Welcome to June
The month of June is one of our busiest months. After adding 21 new routes last year, we are adding another four destinations this year; Cairo, Tbilisi, Warsaw and Ibiza to complement our summer schedule. With 42 routes to choose from, we are now making sure we offer you, our customers, stunning destinations at the best prices this summer.
Summer has officially landed upon our shores, the days are longer, and spectacular sunsets are already providing an ethereal glow across the islands. From the minute you step off the plane, you can’t help but feel the warmth, whether you are holidaying in the islands or a frequent flyer - the sun puts a spring in your step and blissfully carries you on throughout your day. As the day draws into the night, BBQs and village festas take over, and the social calendar is quickly engulfed with cultural events.
Besides offering new destinations, we are increasing more frequencies on existing routes on destinations like Paris Charles De Gaulle, Hamburg, Kiev, London Heathrow, Lyon, Munich and Tunis. Apart from working hard to provide you with more and improved services, we have also launched the ‘On the DOT’ – “Destination: on Time” campaign.
This month takes us to the beautiful walled city of Mdina, an iconic jewel in Malta’s crown. The labyrinthlike streets are paved with over four thousand years of history and echo tales of times gone by, not to mention the bastions offer a splendid view of the isles. According to tradition, it was here that in 60 A.D. that the Apostle St Paul is said to have lived after having survived a shipwreck on the islands.
The start of this campaign sees us focusing on working with our customers to ensure the check-in process is completed well before forty-five minutes before departure. However, the overall program is much more than that. We are looking at all aspects of the operation; from aircraft and crew scheduling, maintenance, turnaround times, airport operations and logistics, and the way this is all coordinated by our new Integrated Operations Center. These initiatives are intended to improve our frequency of getting you to your destination on time, every time you fly Air Malta.
Furthermore, it is said that St Paul resided inside the grotto known as Fuori le Mura (outside the city walls) nowadays known as St Paul’s Grotto in Rabat. Lamp-lit by night and referred to as “the silent city”, Mdina is enchanting to visit for its timeless atmosphere.
Last month we launched our highly anticipated new Business Class menu. The new model offers our business customers a more personalised service and a gourmet meal presented on specially designed Maltese themed crockery that celebrates the Maltese Islands’ traditions, history and culture. Its unique presentation and attention to detail express the level of quality that as an Airline we want to offer to our customers.
Elsewhere, this issue takes on a strong emphasis of all things film, as we look into Valletta’s iconic Film Festival, the history of cinema in Malta and interview renowned actor Davide Tucci.
We do hope that if you’re travelling in our Business Class, you enjoy the experience, and if you wish to share with us, any comments and suggestions do not hesitate to drop us a line at kmbusinessclass@airmalta.com.
It’s equally a special time for me, as I take on the reigns of Il-Bizzilla, a publication very much close to my heart. I would like to thank Matthew and the team for welcoming me to the world of Bizzilla. And of course, Matt’s previous sterling work which has shaped the direction of the publication.
For more information about Air Malta and our flight schedules, please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive exceptional offers directly in your inbox.
I look forward to showcasing the best of the Maltese Isles in the coming months.
Thank you for choosing Air Malta. As our welcomed guest, we hope to see you onboard another one of our flights soon.
Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight.

These were then defeated by the crown of Aragon during the Battle of Malta. At this time, all noble families were given certain rights following a 1482 Royal Charter from King Alonso V. He declared that all citizens could exercise their right for independence over the islands, which gave them the freedom to set up a local government, the University and the local council. This sense of freedom was then again lost with the arrival of the Knights of St

Considering the fact that Mdina’s fortifications were weak, the knights chose to make Birgu as their administrative centre, which, in turn, allowed the noble families to enjoy their peace within the walls of Mdina. However, the 11th January 1693 earthquake contributed to even more distress which saw the Knights move back to help reconstruct Mdina. Since Mdina’s fortifications had been neglected for long, Grandmaster António Manoel de Vilhena ensured that the Knights of the Order of St John left

The reconstruction included the Mdina Gate, and other landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Magisterial Palace, and Palazzo Falzon. While medieval characteristics were retained, iconic features from the French Baroque era were also introduced, such as stone trophies of arms adorned with lions on the main gate. Other features include bas-relief carvings of patron saints St Paul, St Publius and St Agatha and a Roman headless marble statue that was once wrapped around the walls of the main gate. Nowadays, you can find this in the Museum of Antiquities.

WORDS TONIO ZARB
50 YEARS OF KPMG IN MALTA AS KPMG CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN MALTA, SENIOR PARTNER TONIO ZARB TALKS ABOUT HOW THE HOME-GROWN AUDITING, ADVISORY AND TAX FIRM HAS GROWN OVER TIME AS PART OF THE KPMG GLOBAL NETWORK.
The year is 1969 and an accountant by the name of Joseph Tabone has just opened a new financial auditing firm. Within a decade, Joseph Tabone & Co. has 50 employees and represents one of the world’s most prestigious and influential financial auditing, tax and advisory firms in the world, KPMG. By 1997, Joseph Tabone & Co. is accepted as a member firm of the KPMG network of independent firms and rebrands to ‘KPMG’.
“Some may underestimate the values that drive the culture of a firm like ours,” he continues, “but, in reality, culture is incredibly important. Trust and quality remain at the forefront of our priorities and are core to everything we do. The first message all of our new recruits hear when they join KPMG is that of our commitment to living our values each and every day, and the role they individually play in earning and sustaining public trust.” Mr Zarb explains that he delivers this message personally in the first session of the induction training that every new employee must attend. “As an organisation, we strive to underpin these values with training, systems and ongoing monitoring to ensure we deliver quality which meets our public interest responsibilities.”
“Throughout this process, we had to take ourselves out of the mindset of a local independent firm and take on the forwardlooking, global culture of KPMG,” explains Senior Partner, Tonio Zarb, who first joined Joseph Tabone & Co. in 1979. Today, as one enters KPMG’s newly-refurbished premises in Pietà, it’s obvious that the firm has managed the task and is ready to continue going forward in a story that began 50 years ago. Yet, as it celebrates this milestone, KPMG Malta is not looking to shed any of its past, but rather to build on it.
The KPMG in Malta Annual Review for 2018 refers to the results of the Global People Survey last held in October last year. Over 90% of the people in KPMG in Malta took this survey and 95% confirmed that they are proud to work for KPMG and that its commitment to quality is apparent in what they do on a day-today basis.
In the office refurbishment alone, the firm invested around €5 million to create 5,400m2 of office space to house its evergrowing number of people – 410 in the last count excluding some 175 students enrolled in its Graduate Recruitment Programme and who will join the firm over the next few years. “Our aim is to create an environment for talented people with a culture that emphasises the value and importance of personal growth as well as a commitment to quality in everything we do,” Mr Zarb adds.
KPMG in Malta employs professionals with a diverse set of backgrounds including accountants and auditors, lawyers, tax specialists, risk professionals, corporate finance practitioners, as well as software engineers, computer scientists, and data and analytics experts in order to help meet clients’ digital transformation challenges. 20

Indeed, KPMG in Malta is growing at an impressive rate, adding 29% in revenue in its last financial year, with new services being added each year. “This exceptional growth was triggered by our investment in our practice over the last few years. For instance, since 2016 we have added a People and Change practice, KPMG Software, the KPMG Learning Academy and a strategy service line.”

In Malta, KPMG has also invested in KPMG Crimsonwing through a joint venture between the UK, Dutch and Malta firms. KPMG Crimsonwing is an international solutions provider based in Malta with subsidiaries in the UK and the Netherlands that supports organisations in business transformation enabled by technology, with a focus on Microsoft Dynamics solutions. This brings KPMG’s total people count in Malta to 650 and total revenue at just below €49 million.
What these past 50 years have taught KPMG Malta – and, indeed, anyone else who had their eyes on the ball – is that innovation is essential in today’s ever-changing world, but keeping a steady focus and never losing sight of one’s values, is crucial to survive and thrive… In fact, we have no doubt that KPMG Malta will continue to grow steadily but surely with that frame of mind.

“Our people work on a vast array of client needs and challenges. Often these are complex engagements requiring deep expertise that we consistently deliver at the required quality also by applying KPMG’s global methodologies and tools. KPMG people are globally-minded, and we continue to support our people in taking on secondment opportunities with other KPMG offices from New York to the Channel Islands, enabling them to expand their skills and business knowledge while taking on new challenges.”
“You can’t take growth for granted,” Mr Zarb explains. “Our question is always: where should we invest next? Over the past two years, we have been very active in transforming KPMG to meet the challenges and more importantly, the opportunities of the digital age. Our aim is to combine KPMG’s deep business expertise with leading edge technology. To achieve this we have to operate in new ways, become more agile; but, above all, we have to drive innovation, enabling us to disrupt the status quo, and grow, and, at the same time, to support our clients in doing the same. Finally, our clients will have the final say on how rapidly we grow and the direction of that growth.”

MALTA: AN INVESTMENT LOCATION FOR THE FUTURE Considered one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, many are still amazed to discover the plethora of benefits associated with investing and living in Malta.
CITIZENSHIP-BY-INVESTMENT GOLD STANDARD Developed by the Government of Malta in partnership with Henley & Partners, the Malta Individual Investor Program (MIIP) is considered the most successful and credible citizenship program in the world. The minimum capital contribution for a single applicant is approximately EUR 1 million, which consists of a donation to the country’s development fund, a real estate purchase or rental, and an investment in government-approved financial instruments.
Situated just off the European coast beneath Sicily, the small island of Malta has established itself as a leading financial centre, offering foreign investors stability, security, and innovation. The Mediterranean island has experienced above-average economic growth in recent years, as investors and travellers alike tap into the island nation’s enormous potential. During the first half of 2018, Malta had the fastest growing economy in the Eurozone, boasting an economic growth rate of more than 5%. Considering this exponential growth and Malta’s incredible lifestyle benefits, an increasing number of people are looking to make greater investments in the island. Malta’s acclaimed citizenship-by-investment program offers investors the opportunity to obtain citizenship in exchange for a substantial economic contribution to the country and forge genuine links with the island.
The MIIP has set the industry benchmark in terms of application processing, applying the world’s strictest due diligence standards and vetting of applicants. Each applicant and their included family members have to pass a strict four-tier due diligence process to ensure that all individuals entering Malta through citizenship-by-investment have no association with any criminal activities or form of corruption.

MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE Malta is often referred to as an open-air museum and has a history that dates to 5,000 BCE — the island’s skyline is dominated by 16th-century architecture. The country is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among them, its capital, Valletta, donned the illustrious crown of ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2018.
The Maltese government understands that a healthy private sector and an overall pro-investment climate contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this extent, Malta Enterprise was created with an objective to support private businesses operating in the country, and its services are priceless to new investors entering the market. It provides assistance in data analysis, helps with identifying potential partners and clients, and guides investors through the legal system.
Along with its rich history, Malta offers 300 days of sunshine, seasculpted shores, and azure waters. The island’s lifestyle is modern and welcoming, and the influences of its location are evident in local food. Dishes feature a mix of Mediterranean cuisine with strong influences from Italy, created from fresh ingredients from the local land and sea. A SECURE HAVEN FOR YOUR FAMILY An EU member since 2004, Malta provides its residents with the same benefits afforded to European citizens, such as access to the world’s best educational and medical facilities and security under the protection of the region’s strong legal system. Malta is considered one of the safest countries in terms of natural disasters and crime. According to the 2018 edition of the World Risk Report, the island nation ranks as the second safest in the world behind Qatar on the 172-nation ranking of disaster risks. The crime rate on the island is also almost non-existent.
FUTURE-FACING INVESTMENT DESTINATION In 2018, Malta became the first country in the world to establish a regulatory framework for blockchain technology. The island nation has also long been a front runner in the iGaming and fintech industries.
The country has earned a reputation for being highly familyoriented — many of its public places and establishments are welcoming of and cater to children. Malta has excellent local and international public and private education, with all schools teaching in English. The standard of health care in Malta is among the highest in the world, with a wide network of clinics and the renowned private Saint James Hospital servicing residents.
The country’s online gaming industry has shown impressive growth over the past few years, supporting local employment and bolstering revenue for the island. The sector accounts for a substantial part of Malta’s economy, contributing over 12% of the country’s overall GDP.
THRIVING REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY Malta’s real estate market has shown outstanding resilience during the 2008 global recession and continues to grow in sales. The purchase of real estate on the island archipelago is at an alltime high. During the first half of 2018, property prices in Malta increased more than any other country in the world.
THE GLOBAL LEADER IN INVESTMENT MIGRATION Henley & Partners is the global leader in residence and citizenship planning. Our highly qualified professionals work together as one team in over 30 offices worldwide. With a local office in Malta, our experienced global team is best-placed to guide you through your citizenship-by-investment journey.
The increasing number of buyers looking to purchase real estate in Malta is driven by various factors, including the opening of branches of some of the world’s most influential financial institutions, online businesses, and reinsurance companies. Malta offers an abundance of property options, including apartments, maisonettes, ‘houses of character’, palazzos, villas, and bungalows.
The firm also runs a leading government advisory practice that has raised more than USD 8 billion in foreign direct investment. Trusted by governments, the firm has been involved in strategic consulting and in the design, setup, and operation of the world’s most successful residence and citizenship programs.
AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE FOR BUSINESS A flexible and highly trained multilingual workforce is one of Malta’s principal assets and helps to ensure the country’s competitive edge through high-quality production at costs that are highly competitive in relation to the rest of Europe. Investors operating in Malta also benefit from easy access to European and Middle Eastern markets and the EU’s free trade agreements. Further bolstering Malta’s business appeal is its membership to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, and the International Labour Organization.

will be making its debut this year. The competition will shine a spotlight on the realities of the cinema of small nations. Little funding, restricted opportunities and limited audiences are all common to filmmakers from small countries, like Malta. There is, however, an abundance of talent and creativity that is often seen in films produced by filmmakers from these nations, to the extent that various directors and productions from small states do make it big around the world. The competition will be open to feature-length and short films from 35 countries in Europe and the Middle East. A lot of talent from around the world will be present during the festival, so your chances of meeting a producer, director or actor from one of the selected films are quite good. You might encounter a filmmaker who might, in a few months’ time, become one of the biggest names in the industry. To cite an example, last year an actor from one of the films screened was walking around the city and later on in the year he was walking the red carpet, at the Kodak theatre, having been nominated for an Oscar. The likes of the Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr will also be present at this year’s festival. Talent talks are also part of the programme, giving the opportunity to the public to interact with the filmmakers. After watching some of the enthralling films that will be screened, you could get the opportunity of asking the director or producer of the film anything you want. You will get an insight into the films that you would not normally get by just watching them at home. Another section of the festival is aptly named ’Without Borders‘ and involves a selection of films from a particular language or region. This year you will be delighted with films from francophone countries. Since Malta is an island, there is a special section dedicated to films that are made by islanders or about islands. Five films featuring these characteristics will be shown. There is something for children too. There is a Kids Weekend, which is a selection of European feature-length and short-films, and a mix of live-action and animations for younger audiences under 10 years. They will also have the opportunity to learn about the reality of cinema, stop-animation and reading sessions. There’s a Teens Only section too, offering a number of coming-of-age films and documentaries. There is even a Teens Choice Award which will be made up of a young panel of judges. The festival will present you with a curated selection of films, but over and above that, it will give you an experience your couch at home can never compare with… watching a film in a unique location, with like-minded people, in an atmosphere you could never find elsewhere.

Over the years, this dedication has contributed to creating award-winning brews that so many have grown to appreciate. The range also includes Cisk Export – a smooth, well-balanced and exceptional beer with a 5% alcohol content, Cisk Excel – a low carbohydrate beer, Cisk Chill – flavoured beer available in three flavours, Cisk Pilsner – a premium pilsner with an alcohol content of 5.5% and Cisk Strong – an outstanding extra-strong premium lager with a 9% alcohol content.
Kinnie, Malta’s own favourite soft drink, is a unique tasting bitter sweet soft drink with orange flavouring and aromatic herbs. Kinnie is best enjoyed ‘neat’, with a slice of orange and lots of ice. Highly refreshing, it is also an excellent mixer. These distinctive characteristics have made Kinnie a Mediterranean classic since 1952, loved by the local population and tourists. Over the years, in keeping with evolving trends in lifestyles and health awareness, a zero-calorie version, Diet Kinnie, was introduced, as well as Kinnie Zest – a sugar-free variant with an intense orange flavour. "A visit to Sicily wouldn’t be complete if it weren’t topped off with some diverse dining choices. Food is a constant companion on a Sicilian holiday." IF YOU WERE TO TRY FIVE THINGS, THESE SHOULD BE ON YOUR LIST 1. Granita: Since the 10th century, snow trapped in caves on Etna was brought down in summer, flavoured and eaten as a dessert. It’s a cross between a Slush Puppie and sorbet, but in gourmet flavours such as almond, basil and myrtle. Parlours are open into the night and have scores of characteristics. The best are home-made and treated as works of art. 2. Pasta di mandorle: An Arab province for 200 years, Sicily shares the North African love of all things sweet. Pasta di mandorle are biscuits with a sweet, soft almond centre. Bought warm, wrapped in ribbons from the local bakery, they are utterly moreish. Try Etoile d’Oro, a cafe filled with bin and business people under the arches behind Piazza del Duomo. It has a huge chandelier and a long glass counter groaning under giant sweet pastries, biscuits, jellies and marzipan creations of every fruit imaginable. 3. Pasta alla Norma: Catania’s speciality, it has a spicy sauce of tomatoes, fried aubergines and salted ricotta. The name comes from the opera Norma, by Vincenzo Bellini, the city’s most famous musical son. 4. Cassata: ‘As lovely as a cassata’ the super-sickly dessert is prized across the island. It’s made of ricotta cheese, lots of sugar, vanilla, chocolate and fruit. Cassatina, fairy-cake-sized versions, are more manageable. 5. Squid and swordfish: Restaurants throughout the city boast a massive range of seafood, from fresh tuna to trays of sea urchins. Don’t leave without trying the squid and swordfish. For a night out to try some of these delights go to Via Alessi. While the city has excellent restaurants and bars, the real nightlife is on the streets. At night the stone-flagged steps of Via Alessi are crammed with amorous young Sicilians talking and flirting, and the bars on the roads nearby are jumping. Later, head for one of the groovy beach clubs set up on platforms over the rocks at the nearby seaside villages of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza, where the posing and partying goes on until 4 am. A final word. Much as a visit is thoroughly recommended, think twice about going in August! During this month Sicilian expats come home, and mainland Italians arrive in droves, and road, beach and bed space is like gold dust!

DAYNA CLARKE DISCOVERS THE EXCITEMENT AND ENERGY WITHIN JOSEPH CASAPINTA'S MALTESE WATERCOLOUR IMAGERY.

"I find it hard to work in just one medium, and, in fact, the variety helps, because I come back to each medium refreshed" You'll find diversity within a genre as well. Among his landscapes, for example, which are primarily Maltese, Casapinta revels in the contrasts between the dramatic, hilly landscape in the north of Malta with coastal regions, and the busy street scenes of his home. Browsing his paintings, you will notice, people are always looking into the scene, never at you. Recently Casapinta has incorporated his passion for classic cars into his works. The artist's penchant for variety extends to his materials as well. "I get tired of doing just one thing," he explains. "I find it hard to work in just one medium, and, in fact, the variety helps, because I come back to each medium refreshed." Casapinta estimates that he does most work in watercolour, followed closely by ink then and occasionally acrylic. PROCESS OF UNDERSTANDING Casapinta explains that he starts with his inspirational photos and plein air studies, but then puts them away to take a fresh approach at seeing "what colours appear and how they interact" as he works. He subsequently explores the concept through a series of black-and-white thumbnails in order, in a trusty notebook he carries everywhere. "I love to travel, and whenever I am flying, I sit and sketch," he adds. Casapinta follows the traditional square format because he "wants the viewer to stay in the picture and not fall from the edge", and because it sometimes allows him to disturb the rules of composition successfully. From the horizon, the shapes radiate outwards. At this stage, his work becomes a process of careful refinement; he tries not to add any more shapes or strokes that are needed to convey his vision. Casapinta will frequently check in a mirror, stepping away from the easel, leaving the room for an hour or putting the painting on the easel and staring down at it, Casapinta analyses and adjusts the work until he's satisfied as if concocting a lengthy recipe.
Organic clothing for girls, designed in Malta.
It's clear the artist's desire to continue to create such intrinsic joy in his watercolour landscapes and appears to be metamorphosing in a positive direction. His angle is occupied with the beauty of the landscape or seascape, architecture which reflects the cultural history of Malta and a tremendous reverential and personal dialogue with nature.

2019 MARKS THE CENTENARY FROM THE 1919 SETTE GIUGNO RIOTS WHERE A SWARM OF MALTESE INDIVIDUALS STOOD TO BE COUNTED FOR, AND FOUGHT FOR THE BASIC RIGHTS THAT THEY HAD BEEN SO UNJUSTLY STRIPPED OF.
WORDS ALESSIA CARUANA
100 YEARS LATER THIS HISTORIC EVENT IS TO BE REMEMBERED AS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER PUBLIC HOLIDAY OR SIMPLY A MONUMENT IN PALACE SQUARE. THE 7TH OF JUNE IS A DAY THAT EXISTS TO COMMEMORATE THE PATRIOTIC SEQUENCE OF EVENTS THAT MARKED A PIVOTAL TURNING POINT, NOT JUST FOR THOSE WHO REBELLED AGAINST THE INSTITUTIONS THAT GOVERNED THIS ISLAND BUT FOR MALTA AS A NATION. HOWEVER, THE QUESTION THAT STILL STANDS IS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED ON THAT DAY IN 1919?

This meant that Malta was governed much like a fortress, with the bulk of spending put into the facilities which the British directly utilised. As a result, Malta’s economy was – by and

There are around 6000 people commemorated by the CWGC on Malta. They are of varied origins; British, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Greeks, Poles, Indians, Maltese and even Germans are commemorated across the various cemeteries and the Malta Memorial that the Commission takes care of. Each gravestone commemorates two or three soldiers, with their name, service number, regiment, regimental insignia and rank engraved. The gravestones are unique to Malta. Unlike other CWGC graves, many gravestones commemorate multiple casualties. Those graves which remember people but lack a regimental insignia signify that a civilian who worked in close quarters with the British forces is buried in that spot. The CWGC in Malta has, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and the Malta Aviation Museum, launched a new project aimed at not only commemorating those who are buried within their cemeteries, but also at sharing their stories. Guided tours are taking place at the Imtarfa Military Cemetery on the outskirts of Mtarfa, the Pieta Military Cemetery and the Capuccini Naval Cemetery in Kalkara, where volunteers share the stories of those who are buried in Malta. The CWGC cemeteries in Malta commemorate many notable figures, each with their own unique and fascinating story. Hugh Alexander Pollock, Enid Blyton’s first husband, is buried at Imtarfa Military Cemetery while Henry Ernest Wild, who was a member of the Ross Sea Party within Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition and who spent months stranded in the Antarctic, is buried at the Capuccini Naval Cemetery. In conjunction with this project, the CWGC has also launched a crowdsourcing project called ‘Stories from Malta’ which is an appeal for information on the men and women who are commemorated on Malta. “Behind every one of our headstones or names on a memorial to the missing, is a human story just waiting to be told”, CWGC Assistant Historian Max Dutton said.

THE ‘VOICE’ OF FREDDIE MERCURY IS COMING TO MALTA IN JUNE Canadian-born artist and musician Marc Martel will be performing Queen’s greatest hits in the second edition of ‘Rock the Fort’, organised by TEN08 on Friday, June 14. Martel will captivate the crowds with such renderings of the iconic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, the adrenaline-pumping ‘We Will Rock You’, the euphoric ‘We Are the Champions’ and the soulful ‘Somebody to Love’. The rock concert is being held at the Grand Harbour Marina, Vittoriosa, in the shadow of Malta’s most imposing fortification, Fort St Angelo. The event is once again being organised in aid of The Marigold Foundation. This year’s concert promises to be a memorable one. You might not have noticed it if you saw “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the Oscarnominated film about the life of the mercurial Mercury and in fact, Martel hopes that you didn’t. But it’s his vocals, blended with master tapes of Mercury’s work, which are used in the film. Through genetics and musical aptitude, the 42-year-old singer is a vocal doppelgänger for the Queen frontman. Martel admits that it’s not the life that he planned, but it has landed him on ‘American Idol’ and in front of crowds of thousands worldwide. Described by Queen’s official drummer Roger Taylor as "that voice … you listen, close your eyes and you think it's Freddie", Martel has excellent worldwide reviews from artists in the music industry. In August 2017 he enthralled Celine Dion in a rendition of ‘Somebody to Love’. The video on YouTube got more than 6 million views. Get your neon on, see how high your bangs will go and grab your jean jacket for ‘Rock the Fort celebrates Queen’, featuring Marc Martel on the 14th of June, 2019. IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO ROBERT L AUTIER SENIOR FIRST OFFICER HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLES? My journey with Air Malta started back in November 2007 when I was selected to form part of a group of cadet pilots. Since then, I have been flying the national flag for the past nine years as a senior First Officer.
THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOUR JOB? Demanding, challenging and rewarding.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB? To ensure that together with the team on board, we take our customers to their destination safely, efficiently and on-time.
DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES? I love to go for a run and keep myself fit, cooking and playing football.
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED MALTESE DISH? Without any doubt, fried rabbit in garlic!
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO FOLLOW? I love to listen to house and R&B music, especially when hitting the gym after a flight. It helps me to unwind.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY? I do love short trips to Sicily. It is ideal when you're working on a roster system since you have no fixed working pattern, and it is challenging to have more than two days off in a row. I enjoy hiring a car and exploring a new area each time I go. I truly love the food, sweets and landscape over there.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS AND TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING MALTA? I adore history and architecture, and as a Maltese, I'm proud of our rich heritage. I would suggest, visiting Mdina by night to feel the character of the city, watching the sunset at Għajn Tuffieħa Tower also known as Għajn Mixkuka Tower situated between Golden Bay and Riviera Bay or a visit to the newly restored Citadel in Gozo. It is just amazing!

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
