FROM THE CHAIRMAN...
FRO M THE ED ITO R... Dear travellers,
Merħba,
The month of July is upon us, the temperature has stepped up a level, and the essence of normality is resuming upon the Maltese islands. By the time you are reading this, Malta will once again be welcoming tourists back to our sunny shores.
As we start to see some positive increases in demand especially from the German, French and Dutch markets, we are adapting our summer flight network and schedule to provide a better service for our customers. This month we have added Berlin and Dusseldorf to our network with a twice a week frequency, and increased frequencies to Paris and Amsterdam. We will continue to adapt our scheduled services and reassign capacity in line with market demands.
Throughout this issue, you can expect, as always, a plethora of top places to visit, tentalising dishes to try and, of course, a few interviews with some incredibly interesting local artisans. One such character is Kevin Attard, who has perfected the art of filigree. Malta’s filigree legacy dates back to the Phoenicians who spread this technique throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. However, local artisans like Kevin, have made it all their own, with the most prominent motif being the eight-pointed cross. This ubiquitous symbol is found in different variations, with or without gemstones, gold, or silver, and on bracelets and earrings. While many modern pieces with varying motifs, materials, and quality make an excellent gift, it is the antique pieces that catch the eyes of collectors. If you’re lucky enough to come across these rare finds, don’t pass up the opportunity to purchase a part of Maltese heritage and savour it for years to come
We have also seen an increase of demand for charter services. Over recent months charter business has seen good growth with several high-profile flights organised for film and TV crews, sport teams, private charters, and government-related business. This growth is in line with our focus to increase business opportunities through diverse products and services that can generate new revenue streams for the airline. Read more on these changes and initiatives from page 61 onward. For more information and the latest news about Air Malta and our flight schedule please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly to your inbox. Air Malta is customer-driven and we are always keen to know how we can improve your flight experience. Visit www.airmalta.com/wearelistening to answer a few short questions about your flight with us and you can win one of 10 free return Air Malta flights that we are offering every month. It only takes two minutes! Your feedback helps us understand your travel needs better and continue improving our travel experience.
Elsewhere in the issue, we caught up with highly acclaimed artist James Vella Clark, who shares his contemporary twist on Maltese landscapes. We head off the beaten track to Fort St Angelo, a place steeped with mystery, intrigue and even plenty of ghost stories. Food lovers do not despair. We have got you covered with our top restaurant picks and even a seasonal prawn recipe. We are glad to see Malta’s culinary scene is rapidly resuming pace since the pandemic closures, and creativity flourish.
Thank you for flying Air Malta! Enjoy this edition and keep safe.
Sit back, relax, you will soon be there.

Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie a Mediterranean classic since 1952, loved by the local population and tourists. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zero-calorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced, as well as Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an intense orange flavour. WITH SO MANY CITIES, TOWNS AND VILLAGES ON OUR LITTLE ISLANDS, IT’S HARD TO DECIDE WHAT TO SEE AND WHERE TO GO. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WE’LL BE HIGHLIGHTING OUR TOP LOCATIONS FOR THE SEASON. THIS MONTH IT'S ŻURRIEQ AND QRENDI, MALTA.
SIX TOP SIGHTS
HAGAR QIM
MNAJDRA
The Megalithic temple of Ħaġar Qim stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla. The temple dates back to 3600-3200 BC. The façade, with its trilithon entrance, has been restored and gives an idea of what it may once have looked like.
Mnajdra is a temple complex that’s about a 700m walk downhill from Ħaġar Qim. It was built around the same time and consists of three temples. The lowest temple is astronomically aligned, and archaeologists believe that it was most likely used as an astronomical observation or calendrical site.
San Mattew tal-Maqluba is a Roman Catholic church located in the centre of Qrendi. The church’s main attraction is a painting by a famous Baroque artist - Mattia Preti. It depicts the martyrdom of St Matthew. It can be found behind the main altar and dates back to 1688.
HAMRIJA TOWER
BALI GUARENA PALACE
GHAR HANEX COASTLINE
This watchtower was built in 1659 by the Order of St John. It offered protection against invaders from the south then, and now provides a majestic view of the island of Filfla which is about 5 km away. The tower was restored by Heritage Malta and is part of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park.
This palace built in 1740 has a simple architecture and was made to offer its occupants protection from potential sea raiders who might’ve landed in Qrendi. The palace has a beautiful garden which was used by The King’s Own Malta Regiment - a regiment of local Maltese that valiantly protected the shores of Malta.
This hidden gem is a coastline that is full of rock formations, beautiful luminescent blue water and a plethora of flora and fauna. You can also get a beautiful view of the island of Filfla from here. It is recommended that you stay within the green markings on the ground.

CISK 0.0, AN ALCOHOL-FREE LAGER BEER exclusive licence to manufacture Pilsner and Munchener type beers. The company became known as The Malta Export Brewery. The story however, started much earlier than that, when Malta’s first privately-owned bank was established by Giuseppe Scicluna in 1840. In those days the average businessman, as well as the ordinary man in the street, hoarded their hard-earned cash either in a brassbound box under the bed or concealed in various leather pouches hidden in their clothes. At most, it would be handed over to the bank to be placed in a vault and to be withdrawn as the need arose. Mistrusting bank notes and demanding bags of coins, the bank’s customers started to realise that they too could pay creditors with notes, and they agreed to operate current accounts with Scicluna’s Bank against which they could draw cheques. Very soon, semi-literate depositors coming in from various country districts, who found difficulty in pronouncing the word ‘cheques’, corrupted the word into ‘ċisk’. Giuseppe Scicluna himself soon became known as Iċ-Ċisk (The Cisk). The Malta Export Brewery merged with Simonds Farsons Limited twenty years later to become Simonds Farsons Cisk. Cisk Lager has since become a key brand in the portfolio of the company. The award-winning Cisk range of beers now includes the original Cisk Lager, a golden-coloured, bottom-fermented lager with a

IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO MARIET TE DIMECH CABIN CREW HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA? I have been working with Air Malta for 11 years and I have always formed part of the cabin crew. Lately, I also had the opportunity to carry out administrative work related to in-flight services and cabin operations and also the opportunity to involve myself in various audits related to cabin safety and operations. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? The Covid-19 situation is by far one of the toughest challenges. It changed the dynamic of our work. From the sudden cancellation of flights, to yet provide a pleasant experience amidst the fear of the unknown. At that time customers were not totally confident to travel and it was part of my duty to make them feel at ease whilst enforcing the new company protocols such as the wearing of masks during the duration of the flight. In parallel to that I did my utmost to protect myself knowing I had to return to my one-year-old son at home. The instability and uncertainties left on the aviation industry, was and will remain a tough challenge for the months to come. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? My spare time is very limited with a toddler and a busy life, so I always choose to spend such time with my family, like going for walks at various beautiful spots in Malta, swimming or going for a family vacation abroad. I also love watching movies and baking some treats in my free time. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? As a main dish I love the traditional rabbit stew and spaghetti with rabbit sauce. As a quick lunch, nothing beats the Ħobż biż-żejt (Maltese bread) especially whilst soaking up the sun at the beach. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME? I like to watch movies based on real life events. My favourite movie of all times is ‘Escape from Sobibor’ because it is very powerful and emotional. Its production is so realistic that one can easily feel the hardships and pain people went through. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? I am not into one particular genre. I actually have a variety of tastes depending on my mood and the environment I am in. As long as it is good music to my ear, I can listen to anything. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING MALTA? One of my favourite spots is the Blue Grotto at Wied iz-Zurrieq, as it brings a lot of childhood memories. I also like our capital city, Valletta, for its historical attractions and architecture and Mdina, the Silent City, for its serenity and tranquillity. For those who like to hike and would like to get away from it all, I recommend several beautiful trails like Dingli Cliffs and Fawwara Trail, Lapsi Trail Walk and the Watch Towers Walk. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY? New Zealand, without any doubt! It was my honeymoon destination, so it brings a lot of nice memories. New Zealand is a true gem which offers a lot of diversity and natural beauty. It is very rich in culture, nature and wildlife. The country is renowned for a wide variety of outdoor activities which I really love. Additionally, the Kiwis are very welcoming and highly organised. In my opinion, New Zealand is a must travel destination for everyone, especially for honeymooners.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
SMOKING
Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.
FACE MASKS The Airline requires all passengers to wear an approved medical or cloth face mask at all times, starting from boarding, for the duration of the flight, through to disembarkation. Passengers will not be allowed to board without a facemask. Masks should also be worn within the airport building, before and during check-in, upon arrival, when collecting baggage, and up to the point that a passenger leaves the airport building. As per the Government of Malta Legal Notice 402 of 2020, children under three (3) years of age and persons with severe cognitive, physical, mental, or respiratory impairments who have difficulties tolerating a mask as certified by a licensed medical practitioner are exempted from wearing masks. Certified individuals shall always carry the relevant medical certificate exempting them from wearing a mask. Passengers risk fines if they fail to comply.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
