I have now been at the helm of Air Malta for just three months and it has already been a remarkable journey. Air travel is continuing to expand with the International Air Transport Association predicting a record of 3.8 billion air travellers this year, up from 3.5 billion in 2015. In Malta we have also been experiencing a boom in air travel and Air Malta has been a major player in bringing more and more tourists to discover the treasures of the islands. The airline has also been instrumental to facilitate travel for Maltese to travel abroad for leisure, study, business and a multitude of other reasons. It’s November but the Maltese sun makes a visit worthwhile all year round. In the coming months we will be connecting Malta to 18 main European cities via direct flights with an operation of over 100 weekly flights. We are planning to carry over half a million passengers to and from the Maltese winter sun and thus continuing to be a driving force for the local tourism industry all year round, not just in summer. Joseph Galea, Acting CEO Air Malta
From the Editor… It has just dawned on me that a whole year has almost gone by, and yet I’m still left with a myriad of projects and ‘unfinished business’. Thankfully, there’s still a month to go, and if I get myself organised, there’s also a chance that I’ll finish my Christmas shopping before Christmas eve – there’s hoping! But the reality is that even if I actually did ever complete that list, there would always be another one right behind it, because such is life, and that’s what makes it so exciting but I digress. Loads of things happening in Malta this month, so it’s actually a really good time to be around for whatever reason. Whether it’s a cheeky weekend away from it all, a well-deserved break with the family, or some iGaming event or other, I am honoured to be the first person to welcome you to our little archipelago. We hope that you have enjoyed your stay, and look forward to hearing what you think about it. Feel free to get in touch on dana@contentfactory.com.mt and let me know in what ways Malta has exceeded your expectations. Happy holidays!

Stone Carving

Experience Arts and Crafts in gozo WORDS BY Ministry for Gozo
Over the centuries, stone, has been worked by countless generations of craftsmen in a bewildering number of remarkably ingenious ways, and for a wide range of purposes. The small exquisitely crafted Stone Circle figurines, the honey-coloured majestic limestone temple of Ta’ Pinu, Għarb, and the exquisitely carved house façades and balconies bear witness to the Gozitan people’s enduring love affair with stone carving. The creativity and sophisticated skills of Gozitan stonemasons and stone sculptors are etched ubiquitously throughout the island. The friable nature of globigerina limestone has made it possible for endless generations of stone artisans to cut, carve and shape this sedimentary rock to produce tools, such as mallets, and decorative, ornamental work such as elaborately-carved balustrades. It has also enabled them to make rockcut tombs, shape harbours, and build monumental prehistoric temples, powerful fortifications, awe-inspiring palaces, and majestic churches, together with appealing farmhouses and terraced fields. The variety of architectural styles in which the malleable Maltese rock has been shaped, and the innumerable motifs and patterns carved into it, reflect the fusion of timelessness and eclecticism embodied in the intimate Gozitan relationship with, and creative use of, stone. 01. Gozo's Citadel WORDS AND PHOTOS BY Victor Paul Borg
1. Welcome The Citadel looks magnificent after the completion of extensive restoration. This includes the fortifications, which have had deteriorated stones replaced and been cleaned from the bushes of capers. Now scenes like this – the curvaceous angularity of a bastion topped by an elaborately medieval clock-tower – can be enjoyed from the dry moat, where a garden has been laid.
2. St Mary's Cathedral Cathedral Square is dominated by St Mary’s Cathedral, which was designed by Malta’s celebrated church architect Lorenzo Gafà (his other notable churches include St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina, St Lawrence Church in Vittoriosa, and the grand parish church of żejtun). Here Gafa amplified the façade by fronting the church with a long and rhythmic flight of stairs.
3. Cathedral Square by night

Lighting is one of the high points of the restoration, and the Citadel is resplendent at night – here Cathedral Square is seen through a tunnel that arches under the ecclesiastical buildings that flank the church.

4. Alleyways The alleys of the Citadel are full of medieval atmosphere, and the single belltower of St Mary’s Cathedral is like a landmark in its triumphal singularity.
5. Welcome to the Citadel The visitors’ centre invites you to explore: it provides interesting tidbits of info about the Citadel, whetting the appetite for a wider exploration of the Citadel itself.
6. Ancient passageways Tunnels intended for military access, or as escape routes, which lead down to the dry moat, have also recently been open to the public for exploration.

A partial façade, with its two doorways leading into one of the alleys, is what remains of a house after the 1551 raid by Ottoman forces, which overran the Citadel and destroyed many of its houses in the ensuing battle.

8. Get interactive The visitors’ centre in set in the chambers of a defunct reservoir, and has electronic display screens that offer snippets of historical info, as well as a documentary about the Citadel.
9. In the military The battery or redoubt that juts out from the northeast mainline fortifications was the first line of defence in this part of the Citadel. It was accessible through a tunnel that could be bombed and blocked in the event of a retreat by the redoubt’s defenders.
10. From the past The skeletal remains of a Phoenician internment in an amphorae, which was unearthed in Comino, is one of the highlights of the Museum of Archeology.
11. A historic house The Gran Castello Historic House has exhibits of Gozo’s folk trades, but it is the house itself that is the primary reason to visit this building: it’s a medieval house full of staircases and rooms tucked here and there.

High-Flying Dentistry: Revamping your smile! Extra-oral before treatment
Extra-oral after treatment
V
ery often patients walk into the clinic with specific wants and thoughts. Most of their ideas stem from discussions about their teeth with their peers and family, followed by numerous online searches. These searches may leave the patient hoping for the ideal solution for their teeth but, more often than not, this is not possible. For example, patients may wish for perfectly aligned teeth but then don't want to wear a brace. In some cases patients want to eliminate their dentures but are quickly taken aback
Intra-oral before treatment
Intra-oral after treatment by the high expense and long treatment times that implants carry. Others cannot understand how new bridges replacing their old fixed bridges attached to their natural teeth having lasted so long, cannot carry the same prognosis. Every case must be examined accurately and options for treatment thought out properly, not only to suit the patient’s wishes but also to last. Clinical examination, aided with radiography, may deliver a different unexpected picture for the patient. This may leave
the patient disheartened to proceed with any treatment. Other patients may have even been given the wrong or incomplete advice. This leaves the patient confused as to whom to trust on which treatment is best suited for them. Second opinions help and either reinforce the previous dentist's suggestions or explore an entirely different strategy. Specialists may also offer alternative specialised routes with better end results. The bottom line is that a multi-factorial approach offers the best results both in dental aesthetics and durability. This approach isn’t always needed but, in complex cases, it surely does the trick. Dentists, implantologists, orthodontists and periodontists work hand-in-hand to deliver the best final product for the patient. It is also important to mention the role of the dental technician in constructing the prosthesis, be it fixed or removable. The roles of communication and photography cannot be stressed enough. It is therefore of paramount importance to hear the full story, the options and timeframes, as well as the pros and cons of each treatment option. You cannot go wrong with an informed decision. Ask your dentist!
A Case Study (see photos above): A middle aged man wanted to change his upper four 20-year-old veneers with new whiter ones, giving a boost to his smile. His teeth were initially veneered due to numerous patched up fillings, as well as antibiotic staining. He also wanted to veneer the remaining upper and lower front teeth visible on smiling. Laser tooth whitening wouldn’t have worked very well here due to the deep antibiotic staining of the tooth tissue. Eight upper and eight lower restorations were therefore constructed. The patient was aware that his new whiter anterior teeth wouldn’t match his darker posterior teeth but this didn’t worry him as he knew his back teeth did not show on smiling.

ust listening to Chef Kurt Micallef describe his new take on a traditional Maltese dish has my mouth watering: poach an egg yolk in oil until it is lightly set so that when pierced it will form part of the sauce. For the cheeselet (ġbejna), make a fresh sheeps milk curd which is very lightly set so it melts in the mouth. Juice the cauliflower and thicken it with a natural thickener to form the base of the sauce along with the whey from the sheep’s curd. Then peel and fold fresh broad beans into the sauce. See, I told you.
London-trained at Le Cordon Bleu, Kurt is now sous chef at a leading restaurant in Mellieħa, where he cooks traditional French fine dining cuisine. He attributes his biggest learning experience to when he went to Belgium to In De Wulf, a one-Michelin star restaurant in a small village on the border of France. “The quality of ingredients and food, the skills and ideas of the chefs working there, was mind boggling,” he recalls, adding how it was there he really found his calling. “It was the food that sparked curiosity and interest in me.”
This is one of his creatively- delectable takes on traditional dishes, in this case, the soppa ta’ l-armla (literally, widow’s soup). The dish is essentially cauliflower and broad beans cooked for hours until everything is mushy with an overpoached egg and a traditional Maltese cheeselet (ġbejna) added to the mix.
Kurt has been cooking professionally for eight years, and spends his free time developing his own style. His dishes take their inspiration from nature - the ingredients themselves rather than technique. “I believe that sourcing the best ingredients possible before cooking, this is of the utmost importance,” he asserts.
It comes as no surprise that Kurt has always been drawn to food, specifically good food. Hailing from a family of butchers, he was exposed to good quality meats from a young age. His family loved food so much that often, on weekends, rather than go to a playground, Kurt’s dad would treat his family to a meal at a restaurant. But, the primary inspiration for his venturing into the world of cooking was his grandmother: “My grandmother is an excellent cook,” he muses. “Every week we would go to her house for lunch and enjoy a delicious meal. She has her own garden and grows most of the stuff she cooks,” he reminisces. “This,” he says, “was the biggest inspiration for me to start cooking.”
But while Kurt's heart lies with food, he admits he never really liked Maltese dishes because “they all looked and tasted the same”. Growing up, he began to appreciate that these were part of his heritage and took it upon himself to inject new life into traditional recipes. He has also found a clever way around making high quality food more accessible. Micallef points out how gourmand food can sometimes be daunting to those not accustomed to certain cooking techniques, but, giving them a dish which they have grown up eating, albeit seen through a new lens, is a more comfortable transition to modern cooking.

Take his traditional stuffed artichokes. Usually these are filled with anchovies, parsley and lemon scented breadcrumbs. Kurt loves the flavour combination but never enjoyed the process of taking one leaf at a time from the artichoke, dragging it between your teeth, which would leave artichoke fibres stuck in your teeth. He kept the same flavour profile but refined the dish by peeling the artichokes and cleaning them, just leaving the artichoke heart which is then poached in an anchovy stock until tender. It is then smeared with a garlic purÊe and completely covered in citrus begonias which give off a citrus flavour. The plate is then dusted with parsley powder and bottarga (cured and air dried fish roe) and some of the cooking liquid is spooned over the dish to tie everything together. And there’s more: Kurt has also taken the popular Maltese snack imqaret. Taking apart the ingredients of the small fried flaky pastries stuffed with dates and aniseed, he

turned the fried dough into an ice cream, then created a compote of dates with aniseed flavoured liquor and orange blossom water, a thick syrup made from cloves and star anise, some fried dough scraps for crunch and some anise flavoured herbs to garnish, such as fennel and chervil. “Once everything is combined on a spoon it takes you back to eating a cold version of a maqrut. This chef ’s passion for food is almost tangible and it emerges all the more in the way he speaks of it: “I believe food can bring strong emotions to people and not just provide nourishment – be it nostalgia, whimsy or just plain satiation.” Kurt's aspirations lie in sharing his food even more with the people. He already organises meals where he showcases his food and vision to small groups of people. Looking to the future, Micallef hopes to open his own restaurant. And we can’t wait… 01. But Ben knows that he has to select them carefully from a set pool of real players as the points attributed to each of his players will reflect the players’ performance in actual sporting games. His budget is limited and he needs to make sure that the players selected will yield him the highest amount of points possible. This will subsequently affect the outcome of Ben’s game. The outcome of the game is determined predominantly by Ben’s skill and knowledge on how players perform in real life rather than by chance. Does it sound like a fantasy? This is actually what Fantasy Sports is all about; a virtual dream of managing a team of professional athletes becomes a realisation of sports fans’ ultimate dream. The participants compete for prizes of a monetary value based on a scoring system that takes into account the accumulated statistics of real life professional athletes chosen as part of a fantasy team.
What started as a competitive game played amongst friends in the 20th century has matured into a billion dollar industry. Once it had migrated to the online market it grew exponentially into Fantasy Sports phenomena attracting millions of sports fans and generating billions of dollars revenue worldwide. Malta is regarded as one of the most reputable and competitive jurisdictions when it comes to remote gaming on a global level. The label was achieved through being amongst the first jurisidictions to regulate it and a consequent track record of providing transparent, fair and secure services to its gaming clients over the years. Malta is a modern IT hub that promotes various IT related products and a rather efficient process of gaming licensing.
A project to regulate games of skills, including Fantasy Sports has been on the agenda of Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) for some time. The discussion revolved around the subject of whether the Fantasy Games were in fact games predominantly dependant on skill or chance. After the process of consultation, the MGA concluded that Fantasy Games are in fact the games of skill and should be thus regulated accordingly. MGA took a position that Fantasy Sports should be regulated in an appropriate and proportionate way that addresses the level of risk presented to the consumer and thus rights of the consumers should be properly safeguarded. This change in perception when it comes to the licensing of the games of skills has been seen registered worldwide. In August 2016, Fantasy Sports (Exemption) Regulations, 2016, Laws of Malta (the ‘Exemption Regulation’) came into force exempting service providers of Fantasy Sports from obtaining licences from the MGA. This Exemption Regulation is a temporary arrangement until the new Skill Games Regulations, which are currently passing through the notification procedures of the EU Technical Regulations Information System (TRIS) Process, come into force. In terms of the Exemption Regulation, the Service Provider, for the time being, may voluntary decide whether or not to notify MGA on the offering of Fantasy Sports games. MGA envisages to closely monitor these games and check whether there are any potential risks to the consumer. Regulating Fantasy Sports as games of skill will create the balance in protecting public interest for consumers, without creating unreasonable barriers to companies offering such games. In this way, the operators will be able to nurture a viable business and provide customers with innovative and more attractive products that allow them to enjoy their passion in a safe and protected environment.

MEDITERRANEA FESTIVAL
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Astra Theatre, Gozo
Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta
Mythology has it that the charm of this island aided the most beautiful nymph Calypso to halt Ulysses on his journeys and hair-raising quests, to lull him, lure him, away from his travels for seven mystical years. Today, Gozo's charm seeks to lure its visitors into a kaleidoscope of events, a celebration at that time of year that is, in itself, magical in this part of the world. Through Festival Mediterranea's diverse events, visitors will embark on their very own cultural adventure surfing through the island's 7,000 years of known history. The festival uncovers the island in all its aspects, without eliminating the thrills of exploration and discovery. Festival Mediterranea unveils Gozo as a mosaic of Mediterranean civilisation, heritage and art. It is indeed a showpiece of a hundred things our own, an opportunity for a break from the routine of conventional life; a chance to immerse oneself in the mellow world of Gozo's autumn, and explore and live the cultural tradition of its 7,000 years of history. www.teatruastra.org.mt
If A Christmas Carol is the most popular story ever told, then this stage version is possibly the most successful recent adaptation. From Tokyo to Malta, from Munich to Hong Kong, from Liverpool to Madrid, and from Prague to Athens, audiences have been thrilled by this high powered musical production that moves the audience from tears to laughter. The actors play and sing a score which is far more exciting than a string of carols (although carols there are). Well known composer Thomas Johnson (whose credits include a WestEnd hit) has composed a score that moves and delights, at times foot stomping and at others heart-breaking. The cast is led by Anthony Pedley as Ebeneezer Scrooge, well known for his many years playing leading roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, on radio in the Archers and on Television in 'Yes minister' and 'Poirot'. The director, Paul Stebbings, is well known for his integration of music and theatre, and has won many awards in Europe and Asia. www.mcc.com.mt

The historic Grand Harbour WORDS BY Jessica Hall
M
alta’s Grand Harbour is justifiably world famous. It is a natural harbour and, over centuries, has seen a variety of vessels berthed in its waters. The Knights of Malta were probably among the first Europeans to see the need for sea power, organised on a national basis, as opposed to being the personal enterprise of merchants and sovereigns. So they set about building their navy. Galleons, carracks and all manner of vessels must have filled the Grand Harbour and its creeks. The provision, maintenance and protection of communications between the western and eastern Mediterranean was, for the most part, undertaken by those seaports which furnished the Mediterranean and the world with so many of its great sailors, Venice, Genova, Pisa and so on. Christendom in the Middle Sea depended upon the great maritime republics almost entirely for both ships and men. The natural Grand Harbour in Malta was a tremendous asset for the Knights. And it wasn’t all war for them either. They had an eye for beauty and built the Upper Barrakka Gardens, originally with a roof, where they could relax and enjoy the magnificent views. The Grand Harbour has always been bustling with activity. Nowadays, Cruise liners berth at Pinto Wharf regularly for it is one of the stops on their Mediterranean itineraries. Then there
are the cargo ships let's not forget the colourful local dgħajsas and the local cruise ships on one of their round Malta day or harbour cruises. Night time harbour excursions are becoming increasingly popular, a romantic way of seeing the harbour and parts of Malta. D. Lawrence, on a visit to Malta in the 1920s, said that the island is best seen from the sea. Then there are the yachts in the marinas of Ta’Xbiex and Cottonera where, more often than not, you'll spot super yachts wintering there. Visitors who arrive by cruise liner at sunrise are invariably impressed when sailing into Grand Harbour, at the sight of the historical architecture which relates to the island’s seafaring tradition. Across the harbour from Valletta one can enjoy the three cities collectively known as Cottonera. There is Senglea, which was heavily bombed during World War II since that is where the naval dockyard, now a private dockyard, is situated. Vittoriosa (Birgu) is where the Knights of Malta settled when they arrived from Rhodes. The third city is Cospicua or Bormla. Two forts were built in Senglea and Vittoriosa and strategically placed on a land jutting out into the harbour. Fort St Angelo is sited on the tip of Vittoriosa and has a long history. It was reputedly the site of a pagan temple, then, in

the 13 th century, a castle was built before it, finally, became a fully-equipped fortress when the Knights arrived in Malta. Fort St Angelo withstood the ottoman attacks during the Great Siege and succeeded in tearing apart a sea attack by the Turks on Senglea on 15 August 1565. By the arrival of the French in 1798, the fort became a very powerful fortification including some 80 guns, 48 of which pointed towards the entrance of the port. During the short two-year period of French occupation, the Fort served as headquarters of the French Army. Under British rule it became the headquarters for the British naval force in the Mediterranean. The British classified it as a stone frigate known as HMS Egmont and later as HMS St Angelo. The Fort suffered considerable damage in World War II but was restored in 1998, and the upper part handed back to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Fort St Michael in Senglea whose gallantry saved Malta from Suleiman’s might in 1565 was dismantelled in 1922 to make room for the town’s elementary school. However, the vedette, or gardjola, still stands and is a much photographed landmark, floodlit at night. At the extreme east end of Valletta, Fort St Elmo, named after the patron saint of mariners, rises to meet the incoming ships. It guards both Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour and contains the stunning National War Museum.

In 1565, the invading Turks opted to do away with St Elmo, before taking the brawnier St Angelo. St Elmo took over a month to fall and cost the Turks 8,000 men. In a macabre titfor-tat, the contemptuous Turks floated the headless bodies of their prisoners across the harbour, and Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette fired the heads of his prisoners from his cannons in Birgu towards the fallen St Elmo. Another 30,000 were to fall at St Angelo. Much later, during the first Italian attacks of 11 June 1940, six Maltese Royal Malta Artillery gunners lost their lives in this Fort. However, St Elmo played an important part in the defeat of the Italian seaborne attack of 26 July 1941 on the Grand Harbour. On a more prosaic note, Lower St Elmo was used as a film location for the Turkish jail in the 1978 film Midnight Express. The fort also plays a key role in the novel The Sword and Scimiter by Simon Scarrow. The restoration of St Elmo was recently completed and it is certainly worth visiting. Opposite Fort St Elmo is Fort Ricasoli, named after the knight who paid for its construction.

At the extreme east end of Valletta Fort St Elmo, named after the patron saint of mariners, rises to meet the incoming ships There are various creeks which can be seen from Upper Barrakka and other points such as St Barbara Bastion on the Valletta side. They are very effective in sheltering ships from strong winds and high seas. Kalkara Creek, and Dockyard Creek between Vittoriosa and Senglea, have their importance, while French Creek held the repair docks of the British Royal Navy. Let us not forget Marsa Creek, which provides mooring and warehousing facilities for modern commercial shipping. The latter two creeks seem like canals. Vessels belonging to the British navy are rarely seen in the Grand Harbour these days. When an aircraft carrier or an important British ship arrives in the harbour the newspapers announce it for it has become quite an event. The Grand Harbour seen in the light of day provides a different ambience to that at night, when the fortifications are floodlit, the lights in the towns twinkle and sometimes, when there is a festa, there are fireworks. Day or night Grand Harbour has a kind of magic. 01. Fort St Elmo 02. Fort St Angelo Gates in Vittoriosa

Perfection in Palermo
I
f perfection is what you’re looking for Palermo is probably not the spot. A hotchpotch of the cultures that invaded her shores since before history was written, left its beautiful mark on the city. Its streets are chaotic, its buildings are dishevelled and its residents are an inscrutable lot, the best way to get an feel for this incredible city is to wander the streets of the old city, where different architectural designs point to the different invaders that claimed their stakes on the city at some point during their turbulent history.
Just a stone’s throw from Maltese shores, Sicily is a popular destination for local holiday-makers that is often underrated, possibly due to its proximity. Palermo, Sicily’s capital, has plenty to offer whether you are looking for a cultural pitstop, a beach holiday or simply want to learn about different cultures through food and night-life. If you’re looking for perfection through variety then Palermo definitely is the right spot.
CULTURE Like many buildings in Palermo, the Duomo (cathedral) is characterised by a long history of additions, alterations and restorations from 1185 to the 18th century. Built on the site of a Muslim mosque, which itself was built over an early Christian basilica, the archbishop’s main aim was to surpass
TEXT SUBMITTED BY Air Malta
the glory of the magnificent cathedral of nearby Monreale and this became the architectural battleground for “The Battle of the Two Cathedrals.” Also known as the Royal Palace of Palermo, the Palazzo dei Normanni was once the seat of the Kings of Sicily during the Norman domination, and is today home to the regional parliament of Sicily. One of the main highlights of the palace is the Palatine Chapel, situated on the ground floor. The Catacombe dei Cappuccini is one of Palermo’s most sobering places. Built in 1599, wealthy Palermitani filled the catacombs with the bodies of their privileged loved ones. 8,000 of the wealthiest deceased in their finest clothes, hats and lace are laid in rows beneath the church. The most famous addition to the catacombs is a two-year-old girl named Rosalia Lombardo who died in 1920 and was embalmed using a method that has preserved her body so that she looks like she is just sleeping, almost 100 years after her death. Watch an opera at the Teatro Massimo. The third largest opera house in Europe (and the largest in Italy) you may recognise this place from the final scenes of The Godfather. You can take a guided tour around the theatre everyday from 9:30am to 6pm or do it right and get yourself a ticket to an opera or a ballet.
43
TRAVEL Opera dei Pupi is one of the long-standing Sicilian traditions. The play is a theatrical representation of Frankish romantic poems such as the Song of Roland or Orlando Furioso. Don’t expect to understand much as it is performed in a Sicilian dialect that even Italians find difficult to follow. There is no script and the act is mostly improvised with the 20 plus characters played by just two puppeteers. Be prepared for some gruesome scenes as knights are sliced in half!
sure you go with an open mind and empty belly. If understanding a city through its food culture is your thing, then why not take a cooking class, where you can learn the whole process of cooking a Palermitan meal, from shopping for ingredients in Palermo’s oldest market, to cooking and enjoying your meal.
FOOD MARKETS
As much as we love this little city, getting outside in the scorching heat is a must with the incredible beaches the coastal areas of the province of Palermo has to offer. From Balestrate to Pollina, the coastline is approximately 150km long offering beautiful natural landscapes and pristine environments. Long, sandy beaches or wild, rocky cliffs there is something for everyone along the coast, whether it is lazing around on the beach with the kids playing in the sand, hiking up rocky cliffs or snorkelling or diving in the pristine waters.
BEACHES
Palermo ranks as one of the world’s top destinations for street food. Snacking on the street is a centuries-old tradition in Palermo, born of both practicality and poverty. Although street food has recently gained popularity with celebrity chefs offering their take on humble dishes, street food in Palermo remains true to its roots. Street stalls offer the authentic taste of Sicilian culture featuring flavours that range from the familiar (pizza-like sfincione) to the exotic (chickpea fritters with minty potato croquettes and pani ca’ meusa – spleen sandwiches and skewered entrails). Palermo’s back streets offer the most calories per euro with street snacks available for as little as €1 or €2.
Mondello is the closest beach to the city with some rocky areas on both sides of the beach for those who would like to get away from the madding crowd. Capi Gallo has an amazing nature reserve with crystal clear waters and white rocks. Addaura, on the opposite coast is a more upmarket location and the prefect spot to enjoy a cocktail on a comfy sunbed. Sferracavallo is a little fishermen’s village that will make you feel like you travelled back in time. This place is best known for its incredible seafood restaurants on the waterfront.
The three main markets are Vucciria, Ballaro and Capo, all within walking distance from each other in the heart of Palermo. One of the best things about these markets is that they never sleep. After dark Vucciria and Ballaro turn into night-life hubs where you can enjoy a good glass of house wine, a street snack and a chat with the locals.
GETTING THERE Air Malta started operating a twice weekly direct flight every Monday and Thursdays between Malta and Palermo last July. Flights prices including taxes and charges start from Eur49 one-way. Total flying time is under an hour.
Whether you are wandering the streets on your own, or taking one of the organised tours around the markets and stalls – some of which are recommended by the likes of Jamie Oliver, make

COMINO PEOPLE

Welcome to Comino, Population: 4 The story behind the family that runs an island. WORDS BY LovinMalta
F
or any Maltese child crossing the Gozo Channel, the same question nearly always crops up: "Do any people live on Comino?" Their eyes shine as they hear the urban legends of giant rats, mutant pigs and unspeakable monsters that allegedly roamed the island at night, but the truth behind the real inhabitants of one of our archipelago's smallest islands is just as fascinating. Enter Salvu ta’ Kemmuna and his family. Today, the only four people living on Comino are Salvu Vella, his brother Anglu, their aunt Maria and cousin Evangelista (affectionately known as Veggie), who does all the housekeeping for the family. His family has lived on the island for over a century, but at 64 years old, Salvu remembers a time when he was actually part of a community of 35 people living on Comino. Now, they are the only ones left. Salvu is a true Jack of all trades; he designs, makes and repairs everything on his own, and has become a specialist in customised vehicles. Sometimes, constructing something requires

getting several small pieces at a time by boat, which is a long and arduous process in of itself. That doesn't stop Salvu of course, and one of his latest inventions includes an amazing hovercraft assembled from scrap from a newspaper printing plant. He admits that this was always a dream for him, "flying over the waves." He even constructed a remote-controlled trailer for his boat that lets him set it in the sea without even getting his feet wet! Pretty much all of the outside contact that Salvu's family have is via Father Scerri, a priest who has been visiting them every Saturday for 50 years to celebrate mass. Blessings are not the only thing that Father Scerri brings with him, however "he brings everything for us: medicine, food, everything." Every week, Father Scerri and Salvu celebrate mass as priest and server, with his brother, cousin and aunt their sole congregation.
While a lot of people firmly believe that Comino has some of the most beautiful beaches and stretches of land in the Maltese archipelago, no one seems to have as much dedication to the tiny island as Salvu. An average summer day starts at 6.30am and sees him driving to and from various landmarks around the island (most notably Blue Lagoon and Saint Mary's Tower) to make sure that everything is running smoothly. Life wasn't always this busy, of course it's hard to believe, but Salvu remembers a time when it was just his family swimming in a completely empty Blue Lagoon! Would Salvu or his family live anywhere else in Malta? Definitely not even Gozo was described as too loud and busy for his aunt Maria! Let's hope that Comino doesn't eventually suffer the same fate (which Salvu is currently scared of) and that remains the true tiny jewel it's been for centuries.

VALLETTA PLAQUES WORDS BY Giselle McKenna
V
alletta, Malta’s capital city, is no stranger to being written about and there’s good reason for that. Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1980, Valletta was built in the 16th century during the time of the Order of St John, and named after Grand Master La Valette, who lay the first stone, but didn’t live to see the finished result of the city. The city’s history is well documented in various books and websites, and visitors flock to it on a daily basis – locals are mainly there to work and shop, but tourists grab the opportunity to walk through its streets steeped in history and culture. Although there are features to attract your attention at eye-level while walking through Valletta, it also happens to be one of those cities that retains many fascinating stories at a higher level, so looking up and around is recommended if you want to catch some interesting and quirky elements. This occurred to me one day when I was idly strolling through the main thoroughfare of Republic Street and happened to cast my eye on a plaque upon which was inscribed the name of a very famous English poet – Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the founders of the Romantic movement in literature. The plaque is located on the wall just outside the entrance to the Casino Maltese, which is not, in fact, a casino, but rather an exclusive club for members of the (mainly) legal profession. The plaque states: Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Renowned English poet and writer worked here 1804-1805. He worked at the club for a short period at the beginning of the 19th century,
presumably as Acting Public Secretary of Malta under the Civil Commissioner, Alexander Ball, when Malta was under British rule. Below this plaque is another small one which details the history of the Casino Maltese, explaining that it was acquired in 1744 by the Order of St John. A few metres away from this plaque one enters the lovely St George’s Square, with its seating area and dancing fountains. The square is flanked by The Grandmaster’s Palace on one side and the Main Guard building on the other. On the side of the imposing Main Guard there’s another plaque, which, although it doesn’t reference an internationally-acclaimed poet, does make reference to one of Malta’s foremost moments as an independent nation – the first time that the Maltese national anthem was played by a local band club.
After World War I the 8th September wasn’t being celebrated as a national day on the island, and it was the two Valletta band clubs that used to organise a Commemorative Evening to mark the day. It was on this occasion in 1936 that the King’s Own Band became the first band to play the Maltese national anthem in public in St George’s Square; this proved to be a momentous occasion in Malta’s history and was a huge honour for the band club. The plaque was mounted on the 50th anniversary of this event as is explained in the Maltese inscription: Biex jitfakkar meta 50 sena ilu il-King’s Own Band kienet l-ewwel banda li daqqet l-Innu Malti 1936-1986. Across the square stands the impressive Grand master’s Palace which houses the Palace Armoury and State Rooms. The wall of the Palace reads like a diary of important events in Malta’s history as

there are several plaques, each of which represent a significant occasion. Starting with the oldest – a short inscription of a letter received from King George VI, the reigning monarch of the time in 1942. The letter is addressed to the governor, Lieutenant-General Sir William Dobbie, awarding the George Cross (a medal that is awarded only for acts of great heroism or conspicuous courage) to the island of Malta 'to bear witness to the heroism and devotion' of its people. This was a momentous moment for Malta and its people, and the George Cross was embroidered into the national flag to recognise its importance. Following that is an inscribed scroll, with a citation from United States President Franklin D Roosevelt speaking on behalf of the people of the US, about their admiration for Malta’s contribution to democracy; the scroll was presented by the President when he visited Malta in December 1943. A particularly poignant phrase reads, 'Under repeated fire from the skies, Malta stood alone but
unafraid in the center of the sea, one tiny bright flame in the darkness – a beacon of hope for the clearer days which have come.' The scroll was dated December 7, 1943, to mark the second anniversary of the US’s entry into World War II. The original scroll is held at the National Library in Valletta.
earlier, some people felt that, while there was still a Governor-General, who represented the British Monarch, there wasn’t total independence. Therefore, the Maltese Constitution was amended and Malta became a Republic, with Sir Anthony Mamo as its first President thus abolishing the post of Governor-General.
Next is a plaque with a Maltese inscription stating Malta’s Independence and declaring the joy of the Maltese people on this day – 21 st September 1964. Although short and to the point, the event itself is one of great historical importance and marked the end of Malta as a colonised state.
Forward five years, another Maltese plaque was mounted to commemorate Freedom Day on March 1979, in remembrance of the withdrawal of British troops and the Royal Navy from Malta. The inscription speaks about the plight of the workers and their longing to be heard as they joined forces to achieve victory for a (British-) free Malta.
Ten years later, on December 1974, Malta became a republic and the commemorative plaque states: Malta is proud that Parliament with a large majority has declared her a republic; the greatest honour achieved for the first time in the country’s ‘lifespan’. Although Malta had achieved political independence from Britain a decade
The last plaque found on this façade is a relatively recent one dated 2004. The main message of the plaque is a quote from Pope John Paul II to the people of the Maltese Islands during his visit on May 2001. The message encourages Malta to be a metaphorical bridge between Europe and Africa due to its literal geographical position in between the lands. He

encourages the Maltese to continue in their tradition of hospitality in the name of freedom, justice, and peace. The plaque was inaugurated by the late Prof. Guido de Marco, then-President of Malta, on February 2004, on the feast of St Paul’s Shipwreck – a feast close to the hearts of the Maltese people who believe that St Paul converted the island to Roman Catholicism when he was shipwrecked here on his way to Rome to stand trial. This list of plaques is by no means exhaustive and there could very well be other plaques hidden in the narrow streets of Valletta, just out of eye-level sight, so I encourage you to explore the city and walk with your head slightly raised, perhaps you’ll discover another commemorative plaque that will give you further insight into Malta’s history and lifestyle. 01. It’s key to stay positive throughout the race…. the mental aspect during such an event plays a huge role in the outcome

f you want some of the nirvana that veteran swimmer Marian Belsten is describing, you’ve come to the right place; Malta has fantastic conditions for long distance swimming and the Malta-Gozo-Malta swim is one of the most exciting challenges in the Mediterranean.
Forget the Ferry “The best bit about the Malta-Gozo-Malta swim is watching the scenery change as you swim alongside Comino” says Belsten, who won the ‘Over-60 Category’ in Malta’s ‘Birkirkara St Joseph Sports Club (BSJ) Open Water Swimming Championships’ this year. Amy Micallef, an 18-year-old swimmer who has represented Malta internationally and is the Maltese record holder for 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke, agrees. She raced the first part from Malta to Gozo, saying “Even though it is not an easy swim, looking back I consider myself lucky to swim in such a beautiful location.” Roberto Demicoli, a highly experienced long distance swimmer and triathlete who has participated in the European Masters, was another competitor this year. He enjoyed, “The sense of liberty; everything depends on yourself since it’s a solitary sport. The ocean offers so much unpredictability that you never know what can happen, unlike in other sports. Open water is simply an adventure.” The famous swim is seriously gruelling, however. Micallef says, “The last part of the swim is the most challenging, after passing Comino; this stretch seems never-ending and it can be demotivating.” Demicoli says the challenge for him is to keep up the pace over the long distance. He adds, “You also have natural forces such as winds, currents and jellyfish against you. And you need to establish a straight route towards the finish line so you don’t add more much distance to race.” Asked for their winning tips, both women talk about the importance of good technique for the race; “The better your swim technique, the easier it will be”, says Belsten. Demicoli, meanwhile, says, “Besides doing long distance pool training, you need to swim in the open water to get more accustomed to the forces of nature.” And all agree that the mental aspect is critical. “It’s key to stay positive throughout the race…. the mental aspect during such an event plays a huge role in the outcome”, says Micallef.
66
Amateur Options If you’re not up for swimming the channel (and for that, you would need a support boat and plenty of forward planning), there are some gorgeous swims that amateurs can try, as long as they take adequate precautions. “We are very lucky as Malta’s shoreline has so much to offer”, says Micallef. “There is a wide range of places to swim in the sea and the cleanliness of the ocean surrounding our beautiful islands makes any challenge inviting.” The warm water doesn’t hurt either. Belsten’s favourite swims include, “Xlendi to Dwejra, Buġibba to Qawra and Qui si Sana to St. Julian's”, but she says that any of the coastal waters are fair game as long as, “you can get onto back to shore if necessary”. If you don’t want to venture that far, try swimming out to the safety lines at Għajn Tuffieħa; it’s the perfect antidote to a stressful work day and the view back to shore is divine, especially at sunset. Open water swimming does require some basic attention to safety, however. Belsten suggests wearing a brightly-coloured swimming cap so that you are visible, swimming with others if possible (but not allowing them to push you past your limits), wearing plenty of sunscreen and watching out for jellyfish. Micallef adds, “Make sure someone knows your whereabouts and do take a floating device if swimming alone. Also check the wind beforehand. We are lucky as Malta is small and if one side of the island is rough, the other side is usually be good for swimming.” She adds, “there are not so many currents, although it is still good to know which areas offer challenging routes.”
SPORTS
(Just a word of warning however. The sea can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers and currents can occasionally pull people out of their depth. Drownings and near drownings happen on the islands annually. Speak to a local before you swim; if in doubt, don’t go out. The Maltese have a saying - Agħtini xortija u itfagħni l-baħar - Give me the luck and throw me to sea; make sure you’re not the one needing the luck.)
Clear Water Ahead The future of long distance swimming in Malta is bright according to Micallef, because of the weather. “The Maltese islands offer the best sea to train in all year round," she says. “For those swimming in winter, the water temperature only drops to 14°C, so one can either put on a wet suit or take the challenge and swim in a normal swimsuit.” She sees the islands continuing to attract swimmers at an international level. “Malta can be the home base for distance open water swimmers and who knows maybe a contender for a European or World championship venue?” And if you do want to throw your swimming hat into the ring and compete in the Malta Gozo Channel Race, to qualify, you need to take part in two 2K races in the BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships, held between June and August, plus one 4K race. Foreigners can supply a letter of recommendation from a coach instead. For full details, visit www.bkarastjoseph.com. Start training now and you could be at the starting line in August next year!

Tradition
Novembru tal- Mejtin u ta’ San Martin November is the month of All Souls and the feast of St. Martin WORDS BY Antoine Spiteri 01
N
ovember kicks off with the day dedicated to All the Souls, the day of the dead. On the second of November families go in droves to the Addolorata cemetery – the main cemetery of the island built in elegant neo-gothic style – and the scores of little, humbler paces of burial located on the outskirts of most towns and villages, to visit the graves of their dear departed. Gravestones are spruced up and the florists struggle to keep up with demand. Inevitably, as with every other religious occasion whether festive or sober, a special sweet is baked to “celebrate” this time . Rather macabrely this sweet comes in the shape of a dog’s bone. They are quite delicious, made of crumbly biscuit with an almond paste filling and white sugar glazing. Many confectioners' windows windows display trays of bones with a carton sign calling, “Għadam tal– Mejtin”, dead men’s bones. A rather happier occasion is the feast
of San Martin, held in the old, country village of Baħrija not far from Mdina. A small procession winds its way around the village streets and an open air fete is held for the occasion and is especially sought after for the turkey auctions which local farmers hold to raise funds for the local church. San Martin is a very traditional feast steeped in Malta’s history and celebrated throughout the island especially by children. The Borża ta’ San Martin is a colourful bag filled with nuts, dried figs, oranges and tangerines and handed out to little ones who express their happiness by chanting the age old song, “ġewż, lewż, qastan, tin kemm inħobbu lil San Martin” – “walnuts, almonds, chestnuts and figs we all so love Saint Martin.” Special festive tarts using these delicious ingredients are also baked for the occasion, and Gululu the Maltese restaurant in St. Julian’s offers this “Torta ta’ San Martin” throughout the month of November.

TRADITION
03
Feasts and rituals apart, November is typically a calm month when the weather is still pleasant – especially the Sajf ta’ San Martin, the Indian summer around the feast day – and good for swimming, as well as for taking long country walks along the long high cliff line on the south coast of the island. The summer fruit and vegetables are gone now yet others step in to take their place. Pomegranates are in season and the first oranges and tangerines make their appearance. Vegetables like qarabagħali - round courgettes – are plentiful too and when large they are hollowed and stuffed with a delicious mince filling and cooked slowly until tender. This popular dish is another speciality of Gululu.

ART
01
The hidden gem of Valletta WORDS BY Giulia Privitelli
H
ave you ever wondered what a racing horse must feel when the race has been done and won, only for the jockey to receive the prize? Well, the internationallyrenown modern abstract artist, Victor Pasmore (1908-1998) has. And such were his words when, in a conversation with leading Maltese contemporary architect, Richard England, Pasmore confessed his poignancy at seeing his works sold off at incredible prices, his achievements and creations passed on to another owner, while having to contend himself with
well intended praises, no doubt, and a pat on the back. Yet, Pasmore was never truly about the end result, the finished product. His philosophy of art was one which allowed him continuous development, experimentation and growth – an endless, at times cyclical, process in search of the image, rather than a representation of it. Pasmore, the tireless explorer, was the kind of person who would look at a scribble, tilt his head and with gleaming seriousness explain
73
ART
that “what mattered initially was not what our scribble would represent, but what it might become.” No wonder students loved him. But yes, even in the art-world, a driven artist is, first and foremost, an optimist. And Pasmore had to have plenty of optimism, especially when, in 1949, he decided to shock everyone by breaking off completely with the past and enter into the hazy, uncertain world of abstraction. As it turn out, this hazy, uncertain world was Pasmore’s playing field of choice, which kept him occupied for the rest of his life – a field where he was free to roam, observe and experiment with painting, printing, reliefs, constructions, architecture and even literature, in an unwavering effort to liberate the image and create something completely independent of everything else. It was also, in this energetic and prolific phase of his career that, following a chance encounter during the Venice Biennale of 1960, Victor Pasmore together with his wife, Wendy, paid a
02
visit to the island of Malta. Looking out of the plane window while descending onto the island, Pasmore couldn’t help noticing 'the white, cubist-like houses,' as he himself described them. And so, from the busy streets and hanging grey sky of London, Pasmore eventually chose one such cubist-like house, in 1966 as their permanent residence - an airy farmhouse, bathed in Mediterranean light, amid the fields of the quaint little village of Gudja. What might have come across to his peers as a suicidal career move, turned out to be an unprecedented and ideal occasion for Pasmore to quench his artistic thirst. Indeed, never in his long artistic career had he been more prolific. A selection of Victor Pasmore’s creations, including drawings, reliefs, acrylic, oil and spray paintings, constructions and composite works, can be viewed in the Victor Pasmore Gallery which is open to the public between Monday and Friday, 11 am-3 pm. Entrance is free of charge and gallery talks are provided daily at 1 pm. The gallery is located just five minutes away from the main Valletta main bus terminus, next door to the annexe of the Central bank of Malta. Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti took over management of the Victor Pasmore Gallery in September 2015, and is generously supported by the Central Bank of Malta. For more information about the gallery, lecture programme, workshops and other related activities, kindly send an email on info@victorpasmoregallery.com or call on +356 2250 3360.

Victor Pasmore was employed as a part-time teacher at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (194243) and as a visiting lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London (1949-1953). This was followed by his appointment as Master of Painting at King’s College Durham University (1954-1961), where he introduced a ground-breaking foundation course in basic form, entitled The Developing Process.

RELIGION 01
Of statues, saints and niches WORDS BY Alfred Bezzina
T
he tradition of setting up niches in streets dates back to the Roman era. In Christian times, images of Christ, Our Lady and Christian Saints, replaced those of Roman Gods. These niches were often decorated and lit, thus paying homage to the image within, as well as providing some illumination during the night. The streets of Malta and Gozo, are full of shrines, statues, or niches, dedicated to Our Lady and to different saints. They are often found at the corners of buildings. When Valletta was being built in 1569, Grandmaster Pietro del Monte decreed that corner houses had to display some architectural ornamentation such as a statue, a niche, or a coat of arms. The niches and statues play an important part in the religious and social tradition of the people of these islands. We can see them where least expected, in Valletta and every town and village of our islands. All through the ages men used statues to give a more humane aspect to the local environment. In our Maltese society, our religion gave us the statues and our streets provided us with the space where to put them, that is in the corner of building blocks and other similar locations. Many hold that this tradition of showing devotion to saints 01. The Carmelite Convent and medieval statue of Jesus in Mdina

represented by means of statues and niches go back at least to the times of the Romans, who used to erect niches and put up statues, of their own gods in the villages and countryside as a method of protection. Later on, the Christian missionaries saw fit to keep this tradition alive but changed the images to those belonging to Christianity. Some of these statues and niches have lamps which are lit regularly and some come with flower vases and pots. For a long time the only street lightning was that provided by the lamps lit in front of these statues and niches. They are meant to inspire devotion in passersby. It is not so common in these secular times, but you will still see the odd person making
the sign of the cross as they pass one of these reminders of our Christian faith. It is more likely that a silent prayer is said. Many are dedicated to Our Lady as there has always been a strong Marian devotion on these islands. Some statues are made by amateurs, mostly in stone. They come in varying degrees of sophistication. A few are made of wood or papier mache. Oil-lamps in front of these niches and statues were lit every day, perhaps by the family responsible for them – or a parish. A few niches are lit by electric bulbs. Some were set up in fulfillment of a vow to a particular saint or in thanksgiving for graces received.
In Gozo’s capital, Victoria, you will see quite a number of statues in niches or standing on a pillar and you can be certain that each has its own history. As part of its restoration programme to secure landmarks for the nation, Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta’s national trust, has also been restoring statues in Valletta. One is the statue of St James in St Christopher Street, corner with Merchants Street and another is that of St Roque on the corner between St Ursula and St Christopher streets. Their restoration was sponsored by the Central Bank. St James of Compostela vowed that, alone and barefoot, he would travel to the Holy Land and stand by the tomb of

the Saviour in Palestine. He kept his vow and on his eastward journey he placed upon his hat a little black cockle shell, the sign of the sea and the suggestion of water in the desert. On his return from the tomb he wore a little white cockle shell, a symbol of purification. Since that time the shell has been the piligrim’s sign. This sign was used by the Spanish builders in their decoration.
The haliography of St Roque has it that his parents died in 1315 when he was 20, and he set out as a mendicant preacher. He found himself in Italy during an outbreak of the plague and he helped care for those struck down. He became ill himself and was cast out and cared for by a dog who licked his wounds and brought him a loaf of bread every day.
It was St Roque who interceded with God on behalf of plague victims. In this statue he is depicted as a piligrim, too, wearing a hat, and carrying a staff and a cockle-shell. His companion is a dog, carrying a bun in its mouth.
Do look out for the unique and varied statues whether in a town or village in Malta or Gozo. They make a fascinating study and are an enduring symbol of Malta’s deeprooted Christian heritage which must be preserved.

Climb every mountain David Gladwish has done what many of us have only dreamed about. He quit his job to travel and seek adventure. This brave adventurer tells Veronica Stivala why he thinks we should all climb a mountain at least once in our lives PHOTOS BY David Gladwish
ow many of us have said we’d like to quit our jobs and go travelling for the rest of our lives? For the majority of us, this is where the statement starts and ends as we quickly dispel the dream. But for one brave soul, the dream has become a reality.
H
of full-time employment at the age of 21, my training and health took a back seat, and with it my hobbies and only form of stress release.” By the time he was 23, he was overweight and mentally unchallenged from monotonous work. He was frustrated and unhappy – “I needed a change,” he recalls.
Despite having a good job, with a good salary, a steady position, friendly co-workers and more fresh fruit in the kitchen every morning than he knew what to do with, David Gladwish found himself miserable. So, finally, one day, he gave in to his inner country boy that had been trapped within for so long. Having written his letter of resignation, he found himself counting the minutes till the end of his last shift.
Entirely by chance, his twin brother came across a charismatic fellow by the name of Keith Marshall and his plan to set up an expedition to climb Africa’s highest peak: Mount Kilimanjaro. David remembers clearly how, on dropping into Marshall’s next meeting to see what it was all about, it took him all of five minutes to make up his mind. “I was going to climb a big mountain, and for the first time in years, I was excited again.”
“I wanted to travel, I wanted to explore and I wanted adventure, which for the past six years, has been my greatest passion,” he says passionately.
In addition to remaining one of his most treasured memories, his journey to and up Kilimanjaro marked a huge turning point in his life for many reasons: “When I returned home from Africa I began to re-evaluate my life and my priorities – health, happiness, passions. I began to hit the gym and made sustainable changes to my eating habits, going on to lose 20kg in a matter of months,” he reminisces. And there’s more;
As a teen, Gladwish had always been active lad. He played basketball, keenly studied martial arts and cycled practically everywhere. But, as he puts it: “upon delving into the world

he started studying fitness with a leading fitness instructor school. “Confidence flooded back to me and I eagerly started planning more trips abroad,” he muses. David found a way of turning his hobby into his business – taking groups on adventurous travels, guiding and training them with his expertise. In 2011 he flew to China with one of his oldest friends and a dozen English strangers to spend a week trekking at the Great Wall of China. “I got to hug a baby panda, came back with the unexpected discovery that I was quite good at climbing lots of steps and a dozen new friends,” he recalls. In 2012 he flew to Morocco to climb Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa, but had to stop half way due to illness. He came back with an important lesson in self-discipline and patience. anywhere, he vowed he would be back. In 2013 he spent three weeks in the Andes in Argentina, hitting the 5,000m altitude mark again twice. “I have never felt so small, and in turn, my problems so insignificant – the mighty range was a humbling experience,” he asserts. Gladwish went on to go on some grand expeditions, namely three to Morocco, summiting Mount Toubkal on all occasions. In between mountains, he navigated 580 km on foot across Ireland with two great friends, becoming the first team to walk across Ireland from coast to coast along this route. Snowshoeing in the Dolomites and a canoeing expedition on a wild and wonderful Swedish river sealed off a wonderful year, bursting with memories he will “treasure for a lifetime”. While David does love walking alone, he confides he has come to realise “there are only so many feelings you can experience by yourself ”. He notes how “sharing memorable moments with close friends or loved ones throughout a journey, be it ups,

downs, the start or end of a trip is a feeling hard to describe, and even harder to beat”. This adventurer believes everyone should climb a mountain or walk across a country at least once. “My climbs and the walk across Ireland remain my most treasured memories and I intend to add many more to that list. I have yet to meet a single person who's regretted doing either,” he says. So what’s next for this adrenaline seeker? A walk across a country! That’s across the Netherlands, from the German border to the coast. And in January he is taking another team up Toubkal in what promises to be their whitest and coldest trip to date. Unsurprisingly, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Gladwish’s 2017, which, he says, will undoubtedly require at least one other decent sized mountain and another country to stroll across. “So many things to do,” he sighs, but grinningly adds: “It's hard to decide which to opt for. The stresses of a traveler!”

REMOTE GAMING
O
ver the years, Malta has garnered a sterling status as a European hub for remote gaming, and today is considered a wellregulated and reputable European jurisdiction within the industry. In addition, Malta’s favourable tax regimes and attractive license costs make our islands a destination of choice amongst several of the largest gaming operators in the industry.
Malta: A remote gaming destination
Driven by the on-going commitment to promote responsible gaming, and ensure the protection of the player, Malta’s legislation has been drafted with both players and operator interests in mind. During their stay, licensees have discovered that a Maltese license adds value to their brand, allowing them to gain respect from their players. In line with Malta’s aim to reassert its positioning at the forefront of remote gaming jurisdictions, the National
Strategy on Digital Gaming came into existence in 2012. This document reestablishes Malta’s strategic focus, and offers a variety of opportunities to Maltese companies focusing on remote gaming initiatives. Key benefits include financing, tax-credits, as well as cofinancing possibilities. Over the years, the industry has reshaped itself and is now poised to take on the next level. November welcomes several delegates, operators, suppliers and affiliates to our shores to engage in some of the largest gaming events of the year that include the Battle of Malta poker tournament, and the SiGMA, and MiGS ’16 conferences amongst others. If you happen to be visiting our Islands for any of the above reasons, we welcome you and invite you to peruse through our catalogue of service providers and operators in order to get a head start with regards to look out for during your stay here.

CARTOGRAPHY
Malta’s Exceptional Cartographical History
WORDS BY Rod Lyon
01
T
here are two major reasons why antique maps of Malta are more numerous and more attractive than those of other Mediterranean islands. In 1530 Malta was gifted by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to the Knights of St John. The islands were given to them as their new home after they had been allowed to leave Rhodes following defeat by the Turkish Emperor Suleiman The Magnificent, at that time the supreme commander of the Mediterranean basin. Prior to this, interest in Malta was negligible and often centered around the story of St. Paul's shipwreck on the islands, something that is depicted on Lafreri maps from Rome ca 1550.
The second season is due to the fact that maps of the islands had a lot of space around them which cartographers filled with decorative views and insertions of ships, battles, sea monsters and other figments of their imaginations. The arrival of the Knights renewed interest in the Maltese Islands and focused European curiosity and later world attention on this small group of islands which the Knights described as a 'sterile and barren land' with an estimated population of only 6,000 inhabitants. Gradually the topography of Malta began to appear in printed form. The earliest known representation from the Knights was a small descriptive booklet with a map published in 1536 in Lyon (France) by a French Knight, Abbe Jean Quintin.
That first image was followed by many others and the fact that the Knights (often wealthy nobles) came from all the major European countries meant that maps appeared in France, Italy, Spain, England, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and in other countries. The very earliest maps - pre 1565 are often inaccurate and do not, of course, include Malta's capital Valletta, which was built after the siege. In 1565 the famous Great Siege of Malta, forged by a large Turkish invasion force, resulted in the publication of many maps as a way of informing the world about the progress of the invasion, which began in May 1565 and ended in September 1565. Dr Albert Ganado, the 92 year old President of the Malta Map Society, has

in the subject and publish scholarly works on Malta maps. A number of wellresearched books have been published and the latest covers the "Pre-Siege Maps of Malta" including an early representation of Malta in 1157 by Al Idrisi. The work was sponsored by the Alfred Mizzi Foundation of Malta.
02
published a study of 143 maps of the siege and more have since been discovered. Because of the great interest in old maps of Malta, Dr Ganado, whose collection is housed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta, founded the Malta Map Society in November 2009 to foster interest
From the early days of the Knights, the mapping of Malta continued apace until the arrival of Napoleon in 1798, when French mapping was active. Prior to that, the invasion of Gozo in 1551, when the entire population of Malta's sister island had been taken away to work in slavery or be ransomed, also created cartographical interest in the islands, especially in Italy. The departure of the French in 1800 brought with it a different form of cartography under the British, with
many maps, charts and views being published in London and Malta. Every year unknown maps of the islands are discovered and quite recently the only known Russian map of Malta from 1800 came to light. The map and the book in which it is contained are now being translated for publication in 2016 by the Malta Map Society. Anyone interested in the work of the Malta Map Society may contact the Society’s Secretary, Joseph Schiro on e-mail: joseph.schiro@onvol.net or address: Felicity, Vjal ir-Rihan, San Gwann, SGN9030, Malta. The Malta Map Society is a non-profit organisation. Membership to the society costs ₏25 euro and includes journal registration and entrance to lectures and exhibitions.

Air Malta assists The Malta Community Chest Fund
A
ir Malta will again be assisting The Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF) during the months of November and December. During these months, Air Malta Cabin Crew will be collecting funds on board the airline’s flights towards this cause. The MCCF is an organisation aimed at promoting solidarity among people living in Malta. The Fund, which is chaired by the President of Malta, supports institutions and organisations that provide financial, material and professional support to people experiencing difficulties because of severe chronic or terminal illness, including cancer, disability, poverty, unemployment or lack of resources, without any form of discrimination. Joe Galea, Acting Chief Executive Officer said, “Air Malta is a proud supporter of the MCCF. As an airline we strongly believe in our corporate social responsibility and throughout the years we have assisted thousands of people to travel abroad
for medical treatment. Our aircraft can carry both stretcher cases and incubators for new born babies that require urgent medical treatment abroad. The MCCF works hard during the year to support thousands of people who rely on the generosity of the fund to help families passing through difficult times. We are happy that with the help of our guests we can continue assisting this fund with its commendable initiatives. This campaign forms part of Air Malta's Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives whereby the airline supports organisations that work hard in the Maltese community. As Malta's national carrier, Air Malta is the only airline flying from Malta that fully supports the local community in all possible ways. No other airline operating to Malta provides continued support to voluntary and non-governmental organisations like Air Malta. This initiative is also being supported by Sky Gourmet, the airline's catering provider.

Project Leader, Customer Social Engagement & Innovative Channels PHOTOS BY Domenic Aquilina
How long have you been working with Air Malta? I joined the national airline in January 2014 after 20 years in the private industry. Having worked in telecoms and online technologies, I find the aviation industry extremely interesting and dynamic, it feels awesome to be connecting so many countries and millions of passengers every year. I was engaged to manage the eCommerce function and after a year I was asked to set up a Social Engagement hub and setting the standards for Air Malta’s presence on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and other social sites relevant to our industry. Branding is also a function I recently took over and I feel pride and a certain degree of responsibility in caring for the Air Malta brand, an international icon for Malta and its people.
I plan, co-ordinate and execute resulting in the regular posts you see on the social sites. These require a lot of thought and dedication in delivering the right message to our varied audiences, at the right time of the day. My job allows me to interact with colleagues in different areas within the airline as I assist our guests or put together surprises for them to create unique experiences throughout the entire journey. The few hours I manage to be offline it’s work at the office overseeing our marketing campaigns that extend to the classical media.
Three words that describe your job? Creative, engaging and demanding. Managing social sites might sound like a fun and frivolous job, but in reality there is a lot going on behind the scenes. I am the one always online to engage with customers, guests and followers on a daily basis, practically 24x7. Then there’s the content which
4. Do you have any hobbies? Oh I do, I love photography and healthy cooking, and wish I had more time to experiment with vegan recipes. I also love sculpting and drawing, a talent inherited from my late dad and artist Joseph Casha, who was a versatile sculptor and painter. Most of my free time is taken by Snoopy though, a very playful beagle I adopted
3. What is the biggest challenge of your job? Being a live environment, time is key to being successful. Reacting to customers’ comments and chat questions in an efficient manner is essential, especially when considering that flights are intangible and perishable products.
soon after I joined Air Malta. He truly filled my home and life! 5. Which is your favourite destination and why? I am no globe-trotter. To date Rome is the city I have visited most times, and I keep going back! Apart from the fact that it’s only a one hour flight away from our Island, the Italian capital is the heart of history, art, culture and gastronomy – all in one cosy city! I feel it is my home away from home, it gives me a sense of well-being which I just love. Thanks to my job at Air Malta I am having more opportunities of visiting new places and discovering new cultures. 6. What are your favourite spots or tips for anyone visiting Malta? I think very few countries can boast the impressive historical and architectural sites which the Maltese Islands have to offer, like the Neolithic temples, the fortifications around Valletta, the Three Cities together with the Silent City of Mdina and the Cittadella in Gozo. I am always blown away by the grandeur of these buildings and today that most sites have been lovingly restored with the support of EU funding, we can appreciate their bold beauty even more. This is what makes our Archipelago simply unique.
Do you wish to celebrate a special occasion on board and willing to allow us to share it with our social followers? We would be delighted to help you make your flight experience unforgettable! Send us an email at socialmedia.airmalta@airmalta.com and we will be in touch.

Use of Portable Electronic Devices on board Transmitting Portable Electronic Dev ices (PEDs)
Non-T r a nsmit ting Porta ble Electronic Dev ices (PEDs)
L aptops and notebooks
Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.
A re there times when I cannot use my electronic devices?
C an I use headphones?
Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I should inform the cabin crew when …
… a passenger notices that his/her device is overheating. In such a case, the Personal Electronic Device must be switched off immediately and a member of the crew informed.
If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
