Welcome to May,

Our 2019 summer schedule is now in full swing. This season we are opearting to 42 scheduled destinations in Europe and North Africa. We have increased frequencies to Paris Charles De Gaulle, Hamburg, Kiev, London Heathrow, Lyon, Munich, Tunis and after an absence of 12 years, in September we shall be resuming flights to Egypt’s capital, Cairo. For the first time we will also offer seasonal scheduled services to/from Warsaw, Tbilisi and Ibiza.

For me the month of May has always been about the height of spring. It is the birth of fresh beginnings and opportunities. My birthday is in May so it is also a month of milestones. May is an all-round positive month. Gone are the April showers to be replaced with darling buds.

May is the month they sing about in songs - mainly because it an easy month to rhyme with but still...

Spring is in full flurry, sunshine is upon us and life is a wonderful thing indeed.

During the month of May, the Maltese Islands boast of an impressive programme of varied cultural events and outdoor activities. Music lovers are literally spoilt for choice with an interesting line-up of music festivals including Earth Garden and classical recitals taking place both in Malta and Gozo. Step into Malta’s medieval period and experience re-enactments of historical battles and lost traditions during the Medieval Mdina Festival or enjoy a Maltese pyrotechnic experience during the Mechanised Ground Fireworks Festival taking place at the historic Floriana Granaries. If you are planning to visit our sister island of Gozo, make sure not to miss the Gozo Spring Fair which is a celebration of artisan products and local food specialties. For sport enthusiasts, a major attraction during this month is the annual event of the Gozo Xterra trail run which is a unique 50km trail running event in the enchanting rural setting of this Mediterranean island.

Alas, this issue is also tinged with a sense of personal sadness for me as it will be my last. However, I place the reigns in the capable hands of Dayna Clarke, our subeditor who will no doubt take the magazine to new heights. (Pun very much intended).

May is a big month for Malta with many cultural events and activities to explore from history to music and much, much more. You can find out more about many of these events in our events section.

This issue is filled with culture both of the pop variety thanks to our Eurovision feature and the more artistic as we explore the art of the Valletta Contemporary. We also head ‘off the beaten track’ as we visit the picturesque coastal area of Fomm ir-Riħ and we explore the southern village of Qrendi in our ‘six sights’ feature.

GETTING TO GOZO THIS MONTH, WE EXPLORE THE GOZO CHANNEL CROSSING. QUINTESSENTIALLY MALTESE, THE CROSSING IS A DESTINATION UNTO ITSELF WITH A HISTORY OF ITS OWN. THE CHANNEL JOINS THE MAIN MALTESE ISLANDS OF MALTA AND GOZO AND PLAYS A VITAL PART OF THE CULTURE, LIFE AND ECONOMY OF THE ISLAND.

AN INTRIGUING HISTORY The Gleneagles Bar gets its name from the first formal ferry service introduced to the islands. Gleneagles first sailed in 1884 out of the shipbuilding port of Aberdeen in Scotland. O.F. Gollcher & Sons Ltd bought her in 1885 for passenger and official mail sailings.

It cost 8p to sail her one way, and for a few years, passengers paid an additional 1p when they landed in Gozo – that surcharge went to paying for a Mass to pray for safe arrival, so it wasn’t to be missed, especially in winter! The Gleneagles also went to Sicily regularly as the mail boat, remaining in operation until the outbreak of World War I. During World War I, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and went to war.

The boat survived, and was returned to Gollcher at the end of the hostilities; he sold her in 1919. Her name changed four times after that before she was finally wrecked in the mid 1930s at Alexandria in Egypt.

Another famous ferry was The Royal Lady, owned by the Gozo Mail Service Company.

She went into service just before World War II but was sunk by German bombers the same year at Mġarr in a surprise attack (her sister ship the SS Franco was also hit but suffered less damage, continuing in service until after the war.)

There is a big difference in the food culture and although the locals love our food, one must be careful what to offer as what may be a traditional favourite in one country may not go down too well in another. The Megalithic temple of Ħaġar Qim stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla. The temple dates back to 3600-3200 BC. The facade, with its trilithon entrance, has been restored and gives an idea of what it may once have looked like.

Mnajdra is a temple complex that’s about a 700m walk downhill from Ħaġar Qim. It was built around the same time and consists of three temples. The lowest temple is astronomically aligned, and archaeologists believe that it was most likely used as an astronomical observation or calendrical site.

San Mattew tal-Maqluba is a Roman Catholic church located in the centre of Qrendi. The church’s main attraction is a painting by a famous Baroque artist- Mattia Preti. It depicts the martyrdom of St Matthew.

This watchtower was built in 1659 by the Order of St John. It offered protection against invaders from the south then and now provides a majestic view of the island of Filfla which is about 5 km away.

The tower was restored by Heritage Malta and is part of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park.

This palace built in 1740 has a simple architecture and was made to offer its occupants protection from potential sea raiders who might’ve landed in Qrendi. The palace has a beautiful garden which was used by The King’s Own Malta Regiment- a regiment of local Maltese that valiantly protected the shores of Malta.

This hidden gem is a coastline that is full of rock formations, beautiful luminescent blue water and a plethora of flora and fauna. You can also get a beautiful view of the Island of Filfla from here. It is recommended that you stay within the green markings on the ground.

SMOKING

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras.

Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing.

Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled.

These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight.

However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing.

For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
