Captain

Clifford Chetcuti Air Malta CEO

December is, for some, the happiest time of the year, with the holidays so clear in the distance and the festivities well in sight, many locals and visitors to our land welcome the month with a beaming smile on their faces. For me this December comes with a bittersweet tinge. On the one hand, December means a lot to me; it’s all about time spent with family and friends - an important month where connections are rekindled and some downtime can be spent with the ones who matter most to us. The perfect December consists of a number of local activities that brighten the weekdays and spark a glowing sense of joy at the weekends. A generous amount of food and possibly even a cheeky drink or two with friends, colleagues and family. Local villages such as Attard, Balzan and Lija take the Christmas season pretty seriously, with San Anton’s Christmas crib displayed for all to appreciate. Valletta is also beautiful this time of year. The city is adorned with beautiful lights and other decorative symbols that elevate the festive spirit while hitting the shops for those last minute gifts. Among all the positive sensations that come with the season, this December presents a change for you readers in the upcoming months. Issue 72 will be my last opportunity to share my love for the islands with you, sad as this may be, I do hope that you enjoy my last attempt at brightening your flight; it was an utter delight. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Have a safe flight,

Kristina

MALTA: AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FAMILY’S FUTURE PROVIDING YOUR FAMILY THEIR SAFETY AND WELL-BEING IS A GIFT FOR LIFE. SAFE AND SECURE, IN THE HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN Parents will do what they do best - care for their children unconditionally and give them the hardest possible push forward to ensure their best chances in life. At the back of their mind, however, they also worry about their prospects when outside life conditions are unreliable. The soundest thing one can do to counteract the unknown, is to provide themselves and their children with opportunities to protect their future. Trends in geo-political instability across the globe, coupled with the rise in nationalism and economic insecurity can prove veritable serious challenges to families who have the means for education opportunity, business acumen and the will to thrive but are curtailed by their nation’s limitations. Enter citizenship-by-investment – a means to achieving safety, security, mobility and a new world of opportunity for extended families with outlooks and perspectives that go beyond their borders.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MALTA CITIZENSHIP

The right to live, study, work, do business, retire in Malta and in the European Union Access to high quality free education and health-care Citizenship automatically handed down European Union citizenship within 1 year Schengen residency during the process Visa free travel to more than 180 countries Source and remittance-based taxation

Malta is a most viable option for families seeking second citizenship. Located in the centre of the Mediterranean, this small island offers everything families need and expect: a safe place to live, a mild climate, excellent educational opportunities, high-quality medical services, and welcoming people. Families in Malta are close knit and the extended domestic unit remains a core value of the country’s social fabric.

A HUB FOR COMMERCE AND TRADE For those who also wish to do business, Malta boasts a strong economy, a pro-business environment, a booming property market and a rapidly growing fintech sector. In conjunction with family security, Maltese citizenship-byinvestment enables EU-wide mobility, including freedom of movement of goods, capital and services, as well as visa free travel to over 180 countries. Corporate relocation or setting up a new company is straightforward, and foreign companies directly investing in Malta benefit from significant advantages. Essentially, Malta’s success in a variety of industries makes it an ideal location for IT set ups, financial services operators, blockchain projects and pharmaceutical companies amongst others.

MALTA BENEFITS FOR BUSINESS Efficient company set up or relocation Booming real estate market Easy trust and foundation set up Strong economy Successful industries in wide array of sectors Pro-business eco-system English speaking, professional work force

THE PROPERTY MARKET Malta has always had a strong real estate market. Locals value ownership of their own homes whilst foreign direct investment has seen large number of foreigners moving to Malta and invest in commercial and residential property. An investment in Maltese real estate today is a sure investment, with a nearly fool-proof guarantee that its value will rise with time. Reflecting the success of the Maltese residency and citizenship programmes, the country is also seeing an increase in the development of high-end property and gated communities to cater for the HNW market.

PROTECTING ASSETS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Maltese trusts and foundations are an efficient way of bringing assets together and protecting different assets for both present needs and those of future generations of family members and dependants. These include real estate, movable property, art, family heirlooms, and more. New citizens will find an approachable process, both for the setting up of a trust or a foundation to secure assets and also for eventually distributing these.

VIEWS FROM THE EXPERT Malta: the EU destination for families and businesses “Malta is experiencing a sustainable veritable economic boom,” said Priscilla Mifsud Parker, a private client lawyer who heads the Families and Wealth Services as well as the Corporate and Trust Services at international law firm Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates. “We are seeing the birth of innovative industries like blockchain while traditional industries like maritime, aviation and pharma keep going from strength to strength.” “But as growth in key industries converges and changes our economic landscape, our local core values remain stronger than ever. A safe environment for our families is foremost in our life goals. But as protective as we are of our children, we also continually strive to give them the best educational openings and international opportunities for growth, life learning and success. New Maltese residents and citizens can expect this culture when they relocate.”

Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates is an international law firm, with offices in Malta, Cyprus, London, Zurich and Hong Kong, advising high net worth international families and their businesses on residency & citizenship, property, corporate and tax, financial services and fintech and yachts and jets.

CHRISTMAS ON THE ISLANDS WORDS CL AIRE PACE MONREAL

BEING ONE OF THE MOST CHRISTIAN COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD, MALTA DELIGHTS IN RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS ALL YEAR ROUND. OF COURSE, CHRISTMAS IS NO EXCEPTION. THE COUNTRY PRIDES ITSELF IN DECORATIONS, NATIVITY SCENES, TRADITIONAL SONGS, LOCAL SWEETS, AND CELEBRATIONS THAT ARE BY NO MEANS ORDINARY. NOT DISSIMILAR TO OTHER CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD, MALTA SHARES MANY OF ITS CUSTOMS WITH OTHER COUNTRIES. HOWEVER, IT LEAVES ITS CULTURAL MARK, MAKING THE CELEBRATIONS UNIQUELY MALTESE.

THE THREE VILLAGES D I S COV E R TH E Q UA INTN E S S O F AT TA R D, B A L Z A N A N D LI JA WORDS IGGY FENECH

The Three Villages of Attard, Balzan and Lija are located at the centre of the island and are just a 20-minute bus ride from the capital, Valletta. While not particularly large, they continue to captivate locals and visitors alike thanks to their beautiful architecture, lush gardens, and centuries’ worth of history crammed into their narrow streets. The trio is well-known for a concentration of beautiful country houses and hunting lodges, and there are many fine examples that date back to the time of the Knights of Malta (1530-1798). The most famous of these is, undoubtedly, San Anton Palace, which was built in the 1600s and which has been called home by each and every President of Malta since the island became a republic in 1974. Not far from San Anton is the magnificent Villa Bologna, which is still lived in by the descendants of the family that built it in 1745. This estate not only boasts a breath-taking country house, but also sprawling gardens complete with citrus orchards, monumental fountains, ponds and walkways, as well as its own pottery outlet which creates beautiful, artisanal ceramic products. Over in Lija, meanwhile, is the stunningly symmetrical Villa Francia, one of the official residences of the Prime Minister of Malta. As you meander through the villages’ picturesque streets – full of Instagram potential – you will also come across a variety of reminders of the villages’ past. In Lija, for example, just a few dozen metres away from the Parish Church is the Belvedere Tower, an architectural folly that harks back to the time when the area was part of the Villa Gourigon gardens. And, in both Balzan and Attard, you may come across the aqueduct constructed in 1610 by Grand Master de Wignacourt to bring water from Rabat to Valletta. As is always the case across the Maltese Islands, you are never too far from a beautiful church. The most visited is probably Lija’s parish church dedicated to Our Saviour, featuring a meticulously decorated ceiling full of paintings by the famous and renowned artist Giuseppe Calì. During the village feast (6th August), this church becomes the central focus of one of Malta’s most porpular village feasts, where fireworks colour the sky for hours on end.

Having said that, Balzan is home to some incredibly charming and undiscerning chapels, including the Old Annunciation Church, the Church of St Mary and the Church of St Roque, which are well worth a visit. And, while in Balzan, the area around the parish church dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lady has some beautiful spots and interesting architecture waiting to be discovered, including traditional Maltese doors and balconies, a beautiful red telephone box from the time of the British era, and various band clubs where you can sit down for lunch, dinner or just a drink. With so much to discover, the Three Villages are definitely worth a day of your trip. But, don’t take our word for it. Instead believe their undisputed mottos: Florigera rosis halo (I perfume the air with my blossoms) for Attard, Hortibus undique septa (Surrounded by gardens) for Balzan, and Suavi Fructo Rubeo (I glow red with sweet fruit) for Lija.

S

ome years ago, I found myself walking into what felt like a magic hobbit-hole. In a small house tucked away in the heart of Siġġiewi, a city in the southwest of Malta, I met Nina. She guided me through the little rooms of her house, packed to the brim with photographs, and through to her prized piece of furniture: a discretely positioned cubby hole; prized more for its contents than anything else. In addition to countless jars of preserves, there were special jars with healing ingredients: in one were petals in vinegar (ħall il-ward). “The rose petals have to be of the velvety kind,” she explained. Put a few drops of the potion on a handkerchief and take a few whips to help ease headaches or revive someone who is feeling faint. Inside one bottle is a dark, thick carob syrup (għasel talħarrub). A few teaspoons stirred into a mug of hot water can be taken as a cure for sore throats. Having trouble with sleeping or with digestion? Take a hot drink made from chamomile flowers. The list is endless, and one jar after another were produced. A liquid made from locally-grown barley (xgħir ta' Malta) is drunk to purify and refresh the blood. Another medicinal cure is a Vaseline-type cream, used to soften cracked heels and dry skin. The pungent, greasy contents of the jar were made from bees' wax, oil and chicken fat. “The ointment is placed over the affected area and left covered with a bandage: It works miracles,” Nina had proudly remarked. Carrying down a bag of dried plants, Nina had described her cure for kidney stones. A drink is made out of the plant xpakkapjetra (Maltese Savory) - it is first washed and then boiled, placed in a teapot of hot water and left to cool.

Although Nina is not alone in that she uses such medicinal mixtures, what does make her special is that she makes such a vast variety of them. Even her own daughter knows far less recipes than her mother, and her granddaughter hardly any. This is perhaps more particular to Malta as countries like Germany, for instance, have a strong homeopathy culture. Despite this, however, there has been a resurgence in the use of natural remedies in Malta, both in terms of homeopaths who prescribe them, as well as people who turn to alternative medicines. One friend tells me about how while writing her university thesis, she was so stressed that she had clumps of hair falling out; she had developed seborrhea dermatitis, (which is like scaly dry flakes on the scalp). While steroids would often be prescribed in such a situation she was instead told to take a concoction of Mediterranean sea water, coarse salt, and squeezed lime. She rubbed it all over her scalp, leaving it on for at least six hours and then washed it out. On repeating this process once a week for a few weeks, she found it had worked successfully. The list goes on, from Bach flower remedies for humans and pets, used to treat the latter for stress and aggression, to boiling bay leaves and drinking the water for an upset stomach, as well as a tablespoon of aloe vera extract for anaemia. What is particularly interesting is that while some of these treatments are not specific to Malta, it is advised that remedies such as Bach flowers work better when they come from the native land. I don’t know if Nina is still around but those looking for alternative remedies would do well to, quite literally, take a leaf out of her book.

S O M E TH I N G S TR A N G E TH I S WAY CO M E S : TH E E N D WORDS PAUL VASSALLO

The moonlight spills out over the old cobbled pavements, casting long shadows over the aged façades of stone dwellings. The wind barrels through narrow alleyways and howls around street corners. A shadow stretched further than the rest, reaching out to form the shape of a man. Melqart, Lord of the Underworld, stalks the streets as the end approaches once more has come to see in the new year and seek the company of his venerable partner, the Mother Goddess of Fertility. A single occupant peers out of one window for a moment to observe the ancient god’s annual journey, then turns his attention away. Hunched in a corner of his kitchen, he picks up another rice grain and presses it through the metal sieve he is holding. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are both special times for Malta. Both events are greeted with a shower of celebration and festivities and are eagerly anticipated by the Maltese people as they draw nearer. However, vague tales of half-seen, shadowy apparitions and forgotten gods are still told around kitchen tables as the evenings come to a close. During these times, it has been said that the Phoenician god of sailors, Lord Melqart, will rise up from the depths of the Underworld to roam the earth once more, searching for his partner, the Goddess of Fertility. Though the younger generation might only have heard mutterings of these stories, the older generation still remember being cautioned to lock their doors on the eve of Christ’s birth, and were told that to be born on this day was an ill omen for the child coming into this world. These ill-fated souls would be burdened by the curse of the il-Gawgaw, whereby the victim would be forced to assume a twisted, disfigured form every Christmas Eve. The malformed ghoul would then wander the streets in a zombie-like state while harassing and frightening anyone that strayed too close, and would awaken the next morning exhausted and bruised. This terrible blight is said to be reserved by the Catholic God for those people impudent enough to come into this world on the same night as the birth of his only son. The only known deterrent to the transformation was for the person to carry out some tedious task, such as counting grains of rice or the holes in a sieve, as the twelfth hour passed them by.

OF LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE WORDS SARAH CHIRCOP PHOTOGRAPHY ALEXANDRA PACE

“I FIND THIS QUITE INTERESTING YOU KNOW, TALKING ABOUT MY WORK IN AN INFLIGHT MAGAZINE. THERE COULD BE PEOPLE WHO HAVE EITHER NEVER BEEN TO MALTA BEFORE OR PEOPLE I AM ACTUALLY TALKING AND WRITING ABOUT, PEOPLE WHO THIS WORK IS ABOUT - THOSE PEOPLE RETURNING HOME.” Meet Charlie Cauchi - academic, filmmaker, film producer, visual artist, and twice the cat-owner. But at the heart of what she does with all these titles is all to do with people and their stories (the cats play their part too). Here I chat with her about just how busy she's been navigating it all.

Walking, Holding on the other hand, is a more abstract piece, one that makes you question what what it is to be in public versus at home and how do you define that - how do you define home and your identity within that home? Her biggest research question has been to try and understand how people like her, not quite Maltese, not quite English, navigate the question of identity? But what you’ll find is that there really is no answer. And what this allowed her to do was actually find the surface for her to be able to ask more questions. “I find it very hard to just stop on one thing - not because I don’t give it the attention it deserves but perhaps because I’m just too inquisitive and curious.” So what’s next, I asked? With a number of projects lined up for next year, she will be producing two films by two female directors as well as preparing for two solo shows, all of which allow her to work in multiple fields. But while the year of the Capital of Culture is still with us, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sponsored a piece titled Sempreviva which will see a 3-screen projection/installation of material she’s shot over the past 3 years including archive material - a coming together of the documentary short and the exhibition.

And in case you were wondering, Malta’s latitudinal coordinates are Latitude: 35.8997200° As Charlie explains, - “I came across a film made in the late 50s about Malta as a tourist destination. It was made by the British and in the opening sequence a booming RP voice declared “Welcome to Latitude 36…”Obviously, it’s made through a very colonial lens and I thought it would be interesting to appropriate the title and change the discussion.”

ROA M AROUND ROME THIS WINTER WORDS DAVID BAKER / AIR MALTA

ROME. A THOUSAND IMAGES COME TO MIND WITH THIS ONE WORD. THOSE IMAGES OFTEN INCLUDE SUNSHINE, BLUE SKIES OR PEOPLE SITTING OUT ON A PIAZZA. The spring, summer and autumn months of April through October are indeed a beautiful time of year to be in Rome, but there are also some very compelling reasons for travelling to this wonderful city in the winter months. Rome doesn’t lose any of its charm when it’s chilly, but it certainly becomes different in the winter. I would go so far as to say it is returned to the residents or it is at its ‘most Roman’. The historical capital of Italy is (largely) free of the heaving crowds of summer and the weather is fresh, but not freezing, crisp, but not bone-crushingly cold either. An extremely walkable city, Rome in winter is the perfect place to act the f lâneur, as the French say (strolling to you and me) whilst you explore some of the city’s haunting and historic ruins (many of which are free at this time of the year). Alternatively, you can watch the world go by in a Roman cafe as ham hangs overhead from the ceiling and effusive owners urge you to try their coffee and biscotti. There are so many wonderful things to see and do in Rome, whether it’s your first, second, third or more visit, yet in winter you’ll find with the lack of crowds, the sights, and smells can be appreciated more and that’s when you can truly experience the magic here. It is not only one of the oldest but one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world, it is a place where you can literally walk among the ruins of its two and a half

P E R P E T UA L M OT I O N THE RISE OF E TFS They argue that asset prices may be distorted as, when stocks are added to an ETF, they benefit from an artificial increase in popularity which ultimately determines the relative value of securities. Like a perpetual motion machine, such actions often lead to large companies getting more expensive irrespective of fundamentals. Such overweighting of highly priced companies, which has acted as a source of demand driving up recent prices, could function in the reverse and result in amplified selling pressure during a market correction. Market chaos could also lead to ETFs trading at a discount to the underlying securities. Although there are mechanisms in place to prevent such an occurrence, the relative calm and minimal volatility experienced On 19th October 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped

QUIRKS

THE HIDDEN WORLD BEHIND MALTA’S MOST ICONIC ALLEYS WORDS CHRISTINE SPITERI

MALTA’S MOST ICONIC ALLEYS ARE BURIED DEEP IN THE HEART OUR OLDEST TOWNS AND VILLAGES. Dating back to medieval times, these intimate nooks and crannies are soaked in history, walking you through the arrival of the Knights and two world wars. The main parish is always a good starting point. Thereafter, let the winding alleys be your guide. The best kept secrets are unveiled upon looking up: quaint balconies, wrought-iron motifs and religious statues keep a watchful eye in street corners. Here’s what you will witness in the iconic passageways of Valletta, Naxxar and Birgu.

QUIRKS

VA LLET TA Triq id-Dejda, commonly known as Strada Stretta or Strait Street The narrowest alley in Valletta represents a fascinating time in Malta’s history. To a common onlooker, Strait Street may look like a lanky corridor through the back streets of our baroque capital (it is 665 metres in length and just 3.5 to 4 metres wide!) - but its walls have plenty of stories to tell. Throughout the late 19th until the mid-20th century, Strada Stretta was the place where military men who were docked in the harbour went for a good time. There was plenty of live jazz music, singing, tippling and even cross-dressing. It was the island’s red-light district, a stark contrast to the conservative Catholic values at the time. The infamous street went out of business post-wartime and today, it is reopening its doors to new bars, restaurants and live music in an attempt to keep its legacy alive.

NA X X A R Triq Santa Luċija. St Lucy’s street in the northern town of Naxxar is renowned for its picturesque streetscape and well-kept houses of character. Freshly painted doors adorned with unique brass door-knockers, wrought-iron balconies and intricately decorated windows, it’s a pleasure zipping through this street during the day. It boasts Malta’s largest number of alleys (14 in all) and the same number of small status adorning various houses. Up until the early 1950s, St Lucy’s was the town’s commercial centre. Each house you’ll walk past had once served as either a bar, bakery, greengrocer…or a workshop for a craftsman in the village. There was also a small prison (Triq il-Ħabs), which was unusual to find beyond a walled city in those days.

BIRGU The Collachio The Collacchio is a charming area tucked away in the prosperous port city of Birgu (Città Vittoriosa). Having survived the Middle Ages, the Renaissance period and the Baroque era, the area evolved into an open-air architecture museum. Its charm lies in its neatly designed steps and winding passageways, lined with gracious palaces and elaborate stonework. This was the first home to the Knights of St John upon taking possession of our islands in October 1530 and they concentrated their most important buildings here, changing a poor area into a hive of activity for a community of 3,500 persons. These streets witnessed the very first carnival on the island as well as the great war against the Ottomans in 1565, but despite the many changes endured over the years, The Collachio still maintains a majestic and historical presence.

After seeing success in Sweden, Finland and Germany, Trustly’s innovative gaming product, Pay N Play®®, is now launching in Estonia. Trustly pioneered the Pay N Play® concept back in 2015 to create a more streamlined player experience by bundling the registration and deposit steps. Because the steps are combined, the chance that the player registers but never deposits is eliminated, ultimately increasing operators’ conversion and boosting ROI on acquisition and reactivation. Since its debut, Pay N Play® has been a strong growth driver for over 30 gaming brands. BEHIND PAY N PLAY® ’S PROLIFERATION So what’s behind Pay N Play®’s proliferation? Today’s mobile gaming ecosystem is experiencing a collision of two seemingly opposing trends. On one hand, players expect faster and more frictionless online gaming experiences, be it at the registration step, the deposit step or the withdrawal step. On the other hand, the regulatory requirements of operators are becoming increasingly burdensome in attempts to protect against money laundering, terrorism financing and other threats.

Gaming operators have been stuck trying to strike a delicate balance between these two trends, finding ways to offer a more frictionless gaming experience while still ensuring they stay compliant. Trustly’s Pay N Play® offers a solution, gratifying both players and operators. FRICTIONLESS GAMING WITHOUT SACRIFICING SECURITY Pay N Play®, helps operators comfortably balance a frictionless gaming experience with a safe one. It whisks players through registration and boosts conversion on deposits while still ensuring high levels of security and compliance. To register and deposit, all a player has to do is make a deposit via his or her online bank - no redirect away from the mobile gaming site is necessary. As the player makes a deposit, Trustly fetches necessary information from the player’s bank account to fulfill KYC requirements and delivers the data to the operator, who can register the player account in the background. During this step, operators can verify the player’s identity and age, ensuring that he or she is allowed to play, among other things.

Deposit Players can register simply by making a deposit from their online bank.

KYC Trustly passes important KYC data onto the operator, who then creates the player account in the background.

Withdrawal Even if players leave the site, they can return and withdraw their winnings instantly.

ENTERING ESTONIA Given that an online bank payment is the cornerstone of Pay N Play®, Estonia was a logical next market for the product. Although its population is small, the country has a modern banking infrastructure and its consumers have a high preference for paying by online bank pay ment. T he high preference is likely due to the fact that the countr y has one of the most developed digital identification systems in the world. In fact, more digital signatures have been used in Estonia than in the rest of the EU altogether, according to e-Estonia, a government movement to facilitate citizen interactions with the state via electronic solutions. Estonians are therefore very comfortable using a service like Trustly, making Pay N Play® a natural fit for the market. REMEMBERING A MALTESE MODERN ARTIST

AIR MALTA DOUBLES GERMAN DESTINATIONS

T

his winter Air Malta has given renewed focus to its German market and inaugurated three new services to the country. The airline inaugurated a twice weekly service to the capital Berlin, and a once weekly service to Hamburg and Leipzig.

These services will supplement the airline’s double daily flights to Munich, five weekly flights to Frankfurt and the twice weekly services to Dusseldorf.

AIR MALTA AND AIRBUS DISCUSS JOINT INITIATIVES One of the potential initiatives is the development of a flight academy to be set up by Air Malta with the support of Airbus. The academy would offer a range of training courses for pilots. The proposal was made by Air Malta after the airline trained 20 cadet pilots for Qatar Airways. Airbus officials also provided a production update on the delivery of two new A320neo aircraft which will be joining Air Malta’s fleet in the first half of 2019. The brand new aircraft will replace A320ceo aircraft as part of Air Malta’s fleet renewal programme. Talks were also held on cost-effective technical options which will be available to Air Malta to launch longer-haul routes. Photo: Daniel Balzan.

A delegation headed by Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, Air Malta’s Chairman Dr Charles Mangion and Chief Executive Capt. Clifford Chetcuti discussed potential initiatives with Airbus during a visit to the aircraft maker's headquarters in Toulouse.

Dr Mizzi said that such meetings proved fruitful and would now enable Air Malta to plan new routes in line with its growth strategy. The Government’s vision for the airline is to position it as the airline of the Mediterranean which would connect Europe with Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.

USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … … portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
