Just past Qbajjar Bay west of Marsalforn, Gozo, the coast is characterised by a chequerboard of rock-cut saltpans protruding into the sea. These 350-year-old salt pans are part of the centuries-old Gozitan tradition of sea-salt production that has been passed down within certain local families for generations.

FROM THE CHAIRPERSON...

Merħba,
Dear travellers
It is indeed very pleasing to see the air transport industry rebound strongly as more and more people who have been longing to travel are taking to the skies. During April and May, the first two months of our Summer 2022 schedule, we carried over 267,000 guests across our 17 routes, achieving unprecedented seat load factors for both months.
July is here, and a splendid time to revel in the Maltese islands' glory. Restrictions have eased, and events are back in abundance. From Sweeney Todd at Teatru Manoel, to local village feasts and live music concerts such as singing superstars Sam Ryder and Lewis Capaldi in the coming weeks, clear your diary; we promise you won't have to look far! I love a festival and couldn't be happier to see the islands brimming with an eclectic hive of activity.
France and the United Kingdom were rated as the most popular markets in April followed by Italy whilst our busiest flights were to London Heathrow, Munich and Paris’ Orly.
In this issue, we have decided to shine the spotlight on our sister island of Gozo. You'll find what not to miss should you be visiting the island and multiple ways to while away your time. Explorers, be sure to catch this month's "Off The Beaten Track", Dwejra is a place you should certainly put on the top of your Gozo to-do list. And don't miss our feature on the island's capital, Victoria, by David Baker.
In May, our top market was Italy followed by France, UK and Germany whilst the busiest airport was once again London Heathrow followed by Munich and Amsterdam. During this month more than half of our routes achieved an unprecedented occupancy level of over 90%. Preliminary figures for June are even better with expected passenger numbers exceeding 145,000 with 14 out of 17 routes operating at a seat load factors well above the 90% mark.
Of course, if you are anything like me and constantly planning where to dine next, we have got you covered. Our restaurant listings offer some of the best eateries across the islands. That's not forgetting a delicious pork recipe with carob molasses brought to us this month by top Chef Romeo Giacomotto.
This remarkable performance was achieved despite the postpandemic challenges that the aviation industry is now facing, namely the record level of jet fuel prices and the serious disruptions to ground services at certain European airports.
Whatever you have planned, enjoy your time on the islands.
During these testing times, Air Malta continues to be one of the airlines with the lowest number of flight cancellations and we will endeavor to maintain our high standards of performance and passenger service throughout summer.
Summers don't get much better than Maltese ones, if I may say so myself! Sit back, relax; you'll soon be there.
More and more of our guests are choosing to travel in our Business Class service and we are very pleased to have re-instated our full Business Class service in May this year. Our complimentary Business Class service includes a selection of different menus that celebrate the Maltese heritage and culture, expressed both in the type and quality of the food and drinks offered, including gourmet meals with Mediterranean flavours, as well as their presentation. The menus vary depending on seasonality, flight duration and timings. For more information about all our services including Business Class and the latest news about Air Malta and our Summer flight schedule please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive great offers directly to your inbox. Thank you for flying Air Malta! Enjoy this edition and keep safe.

WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF HEAVEN ON HOLIDAY IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS? WITHOUT DOUBT, ANY LIST WOULD BE WIDE, VARIED AND OF COURSE SUBJECTIVE, AS THE ISLANDS OFFER SO MUCH TO SO MANY. All too often visitors to Gozo travel through Victoria and far too few spend time really exploring it. The magnificent St George’s Basilica stands in a smaller square just behind ItTokk in the heart of the old town. The web of narrow streets around St George’s are the oldest in town and well worth a walk around. Here you’ll find everything from delicious fresh produce, cheese and wine, to antiques, craft goods, fishing nets and knitwear. The town also has a thriving cultural life all its own, with some surprising attractions ranging from opera to horse races in the main

street on feast (festa) day. In Triq ir-Repubblika (Republic Street), Rabat’s main street, there are all kinds of shops, a couple of shopping arcades, pharmacies, banks, the Police Headquarters, and the Bishop’s Chancery, as well as La Stella and Leone Band Clubs in their respective homes, the Astra and Aurora opera theatres. In lower Republic Street (a little further from It-Tokk) is Villa Rundle Public Gardens, laid out by the British in 1910 and refurbished in recent years. With a variety of local and imported trees and a cooling fountain, the gardens are an oasis of peace. A climb up to the Citadel is a must and within its walls you can find the Gozo Cathedral – a fine 17th century baroque building that is famous for its outstanding trompe l’oeil painting depicting a dome that was never there. You can also find the Cathedral Museum, the Law Courts, the Old Prison, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, the Citadel Armoury, and the Natural Science Museum. From time to time, there are art exhibitions in different areas of the citadel, ranging from paintings, photography and artistic fashion jewellery amongst others. But it is standing atop of its ancient walls that will surely impress you most. There are multiple paths giving you a 360 degree view of the island of Gozo. It is truly spectacular. It is from this vantage point that it will also hit you. Gozo is not your typical island getaway! Sure, the beaches are great, but the interior is so ‘typically Mediterranean’, which means scrubby landscapes that are beautiful in their own way. You’ll find it difficult to tear your eyes from the hills and towns surrounding the capital. From dry stone walls, criss-crossing the fields to vineyards and the coastal bluffs, there’s a lot of variety and all of it is stunning. Oh, and did I mention the sunsets? Also, in that top five ideas of holiday heaven – a cold beer or glass of wine as the sun goes down, against the backdrop of the Citadel!

Behind the seemingly impenetrable thick walls, flanking Malta’s Grand Harbour, lies a hidden gem known as the Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea), which is surprisingly off the tourists' radar. Predominantly a maritime hub, rich in history, this area is reviving itself and the Rolling Geeks are paving the way with their modern take on touring. Explore this gorgeous open-air museum full of architectural riches and breathtaking views, while cruising around in your eco friendly, smart technology vehicle. The cars are fun, safe and easy to drive. Following a GPS-guided route at an easy pace while listening to the commentary on board in the language of your choice gives you the freedom to sightsee at your own pace. The online tracking and on-board communication system enables the Rolling Geeks’ vigilant staff to provide assistance throughout the tour, giving you peace of mind. The roads on the prescribed route are very quiet and it is very easy to park and step out whenever you wish to. The selfie feature in the cars adds to the fun, the rest is up to you to capture. Overall this is a great value-for -money experience, suitable for all ages. Visit www.rolling-geeks.com for more information.

TA’ PINU CHURCH AND SANCTUARY
MGARR HARBOUR
CITADELLA, VICTORIA
Gozo’s Ta’ Pinu is a magnificent church with an incredible story. It believed to have saved the Gozitans from the plague and served as a site of miracles. This neo-Romanesque church soars to an impressive height of 61 metres (200 feet). Ta’ Pinu holds a beloved place in the lives of many, each year hundreds of thousands of devoted Roman Catholics from all over the world make a special pilgrimage to Ta’ Pinu.
The first view one gets of Gozo is that of Mġarr Harbour, to be greeted by a quaint harbour that is magical in its simplicity, and indeed a destination within its own right. The port itself is situated in attractive surroundings. The imposing Fort Chambray strikes visitors entering the small harbour on top of the hill, and by the rustic niche of Our Lady of Lourdes beneath the stunning church on the high ground, that guards the port.
This must-see place in Victoria is its wonderous citadel. As an entirely fortified city, it was completely renovated recently, it dominates the capital and offers stunning 360 views across Malta and Gozo. Interestingly, the area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site now occupied by the Ċittadella is believed to have been the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulosor Glauconis Civitas.
RAMLA L-HAMRA BAY
XLENDI BAY
GGANTIJA TEMPLES
Ramla l-Ħamra (also referred to Ramla Bay) is Gozo’s largest sandy beach on the North Coast of the island, famed for its reddish sand. Beneath part of the sand dune lie ruins that date to the Roman period some two thousand years ago. Overlooking the bay is the renowned Calypso Cave where the mythological nymph Calypso, daughter of Atlantis, is said to have imprisoned Odysseus for seven years as a “prisoner of love”!
Located on the south-west of the island, Xlendi makes a beautiful seaside getaway. Adorned with plenty of bars and restaurants, here you can sample some excellent Gozitan cuisine. Once a small fishing village, this popular resort is flanked by high imposing cliffs- and a genuinely unmissable sunset.
For history, lovers don’t miss Ġgantija, an impressive ancient megalithic temple complex, consisting of two temples which date back to between 3600 and 3200 BC, the Ġgantija Temples are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The site is considered as one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world, preceding Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids!

is historian Judge Giovanni Bonello’s series Histories of Malta which has now run into twelve volumes. These books are the result of years of research and in-depth study and are delivered in the format of ‘micro history’ making them enjoyable, light-hearted, and a must read for all Melitensia lovers. Also, by Bonello is another well-loved series, Nostalgias of Malta, which features a selection of photographs of Malta from a bygone era. An Encyclopaedia of Artists with a Malta Connection (Albert Ganado; Antonio Espinosa Rodriguez 2018) has become an invaluable addition to the library of any art researcher or student, as are the various books on art and architecture in Malta. Jewellery in Malta – Treasures from the Island of the Knights 1530-1798 (Francesca Balzan 2009) reveals the social history and trade practices of jewellery in Malta – the first study of its kind. Music and dance come alive in Anna Borg Cardona’s Musical Instruments of the Maltese Islands (2014) and Kathrina Farrugia-Kriel’s Princess Poutiatine and the Art of Ballet in Malta (2020). The latest publication to reach the shelves of bookstores around the island is Society Fashion in Malta: The Portrait Photography of Leandro Preziosi 1830-1860 by Caroline Tonna (2022). The journal Treasures of Malta is published three times a year, Easter, Summer and Christmas, with the first volume being published in 1994. Many of the earlier issues are no longer in print and have now become collector’s items, even selling at auction. Papers are original research submissions dealing with Maltese cultural heritage, and the variety of illustrated articles per issue encompasses all aspects of culture from the visual arts, architecture and archaeology to historical, socio-political and religious events that have shaped the country over the ages. University students who have completed their dissertations are given the opportunity to publish with us, promoting fresh research. It has been incredibly rewarding to see this section of FPM grow to such an extent. The sheer variety of these publications not only ignites peoples’ interest in the history and culture of Malta but as with the exhibitions, they serve to bring to light many unknown treasures and events that have made Malta what it is today.

AIR MALTA TRANSFERS OPERATIONS BACK TO LONDON HEATHROW TERMINAL 4
Air Malta has moved back to London’s Heathrow Terminal 4 last month. For the past two years Air Malta operated from Terminal 2 due to the slowdown in air travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision by Heathrow airport to restart operations from Terminal 4 confirms the current strong growing demand in air travel.

IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO DR NADIA GIORDIMAINA G E N E R A L M A N A G E R I N T E R N AT I O N A L A F FA I R S HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLES? I have been working at Air Malta 16 and a half years as General Manager International Affairs. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? My role includes the monitoring of all regulatory developments whether on an international, regional or national level that impact Air Malta’s operation. The airline industry is one of the most regulated sectors, primarily due to the safety aspect and this brings with it a fair share of challenges with every new legislation (or amendment thereto) that is introduced. The challenge always revolves round effectively communicating Air Malta’s position externally and once the legislation is adopted, communicating it internally. A particularly challenging time has been the COVID pandemic. During COVID each country not only adopted its own rules but continuously changed them, more often than not at very short notice. This necessitated very fast communication at all hours. IS THERE A PARTICULAR EVENT OR MOMENT DURING YOUR CAREER WITH AIR MALTA WHICH YOU ARE PROUD OR FOND OF AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS? This has to be my role during the COVID pandemic. The proud moment is the unprecedented synergy not only between internal departments but also with external stakeholders, as all departments had to put up with copious memos that were issued from my end on all requirements – more than 400 memos on COVID alone in a span of 2 years, a good number at extremely short notice. A big thank you goes to all employees and agents for ensuring that compliance was top notch. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? It has to be spending time with my family… my husband and three children Kyle, Amber and Max enjoying the simple things in life… whether at the playground, building sandcastles at the beach ... in a nutshell making memories. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? I am torn between octopus with garlic or ħobż biż-żejt. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE OF ALL TIMES? Gladiator … so many friends who took part as extras when it was shot in Malta way back in the year 2000. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? A bit of everything… at the moment Rachel Platten's Fight Song but I would like to dedicate Memories by Maroon 5 to all past and present Air Malta employees. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY? No place like home. But after Malta, I guess it’s London, so many things to do (musicals, theme parks, shopping) and places to visit. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING THE MALTESE ISLANDS? The favourite spot has to be the sea. In the Maltese Islands one is never more than 15 minutes away from the sea by car. Year after year, Malta receives top scores for excellent water quality in Europe. As for the tips: Do try Maltese bread and spend some time with the locals – you will get so many tips on the not-so-common sites to visit. Seek out Maltese brands – yes there are, flying on the national airline was your first encounter with a Maltese brand.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
SMOKING
Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.
FACE MASKS The Airline requires all passengers to wear an approved medical or cloth face mask at all times, starting from boarding, for the duration of the flight, through to disembarkation. Passengers will not be allowed to board without a facemask. Masks should also be worn within the airport building, before and during check-in, upon arrival, when collecting baggage, and up to the point that a passenger leaves the airport building. As per the Government of Malta Legal Notice 402 of 2020, children under three (3) years of age and persons with severe cognitive, physical, mental, or respiratory impairments who have difficulties tolerating a mask as certified by a licensed medical practitioner are exempted from wearing masks. Certified individuals shall always carry the relevant medical certificate exempting them from wearing a mask. Passengers risk fines if they fail to comply.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
