Merħba,

As the month of Septembe r came to an end and nine months of 2022’s calendar year gone by, we are extremely pleased to have witnessed the fact that during each of the last four months (June –September), the Air Malta network operated at greater than 90% and October appears strongly on track to continue with the same trend.

Unfortunately, Amsterdam Schiphol and London Heathrow continue to be plagued by airport infrastructure and customer handling issues which have resulted in both airports continuing to impose capacity reductions on airlines, resulting in less seats being made available for sale out of both airports.

Our core Winter '22 schedule has already been on sale for several months. This Winter we will serve 15 major airports in key European cities, increasing our weekly rotations to 107 from 78 in Winter '21.

We have strengthened our product offering to Rome, Paris, and Munich - with 14 weekly flights to Rome FCO (daily; morning and evening), 12 weekly flights to Paris of which 8 to Charles De Gaulle and 4 to Orly, and 12 weekly flights to Munich (double daily except Thursdays and Saturdays).

We are pleased to confirm that Madrid will continue as a Winter operation twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays.

We have continued to expand our customer service product offering in our digital platfo rms. To facilitate customers with the ability to select real-time bank transfer payments as an option and alternative to credit card payment for bookings made through Airmalta.com, we have launched Air Malta Pay. This new payment option is now available to our online customers from all countries which we operate from (with the current exception of Malta and Switzerland).

We have also partnered with Cover Genius, the Insurtech for embedded insurance, to offer our global customers embedded travel protection directly from the Airmalta.com booking path.

By integrating with XCover, the global distribution platform of Cover Genius, we can offer our customers protection against trip cancellation through sickness or injury, inability to travel if diagnosed with Covid-19, emergency medical treatment and 24/7 assistance, baggage or electronics which are accidentally damaged or stolen as well as 24/7 customer support and easy online claims.

For more information about all our services and the latest news about Air Malta and our Summer and Winter flight schedule, please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly to your inbox.

Thank you for flying Air Malta. Enjoy this edition of Il-Bizzilla and stay safe.

FROM THE EDITOR...

Dear travellers,

Ever y season bears different fruit within the Maltese islands, and as we transition in October, Autumn in the islands hits a little later than our European counterparts. The change in seasons makes for an excellent time to explore on foot, without the scorching temp eratures that make it a challenging feat mid-summer.

October is, of course, the month of Halloween. Although the islands are deeply religious, there’s plenty of superstition and ghost tales to be shared, as Matthew Camilleri explores on page 26. But, if that’s not your bag, rest assured we have plenty of other fascinating features. Just check out Lyndsey Grima’s interview with Dario Genovese, and his latest music collaboration with the Maltese icon, Freddie Portelli.

As you may reasonably expect by now, there’s our island highlights, a sumptuous recipe, and our monthly star pick destination. This month we venture to the rural village of ĦażŻabbar in the south of Malta and our six top sights in nearby Marsaskala. Don’t miss the chance to visit the south of the islands and contrast the scenery with the north!

Wherever it is you are going, we hope this month’s edition of Il-Bizzilla brings some welcome knowledge, entertainment, and insight about our glorious islands.

Sit back, relax; you'll soon be there.

RURAL CHARM: Ż ABBAR

ŻABBAR IS YOUR TYPICAL MALTESE VILLAGE WITH ITS OLD CORE, LAVISH PARISH CHURCH, A TIGHTLY KNIT LOCAL COMMUNITY AND TWO COMPETING ANNUAL FEASTS IN SEPTEMBER WHICH ARE FERVENTLY CELEBRATED. A WALK AROUND THE VILLAGE WILL REALLY GIVE YOU AN INSIGHT OF TRADITIONAL VILLAGE LIFE.

If you are visiting the Three Cities – which you must – make time to walk up to Ħaż-Żabbar which lies just inland from the Three Cities and shares a common history.

Żabbar is one of the oldest and largest villages in Malta, emerging from Żejtun. It was established as its own parish in 1615 and raised to the status of a City by Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch in 1797, making it known also as Citta' Hompesch.

The triumphal arch on the main approach road from Paola, built by the residents as a city gate to commemorate the event, remains one of the most impressive landmarks of Żabbar. However, despite its size, Żabbar still retains its village-like atmosphere, with its many social clubs such as band clubs and sports clubs and surrounded by cultivated countryside and even a small stretch of coast in the southeast of Malta.

It is thought that the name of Żabbar is derived from the locality's agricultural background, whether it is from the pruning industry (tiżbor in Maltese) prevalent in the area, or the Aloe Vera plant (sabbara in Maltese).

Ħaż-Żabbar was used as a camp by the Ottoman armies in the beginning of the Great Siege and later, it was used as a base by the Maltese when they rose against the French around 1800. To this day, you can still see cannon balls from the French era in walls in the older parts of the city (I know this for a fact as when I first moved to

Malta, the house of character I rented had the scars of the cannon balls in our courtyard).

Some of these were recovered, especially from the old church’s dome and are now displayed in the church museum. At the other end of the town stands the Notre Dame Gate - one of seven gates built into the 9km-long Cottonera Lines. Also known as Porta della Maria Vergine delle Grazie, Ħaż-Żabbar Gate and Bieb is-Sultan, the gate was planned to serve as the main entrance into the fortified conglomeration when approached from the east. It stands in the middle of Notre' Dame Curtain from which it takes its name and is flanked by Notre' Dame Bastion on its right and St James Bastion on the left facing the ancient town of Żabbar.

This grand gate remains to this day the highest point in Cottonera. From its towering roof one can enjoy breath-taking vistas of most of the island, making it ideal for the relay of military signals between the eastern coastal defences and Valletta.

Its architec tural design follows that of the high-baroque period at which time it was built. It is lavishly decorated with Corinthian pilasters, heavy mouldings and facias, symmetrical niches and apertures.

Over the centuries it has served as the main gate for the region, a military barracks, a gun powder magazine, a chapel and an air raid refuge. Throughout World War One, during and following the debacle at Gallipoli in 1915, thousands of wounded allied troops

DESTINATION

were brought to Malta for treatment and convalescence. Some of these were accommodated at the nearby Cottonera Hospital (now a private school) built in 1870 and at Notre Dame Gate, when no space was left in the hospital.

Legend has it that the bust of Grand Master Fra Nicolas Cottoner found at the gate "looks" at a spot where treasure lies buried. The hoard is said to have been left behind by pirates during one of their many incursions under the reign of the Knights of St John. This gate now houses the headquarte rs of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna - the Malta Heritage Trust. It is available for visiting and includes a visit to the former Cottonera Military Hospital and parts of the Cottonera Lines.

Another historical highlight of Ħaż-Żabbar is the Parish Church of Our Lady of Graces, which has one of the most monumental

and ornate baroque exteriors on the Islands. The Ħaż-Żabbar Sanctuary Museum under the ch urch houses an interesting collection showing the link between the Order of St John and the institution of the church.

Other more obscure items on display include the remnants of an aircraft, which on October 14, 1975, exploded over Żabbar, with many of its parts falling on the school and in the main street of the village. The fact that the accident claimed the life of only one resident, is considered nothing short of a miracle since the event could have translated into a national disaster had a series of events been only slightly different. Naturally, this miracle was attributed to the patron of the village, il-Madonna tal-Grazzja

Also on display are several paintings and other artefacts including a precious painting by the famous Mattia Preti.

ST THOMAS BAY

St Thomas Bay is found on the outskirts of Marsaskala. This sandy beach is of a reasonable size and is surrounded by cliffs on the majority of the bay. Frequented by fishermen, this little inlet is thought of as a favourite amongst locals.

MARSASKALA PARISH CHURCH

Wied il-Għajn, also known as Marsaskala, became a parish in 1949, and the small church of St Anne, the property of the Senglea Chapter became the parish church. The present church was built in 1953, it is located in the harbour area of the town. The patron saint of Marsaskala is St Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. The locals’ devotion to St Anne goes back quite a long time, and it is still a tradition to celebrate an annual religious feast, usually on the last Sunday of July.

SALT PANS

The Marsaskala coastline is beautiful, to say the least. Here you can find grooves dug deeply into the rock used to gather salt, also known as salt pans. The irregular shapes of the pans fitting together like intricate patchwork make an incredible sight. They are believed to date back to the era of the Romans.

THE PROMENADE

Marsaskala promenade is bustling with activity. There are so many kiosks and eateries that you can visit while walking by the sea. If you're looking to step away from the crowd, why not find a secluded bench and bask in the warm sun.

SEA VIEWS

Whether you’re looking to relax after a long day or simply absorb the rays of the sun as it tucks itself back into the horizon, the sea views of Marsaskala are a great place to call it a day. Alternatively, wake up before the sun does and watch the sun rise upon the Marsaskala seascape.

ST THOMAS TOWER

St Thomas Tower is yet another watchtower that can be found in Marsaskala. This large bastioned watchtower was built in 1614 and forms part of the Wignacourt Towers and served as an artillery battery in its time. Grab a shot of this towerit’s quite something.

TOP TIPS FOR EXPERIENCING

A MEMORABLE DIVING HOLIDAY IN GOZO

GOZO’S APPEAL AS A HOLIDAY DESTINATION HAS MANY FACETS. DIVING IS ONE OF THEM AND IT IS AN AREA THAT OPENS UP THE REALM OF AQUATIC UNDERWATER ADVENTURES THAT LEADS TO THE DISCOVERY OF TREASURES OF THE DEEP. EVERYBODY CAN ENJOY SNORKELLING, BUT IF YOU’RE AFTER MORE MAGIC, YOU NEED TO CONSIDER SCUBA DIVING IN GOZO.

What’s more is that with the sea temperature rarely dropping below 14ºC, diving in Gozo is possible almost all year-round. In fact, diving is particularly popular in autumn.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when planning your scuba diving holiday in Gozo:

1. Gozo’s a top diving destination island. Despite its small size and literal invisibility on a geographical world map, Gozo is a colossus when it comes to diving opportunities. Yet a bigger plus point of choosing Gozo as your diving destination is that Gozo offers so much more – culture, adventure, history and arts. There is a lot to do when you are not diving. Similarly, if your family or friends are not into diving, they can still enjoy a holiday in Gozo as you pursue the underwater world of the many diving sites in Malta and Gozo.

2. If you’re planning your first diving trip to Malta, your first question might be where is it best to stay for a diving holiday. In Gozo, the sea is never far away but you’ll find most of the diving schools, dive shops and dive centres located close to the bays in places like Xlendi and Marsalforn. Naturally, if you choose to stay in a seaside village, the sea will be at your

doorstep and you’ll would not need extra transport to join the diving expeditions organized by the dive centres in Gozo. Another bonus is that you'll be close to the seaside restaurants, which are the perfect spot where to end the day.

3. Gozo is home to many certified and professional diving clubs and sch ools. If you’re already a diver, it is vital that you have the appropriate scuba diving certification, papers and insurance in place. A quick check with local dive centres will surely provide the answers. Don’t fret if you’re new to diving! Dive centres in Gozo can handle anything from lodging, airport transfers and transport, to diving lessons for different ages, professional diving instructors, along with all sorts of diving equipment needed for your scuba diving adventures. Gozo’s a great place to learn to scuba dive. The dive schools and centres are well geared in this field and also provide pro fessional diving courses that lead to scuba diving certification.

4. Diving requires a certain level of fitness. If you’re new to diving, make sure that you’re watching your fitness levels and if you have any medical condition, it is advisable to bring it up before booking your dive stints to avoid disappointment.

18 GOZO

5. Check out the variety of dive sites that Gozo offers. Each dive site has its characteristics. Think about what your favourite type of scuba diving adventure woild be. Maybe you enjoy cavediving or wreck-diving or deep-sea diving. In Gozo, you’ll find a variety of dive sites that have different kinds of appeal. From venturing into the abyss at places like Reqqa Point, to cavediving at Billinghurst Cave, diving the wrecks off the coast of Ix-Xatt l-Aħmar, and diving into the mesmerizing ethereal light of the Comino waters, there are different kinds of adventures to be enjoyed and a myriad of creatures to encounter. For example, Mġarr ix-Xini is the place to mark for a chance encounter with a seahorse and beneath the surface of Dwejra, you might catch sight of the mysterious pyrosomoes colonies. If you‘re after more mystery, book a night dive.

6. The Azure Window might be gone, but diving the Blue Hole which is located next to where the Azure Window once stood,

7. If you’re keen on memories and photography you’ll need an underwater camera as you discover Gozo’s diving sites and underwater paradise. If you’re bringing your own camera, make sure that you have tested it at home but do note that dive centres and dive shops have photographic equipment for hire.

There’s no doubt among the international diving community that scuba diving in Gozo is a fantastic experience. The visibility is amazing and the variety of dive sites, ensure that a diving holiday in Gozo will be truly rewarding. Both the novice and the seasoned diver will be leaving the island not only with fascinating memories of blue but most likely with the intention of a repeat holiday.

is like the holy grail for keen divers. Once labelled by Jacques Yves Cousteau as Europe’s top diving site, the Blue Hole in Dwejra, is a spectacular dive.

AUTUMN EVENTS IN GOZO

Make no mistake – autumn in Gozo is everything but boring. As the summer heat ebbs away and the Gozitan countryside soaks the first rains, Gozo is reborn. The countryside will dress up a bright carpet of green. The air gets cooler and everyone agrees that it is an ideal time for escapades into the countryside and active adventures that are focused on fun as opposed to surviving the sweltering summer heat. In this sense, autumn in Gozo is blissful and the sea temperature is still warm enough for a dip. Beyond all that, autumn is the stage for many Gozo events.

Autumn has the magnificent echo of the Gozo Opera. For years the Gozo Opera has been an outstanding national event every autumn. The two opera houses Astra theatre and Aurora theatre, located on the same street in the main city of the island of Gozo will each stage an opera. The fiery rivalry between the two opera houses means that opera aficionados are never disappointed by the quality of the productions. This year the season ‘Opera is Gozo’ will be a month-long programme of opera-related events.

On Saturday 15th October, the Aurora theatre will stage Verdi’s triumphant masterpiece, the AIDA. This year’s post-pandemic season has been long awaited af ter the two-year lull, and this AIDA will be a Zeffirelli-designed production that promises a high-calibre show. At the end of October (Thursday 27th and Saturday 29th), it will b e time for Carmen, Goerge Bizet’s fiery opera. The story of the femme fatale gypsy has always worked its magic with the audiences. Whether you’re an enthusiastic opera devotee or a newbie in the world of opera, this production will be rewarding.

The Ewfonija Grand Operatic Concert that will be held on the 8th of October at the Citadel Ditch will be one of the first events in Gozo this autumn. Spanning over two months, Festival Mediterranea, a production by Astra Theatre will present a programme featuring a variety of events.

On the 14th of October, a spectacular evening awaits those who attend the Symphony of Lights in the main square of the hamlet of Santa Luċija. The music by the Saint Gregory Band accompanied by fireworks and light spectacle, amid the candles and torches in the square will evoke a magical atmosphere.

The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady in Xagħra will be the stage for the second edition of Michelangelo & Friends Sacred Concert on Friday

21st October. During the same weekend, Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd October, you can also enjoy the Aurora International Folk Festival held at the Citadel in Victoria. Marking the end of October events in Gozo, is another musical evening - From the Beatles to U2 will be held at the Aurora Theatre.

If you are in Gozo on the 9th of October, do not miss out the Fjakkolata on Għar Ilma hill, where hundreds of fire torches will light up the hill. This is a sight to behold from various points on the island, while down in the main square of Santa Luċija, one will be able to indulge in food and music in a traditional setting.

During the weekend of the 14th to 16th of October, families can enjoy Gozo’s great outdoors at San Dimitri Chapel in Għarb where the Kite and Wind Festival will be held.

Gozo marks the end of October with the Mixgħela tal-Qaddisin, an All Saints’ Day celebration with evocative candlelight installations in front of every parish church in Gozo. This is also coinciding with the Sweet Tooth Festival, held on 30th October, when Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria will be transformed into a beckoning candy land with sweets and dessert stalls.

In terms of art, autumn in Gozo will not disappoint. During October and November, Il-Ħaġar Museum, in the core of the Victoria will hold The Q’eros: Beyond the Clouds, an exclusive photography exhibition by Italian photographer, Alessandro Bergamini, the winner of the ‘Travel Photographer of the Year 2021’. In this exhibition, Bergamini features photos of a trip to the Andes in Peru.

In November, Gozo will host several music events too. On Saturday 19th November, the Aurora Theatre will present A Night with Andrew Lloyd Webber. This gala concert will feature masterpieces by Andrew Lloyd Webber. During the same weekend, the Għaqda Mużikali Viżitazzjoni will hold a festival spread over two evenings and morning /early afternoon. The event, Make Music Great, will be held in Għarb.

By then it will be time for Christmas on the island of Gozo and as the air starts to get chilly, it will be perfect for the opening of Gozo’s calendar of events for the Christmas season. On the 26th of November, Gozo will officially light the street Christmas lights for the yuletide season that lasts until the 6th of January.

PORTRAIT

OF AN ARTIST

IMMANUEL MIFSUD

IMMANUEL MIFSUD IS ONE OF MALTA'S MOST CELEBRATED LIVING AUTHORS, WHOSE WRITINGS I GREW UP STUDYING AND REFERRING TO WITH GREAT ADMIRATION.

This latest venture in his career sparked a profound intrigue in me as I and many have never known Immanuel to be a director, or have known much about his involvement in the theatre scene locally, which lead me down a rabbit hole of curiosity and questions which this award-winning poet and and writer took the time to generously answer.

Various books of his have been translated into different languages namely his 2010 book, In the Name of the Father (and of the Son), which has been translated into 10 languages after winning the European Union Prize for Literature.

When he's not hidden away in some room writing, you'll probably find Immanuel teaching literature at the University of Malta, but in the coming months you'll find him back at the theatre directing Teatru Malta's upcoming production ‘L-Għarusa’ - a free adaptation of Ġużè Diacono's original one-act play on the occasion of Diacono's 20th anniversary from death. Here, Immanuel shares his thoughts on his return to the director's chair in his own words…

"The last piece of work I directed was Alfred Buttigieg’s drama, ‘Ippermettili Nitlaq’, if I’m not mistaken, in 2008. Then, I was in the middle of finishing up my doctorate, work, and lots of travelling, so I had to put theatre on the back burner. There was also possibly a bit of weariness and disappointment: I worked for many years with Teatru Marta Kwitt, which was a very intensive project that saw us locked up in the theatre from Monday to Saturday, during all seasons. Then the disappointment that the project had to stop ... all of this has possibly resulted in me stopping theatre when I did. However, after directing Ippermettili Nitlaq, I wrote two pieces for ‘Staġun Teatru Malti’ and I also wrote ‘Daqsxejn ta’ Requiem lil Leli’ which was staged by Theatre Anon. This last experience was truly magical and reignited that thirst for theatre in me, for all that happens backstage, for the process from the very first time you get the script in your hands to the eve of the first time the curtain opens. As a writer, my work is solitary: long nights sitting at my desk, staring at a white laptop screen and seeing it slowly filling up with words. Theatre is a process contrary to this: you work with a group of people, you see your vision being shared with others and,

as is my direction style (with the utmost respect to the actors as co-creators) being taken up by others – being somewhat stolen –and watching it ultima tely become theirs. You, as a director, contrary to the writer who moves in the process of filling (with words), become empty as your ideas, which you would have imagined and in the notes you take as you think, are absorbed by the actors who, ultimately, will be performing and bringing the piece to life.

After some years of absence, I feel as excited as I did long ago when I had directed a piece for Ateatru (Tignè) and as I continued to feel every time I started a theatrical project. The same excitement but also the same anxiety as soon as you realise you are carrying a great responsibility. That moment when you see a group of actors looking at you, waiting for you to start working with them, and that moment when you first see the audience entering the theatre, are two moments which are as frightening as they are magical.

In the case of ‘L-Għarusa’, aside from these fears I mentioned, there is also the responsibility of working on a drama of a prominent author, and we are working on the drama precisely

on the 20th anniversary of his death and on his 110th birthday. Moreover, what we will be staging is an adaptation of the original work, also because I’ve always believed that any direction should be an adaptation. Obviously, there is always the possibility that the audience who knows the piece before seeing it might not approve of the adaptation it is given. Therefore, there is a bit more tension than usual.

But, I’m very happy with Teatru Malta’s organisation and with the actors I’ll be working with: four actors with different experiences who I’m sure will be put under the script’s spell and will be enamoured with the story of this particular bride."

‘L-Għarusa’, a free adaptation of Ġużè Diacono's original by Immanuel Mifsud, will be staged at the Knight's Armoury in Birgu, co-produced with Heritage Malta and supported by Fondazzjoni Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali and the Arts Council Malta between the 21st and 31st October 2022.

GHOSTS OF MALTA

EACH YEAR, AS HALLOWEEN APPROACHES, MANY REVIVE THEIR INTEREST IN THE PARANORMAL, INCLUDING IN MALTA, WHERE ONE FINDS NO SHORTAGE OF GHOST STORIES CONNECTED TO THE NUMEROUS OLD, HISTORIC BUILDINGS THAT HAVE OVER THE CENTURIES BEEN WITNESS TO MANY A DARK AND TRAGIC TALE.

Many of these stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and have in time become part of our folklore, while the list of buildings said to be infested with ghosts is not a short one, especially in the old towns and villages. Here we explore stories connected to three different historical cities.

COURTS OF JUSTICE BUILDING - VALLETTA

This building stands on the site of an old palace which was destroyed during World War Two. But in the 1930s, it had housed a police station, where, according to many, strange events were regularly experienced. A policeman was tugged violently out of bed whilst sleeping there, while another regularly heard the noise of jangling chains whenever he lay

down on his bed, only for the noises to stop as soon as he rose up to check. Cold spots were frequently reported, while many saw the apparition of a monk. One night, a vagrant who had been locked in a cell was heard screaming, and when a policeman went to check on him, he witnessed the monk hovering in front of the cell, before floating directly towards him, and passing right through his body, leaving him petrified and shaking. Interestingly, when in the 1960s the building’s bombed-out ruins were demolished to make way for the current structu re, a skeleton of a man who had seemingly been once bricked up inside a wall was discovered, leading to speculation that it was connected to the hauntings, although his identity is still a mystery.

ST PHILIP'S CHURCH - SENGLEA

Many years ago, an elderly lady used to attend mass here as soon as the church opened each morning. Although the first service started at 5am, she usually arrived early, taking the opportunity to chat with other churchgoers before the doors were unlocked.

One morning, she arrived even earlier than usual, but despite it still being dark outside, the church was already open. Deciding to wait inside for her friends, the lady was surprised to be the only one there, and even more so when a priest approached the altar to start the service, notwithstanding the fact that it was at least half an hour too early. In the dim lighting, she could not see the priest properly but stayed until the end. It was only then, when the priest turned to face her, that she realised that where his face should be, there was only a skull!

As he vanished before her, she tried not to scream, and felt herself going faint just as keys could be heard unlocking the church door. Her friends wondered how she had managed to enter the locked, darkened and otherwise empty building.

VILHENA PALACE - MDINA

I n the 1970s, a British couple visiting Mdina were taking photos

with an instant camera in the courtyard of this palace, when they claimed to have caught something unexpected. In one of the images, there appeared to be what looked like the figure of a headless girl, wearing a bridal gown. Concluding that they must have caught a ghost on camera, they were probably unaware that there has long existed an old legend that could explain what they had captured.

Many centuries ago, a young lady called Katerina, who was deeply in love with a man she was soon to marry, was assaulted by a knight whose advances she had refused. In self-defence, she fatally stabbed him with his own dagger, leading to her being condemned to death. But just before she was beheaded, she was granted one last request. Romantic and faithful till the end, she asked that she be married to her beloved. Her wish was granted, and the wedding ceremony was allowed to proceed, followed shortly after by her execution. Since then, many claim to have accidentally captured her ghost on camera when taking photos around the city. Perhaps she still wanders the streets of Mdina, trying to recount to visitors her tragic tale.

D’AMATO RECORDS

A MUSIC LOVER’S PARADISE

Located on St John's Street, Valletta, you simply can’t miss the distinct Nipper the dog sign (His Master’s Voice) just above the beloved D’Amato Records shop.

Dubbed as the oldest record store in the world, there’s something quite special about it. In a few words, I would describe D’Amato as a treasure trove for people from all walks of life. From the moment you walk through its doors, you’re instantly greeted by an extensive collection of CDs, DVDs as well as vinyl records by some of the greatest musicians of our time. From rare titles by Queen, Elton John, David Bowie, ABBA, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and The Beatles to modernday music, there is something for all those who share a love of music.

And on that note, Anthony D’Amato, one of the current fifthgeneration owners of the shop, takes me back to where their story began. Hailing from Naples, Italy, Anthony’s great-greatgrandfather Giovanni D’Amato, first set up the business in 1885 as a furniture shop. Nevertheless, other plans were in store for D’Amato.

Some documentation suggests that music trading began in the 1890s. From that moment on, the shop sealed its fate as a business that would stay within the family. After Giovanni, the torch was passed on to Antonio D’Amato (2nd generation and the person whom the shop is named after), William D’Amato (3rd generation), William’s sons (Anthony, John, Joseph, and George) and finally their children (Anthony, William and Stephen).

Given that D’Amato Records has been in business for five generations, it is clear that it did something right from the get-go. Looking back at the late 1920s, Anthony tells me that Antonio started recording the first ever Maltese songs with His Master’s Voice (HMV) so that people could have something they could relate to. Needless to say, this was quite an achievement for the shop, since it was the sole local distributor of the prestigious record label in Britain.

Seeing as this proved to be a huge success, William’s sons continued to record more Maltese songs on vinyl in the 1970s, including Freddy

Whilst regular clients from the 60s still come to D’Amato Records every week, Anthony says that people of all ages are now buying records. He explains that when buying vinyl in particular, you’re left with something that you can treasure for years to come. “Music brings back memories; people associate songs with loved ones or different eras of their life.” More importantly, music is there to make our lives a little brighter.

With this in mind, Anthony tells me that although the shop faced some very challenging times, including two World Wars, the Spanish Flu, recessions and even a decrease in sales with the rise of the internet and online shopping, D’Amato remained unstoppable. The family never felt the need to close its doors to the public. On the contrary, they continued to reach out to their clients, particularly during the Second World War. Remarkably, D’Amato was one of the only shops that had been spared from demolition in Valletta and remained open during those troubling times. Undoubtedly, that meant something to the family and their mission to their community.

In fact, in a letter penned by Antonio D’Amato during the first few months of the Second World War, two gramophones, 24 records, and tins of needles were donated to the wards at the Military Hospital in Mtarfa. Adding to this, a short excerpt from it outlines everything the D’Amato family has stood for throughout all these years: “Even in the early period of hostilities when Valletta was almost entirely evacuated with the consequent paralysis of commerce, I was one of the few businessmen who refused to be cowed by Italian attacks into closing down the shop and did my

Rain or shine, D’Amato Records continues to welcome locals and people from all over the world to this very day. In fact, throughout its 137 years in business, its shutters only went down for a mere six weeks following the measures that were put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When I ask Anthony about some other fond memories of the shop, he immediately mentions his late father Anthony, who sadly passed away last year. “He was the goalkeeper of the business”, Anthony says. Although business is going strong, Anthony admits that it’s been incredibly difficult to carry on without him.

Anthony tells me that the whole family was touched by the outpouring amount of support they received shortly after his dad’s passing. Described by many as a softly-spoken, kindhearted and patient gentleman, Anthony D’Amato (also known as Tony) still lives on in the hearts of his family and many people who used to buy records from him back in the day.

I hope that D’Amato Records will continue to delight music lovers for another 137 years (and more!). Anthony then ends our interview with quite an interesting coincidence; “There are three speeds in records – 78s, 45s and 33s. I was born in 1978, my dad in 1945 and the difference between the two is 33. All in all, it seems I was destined to be in this world.”

LEGENDARY VINTAGE

MUSIC UNFOLDING

FREDDIE PORTELLI’S, MA KELLEKX TORT, IS COMING BACK WITH A BANG. LYNDSEY GRIMA SPEAKS TO DARIO GENOVESE, FORMER FRONTMAN OF THE BUSKER, WHO COLLABORATED WITH THE LOCAL LEGEND ON THE RECREATION OF THIS 1960S HIT SINGLE, COMING OUT LATER THIS MONTH.

Local singer/songwriter Dario Genovese started his eventful music journey at just 13 years of age. As a young boy, Dario remembers lining up teddy bears and other soft toys at his parents’ home to act as his audience, while he performed cover song versions of his favourite artists. Fast forward to Dario at 20 years of age, he formed his previous band, The Busker in 2012, in which he was the band’s frontman for eight years, releasing two albums while also performing at many festivals both locally and overseas.

Two years ago, Dario started his venture as a solo artist, which has flourished into incredible successes such as The Library Tapes which consisted of live sessions, performed at the National Library, in collaboration with four special guests, an audio-visual EP titled Tea, and two new singles including a Christmas release last year which was a duet with Rebecca Julia Mifsud. Dario is now getting ready to release a song with none other than the local legend, Freddie Portelli.

“I started my solo career during the pandemic which proved to be a blessing in disguise. When I was with the band, we played nonstop at v arious festivals and events, which was great at the time. However, the pandemic gave me a chance to explore myself as an artist, especially now that I had decided to go at it alone. It gave me the opportunity to discover the direction I wanted to head in.”

Although folk lies in Dario’s music roots, he wouldn’t define all his music as being in the folk genre.

“Not all of my songs are folk. I have released other songs in different styles. I would say the term ‘vintage’ is what best defines me and my music. People who follow my music appreciate the fact that I do not simply produce tunes to keep up with the trends or for my songs to be radio worthy. I do what I do because I like the style. The popularity of the songs and/o r my music is a response to what I do.”

36 MUSIC

However, while Dario’s style is vintage, he’s fully aware of today’s current audience so he tries to balance out different styles.

“Of course, I was born in this era, and I am inspired by artists who still stay true to their roots and try to blend in vintage with what is considered modern nowadays. I want to sound vintage, but I do not only want to recreate what was done in the 1960s, for example. I’m normally inspired by the vintage aspect during the songwriting phase while the modern aspect comes out in the production stage to make it sound fresher.”

Dario admits that the older he grows, the more critical he gets with himself and his songwriting process.

“I think this is also happening because I have written quite a few songs now and I always want to go a step further. If a song sounds similar to something that I have written before, I don’t want to produce it. This process takes up most of my time – trying to

write something to please myself first! When I write a song that I like, I then talk to my producer to get the ball rolling. Most times, I work with Matthew James Borg. I give him reference songs and the direction that I see this so ng taking and we build it together in the studio.”

Dario’s upcoming song is a collaboration with legend Freddie Portelli who needs no introduction! The collaboration will feature a recreation of a Freddie Portelli song, released in the 60s, called Ma Kellekx Tort

“It was a very popular song in his time. I worked with Freddie Portelli before when I was still with The Busker, and we became good friends. I’ve been going to his house for around five years now, not only to write songs but also to catch up with one another. It’s more of a bonding session when we meet up! Freddie’s music is a huge inspiration to me, and I view him as on e of my biggest role models.”

38 MUSIC

Dario explains that originally, they were going to work on another song together. However, when Freddie suggested working on Ma Kellekx Tort, he immediately loved the idea and jumped on that opportunity. At the time, he was working on another song called Sophia, which was released in May. The recreation of Ma Kellekx Tort will now come out in October.

“I feel that although rock’n’roll is not my genre, it is still a big inspiration to me. Freddie Portelli’s songs are not all rock’n’roll, but the inspiration of sound and its vibe is what inspires me the most.”

Legends like Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles are some of Dario’s biggest music inspirations, together with more current bands like The Lumineers and The Killers.

“I have no other collaborations in the pipeline but locally I would love to collaborate with The New Victorians. It would be a dream come true to work with their powerful duo dynamic.”

Dario’s unique factor is that he does not try to follow trends. He writes what he likes and what he was brought up listening to.

“Whoever chooses to listen to my music knows that he is expecting a certain style. I believe that what I lose from not following a trend, I gain by having people who follow me because they genuinely like my vibe.”

Besides his collaboration with Freddie Portelli, Dario is working on other original songs that will eventually form part of an EP.

“Sophia was the first single from this upcoming EP. There is no name to it yet because I’m still in the process of writing all the songs. I’m aiming to release this project next year and it will be my first EP as a solo artist. Being in a position to release my own music has been my biggest achievement to date – young Dario, singing in front of his teddy bear crowd would be so proud!”

Freddie’s music is a huge inspiration to me, and I view him as one of my biggest role models.

LOST GARDEN: THE SOVEREIGN’S GARDEN AND THE BELVEDERE

ĠNIEN IS-SULTA N (MALTESE FOR THE SOVEREIGN’S GARDEN), WAS BUILT BY GRAND MASTER LASCARIS (1636-1657) IN 1642 AFTER HE HAD REQUISITIONED A SITE NEAR PORTA DEL MONTE TO BUILD A SUMMER RESIDENCE WITH A BAROQUE GARDEN DESIGNED BY THE ARCHITECT FRANCESCO BUONAMICI (1596–1677).

The baroque garden which was then called Il Giardino della Marina (Italian for Marina Garden), included a number of fruit trees and two elaborate fountains. This land was part of a larger development which Lascaris had initiated on the marina waterfront, between Ta’ Liesse Church and the area below the Capuchin’s monastery, to bui ld a series of warehouses meant to support the growth of mercantile activity in Malta. Below the garden and the Belvedere, there were also Neptune’s fountain attributed to Leone Leoni, the Church of Our Lady of Liesse and the Del Monte Gate. The whole sight must have been stunning to look at when entering the Grand Harbour by boat and would surely have been the talk of the town for many foreign visitors after seeing such a magnificent waterside.

The sc ene has been depicted in several watercolours, engravings and paintings from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century.

Even as late as 18 40, Augustin François Lemaître (1797-1870) in Lacroix’s L’Univers pittoresque, imm ortalized it in a steel engraving titled Cité Valette.

The whole area was razed to the ground by the British to be replaced with Lascaris Battery in 1854, intended to protect the inner reaches o f the Grand Harbour and the approaches to the newly-built naval dockyard. Early proposals for the work, dated 1853, are signed by Col. Ringler Thompson, then Commanding Royal Engineers. Today, the following gardens can be visited in Valletta and the surrounding area: Herbert Ganado Gardens, The Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Lower Barrakka Gardens, and the Hastings Gardens."

FAMILY DAYS OUT IN MALTA

WHEN IT COMES TO FAMILY DAYS OUT IN MALTA, THERE ARE OPTIONS FOR ALL. YOU COULD CHOOSE TO SPEND A DAY IN ONE OF ITS TOP-RATED VISITOR ATTRACTIONS, OR EXPLORE A WIDER AREA AND THE HISTORY, HERITAGE, AND FUN IN THE SUN IT HAS TO OFFER. HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE SUGGESTIONS.

ESPLORA SCIENCE CENTRE, KALKARA

We had to give a mention to one of Malta’s newest attractions, the Esplora Science Centre. Easily reachable by bus from Valletta, or hop-on hop-off tours, it’s an interactive attraction which will open up the wonders of science, whatever your age. There are a host of science and tech exhibits, planetarium area, and workshops themed around space or science topics.

EXPLORE COMINO

Famous for its crystal-clear waters in the Blue Lagoon, and appearances in films such as Troy and the Count of Monte Cristo, Comino may be one of the smallest Maltese islands, but it stands out from the crowd as a day trip option.

Getting to the island is easy with daily ferry services running from the ferry terminals of Marfa and Ċirkewwa (Malta) and Mġarr (Gozo). There are also a number of tourist boats running sightseeing trips that stop off at the island.

Book an early ferry to enjoy swimming or snorkelling before the peak crowds arrive, then take some time to explore the rest of the island. Lunch options to suit all tastes are available from street food trucks up the hill from the Blue Lagoon.

The entire island is walkable, so take some time with the family to enjoy the picturesque views, spot the local flora and fauna, and stop off at some other points of interest. These include the quieter Santa Marija Bay, its caves popular with divers, and the watch tower dating from 1618.

THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF MDINA

Immerse yourself in the fascinating and sometimes dark side of Malta’s past with a day exploring Mdina. Less than half an hour from the Maltese capital Valletta, it’s the perfect place to explore the varied history and heritage of the island.

A former ammunition store, the Casa Magazzini building now operates as the immersive Knights of Malta attraction. Uncover 250 years of rule by the Knights of St John, and the contributions they made to architecture, military engineering, and medicine in walkthrough tableaux and a 3D audio-visual show.

If you’re visiting with older children, why not venture into the dark underground cells and chambers of the Malta Dungeons? Located beneath the Magisterial Vilhena palace building, just inside the main entrance to Mdina, this attraction tells stories from the Roman, Arab, Byzantine, and French Periods. With a history of executions, torture, and crime, you can expect a touch of realism in the tableaux.

For a final trip underground before heading back to your hotel, take a quick trip to the Catacombs in Rabat. This network of underground cells, chambers, and passageways unlocks stories from the Arab, Byzantine, French and Roman periods in Malta’s history, and the interconnecting cemeteries are early evidence of Christianity on the island.

to nearby beaches, so why not experience the thrills of all the water slides, then top up your tan on the beach, or relax on a promenade.

Splash and Fun Water Park in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq has something for all, from lazy rivers, quiet pools, and sunbathing areas, to thrilling water slides like the ‘Black Hole’. With a wave pool, diving pool, kids splash area, and family slides, a trip can be as active as you want to make it. Check out the high and low season opening dates and times before you travel, and if you want double the fun you could combine a waterpark visit with a trip to a nearby beach.

Opt for the small but popular St George’s Bay and you’ll be on the doorstep of the restaurants, shopping, and bars that form the Paceville Entertainment District. Balluta Bay also wins visitors for its beautiful clear waters, which are a haven for divers, swimmers, and snorkelers. Many of the beach resorts are close to public transport links, so it’ll be easy to explore and pick the right beach and amenities for you.

MELLIEĦA AND POPEYE VILLAGE

With a mix of year-round family fun, international cuisine, and a laid-back village feel head to the Mellieħa area in Northern Malta. It m ay b e smaller and laid back than some areas, but this beautiful area is a great place to spend a day. From clear waters and sandy beaches within walking distance of the village to the Popeye Village film set and entertainment complex, there is something for all ages to enjoy.

Feast on a choice of Lebanese, Japanese, British and traditional Maltese food before exploring some more. With Mellieħa’s air raid shelter, panoramic views at St Agatha’s Watchtower, and Għadira Bay, Malta’s longest beach within easy reach, a day here will bring unforgettable memories.

Whether you opt for one of our favourite family days out or create your own itinerary, fun and fascination are guaranteed for every generati on.

THE EUROPEAN MARITIME AND FISHERIES FUND [EMFF] 2014-2020 IN MALTA

SOME SUCCESS STORIES TARGETING SUSTAINABILITY

The European Commission had approved Malta’s Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 funding period [and the related N+3 implementation extension until 2023] back in 2015, allowing Malta to strategically invest more than €22.60mn in EMFF share. The said investment package supports smart green fisheries and aquaculture, whilst strengthening the economic

viability of businesses in the sector. The Programme supports fishing communities by improving infrastructure and equipping fishers with new skills and opportunities to help them diversify their business models. In fact the Fund has co-financed over 30 projects involving various governmental stakeholders, aquaculture enterprises and individual fishers.

1. CONSTRUCTION OF A BREAKWATER AT QREJTEN POINT IN THE PORT OF MARSAXLOKK

This project primarily involved [i] the construction of a new 110m breakwater at Qrejten point in the designated port of Marsaxlokk using almost 6000 tonnes of concrete and additional large boulders of upper coralline limestone hewn from the RabatDingli uplands, together with [ii] the installation of maintenance and navigational amenities. The intent is to strengthen the general coastal defences against strong southerly currents in Marsaxlokk Bay, enabling a safer mooring shelter for fishers thus creating a more sustainable business through risk reduction. This

approach will enable fishers to dedicate more time and effort to other profitable activities. The project is contributing towards a vulnerable economic area of the Maltese economy since local fisheries are artisanal and seasonal, generating limited employment and limited interest from young generations. Site interventions were executed with the aim of doing the least harm to the natural environment. The new breakwater is accessible to the public via dedicated pathways and existing roadways. It caters for all fishers operating from the islands’ foremost fishing village irrespective of gender, disabilities etc. See previous page for photos.

2. UPGRADING OF THE FISHERIES INFRASTRUCTURE OF GOZO

The focus of this project was on modernising fishers’ facilities located within the designated fishing ports of both Mġarr and Xlendi, together with the introduction of new amenities crucial for vessel maintenance. Through this investment, Gozitan fishers are benefiting from a much better and safer working environment thus encouraging the said cohort to further invest in their operations and in the same process improve the quality of their catch. The final target of this investment is to retain jobs in fisheries, preventing the shrinking of such an important sector to the local economy and the Gozitan way of life.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF OPERA

BY RECOGNISING LOCAL TALENT

LYNDSEY GRIMA SPEAKS TO LOCAL SOPRANO NICOLA SAID ABOUT MALTA OPERA, APPRECIATING HOMEGROWN ABILITIES, AND THAT OPERA AND CLASSICAL MUSIC SHOULD BE ENJOYED BY EVERYONE.

Just over two years ago, what started off as a joke between Nicola Said, a Maltese soprano, and her friends, this year, became a dream come true. Nicola was discussing the very same issue that prompted this dream, the fact that so much talent in Malta goes unnoticed, especially in the world of the arts. “Maybe I should start my own opera company!’, Nicola exclaimed to her friends who replied, ‘Why don’t you?”. Nicola called this moment her ‘lightbulb moment’, the point in time which started the incredible journey of Malta Opera.

Nicola Said, presently under the artistic guidance of Juliette Bisazza, always loved to sing. She studied abroad and acquired multiple scholarships which aided her studies, both in Europe such as Italy, London, and Edinburgh, and also outside the EU, including America.

“In Edinburgh, I realised that it was possible to make a living by being an artist. I started seeing a different life, a life that seemed much larger than the one I had imagined. It was the life of a bohemian artist, and I realised that is what I wanted to do. There I had access to so much music. It was like opening a treasure chest and discovering there was so much more than you ever expected. It felt right to follow that path. It felt like my voice wanted to explore all that, and more.”

In 2014, Nicola became the Malta Airport Foundation Ambassador, and she was fully making a living as an artist. However, she soon realised that as her work was taking her everywhere, the more she stayed away from Malta, the more Malta started to forget her. The

pandemic proved to be the perfect opportunity for Nicola to make her comeback in her home country. Apart from doing so in her solo career, she has now also taken on a more community-based journey with Malta Opera.

“Malta has a tendency to underappreciate local talent. It is true that we need to go abroad to complete higher levels of training, like with many industries. This typically happens with many small countries due to their limited number of resources. But what happens to people who do not have the opportunity to study abroad? They still have talent and so much potential. They might not have been lucky enough to be awarded scholarships - and this is not always down to them not being talented enough. It’s sometimes down to ‘not being in the right place at the right time’. I recognised this and I want to change it with Malta Opera. At least I could try to foster an environment which would make it more possible for everyone to have what amounts to a full-time career in music and the classical scene in Malta. Most times, we’re not even aware of our own local talent.”

Malta Opera is a unique, professional collaborative initiative with the aim of bringing together Maltese singers, experienced and professional management, artistic production, and internationally renowned conductors with long standing connections with Malta. Previous events included a Masterclass at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta titled ‘The German System: What’s Your Fach?’ – in which eight talented singers took the spotlight for three days under the

54 CULTURE

A more recent event was a gala concert at the Casino Maltese in Valletta on the 5th of May 2022. The concert included a rich and diverse programme organised by Nicola and featuring 12 established Maltese opera singers who were joined by seven young and emerging singers. Established performers included Francesca Aquilina, Albert Buttigieg, Louis Andrew Cassar, Graziella Debattista, Clare Ghigo, Joseph Lia, Nicola Said, Ken Scicluna, Cliff Zammit Stevens, Nadia Vella, Charles Vincenti and Gillian Zammit. Emerging singers (also in alphabetical order) participating were Michaela Agius, Mariette Borg, Mariah Costa, Maria Grazia Grech, Madeleine Gruppetta, Gabrielle Portelli, and Nicole Vassallo. Hinting at future projects focusing on young and emerging talent, Nicola strengthens the fact that we need to educate our children from a young age to get them to appreciate the arts.

‘People have this idea that opera is only for the elite. Nowadays, while I enjoy dressing up to go to the opera, it is not unusual to see people also turn up in jeans. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. We missed some generations of educating the audience and we’re seeing and feeling that gap now. Thanks to projects like ZiguZajg Festival and Toi Toi Teatru Manoel Youth Programmes, we’re slowly getting more young people interested. The opera can be adapted for young people and kids love it! There are so many styles within opera. People are scared that they

wouldn’t understand it but how will they know that unless they go out and try?’

Nicola refers to opera and classical music as stepping into another world… “as if you’re part of a dream but it’s reality”. “We want to take the audience on a journey. It’s like when you’re watching a movie except it is real and in person. I believe that a movie doesn’t touch your heart the way that a live performance can. A live performance can pierce a heart. We don’t want to lose the art of singing and the human voice. We need to remember that feeling. It’s very special.”

If you have never been to the opera before, Nicola has only one thing left to tell you.

“Jus t go and try and explore. One night, instead of going to the movies or eating at a restaurant, decide to make an evening out of it a nd go to the theatre. Assess if you like it and if you don’t, that’s ok! It doesn’t mean that you will have the same experience every single time. I have been to the opera myself and have been bored out of my mind because it was a bad production. If you see a bad movie, you won’t stop going to the cinema just because you have a bad experience. I believe that there’s still this fear that one should belong to a certain type of class to be able to experience opera. I cannot stress this enough…opera, the theatre, art…it’s for everyone!”

SOCIETY FASHION IN MALTA

THE PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY OF LEANDRO PREZIOSI (1830-1869)

A spectacular long black lace shawl with large Maltese Cross motif, carte de visite, c. 1860.

Photographer: Leandro Preziosi. Courtesy: Kevin Casha Collection.

IN THE PIONEERING RESEARCH OF FASHION HISTORY IN MALTA, CAROLINE TONNA, AUTHOR AND ART HISTORIAN, PRESENTS A VISUAL ANALYSIS OF THE STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF DRESS WORN BY WELL-TO-DO FAMILIES IN MID-19TH CENTURY.

The book, Society Fashion in Malta: The Portrait Photography of Leandro Preziosi (1830-1869) gives a visual documentary of fashion using a largish choice of unpublished photographs of society photographer, Leandro Preziosi, possibly the first Maltese professional photographer, who was active between the 1850s until the end of 1869.

Leandro’s monochronic photographs measure his good sense of taste and his compositions are clean and austere. He captures dress details that document the significance and elegance of dress and also brings out detail of hair and accessories in his portraiture of faces. The selected portrait photographs were painstakingly discovered from various private collectors and have been thoroughly analysed to provide a comprehensive understanding of dress fashion in Malta of the period. They also represent the pretentions, confidence, aspiration, sophistication and stature of a selection of a steady developing society who

could afford to buy luxuries, clothing and accessories. Even more so, this particular strata of society took advantage of the new art form of photography to immortalise the visual representation of themselves, their persona, identity and vanity to the outside world.

Studio photography also offered well-to-do women, a unique opportunity to be the focal centre of attention. Momentarily, when in the confined space of the studio, the female sitters could perform their individuality, wearing dress and accessories of their choice, and take a performative role to pose for the photograph. These portrait photographs were fashionably reproduced in the format of carte de visite, the popular small sized photograph that could easily be carried around in pockets or handbags and commonly given to friends and visitors in the 1860s.

Many of the chosen photographs in this book feature women in Victorian dress and the author gives a faithful account of the

56 LOCAL

fashion style, textiles, adornments and accessories supported by archival documentation, travel literature and newspapers of the era to reconstruct the narrative of dress history on the island. The study also highlights what was indigenous in clothing and what was cosmopolitan. Although it seemed that well-to-do Maltese families embraced the latest fashion styles dictated by the leading fashion capitals of Paris and London, they did not outrightly reject local culture and traditions in clothing. For example, the faldetta, the round hooded cloak, traditionally worn by Maltese women, also known as għonnella, was still worn in public by most women, some of whom wore it over Victorian styled dresses. The faldetta, was a singular garment that embodied a strong Maltese identity and values. Thus, the ‘modern’ woman deftly merged the Malteseness of the faldetta with the Englishness of the Victorian dress, juxtaposing the vernacular with the colonial, and creating an idiosyncrasy in the art of dress.

The studio portrait photographs also reveal the ability and skill of these individuals in making subtle derivations from the dictated fashion to their own taste and accessorise their ensemble with Maltese sophistication such as local fine lace (illustrated in the previous page). An example of these markers of refinery in dress is this large exquisite black shawl made of Maltese lace worn by a young lady. In the 1850, Empress Eugénie of France (1826-1920) favoured black lace and this led to the popularity of this fashion trend admired and followed by many women all over the world, including Malta. These shawls, some of which were made in Maltese lace, were certainly fine objects that gave dignity and an air of elegance to their wearers.

In this portrait, Leandro, skilfully captures the tactile quality of the intricate design of the lacework made with continuous thread. It is characterised by it s iconic motif of the Maltese Cross, encircled with a geometric design and enclosed within a framework of tendrils, edged with a scalloped border. The full-length portrait of the young lady has a pyramidal composition, allowing the viewer to observe the geometric design of the dress at the hem that gives the impression of a double skirt. The tight front-buttoned bodice is also decorated with semi-circular matching bands and the attire is further enhanced with a feathered hat and jewellery.

Society Fashion in Malta: The Portrait Photography of Leandro Preziosi (1830-1869), is another beautifully illustrated publication by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti and it is the first book on the history of dress in photography. It celebrates the life and achievements of one major master of photography and offers a fundamental survey of the history of dress set in the political, financial, cultural and social hothouses of the Victorian era in Malta.

LOVE, LAUGHTER AND BEING AUTHENTICALLY YOU – GREGORY SIMS TO GLITTER IN LA CAGE AUX FOLLES AT TEATRU MANOEL

REHEARSALS FOR ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED MUSICALS EVER TO GRACE THE STAGE – LA CAGE AUX FOLLES – ARE IN FULL SWING AT TEATRU MANOEL, MALTA’S HISTORIC NATIONAL THEATRE. HERE, BIZZILLA MEETS WEST END ACTOR GREGORY SIMS, WHO TOOK TIME FROM HIS BUSY SCHEDULE TO GIFT US WITH A TANTALISING TASTE OF WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN THE SHOW OPENS LATER THIS MONTH.

Set against the fabulous backdrop of gorgeous drag queens and consummate cabaret, La Cage Aux Folles tells a heartening tale about identity, family, and the things we do for love.

At the centre of the story are nightclub owner, Georges, and his loving partner of 20 years, Albin – better known as drag queen extraordinaire, Zaza. Life at La Cage is magical, but their world is rocked when Georges’ son, Jean-Michel, becomes engaged to the daughter of an intolerant, right-wing politician. The whole family is put to test when they try to reconcile who they are with who JeanMichel needs them to be. Emotions run high, hilarity ensues, but can love conquer all?

Lucky audiences will soon find out, in a new production of La Cage Aux Folles, which will be staged at Teatru Manoel this month. Helping to tell that story is Gregory Sims, a West End actor who has joined the cast as Dance Captain and Cagelle.

“La Cage Aux Folles is a feast for the eyes,” says Gregory, whose distinguished career has already taken him from London’s West End to filming Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again. “Ready yourself for glitz, glamour, humour, laughter, tears, and a lesson about being authentically you. This show is all about celebrating diversity… It’s

funny, energetic, and thought provoking. Above all, it’s entertaining, and God knows we need laughs after the last couple of years!”

As opening night draws near, Gregory describes the atmosphere backstage as electric. “You’ve worked so hard to create something for people to watch and enjoy, so naturally the stakes are high,” he says. “You’re proud of everyone and want it to go as well as possible. The energy is almost palpable and it’s a great vibe.”

And he is nervous? “I don’t get nervous,” the actor smiles. “I get excited!”

Still the stakes are high as he manages both of his roles within the show – dance captain and Cagelle. How does he do it? “I am used to multitasking,” he says. “I have understudied roles before and was also swing in London’s We Will Rock You, where I had about 10 different parts to learn. Being a Cagelle is great fun. You can take liberties and really play around with an alter-ego. It’s empowering.”

Like so many musical theatre devotees, Gregory’s love for the art form grew from a seed planted at an early age. At just four, he sat transfixed at a performance of The Phantom of The Opera, and he fell hook, line, and sinker.

60 EVENTS

His advice for aspiring young performers dreaming of the West End? “Stay on your a-game when you leave college. Try and get to class as often as you can; take the workshops, network your ass off, and stay humble. Look after your body, look after your mental health, and you’ll be in it for the long haul.”

In the name of staying humble, Gregory’s final thoughts are for his loved ones: “I want to thank all my family and friends for their support over the last couple of years,” he says.

La Cage Aux Folles is Gregory’s first foray into Malta’s theatre scene – and he hopes it will be the first of many. If you’re in Malta this

October, don’t miss the opportunity to take your seat for what is shaping up to be the theatre event of the year.

La Cage Aux Folles will be performed at Teatru Manoel on October 21, 22, 28, 29 at 8pm and october 23, 26, 27, 30 at 7.30pm. This production is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals and is suitable for audiences aged 13 and over. Wilfrid Flores’s photographic work needs to be seen within the context of its time from around the late 1920’s until his death in 1981. A master of his craft and an inventive and technically skilled darkroom printer his contribution to photography in Malta cannot be overstated. By comparison very few photographers in Malta were attaining his level of artistic interpretation and metaphor. Ultimately his intention was not to document Malta (as many others were doing) but to go beyond the document towards a more contemplative reading of his photographs. By doing so he left us a testament of a time in Maltese history. His quasi-romantic relation to nature speaks to us of a calm and serenity that in today’s world is all but lost. His empathy for the people he photographed, and for the human condition as a whole, raises uncomfortable questions about our own society that has veered towards an obsessive exaltation of the self. His legacy, as is that of many great master photographers, is that of an artist that is beyond his time and who sees “as angels see”. This exhibition of 30 photographs curated by David Pisani will open from the 29th October to 22nd November 2022 at Christine X Curated in Sliema.

The Baroque Church of Saint James the Major in Merchants Street Vallet ta houses Valletta Resounds, a weekly music-theatre performance inspired by the captivating story of the church and the capital of the Maltese Islands through storytelling and classical music.

Valletta is a European cultural landmark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has retained its 16th century splendour, bursting with history and curiosities. Walking through Valletta’s pedestrianised streets should be done at a leisurely pace as many of the capital's most alluring secrets are tucked away, hidden in plain sight and very easily missed. At the top of Valletta’s iconic Merchants Street lies a hidden Valletta gem, The Church of Saint James the Major. The Church was built on the designs of Romano Carapecchia and served for religious service to the Langue of Castille, Leon & Portugal of the Knights of the Order of St John.

Time stops as one steps into the baroque capsule of the captivating building, the setting of a new weekly site-specific performance. Valletta Resounds elegantly strings together the church’s ornate charm married with theatrical storytelling and timeless classical music from the baroque period. The church’s high ceilings and its natural reve rberative acousti cs make for an exquisite venue for live sacred music, backdropped magnificently with paintings featuring work by the revered Italia n artist, Filippo Paladini.

Critically acclaimed Maltese musicians under the musical direction of Jacob Portelli are at the helm of the site-specific performance,

bringing to life the works of Baroque Masters such as Handel and Bach along with the sound of sacred Maltese music by composer Francesco Decesare and more. Sung to perfection by some of Malta’s most esteemed sopranos, Dorothy Bezzina, Dorothy Baldacchino and Marouska Attard, the music is beautifully brought to life on Baroque Harp, Baroque Violin, Baroque Cello, Organ and on the Psaltery. This auditory delight is woven harmoniously with stories of the church and its custodians narrated by the ever-charming and quirky character of sacristan Perello, written and performed by Jeremy Grech. The sacristan swiftly moves the performance through the ages; from the Knights of St John who majestically embellished the church’s interiors, through all the wars that left scars on the building’s robust facade.

Valletta Resounds is an immersive music-theatre experience that goes beyond the performative aspect. It delves deep into the history of a church that has seen the beloved capital of a nation develop into the cherished city it has now become, through different periods and rulers including the Grandmasters, French and British.

Valletta Resounds is performed in English with translations of the text in Spanish, German, French and Italian. The production is performed at noon every Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting from the 13th of October with a special free preview at the everpopular Notte Bianca on the 1st of October. PUMPKIN, OLIVE OIL AND DARK CHOCOLATE CAKE

INGREDIENTS

1 medium-sized squash or the same equivalent size of pumpkin, peeled & deseeded 230ml olive oil 230g plain flour 3tsp baking powder Grated zest of 1 orange 1tsp salt 230g sugar 3 eggs 200g dark chocolate, roughly chopped

FOR THE GLAZE

150g icing sugar 1.5tbsp orange juice 1.5tbsp olive oil

METHOD

Heat the oven to 220°C or Gas Mark 7 and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Cut the squash/pumpkin into rough cubes and transfer onto the dish. Roast until totally soft, around 30-40 minutes. Blend the roasted squash/pumpkin until smooth and measure out 230g of the puree and let it cool.

Lower the oven heat to 170°C or Gas Mark 3 and butter a large ring (bundt) tin well. Make sure to butter every crevice possible.

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together into a large bowl. In a separate bowl whisk the oil, sugar, squash/pumpkin puree, zest and eggs together. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and mix everything using a whisk until you have a smooth batter. Stir in the chocolate pieces. Pour into the tin and bake for 90 minutes, until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before turning out.

For the glaze, mix the orange juice with the icing sugar until the consistency resembles that of syrup. Whisk in the oil and then pour over the cooled cake.

AIR MALTA PARTNERS WITH COVER GENIUS TO OFFER EMBEDDED TRAVEL PROTECTION

Air Malta has partnered with Cover Genius, the ‘insurtech’ for embedded insurance, to offer its global customers embedded travel protection directly in the Airmalta.com booking path.

By integrating with Cover Genius’ global distribution platform, XCover, Air Malta can offer customers protection against trip cancellation through sickness or injury; inability to travel if diagnosed with Covid-19; emergency medical treatment and 24/7 assistance; baggage or electronics which are accidentally damaged or stolen; as well as 24/7 customer support and easy online claims.

This partnership follows a global travel insurance survey conducted by Momentive.ai, and commissioned by Cover Genius, that shows customers in EMEA are highly dissatisfied with traditional travel protection with an average Net Promoter Score (NPS) of -34. The same survey revealed that customers were most satisfied - and least likely to switch providers - if they purchased protection from their travel provider (i.e. agents, suppliers and airlines). In fact, 32% of EU travellers intend to switch to their travel provider/agent next time.

Convenience and avoiding the “second step” of having to buy a protection after the initial purchase is why 40% of EMEA

travellers prefer embedded protection, displaying a major shift in the way protection is acquired in favour of agents, suppliers, and airline s.

ABOUT COVER GENIUS Cover Genius is the insurtech for embedded insurance that protects the global customers of the world’s largest digital companies including Booking Holdings, Intuit, Skyscanner, Ryanair, Icelandair, airBaltic, Ola, Descartes ShipRush and SeatGeek. We’re also available at Amazon, Flipkart, eBay, Wayfair and SE Asia’s largest company, Shopee. Cover Genius’ vision is to protect all the customers of the world’s largest online companies through XCover, an award-winning global distribution platform for any lin e of insurance or warranty, with an API for instant claims payments that holds an industryleading NPS of +65‡.

Cover Genius and partners co-create solutions that embed protection that’s licensed or authorized in over 60 countries & all 50 US States.

‡ The score includes any type of claim and claim outcome across our partner network except for those partners with less than 30 claims and those not assessed by Cover Genius.

THE GOLDEN BUCKLE BARREL RACE COMES TO MALTA

Barrel racing brings about an electric atmosphere among those present, keeping you on the edge of your seat!

Golden Buckle; the largest barrel race in European history will arrive in Malta this October at the Malta Fairs & Convention Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that will be transformed into a barrel racing arena.

Over 200 horses and 100 European and American riders will be in Malta from the 13th to the 16th of October. World Champions will join in this 4-day competition where winners can take up to €150,000 in winning prizes.

Barrel racing - a fast-paced timed event - challenges the paired team of horse and rid er to run a clover-leaf pattern around 3 barrels as fast as they can. It’s an event that keeps you on the edge of your seat much like horse-racing. The sport’s top riders are so close in their timings that an electronic timing device calculates their times to the thousandth of a second! The anticipation arises until they announce the time. When a “New Leader” occurs, the energy through the stadium is electric! You will want to make sure you have a seat reserved so you don’t miss it!

The sport is particularly popular in the US, especially Texas, but has gained attention in Europe, with Italy being the biggest market for the sport, followed by France, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The Malta eventwill feature a number of world champion riders as well as other participants from 10 countries, including one from Malta.

The races will be complimented with a number of satellite events where one can meet the riders and other equestrian enthusiasts from across the world. The arena will be transformed into an equestrian centre which will also host a food court, a large VIP stand, and a chillout area.

Throughout the event, you will watch competitors of all ages competing in their specified categories Junior, Youth, Ladies, and Open Barrel Racing – plus another timed-event called Pole Bending just as a bonus to enhance your experience!

Whether you are just learning about barrel racing or you are a professional in the equestrian industry, the Golden Buckle Barrel Race has much to offer you. Come enjoy food, entertainment, beautiful horses, and talented riders! Sit back, relax, pick a few favorites and cheer them on! We hope to see everyone at the Malta Fairs & Convention Centre in October 13-16th!

The e vent will be streamed live on a number of international linear and digital platforms in Malta, Europe, America, and Brasil.

Golden Buckle Malta is being organised in collaboration with Visit Malta, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Ministry for Tourism, Equestri Malta, the Ministry for Education and Sports along with other supporting partners.

IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO LEYLA TASKIN

GROUP SALES AGENT

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLES?

I have been working at Air Malta for four-and-a-half years as a Group Sales agent for the French-speaking markets.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

Being of assistance to our long-standing trade partners in the French-speaking markets and finding solutions with other teams to ensure customer satisfaction. I also get personal satisfaction in closing deals with the trade when it comes to incoming groups to Malta. This also helps contribute to the Maltese economy.

AND WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT?

The ever-changing market trends and current affairs which have a direct effect on our operations. The biggest challenge I faced with my team was the pandemic since it had a direct effect on the materialisation of groups and the flow of bookings coming in as a result of the restrictions and safety measures which were put in place. However, the lifting of restrictions has put us back on track and opened a new and more positive challenge for us, that of covering lost business and becoming profitable once again.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND MOST OF YOUR FREE TIME?

I enjoy going for a walk in the countryside during springtime, and going to the beach for a good swim in the summer. Since I moved to Malta five years ago, I have attended locally organised events and festas across the islands which brings me very much in touch with the local community and makes me feel a part of it.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE COUNTRY TO HAVE VISITED AND WHY?

That will be Turkey, and for a good reason, since my family has Turkish origins from the Aegean region. We used to go to Turkey with my family to visit our relatives every year and I was always very much fascinated by the culture and their way of living which differs from that of us Europeans, the colourful markets, beautiful mosques and their cuisine. I definitely recommend a visit to Pamukkale and to the ancient city of Ephesus.

WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TOURISTS VISIT WHILE ON HOLIDAY IN MALTA?

I would definitely recommend trekking off the beaten track. Miġra l-Ferħa and Ras id-Dawwara are my favourite trekking spots – you can admire the Maltese landscapes and sea views from these spots. If you are after a more relaxed setting, then Mdina - also known as the Silent City - would be my top recommendation. There you can enjoy a nice stroll in the narrow winding roads, admire the beautiful old palazzos built with Maltese limestone and enjoy beautiful views of the island from the bastions.

TOP 3 MOVIES?

I would say “La vita è bella”, “Cinema Paradiso” and as a recent one “Top Gun: Maverick”.

FAVOURITE GENRE OF MUSIC?

My preferred genre is rock music, however I like all kinds of music depending on my mood!

PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? Ftira biż żejt

DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION?

I wish to travel to America and to visit the Grand Canyon National Park and the Yosemite National Park.

FAVOURITE MALTESE EXPRESSION?

“Mela” which would normally mean of course, and which is very much used by my Maltese peers.
