered an interesting challenge in terms of assessing the potential of this section as an important revenue contributor. In this respect and after careful evaluation we recently announced the appointment of a Total Cargo Management Service provider (TCM) with whom we have some very interesting plans to roll out. We are confident that through this agreement we shall radically

My hobbies are mostly related to adventure sports, which is the source of my internal energy and resilience. In particular I love sport activities where you have to control an element of fear. I am referring to a frame of mind where you silence all outside ‘noise’ and free your internal energy. This creates an adrenaline rush within me, a dose of which I look forward to as it helps with my daily life struggles. Some of the challenging sport I have practiced include bungee jumping, abseiling, rappling, sky diving, great white shark cage diving, open water shark diving, paragliding, orienteering, mircolight flights, 4X4 trips and hydro-boarding. Nowadays due to family commitments I have slowed down and my current list of activities include Sunday cook-outs with my family and kids who provide me with undivided support, picnics, camping, cycling and wine making. Which is your favourite destination and why? I managed to travel to some spectacular destinations around the world including the Garden Route in South Africa, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, South East Asia including Yap, Palau and Pohnpei in Micronesia, New Zealand, Lapland and many more. I do not have a favorite destination since each one offers diverse environmental, cultural and heritage aspects which are unique to the destination and this is what in my opinion makes travel interesting and intriguing. What are your favourite spots or tips for anyone visiting Malta? Malta offers quite an array of adventure choices for the traveller whether abseiling, 4X4 trips, cycling / off-roading or diving in our clear blue waters. For the less adventurous why not go camping, trekking along the coastline / countryside walks or maybe just strolling along the waterfront or sunbathing on one of our beautiful beaches.? I have lots of good memories so choosing a spot or adventure will not do justice but what I tend to treasure most is to share some quiet moments of peace and tranquility whether it is by the cliffs of Had-Dingli or ta’ Cenc in Gozo. They offer some spectacular and breath taking views!

Malta – The Home of Football Champions

M

alta has proved to be a 'lucky' training camp venue for three major European clubs this winter.

PSV Eindhoven returned to the Netherlands after their January break in Malta with an impressive run of form, to be crowned Champions of the Netherlands on the last day of the season. Viktoria Plzen did the same in the Czech Synot Liga winning the title with a few games to go in their regular season and Legia Warsaw managed a packed schedule brilliantly in February and March, to win their 11th Polish Ekstraklasa title and the prestigious Polish Cup. All three clubs took part in the in first ever training camp season in Malta

organised by Malta Football Camps Ltd. in which a total of 16 teams participated including top teams from the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Norway, Slovenia and the USA. In March, a number of national teams also visited Malta for training and friendly matches as a result of the MFC’s marketing efforts. Most northern and central European football competitions have their winter break between January and March, and, at this tim,e clubs are in search of milder climates to hold their training camps. It is the first time that Malta hosted such a large scale training camp season and, by all accounts, this was a great success. This would not have been possible without the close cooperation of

the Malta Football Association and Hibernians FC, who provide the football pitches. Match officials from the MFA were kept busy with a packed schedule of friendly matches offering them a unique opportunity to officiate international games. Norman Darmanin Demajo, President of the Malta Football association said “in the last few years, the number of requests from top European clubs to hold their training camps in Malta has soared. In response to this, the MFA decided to step up its efforts to upgrade its facilities to be in a better position to attract more teams and further develop this market. With this in mind, various projects were undertaken, including the installation of a new flood lighting system at the Ta’Qali

AIR MALTA NEWS

During this first season, over 230 training sessions and 16 international friendly matches took place in Malta. One of these games featured the 2015 local champions Hibernians FC' who played PSV Eindhoven and recorded a momentous victory over the Dutch side, much to the delight of the Hibs fans.

our first season we have not been disappointed! There was also awareness of the media exposure the destination would get out of high-profile teams training in our area” and the Malta Tourism Authority recognised this. Empl estimated that this year’s media value of coverage for Malta during camps was in the region of €4m.

PSV Head Coach Philip Cocu praised the Maltese side but was quick to explain that friendly games were played to test the squad; he was looking ahead at PSV’s last-16 Champions League commitments, as well as the packed domestic fixture list, and decided this was the right time to experiment. It was more important to ensure the whole squad came away [from Malta] refreshed, focused and confident." Marcel

MTA CEO Mr. Paul Bugeja commented: “Such initiatives provide a great opportunity to showcase the Maltese Islands in the respective countries from where high profile football teams are coming. For all of these reasons, MTA is pleased to offer its support so that more foreign teams make Malta their choice destination.”

Brands, the highly influential Technical Director of PSV said at the end of the season, that Malta exceeded expectations and did just what was required of their training camp. All the training sessions and friendly matches held in Malta were covered by the international media both in print and online. Friendly matches were all watched live by a large audience, either on local TV channels or streamed through the Club web sites. As an example, one of the friendly matches which took place in the Gozo Stadium between Legia Warsaw and the Norwegians of Stabeak, attracted some 300,000 viewers in Norway alone. Training Grounds and, currently in progress, is an ambitious project involving the replacment of the National Stadium playing surface at Ta’Qali, with a state of the art ‘hybrid’ pitch that will guarantee that our facilities will be in sync with the demands of such high profile teams. Officials of Hibernians FC said they were honoured and delighted with the longterm partnership with a highly respected service-provider to the football industry. “The club, our players and coaching staff can learn a lot when sharing the training facilities with such important international clubs; this is a unique situation for us. Our fans and the local community are also given the unique opportunity to see top stars of the game in action. Long may this last."

Malta Football Camps Ltd. was set up less than a year ago as a joint venture between SLFC GmbH and Alpine Travel. Hannes Empl, the CEO of SLFC GmbH, is one of the most experienced at organising training camps and friendly matches. He is a well respected licensed FIFA Match Agent and well known in football circles internationally. Born and raised in Zell am See (Austria), he is a former professional football player and is now the leading football training camp organisers and the main organisers of high-profile friendly matches and friendly tournaments. Empl is quick to say, “The first time we looked at Malta as a training camp destination we knew that all the ingredients were there; good pitches, good hotels, mild weather, friendly atmosphere and a people that love football. After

Hannes Empl stated “This year is a particularly busy one for us launching our Malta initiative and organising training camps for the likes of France, Spain, Austria and the Czech Rep and high-profile friendly matches for national teams before the Euro 2016 competition in France. We were responsible for Malta’s friendly match against the Czech Rep and Austria, and instrumental in attracting Italy to play Scotland in Malta on 29 May. Immediately after the Euros in France, the clubs summer camp season kicks-in. We will host 120 summer camps in Austria and we will be responsible for 350 pre season friendlies, which is no easy task but we are delighted with the first season in Malta and are looking forward to our second training camp season next winter. “ Bugeja, added: “The MTA believes that sports tourism is an important niche market. Most international sports events and training camps take place in Malta during the shoulder and winter months, and, therefore, have the potential to generate incremental business for Malta and Gozo when it’s mostly needed. This does not only help to make our sporting facilities more economically sustainable, but have a spill over effect on the accommodation sector, the food and beverage industry, places of entertainment, and many more. Moreover, the opportunity to showcase the Maltese Islands are all of these reasons, MTA is pleased to offer its support so that more foreign teams make Malta their choice destination. A special word of thanks goes to the local associations and sport facilities providers for their support and flexibility in making such initiatives possible.”
