From the CEO... Welcome to Malta!

Hello And Welcome on board. Thank you for choosing Air Malta! With an average temperature of 21 degrees, sea temperatures topping 24 degrees and 8 hours of sunshine daily, October is one of the best months to visit the islands. Summer in Malta is not yet over. In this edition of our inflight magazine Air Malta pays tribute to the veteran Maltese businessman, Albert Mizzi, the airline’s longest lasting Chairman for 19 years who recently passed away. Other articles feature the appiontment of the airline as the offical carrier of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) being held in Malta next month, and our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative to help the local Breast Cancer support group to collect funds this month. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease across the world. At the end of this month we commence our winter schedule to/from 20 international airports. We have revised our fare structure with lower lead-in fares to attract more short-break visitors wishing to visit us during our balmy winters. Check out our website www.airmalta.com for the latest offers. We are working to continuously improve our services and expect to announce improvements to our website. Upgrades will include a mobile friendly site and improvements to the online/mobile check-in platforms. Customer satisfaction is of utmost importance for us. We love to hear your feedback and what we could do better. Visit www.airmalta.com/wearelistening to answer a few short questions and you can get 10% off your next flight.

For more information visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive offers directly in your inbox. Wherever you are flying with us I hope you have a Great Flight! Philip Micallef, CEO Air Malta

From the Editor… October brings about winds of change, from shorter hours during the day to lower temperatures, we silently wish the blazing summer a goodbye and herald in the new season. Nevertheless, Malta is blessed with an ‘extended summer period’ that will generally run all the way through to December – so if you’re visiting on holiday, or business for that matter, you’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about; there is still lots of sunshine around. As for local travellers, you know exactly what I’m talking about – we’re still significantly far away from sporting coats and boots, even though that isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. We welcome you to this month’s issue of Bizzilla that tackles various aspects of our idyllic archipelago – from myths of spectres and ghosts, to unofficial local pass times such as our undeniable coffee culture, all the way to country walks off the beaten path – we’ve got it all under control. If on the other hand you happen to be visiting our shores to take part in the European Poker Tournament, that is literally so exciting – may I be the first one to wish you the very best of luck. As always, please feel free to get in touch – my inbox is always open. Until next month!

Dana

POKER

MELA! WORLD’S RICHEST POKER TOUR HEADS TO MALTA Thousands of the world’s top poker players will be heading to Malta this month to take part in one of the biggest poker events on the planet.

t

EUROPEAN POKER TOUR FACT BOX:

The EPT Malta Poker Festival, which runs between October 20-31, is the second event of Season 12 of the European Poker Tour and follows a record-breaking festival in Barcelona in August, when a staggering 5,700 players took part, making it the biggest event the tour has ever held.

• Now in its 12th season, the EPT has already paid out over €770 million in player prize money and hosted events in 20+ countries across Europe

he PokerStars.com European Poker Tour (EPT), which made its Malta debut last March, is returning to the island with a massive 76-strong schedule of tournaments at the Portomaso Casino in St Julian’s.

Last season’s EPT Malta debut saw nearly 2,500 players from 73 countries take part in 77 different tournaments. Portomaso Casino notched up record attendances nearly every day of the event, with numbers also boosted by dozens of cash game tables operating round the clock. But it wasn’t just poker players who had a thrilling time in Malta; families, friends and media from all over the world enjoyed the chance to explore the island and enjoy one of the Mediterranean’s most popular tourist destinations.

• Launched in 2004, the European Poker Tour (EPT) is now the world’s richest and most popular poker tour, attracting thousands of players every year and followed by fans worldwide via TV and live internet broadcasts.

• Malta is the smallest European country the EPT has ever visited but was host to one of the biggest events. • The EPT also hosts the world’s biggest ten-day poker festival: the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas held every January. • Season 12 of the EPT will visit at least six destinations. As well as the record-breaking EPT Barcelona Festival in August and EPT Malta this month, the EPT will go to Prague in December, the Bahamas in January, Dublin in February and Monaco for the EPT Grand Final (April 25-May 6). • The EPT is owned by Nasdaq-listed Amaya Inc which hosts some 800 live poker events around the world every year as well as running the two largest online poker sites on the planet.

POKER

around the world to help establish sensible global regulation. Our office in Sliema, the headquarters for PokerStars.eu and FullTilt. eu, already employs over 150 people, and is growing all the time.

Poker is a sport which has a distinctly social angle. Players themselves love to visit new destinations and relish the chance to explore new cultures and enjoy new experiences. 'Poker Tourism' has become a global phenomenon, experiencing rapid growth in tandem with the extraordinary growth of poker itself. The European Poker Tour has long been associated with premium tourist destinations – from beautiful Prague to lively Barcelona, from bustling London to glamorous Monte Carlo. Now the EPT is putting Malta firmly on the map as a 'must visit' destination for players. Recent estimates show that hosting a European Poker Tour festival injects an additional €5 - 10 million in to the local economy. Poker players, their families and friends – not to mention hundreds of media and tournament staff - all make plentiful use of local facilities. Hotels, restaurants, bars, night clubs, shops and leisure outlets all benefit from the massive influx of

visitors during what is historically an 'offseason' period of the year. Visitors to Malta are often amazed to discover that not only is the island already home to a thriving poker community but it already serves as the European headquarters for online poker brands, PokerStars and Full Tilt, which form part of the leading Nasdaq-listed gaming company Amaya Inc. Amaya hosts some 800 live events around the world every year as well as running the two largest online poker sites on the planet. Michael Holmberg, Amaya’s General Manager in Malta said: “Amaya Inc brands collectively form the largest poker business in the world with over 90 million users worldwide, comprising online poker games and tournaments, live poker competitions and poker programming for TV and online audiences. We hold more online poker licenses than any other e-gaming company and work closely with regulators

For further information, please see http://www.ept.com/

“Hosting a European Poker Tour event in Malta gives us a chance to welcome our customers to our adopted home, as well as show off this beautiful island to a new and enthusiastic audience. Media coverage also helps spread the word still further, helping to bring long-term tourism benefits from the tour’s presence. The feedback last season was extremely enthusiastic – players and media loved the island and it proved that Malta is a world-class location for major poker events.” This season’s EPT Malta Poker Festival, co-hosted with the Italian Poker Tour and Pagano Events, will again run in partnership with VisitMalta.com and Hilton Malta, and is authorised by the Malta Gaming Authority. Staff from the local PokerStars office will also be contributing to the festival, not only by lending a hand at the event but also competing in the numerous side events. The festival will be broadcast live via the web on pokerstars.tv and multiple other sites and will also be extensively covered by media from around the world.

Charmingly Local Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, is a unique tasting bitter sweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs Kinnie is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer and goes well with a number of alcoholic drinks and a variety of cocktails. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie Malta’s own favourite soft drink, loved by the local population and tourists alike ever since it was launched locally in 1952. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zerocalorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced. Other variants in the Kinnie portfolio today include Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an added touch of orange flavour, and, more recently, Kinnie Vita, a mid-calorie beverage which uses only natural sweeteners and contains just half the sugar and calories of a regular soft drink.

Welcome to Malta Simonds Farsons Cisk is today synonymous with a beer brewing tradition rooted in quality. At the very base of this tradition are its longestablished skills of selecting nature’s best ingredients. The finest imported malt and selected hops are coupled with the adoption of the best brewing methods and expertise of skilled and dedicated brew masters who give constant attention to detail to ensure that a high standard of quality is maintained at every step in the brewing process. Every single batch of their beer is thoroughly tested and tasted. Over the years since 1928, this dedication has consistently contributed to creating the award-winning brews, that so many have grown to appreciate time after time. Cisk Lager is a golden-coloured, bottomfermented lager with a distinctive and well-balanced character. Its rich hop aroma and pleasant bitterness, combined with a mild astringency, make it an outstanding thirstquencher. Alcohol content is 4.2%. Today Cisk Lager has developed and progressed considerably since its launch in 1928 and the range also includes Cisk Export Premium Lager – a smooth, well balanced and exceptional beer with a 5% alcohol content, Cisk Excel – a low carbohydrate beer, Cisk Chill – a lemon flavoured and a berry flavoured lager, and Cisk XS – an outstanding extra-strong premium lager with a 9% alcohol content. This newly-launched index uses unprecedented, objective and scientific methodology to systematically benchmark seven of the most relevant citizenship-by-investment programmes available today. “The Malta IIP is widely considered to be the world’s most advanced and most exclusive citizenship-by-investment programme. Its position in the GCPI, based on solid research, endorses this,” says Christian H. Kalin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, the global leaders in residence and citizenship planning.

Program 2015 Report. Produced by Henley & Partners, in association with leading names in the investment migration industry, the report places Malta in first place for citizenship-byinvestment, above Cyprus, Austria, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, and Dominica.

Kalin explains that Malta’s ranking as the best is bolstered by the fact that more than €1 billion has been committed to the island nation through the IIP, which has received more than 750 applications since its launch in early 2014. “This edges the world’s top citizenship-byinvestment programme closer to its cap of 1,800 applications,” he adds.

The seven programs were ranked according to Reputation, Quality of Life, Visa Free Access, Processing Time, Compliance, Investment Requirements, Residence Requirements, Relocation Flexibility, Physical Visits Required and Transparency.

The outcome of the GCPI is included in the Global Residence and Citizenship

The IIP is aimed at ultra-high net worth individuals and families worldwide and is marketed internationally by Henley & Partners for the Government of Malta. “Our firm understands the finest

details of the IIP because we designed and created it with the Government of Malta,” continues Kalin. Applicants for citizenship are required to invest at least €350,000 in a property for at least five years, or rent an immovable property for a minimum €16,000 a year over the same time period. They must also contribute €650,000 to Malta’s National Development and Social Fund, and fulfil other investments and obligations. Kalin states that real estate in Malta has shown steady growth, averaging 5% per annum over the past few years. “The property market is buoyant with good quality property being in high demand and short supply, so prices are increasing. All the current signs suggest that property investment in Malta will continue to provide a return of around 5% per annum over the coming years.” Kalin adds: “The level of interest remains strong and we are pleased to see that many of the early applicants are now starting to make ancillary investments, outside of the IIP, within the country. This will lead to further increased inward investment and the future creation of employment in Malta.”

COFFEE CULTURE

Dolce far niente: Cafés in Malta Marie Benoît takes a cursory look at café culture in Malta.

T

he Caffé Greco in the elegant Via Condotti in Rome was once a favourite haunt of Goethe, Byron and Liszt. But Trotsky deserted the Café Central in Vienna saying it was not revolutionary enough for him. The Parisian café became the archetypal meeting place for the beautiful and brilliant. Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and lesser existentialists like Juliette Greco met regularly at Les Deux Magots and the Café de Flore on the Boulevard St Germaine des Prés in Paris.

It was at the Café Mozart in Vienna that Graham Greene set one of the most famous scenes of The Third Man. Giuseppe de Lampedusa wrote some of his best pages of Il Gattopardo at a café table in the heart of Palermo. There you can still go and have an aperitivo or an espresso. In Puccino’s La Bohème the Bohemians frequented the Café Momus which was located in the silent and gloomy Rue des Prêtres Saint-Germain Auxerrois. The Momus was also patronized by Baudelaire and Gerard de Nerval. And no doubt many a poet manqué agonised there over his stanzas and quatrains. It was also in a café that Puccini quarrelled with Leoncavallo of I Pagliacci fame. Each threatened the other that his next opera was to be called La Bohème. Leoncavallo claimed that the title was originally his idea. Puccini won the race and got it on the stage first. Malta, too, has its cafés and, inevitably, its café and Nescafé society. In Valletta, and everywhere else, they are

spilling out on to pavements together with restaurants, especially during the summer months. The Caffé Cordina on Republic Street continues to be the main exhibit with its frescoes and paintings inside; outside its windows display the season’s delicacies. Charles Grech Café and Cocktail Bar at the beginning of Republic Street, was founded in 1881 by Charles Grech, who, after a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, decided to settle in his homeland. Originally it had three areas: a high class tobacconist shop, an exclusive ‘sampling bar’ which, for many years, was patronised by the top people on the island and senior officers of the Armed

playing among everybody’s legs. Mothers murmuring endearing baby words to their little ones or screaming at them as if they are about to throttle them. If you sit and watch for long enough you will recognise the newly-born flirtation or the tired old liaison.

The area around St John’s Co-Cathedral is full of cafés and, in the piazza in front of Cordina, there are more cafés. There is the long established Café Prego in the bowels of South Street. Here there are no magnificent fares displayed but it is discreet and the ideal place for conducting business or a tête a tête.

Some are discussing a fine point of politics, or the personality of a common friend or adversary. Both are speaking at the same time. People are eating cheesecakes as if they have just broken loose from some Great Siege. Who can blame them? They must be Malta’s most delicious and cheapest snack. Children are hoovering through enormous icecreams and dribbling on their Sunday best as if there will never be another occasion for such gluttony.

The décor of Café Jubilee on St Lucia Street gives the impression that it has been in operation for decades. The owners have managed to replicate, to the minutest detail, décor usually associated with the 1920s and 1930s in Western Europe. There is also Angelica on Archbishop Street, which looks delicious, and many other cafés for you to discover. The latest comers to open cafés and restaurants are the Sicilians and Italians. Dolce Peccati and Stretto on St John’s Street seem to be particularly popular.

01. Café Cordina, Republic Street Valletta 02. St John’s Co-Cathedral and cafés

In most cafés, tables are crowded with customers who watch the strollers and shoppers going back and forth. There are the tourists, distinguishable from their various shades of sun-pink and their more advanced state of undress. There are housewives carrying heavy shopping bags, swarms of pretty girls in cut-off jeans or mini skirts. Against this ever-changing background you will find the habitués. Sometimes the children are there

The tables are squashed together and most cafés have dispensed with tablecloths. This, after all, is the age of plastic. If you choose a café which is on the main road, in Sliema for example, the traffic dusts your coffee, beer, ice-cream or lemonade with a dainty film of lead or, if they happen to be building nearby, with limestone dust. But this is not Edwina Currie country. This sort of thing has never been known to kill anyone. The waiters are either harassed or friendly, middle-aged or young. Some mingle professionalism with courtesy or are off-hand. There are foreigners amongst them whose English cannot be understood. There are those who make you feel as if nothing is too much trouble. Others seem to resent your being there at all. They’ve seen it all before and have become blasé. They rarely get an

30

order wrong. They clean your table with the sweeping gestures of a conductor directing an allegro con brio composition. Sometimes it is an allegro ma non troppo. And, when things quieten down, an adagio cantabile. Much depends on what time of day it is. And which day of the week. Indeed which month.

COFFEE CULTURE

indeed ropes - if necessary. The young are looking for a true love or a new love and some might even be making history.

In cafés you may be able to identify gurus and sacred cows diplomaed to the eyeballs, grazing and plotting. There are adulterers, businessmen, lovers hanging around on the pavement and inside or out, posing, philosophising, planning. The cafés create an ambience for chit-chat and the ceremonial sipping of coffee, tea or cold beer.

The show can be so engrossing that many people spend much of their lives just looking at it. The tables, strategically placed, are as conventional as boxes at the theatre. You can spend an afternoon, a day, a year watching thousands of characters and hundreds of sub-plots developing. Some spend a lifetime looking at others love and live. Watching others and making it quite clear that you are doing so is not considered illmannered. It is the Mediterranean way of life.

Those two over there are entangled in some sordid little liaison, dangerous or otherwise. The ones behind are on the brink of a passionate love affair – or divorce. A group is jumping to conclusions, probably, the only exercise they get. Some are constructing points of law, assassinating characters, jockeying for power, pulling strings – or

And the food, ah! the food. You only have to look at the Maltese around you to know at once that the food is irresistible. The cafés, as opposed to the bars and kiosks, have a bewildering array of pastries and mouth-watering pasti. These cakes are made with cream, almonds, chocolate, millefeuilles. They have whirls and twirls

and curls and are displayed colourfully, as if pouring out of a cornucopia. The ice-creams come in every shade. You can have a simple blob or two, or a confection which will satisfy even the most demanding of gourmands. If it is Sunday or a feast day, the bells clang and the fireworks hiss and explode, drowning every other sound. It is our way of wishing Happy Birthday to someone in heaven. Lovers sometimes have to whisper ‘I love you!’ to each other in the tones of a mother calling her child from a sixth-storey window. But the mood is dolce far niente. Motorcycles, trucks, cars and vans go by with roaring engines. Some are frantically trying to park. Others are holding up the traffic and arranging some rendezvous or making a business deal. The cafés of Malta are for sexologists, geologists, palaentologists, but above all sociologists, psychologists and escapologists.

Birgufest Birgu (Vittoriosa) Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa), is one of Malta's oldest and most historic cities, and has now also become an annual national event. From inception the aim was to highlight Birgu's historic and architectural beauty and the Birgu by Candlelight, now incorporated in Birgufest, was set up to highlight this in a romantic manner. The streets are lit up with a gentle glow by thousands of candles of all kinds. However, Birgufest has developed into a larger event with a wider scope, offering numerous activities throughout the festival. The historic re-enactments, extended and cheaper museum entrances, and the opening up to the public of other venues of interest including churches, highlight the immense historic value of this city. www.birgu.gov.mt

BRANDS

KINNIE MALTA Over the past 60 years, Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, has evolved to become one of Malta’s leading and much loved brands. Launched in 1952 by Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, Kinnie, is a unique tasting bittersweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs.

Ever since Kinnie was launched in 1952, Simonds Farsons Cisk has stayed faithful to Kinnie’s original recipe, which remains a closely guarded secret. Over the years there have been various attempts by others aiming to replicate Kinnie’s deliciously unique taste, original flavour and golden amber colour. Nothwithstanding, Kinnie remains a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. Over the years, Kinnie has evolved into a national brand that continues to be enjoyed and shared by generations of consumers of all ages, and has managed to retain its appeal and premium positioning as Malta’s very own soft drink. While Kinnie’s packaging designs have consistently evolved with the times, its successful integration into the Maltese family fabric is a testament to its distinctive taste and flavour, which have remained unchanged over the years. Kinnie is an excellent thirst quencher, particularly in the hotter summer months. It is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer and goes well with a number of alcoholic drinks and a variety of cocktails. Since 1952 there have been a number of design changes, as well as packaging and product developments that have kept Kinnie

ahead of the curve and helped to rejuvenate the brand’s image, always with the objective of remaining relevant to its consumers. In 1984, Diet Kinnie was launched amid growing health consciousness among consumers. In 2007, the Kinnie line was further expanded with a sugar free, extra orange flavour variant called Kinnie Zest, targeted towards a younger generation of new consumers. Kinnie Vita, a mid-calorie beverage containing only half the sugar and calories of regular soft drinks, is the most recent variant of Kinnie. Launched in 2014, Kinnie Vita is sweetened using only natural sugars - stevia, sweetness from a natural source, and sugar. Over 1.5 million tourists visit Malta annually, and the tourist market is given a high element of importance in Kinnie’s annual promotional calendar. Kinnie enjoyed a breakthrough listing with Amazon UK in August 2011, resulting in wider availability for tourists who want to continue to enjoy the taste of the Mediterranean in the UK. Whilst in Malta or Gozo, you can find and enjoy Kinnie in practically all bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Kinnie can also be purchased from all supermarkets and grocery shops across the Maltese Islands.

More information on Kinnie can be found on www.kinnie.com or on Facebook kinnie.mt

IMPLANTRETAINED OVERDENTURES Many, many people who have conventional dentures don't wear them for the simple fact that they don't stay in place and hurt because they move when chewing. The use of dental implants to stabilise dentures has proven to be a very successful treatment modality for many people worldwide. The number continues to grow as word spreads about the effectiveness and long-term durability of the treatment. In fact, it has been reported that dental implants have the highest success rate of any implanted surgical device in the body.

Problems with loose dentures There are still millions of people around the world who are missing enough teeth to require the use of a denture. Many of them have problems in keeping their dentures secure, particularly in the lower jaw. The increase in mobility of the lower jaw denture is due to the fact that, unlike the hard palate in the upper jaw, the lower jaw has less surface area and therefore less support and retention. The lower denture also has a tendency to be displaced by the tongue on talking and chewing. On the other hand, the disadvantage of the upper denture is the middle plate, which covers the palate reducing taste and affecting speech. Patients with a strong gag reflex cannot tolerate any palatal coverage of the denture, further reducing the ability of the denture to stay in place!

“No matter how good your dentures are you will still be subjected to a reduced ability to chew all types of food reducing your quality of life” Unfortunately as time goes by, we tend to put up with the situation which we come to believe is our only option with no way out. If you have this problem, you already know about the embarrassment of moving dentures. There is, however, a way to stabilise your dentures enough to feel like fixed teeth, but still be left with the advantage of removing the denture thus maximising denture hygiene and comfort. All this with the help of dental implants.

Conclusion Dental implants used for overdenture stabilisation: • Restore proper chewing, allowing a better diet and improved health • Improves speech and confidence • Increases comfort with close to no irritation of gum tissue • Replaces lost hard and soft oral tissue propping up facial features reducing creases and improving appearance. • Ends the cost and inconvenience of denture adhesives Ask your dentist!

Dr Jean Paul Demajo Dental & Implant Surgeon Trained in London and is now working in private practice in Malta.

A Case study: A middle-aged woman presents with very mobile upper and lower remaining dentition. Having been in this situation for long and reluctant to have dentures, she finally plucks up the courage and opts for overdentures. The treatment plan included: 1. Extraction and immediate placement of conventional dentures. 2. Placement of implants 2 month post-extraction of teeth whilst retaining her previously fabricated conventional dentures. 3. Elimination of the conventional dentures and construction of new overdentures to be supported by the implants 4 months post-implantation.

A visit to the Eternal City

There are some cities that, no matter how often you visit, always have something new to offer. Rome is one such city. With Air Malta’s 10 weekly flights Italy’s capital is easily accessible. WORDS BY Air Malta

M

ajestic architecture, delicious food, a most rich history, impressive art masterpieces; the list of attractions in this city is endless. And even though you have visited a number of times, you know you will return many times again. Here’s why: There’s a belief that you have to throw a coin into the celebrated rococo fountain that is the Fontana di Trevi. Visitors stick to this ritual, so perhaps that’s why they keep going back. The fountain dates all the way back to 1732, when work was first begun by Nicola Salvi and was completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762. A word of warning

01

though as the fountain is undergoing restoration work, so you cannot enjoy it in its full glory. Although, of course, you can still toss in that coin, and a second and perhaps third if you wish to be hearing wedding bells soon. But, of course, there are oodles more attractions to savour in this gorgeous city. What visitors like especially about Rome is that many of the main attractions are within walking distance from one an other. Why not start at the Vatican City? Just look for the recognisable dome of St Peter’s Basilica. The Piazza San Pietro, which circles the basilica, is a masterpiece in itself. And,

01

41

travel

if you want to be a proper tourist, stand near the central obelisk (there’s a stone that marks the exact spot), and focus on the colonnade. You'll see each row of four columns line up perfectly to look like a single column. Look out for the baroque altar baldachin, which stands over the tomb of St Peter, and Michelangelo’s famous Pieta sculpture in the basilica itself. The Vatican Museums are a must see, and the crown jewel here is, of course, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Castel Sant'Angelo is nearby. This is now a museum but was originally commissioned as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD. Exhibits here include weaponry and artifacts related to the building's long, colourful history.

02

03

01. Colosseum 02. Fontana di Trevi 03. Piazza San Pietro

The elliptical Piazza Navona is close and was originally a chariot-racing stadium. Most famous here is one of the three fountains: Bernini’s baroque Fountain of the Four Rivers, which represents the four great rivers of the four continents known in the 17th century when it was built: the Danube in Europe, the Nile in Africa, the Rio de la Plata in South America, and the Ganges in Asia. Another must-see is the impressive Coliseum, it was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman empire and is the largest in the world. It could hold an estimated 80,000 spectators. A word of warning about the lurking animators, especially in the Colosseum area. Dressed in an attractive centurion kit complete with pseudoarmour and red plumes sticking out of their helmet, some take advantage of unsuspecting tourists and lure them into taking photos and then charging the earth. Of course, the more you visit a city, the more you begin to see its cracks and flaws. And Rome is certainly not a city without them: the traffic can be a nightmare (though for the tourist ambling around the city and with no strict timetables, this is not really a problem), and if you speak to any Roman, they will complain till the cows come home about unemployment and the government. But despite this, the Romans still manage to retain a certain zest for life, which is manifest in their mouth-watering dishes, their idiosyncratic sense of style and their warm approach to socialising. Rome, visitors will be back.

PARANORMAL

GHOSTS OF MALTA WORDS BY Ricky Vella

I’m sure we have wondered, from time to time, whether ghost stories are nothing more than imaginary and traditional tales made up by folks, purely to entertain their children for want of something better or simply to pass the time. So, for those who do believe in such phenomena, or have experienced such encounters, research has been carried out to find out the reasons behind these mysteries.

J

oseph Attard, author of one of the most popular local books written on the above subject, entitled The Ghosts of Malta, explains that apparitions all have strong connections with their ambience and the beautiful and mystical Siclo-Norman styles, as well as the complex Baroque styles of architecture. They have been shaped and structured upon the ‘cosmopolitan’, ‘feudal’ and ‘religious’ establishments which overwhelmed

Malta at that particular time, thus giving out a cold sense of bloodshed and hardships plus courage and splendour. Among some of the haunted locations he mentions are Manoel Island, Fort St Angelo, The Grand Masters’ Palace in Valletta, St John’s Co-Cathedral and Verdala Castle, not forgetting a range of houses in many other localities. So if you dare, let’s go together to some, such locations where ghosts have actually been said to have been seen.

PARANORMAL

She tried escaping through a window, but unfortunately fell to her death

Verdala Palace: Grand Master de Verdalle left this palace to all future generations – and it was at a much later date that the connection with the Blue Lady came to be.

01

The Blue Lady, tradition tells us, was a young woman (Grand Master De Rohan’s niece). Apparently, and to her utter dismay, a suitor was selected for her, who was rejected on numerous occasions – this led to frustration and anger on his part and he was left with no choice but to imprison her in her private chambers. One day, in desperation, after being locked up for some time, she tried escaping through a window, but unfortunately fell to her death. Since that sad night she has been said to be seen roaming around the building wearing a blue gown – the same gown she was wearing when she fell to her death. Field Marshal Lord Metheun, was governor of Malta in 1915 and 1919 and, at that particular time, had a house guest, a certain Howard Jones, who was sleeping in the room that belonged to the Blue Lady. One fine day he asked the governor who the lady in blue was, as he kept seeing her reflection in the mirror whilst he was dressing himself. According to Mr Attard there was no need for the governor to explain this mystery as most of the staff, by this time, had seen her too. At this particular time Lord Methuen invited the bishop of London to visit the island and join them for dinner. He did not turn up on time, a very unusual occurrence, not only because this was being held in his honour, but he was an absolute stickler for time. After arriving half an hour late he explained that he had ‘supernatural trouble’ – his door apparently opened on its own when he was about to depart, only to shut in his face before he had time to go through it! He stayed inside for roughly half an hour and it was only when he started reciting prayers for exorcisms that it was possible for him to leave the room. Makes you wonder doesn’t it?

It is said that just after WWII an apparition of a Black Knight used to appear out of nowhere

It is said that just after WWII an apparition of a Black Knight used to appear out of nowhere – this was actually seen by both a local and an English workman whilst working near a heap of rubble. At that time reconstruction on Fort Manoel was being done mostly to give back some sense of décor to the chapel. The Knight, fully decked out in his armour and ceremonial dress of the Order of St John would be seen supervising the men at work and his apparitions became very frequent, once the work there became more regular – some of the men said they noticed similarities between the Black Knight and a painting of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena himself by Favray – which still hangs in the President’s Palace in Valletta. A crypt was opened beneath the chapel, permission was given by the Archbishop,

Captain Brockman, who was in fact leading the work there and found it had been destroyed by vandals – the altar and the reliefs bearing the crucifix and the souls in purgatory were all ruined. Eventually when the crypt was restored, the knight stopped appearing, however he did come back – when investigations started again it was discovered that the crypt had been abandoned, only to be ruined once again – this occurred during 1980. Still disbelieve? There are loads more to read about - I haven’t personally experienced any spirit or ghost, yet having discovered so many stories and reading them avidly I can’t help but think… are all these people mad or is there some truth in what they say? One thing is for sure the whole subject absolutely enthrals me and keeps me riveted to the pages I read…so whether true or not I shall carry on finding more and more and spreading the word!

FOOD REVIEW

October heralds in a change of season and routine WORDS BY Benjamin Sammut

October, along with May, is probably the favourite month of the year. The weather is fine, the sea warm, yet the heat and dust of the summer months have been washed away by the September rains and, once the scirocco season, is over there is a new crispness in the air. Sunday lunch dishes at Gululu in St Julians

This is the ideal weather for country walks for which there are several alternatives, all pleasant with magnificent views and surroundings. One can Google the Malta Ramblers Association for some useful hints. It would be wise to carry a small towel and bathing wear in your napsack as you are never far from the sea, an October dip on an abandoned beach is a pretty unique experience. October is also the month when Maltese families, somewhat reluctantly, switch back to their winter time table. The little holiday homes by the sea are shut up, those lucky enough to enjoy a half – day time table are back to a 9.00 to 5.00 routine and children are packed off back to school. Village squares become busier again on Sunday mornings, as the Parish churches churn out groups of worshippers with women standing around the parvis nattering loudly about what they had prepared for lunch and menfolk visiting the band Club of their preference for a band of drinks and a chat. Local confectioners display their finest cakes and pastries to be taken home for Sunday lunch. Not unlike other Christian Mediterranean countries, Sunday lunch in Malta is the big event of the week. This is the day

when no one works – essential services and the hospitality trade apart - , when most take a step back from the daily rat race and indulge in a few drinks, a hearty lunch and maybe an afternoon snooze, all the while enjoying family and friends. Sunday is family day and families in Malta are consideringly still pretty large when compared to other European countries, especially when extended family is included. Distance has no meaning on an island 27 km long by 14 km wide, and, therefore, getting to the mother-in-law doesn’t take much time at all. Sunday lunch is also the day when diets and good intentions are cast aside. Honestly speaking the aromas of fennel seed and onion, pork crackling and baked pasta are enough to seduce the most ardent of fitness freaks. For this, Mqarrun followed by Majjal bil–Patata l–forn is probably the most typical of Maltese Sunday lunch menus. Mqarrun – Tunisian Makroum and Italian Maccheroni – is a bake of pasta tubes in a rich meat sauce, often with the inclusion of quartered hard boiled eggs and chicken livers – borrowed from its more sophisticated relative the Timpana a Christmas special, or perhaps fried aubergine. Considering that this

is a relatively light dish, it is followed by roast leg or, perhaps, rolled shoulder of pork laid on a bed of sliced potato and onion rings, flavoured with fennel seed, sea salt and coarsely ground black pepper. In many villages the cooking is done at the local bakery where the world’s best bread is baked. Housewives take their dish early in the morning and this is placed, along with several others, in the slightly cooler – temperature still at around 200 degrees - stone oven where it is left to cook slowly until done. Maltese food is mostly found in houses, and restaurants offering authentic fare are few (fenkata joints apart – the fenkata is the traditional meal of spaghetti with rabbit sauce followed by fried or stewed rabbit). Gululu in Spinola Bay, St. Julian’s, offers an interesting and varied selection of Maltese dishes, traditional and contemporary, and Sunday lunch there is a most enjoyable experience. Large tables of rowdy families with prams and pushchairs in tow are not uncommon so do not go there on a Sunday for a romantic meal. Many things have changed in Malta, especially over the last four to five decades, however family unity exemplified by a home cooked, rowdy Sunday lunch lives on, thank God.

TIPICO’S COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Human Resource Business Partner MARTIN SCHILLIG discusses how Tipico rewards its employees for their work. When it comes to salaries, equality, fairness and market competiveness are the name of the game for Martin. “We are mindful to remain internally fair, making sure our employees feel appreciated for their work, but also to remain externally balanced so we keep attracting the best talent from outside the company,” he explains. “We define salary bands for every role in the organisation, which we benchmark against external market data. Then according to the candidate’s background and experience, we decide on which part of the salary band that candidate should be placed,” he adds. With an eye on the future, Tipico will start a systematic job evaluation procedure where points are assigned to every role. This then helps Martin compare the weight of each role within the organisation, thus ensuring to minimise any internal inequality. “A good reward system has to stand pub talk. Sometimes there are differences between the rewards received by people doing similar jobs, but we make sure that there are always fair reasons that justify any disparity, whether it is experience or some other reason,” Martin says. Good salaries and performance bonuses are always important but what are the other benefits for Tipico employees?

Project Manager – Marketing

Martin recites an impressive list: “Health Insurance, including preventive care options; Dental Insurance; a Gym Bonus and plenty of Development Opportunities; as well as a brand new accident insurance including sick benefits for up to 52 weeks. This last one makes us quite special in the industry. We want our employees and their families to feel secure.” Martin feels that the Tipico Values are reflected in the brand’s reward philosophy. “Our pay review process and job evaluations are done by a committee using a transparent system where the employee is aware of the reasoning behind the processes. When it comes to innovation, we look at the best practices outside the company but never just copy what others do. We always try to be better and come up with the best practices that fit Tipico’s diverse workforce. “Another brand value is courage, and it is what makes us unafraid to try new things and become better than the competition. We also trust in our employee’s passion – we do not rigidly enforce working hours, while, on the other hand, we look closely at their performance.” Finally, Martin concludes, Tipico is always looking at ways of improving its friendly work environment and build chemistry between the departments and the employees. “Tipico is mindful of keeping the trust factor at the forefront of the relationship between employees, and between employees and their management.”

THE RENTAL INVEST BOOM Malta is booming. There is a steady in-flow of people moving to Malta for a range of reasons. Some come to work, some to set up business, some to establish residency, and others to study. All of these categories represent people moving to the island for prolonged periods, and although very different in budget and requirements, they have one thing in common – they need a place to live. WORDS BY Robert D’Amato

T

his demographic phenomenon has contributed to increased opportunities for rental investment for local and foreign owners alike. One of the most attractive aspects of this business opportunity is that a large range of different types of properties in different locations will fit the needs of a very diverse market. Demand is not uniform and the supply of properties from small studio flats in central areas or close to the University in Msida, as well as high standard apartments in top residential areas, well-kept and attractive villas, and even more homely family houses – are all in demand. In addition, as the reasons for people moving to Malta continue to diversify, so do their requirements and their choice of location. As the island’s reputation as a holiday destination and holiday island for the young (and not so young) continues to grow, it also guarantees that the more traditional short-let self-catering holiday property continues to be in demand, especially, but not exclusively, in the high summer season.

This is an excellent moment for investment in rental property, but, as in all such capital ventures, one needs to be sure to go about it wisely. Information on market trends, on what is in short supply and high demand will provide the confidence a buyer needs in order to enter this market. Knowledge of the best buyto-let-loans available though the banks, is yet another piece of information that the buyer might need in order to comfortably enter this investment opportunity.

dedicated to the rental market, you can be sure that you are dealing with people who are experts in the field. And, once you’ve purchased your rental property and put it on the company’s books, they can continue to assist you in finding potential clients willing to rent your property.

Established property companies, such as Frank Salt Real Estate with local experience in sales and letting dating back to 1969, can provide the buyer of rental property with the inside knowledge of the market in Malta and all the information pertinent to making a careful and rewarding purchase. Frank Salt Real Estate has the largest and widest selection of residential and commercial properties on the market for sale and to let, and with their insight into the sale-for-let market and the assistance of one of the company’s highly trained and knowledgeable property consultants, you are well on the way to making an important investment purchase.

There are many questions and many issues which the potential buyer of a rental property must grapple with. The financial balance between expenditure and the property which renders the best returns on investment, is certainly upmost in people’s minds. Trends are changing. Areas such as central Malta, not traditionally associated with buy-forlet purchase are now in demand. Such properties tend to cost less to buy than property in the Sliema / St Julians’, but is increasingly in demand for those families who are renting for long periods and have no reason to be in the busy areas of Malta. Buyers may also with to consider the potential returns on investing in one large property or in spreading out the investment, and possibly the risk, by purchasing smaller units perhaps in a single multi-apartment property.

The service you can expect from Frank Salt Real Estate doesn’t stop there however. Since the company, through its network of offices, provides letting services for long and short lets, residential and commercial properties, with branches in Sliema, St Julians, Marsascala and Gozo which are fully

The options are many, varied and vast. The potential for returns on buy-to-let property investment is high. With some guidance from people with experience of the changing landscape related to rental trends in Malta, some interesting returns on investment can be made.

Sa Maison – A secret garden WORDS BY Odelia Gauci

Strolling along the seafront at Pietà, your gaze may come to rest across the water at a snug little oasis of greenery nestling in Floriana’s battlements. This is the garden of Sa Maison, which is not only charming but has several historical associations.

S

a Maison recalls Chevalier Caille Maison who had a hunting lodge there. This attractive and romantic garden occupies the top bastion. It still has the elusive charm of an old-world garden. Moreover it is bounded on three sides by a magnificent sweep of stately bastions which, with age, have taken on a mellow yellow colour. To the Maltese it is known as Il-Gnien tal-Milorda, that is Milady’s Garden. The Lady in question was Lady Julia Lockwood who lived in the house, which

has since been demolished, and looked after this garden between 1842 and 1856. This tenure was on a year-to-year basis since, because of its position, there was always the possibility that it might have had to be ‘reoccupied by troops at any time. Lady Julia paid 40 pounds sterling a year in rent for the Sa Maison house and garden. In 1850 the property was revalued when it was increased to 50 pounds sterling. The premises were beautifully kept, with most bills being paid by her. She made additions and improvements, especially to the garden. Unfortunately, in 1852, soon after the rent had been slightly increased, Lady Lockwood was required to give up the Sa Maison house and outworks. The property was to be restored to the Military Department. This far from pleased Lady Lockwood and in 1853 she appealed through the Governor, at the time Sir William Reid, to his Grace the Duke of Newcastle, claiming £500 as compensation for her eviction from Sa Maison. To quote from her letter: “Among much done in the way of

improvements, I may mention that in the garden I expended in trellises and seats alone £70, besides the purchase of orange trees and other plants, the putting up of many ornamental works such as fountains and reservoirs of water, iron dials, building walls, laying out walls etc. “In the house I went to the expense of building one entire new room, improving others, altering and improving windows and blinds, putting stones and fireplace, bath and stone for the same, several alterations and improvements in the servants’ offices and in short I expended very considerable sums of money under the impression that I was doing so to my permanent home.” But Lady Julia really had no well-founded claim for compensation. However, she was awarded £100 to cover the expenses of her removal. By 1856 Lady Lockwood handed over the property to the military authorities. But, to this day her name, though anonymously, is linked with this beautiful garden – Il Gnien tal-Milorda, Milady’s Garden.

Between the years 1856 and 1900, when a full battalion of infantry occupied the Floriana Barracks, it was an unwritten law that the regiment should tend this garden. This almost became a cult. But one dark night, Malta’s complement for the Army in Natal left to share the glories and the disasters of the year 1899, the Boer War. The garden was neglected. It was eventually taken over by the Civil Government and turned once more into a flourishing and luxuriant garden. Try to pay this garden a visit and, while you’re wandering in it, look out for the regimental crests carved in stone or rock by soldiers of the Infantry Battaliion who occupied the Floriana Barracks between 1853 and 1903. There is also a small model of a castle made of Maltese stone, which can be found in the garden as well. It is dedicated to the 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment. Many an hour was spent by the Tommies to try and leave a souvenir to posterity. There was little to occupy their spare time

in those days. Several relics remain. These relics took the shape of the crest or motto of the regiment stationed at the time in Floriana. Some erected a little monument in the flowerbeds which they left as a record of their stay. Apparently, until the outbreak of World War II there were at least a couple of score of these souvenirs which the gardeners made a point of keeping clean. But during the Blitz some were obliterated. This is an excellent place to breathe some Maltese air. A garden crammed with atmosphere and which it most certainly holds in its fortifications, its alleys and stone benches secrets and human stories. It has a sense of place. From parts of it, looking over its fortifications you can see an armanda of bobbing boats. It has a tiny watchtower or Gardjola, precariously perched, keeping a ghostly watch. From it you can contemplate the water, which is everywhere, and a sweep of Marsamxett Harbour. Sa Maison Garden could be the secret garden you hoped existed.

Why Real Estate makes a world of sense for older investors

term real estate market analysis proves that real estate investments carry a lower risk than many other investments.

High net-worth clients, especially those nearing retirement age, tend to want to shy away from real estate investing at times, but the fact of the matter is that real estate can still be a lucrative investment option for people of all ages and wealth levels.

T

here are many reasons why clients who are both high net-worth and nearing retirement age should take a good look at real estate investing as they work to reach their goals of growing and retaining their hard-earned wealth. Here are three specific reasons why real estate investing might be a benefit to your high net-worth portfolio if you’ve reached middle age or beyond.

A GOOD DIVERSIFIER Real estate is a valuable addition to a welldiversified portfolio. A well-diversified portfolio for an older client should contain a variety of investment types that lean more toward low risk than high risk. Now’s not the time to be playing high-risk gambling games with your investment portfolio if you plan on retiring any time within the next 5-10 years, or especially if you’ve already reached what the masses

consider to be retirement age. Slow and steady wins the race for older investors. Owning real estate is a great way to bring some diversification into your investment portfolio and yet still keep risk low.

INTRINSIC VALUE MEANS LOWER RISK Land, cattle and gold were often touted as the most secure investment options back in the early 1900s, when the stock market was still new and didn’t have the solid return-on-investment history that it does today. While you may have doubts about investing in gold, there’s no arguing that real estate investments have proven themselves to be trustworthy over the long haul. With a historical return rate, real estate investments have a solid history of producing positive return rates that nearly always beat inflation. While, like any other investment, real estate values do have their occasional dips, long-

TYPES OF REAL ESTATE TO CONSIDER Clients have their own take on what types of real estate investments best suit their plush portfolios, and the truth of the matter is that real estate investing is growing more and more popular among all kinds of investors.

THE BOTTOM LINE Whatever type of real estate investment you choose, make sure that you’ve educated yourself well on the ins and outs of real estate investing. You deserve to have hard-earned wealth continue to work hard for you as you sail toward your retirement years in peace, tranquility and a secure wealth portfolio. At Homes of Quality Ltd. Wheels of fortune OLIVER MANGION says wheelchair rugby suits his thrill for energy. Determined and fearless, he tells Veronica Stivala of his plans to participate and win at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo

67

A MALTESE ABROAD

O

liver Mangion is fast making a name for himself in the field of disability sports. He is so skilled at playing wheelchair rugby that he has been singled out to be in the running to form part of the famous Team GB at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. The story behind how he came to be part of this dream team reads like the plot for a storyline. But more of that later. Mangion is 19 years old and is living testament to the fact that where there’s a will, there’s a way. We meet on a hot morning in Valletta. This is the second time I am interviewing Mangion and, just like last time, I find myself in awe of his resilience and determination. Oliver was born with a very rare chromosome translocation, with severe deformities on all four limbs. He has had 50 operations to date, including toe-to-hand transfers, amputations below the knee, bone lengthening treatment, and many operations to on his arms, hands and legs to improve his dexterity.

Although Oliver was born in Malta he lives and studies in the UK, because that is where the specialists are. Mangion was always the sporty type and has trained in swimming and athletics, for which he sprints on blades, in addition to wheelchair rugby. It is interesting to point out how wheelchair rugby is actually the most recent sport that Mangion picked up, and is the sport he is excelling at. He is no longer able to swim because of surgery and had to put running on the back burner both because he could not balance training and studying (he sat for his ‘A’ levels this summer) and also because he was having problems with his knees and needed to give his joints a rest. The story that led to his being singled out starts with an advert in a magazine that would usually be thrown away. By chance, Mangion’s mother happened to flip through a free magazine they received at home and noticed an advert for a

wheelchair rugby taster session, which Mangion decided to give a go. Mangion previously had to keep back from playing with a local team because there were not any in the area where he lives and London would be too far for him to balance school and sport. Not only was the fact that the taster sessions came to his home town a stroke of luck, but also rare was the fact that there were enough suitable players to make a team. In order to qualify to play wheelchair rugby you need to have disabilities that include at least some loss of function in a minimum of three limbs; most are medically classified as quadriplegic. It also must be pointed out that Mangion had only started training in wheelchair rugby in December 2013. This was around the same time that the sport was given enough importance - strongly aided by the phenomenal success at the London 2012 Paralympics to receive funding.

It won’t just drop on your doorstep but it’s also not a huge amount of effort to find something that will make life worthwhile

Mangion always felt a strong attraction to the sport. He remembers clearly how he spent lots of time in front of TV, after recovering from amputations, lying on the sofa and watching the Paralympics. “Wheelchair rugby was the sport that I thought was most suited to my personality,” comments Mangion. Indeed this makes for an appropriate metaphor for this strong young man who gets out there and makes the most of life. “If you are disabled, or the parents of a disabled child, you need to search for something,” he encourages. “It won’t just drop on your doorstep but it’s also not a huge amount of effort to find something that will make life worthwhile.” Speaking about the choice of sport he says: “Wheelchair rugby suits my thrill for energy and aggression,” he says of the sport which is known as ‘chess with violence’. This is because it requires both mental and physical skills to excel at this sport. Mangion reveals how he likes this sport so much because “it’s a contact sport where people do not go easy on me”. He first took up wheelchair rugby knowing that he would not be given the special treatment. “I hate when people go easy on me, like at school,” he reveals. “I thought that if I went into a sport where people were worse off than me then they would go hard on me.”

The story gets better as Mangion was coached by Steve Brown, who was captain of TeamGB for the London 2012 Paralympics, as his coach. “To me,” comments Mangion, “there is no argument. I’ve never seen a better coach around". Mangion attributes his opportunity to having been lucky. “My luck was in there,” he says, referring to the fact that a lot of success in sport is chance - which coach you end up with and where you live, for example. Of course, this only works if you have the skill, talent, dedication and motivation to succeed, with which Mangion is evidently brimming. So what started out as a hobby has slowly but surely developed into a professional sport. Mangion is currently leading the life of a professional athlete, training regularly, and watching what he eats and the lifestyle he leads. He is a member of the development squad from which the star players will be chosen in 2018 to play at the 2020 Paralympics. “Yes disability can be rough but it’s also fabulous,” says Mangion, a veritably eloquent ambassador for people with disability. “I wouldn’t change the way I am. I might have had a boring life if I was any different and probably would not have reached as far as I have had it not been for my disability.”

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

A trail through history

WORDS BY Steven Bonello

The Maltese Islands have been continuously inhabited for around 7,000 years. Man has walked and explored practically every inch of the archipelago, and civilization after civilization has built temples and abodes, dug tombs, constructed roads and otherwise altered the landscape according to its needs. A few heritage trails across the islands highlight artefacts left by generations past but perhaps none span a time frame as impressive as the Xemxija Heritage Trail.

72

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Standing proudly at the bend in the road is a massive 1,000 year old carob tree – considered to be the oldest on the islands

01

T

he trail is best accessed from the bottom of Xemxija hill near a bus stop called Roti. There’s a signpost marked Roman Road and just climb the short street Triq ir-Ridott to find the start of the trail. The trail sets off along an ancient cobbled winding road. This reputedly Roman road is probably the oldest route leading to the north of the island and was likely the earliest access to the equally ancient Marian shrine in Mellieha – traditionally linked with Saint Luke, who, together with the Apostle Paul, was shipwrecked here in 60 AD.

A handful of interesting features mark this short stretch of road. Most intriguing is a wall of apiaries in a clearing at the side of the track. Malta was well known in ancient times for the quality of its honey and the apiaries here – thought to be of Punic or Roman origin – seem to testify to that claim. Nearby is a massive and much weathered standing stone (menhir) associated with Malta’s temple culture, and standing proudly at the bend in the road is a massive 1,000 year old carob tree – considered to be the oldest on the islands - with an impressive trunk over seven metres in circumference and

roots which go deep into the soil and break through the rocks beneath it. Past the carob is an open cave with clear signs of burial niches inside. Used since prehistoric times, the cave’s façade collapsed over time and the cave was then likely used as a shelter by pilgrims along this road. The road now stops its winding way and levels out on to a flat expanse of land. There is more of interest here. Some way along the now straight road and to the right is a well preserved Punic tomb – curiously the only one on this plateau. Nearby are a couple of spacious caves with inner divisory

walls made of rubble. These are troglodytic caves used both for human and animal habitation. As elsewhere in the Mediterranean, troglodytism was not uncommon in the Maltese islands and the practice was only eradicated completely in the colonial era when the British forced the evacuation of the last known troglodytic community at Għar il-Kbir in the limits of Dingli. In the vicinity are also a set of prehistoric tombs dating from around 3600 BC. These were excavated in 1956 and yielded a rich collection of prehistoric material – including pottery now in the National Archaeology Museum in Valletta. Cart ruts – those mysterious rock-hewn sets of tracks so common in many places in Malta and thought to date to the Bronze Age – also make an appearance here. Make your way back to the straight road and follow it until the further ridge of the 01. C art Ruts in Xemxija 02. P unic Apiaries

plateau. On the right there is a metal barrier – go past it and keep to the track till its end where there is what looks like a small rural building but is in fact a camouflaged World War II gun post. By its side is a set of steps going to a lower level. Once down these, one comes across what looks like another ruined rural building with a graceful enough façade but an interior that is mostly rock cut. This is a prime example of a building that has gone through multiple uses over time. There are rock cut Punic tombs on the interior walls but, surprisingly, the cave complex was converted in Roman times to serve as a bathhouse with provision of both hot and cold water. Later it was used for troglodytic living but sometime in the 17th century a wall and an elegant doorway were used to close off the complex. Talk about reuse and recycling!

On the trek back, and more or less opposite the first Punic tomb and troglodyte cave, is the remnant of a megalithic temple. Interpretation is difficult from the little that remains but the large rocks form an apse similar to other temple sites. All major features of the trail have informative signs which help with interpretation. But really this heritage trail amounts to more than the sum of its parts. It is set mostly on high ground in an idyllic garigue landscape which, from autumn to early summer, teems with a variety of plant life including a clutch of attractive orchid species in spring. The views from this high ridge over much of northern Malta are also another fair reward for the visitor. Further wandering is also an option - there are easy to follow trails that form the nearby woodland lead to the picturesque village of Manikata about a mile away.

GOLD MEDAL WINNING GRAN CAVALIER CHARDONNAY It’s not very often a triple award winning wine comes along, let alone twice. But that’s what has happened with a Maltese winemaker’s flagship white wine brand Gran Cavalier, when it was entered into various international wine competitions recently.

L

ast year Malta’s leading winemaker Delicata, entered its 2013 vintage Gran Cavalier Sauvignon Blanc and won two Bronze medals in London and a Gran Menzione in Italy. This year, however, the 2014 vintage Gran Cavalier Chardonnay was entered and it won three medals; a gold medal at the Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, a silver medal at the Chardonnay du Monde in Burgundy

(the embodiment of Chardonnay) and a bronze medal at the International Wine Challenge in London. In total Delicata has amassed 106 international awards for its wines. The 2014 Gran Cavalier Chardonnay D.O.K. Malta Superior was barrel fermented in new French oak 225 litre barriques. It is a soft, full flavoured, dry white wine with warm toasty aromas. On the palate it has good weight and concentrated fruit flavours with a smooth, buttery, lingering finish. The official tasting note that accompanied one of the medals awarded, written by one of the international judges describes the wines as “Nut and buttercream aromas, in contrast with a zesty lime palate. Rich, ripe and classy.”

Summit of iGAMING MALTA

How do I find a job in Malta?

Step 1 Figure out what you want

Double the exhibitors. Double the delegates. Double the conferences

STRENGTHS Where do your strengths lie? JOB FOCUS What are you cut out to be?

T

his pretty much sums up the feedback from SiGMA14 to SiGMA15. SiGMA, the Summit of iGaming in Malta, took off last with the utopia of bringing the whole industry, from affiliates to C-Level executives, solution providers to operators, under one roof. We were often told to focus on one sector instead but we firmly believed that the three distinct pillars within the industry – solution providers, operators and affiliates - are coming closer together. Today’s affiliate, for instance, is fast becoming a successful operator within months, which is why we wanted a 360° iGaming showcase in Malta that reflected this trend. There’s never a dull moment in this industry, not only in Malta, but worldwide, and the SiGMA show couldn’t take place at a more pertinent time. At SiGMA15 each conference will only last half a day, giving delegates more time to hop from one stand to the other and network at the adjacent expo floor. From regulatory issues, to payments, anti-fraud, security, crypto currencies, affiliates, SEO and gamification – there is a topic to suit every delegate’s interest. With 300 gaming companies based in Malta and now also a yearly show like SiGMA; it's easy to understand why SiGMA and Malta should earn a spot in your busy business calendars. Book the dates, 4th – 7th November, and register online today.

MALTA Auberges

Malta’s Auberges

WORDS BY Ricky Vella

During 1530 the Order of St John arrived in Malta and set up their Convent in Birgu, at that time a small fishing village just inside the Grand Harbour.

T

he Order consisted of Knights from eight different nationalities or Langues. Maintaining their identity, which was very important to them, the Langues built their own Auberges or Inns of habitation This was largely because, whilst away from their own country, many of the Knights would have felt terribly homesick without their own hostels in Malta (Auberges). In 1571 the Order moved its headquarters to Valletta. The Langue of England had ceased to exist due to the Reformation of 1534, so the remaining seven soon built their Auberges in Valletta. Gerolamo Cassar was commissioned with this work whilst also engaged in the building of St John’s, there were other important works as well, all taking place in Valletta. All seven Auberges were built between 1571 and 1575. Each Langue built its own Auberge and all at its own expense. They all lived and had their meals in common in the individual inns. The Order’s statutes had a law that Knights who had more than 200 pounds were not allowed to live in the Auberges but had to maintain themselves and own their own property. Gerolamo Cassar’s predecessor, Francesco Laparelli, planned to build each auberge with a piazza, and at least three of them were built with an open space in the front - the Auberge d’Aragon, Auberge d’Auvergne and Auberge de Castille.

79

MALTA Auberges

Some interesting information about the Auberge d’Aragon..

closer to the city – this clarifies why this building was extremely plain.

Auberge d’Aragon

The heavy mouldings that surround each of the three windows are typical, as are Cassar’s distinctive outer corners. Rectangular in plan, it has a central courtyard surrounded by interconnecting rooms. The entrance is almost in the centre of the main façade and opens into the entrance hall with a coffered barrelvault and a flight of stairs that lead into the courtyard. To the present day the Auberge D’Aragon houses the Ministry for EU Affairs.

One of the first Auberges to be built in Valletta was for the Spanish provinces of Aragon, Catalonia and Navarre. This Auberge sits in Independence Square, across the road from the Anglican Cathedral. It is the oldest of the seven Auberges and one of the only two (the other being the Auberge de Provence) that have survived and in its original condition. The exterior of the building is quite plain yet contains some fine Renaissance rooms. The reason why the Auberge d’Aragon was never modified was that it was meant as a temporary accommodation for the Spanish knights, as a much larger hostel was intended

Just as an afterthought a quote describing Valletta. "Splendid town quite like a dream, rising perpendicular from the water’s edge to 80 meters in height" - Sir Walter Scott.

E

ven the greatest fans of Paceville would have to admit that it’s no oil painting. However it is where most of the ‘action’ is. Once you’re there it’s like arriving at the world’s biggest private party. It is full of promisinglooking establishments among which you are bound to find a couple which suit your taste. Well-appointed restaurants and hotels intermingle with far less distinguished ones. This part of Malta has gone through many phases and continues to change. Here one bar spills into the next and out onto the pavement. Bars and pubs have come and gone but a few stalwarts remain as popular watering holes. The music is mostly electronic; it is everywhere and it is loud. Foreign students who visit Malta to learn English are everpresent and, along with locals, are all out to have a good time. Additionally, there are several expats currently living in Malta. Paceville has become truly cosmopolitan. For those whose spirit fails to soar at the attractions of Paceville, a more elegant evening in an atmosphere replete with nostalgia is also available. Check out the nearby casinos. There, you may try your luck, or watch others do so, while enjoying a drink.

In the St Julian’s/Paceville area, cafés, restaurants, bars and pubs of all sorts can be found next to the clubs and shops. Go for a plate of pasta, a pizza, a Japanese, Thai, Italian, Maltese, or what have you, meal! There are also restaurants and bars al fresco, where you can breathe in the sea air. Think of yourself as Desmond Morris and just observe and take in the colourful bedlam. If you’ve already dined, had a drink and watched the world go by, you might like to return to the centre of Paceville. If clubbing isn’t your thing, perhaps people watching is. Observe

the youngsters looking for a new love or a true love. Look at that girl, her dress held up by faith alone - Where have the days of Little Women gone? Paceville is fun, it’s loud and it’s proud. There are bars and pubs wherever you go, some of them going back to the days when Malta was a fortress and full of servicemen. Settle down to a conversation under the stars and lubricate your vocal chords in some outdoor establishment, but remember that you have to be self-disciplined for there is no one to count your drinks or warn you that it’s closing time!

Do you enjoy bowling? It’s also available in the heart of Paceville in St George’s Bay. Perhaps you want to catch up with the new films. There are several cinemas just round the corner. Spinola Bay, just down the hill from Paceville, is easily one of the most romantic spots in Malta. The 17th century Spinola Palace stands solitary perched above the bay. You can barely see it now unless you are close by. It was built by an Italian knight called Fra Paolo Rafael Spinola, an Admiral of the fleet of the Order of St John. It is a refined and eloquent building. Fra Raphael also built a chapel nearby which is still in use. Once, from the classical palace, gardens led to the boathouses, with a wide flight of steps between them leading to the sea. There were no other buildings. But it is no longer so today. Buildings have now sprouted up between the palace and the some of the older boathouses have now been turned into restaurants that enjoy the view of an armada of bobbing boats. There are still fishermen who bring in their catch in the early morning. You can see the fishing tackle and equipment which is used by the decreasing number of fishermen on the shore. At night, the beautiful old arches are lit up – like a diamond necklace. An enterprising boatman strung lights over his traditional fishing boat and offers a Loveboat tour of Spinola Bay. Even the children love this little journey. The wide promenade has great appeal, especially in the hot summer months where lovers, singles and families stroll along the stretch as far as Sliema until late in the evening, stopping for an ice-cream, a drink or something to eat, while perhaps sitting on a bench and having a chat. This once sleepy fishing village has been turned into something completely different. But it is full of life and laughter and one of the most frequented areas in Malta.

Air Malta Appointed CHOGM 2015 official airline

Air Malta has been appointed as the official airline for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) being held in Malta between the 27th and 29th November. Through this agreement Air Malta will be at the forefront of this prestigious event for Malta. The airline is co-operating closely with the CHOGM Task Force and offering reduced fares to the large number of delegations and accredited members of the international media who will be travelling to Malta in November. Air Malta Chairperson Maria Micallef said: “CHOGM Malta 2015 is a high profile event that will showcase Malta’s qualities to 53 countries around the Commonwealth and almost 1,000 international media representatives. As the island’s national carrier, we are proud to support this event which will undoubtedly leave a positive impact on Malta’s global standing and reputation.”

“The theme chosen for this year’s CHOGM - Adding Global Value – fits perfectly with the airline’s efforts throughout the years to add global value to Malta. Through its flight network, the airline has contributed significantly to Malta’s development and enabled the nation to pursue worldwide horizons,” added Ms Micallef. Phyllis Muscat, head of the CHOGM Malta 2015 Taskforce said, “We are delighted to be working with Air Malta, this is an important event where we showcase Malta as a place of international diplomacy. Air Malta, as the national airline, will play a crucial role, giving visitors their first taste of Maltese hospitality and a warm welcome to our islands.”

CHOGM Malta 2015 will certainly have a positive parallel effect on areas such as tourism and the economy and Air Malta is gearing up to be actively involved in marketing and promoting CHOGM. Special in-flight announcements will greet participants, delegates and members of the media who will be attending and reporting on the meetings. R

equests for accreditation have come from Bangladesh to Trinidad and Tobago, so it’s likely to be a highly colourful multi-cultural event. There is still time to apply, and the forum is open to men as well as women. Also addressing the forum will be Khadija Gbla, a leading campaigner against female genital mutilation, alongside a host of experts in the fields of leadership, media, health, education, technology, enterprise and social development. AIR MALTA NEWS

Air Malta Assists the Breast Care Support Group October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international health campaign organised by major breast cancer charities every October around the world. The aim of these campaigns is to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its causes. During this month Air Malta, together with Sky Gourmet, will be assisting Europa Donna Malta (Breast Care Support Group) the local charity dedicated to this cause. The aim of this fundraising campaign is to help increase attention amongst the airline’s passengers about the awareness and early detection of breast cancer as well as support for breast cancer patients. During this month Air Malta’s cabin crew distribute pink ribbons and collect donations from passengers on selected flights to help this Maltese charity organisation. Last year Air Malta’s cabin crew managed to collect €2,350 from this

campaign. Air Malta customer facing staff will be wearing their pink ribbon throughout October. The donations collected help fund the printing of communication material to raise awareness amongst women on the importance of choosing healthy food and practising some form of exercise. These are two important factors that may lower the risk of developing breast cancer. Gertrude Abela on behalf of the organisation thanked the national airline for its continuous support year after year. Ms. Abela said that it is only through the generosity of the public and organisations such as Air Malta that they can continue helping and supporting the community. Europa Donna Malta (Breast Care Support Group) is a voluntary non profit making NGO and has been active since 1989. Its mission is to raise awareness

and support patients and families passing through the trauma of breast cancer. Throughout the year the group works very hard to organise awareness campaigns and holds talks in schools and in different places of work. The group operates a 24 X 7 support line (which can be reached by dialling 9999 4666) and handles a large number of calls throughout the year, and can also offer one-to-one counselling. All services and materials are free of charge. This campaign also forms part of Air Malta’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives whereby the airline supports organisations that work hard in the Maltese community. No other airline operating to Malta provides continued support to voluntary and non-governmental organisations like Air Malta.

King of the Mediterranean The Dusky Grouper is a littoral species and thus lives solitarily around caves. Its distribution varies with its age, along with its gender; young female specimens are found closer to the coast whilst older male individuals reach depths of up to 300 m. It is a top predator which leaves its cave to feed on crabs, fish and octopus. It is a very friendly fish and commonly swims up to divers, however spends most of its time within various caves, making one its primary home.

thus requires the appropriate studies and evaluation to develop a conservation plan for its protection. We call it a flagship species since this will also help similar species suffering from such impacts. As numbers decreased, marine reserves were developed to ensure the protection of this species, amongst others, in areas such as North Western Mediterranean. Not only is it a delicacy in the Mediterranean, but it also plays a vital role in tourism attractions such as scuba diving and snorkelling.

Amongst being the best known grouper in the Mediterranean Sea, it is also known for its delicious taste, thus very popular amongst spearfishers. It is known as a flagship species in Malta due to its ecological importance. Since its severe decline in 2001, it has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN red list and

A number of dusky groupers can be seen throughout the displays at the National Aquarium, each one distinctively isolated from the other for characteristic behavioural reasons. We also have a couple of white and mottled groupers, which are found to be less threatened in the wild.

il-bizzilla talks to Noel Mercieca Inflight manager

How long have you been working with Air Malta? I joined the company in 1987 as a cargo clerk. After a couple of months there was an internal call for cabin crew which was my dream job. Luckily, after 28 years, I am still flying with as much enthusiasm as when I first started. I currently occupy an Inflight Manager position and I am also proud to represent our cabin crew community as our house union President. My team and Air Malta meet regularly and we strive to maintain a harmonious relationship for the best of our crew and Air Malta alike. What three words describe your job best? Challenging, inspiring and demanding. Although each flight is different and each day is a fresh start as an Inflight Manager, I need to keep my crew motivated. Years ago we used to fly as a set crew for a period

of time but nowadays I can be on a flight with 3 or 4 new crew members, especially during the summer months when Air Malta employs extra cabin crew to complement its busy schedule.

snorkelling and swimming in our lovely sea. I consider myself lucky to have been born in Malta with so many beaches within a short distance from where I live in St Paul's Bay.

What is the biggest challenge when working with Air Malta?

Which is your favourite destination and why?

I feel as though my biggest challenge is to ensure that, from the moment I greet new passengers until I say my goodbyes, our customer's, f lying experience has been a pleasant one. Irrispective of the circumstances our passengers are experiencing, we as cabin crew, need to make their journey a pleasant one. Do you have any hobbies? I love going for county walks during the cooler months and, of course,

I love Sicily and Calabria. I try to visit them a few times a year. Air Malta flies to Sicily with almost two daily flights and this makes it so easy for me to hop between both islands and enjoy the superb food and Mediterranean hospitality. Where are your favourite spots in Malta? Do you have any tips for anyone visiting our Islands? My favorites remain our sister island Gozo in Spring and the Blue Lagoon in Comino in summer. I really recommend both places to our passengers.

After 28 years I am still flying with as much enthusiasm as when I first started

A

ir Malta’s longest-standing chairman, Albert Mizzi, who passed away last month, will remain a shining example to all those involved in Air Malta for his unwavering dedication, passion and commitment towards the national airline. The iconic Maltese businessman spent almost two decades at the helm of Air Malta and was a key protagonist in the ambitious project to give Malta its own wings. “Air Malta owes much to the perseverance, imagination and commitment of Mr Mizzi, who steered the airline just after inception until he saw it thriving. Though a lot has changed over the decades, not least in the global aviation industry, Mr Mizzi remains a shining example for all Air Malta employees, past and present, as he always placed the best interests of the

airline before his own,” said Air Malta chairperson Maria Micallef. “I will personally remember Mr Mizzi for his gentlemanly manner, leadership skills and natural vision. As soon as I was appointed to the chairmanship, he made it a point to meet me to explain the history behind Air Malta. He also asked me to make sure we bring the airline back to its glory days. It is an honour, responsibility and privilege to ensure his legacy of success is rekindled within the airline. Mr Mizzi will remain a celebrated figure in Air Malta’s young but rich history and he will be sorely missed,” Ms Micallef added. Mr Mizzi took over the national airline in its first year, 1973, until 1992, during which time Air Malta turned record profits and gained its reputation as a reliable and safe airline that means business.
