W ELC OM E

FROM THE CHAIRPERSON...

FRO M THE ED ITO R...

Merħba,

Dear travellers

As the travel industry continues to see signs of recovery across our European markets, we are happy to note that travel rules are being relaxed or removed completely thus making it easier, once again, to travel freely. This will continue increasing the confidence in air travel and will undoubtedly contribute towards an increase in the number of tourists and Maltese travellers in the coming months.

June is the gateway to summer, and that really couldn’t be more true for the Maltese islands. If you are reading this on the way to Malta and Gozo, you are in for a real treat, bright blue skies, picture perfect sunsets and crystal clear lagoons await! June is also the month where we realise half a year has already passed us by! (How?!) It seems like just yesterday we were ushering in the New Year. But now as restrictions have continued to ease here, we have so much to catch up on, and look forward to!

Whilst a few countries are still requesting Passenger Locator Forms and the wearing of face masks onboard flights, Malta has removed both these requirements but the wearing of face masks onboard the aircraft is still determined by country specific laws, which might not necessarily be aligned with the EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) / ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) guidance to airlines to remove this requirement.

This issue brings you the very best of what the islands have to offer. You’ll find an eye-opening feature with Etienne Farrell, a contemporary local artist working in different mediums, who often dedicates her work to emotive issues. There’s also an interview with author Robert Busuttil, and Bizzilla writer Christine Cassar caught up with two exceptionally talented sisters who have designed an incredibly dreamy range of swimwear.

In line with this return to normal travel trends, we are very pleased to have re-instated our full Business Class service. The redefined complimentary Business Class service includes a selection of over 36 different menus that change depending on seasonality, flight duration and timings. Our product offers a unique experience celebrating the Maltese heritage and culture, expressed both in the type and quality of the food and drinks offered including gourmet meals with Mediterranean flavours, as well as their presentation in specially designed choice of crockery and items such as the handmade ‘żinġla’ bowls, Maltese tiles, and napkins.

Of course, if you are anything like me and constantly planning where to dine next, we have got you covered. Our restaurant listings offers up some of the best eateries across the islands, and that’s not forgetting a delicious gnocchi recipe brought to us this month by Chef Rebecca Borg. History buffs, don’t miss this month’s “Off The Beaten Track”, the Sacra Infermeria is a place you should certainly put on the top of your Malta to do list, the stunning building in Valletta was originally built as a hospital in the 16th century by the Order of St John.

Our new Business Class fare structure is aimed at rewarding customers who book early before the date of travel and represents exceptional value for service. If you have already booked an Air Malta Economy Class ticket and wish to enjoy the benefits of our Business Class service on your upcoming flight, you can now bid for an upgrade through our product Plusgrade and decide for yourself what an upgrade is worth to you. Up to 22 hours before departure, you will find out whether your bid has been successful. Read more information here: airmalta.com/en-mt/flight-extras/plusgrade

Whatever you have planned, enjoy your time on the islands, summers don’t get much better than Maltese ones, if I may say so myself! Sit back, relax, you’ll soon be there.

Buying an extra hold luggage has now become easier and cheaper! Starting from just €25 for a 23kg luggage per way, customers have various options to purchase additional bags, either at the time of booking, online from ‘Manage My Booking’ on our website, or from our call centre or sales office. For more information and the latest news about Air Malta and our summer flight schedule please visit www.airmalta.com or www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly to your inbox. Thank you for flying Air Malta! Enjoy this edition and keep safe.

The town is also renowned for its windmills of which there are several. Żurrieq’s name supposedly derives from the colour blue, which translates to żoroq in Maltese. There is an argument as to whether this is in reference to the blue seas or to the colour of the eyes of the town’s inhabitants, don’t stare too hard at the residents when trying to confirm this fact. Truth be told, it is more likely to be the former as the town’s motto is “Sic a Cyaneo Aequore Vocor”, meaning “From the blue sea I took my name”.

HAGAR QIM

MNAJDRA

The Megalithic temple of Ħaġar Qim stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla. The temple dates back to 3600-3200 BC. The façade, with its trilithon entrance, has been restored and gives an idea of what it may once have looked like.

Mnajdra is a temple complex that’s about a 700m walk downhill from Ħaġar Qim. It was built around the same time and consists of three temples. The lowest temple is astronomically aligned, and archaeologists believe that it was most likely used as an astronomical observation or calendrical site.

San Mattew tal-Maqluba is a Roman Catholic church located in the centre of Qrendi. The church’s main attraction is a painting by a famous Baroque artist - Mattia Preti. It depicts the martyrdom of St Matthew. It can be found behind the main altar and dates back to 1688.

HAMRIJA TOWER

BALI GUARENA PALACE

GHAR HANEX COASTLINE

This watchtower was built in 1659 by the Order of St John. It offered protection against invaders from the south then, and now provides a majestic view of the island of Filfla which is about 5 km away. The tower was restored by Heritage Malta and is part of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park.

This palace built in 1740 has a simple architecture and was made to offer its occupants protection from potential sea raiders who might’ve landed in Qrendi. The palace has a beautiful garden which was used by The King’s Own Malta Regiment - a regiment of local Maltese that valiantly protected the shores of Malta.

This hidden gem is a coastline that is full of rock formations, beautiful luminescent blue water and a plethora of flora and fauna. You can also get a beautiful view of the island of Filfla from here. It is recommended that you stay within the green markings on the ground.

The venues for these exhibitions were chosen not only for the space they offered but also for their cultural significance. The Grandmasters Palace in Valletta, the Metropolitan Chapter at the Cathedral Museum in Mdina, the Auberge de Provence and St James Cavalier among others are historical landmarks, often with limited access to the public therefore adding to the element of prestige as exhibition backdrops. All of these exhibitions were accompanied by a catalogue raisonnee, some of which are now collectors’ items. Firm favourites with the public were The Silver of Malta (1995) highlighting 400 years of Maltese domestic and ecclesiastical silver showing the evolution of silver craftsmanship in Malta, and Costume in Malta (1998) displaying an elaborate selection of costumes through the ages from all social classes. Both these exhibitions were held at the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, with the costume exhibition also earning international acclaim. The last exhibition to date, Music in Malta from Prehistory to Vinyl (2019) was a first for FPM on many levels. The use of multimedia technology throughout the exhibition as well as a line-up of musical performances put this project proudly on a pedestal. Constantly delivering such high standards both in the design as well as the academic research that goes into every exhibition is not without its financial challenges. Which is why the foundation is forever grateful to its supporters without whose aid these projects would never come to fruition. As we celebrate the achievements of the last 30 years, we look forward to our forthcoming projects, always with the same mission – to collect and disseminate information with the aim of promoting and spreading knowledge on the cultural heritage of Malta.

Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, is a unique tasting bitter-sweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs. Kinnie is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie a Mediterranean classic since 1952, loved by the local population and tourists. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zero-calorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced, as well as Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an intense orange flavour. Ġbejna (plural ġbejniet) are traditional cheeselets produced from sheep's or goat's milk using rennet to set the curds. In Malta, Ġbejna is used for filling ravioli, and the traditional baked pastry delight, pastizzi. This month, Chef Rebecca makes the most of its creamy texture in this delightful gnocchi plate. So, go ahead and give it a try!

GOATS’ CHEESE GNOCCHI with crispy artichokes, pea purée, fresh herbs and tomatoes

INGREDIENTS FOR THE GNOCCHI

FOR THE PEA PURÉE

FOR THE CRISPY ARTICHOKES

FOR THE SAUCE

1kg fresh Maltese cheeselets (drained)

1 whole onions

1 globe artichoke

500ml vegetable stock

4 cloves garlic

100g corn flour

50g butter

100g aged cheeselets (grated) 300g semolina 4 eggs

1 sprig of thyme

2 minced garlic

300ml vegetable stock

100g cherry tomatoes cut in half

300g peas

Chives

2 egg yolks Salt

METHOD FOR THE GNOCCHI In a food processor mix the cheeselets, eggs and salt together. Then slowly fold in the semolina until you have a dough consistency. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Once set, hand roll 15g of the dough to form the gnocchi. METHOD FOR THE PEA PURÉE Sautée the onions and garlic with a sprig of thyme in butter. Once sautéed, in the same pan add the vegetable stock and blanch the peas for 3 minutes. Blitz the peas together with the onions and garlic, adding the liquid in small additions as needed. Blend until you have a fairly thick smooth purée. Then pass the purée through a fine sieve to have a silky-smooth finish. Season with salt and taste. METHOD FOR THE CRISPY ARTICHOKES Boil the artichokes in salted boiling water for 1 hour. Once cooked, cool down and remove the outer layers. Keeping the artichoke heart, toss the artichoke heart in corn flour. Fry at a temperature of 180ºC until golden brown and crispy. METHOD FOR THE SAUCE Fry the minced garlic in butter and add the vegetable stock. Once it starts to boil, add the gnocchi and cook for around 3 to 4 minutes until soft. Finish off with cherry tomatoes, chives and seasoning for a creamy and flavourful dish.

IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO K AREN GALE A CABIN CREW

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA? I started working with Air Malta in 2006 as a temporary Cabin Crew, and joined full-time five years ago. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? First and foremost, the biggest challenge is to be able to handle different types of personalities both when dealing with passengers and other crew members; keeping in mind one has to spend long hours in an enclosed space. Secondly, you need to learn to adapt and adjust your whole life around your roster as it’s the nature of the job. IS THERE A PARTICULAR EVENT OR MOMENT DURING YOUR CAREER WITH AIR MALTA WHICH YOU ARE PROUD OR FOND OF AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? Despite all the challenges and struggles we have been faced with during the past years, wearing my uniform each time gives me a sense of pride. Assisting passengers and making sure they have an excellent experience onboard whilst reaching their destination safely is something, we as cabin crew, love doing. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I love nature and the outdoors. I enjoy trekking and swimming. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? Maltese ftira with olive oil (Ħobż biż-żejt). WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIMES? La Vita e Bella. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? Rock music - Queen, Pink Floyd, Nirvana. The list is endless. WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION AND WHY? Southern Italy. The attractive, colourful buildings cascading down the hillsides, make for a truly spectacular sight and are part of what makes both Positano and Amalfi such wonderfully photogenic towns. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING THE MALTESE ISLANDS? I never get fed up of taking a stroll along the lovely streets of Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities. The beautiful architecture, historical museums and amazing views make these places truly magical. Our sister island Gozo and Comino, along with our spectacular beaches are surely not to be missed, especially in summer!

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

SMOKING

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

FACE MASKS The Airline requires all passengers to wear an approved medical or cloth face mask at all times, starting from boarding, for the duration of the flight, through to disembarkation. Passengers will not be allowed to board without a facemask. Masks should also be worn within the airport building, before and during check-in, upon arrival, when collecting baggage, and up to the point that a passenger leaves the airport building. As per the Government of Malta Legal Notice 402 of 2020, children under three (3) years of age and persons with severe cognitive, physical, mental, or respiratory impairments who have difficulties tolerating a mask as certified by a licensed medical practitioner are exempted from wearing masks. Certified individuals shall always carry the relevant medical certificate exempting them from wearing a mask. Passengers risk fines if they fail to comply.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
