FROM THE CHAIRPERSON... Merħba, With summer fast approaching we have this month launched our significantly expanded Summer 2022 flying programme. The seven-month schedule, which runs from 27th March to 29th October, will see the airline operate 125 weekly return direct services to 18 key European Airports, across 10 different countries. This month, after an absence of 10 years, we will be returning to Spain’s capital, Madrid with a three times’ weekly schedule and to London Gatwick with a three times’ weekly service. London Heathrow will be the most served route with 15 weekly scheduled flights, followed by Munich (12), Rome (10), and Paris with nine weekly frequencies on Orly and seven weekly frequencies to/ from Charles De Gaulle airport. Amsterdam, whilst operating a daily service, will see this increasing to eight services per week during July – October period. This ambitious flight schedule demonstrates our strong belief that travel and tourism will bounce back this summer. We are effectively doubling our operational capacity over this past winter. It is a strong commitment by Air Malta towards the travelling public and the industry, both for inbound tourism and outgoing local Maltese community. Our focus will remain on our core markets at the key main city airports of the UK, Italy, Germany and France, whilst we will maintain our commitment, and indeed grow it, on other established routes. We will also continue to work closely with our partner airlines driving connectivity over our European hub airports through codeshare agreements with airBaltic, Air France, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Czech Airlines, Emirates, ITA, KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Swiss International Air Lines and Turkish Airlines. Markets have already started showing signs of recovery with increased booking activity registered over recent weeks and we are pleased to have our aircraft operating program back to full utilization at pre-Covid levels. In April we will celebrate our 45 years of operation to Austria’s majestic capital of Vienna, and to Zurich, Switzerland’s capital and global centre for banking and finance. Charter flights to both cities were first operated in the summer of 1977 and eventually both routes grew to become an important part in the airline’s scheduled operations. We are thrilled to be celebrating this milestone and would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our partners, both local and foreign, who have worked with us throughout these years for their excellent co-operation and support. We are continuing to make improvements on our website and this month we will launch our ‘Best Fare Finder product’, to make it easier for customers to find best value flights. This feature allows customers to input a proposed budget and the site will offer a selection of destinations and flights available at this fare. On Women’s Day, marked on 8 March 2022, Air Malta announced that it will be joining 101 other airlines in signing up to the IATA 25by2025 initiative so that our airline can become a change agent in the aviation industry to make it truly diverse and inclusive. The IATA 25by2025 is a global initiative that aims to strengthen the airline industry by encouraging gender equality in aviation by 2025, and therefore lay the foundations for creating long-term sustainability in the industry. A Memorandum to this effect was signed in Berlin on November 19, 2019, by the leaders of 29 European airlines. This voluntary initiative is an initial step to making the aviation industry more gender balanced. With many airlines and industry partners already committing to 25by2025, we are paving the way for an industry that recognises female talent and create opportunities for women in which they can thrive. By joining this IATA initiative, Air Malta, will be able to join a global community of airlines, sharing and learning from best practices designed to help us all ensure the industry continues to attract and retain the very best talent and rebuild our industry. For more information and the latest news about Air Malta and our Summer flight schedule please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly to your inbox. RED TOWER

Popeye's Village has grown from its roots as a film set of the 1980 Musical Production 'Popeye' into one of the major tourist attractions within the Maltese islands. Nowadays the film set has been converted into a small attraction fun park, consisting of a collection of rustic and ramshackle wooden buildings. It is located just outside of Mellieħa, at Anchor Bay, 3km (2 miles) from the village core of Mellieħa Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady situated at the edge of a hill, in the heart of Mellieħa. Built-in the late 19th century, this church is famous both for pilgrimages and for the stunning views across the surrounding bay. The building on top of the Sanctuary is the parish priest's residence. The oldest part of the building was presumably once a small monastery traditionally attributed to the Augustinian Friars.

St Agatha's tower, more commonly known as the Red Tower, is a sizeable bastioned watchtower in Mellieħa. It was built between 1647 and 1649, as the sixth of the Lascaris towers. It is said that the Red Tower is dedicated to Saint Agatha as her strength and faith would protect the tower and its keepers from natural disasters.

GHADIRA BAY

ARMIER BAY

This well-loved beach is also known as Għadira (pron. a-deerah) Bay. It's roughly 800m long and was awarded Blue Flag status (which is a recognition of quality based on water quality, environmental management, safety and services, among other indicators). The long sandy beach is one of the islands most popular, not to mention the turquoise waters framing the shoreline.

The Armier Bay consists of two beaches, the most prominent beach is known as Armier and the other one as Little Armier. The sea of this bay is bright iridescent turquoise, akin to the picturesque sea of the nearby Blue Lagoon.

Outside the main Parish Church sits a quaint terrace. Here offers a spectacular vantage point for endless coastal views across the bay, and the pretty village itself. Be sure to put this on your selfie-stop list!

undergoing restoration indicated that its condition of wear and tear resulted from its extensive use as an accessory to dress or it could have also been inappropriately stored for many years. The Maltese fan is made from very fine silk cream colour Maltese lace, mounted on fifteen silver sticks including the two end sticks - the guards, that protect the fan when closed, both elegantly engraved with the Maltese cross in between flower motifs. The 13cm-wide semi-circular Maltese bobbin lace design is a typical 19th century ‘Maltese Blonde’. It has an elaborate design that follows both the fashion styles during the time of the British presence on the island, the influence of other laces and other craft-related designs and the influence of Art Nouveau that flourished throughout Europe. Its rich texture is worked by the fashionable guipure technique (motif patterns that are connected by bars instead of a mesh ground) that persisted even throughout the 20th century. The lace is worked in two parts - a border and an insertion which are then sewn together. The 5cm border is bizzilla tal-festuni. It incorporates some of the motifs synonymous in Maltese lace: the Maltese cross, the five-petal flower, C-scrolls and palm motifs some of which incorporate the renowned fat tallies, in Maltese known as moski. The 8cm insertion is bizzilla tal-balla. The Maltese cross motif in the centre, in between the mirror-image design of whole stitched flower motif variations are on a boll stitch ground, in Maltese known as punt tal-balla. This stitch, also synonymous with ecclesiastical lace designs, is a characteristic reseau formed by the intersection of triangles, a distinctive decorative elongated hexagonal mesh ground forming a diamond shape by four diagonal sides and in the case of this fan, with two vertical sides. This hand-held Maltese lace fan exhibited in the museum, as all other time-honoured Maltese lace pieces in any other collection is part of our decorative art patrimony and intangible cultural heritage.

The texture and flavour of artichokes are the perfect accompaniment to this rich and creamy risotto. The grated lemon zest at the end brings out the best of Mediterranean flavours; go on, give it a try!

ARTICHOKE, LEMON AND NUTMEG RISOTTO INGREDIENTS 5 freshly trimmed artichoke hearts 1 lemon Olive oil A small bunch of mint A stick of butter One finely chopped red onion 1 sprig of thyme 1 bay leaf 400gr of Arborio (or any risotto rice) 250ml of dry white wine 1.5lts of warm vegetable stock 80g of grated Parmesan Whole nutmeg METHOD FOR THE ARTICHOKE PURÉE Soak the artichoke hearts in acidulated water (1ltr water/juice of 1 lemon) for ten minutes and pat dry. In a saucepan melt a knob of butter over medium heat and sauté four of the hearts for two minutes. Chopping your hearts into chunks will quicken the process. Deglaze the pan with 50ml of wine, season with salt, pepper and lemon zest. Cover the artichokes with water, add a small bunch of mint and simmer until the artichokes are cooked through. Process everything to a purée, balance the seasoning to taste and set aside. METHOD FOR THE FRIED ARTICHOKE GARNISH Chop the remaining artichoke heart lengthwise and fry in olive oil until golden brown. Lay over kitchen roll, season with salt and pepper and set aside. METHOD FOR THE RISOTTO Set a deep and wide pan over low heat. Melt a knob of butter and sweat the onions until translucent. Add thyme, bay leaf and season with salt and pepper. Toast your rice in this base, increase the heat and deglaze the pan using the remaining wine. After the alcohol evaporates, remove the bay leaf and start adding stock a ladle at a time. Stir your rice keeping it just about submerged in the liquid as it cooks. Continue periodically stirring throughout to achieve a creamy risotto consistency. Halfway through the process stir in the artichoke purée. When the risotto is cooked, stir in the Parmesan and the remaining butter off the heat. Cover the pan and let it rest for a couple of minutes. At this point you can stir in another ladle of stock if you see that your risotto is slightly dry. Adjust your seasoning for one last time, plate your risotto and garnish with fried artichokes, lemon zest and freshly grated nutmeg. 61

CISK

KINNIE

Simonds Farsons Cisk plc is synonymous with a beer brewing tradition rooted in quality. At the base of this tradition are long-established skills of selecting nature’s best ingredients coupled with the expertise of skilled and dedicated brewers that ensure that a high standard of quality is maintained at every step in the brewing process. Over the years, this dedication has contributed to creating award-winning brews that so many have grown to appreciate. Cisk Lager, launched in 1929, is a golden-coloured, bottom fermented lager with a distinctive and well-balanced character with an alcohol content of 4.2%. The range also includes Cisk Export – a smooth, well-balanced and exceptional beer with a 5% alcohol content, Cisk Excel – a low carbohydrate beer, Cisk Chill – flavoured beer available in three flavours, Cisk Pilsner – a premium pilsner with an alcohol content of 5.5% and Cisk Strong – an outstanding extra-strong premium lager with a 9% alcohol content.

Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, is a unique tasting bitter-sweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs. Kinnie is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie a Mediterranean classic since 1952, loved by the local population and tourists. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zero-calorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced, as well as Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an intense orange flavour. The Kinnie range is available online at: amazon.co.uk kinnie.com

IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO C ATHIA MIFSUD BONNICI F L I G H T C A P TA I N

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLES? I have been working with Air Malta since 1998. I spent the first 12 years as a First Officer and the last 12 years as a Captain. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOUR JOB? Exciting, challenging and rewarding. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? Probably the biggest challenge of my job now is the uncertainty in the travel industry as the industry is closely affected by whatever goes on in the world. Also, it’s not easy trying to balance family life and working around a roster since we work all hours of the day. Now that the kids are older, it is a lot easier as they are very independent and don’t rely on me that much anymore. IS THERE A PARTICULAR EVENT OR MOMENT DURING YOUR CAREER WITH AIR MALTA WHICH YOU ARE PROUD OF AND FOND OF AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH OUR READERS? The proudest moment of my career was getting promoted to Flight Captain. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I always keep myself busy. I go swimming training early mornings whenever I can and if I’m not working, I go on long walks in the countryside and catch up with friends. There are so many beautiful treks around the Islands and I’m still discovering some of them! Whenever I can, I travel. I always have a holiday planned so it gives me something to look forward to. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? It has probably got to be rabbit stew, especially when eaten at one of the local specialty restaurants usually found in the limits of Mġarr or Baħrija. Pastizzi and ħobz biż-żejt are also delicious if I just feel like a quick meal. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? I’m not really fussy about music. I normally just put on the radio and listen to whatever is playing WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY? This is a tough question! I have travelled so much and seen so many amazing places around the world that it’s not easy to choose. For the scenery it would probably have to be The Azores or New Zealand. For something different, definitely Borneo. And for beaches Tahiti and the French Polynesia. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING MALTA? Sunset at Riviera beach. Trekking at Miġra l-Ferħa or Dingli Cliffs. Lunch at Għar Lapsi , Wied iż-Żurrieq or Marsaxlokk. A boat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. Valletta and Mdina for our cultural heritage.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

SMOKING

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

FACE MASKS The Airline requires all passengers to wear an approved medical or cloth face mask at all times, starting from boarding, for the duration of the flight, through to disembarkation. Passengers will not be allowed to board without a facemask. Masks should also be worn within the airport building, before and during check-in, upon arrival, when collecting baggage, and up to the point that a passenger leaves the airport building. As per the Government of Malta Legal Notice 402 of 2020, children under three (3) years of age and persons with severe cognitive, physical, mental, or respiratory impairments who have difficulties tolerating a mask as certified by a licensed medical practitioner are exempted from wearing masks. Certified individuals shall always carry the relevant medical certificate exempting them from wearing a mask. Passengers risk fines if they fail to comply.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
