Born from the Malta Crafts Foundation’s annual awards that recognise e xcellence in craftsmanship and innovative product ideas, where it won the category that aims to revive traditional crafts through collaboration and innovation, Merkaba went through various guises to get to the recently launched finished product.

Lace-making is a traditional craft in Malta that has been practiced fo r centuries, and has faced its own challenges in recent years. This collaboration is hoped to inspire people to see the craft re-imagined; Maltese lace has elements unique to it and it is hoped that the skills and craftsmanship nee ded will continue to be passed down to younger generations.

Different sustainable and recycled materials were trialled for this collection, but the issue with the size of bobbins meant that a change of yarn and a mix of techniques including macramé and crochet, had to be employe d. The collection is inspired by the sacred g eometry of the Merkaba, which is believed to be a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and protection. In line with this, the collection features a range of bags that are designed to be both functional and fashionable, with each bag carefully crafted to meet the needs of the modern traveller.

One of the standout pieces in the collection is the Tote Bag, which is made from a combination of eco-friendly materials, including recycled yarns and organic cotton. The bag features a bold geometric design that is sure to turn heads, while its spacious interior and sturdy straps make it the perfect companion for a day out exploring.

Fo r those looking for something a little more compact for evenings for example, the Merkaba Crossbody Bag is a great option. It is made from the same eco-friendly materials as the Tote Bag, but it s compact size makes it ideal for carrying your essentials while on the go. The bag also features an adjustable strap, allowing you to wear it comfortably whichever way you prefer.

Gabriella is committed to sustainability and ethical practices, with her materials, eco-friendly packaging and biodegradable shipping mailers, reducing her product’s impact on the environment as much as possible. It is hoped that this aspect appeals to the younger audience and introduces them to the craft of lace and bag making too.
