ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS
by Air Malta
Mediterranean Thyme
Mediterranean Thyme (Sagħtar), is a low-growing and aromatic edible shrub that thrives in the local conditions. It produces flowers in shades of purple, pink and white, but with a different type of soil in the south, it’s rare to see there. The plant is famous for its culinary and medicinal properties and is a favorite food source for pollinators. If you land in Malta on a warm evening, you will probably pick up its scent.

Wild Local Asparagus
Local asparagus, known as Spraġġ Xewwieki, are a native wild plant found in the rocky regions of the Maltese islands and along the Mediterranean Sea. These tender shoots have a slightly bitter taste and are popularly used during their peak season as a key ingredient in local gourmet dishes, as well as household meals, such as quiches, pies, and speciality side dishes.
Diving
Diving in Malta is another way to immerse yourself in history. Many wrecks are submerged below the water, some placed strategically, remnants from the past, giving divers a whole new side to see of Malta and Gozo. Many registered schools offer trial lessons and rent equipment.
Saluting Battery
The Saluting Battery is a wonderful vantage point to view The Three Cities and The Grand Harbour. These canons are cared for by WirtArtna who curate other properties and places of interest. The canons are fired daily.
Feast Of St Peter And St Paul
The feast of St Peter and St Paul falls on the 29th of June and is a public holiday. This feast is celebrated in Mdina, Malta and Nadur in Gozo.
Mixta Cave
This natural cave located on the eastern side of Ramla Bay is very commonly confused with Calypso's Cave which is located on the other side of the same bay. Both are worth a visit and what a great instagram shot!
Lazarus Tiles
Lazarus Tiles is a project that seeks to preserve and document Maltese cement tiles which would otherwise be destined for the landfill. Started by Thomas Camilleri, these colourful and sometimes centuryold tiles are sourced from building sites, renovation projects and even skips, before being restored and mounted in steel. That way, after a lifetime of bearing our weight, they can now enjoy their retirement looking at us instead. As always, it’s the stories behind these objects that intrigue Thomas so much and he documents his discoveries online on Instagram (@thelazarusclub) and on Facebook (Lazarus Tiles).
Reach out on social media and visit the Lazarus Tiles workshop in Msida. Also available from Camilleri Paris Mode - Rabat & Sliema.
