FROM THE CHAIRMAN...

FRO M THE ED ITO R...

Dear Guests, Merħba,

Dear travellers,

It’s hard to believe how our lives have changed during the last 18 months. As we enter the last quarter of 2021, we finally began to see signs of recovery across our European markets. The months of August, September and October have all experienced some increases in bookings as vaccination programmes become further embedded, required documentation more aligned across countries and customer confidence in travelling starts to rebuild again. These signs are encouraging. It is good to note that similar market confidence is starting to reflect throughout Europe and this is good for the future.

Every season bears different fruit within the Maltese islands, and as we transition into the month of October, Autumn in the islands hits a little later than our European counterparts. The change in seasons makes for an excellent time to explore on foot, without the scorching temperatures that make it a challenging feat mid-summer. October is, of course, the month of Halloween. Although the islands are deeply religious, there’s plenty of superstition and ghost tales to be shared, as Matthew Camilleri explores on page 26. But, if that’s not your bag, rest assured we have plenty of other fascinating features. Just check out 'Luzzu' on page 22, the award-winning film that’s undoubtedly putting Maltese film production on the global stage.

At the end of this month, we will commence our Winter schedule. We are initially planning to operate 67 return direct weekly scheduled services to 15 major European Airports offering around half a million seats. Popular cities like London, Paris, Munich, Rome, Catania, Vienna and Zurich will be the most served in terms of flight frequencies in our network while we are also pleased to announce that we will be extending our twice weekly flights to Berlin, Dusseldorf and Lyon during winter-time too. Read more about it on page 70.

As you may reasonably expect by now, there’s our island highlights, six top sights, a sumptuous recipe from the team at Marriot Hotel, and our monthly star pick destination, the unmissable silent city of Mdina, which surely will not disappoint. Sitting on top of a hill overlooking large parts of Malta, it’s a small town, rich in history and surrounded by tall bastion fortifications. It’s filled with centuries-old buildings that have been well-maintained throughout the ages. Mdina is one of the most visited places by travellers because there’s no place like it anywhere. Indeed, if you are a fan of the popular TV series Game of Thrones, be sure to put it at the top of your itinerary!

Going forward we are working hard on an ambitious summer 2022 flight schedule during which we will effectively double our operations over the winter. The planned Summer 2022 schedule, which will offer over 250 flights per week to 20 destinations including flights to London Gatwick, Madrid and Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, demonstrates our strong belief that leisure travel, and tourism will bounce back earlier than we expected. At the heart of all these plans are our valued customers, as we continue to endeavor to make their travel experience as smooth and stress free as possible.

We hope this month’s edition of Bizzilla brings some welcome knowledge, entertainment, and insight about our glorious islands. As economies gain strength and people continue to band together to fight coronavirus, looking ahead to a brighter future can pay great dividends.

As the flag carrier of Malta, Air Malta is the natural choice for transporting critical cargo to and from the Maltese islands. Last month we supported the Malta Civil Protection Department to deliver blankets and pillows to Lithuania to assist the country as it deals with its migrant crisis. This humanitarian donation was transported on a special Air Malta charter flight to the country’s capital, Vilnius.

Sit back, relax - you will soon be there.

For more information and the latest news about Air Malta, our flight schedule and the new website, please visit airmalta.com, facebook.com/AirMalta or join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly to your inbox. Thank you for flying Air Malta! Enjoy this edition and keep safe.

By the medieval period, Mdina was the home of the island’s nobility, the Bishop’s seat, and a citadel protecting the island’s inhabitants from frequent pirate incursions. Although Valletta’s construction in the 1560s lessened Mdina’s importance, a strong earthquake in 1693 led to major reconstruction and a revival of the city.

Since then, Mdina has changed very little and is today a fantastic melting pot of the numerous foreign influences that have over time been beautifully welded together: a city with plenty of hidden details and anecdotes. One of the more mysterious buildings is the Benedictine monastery for cloistered nuns dedicated to St Peter which is the perfect embodiment of the term ‘Silent City’. Dating back to the 15th century, when the Benedictine community was first established here, the building still performs its original role. It is said that in the past, when rules were very stringent, no male was ever allowed to enter the convent’s walls, except perhaps those rendering essential services, while the nuns who joined never saw the outside world again, even being buried in the crypt of the adjoining church after their death. Theirs was a life of pious and strict devotion.

SUNKEN WRECKS

I N S E RL TOTCEAXLT H E R E

MALTA IS REGULARLY HAILED AS ONE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN’S BEST DIVING DESTINATIONS WITH PLENTY OF NATURAL REEFS AND A VARIETY OF FASCINATING MARINE LIFE TO EXPLORE. MORE INTRIGUING PERHAPS, ARE THE NUMBER OF HISTORICAL WRECKS DOTTED AROUND THE COASTLINE. Some of these ships and aircrafts met their watery fate in the white heat of battle during World War II. Others were strategically placed on the seabed to give divers a richer underwater playground to explore. Whatever your level of interest or diving experience, Malta most definitely has an underwater wreck for you. Here are a handful of spellbinding sunken sites to get you started. THE BLENHEIM BOMBER (XROBB L-GĦAĠIN) Malta has a few sunken airplane wrecks scattered around its shores, including a Junkers Ju 88 in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, a Fairey Swordfish in Sliema, and a B-24 Liberator Bomber in Marsaxlokk. High on the list for most divers is a WWII Bristol Blenheim Bomber, located 500m off the coast of Xrobb l-Għaġin, towards the southeast of the island. This Bristol built, twin-engine light bomber, served in the British Royal Air Force and formed part of the No. 18 Squadron. On the 13th of December 1941, while returning to Malta from a mission in Kefalonia, Greece, an Italian enemy aircraft attacked the Blenheim, causing damage to its port engine. Despite the crew miraculously making it all the way back to Maltese waters, flying little more than 30m above sea level, the pilot was unable to land in Luqa’s airfield and was forced to ditch the plane at sea. The Blenheim struck the water tail first, close to a local fisher boat who came to the crew’s rescue. Today, the eerie, disintegrating Blenheim bomber - with its intact wings, open cockpit, and bent propellers - lies on a bed of sand and small reefs at a depth of 42m. Due to occasionally strong currents, this site is recommended for more experienced divers. P31 PATROL BOAT (COMINO) The P31 Patrol Boat is the only diving wreck off Comino’s coast. This former East German minesweeper was sold to Malta in 1992 where it was used as a patrol boat by the Maritime Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta until 2004. When she was decommissioned, the vessel was cleaned and painstakingly scuttled for scuba diving. The P31 diving site lies on the white sands between Lantern Point and Cominotto, at a depth of around 22m. It’s a fantastic wreckage excursion, with plenty of swim-throughs and easy exits punctuating the vessel’s rusted, algae-covered hull. The marine life around the wreck is also pretty great. Here you’ll swim with soft-bodied nudibranch, fang-toothed moray eels, camouflaged scorpionfish, and sucker-legged octopus. Some divers have even spotted whip-tailed stingrays gliding across the seabed from time to time.

wanting to know whether I’d like to host a podcast (and everything else that comes with it). Being the podcast fan that I am, I said, yes, why not? So there I was suddenly plunged into the world of podcast production. The ‘everything else that comes with it’ involved doing techy stuff – not my forte but hey, I can learn ! And thus the podcast ‘Treasures from Malta’ was born. The name is a play on ‘Treasures of Malta’ which is the long standing, ever popular arts and culture journal, produced by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti for decades now. Although the ‘Treasures’ in this case are not artefacts, but people. People from the arts who have made a name for themselves and that we intended to record on our podcast. So, with a clear concept in mind and two brand new microphones, we kicked off the Treasures from Malta podcast series. As I write, we’re already in Season 2 and the list of outstanding people we’d like to interview keeps growing even as I work my way through it.

Experience Exceptional

I’ve had conversations with collectors, conservators, academics, artists, performers and educators and have tried to approach the arts, both performing and visual, from all angles. The only restriction, or firm requirement, is that the guests have a Malta connection. New episodes get released fortnightly which keeps me on my toes as I’ve got to do plenty of research, then there is the recording which is always such a joy for me as I get to ask all the questions I like, face to face with these wonderful guests. I’m always conscious of what a privilege it is. Then a week of editing and sometimes weaving in music, followed by write-ups, press releases and a number of other tasks before the podcast episode can get released. Feedback has been great and although that’s a short term win, long term these podcast episodes are building up into a database of oral history with a focus on the arts in Malta. I’ve loved every minute of this adventure and hope that I’ve kept some of you entertained, perhaps even on flights ! Do give it a listen. You’ll find ‘Treasures from Malta’ on every major podcast directory (Spotify, Apple, Google etc) or on www.patrimonju.org where you’ll also see pictures and links relating to each podcast episode. One last word of advice. Don’t forget to pack your earphones, because that’s absolutely essential for listening to podcasts!

Francesca Balzan is an artist, author and art historian based in Malta. She has specialised in the study of jewellery history in Malta and lectures and writes about the subject. The podcast ‘Treasures from Malta’ is researched, hosted and edited by Francesca Balzan

KINNIE

Simonds Farsons Cisk plc is synonymous with a beer brewing tradition rooted in quality. At the base of this tradition are long-established skills of selecting nature’s best ingredients coupled with the expertise of skilled and dedicated brewers that ensure that a high standard of quality is maintained at every step in the brewing process. Over the years, this dedication has contributed to creating award-winning brews that so many have grown to appreciate. Cisk Lager, launched in 1929, is a golden-coloured, bottom fermented lager with a distinctive and well-balanced character with an alcohol content of 4.2%. The range also includes Cisk Export – a smooth, well-balanced and exceptional beer with a 5% alcohol content, Cisk Excel – a low carbohydrate beer, Cisk Chill – flavoured beer available in three flavours, Cisk Pilsner – a premium pilsner with an alcohol content of 5.5% and Cisk Strong – an outstanding extra-strong premium lager with a 9% alcohol content.

Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, is a unique tasting bitter-sweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs. Kinnie is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie a Mediterranean classic since 1952, loved by the local population and tourists. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zero-calorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced, as well as Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an intense orange flavour. Beef carpaccio is a classic dish that involves minimal cooking and makes an elegant starter or lunchtime dish. Because the beef is being served raw, the secret is to choose top quality meat that has been hung for a good period of time to improve flavour and texture. Athough hailing from our neighbours Italy, it’s a popular choice on local menus. Find Chef Matthew’s sumptuous version here.

AGED BEEF CARPACCIO FRESH LOCAL SHEEP CHEESE, RAW MUSHROOMS, TURMERIC CRISP CARPACCIO Fillet of beef Mustard Extra virgin olive oil Gozo sea salt, cracked black pepper GARNISH Fresh local sheep cheese Crème fraise Mushrooms, thinly sliced Parsley picked-basil picked TURMERIC TUILE 66g water 5g turmeric 3g smoked paprika 32g vegetable oil 10g flour METHOD In a small sauce pan, bring water to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat and add in turmeric and smoked paprika. Cover and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Once steeped, reserve liquid. With a wooden spoon, mix together the spiced tea with oil and flour. Preheat a non-stick pan and pour some mixture. Swirl until it reaches the edges of the pan. Cook for 30 seconds, flip and then cook for another 30 seconds. Remove from pan onto plate and kitchen towel. Allow to cool. Season slightly. ASSEMBLY Slice fillet in 5mm thick slices. Place between two sheets of greaseproof paper, and flatten with a meat tenderiser. Season the plate with some extra virgin olive oil, salt flakes, cracked pepper and mustard. Lay roughly next to each other to cover the bottom of the plate and repeat the seasoning top. Crush the sheep cheese and fold in with some crème fraise. Spoon round the plate on three points. Scatter the sliced mushrooms randomly next to the cheese. Break the tuile in smaller pieces and scatter randomly. Finish with freshly picked herbs.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA? Four years and four months. THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOUR JOB?? Challenging, collaborative, precise. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? Communicating with several sections within the company in order to assign aircraft maintenance slots in between our flight schedule. DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES? I have a passion for aviation, travel and flying. I recently got my commercial pilot licence and am in the process of pursuing a long life dream of becoming an airline pilot. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? My preferred Maltese dish is the Maltese ftira, as well as other several Maltese sour bread. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? I follow alternative rock music such as Coldplay and The Killers. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME? My favourite movie of all time is Top Gun. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING MALTA? My favourite spot in Malta is Ħad-Dingli. Situated on the west coast of Malta, Dingli is renowned for its commanding views of the Mediterranean sea. Going for a walk by the cliffs is a must and one can enjoy the stunning seaside panoramas as well as the fresh air of the sea. From Dingli, one may keep heading south to Fawwara, a hamlet in the limits of Siġġiewi that offers the ultimate viewpoint of the cliffs as well as the Islet of Filfla in the distance. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY? My favourite destination is Paris. From the delicious food and desserts to the serenity of walks by the Seine river banks, Paris never fails to impress from every perspective.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

SMOKING

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

FACE MASKS The Airline requires all passengers to wear an approved medical or cloth face mask at all times, starting from boarding, for the duration of the flight, through to disembarkation. Passengers will not be allowed to board without a facemask. Masks should also be worn within the airport building, before and during check-in, upon arrival, when collecting baggage, and up to the point that a passenger leaves the airport building. As per the Government of Malta Legal Notice 402 of 2020, children under three (3) years of age and persons with severe cognitive, physical, mental, or respiratory impairments who have difficulties tolerating a mask as certified by a licensed medical practitioner are exempted from wearing masks. Certified individuals shall always carry the relevant medical certificate exempting them from wearing a mask. Passengers risk fines if they fail to comply.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
